The Ports Of Call On Cruises From Cape Town

A cruise from Cape Town is a great way to see South Africa and its many ports. There are a variety of cruises available, so you can choose the one that best fits your needs. You can also expect to see some amazing scenery, including Table Mountain and the city of Cape Town itself.

Cape Town, South Africa

Located on the shores of Table Bay, Cape Town (in the western Cape) is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist destinations in South Africa. The city is home to a number of iconic landmarks, including Table Mountain, Lion's Head, and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. Cape Town is also a great jumping-off point for exploring the rest of South Africa, with many world-renowned wine regions, game reserves, and beaches located within a short drive of the city. And the perfect start on a...

Walvis Bay, Namibia

Located on the coast of Namibia, Walvis Bay is a bustling port city and the perfect stop for those looking to explore everything this beautiful country has to offer. From here, you can take day trips to the nearby towns of Swakopmund and Luderitz, or head out into the stunning Namib Desert. No matter what you decide to do, you're sure to have an incredible time in Walvis Bay.

Mossel Bay, South Africa

Mossel Bay is a beautiful town located on the southern coast of South Africa. It's well known for its stunning beaches, relaxed atmosphere, and delicious seafood. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities in Mossel Bay, including swimming, fishing, surfing, and windsurfing. There are also a number of restaurants and bars in town, as well as a few museums and other attractions.

Cruise to Nowhere

A cruise to nowhere is exactly what it sounds like: a cruise ship that sets sail for the open seas with no specific destination in mind. These cruises usually last for two nights, making them the perfect getaway for people who need a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life but don't have the time (or money) for a longer vacation.

Luderitz, Namibia

Luderitz is a small town in Namibia situated on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. It's a popular stop for cruise ships traveling between Europe and South Africa, and it's easy to see why. Luderitz is full of history, natural beauty, and outdoor adventure. During the 2022/2023 season, MSC Cruises doesn't land in Luderitz, MSC is bringing Luderitz back for the 2023/2024 season.

Port Elizabeth, South Africa

Port Elizabeth is a beautiful town in South Africa that is often overlooked by tourists. There's no shortage of things to see and do in Port Elizabeth. Some of the top attractions include visiting the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World, exploring the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, and taking a leisurely stroll through St George's Park. For those interested in history, a visit to the Donkin Reserve is a must. And of course, no trip to Port Elizabeth would be complete without spending some...

Repositioning Cruise

A repositioning cruise, also called a grand voyage, is a cruise that brings a ship back from South Africa to Europe. The itineraries on the 2022/2023 grand voyages will see Ile Maurice, Reunion, Seychelles, Jordan, cross the Suez Canal to reach the Mediterranean and land in Greece, and Italy. Both the MSC Sinfonia and the MSC Orchestra are due to travel back to Europe at the end of the 2022/2023 season.

Welcome aboard MSC Cruises, where every journey is an adventure waiting to unfold. Whether you're planning a family getaway or a romantic escape, we've put together answers to your most pressing questions to make your cruise experience seamless and unforgettable.

Q: Can 4 adults share a 4-sleeper cabin or is it 2 adults and 2 kids?

A: Yes, 4 adults can comfortably share a 4-berth cabin, ensuring everyone enjoys the cruise together.

Q: Do kids cruise free?

A: Yes, children cruise free, paying only mandatory port charges and taxes.

Q: How do the drinks packages work?

A: MSC offers a range of drinks packages designed to enhance your cruise experience. Pre-purchase before you cruise and save 10–12% compared to onboard prices. Choose from:

Cocktails & Spirits Package: Valid for all cocktails, mixed drinks, and spirits.

Beer, Ciders, Coolers, Wine and Soft Drinks Package: Valid for local and imported beers, ciders, wines by the glass, spirit coolers, mineral water, sodas, and energizers.

Soft Drinks and Ice Cream Package: Valid for sodas, juices, and take-away ice cream.

Water and Hot Drinks Package: Valid for mineral water, classic and special coffee drinks, hot chocolate, and hot tea.

Enjoy your beverages at bars, lounges, restaurants onboard, and even on island destinations.

