Profiles & Route Tour Down Under 2023

The 2023 season will, some say, begin at the Tour Down Under and both female and male pelotons will travel down to Australia for some early-year good weather and a prestigious race that distributes many points aswell.

The men's Tour Down Under will be back after being cancelled twice due to Covid-19 restrictions, and will take place in the Adelaide region from the 17th to 22nd of January 2023.

The race will come directly after the women's Tour Down Under. It will be a race for the puncheurs and classics riders to fight for the overall classification, with climbers in the mix aswell. It will be a very open race specially taking into consideration the early season form which will severely differ between riders.

PREVIEW | Tour Down Under 2023 - World Tour returns to racing in Australia with star-studded field

Profiles & Route Tour Down Under 2023

To begin with immediately, the riders have a 5.5-kilometer prologue in Adelaide which will set the first differences and make for an exciting day of racing. The route will be just north of the center of the Aussie city. It's a fast prologue, it features a few corners but none will truly be tight. It isn't exactly perfect for the purists because of that, however we shouldn't see any major surprises.

PREVIEW | Tour Down Under 2023 Prologue - INEOS big favourites for tricky time-trial

Profiles & Route Tour Down Under 2023

Stage 1 into Tanunda will be one for the sprinters surely, however it features a five-lap circuit with a 4.5Km; 3.7% ascent that could make it somewhat difficult for the pure sprinters if there is intention to accelerate the pace. Stage 1 of the Tour Down Under into Tanunda will be one for the sprinters surely however the 2023 edition has seen quite some changes in it's route and this day is a great example of it.

It isn't a stage that will be too difficult, and is actually rather simple, but interesting. It's a short 150-kilometer day that starts and ends in the city of Tanunda and sees a four-lap circuit which will decide the outcome of the stage. This features a climb, however it shouldn't prevent the fast men from fighting for the win.

The main climb of the circuit is Menglers Hill. 4.5 kilometers at 3.7% gradient, it isn't a hard ascent however at the same time it can't be shrugged off. If some teams are willing to push the pace the peloton can certainly string out, and with some riders on their January form, it wouldn't be a surprise to see quite a few lose contact. It won't break the peloton however, it summits with 13.5 kilometers to go. Some sprinters may be out of breath by the top, but there is the chance to recover. There will be a fast descent and a very straightforward run-up to the finish, it won't be a technical finish.

PREVIEW | Tour Down Under 2023 Stage 1 - Sprinters prepare for first head-to-head battle

Profiles & Route Tour Down Under 2023

Stage 2 of the Tour Down Under, into Victor Harbor won't be too different from the previous day, open for both classics riders, rouleurs and sprinters to succeed depending on what race scenario develops. It is a bit more difficult day to predict, immediately starting with an uphill ramp which may see some riders form a strong breakaway. It's a hilly day with some unpredictability as the riders head back into the sea. With 68 kilometers to go they will find a 3 kilometer climb at 6.8% however the legs will be saved towards the end of the stage.

It will be in Nettle Hill that the outcome of the stage can be played out. Not a brutal climb, it's 2 kilometers at 7.7% and summits with 22 kilometers to go. What will happen here is unknown but as the race lacks a queen stage attacks are very viable here, both on the ascent and right after. The toughest ramps come towards the end, and what follows is a rolling plateau before a finale that has very little of flat.

A fast descent will follow, then 3 kilometers at 2.9% that provide further springboard for attacks which finishes with 10 kilometers to go only. The road into Victor Harbor is then simple with no meaningful technical features. The finale is flat, but you can't expect any serious leadout if it does come to a sprint.

PREVIEW | Tour Down Under 2023 Stage 2 - Bettiol sees first GC test on dangerous hilly day

Profiles & Route Tour Down Under 2023

Stage 3 of the Tour Down Under will see a finale in Campbelltown. It is a hilly day that can be very important for the overall classification as the riders face the Corkscrew climb. It is a very short stage from Norwood to Campbelltown, at only 116 kilometers. It starts off climbing right away with 9.7 kilometers at 4.1% which may trigger attacks. A rolling and short day, it isn't to discard that some riders with GC ambitions may try to surprise, the terrain is not too bad for such kind of raid specially at this time of year.

