What is REAL ID? Enhanced driver’s license? What you need to know to travel next year

REAL ID

A REAL ID driver's license is pictured in this video still from the New York State DMV.

Update: The deadline for getting a REAL ID or similar has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. A new deadline has not been announced.

If you’re planning to travel a year from now, you may need a new enhanced driver’s license or a REAL ID. Which is which? And when do I need them?

New York has three types of identification: A standard driver’s license, an Enhanced ID and REAL ID. Starting Oct. 1, 2020, the federal government will require a REAL ID, Enhanced ID or similar valid identification card in order to board any domestic flight. In New York, both an Enhanced ID and a REAL ID will allow you to fly anywhere in the U.S., while a standard driver’s license will not.

The REAL ID and Enhanced ID will also allow New York state residents to enter federal buildings, and Enhanced IDs will allow you to travel to Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries without a passport -- but not by plane. Passports are still required for all international flights.

Confused? Let’s compare REAL ID and Enhanced IDs to help you determine which identification you need 12 months from now, and how to get one.

What is a REAL ID?

The REAL ID, or Real ID, was created in 2005 to increase federal security measures after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The REAL ID will be required beginning Oct. 1, 2020, for any adults 18 or older flying within the United States or to enter federal buildings and military bases.

REAL IDs also serve as standard driver’s licenses and identification cards, and look similar, but the REAL ID includes a gold circle with a star in the top right corner.

There is no additional cost for a REAL ID, but you must go to a DMV office to get one in person. You cannot get a REAL ID online or by phone or mail.

What is an Enhanced ID?

The Enhanced Driver License has been available to New York state residents since 2008 and also looks similar to a standard driver’s license. An EDL, however, includes a banner that says “Enhanced” and includes a picture of an American flag in the bottom-right corner.

An Enhanced ID is acceptable for REAL ID purposes, and will allow you to travel on any domestic flight and to enter federal buildings and military bases. An EDL is also acceptable identification at land and sea borders for traveling to and from Canada, Mexico and some countries in the Caribbean; a passport is still required for all international flights.

The EDL costs $30 extra on top of normal transaction fees.

Enhanced Driver's License

An example of a New York State Enhanced Driver's License is pictured in this DMV video still.

Besides New York, four other states -- Washington, Michigan, Vermont and Minnesota -- offer enhanced driver’s licenses that are similarly REAL ID compliant.

Do I have to get a REAL ID or Enhanced Driver’s License?

No. Standard driver’s card and non-driver ID cards are still valid for driving and identification in the U.S. and New York state. All new standard IDs issued after Oct. 30, 2017, include the phrase “NOT FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES” to indicate that they cannot be used for any U.S. flights or to enter federal buildings. A second form of valid identification, such as a Passport or REAL ID or EDL, will be required for domestic flights.

In other words, if you don’t plan on flying anywhere and don’t plan to drive to Canada anytime soon, then you don’t need to rush out and get a REAL ID or EDL. Also, you don’t need a REAL ID or EDL to travel if you already have a valid U.S. passport, Global Entry card, a U.S. Department of Defense ID, federally recognized, tribal-issued photo IDs, transportation worker identification credentials or U.S. Merchant Mariner credentials.

A REAL ID is also not required for voting or registering to vote; applying for federal benefits; accessing health services (including hospitals), law enforcement or court proceedings; and participating in law enforcement proceedings or investigations.

However, the New York State DMV is strongly encouraging residents to apply for a REAL ID or Enhanced Driver’s License now to ensure they’ll be able to travel in the future.

Should I get a REAL ID or Enhanced Driver’s License?

Which is better, REAL ID or Enhanced Driver’s License? That’s up to you. They both serve as acceptable identification for a driver’s license, domestic flights and to enter federal buildings. A REAL ID costs the same as standard identification, while an Enhanced Driver’s License costs $30 more.

The biggest difference is an Enhanced ID allows you to travel to Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries without a passport -- but not by plane. A passport is still required for international flights.

What do I need to get a REAL ID or Enhanced ID?