Q: How do shore excursions work?

A: Explore each destination with MSC's carefully planned shore excursions. Book in advance to save up to 20% and avoid queues onboard. Focus your time and budget on what matters most – discovering new places and creating lasting memories.

Q: What’s the difference between an inside cabin and a balcony cabin?

A: The primary difference is the presence of a private outdoor space. Inside cabins do not have windows or portholes, relying on artificial lighting. They are budget-friendly and ideal for those who prioritize other aspects of the cruise. Balcony cabins, however, feature a private balcony with seating, allowing passengers to enjoy fresh air and scenic views directly from their cabin.

Q: Is a passport needed on local cruises?

A: For cruises within South African borders, such as our 'cruise to nowhere' and coastal voyages between Cape Town and Durban, no passport is needed. A valid ID (green book or ID card) is sufficient.

Q: If cruising to Mozambique/Namibia and not planning on getting off the ship, why is a passport needed?

A: Passports are required as you'll be crossing international waters, leaving South African borders.

Q: What does 'cruise to nowhere' really mean?

A: These cruises sail out to sea for a short journey (usually 2 nights) or along the South African coastline without docking at any ports. The ship itself is the main destination! From pools and spas to theatres, casinos, and discos – making your onboard experience unforgettable.

Things to Do on an Africa Cruise with MSC Cruises

Africa offers MSC cruisers an adventure. You can get a great view of Cape Town from Table Mountain and you’ll definitely want to experience a true African safari. Then see the other side of Africa with a visit to South Africa's Stellenbosch wine country. Featured below are just a few of the possible excursions on an Africa cruise with MSC Cruises:

MSC Cruises - Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa

  • Table Mountain (Cape Town, South Africa) Explore the most prominent landmark in South Africa, the 3,558 foot high cliff of Table Mountain that overlooks Cape Town. The views of the whole town and the Atlantic coast are spectacular.

MSC Cruises - Beach in Durban, South Africa

  • Durban City Tour (Durban, South Africa) Explore the beachfront’s “Golden Mile” of Durban, where groups of Indian women walk on the sand to collect bottles of seawater to use as medicine. You’ll also experience Durban City Hall and Phansi Museum to learn more about Durban’s history of development since the Indians arrived in the 19th century.

MSC Cruises - Robben Island Prison in Cape Town

  • Robben Island Museum (Cape Town, South Africa) Robben Island was a former prison during a time of racial discrimination and a defense station for World War II. Today, you can tour the UNESCO site while being guided by ex-political prisoners. Guests will have the opportunity to interact with the exhibit that teaches the history of apartheid in South Africa.

MSC Cruises - Zebras in South African Game Reserve

  • Hluhluwe Game Reserve Safari (Durban, South Africa) This magical safari adventure takes place in the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve where you’ll be sure to see lions, rhinos, elephants, buffalos and leopards, otherwise known as the “Big Five.” The Big Five are also accompanied by 84 other species, including giraffes, zebras and an extensive variety of birds.

MSC Cruises - Vineyards of South Africa

  • Wine Country (Cape Town, South Africa) South African wine is a unique experience to be enjoyed as you tour the fascinating estates like Stellenbosch. Your relaxing visit will include tastings of the various wines and cheeses. The estates also give extraordinary views of the town for perfect pictures every time.

MSC Cruises - Port Elizabeth, South Africa

  • South Africa’s Windy City (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) Along the Algoa Bay sits the “Windy City” of South Africa, Port Elizabeth. The town was founded by British settlers in 1820 and was just recently home to the World Cup of 2010. Today, tourists begin their journey through the city at the Donkin Heritage Trail where they can walk through local art work and Victorian buildings.

Send us a review and photographs of your cruise from Cape Town & earn cruise vouchers .

Cruises from Cape Town restart with the arrival of the MSC Musica on the 12th March 2025! Durban has the warm water, but imagine gazing upon Table Mountain from aboard a ship with a cocktail in hand :)

To get a cruise quotation from Cape Town please fill in the form below - the questions have been especially tailored so as to enable our cruise experts to find the best cruise special for you. (Email  [email protected]  if you're experiencing difficulties).