This may be termed the queen stage, as it features the famous ascent of the steep Corkscrew road - 2.4Km at 9%. This will be a critical point of the race for the overall classification, it's steep gradients and switchbacks being more than enough for serious attacks to pop. Close to the finish, this may even be the toughest moment of the race and one where the GC riders will have to ride their very best performance.

The climb finishes with only six kilometers to the finish and the riders will very quickly reach the finish, as they encounter nothing but a fast and somewhat tricky descent, straight into the finish line where the leader's jersey may change hands.

PREVIEW | Tour Down Under 2023 Stage 3 - Corkscrew to define GC on second uphill battle

Profiles & Route Tour Down Under 2023

Stage 4 of the Tour Down Under will finish in Willunga, however without the ascent of the famous climb. It's a small day on the saddle through the McLaren Vale and one where it won't be easy for anyone to stay away, due to it's very simple and calm roads. Climbs will also be absent, however the finale into the famous town won't be too easy.

The sprinters are expected to come to the front, however this is a very interesting finale. The toughest grades of the day come at the finishing straight, as the organizers placed the finish line at the base of the climb to Old Willunga Hill.

There are no corners to take into consideration, however it is a 2.5 kilometer slight rise up, and the final around 500 meters see the gradients go up to 5%. Will it prevent a sprint? No, I wouldn't count on that. However the GC riders will get involved in the fight for bonifications, and within the sprinters so will be able to handle this terrain better than others that is certain.

PREVIEW | Tour Down Under 2023 Stage 4 - Sprinters face off in tricky Willunga finish

Profiles & Route Tour Down Under 2023

The final of racing at the Tour Down Under will be from Unley to Mount Lofty, with an uphill start, very short distances and explosive circuit climbs. It will be a day where chaos can rule and aggressive racing can benefit, to possibly turn the GC on it's head. Besides the uphill start, the riders will ride a four-lap circuit that concludes at the top of Mount Lofty, a 8.1-kilometer long ascent that averages 3%.

There are only 112.5 kilometers on the menu, it's a very short day on the bike and the GC gaps won't be too big, dozens of riders will be within striking distance and this is a very dangerous day, and a hard one to control if that is necessary. It is essentially a five-lap stage that each times reaches the summit of Mount Lofty.

The roads inbetween climbs always have a slight up or downhill tilt making it hard to organize and ride a consistent pace. The climb itself is 8.4 kilometers at 3% but is very inconsistent. Gradients above 10% will be present in the final 2.5 kilometers which average around 6%. Saving the legs can be worth it here as there is ground to launch an offensive, and the race will end atop the mountain in a beautiful way.

Tour Down Under 2023 Route stage 4: Port Willunga - Willunga

Finishing on High Street in Willunga, at the foot of the hill, is a break with tradition. Old Willunga Hill had been included since 2012. In fact, the last sprint finish in Willunga dates back to 2011, when Francisco Velose took the spoils ahead of Michael Matthews and Matthew Goss.

The route consist of two different laps. The first one is ridden once, the second 1.5 times. The last 2.4 kilometres rise at 2.9% to the line, so strongmen sprinters are expected to shine on this arrival.

KOM points are available twice in the passage through the finish line. The first time after 51.4 kilometres, the second time after 92.3 kilometres.

Two intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds each, while the first three riders one the finish line take time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds.

2024 Tour Championship leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler claims FedEx Cup payout with seventh win of season

Scheffler concluded an all-time campaign with the biggest money-earning victory of his career.

The final event of the 2024 PGA Tour season, the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club, was emblematic of the season as a whole. Everyone in the field attempted to catch Scottie Scheffler, and for a brief moment, a few even thought they might. Still, in the end, Scheffler slammed the door on their dreams, waltzed to yet another victory and claimed a $25 million bonus out of the $100 million FedExCup payout pool to go along with it.

Scheffler on Sunday became the first golfer since Tiger Woods in 2007 to win seven PGA Tour events in a single season. Only those two and Vijay Singh have won 7+ tournaments in the same campaign since 1983. Scheffler's scoring average of the 68 over the course of the season marked the lowest in Tour history.

It started going sideways for Scheffler, who took a five-shot lead into the Tour Championship finale, on the seventh hole when he nearly roped a drive out of bounds. The ball nestled up next to a tree, and Scheffler made bogey from there. Another bogey followed on the par-4 eighth hole when he shanked a bunker shot sideways and backwards from where he was aiming. Collin Morikawa birdied that same hole to cut the lead to two as everybody watching leaned forward in anticipation.