The New York State DMV says you need the following documents:

  • Proof of identity, such as valid license, birth certificate or passport, with your full first, middle (if applicable) and last name. This name will be displayed on your card as required by federal law.
  • Proof of Social Security Number or Social Security Number ineligibility. If you have a valid NY license, permit or ID card, you must bring your original Social Security card or W-2 with full SSN. If you do not have a New York State driver license or identification card, you must bring your Social Security Card or a letter from the Social Security Administration proving your ineligibility to have a social security number.
  • Proof of your date of birth.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residency or temporary lawful status in the United States.
  • Two different proofs of New York State residence, such as utility bill, bank statement or mortgage statement (a P.O. Box not acceptable).
  • If the name on your license, permit, or non-driver ID application does not match the name on your proof of identity, lawful status and Social Security, you must bring in court- or government-issued proof documenting the event causing your name change(s), such as a marriage license, divorce decree, adoption, or court-order document.

REAL ID has been available in NY for four years: How to get one and when the deadline is

nys enhanced id travel

ALBANY - The REAL ID that can be used as identification to board planes in the U.S.  has been purchased by nearly 5 million New Yorkers since it first became available four years ago.

And by May 3, 2023, New Yorkers will need a new form of identification to board a flight.

The requirement is 16 years old and was the result of the Real ID Act in 2005 that seeks to have all travelers have similar forms of identification.

Last month, the state Department of Motor Vehicles encouraged people to get a REAL ID when they renew their driver's licenses, seek a new one or get non-driver ID.

DMV offices were shuttered during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, but have since reopened.

“Don’t wait until the last minute,” DMV commissioner Mark Schroeder said in a statement. “Get your REAL ID today and you’ll be ready to fly anywhere in the U.S., at any time in the future.”

What's the latest with getting a REAL ID in New York?

The original deadline for New Yorkers to get a new ID was October 2020, but that date has been pushed back repeatedly because of the pandemic.

Schroeder warned that with the current pace of the upgrades, it might not be enough time for every New Yorker who wants to fly to get a new ID before the May 2023 federal deadline.

“If your license is up for renewal, you can get a REAL ID at no additional cost,” Schroeder said.

“A standard license will no longer be accepted to fly within the U.S., so the best time to get a REAL ID is now, especially if you are renewing a license.”

Schroeder added that customers whose licenses are not up for renewal can get a REAL ID for $12.50.

In addition to the REAL ID, which also is needed to enter some federal buildings, the DMV offers an Enhanced Driver License which meets federal REAL ID standards.

An Enhanced Driver License costs $30 extra and can be used as identification when returning to the U.S. by land or sea from Canada, Mexico and some countries in the Caribbean. But you still need a passport to travel internationally.

What types of IDs are there in NY?

There are currently three types of driver's licenses, permits or non-driver IDs that New Yorkers can choose from.

First, standard IDs can be used for identification purposes and used to board domestic flights, but only until May 3, 2023. After that, an enhanced or Real ID will be necessary to get on a plane, unless you have a passport.

Meanwhile, Enhanced and Real IDs can be used to board domestic flights, enter a federal building or military base and for photo identification.

But there's another point: Real or Enhanced IDs are not mandatory, and they are not necessary to be licensed to drive or vote.

How to know the difference?

The licenses look similar, but the Enhanced ID has a person's full legal name, address and an American flag on the bottom right corner of the license. They also say "enhanced" at the top.

The Real ID has a star in the top right corner instead of an American flag.

How to get a REAL ID

The DMV requires an office visit to get a Real ID because you'll need to bring additional proof of identification and have a new photograph taken.

Reservations are required at state DMV offices located in the New York City area, Long Island, the lower Hudson Valley, Albany and Syracuse.

You can check what services are being offered at your local DMV office and make a reservation here:  dmv.ny.gov/offices .

The state also has an online document guide  to help determine what documents to bring to the DMV office. One key reminder, the state says: Make sure to provide documentation if your name has changed.