Cruise Routes

There are Cape Town cruises to Namibia (Walvis Bay), Durban, Italy and Southampton. Popular routes are:

Cruise tip: Make 100% certain that you attend the sailaway party on your departure from Cape Town, as it offers the magnificent backdrop of Table Mountain.

Here's the view you can expect when cruising to Cape Town :

If your ship is in Table Bay at dawn, this is the view you can enjoy as you sail from Cape Town :

9 January 2018: The Department of Home Affairs together with SA immigration will be implementing their new Biometric System which will apply to all passengers who will be embarking on the 9th of January 2018 departure. The Biometric System will be rolled out at the Cape Town terminal as part of this new pilot project. The Biometric data capturing process, which is integral to the success of the project refers to the capturing of anatomical or physiological data by which a person can be uniquely identified - in this case your fingerprint data will be captured at the port when you begin the embarkation process. Please be aware that the embarkation process will be delayed due to this new system and we thank you for your patience in advance.

19th January 2015: The MSC Opera is unable to enter the port of Cape Town, due to strong winds.

17th March 2014: The MSC Sinfonia sails from Cape Town for the last time, on her way to Genoa. She is not returning to South Africa's shores for the 2014/2015 cruise season, instead she's heading to the dry dock to be stretched and have 200 cabins added.

28 Feb 2014: With only a few weeks left before the Sinfonia leaves the Cape waters to go back to Italy, people are still trying to find cabins onboard this old favourite. There are still some open spots. Pop us a mail or fill in the form above to enquire.

27 Jan 2014 : The Queen Mary 2 arrives in Cape Town in the morning, docking at the Eastern Mole. It's great that she's here, but a pity that she couldn't dock at the V&A Waterfront. No surprise that Alan Winde (toursim MEC for the Western Cape) said that he was hoping that construction on Cape Town's dedicated terminal begins this year. The Queen Mary 2 leaves Cape Town for Durban on Wednesday the 29th January 2014.

17 March 2014. The MSC Sinfonia embarks on her last cruise from Cape Town, a repositioning cruise to Genoa, Italy. For the 2014/2015 season, MSC Cruises are sending only the MSC Opera to Cape Town's waters.

11 November 2013. The MSC Opera arrives in Cape Town to being the 2013/2014 South African cruise season.

December 2012. It's reported that the Transnet National Port Authority will, in 2013, proceed with a "request for proposals" to build a permanent cruise liner terminal at E-Berth in Cape Town harbour.

7 March 2011 The last time the MSC Melody sailed from CT

March 2012 South Africa's Department of Home Affairs moves aheads with its January directive to stop cruise ships from docking at Cape Town's V&A Waterfront. “For twenty years, security and immigration procedures have been managed without incident at Jetty Two. Out of nowhere, Home Affairs suddenly enforced a ban without an alternative tourist-friendly facility within the port. Tourists now have to dock amongst containers at a cold storage yard. This is no way to receive guests to our province.” says Alan Winde, Western Cape Minister of Economic Development & Tourism. Tariq Mellet, Director: Immigration Services, Western Cape, says that “There has been no recent decision to ban anything. A long-standing problem of non-compliance with the Immigration Act required the department to take steps in November to ensure compliance.”

MSC Orchestra's swimming pool, with Devils Peak, Table Mountain, Lions Head and Signal Hill in the background

2 Feb 2014 "We've recently returned from a fantastic holiday / cruise on the MSC Sinfonia – we were on the ship for a 3 night cruise, 17 to 20 January 2014 to Mossel Bay and enjoyed every minute. We were made to feel extremely welcome by the crew and they were so helpful with everything. The entertainment as well as the food were great, it was very relaxing and everything was awesome including the lovely restaurants and shops. There was lots to do including the club, sauna and gym and we thoroughly enjoyed it all! Hoping to return later in the year or next year for the 5 night cruise.......Can’t wait!" Jayne Rayner

2013. Amanda wrote a review of her CT to Durban cruise , which she did with the rest of her family. She recommends taking an official excursion into PE, booking an outside cabin and not to be put off by the pricing in US Dollars.

