Traveled solo. Been to Malaysia for three to 4 times already, but it’s my first to book a tour package. Since I was traveling on a limited time, I need to choose one package only and I did not regret that I chose this. The farms are amazing and so productive. I also got friendly discount from mytourlane for traveling alone.

The Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands distance is approximately 210 km. This takes about 3.5 hours to drive depending on traffic – which can be a lot on weekends and busy periods.

BEST OPTION: How To Get From Kuala Lumpur To Cameron Highlands

Taking a private taxi is the easiest and quickest way to get between Kuala Lumpur and Cameron Highlands. It’s also convenient to travel by car because it will be easy to drive around the attractions once you get there.

For a cheaper alternative, take the bus.

Here’s a summary of your options:

Option 1: Bus From Kuala Lumpur To Cameron Highlands

tour from kuala lumpur to cameron highlands

The most economical way is to take a bus from KL to Cameron Highlands.

If you want to travel from KL to Cameron Highlands by bus, there are several bus lines available. These all depart from the TBS Bus Station (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) in Kuala Lumpur. Current departure times vary from 10am to 5pm.

Click here to see the latest schedule.

A one-way bus ticket to Cameron Highland from KL costs around RM38. During weekends and holidays, these buses can be extra popular, so it’s especially important that you secure a booking in advance.

However, at any time, I recommend you book in advance to save worrying that you won’t get a seat on your preferred departure.

If you’re a budget-traveller wanting to cut costs then this is the best choice. But note that the entire journey will take around 4.75 hours with multiple bus stops along the way. If you’re in a hurry to get to your destination, taking a taxi or driving a private car is a much better option.

To get the bus, you’ll need to first get to TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan). If you are travelling from KL Sentral, this is quite easy to get to as you can take the KTM Komuter train between the two places. This only takes about 20 minutes.

If you are staying near public transport in KL, it’s usually easy to get to KL Sentral and then you can take this train to the KL to Cameron Highlands bus.

It’s also possible to take a Grab taxi to TBS which is even easier, but will cost more.

klia1 to klia2

If you’re flying to Kuala Lumpur and wondering if there’s a direct bus from KL airport to Cameron Highlands, there isn’t. You still have to take the KLIA Transit Train that will take you to Bandar Tasik Selatan Station, located right next to TBS Bus Station.

Option 2: KL To Cameron Highlands By Train

KL Sentral

If you’re not in a hurry and love to travel by train then you can take a train from KL to Cameron Highlands. Well, at least, you can part way. Hop on a train from Kuala Lumpur to Kampar (KL Sentral – Ipoh Butterworth – Padang Besar.)

From Kuala Lumpur by train, this will take 2 hours and will cost around RM29.

You can check here to see the prices for your dates

Once you arrive in Kampar, ride a taxi or Grab that will take you to Cameron Highlands District. From Kampar to Cameron Highlands, this will take another hour or so and it will cost RM200.

Another alternative is to take the train to Ipoh then take a local taxi that will take you to Ipoh Bus Terminal. From there, take a bus that travels directly to Cameron Highlands.

Click here to see timetables and buy your bus ticket from Ipoh to Cameron Highlands.

This option really is only for people who love trains as it will take you longer and cost you more. The bus is much easier or a private taxi, even easier.

Option 3: KL To Cameron Highlands By Car

tour from kuala lumpur to cameron highlands

If you want to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands by car, the quickest route is the Tapah toll exit 132 from the North-South Expressway. It’s windier taking this route and takes about 3.5 hours of driving time.

If you prefer a straighter road, the new route to Cameron Highlands from Kuala Lumpur is via the Simpang Pulai road. This road is less windy and takes approximately 4 hours of travel time. You take this turn off from the same expressway just before Ipoh.

Driving your own car (whether you own it or hire it here ) is an excellent option because most of Cameron Highlands attractions are spread out. Ideally, I recommend that you rent a private vehicle if you don’t have one.

Click here to read more about driving in Malaysia.

Option 4: Kuala Lumpur To Cameron Highlands Taxi

tour from kuala lumpur to cameron highlands

The absolute easiest and quickest way is to take a taxi to Cameron Highland from Kuala Lumpur. If you’re coming from the airport, you can even take the taxi from Kuala Lumpur airport to Cameron Highlands.