Enhanced Driver's License for International Travel

Home » Passports » How to Obtain a U.S. Passport

enhanced driver's licenses (EDLs) from three states

A State-issued Enhanced Driver's License (EDL) provides travelers not only a license to drive but also a proof of identity and citizenship when exiting and re-entering the United States borders.

This card was created under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) to provide a convenient, yet secure way for travelers from certain border states to enter and exit the country. That said, there are limits to what countries can you visit with an enhanced license.

An EDL provides travelers with a low-cost to a passport for entering the United States from Canada , Mexico or the Caribbean through a land or sea port of entry.

An EDL qualifies as a REAL-ID that can be used for domestic air travel in the US. However, an EDL cannot be used for international air travel, nor can it be used for domestic air travel within the borders of any of the countries mentioned above.

What does an Enhanced Driver's License offer?

The top 39 land ports of entry in and out of the US (which service over 95% of all U.S. land border crossings each year) are equipped with RFID-reading technology. This helps facilitate speedy travel for those presenting EDLs or one of the other RFID-enabled documents. The MRZ barcode is available as a backup to CBP officials if a particular port-of-entry does not have access to RFID or there is an RFID malfunction.

Scanning either the RFID or MRZ on an enhanced license is as fast if not faster than processing a traditional passport. An EDL is also significantly more durable and convenient than a passport book. As a result, an EDL can make life easier for both travelers and border officials - particularly for travelers who cross the border frequently.

How to apply for Enhanced Driver's License?

The application for an Enhanced Driver's License depends on where you live. It is currently only available to residents of the following states:

If you live in a state without an EDL option (like this reader realized ), you're not totally out of luck. For travelers in other states seeking similar convenience, consider applying for a U.S. Passport Card .

If you meet the residency requirements, applying for an EDL is nearly identical to applying for a standard driver's license in most participating states:

  • If you have never been licensed, you must successfully complete the written knowledge and driving skills tests before a license can be issued. Although driver education is not required for individuals 18 and older, it is highly recommended.
  • If you have a current driver's license, you can apply for the EDL once you renew your license or extend expiration date.
  • You must supply the required documentation including some combination of Social Security, proof of identity, US citizenship, and residency.
  • In case of a name change, present lawful and valid proof with your application.
  • You must have no violations, suspensions, revocations or denials on your driving record that would prevent you from legally operating a motor vehicle.

Note: In Some states you may be required to undergo an interview to receive an EDL.

Once you have completed the application, your biometrics and photos have been taken, and you have signed the necessary declaration papers, you will be issued a temporary operator's permit or a temporary enhanced ID. This permit is not valid for crossing the border - only for identification.

Your enhanced license is valid for up to four years and should arrive in the mail within two to three weeks. The validity of the Enhanced License typically matches the validity of your regular Driver's license.

Enhanced Driver's License Costs

An EDL usually costs more than a standard-issue driver's licence.

See the current fees below (Updated 2021):

  • Michigan: $45 ($38 for renewal)
  • Minnesota: $15 in addition to the $51 fee required for your Class A driver's license
  • New York: $30 in addition to regular driver's license fees (fees vary by age)
  • Vermont: $30 in addition to the standard fees for licenses and/or non-driver ID (fees vary by validity length).
  • Washington: $113 (covers application and issuance fee)

In most cases, fees can be paid by wither cash, check, money order, or major credit card.

How to get a REAL ID and use it for travel

The REAL ID Act is a law that sets higher security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards (IDs).

Why upgrade your license to a REAL ID?

Beginning May 7, 2025, if you have not upgraded your driver’s license or state-issued ID to be REAL ID-compliant, you will not be able to use it to:

  • Board federally regulated commercial aircraft
  • Access federal government facilities or military installations
  • Enter nuclear power plants

Visit the REAL ID website for more details and frequently asked questions .

Check to see if your license or state ID is already REAL ID-compliant

If your driver's license or state ID has a star in the upper right-hand corner, it is already REAL-ID-compliant. There is nothing more you need to do.