2013. Catharina sails from CT to St Helena Island : "We were amazed at the rich history the island has and the tourist highlights we managed to see in the short time we had available."

Cruises from Singapore

P&O Cruises offers cruises from Singapore to the Cape .

Tugs & pilot boats

Key an eye out in the harbour for the tugs & pilot boats. Always interesting to watch them bend into the wind & the waves crash onto their decks, as their brave crew assist ships in and out of the harbour

A CT travel agent wrote to tell us : "My client told me that many passengers disembarked in Cape Town and went straight to the airport to fly out again – without spending any time here at all! There was a small group that was spending just the day here and flying out in the evening. This is very strange." So if you're on a flight to Cape Town for the cruise, do spend some time touring around the city, or else you're missing out on half the adventure - see our CT day trips page, if you're short of ideas.

Port of Cape Town

Cruise ships generally dock at E-Berth in Duncan Dock (see map below). There is parking in the vicinity, although it gets pretty full on the day of a cruise, so you are advised to arrive early.

The Transnet National Ports Authority has budgeted R3billion to build a new passenger terminal in 2014, which is better located. On the 23rd September 2013 the Chief Executive of the Waterfront, David Green, said that they are preparing a bid for the new Cape Town cruise terminal to be at the Waterfront - they're submitting their bid in October 2013, after which Transnet Ports Authority were meant to spend 5 months deciding which bid to go with. The Waterfront believe they can increase their contribution to South Africa's GDP by 51% if they're allowed to develop a cruise terminal at the Waterfront.

On 1 July 2015 Transnet National Ports Authority announced that the V&A Waterfront was the preferred bidder for the Cape Town cruise terminal. The V&A Waterfront is responsible for operations, maintenance, and will transfer ownership back to the Transnet National Ports Authority in 2035. The cruise terminal is expected was completed around December 2017.

Cape Town harbour surrounded by Table Bay and the City of Cape Town

The Port of Cape Town is situated in Table Bay and is managed by the Transnet National Port Authority. The port manages the most fresh fruit in South Africa. It has an impressive backdrop of Table Mountain and the Cape Town city, and part of it forms the Cape Town Waterfront, a major tourist attraction. There are some impressive hotels in the harbour area, like the nearby Cape Grace (the closest hotel to E-Berth), and these are well worth a visit before or after your cruise. Because of the strong south-easterly win in summer months, the harbour is sometimes closed to ships entering and exiting - which poses obvious challenges to passenger liners. The port is also home to the Royal Cape Yacht Club.

The establishment of the harbour in Cape Town dates back to the 6th April 1652 Jan van Riebeeck & co arrived in Cape Town to set up a resupply station for ships travelling from Europe to the East. In 1882 the Robinson Dry Dock was completed, and is today the oldest functioning dry dock worldwide.

"Welcome to the bottom of this article :) We hope you found it informative, and now have enough information to book your cruise from Cape Town. If not, please drop an email to [email protected] (in fact send us a note anyway, we love to hear from our readers). Wishing you blue skies and calm seas. Ciao."

The best Africa cruises for 2025 and 2026

Melissa Klurman

Nothing quite says "bucket list" like a cruise to Africa.

You get wildlife safaris, ancient wonders of the world and some of the most fascinating cultural epicenters on the globe all in one trip. Are you starting to understand why a cruise here is so unique?

Africa is a big continent, and you'll find almost as many ways to cruise as marvels to see. Whether you want to visit Africa's tropical Seychelles islands in the Indian Ocean or prefer the dramatic red sands of Namibia on the Atlantic coast, you can do it on a cruise ship — even on the same itinerary.

And that's not all! You can book intimate river cruises on Botswana's Chobe River or Egypt's Nile River, a rite of passage for many a cruise fan. (We've highlighted Viking below for its vast number of sailings, but Lindblad/National Geographic, Uniworld and Avalon Waterways all offer Nile itineraries as well.)

Whether you're looking for an expedited South African highlights cruise or a multiweek African continent adventure, you can find a cruise itinerary to suit you. Here are our picks for the best Africa cruises in 2025 and 2026.