KL to Cameron Highlands by taxi will take approximately 3.5 hours of travel time, and you can find out the latest cost here . It will be around RM550 for up to four passengers or you can pay for a bigger vehicle for up to seven.

Taking the taxi is a great option. Not only will you be picked up at your hotel in KL (or airport or anywhere else you want), but you’ll be dropped off directly at the door to your hotel in Cameron Highlands.

There’s no navigating public transport with all your luggage, not quite sure what’s happening. You’ll arrive at your hotel in Cameron Highlands refreshed and ready to go instead of sweaty and sick of dealing with your luggage.

You also won’t have the deal with the windy roads in Cameron Highlands and will have a safe and reliable professional to take you there.

We can book your a taxi with a trustworthy local operator here.

Option 5: Kuala Lumpur To Cameron Highlands Tour

Another way you can have a more hassle-free trip is to book a Cameron Highlands tour from Kuala Lumpur. Going on a Cameron Highlands day trip from KL is one of the best ways you can explore Cameron Highlands if you don’t have much time.

This way you don’t have to worry about transport, a hotel and your itinerary because your tour operator will take care of it.

A KL to Cameron Highlands tour package will let you explore the stunning hilltop region’s expansive tea plantations, waterfalls, farms, gardens, and a lot more. If you go on a one day tour to Cameron Highlands from Kuala Lumpur, the travel company will pick up and drop you off in your accommodation.

Mossy Forest of Gunung Brinchang

The main advantage of taking a Cameron Highlands tour from KL is that you’ll be travelling to your destination minus the hassle of riding public transportation or the costs of taking a taxi or a car.

But also keep in mind that taking a package tour to Cameron Highlands from Kuala Lumpur isn’t as flexible as creating your own itinerary. You’ll usually travel with other people who booked the same tour, and the itinerary is fixed.

If you want to take a side-trip to a particular location that isn’t in the itinerary, you might be unable to do so. Also, when going on day trips from Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands, your time exploring a particular place is pretty limited, and it isn’t ideal if you want more freedom to travel at your own pace.

However, if you only have time for one day to visit the Cameron Highlands, this is the way to go.

How To Get To Cameron Highlands From Kuala Lumpur (Easy Guide)

How To Get From KL To Cameron Highlands - Travelswithsun

Cameron Highlands from Kuala Lumpur (KL) can be a tiring journey. Especially if you choose to drive up during a public holiday. Is it worth the trouble?

It is you want to see a different sort of scenery from the rest of Malaysia. And take advantage of the cooler daily temperatures.

Find out how you can go with this handy guide.

Table of Contents:

  • Taxi or Private Car Service

1. Self-drive

If you have your own car, you can consider driving up to Cameron Highlands. This is what most locals choose to do.

Driving Up To Cameron Highlands - Travelswithsun

It’s your car so that means your rules on where and when you go and stop. The only disadvantage is somebody has to drive, and that person will have less energy to enjoy Cameron Highlands.

Some roads in Cameron Highlands require some skilful manoeuvring that should be left to experienced drivers.

The total driving distance will be around 200km to 270km depending on the route or mode of transportation you take to Cameron Highlands.

Estimated traveling time:  3 to 4 hours

There are three different driving routes to choose from:

Route 1: New Road Via Simpang Pulai (Less Windy)

You can take the newer road up to Cameron Highlands. This is the best option available if you have passengers who are prone to car-sickness!

Roads Up To Cameron Highlands Have Many Bends

However, this is also arguably the most popular route and hence, can be congested during weekends, public holidays and school holidays.

KL > Simpang Pulai > Cameron Highlands:

  • Google map: http://bit.ly/Route1fromKLtoCH
  • Duration: about 4 hours

Route 2: Original Road Through Tapah (Windy But Quicker)

Take the North-South Expressway. From there, you may use the Tapah toll exit 132. The Tapah toll exit is the main entry point to Cameron highlands.