How to get a REAL ID

When you apply for or renew your driver’s license or state identification card, you can choose to make it REAL ID-compliant. Find and visit your state's driver's licensing agency website to see what documentation you will need. Your new card will have the REAL ID star marking at the top right.

Using REAL ID and other ID options to board a plane

If you do not upgrade your license or state ID, you can use a passport or one of these other acceptable forms of identification to fly .

Can you still get a non-REAL ID-compliant license or state ID?

You will still be able to get a driver's license or state ID card that is not REAL ID-compliant. But you will not be able to use it for air travel or to get into federal facilities or military installations. Find and visit your state's driver's licensing agency website to see how to get a non-REAL ID-compliant license or state ID.

REAL ID: Deadline for new air travel requirement less than 6 months away

  • Published: Nov. 17, 2022, 6:30 a.m.

New York Real ID

Real ID-compliant driver's licenses have a star in the upper right corner. New York DMV

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Have you gotten your REAL ID from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) yet?

After the deadline was delayed twice due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Americans now have less than six months to acquire a REAL ID, the new form of identification that will soon be required for domestic air travel.

Here’s what you need to know about the REAL ID compliant identification:

What is a REAL ID?

Passed by Congress in 2005, the Real ID Act establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses, permits and ID cards. The Act also prohibits federal agencies, like the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), from accepting cards for official purposes from states that do not meet these standards.

Enhanced driver license, permit, or non-driver ID and valid U.S. Passport are already REAL ID compliant and can be used to board a flight.

When will REAL IDs be required?

Beginning May 3, 2023, the federal government will require REAL ID compliant identification to board federally regulated commercial aircraft and access certain federal facilities, such as courts.

How to obtain a REAL ID?

Those interested must visit their state’s driver’s license agency to get a REAL ID.

The DMV offers residents two options: a standard REAL ID or an Enhanced ID.

Both the Real ID and Enhanced ID will allow travelers to board domestic flights and enter some federal buildings.

However, Enhanced ID’s will also allow residents to cross United States land and sea borders from Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries, without the need for a passport.

Enhanced ID’s do not authorize air travel between these countries, strictly land and sea travel. Passports are still required for all international flights.

Real ID’s are marked with a star logo in the top-right corner, with Enhanced ID’s featuring a banner that reads “Enhanced,” along with an American flag in the top-right corner.

Those who wish to obtain a Real ID must go to a DMV office. You cannot get a Real ID online, by phone, or through mail.

There is no additional cost to get a Real ID. However, all normal transaction fees still apply. An Enhanced ID will cost an extra $30, in addition to the normal transaction fees.

The DMV lists the following documents needed to obtain a Real ID or Enhanced ID:

  • Proof of identity, such as valid license, birth certificate or passport, with your full first, middle (if applicable) and last name. This name will be displayed on your card as required by federal law.
  • Proof of Social Security Number or Social Security Number ineligibility. If you have a valid N.Y. license, permit or ID card, you must bring your original Social Security card or W-2 with full SSN.
  • If the name on your license, permit, or non-driver ID application does not match the name on your proof of identity, lawful status and Social Security, you must bring in court- or government-issued proof documenting the event causing your name change(s), such as a marriage license, divorce decree, adoption or court-order document.

Is a REAL ID card necessary?

The New York DMV states that REAL IDs are not mandatory but encouraged. A REAL ID is optional and is not needed for the following:

  • Being licensed to drive;
  • Voting or registering to vote;
  • Entering Federal facilities that do not require a person to present identification;
  • Applying for or receiving Federal benefits;
  • Accessing health or life preserving services (including hospitals and health clinics), law enforcement, or constitutionally protected activities (including a defendant’s access to court proceedings);
  • Participating in law enforcement proceedings or investigations.

The U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) has interactive tools and videos on its website to help Americans determine if they should get a REAL ID.

REAL or Enhanced IDs needed to travel soon

State officials are stressing the importance of getting a REAL ID or "enhanced" identification before next year's deadline.