Norwegian Cruise Line: 11- to 13-night South Africa & Madagascar cruises

msc cruise 2024 cape town to namibia

Norwegian Cruise Line has some of the most robust and varied Africa cruise options of all the big-ship lines, with 13 sailings ranging from 11 to 21 nights in 2025 alone.

Among the most popular offerings is the Cape Town to Mauritius (or reverse) route on Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Dawn. These 11- to 13-night cruises combine the highlights of Cape Town with the wildlife wonders of Madagascar. The latter is one of the most enthralling safari destinations in Africa; 90% of the plant and animal species on the island are endemic, including 103 varieties of lemurs. But Madagascar is also a destination that even hardcore safari enthusiasts often skip because flights and lodges are hard to book, making a cruise the perfect way to get there.

NCL's itineraries also visit Pointe de Galets, Reunion — a lush beach and rainforest area on the Indian Ocean. Norwegian Dawn's 12-night itinerary adds a stop in Maputo, Mozambique.

Who should go : The 1,944-passenger Norwegian Sky and 2,290-passenger Norwegian Dawn are some of the smallest and oldest ships in Norwegian Cruise Line's fleet. They suit cruisers looking for a more intimate experience than what you'll find on bigger ships. Africa cruises tend to draw cruisers who care more about the destinations they visit than onboard attractions, but the ships will still entertain you with multiple eateries and bars and lounges, several pools and whirlpools, a casino and a theater with nightly shows.

Viking: 11-night Pharaohs and Pyramids cruise

msc cruise 2024 cape town to namibia

Not all Africa cruises are on the ocean. A trip down the Nile River is a tick on many a traveler's wish list, and Viking offers one of the easiest-to-book options with seven ships sailing its Pharaohs & Pyramids cruises . In 2025 and 2026, sailings depart nearly every day in the October to March high season, though no sailings are scheduled for the second half of June through the end of July.

The round-trip Cairo sailings feel incredibly exclusive, with ships carrying just 82 passengers on board. The itinerary begins with several days in Cairo, where guests can visit the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx, museums and souks before sailing down the Nile. Your ship will linger multiple days in Luxor, Egypt, home of the Valley of the Kings; spend a day in Qena, Egypt, to see the Dendera Temple complex; and stop in the ports of Esna, Aswan, Kom Ombo and Edfu, Egypt.

Who should go : Adults-only cruise line Viking appeals to travelers who appreciate a relaxed onboard experience centered around learning about a destination via guest lectures — in this case, Egyptologists — and shore excursions. The cruise line's passengers tend to be retirement age or older.

Viking's fans love the ships' uncluttered Scandinavian-inspired decor and pricing that includes wine and beer with lunch and dinner, gratuities and one free shore excursion per port. The ships do not have an onboard casino or entertainment spaces beyond the main lounge area, but a shaded pool and sundeck offer a relaxing outdoor venue to watch the river scenery.

Best transatlantic cruises for 2024 and 2025, plus tips and what to expect

A transatlantic cruise ranks high on many travelers' bucket lists, especially those who love the camaraderie and adventure of a voyage by ship. Today's roughly 4,000-nautical-mile transatlantic crossing is more akin to the preaviation "Grand Tour" wealthy Americans once enjoyed than the immigration journeys many of our European ancestors made from the 17th to early 20th centuries.

Leisurely and luxurious, a one-way sailing offers fine dining, wellness-oriented pampering, enlightening lectures, glamorous nightlife and plenty of time to relax. Transatlantic cruises are also a solution for travelers who prefer not to fly and a tempting option for cruise lovers seeking a longer itinerary at an affordable price.

Is a transatlantic cruise right for everyone? Not necessarily, especially for anyone prone to moderate to severe sea sickness. However, for those who love sea days — and many cruisers do — a crossing can offer an uninterrupted "floating resort" experience; plus, it provides the added bonus of delivering you to Europe or returning you home without a cramped transatlantic flight.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

Here's everything you need to know about cruising the Atlantic — plus a selection of the best transatlantic cruises you can book in 2024 and 2025.