KL -> Tapah -> Cameron Highlands:

  • Google map: http://bit.ly/Route2-KLtoCH
  • Duration: about 3 hours

Lata Iskandar waterfall is on the way up and makes for a beautiful rest stop to stretch the limbs! The immediate surroundings of the waterfall is unfortunately often the victim of litterbugs.

That said, this route is faster than the newer alternative (Simpang Pulai) albeit your passengers will likely feel dizzy.

Scenic Part Of The Drive Between Ipoh And Cameron Highlands

Route 3: Detour To Genting Highlands (Via Bentong)

It’s possible to visit Genting Highlands with a little detour using this route.

Bentong is worth going if you want to stop by a durian farm during durian season or to buy some excellent ginger.

KL > Genting Highlands (detour) > Bentong > Sg. Koyan > Ringlet > Cameron Highlands:

  • Google map: http://bit.ly/Route3-KLtoCH
  • Duration: about 4 hours (without Genting Highlands), approx. 5 hours (with Genting Highlands)

2. Taxi Or Private Car Service

This is an expensive option, especially for solo and couples.

But it is also the most convenient way to get straight to Cameron Highlands if you don’t happen to have your own car or a friend you can carpool with.

You might be interested in taking the bus if you don’t want to drive and want to save on transport fares as much as possible.

Unititi Express Turning Into Tanah Rata Bus Terminal

Because buses are cheap, do book early if you will be travelling in peak season or on a weekend.

Two bus operators, Unititi Express and CS Travel & Tours have daily services from KL to Cameron Highlands. They depart from  Terminal Bersepadu Selatan  daily.

CS Travel & Tours Ticket Counter At Tanah Rata Bus Terminal

The drop off point will be Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands.

Note: The only bus station in Cameron Highlands is in Tanah Rata, and it is called Terminal Bas Tanah Rata.

  • Departure Time: From 8:15am to 5pm at almost hourly intervals
  • Destination: Tanah Rata Bus Terminal (Terminal Freesia)
  • Duration: 3 hours, 40 minutes to around 5 hours
  • Price Range (One-way): Between RM36 to RM38

Book your bus ticket here .

Tanah Rata Bus Terminal (Terminal Freesia)

Once you reach Cameron Highlands though, you will have to resort to other modes of transport again. And there’s no localized public bus system in Cameron Highlands.

There is  no direct train  (ETS) from Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands. What you can do instead, is to take the train from Kuala Lumpur and get off at Ipoh (Ipoh Railway Station).

Ipoh Train Station At Sunset

We would not suggest taking this method unless you plan to stop in Ipoh for the day, or at least a few hours.

  • Duration (Kuala Lumpur to Tapah Rd.): 1 hour 50 minutes
  • Duration (Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh): 2.5 to 3 hours
  • Price range: RM25-46
  • Departure point: KL Sentral
  • Bus schedule: 7am+ to 11.30pm (hourly intervals)

Book a train ticket from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh.

If you plan to take the bus from Ipoh to Cameron Highlands after getting to Ipoh from KL by train, be aware that Ipoh Railway Station and AmanJaya Bus Station are not walking distance from each other. You will need a taxi to get to the bus station.

Terminal Meru Raya (Terminal Amanjaya)

Or you can save yourself the trouble and go for a private tour that combines both Ipoh and Cameron Highlands.

You get a personal local and experienced guide as well as a driver! And control over the itinerary. Other benefits include that you won’t have to drive or deal with toll fees, petrol costs and parking. And there’s no time wasted in waiting for the bus or other passengers.

About Cameron Highlands

Located 200 kilometres to the north of Kuala Lumpur, the Cameron Highlands is a vast, hilly region famed for its tea plantations and cool climate.

With the area developed in the late 1920s – and the road opened in 1931 – the Cameron Highlands became a favourite of British colonial settlers in the 1930s, who came here to enjoy some relief from the sweltering temperatures elsewhere in the country.

The land was ideal for growing fresh vegetables and tea, but there were also many colonial buildings – a golf course, cottages, schools, a police office and administrative buildings.

So if you’re wondering what to do in Cameron Highlands in one day, there’s plenty!

Cameron Highlands 1-Day Itinerary

There’s a lot to mark out on your Cameron Highlands tourist map!