Then Scheffler birdied three straight holes to put a wrap on the 2024 FedEx Cup. He concluded his day with a 4-under 67 to finish at 30 under for the tournament and claim his first FedEx Cup trophy. The win brings his season-long total money earned to an astounding $62,228,357.

"I was a bit frustrated. I had a pretty simple up and down there," Scheffler said of the shank. "Outside of the ball being on the side slope, it's pretty basic. ... It definitely happened at the wrong time, [but] from there on out, I did some pretty nice stuff."

Scheffler claiming the FedEx Cup after already winning a Masters green jacket and Olympic gold medal -- along with his multiple victories in signature events -- is an extraordinary feat, but the way in which he came through Sunday deserves further perspective.

He reached a moment on Sunday when memories of blowing a six-shot lead in the final round of the 2022 Tour Championship could have crept into his mind and affected his play; instead, he went the other way, blowing open the tournament and destroying the rest of the best golfers in the world.

Scheffler is great because he's a huge talent who works extremely hard, but now he's bordering on legendary with 15 wins in the last 32 months and $125 million earned. He exists at a level mentally that few have ever reached.

That was the story of his season. Over and again, Scheffler spoke about how much pride he took in his ability to stay focused and reset mentally. It's one thing to say as much but quite another to hit a shank with $25 million on the line and get back after it immediately. That's what Scheffler achieved, and few endings have more appropriately summed up the overall narrative season than the conclusion of the Tour Championship.

Winning the FedEx Cup is not Scheffler's most notable achievement in a career full of them, but it is the one most emblematic of the player Scheffler has become and why he is far and away the best golfer in the world. Grade: A+

Here are the rest of our grades for the 2024 Tour Championship.

2. Collin Morikawa (-26): It was such a great effort from Morikawa, who seemed incredibly freed up from the back nine in his first round onward. There is a strange argument to make that Morikawa had the best season of his career despite not officially winning a PGA Tour event. He did end up winning an OWGR event by taking the fewest number of strokes at the Tour Championship, but he did not claim an official PGA Tour event because of the starting stroke differential between him and Scheffler to open the tournament. Regardless, I'm bullish on him in 2025 to have some win luck swing back in his favor. Grade: A

3. Sahith Theegala (-24): What a wild game. Theegala called a penalty on himself Saturday in the third round that cost him two strokes, and ultimately, $2.5 million. He would have finished tied for second alongside Morikawa with those two shots back and would have won the OWGR event. That's an unfortunate part of the deal, but it would not have deterred Theegala's decision. He was lights out on the weekend playing his last 27 holes in 13 under par. He's also going to be electric at the Presidents Cup. Grade: A

T4. Xander Schauffele (-19): The clear-cut second-best player in 2024 did not play like that at the Tour Championship until the end. Schauffele was the only golfer who could, with a straight face, say that he was even close to Scheffler's universe in 2024. Unfortunately, he stumbled a bit over the first few days at a golf course where he has historically played spectacularly. After starting two back of Scheffler, Schauffele finished 11 back of him on Sunday. Three birdies at the end of his final round, though, made up for it a bit as he earned $3 million more than he would have with three pars. That included a wild chip in at the final hole to complete the birdie streak. Grade: B+

T9. Rory McIlroy (-16): It was a weird final stretch of the season for the normally consistent McIlroy. He was quite volatile after the U.S. Open and did not do much at this event until a final round 66 on Sunday. It was still a nice year but not what McIlroy expects. It speaks to his outrageous ceiling that finishing T9 in the FedEx Cup is his second worst finish of the last seven years. "It's been a long season, and I'm going to just have to think about trying to build in a few extra breaks here and there next year and going forward because I felt like I hit a bit of a wall sort of post-U.S. Open, and still feel a little bit of that hangover," he said.  Grade: B

T14. Justin Thomas (-14 ): Jumped from nearly last to middle of the pack with a good Tour Championship. His performance probably gets him onto the Presidents Cup team, and it was representative of the grind-it-out season he put together. Nothing amazing, but he's slowly building back into the player he's been for the majority of his PGA Tour career. In a somewhat under-the-radar way, too. Grade: B+

T21. Keegan Bradley (-8): It's not a bad showing given the spot Bradley was in a few weeks ago when he narrowly made it to the BMW Championship. However, given that he started the week at 6 under and could only manage to get to 8 under by the end of the week, that's nevertheless a huge disappointment. To provide better context, Bradley started in the spot that receives $6 million and ended in the spot that receives less than $700,000. That's a tough fall after such an amazing week last week at the BMW Championship. Grade: B

Russell Henley 62

The best round of Sunday goes to Russell Henley who made eagle at the last to shoot 62 and jump all the way up to T4.