“When they come to an airport, they have to have a REAL ID, or what is called an Enhanced drivers license. An Enhanced drivers license not only gets you on an airplane to be able to go visit your grandmother in Ft. Lauderdale after May 3, but it also gives you the opportunity to cross a border, like into Canada,” state Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Mark Schroeder said.

The Enhanced ID has a flag on the top right corner. A REAL ID allows passengers to travel solely within the United States, and has a star on the top right corner.

“The best thing to do is to go on the DMV website first, because we have what is called a document guide. It will help them know exactly what to bring in because there are requirements that the federal government has said that you have to bring in order to get a REAL ID or an Enhanced drivers license,” Schroeder said.

He said the state wants customers to be able to get everything done in one visit.

“So we’re even using technology, you can upload and download so that we know what you have, so that when you do come in, you’re able to get your license, your REAL ID on the first time,” Schroeder said.

After submitting an application for pre-screening, applicants receive an e-mail with instructions to fix any errors and next steps.

After May 3, 2023, if passengers do not have a REAL ID, an Enhanced ID or a passport, they will not be allowed to travel by air.

Most DMVs across New York require an appointment. If you need to make changes to your documents or need a REAL ID, you can make a reservation on the DMV's website at  dmv.ny.gov/offices/ .

Starting May 3, 2023 passengers will be need a REAL ID, Enhanced ID or passport to travel by air within the U.S. Tune into @SPECNews1CNY to learn how to obtain those ID’s. pic.twitter.com/y7oMp4S6d4 — Shalon Stevens (@shalonstevenstv) October 26, 2022

Enhanced Driver License (EDL)

What is an enhanced driver license (edl).

It is an optional travel document that also serves as a NYS Driver’s License that will be accepted as an alternative to a passport for all land and sea travel between the United State, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean. An EDL is valid for 8 years, the same as a regular NYS Driver’s License.

Who is Eligible for an EDL?

Any applicant who can provide proof of identity, NYS residence and US citizenship is eligible. EDL’s are also available to those who qualify for a CDL or motorcycle license. Enhanced Non-Driver ID cards are available as well.

Is the EDL Allowed for Air Travel?

Yes, but EDL’s are only valid for domestic air travel within the United States . An EDL, like a regular Driver’s License or Non-Driver ID, is acceptable as proof of identity for boarding a plane. If you plan to fly internationally, you will also need a passport.

Does the EDL look Different from the current NYS Driver's License?

The EDL does look like a regular NYS Driver’s License, though it is thicker due to a chip installed within it. This chip provides a coded number to border agents. No personal identifying information is stored or is available through this card. There is also a US flag icon on the face of the card, indicating US citizenship.

How long does it take to get an EDL?

It takes approximately two weeks from the date your application is processed for you to receive your license in the mail. However, the Auto Bureau will provide you with a temporary license that will suffice until your new EDL arrives.

What Documents do Children Need for Travel?

Children under the age of 16 will continue to need to present proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate, for land and sea travel. Border Patrol also asks that the child also have a parent present, or a notarized letter from a parent giving permission to travel across the border. An EDL is not required, though Enhanced Non-Driver IDs are available for children should they want one. Enhanced Learner’s Permits are also available, and the “Enhancement” will roll over to the teen’s Driver’s License when they are eligible.

Are There Other Options for Travel Documents Besides the EDL?

Yes, there are other options. You can get a US Passport book that is valid for 10 years and allows for land, sea and air travel anywhere in the world. It costs $110.00 and a mandatory $25 processing fee. You can also apply for a Passport card, which is valid for 10 years and allows for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. It costs $30 and a mandatory $25 processing fee. You can also apply for a Nexus card, which is valid for 5 years after a background check and interview. It is good for land and sea travel only and costs $50.  You can apply for a passport or passport easily through the Erie County Clerk’s Office at 92 Franklin St., Buffalo.

However, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offers residents two options: a standard Real ID or an Enhanced ID .

So what’s the difference between the two?

Both the Real ID and Enhanced ID will allow travelers to board domestic flights and enter some federal buildings.

However, Enhanced ID’s will also allow residents to cross the United States land and sea borders from Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean countries, without the need for a passport.

