Indonesia’s President-Elect Meets Xi in China Before Visiting Japan Amid Regional Tensions

I ndonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto met Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing on Monday before heading to Japan for similar top-level talks amid rising tensions over the South China Sea.

Xi told Prabowo that China is willing to boost “all-round strategic cooperation” with Indonesia and make positive contributions to regional and world peace, China Central Television reported. Xi also said China is willing to deepen maritime cooperation with Indonesia, and help the Asean nation in poverty relief, according to CCTV.

Prabowo, who will succeed Joko Widodo in October, will have an audience with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Defense Minister Minoru Kihara on April 2 and 3. His plan to visit Japan was announced Monday, just days after China’s foreign ministry said Prabowo’s first international visit since winning the election in February would be to Beijing, describing the journey as an event that “fully demonstrates the robustness of China-Indonesia ties.”

The visit to Japan—a key U.S. ally—suggests that Prabowo will continue his predecessor’s middle-of-the-road strategy in navigating the U.S.-China rivalry. China is Indonesia’s biggest economic partner and is pouring more than $7 billion into the nation’s commodity processing capacity.

Confrontations between China and the Philippines have ratcheted up over the past year as President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. shifted his foreign policy back to the nation’s longtime ally, the U.S. Since Marcos took office in 2022, he has boosted security ties with Washington and its allies. He has also asserted the Philippines’ territorial claims, which overlap with China and other neighbors.

Jokowi has maintained a non-confrontational approach over the sea dispute—though Beijing’s claims cut into Indonesia’s exclusive economic zone—and Xi would prefer Indonesia continue that approach. Prabowo said during his campaign that he wouldn’t pick sides in the dispute.

China claims almost all of the waterway that’s vital for global trade and is estimated to contain vast energy reserves. Beijing has ignored a 2016 international court ruling that said its efforts to assert control over the South China Sea exceeded the law.

JAKARTA:  Indonesian President Joko Widodo met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday (Jul 26) in Beijing during the first leg of his three-day working visit to Northeast Asia.

Mr Widodo is the first foreign leader to visit China since the Winter Olympics in February as the country adopts a strict “zero COVID-19” policy resulting in limited visits of officials from overseas.

His visit comes at the invitation of Mr Xi.

Mr Widodo or Jokowi, as the president is popularly known, has expressed the hope that the visit would strengthen the bilateral ties and cooperation between the two countries.

“China is Indonesia's comprehensive strategic partner. We must fill this partnership with cooperation that is beneficial for our country, and at the same time for the region and the world," said Jokowi.

Meanwhile, Mr Xi said that Mr Widodo is the first head of state the Chinese side has received after the Beijing Winter Olympics.

“This is quite enough to prove how intimate the relationship between the two sides is," said Mr Xi.

In a joint press statement, Indonesia congratulated China in advance on the upcoming 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.

It added that the national congress “would guide China’s march toward achieving its second centenary goal of building a great modern socialist country in all aspects”.

Both presidents agreed to strive for a general direction of building the China-Indonesia community with a shared future and committed to forging exemplary models of major developing countries that seek mutual benefits, common development and South-South cooperation.

The two countries agreed to speed up the formulation of a new Five-Year Action Plan for the Implementation of the China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

They will also cooperate through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and Global Maritime Fulcrum (GMF) and are committed to complete the Jakarta-Bandung High-speed Railway on schedule as a flagship project.

China and Indonesia will accelerate the resumption of people-to-people exchanges, including the return of Indonesian students to China, opening more direct flights, and beefing up cooperation in sectors such as education, tourism, youth and local exchanges.

They will also strengthen cooperation in vaccine and genomic research, development, and production with China agreeing to support Indonesia’s effort to set up a regional vaccine hub, said the statement.

On regional development, both countries have agreed to implement the consensus reached at the China-ASEAN Special Summit to Commemorate the 30th Anniversary of China-ASEAN Dialogue Relations last year.

They will uphold open regionalism and advance China-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace, Security, Prosperity, Sustainable Development and Amity.

According to the joint statement, China also reaffirms its support for ASEAN centrality in the evolving regional architecture and supports Indonesian ASEAN chairmanship in 2023.

Meanwhile, Indonesia stands ready to work with the Chinese side in ensuring peace and stability through dialogue and diplomacy, the statement added.

Several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were also renewed and signed during today’s meeting, especially in areas such as research and development of vaccine and genomics, green development and cyber security capacity building.

Indonesia is currently the rotating president of the Group of 20 (G20) major economies and Jokowi took the opportunity to invite the Chinese leader to attend the G20 leaders’ summit in Bali this November.

Mr Xi, who has not left China since the COVID-19 pandemic, said that China supports Indonesia’s presidency and wishes the summit to be a success.

While in Beijing, Mr Widodo also met Premier Li Keqiang.

According to a statement issued by the Indonesian presidential press bureau, the Indonesian leader said that China is Indonesia’s strategic partner and both countries have succeeded in filling the partnership with mutually beneficial cooperation.