If you join a Cameron Highlands full-day tour, these are the highlights included in the standard tour. If you’re visiting independently, these are the highlights that you shouldn’t miss on a trip to this lush, green slice of upland Malaysia.

Enjoy the views over the tea plantations

The first stop for most Cameron Highlands tours will be to explore a selection of tea plantations. Boh is the most famous, but there are also other tea plantations you can visit.

For example there’s also Bharat Tea Plantations, which is where you’ll find the perfectly located Cameron Valley Tea House 1 and 2 – the views from here are amazing.

Fairlie Tea Plantation is another good option, which offers tours and a place to sample tea on a beautiful backdrop.

All in all, the tea plantations in the Cameron Highlands make for a pretty place for a walk, enjoy the views and to take some pictures.

Have tea at Boh Tea Centre

The Boh Tea Centre is an ideal stop for tea lovers, and the most common stop on most tours. This beautifully located plantation offers a glimpse into not just the tea industry, but the history of the Cameron Highlands as a whole.

Located 5,000 feet above sea level, the conditions here – low temperatures, high rainfall, and acidic soil – make it ideal for tea growing.

You can spend time here wandering the tea garden, taking a peek inside the factory and enjoying the views over the plantations while you sip tea and have a bite to eat.

Plus it’s a great place to pick up souvenirs. Where better place to buy tea than straight from the source?

Hike in the Mossy Forest

Cameron Highlands is home to some prime highland forest, where tree ferns grow and moss hangs from old branches of ancient trees.

The mist and cool temperatures create the ideal environment for lichens, ferns, moss and orchids to grow. Interesting wildlife makes their home here, from snakes and frogs to various bird species and mammals.

Exploring the wondrous realm of this particular stretch of forest – dubbed Mossy Forest – has been made easy thanks to a boardwalk that has been constructed to wind through the trees.

The boardwalk stretches from the entrance out into the Mossy Forest, does a little loop at the end and then joins back with the same initial trail.

The whole walk takes around 30 minutes to 1 hour tops, and is a great way to get up close to this beautiful nature, but still walking in relative comfort on the boardwalk.

Visit the Butterfly Farm

Definitely on the Cameron Highlands attractions map is the popular Butterfly Farm. Comprising part of the Kea Farm, this is one of the oldest attractions in the region.

Set in a greenhouse, the Butterfly Farm occupies a sloping hillside and is filled not only with butterflies but other insects and animals too.  These include s nakes, leaf insects, huge beetles, and other animals and insects indigenous to Malaysia.

It’s open daily 8:30AM to 6PM. The entrance ticket usually isn’t included in your Cameron Highlands tour package, you have to pay it on the spot but admission is only RM 7.

Eat fresh strawberries at the Strawberry Farm

With more than one strawberry farm to its name, finding somewhere to pick fresh strawberries in the Cameron Highlands is relatively easy.

It’s the centre of Malaysian strawberry production, after all, with the cold climate providing good growing conditions for the sweet fruit.

One spot is Kok Lim Strawberry Farm (open 9AM to 5PM, it costs RM 30 to pick 500 grams of strawberries yourself).

Personally we didn’t pick strawberries, we just visited the Strawberry Farm and purchased some strawberry products from the shop. It was a bit of an odd stop on the tour, but still pretty interesting.

Visit a Local Market

A day trip to Cameron Highlands wouldn’t be complete without a trip to a colourful local market. The Pasar Pagi Kea Farm market is one of the biggest, while Raju Hill Strawberry Farm also has a decent vegetable market.

Here you can find all sorts of fruit and vegetables, as well as souvenirs. It’s a great place to learn about local culture. Here at night? Don’t miss Brinchang Night Market for edible delights.

Learn about local history at the Time Tunnel Museum

The Time Tunnel Museum is a must-visit museum that works as a time capsule filled with nostalgic memorabilia from Brinchang’s post-war past.

Think old TVs, barber chairs, children’s toys, and a recreation of a retro kopi tiam (traditional Malaysian eatery), among other things.

It’s the local museum in Cameron Highlands, and it’s a pretty interesting place to visit to learn about local history. It doesn’t go into a huge amount of detail, focusing more on showcasing memorabilia, but it’s still interesting.