Enhanced ID’s do not authorize air travel between these countries, strictly land and sea travel. Passports are still required for all international flights.

Real ID’s are marked with a star logo in the top-right corner, with Enhanced ID’s featuring a banner that reads “Enhanced,” along with an American flag in the bottom-right corner.

Standard ID cards, which are still valid for all other purposes outside of domestic flights and entering federal buildings, now feature the phrase “Not For Federal Purposes” in the top-right corner.

Those who wish to obtain a Real ID must go to a DMV office. You cannot get a Real ID online, by phone, or through the mail.

There is no additional cost to get a Real ID. However, all normal transaction fees still apply. An Enhanced ID will cost an extra $30, in addition to the normal transaction fees.

Valid U.S. Passports are already Real ID compliant and can continue to be used to board flights .

  • If the name on your license, permit, or non-driver ID application does not match the name on your proof of identity, lawful status, and Social Security, you must bring in court- or government-issued proof documenting the event causing your name change(s), such as a marriage license, divorce decree, adoption, or court-order document.

Residents of New York will need a REAL ID or Enhanced ID to board an airplane starting October 2020

NEW YORK – New York residents will need an enhanced driver’s license or a REAL ID compliant driver’s license by October 1, 2020, if they want to use it to get on a domestic flight, enter certain federal buildings or enter military bases. With that in mind, it is highly recommended that New Yorkers who plan to travel upgrade from a standard driver’s license to a REAL ID or enhanced license before the deadline.

New York’s REAL ID driver’s licenses have a star in the upper right corner to indicate that it meets federal regulations that establish minimum security standards. The enhanced driver’s license has a U.S. flag on the bottom right of the license.

The upgraded REAL IDs will be required starting October 1, 2020, to board a flight. The enhanced IDs, which cost $30 in addition to the regular transaction fees, are good to board a plane and enter the U.S. by land or sea to cross into the U.S. coming from Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean. New York residents have the option to upgrade to a REAL ID if their license does not currently have the star or they can opt to keep their older standard driver’s license. However, a standard credential—without the star—will not be valid to board a flight or to access secure federal facilities, including military bases and some federal offices.

To get the REAL ID star, individuals will need to visit their local New York Department of Motor Vehicles office in person and bring certain documents to prove U.S. citizenship and New York residency. Required documents include one proof of identity, one proof of legal presence, two proofs of New York residency, one proof of your social security number (if you’ve been issued one) and a current driver’s license if you are applying to exchange one issued by another U.S. state.

Transportation Security Administration officers who staff the ticket document checking station at airports will not allow travelers into the checkpoint without a REAL ID or enhanced license or another form of acceptable ID after October 1, 2020, because of a federal law (The REAL ID Act of 2005) that mandates that a REAL ID is needed for federal purposes. REAL ID is a coordinated effort by the federal government to improve the reliability and accuracy of driver’s licenses and identification cards. The improvements are intended to inhibit terrorists’ ability to evade detection by using fraudulent identification.

Travelers will begin seeing new signs at airports nationwide in the coming weeks to remind people that REAL ID-compliant licenses or other acceptable forms of ID, such as a valid passport, federal government PIV card or U.S. military ID, will be mandatory for air travel beginning on October 1, 2020. Critically important, on October 1, 2020, individuals who are unable to verify their identity will not be permitted to enter the TSA checkpoint and will not be allowed to fly.

For more information and details about how to obtain a REAL ID driver’s license, enhanced license or identification card in New York, and to determine which form of ID is right for you, visit the New York Department of Motor Vehicles website .

U.S. issues travel warning for Israel with Iran attack believed to be imminent and fear Gaza war could spread

By Debora Patta , Tucker Reals

Updated on: April 13, 2024 / 5:25 PM EDT / CBS News

Update: Iran launched drone attacks against Israel on Saturday. Read CBS News'  latest coverage here .