Scottie has ended the festivities

The last event went just like the season went. Everybody trying to catch Scottie and thinking they possibly could, and then him slamming the door on their dreams and waltzing to another victory.

Bounce back birdies

Following his shank out of a bunker on the 8th hole, Scheffler birdies the next two to push his lead back to four over Morikawa. Big boy birdies and emblematic of what he's done all year.

Scheffler shank

Scottie just shanked a bunker shot on the 8th hole and went on to make bogey to bring Collin Morikawa back into it. Morikawa now within two going to the 9th tee.

Scuffling Scottie

OK, Collin Morikawa has cut the lead to four shots. Scottie has made two bogeys in his last three holes, and Morikawa is now within striking distance. I wonder now if what happened in 2022 -- when Rory McIlroy ran down Scheffler from six back of him to start the day -- is starting to creep into Scheffler's head.

Scottie starts rolling

Scottie takes an early seven shot lead over Morikawa with a birdie at the first hole, although Morikawa has fought back to make it six with 14 holes left to play. The only other golfer within 10 right now is Sahith Theegala, who is -18.

Scottie and Collin ready to roll

18 holes for $25 million is crazy, but that's what two of the top 10 players in the world are about to play for during their final round at East Lake.

SKOWHEGAN — Beer lovers from around the country are expected to head to Skowhegan on Saturday for the town’s annual Labor Day weekend brew festival.

The Skowhegan Craft Brew Festival is set to feature more than 100 Maine-made craft beers, wines, ciders and spirits from 24 beverage producers, along with local food vendors and four musical acts, according to an announcement from the event’s organizer, the nonprofit organization Main Street Skowhegan.

The festival, which began in 2016, is expected to draw people from Maine, 13 other states and Canada, according to the announcement. So far, people from as far away from Texas, Arizona and Nevada have bought tickets, the organization said.

“We’re thrilled to draw people from near and far to Skowhegan for our annual brew festival,” Kristina Cannon, president and CEO of Main Street Skowhegan, said in the statement. “Not only do events showcase our growing community and all that we have to offer visitors, but they also bring people to town who spend money at our locally owned businesses. Brew fest, in particular, brings people back again and again to our community.”

Tickets are required to attend the brew festival, and can be purchased online at skowhegancraftbrewfest.com . A $50 general admission ticket includes unlimited beverage samples from 3 to 7 p.m. and a souvenir tasting glass. “Designated driver” tickets for those who do not wish to drink alcohol are $10.

Ticket prices increase by $5 the day of the festival, so organizers suggest buying tickets by 6 p.m. Friday. Advertisement

A “VIP hour” at 2 p.m., featuring free food samples, other goodies and live entertainment, is sold out.

The brew festival is to be held along the Kennebec River in downtown Skowhegan, where the event moved last year from its previous location on Water Street .

Skowhegan Craft Brew Festival draws hundreds of beer drinkers to new location

Organizers said last year that the move was intended to help promote ongoing economic revitalization efforts along the town’s waterfront, including the planned River Park. Other events, such as the annual River Fest in August , are intended to achieve that goal, too.

With a contractor on board and the permitting process in its final stages, construction of the in-river whitewater park portion of the overall development is expected to begin in spring 2025 , Cannon said recently.

Construction of Skowhegan whitewater River Park delayed until 2025

Main Street Skowhegan uses proceeds from the brew festival to support its ongoing economic development efforts, according to organizers. The event is sponsored by more than a dozen local businesses and organizations.

The festival is expected to take place no matter the weather. As of Thursday, the National Weather Service was predicting mostly cloudy skies in Skowhegan on Saturday, with high temperatures in the mid-70s, and a 50% chance of rain showers after 2 p.m.