Visit Sam Poh Temple

One interesting place at Cameron Highlands you should pay a visit to is Sam Poh Temple, a Chinese Buddhist temple that makes for a colourful stop to explore and snap pictures.

It’s a simple temple, but peaceful enough to make it worth visiting. It was the final stop of our Cameron Highlands day tour.

When you compare to other temples in Malaysia, like Batu Caves or Thean Hou Temple in Kuala Lumpur, Sam Poh isn’t as amazing, but it’s still an interesting cultural stop on an otherwise very nature focused tour.

Swim in a waterfall

Our tour didn’t include a waterfall stop, but they do usually feature on most Cameron Highlands day tours. Thanks to the hills and wet conditions, there are several waterfalls to check out.

One is Lata Iskandar Waterfall, which is a picturesque spot where you can dip your feet in the pool, and pick up a snack from a nearby vendor if you’re hungry.

There’s also the scenic and sizeable Robinson Falls, which features a 10-minute hike along a trail (not well marked) to get to it.

The waterfalls in Cameron Highlands might not be as impressive as Seven Wells Waterfalls in Langkawi, but they’re still very pretty.

How many days do you need in Cameron Highlands?

Despite the distance between the two, there are day trips available from Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands .

These day trips allow you to see the main sights of the area in a whirlwind tour that means you won’t have to worry about getting to and from the highlands yourself.

However, as it’s quite a long drive from KL, I really would suggest spending at least 1 night in Cameron Highlands. This will give you more time to explore at a leisurely pace.

Once you’re there you can then do a full day tour starting directly from Cameron Highlands, maybe even staying another night before heading back. This is what we did as part of our wider Malaysia itinerary, and it worked well for us.

We spent the morning in Kuala Lumpur , arrived in Cameron Highlands in the afternoon, spent the next day doing a full-day tour of Cameron Highlands, and then left the next day (total 2 nights in Cameron Highlands).

It ultimately depends on how much time you have in Malaysia and what else you want to see, but I personally think one night in Cameron Highlands is the bare minimum to avoid spending hours in a minivan or bus.

What to pack for a day trip to Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands can have a very variable weather, so it’s important to pack accordingly.

Waterproof jacket – even if you’re visiting in dry season, you will need one of these! We even went as far as rain ponchos , as it was just too rainy when we were there.

Adapter – depending on where you come from you might need one of these to charge your electronics. I like to use an international one so that it can work for multiple destinations.

Power bank – if you’re out and about all day you don’t want your phone to die on you just as you’re about to snap a great photo of the beautiful temples in Kuala Lumpur!

Waterproof shoes – if it ends up raining, you don’t want to get your feet wet! It’s also a good idea to pack flip-flops or a change of shoes, that way you can get out of your wet shoes at the end of the day.

Do you need travel insurance for Cameron Highlands?

After my personal experience spending two nights in a private hospital in Tenerife, and having to pay for it out of pocket (it wasn’t cheap), I always recommend getting travel insurance .

You might not end up needing it, but for a small fee you can travel without worries. Personally, I suggest getting your travel insurance with  Heymondo .

Heymondo offers tailor made travel insurance, providing the best value for money for your specific trip. You can also buy it once you’re already abroad and have forgotten about it before flying (which, if you’re anything like me, is quite likely).

Besides the usual cancellation, medical expenses, luggage coverage and general travel insurance services, Heymondo also has a 24/7 doctor chat and instant assistance through their app.

Plus, as a Greta’s Travels reader, you get 5% off your Heymondo travel insurance !

Final thoughts on doing a day tour to Cameron Highlands

That’s a wrap on the ultimate Cameron Highlands day tour guide! Have you been to Cameron Highlands before? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below!

Cameron Highlands is the perfect place to escape the humid tropical climate of the lowlands. You will have the best time here, exploring tea plantations, verdant forests, flowing waterfalls and unique viewpoints.

From here many travellers continue onwards to Taman Negara, a famous tropical rainforest, but personally we chose to travel on to Ipoh, Georgetown and Langkawi .

There are different towns in the Cameron Highlands areas, all with their own charm.

I hope you found my Cameron Highlands day tour guide useful! If you have any questions, just let me know in the comments below.