Tel Aviv  — Israel is bracing for a worst-case scenario that U.S. officials believe could materialize within just hours — the possibility of a direct attack on Israeli soil by Iran in retaliation for a strike almost two weeks ago that killed seven Iranian military officers. Iran has vowed to take revenge for Israel killing its commanders, who were hit by an April 1 strike on the Iranian embassy in Syria's capital.

Two U.S. officials told CBS News that a major Iranian attack against Israel was expected as soon as Friday, possibly to include more than 100 drones and dozens of missiles aimed at military targets inside the country. Sources have told CBS News the retaliation could include attacks carried out both by Iranian forces, and proxy groups around the region that it has been funneling additional arms to for weeks.

The officials said it would be challenging for the Israelis to defend against an attack of that magnitude, and while they held out the possibility that the Iranians could opt for a smaller-scale attack to avoid a dramatic escalation, their retaliation was believed to be imminent.

Asked Friday how imminent he believes an attack is, President Biden responded, "I don't want to get into secure information, but my expectation is sooner than later." The president urged Iran not to move forward, saying his message to Tehran was: "Don't."

Tehran has not indicated publicly how or when it will return fire, so it's unclear how far Iran's leaders will go. If they decide to carry out a direct attack on Israel, there's fear it could blow Israel's ongoing war against Iranian ally Hamas up into a much wider regional conflict.

With the Iranian retaliation expected at any time, the U.S. State Department on Thursday warned Americans in Israel not to travel outside major cities, which are better protected from incoming rocket fire by the country's Iron Dome missile defense system. The latest guidance noted that travel by U.S. government employees in Israel could be further restricted with little notice as things develop in the tinderbox region.

"Whoever harms us, we will harm them," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Thursday as he visited troops at an Israel Defense Forces airbase. "We are prepared … both defensively and offensively."

Iran-Burning Flags Of The U.S. And Israel

On Saturday, all U.S. embassies in the Middle East were put on high alert and required to hold emergency action committee meetings. Diplomats in Lebanon and Israel were specifically told not to travel to certain areas within those countries.

Sima Shine, a security expert and former official with Israel's national intelligence agency Mossad, told CBS News it was a dangerous moment for the region, and the "most worried" she has been. She said anxiety over an all-out war was likely just as high "on both sides, in Israel and in Iran."

If Iran does choose to strike Israel directly, it could involve a complex missile and drone attack similar to the one Iranian forces launched against a Saudi oil facility in 2019 .

"They will try to do it on the military or some military asset," Shine predicted. "But the question will be the damage. If there would be many injured people, killed or injured … I think it has the potential for a huge escalation."

Iran- International Jerusalem Day Rally In Tehran

Shine stressed, however, that she still believes neither side actually wants a regional conflict.

U.S. "really trying to avoid war"

The U.S. sent a senior general to Israel this week to coordinate with the close American ally on any response it might make to an Iranian attack. Speaking Friday on "CBS Mornings," America's top military officer said, "we're really trying to avoid war."

"This is part of the dialogue that I have with my counterparts within the region, to include the Israeli chief of defense, who I talked to yesterday," said Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr., adding that the U.S. military was "doing things not only to prevent a war, but at the same time, one of my primary things is to make sure all the forces in the region are protected."

"My role, as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, is to plan and prepare," Brown said. "That's one thing we do very well."

Brown's Israeli counterpart, Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, "completed a comprehensive situational assessment on the readiness of the IDF for all scenarios," Israel's military said Friday.

"The IDF is very strongly prepared, both offensively and defensively, against any threat," Halevi was quoted as saying in the statement. "The IDF continues to monitor closely what is happening in Iran and different arenas, constantly preparing to deal with existing and potential threats in coordination with the United States Armed Forces."

The IDF said the visiting U.S. general, Central Command chief Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, was taking part in the IDF's situational assessment.

The dilemma for Iran, said Israeli expert Shine, is to figure out how to deliver its promised response to Israel's attack in Syria, but in a way that does not lead to further escalation. Likewise, Shine said Israel could choose to show restraint when it responds to whatever Iran eventually does.

If either side gets the balance wrong, the consequences for the region, and even the world, could be dire.