Which cruise lines offer transatlantic crossings?

While Cunard is most famous for its weekly crossings between Southampton, England, and New York City — which sail from April to December on its ocean liner Queen Mary 2 — pretty much every major cruise line offers transatlantic crossings.

These generally occur in the spring (late March to early May) and fall (September to November). In the spring, ships are repositioned from the Caribbean to Europe, and in the fall, vessels sail from Europe to the U.S. to begin Canada-New England and Caribbean itineraries.

Also known as repositioning cruises , these sailings are usually longer than a traditional crossing and often include several port calls beyond the city of embarkation and disembarkation.

Even better, cruise fares for these itineraries are typically one-third to one-half the price of a cruise of the same length that visits a new port daily. This makes them a great deal for travelers looking to settle into shipboard life rather than just sightsee.

These types of transatlantic/repositioning itineraries are offered by Azamara, Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Oceania, Regent, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Seabourn, SeaDream Yacht Club, Silversea, Star Clippers, Windstar, Viking and Virgin.

When is the best time of year for transatlantic cruises?

The best time to take a transatlantic cruise depends on what you're looking for: great weather, smooth seas, the best price or specific ports of call.

Generally speaking, May, June and July are recommended for warmer weather and gentler seas — before the Atlantic hurricane season peaks in August, September and October — although storms can arise any time of the year.

March, April and November — while not ideal due to cooler temperatures that can limit on-deck and poolside enjoyment — are a good option and a terrific value. This is especially true if the ship's route is a southerly one between Florida and the Mediterranean rather than between northern Europe and New York.

As noted above, the best prices are generally in spring and fall for repositioning cruises. These itineraries might also visit several appealing ports in the Mediterranean or Caribbean as well as call on the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, Iceland or Bermuda in the Atlantic.

Related: Why I was wrong about transatlantic cruises

How long does the crossing take?

It varies. The classic nonstop transatlantic itinerary aboard Queen Mary 2 is a seven-night voyage between New York and Southampton (and vice versa). On the other hand, transatlantic repositioning cruises generally range in length from 11 to 21 nights, with an average of 14 nights (seven or eight of them typically sea days).

Will the seas be rough?

It's up to Mother Nature. At times, the Atlantic can be smooth sailing, even in spring and fall. Yet unpredictable wind and water current patterns can create rough seas seemingly out of nowhere any time of year.

Captains can generally maneuver around storms — and try to do so whenever possible for the comfort of all onboard. Additionally, modern cruise ships are equipped with stabilizers that reduce a ship's rolling motion due to wind or waves.

However, if you're even slightly prone to seasickness, don't throw caution to the wind. You'll be better off on a larger ship (pick a midship cabin on a lower deck); also, be sure to pack medication, patches, bands or whatever works best for you. While it might seem counterintuitive, having a window or balcony actually helps offset seasickness since it offers fresh air and a horizon view. If you're concerned, opt for an ocean-view or balcony cabin over an inside one.

Which side of the ship is best for a transatlantic crossing?

It honestly doesn't make much difference whether you book a cabin on the port (left) or starboard (right) side of the ship since most daytime views will be of the ocean. However, if you're departing from a Mediterranean port, say Rome or Barcelona, for a southerly crossing, book a starboard cabin; this might offer a view of the Rock of Gibraltar if your ship transits between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic during daylight hours. For a U.S.-to-Europe eastward crossing, you'd want the opposite — a port-side cabin.

Similarly, if your crossing takes you from northern Europe on a northerly route to the U.S., and you want to be among the first to spot land (perhaps Greenland or Newfoundland), book a starboard cabin. If you are cruising into New York Harbor just before dawn and want to see the Statue of Liberty from your cabin, book on the port side.

More important for an Atlantic crossing location-wise is your cabin's deck number and whether the cabin is situated forward, midship or aft. Generally, the ship's movement through rough seas will feel less severe if your cabin is midship and on one of the lower or middle decks versus the top-most decks.

Which ports do transatlantic cruises visit?

Where you embark and disembark will determine your route and the ports you potentially call on. Ships repositioning to or from the Baltic Sea and the British Isles generally take a northerly route. Vessels sailing from the Mediterranean cross on a more southerly route, especially if they are repositioning to or from a winter home port in Florida.

On a northerly crossing, you can expect to embark in a port such as Copenhagen; Rotterdam, Netherlands; Southampton or New York. Depending on the length of the cruise, expect to call on ports in Ireland (Dublin or Cork), Iceland (Reykjavik), Greenland (Qaqortoq or Nuuk), Atlantic Canada (St. John's in Newfoundland, or Sydney or Halifax in Nova Scotia) and Bermuda (King's Wharf).

On a southerly crossing between Barcelona or Rome in the Mediterranean and Miami or Fort Lauderdale, typical ports of call include Madeira; Grand Canary or Tenerife in the Canary Islands; Ponta Delgada in the Azores; and one or two islands in the Caribbean, such as St. Maarten or Puerto Rico.

Is it better to book an eastbound or westbound cruise?

Which direction you book really depends on whether you're aboard for the experience or you're using the crossing as a substitute for a flight to reach the other side of the ocean. Below are a few factors to keep in mind.

Aside from Queen Mary 2 crossings, westbound transatlantic repositioning cruises (from Europe to the U.S.) take place in the fall during the Atlantic hurricane season; some are also scheduled for mid-to-late November when storm formation has generally diminished. Eastbound cruises (from the U.S. to Europe) happen in spring, a season also often known for periods of gray skies and rain.

When considering westbound versus eastbound crossings, factor in the time change. While a transatlantic cruise is a terrific way to avoid the jet lag caused by flying across multiple time zones in a single day, you will be subject to almost daily reminders to reset your clock.

On westbound cruises, you'll have to set your clock back at night, thus gaining an extra hour of sleep on most days. On eastbound cruises, you'll set it ahead an hour and lose an hour of leisure time or sleep.

Another factor to keep in mind is that unless you plan to return home on another transatlantic cruise, you'll also need to book a one-way flight. Before committing to a specific eastbound or westbound itinerary, always check your flight options. One-way tickets are sometimes more expensive than round-trip fares.

Best transatlantic cruises for 2024 and 2025

There are dozens of opportunities to cross the Atlantic by cruise ship, but here are some of the best itineraries available in the next two years.

Cunard's Queen Mary 2

  • Transatlantic crossings: September through December 2024 and 2025

There's nothing quite like it. Cunard 's weekly transatlantic crossing between New York and Southampton aboard the 2,691-passenger Queen Mary 2 celebrates the grand age of ocean liners with a level of pomp and ceremony that appeals to Cunard loyalists, bucket-listers and memory-making couples or families celebrating a milestone anniversary or birthday.

These eight-night eastbound and six-night westbound voyages are all about the sea. There are interludes of culinary enjoyment and evening entertainment designed for travelers who appreciate formality and glamor.

A typical day might include time in the library perusing the largest book collection at sea, getting an illuminating astronomy lesson in the onboard planetarium and enjoying traditional afternoon tea.

The evening lineup generally starts with a multicourse dinner (same table and same waiter nightly) followed by a Broadway-inspired show, an abridged Shakespeare play or even a magic act. The ship is also famous for its Gala Evenings, capped off with Champagne sipping and dancing to a live orchestra. Yes, pack those ballgowns and tuxes.

Cruise fares start at $1,818 per person for an inside cabin and $2,238 per person for a balcony room.

Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady

  • 16-night Rome to Miami: Nov. 28-Dec. 14, 2024
  • 15-night Miami to Casablanca and Barcelona cruises: May 3-18, 2025

Virgin Voyages ' 2,770-passenger Scarlet Lady has an onboard ambience that rivals a youthful beach club. Passengers and crew will keep the party going day and night this fall on a 16-night Rome to Miami transatlantic sailing . The sailing has calls on Barcelona and Malaga in Spain; Funchal on the island of Madeira; and Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

Or party in reverse on the ship's 15-night Miami to Casablanca and Barcelona crossing in May 2025. It stops in Grand Canary and Santa Cruz de Tenerife; Casablanca, Morocco; and Barcelona.

The ship's 20 excellent dining venues, cutting-edge entertainment (campy and a bit naughty — think Drag Queen Bingo), an impressive lineup of wellness classes (from yoga at sunrise to On-the-Upswing Bungee Aerobics) and fun activities ('90s Boy Band Dance Class, anyone?) provide plenty of ways to pass the time.

Cruise fares start at $3,326 per cabin (or less than $1,700 per person) for the Rome-to-Miami sailing and $3,976 per cabin (or around $1,988 per person) for the Miami-to-Barcelona sailing.

Disney Cruise Line's Disney Dream and Fantasy

  • 13-night eastbound transatlantic cruise: May 4-17, 2025
  • 13-night westbound transatlantic cruise: Oct. 20-Nov. 2, 2024 and 2025

Certain Disney fans — namely childless adult couples and empty nesters — love the brand's storytelling and Imagineering but prefer not to share a two-week cruise with hundreds of kids and teens. These 13-night eastbound and westbound crossings from Port Canaveral to Barcelona and from Southampton to Port Canaveral aboard 2,500-passenger Disney Dream or 4,000-passenger Disney Fantasy offer a solution to that dilemma.

Each of these transatlantic cruises occurs when almost everyone ages 5 to 18 is still in school. Yes, some kids will likely be on board, but certainly not in overwhelming numbers.

These crossings feature nine to 11 sea days during which Disney Cruise Line offers all kinds of immersive entertainment, excellent onboard dining and a southerly route in spring that means plenty of pool time. On top of that, each sailing includes a mix of culturally rich ports.

On the eastbound crossing, they are Ponta Delgada and Lisbon, Portugal; and Cadiz, Cartagena and Barcelona, Spain. On the westbound crossing, the ports are Ponta Delgada and the new Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Eastbound fares for balcony cabins start at $4,937 for two adults (or just under $2,500 per person). Westbound fares start at $5,360 for an inside cabin (about $2,680 per person).

Holland America's Nieuw Statendam

  • 28-night Adriatic Crossing: Stromboli, Andalusia & Azores: Nov. 1-29, 2025

For a shoulder-season meander through the Adriatic and Mediterranean followed by a transatlantic crossing, Holland America 's 28-night Adriatic Crossing: Stromboli, Andalusia & Azores visits 14 ports in eight countries. This makes it a true hybrid of an ocean crossing and a traditional cruise.

The sailing, aboard the 3,665-passenger Nieuw Statendam, departs from Athens and visits ports in Greece, Croatia, Montenegro, Italy, Albania, Spain and Portugal before arriving in Fort Lauderdale. Of the 12 sea days, two include scenic cruising.

The voyage takes place in November, so expect temperatures to be on the cooler side in most ports and during the crossing. It's a good thing, then, that Nieuw Statendam has an indoor pool with a retractable roof. Holland America passengers, mostly older retirees, can also pass the time dining at each of the 10 onboard restaurants and enjoy entertainment that includes live bands at the B.B. King's Blues Club and Rolling Stone Rock Room.

At $3,249 per person for an inside cabin and $4,699 per person for a balcony cabin, fares are a great deal for a four-week sailing.

Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Ascent and Celebrity Apex

  • 13-night Bermuda and Portugal transatlantic: March 8-21, 2025

Inside cabins for that cruise start at $910 per person, and balcony rooms start at $1,163 per person.

Inside cabins start at $2,746 per person, and balcony cabins at $4,126 per person.

Bottom line

No matter your reason for considering a transatlantic cruise, you're guaranteed to experience the secret magic of sea days, with ample time to relax and unwind. With no land in sight for roughly a week, you can enjoy the ship's amenities without feeling rushed.

Make new friends over coffee or a game of bridge, watch movies in your cabin, learn more about the world during lectures by onboard experts, or treat yourself to rejuvenating massages and facials in the spa.

Even better, per-night rates are typically lower on crossings than on round-trip, port-intensive cruises. So, you can enjoy a longer sailing at a fraction of the usual cost. No matter which transatlantic cruise you deem best for your travel style and interests, it will surely be a memorable bucket-list trip.