The value of trade between Indonesia and China has exceeded US$100 billion and continues to increase, said Mr Widodo.

“I hope that this cooperation can continue to be improved,” he added.

During the meeting, China expressed a commitment to increase imports of 1 million tons of crude palm oil from Indonesia.

China will also prioritise imports of agricultural products from Indonesia.

The leaders also discussed cooperation in developing the green industrial park in North Kalimantan which is expected to become the world’s largest green industrial area drawing power from hydro and solar energy.

Jokowi will continue his three-day Northeast Asia tour with a visit to Japan on Wednesday.

He is expected to meet Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and the business community in Tokyo before heading to South Korea on the final leg of his tour.

Indonesian President-elect Prabowo to visit China in first official post-polls foreign trip

Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto will visit China next week at the invitation of President Xi Jinping for what will be his first official overseas visit since his election last month, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Friday.

By inviting Prabowo – currently Indonesia’s defense minister – Beijing is trying to gain an edge over Washington and strike first in wooing the future leader of Southeast Asia’s largest economy, analysts in Jakarta said.

During Prabowo’s three-day visit starting Sunday, Xi will hold talks with the Indonesian president-elect on bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest, Lin Jian, China’s foreign ministry spokesman, told a regular daily press conference in Beijing on Friday.

“At the invitation of President Xi Jinping, Indonesia’s President-elect Prabowo Subianto will visit China from March 31 to April 2,” Lin said, according to a transcript posted on the ministry’s website.

“Mr. Prabowo’s visit to China will be his first overseas visit as president-elect. It fully demonstrates the robustness of China-Indonesia ties.”

The Indonesian Defense Ministry spokesman also confirmed Prabowo’s China visit, saying its aim was to strengthen bilateral relations and increase cooperation in the defense sector.

“This visit is part of the two countries’ ongoing efforts to strengthen strategic dialogue and cooperation, which is vital for regional security and stability,” Brig. Gen. Edwin Adrian Sumantha told BenarNews.

ID-Prap-pic-TWO.jpg

Regional political observers see Prabowo’s upcoming visit to China mostly in the context of Sino-U.S. competition for influence in Southeast Asia, and Beijing’s investment of billions of dollars in Indonesia.

During the nearly decade-long presidency of outgoing leader Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, Indonesia and China drew closer, many analysts said.

Al Azhar University Defense Analyst Raden Mokhamad Luthfi cited China’s big projects in Indonesia.

“One example is the Belt and Road Initiative project in the form of the Jakarta-Bandung Fast Train and the nickel downstreaming industry,” Raden told BenarNews.

He was referring to China’s flagship Belt and Road Initiative project, the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train, which began commercial operations in October 2023.

Nickel downstreaming refers to domestic processing of nickel ore, that is, to refine commodities at home to make exports more valuable. Chinese-linked companies dominate the nickel smelter industry in Indonesia.

Another reason for China’s invitation to Prabowo was that Beijing wanted to ensure that under Prabowo, Indonesia does not move closer to the United States and the West.

“I suspect that China wants to ensure that Prabowo continues the foreign policy that Jokowi previously carried out,” he said.

China is invested in the Prabowo presidency because it wants its projects in Indonesia to stay on track, Raden said.

However, he doesn’t approve of China being Prabowo’s first stop as president-elect.

“Prabowo’s visit to China is too soon. It would have been better if he had waited until he was inaugurated first, then visited a foreign country,” Raden said.

“Visits to foreign countries by the newly inaugurated Indonesian president should first be to neighboring ASEAN member countries such as Malaysia, considering that Indonesia’s interests are much greater in ASEAN than in other countries,” Raden said, referring to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

ID-Prab-pic-THREE.JPG

Prabowo has bucked tradition in another way as well with his overseas trip, according to Zulfikar Rahmat, director of the China-Indonesia Center of Economic and Law Studies (Celios).

This is the first time that a president-elect – one who has not been sworn in – has accepted a foreign government’s invitation to visit, Zulfikar told BenarNews. Prabowo is to be inaugurated as president in October.

“There are two reasons for this. The first is, of course, that Prabowo sees China as a partner in the economic sector. We know that in recent years, China has been Indonesia’s number one trading partner,” he said.

“Second, I see that Prabowo wants to continue Jokowi’s legacy, which is [being] close to China.”

Like Jokowi, Prabowo puts Indonesia’s economy front and center, which brings it closer to China, Zulfikar said.

Muradi, a politics and security analyst at University of Padjadjaran in Bandung, said Prabowo had an interest in seeing how China carries out its defense modernization, which is expected to be completed in 2027.

“[That’s] because China devotes almost 12% of GDP to their defense budget. So, China is one of the countries on the continent that has modern ships other than India,” Muradi, who goes by one name, told BenarNews.

“Why did Prabowo go straight to China instead of ASEAN countries first? … Because Southeast Asian nations were not seen as very strategic by Prabowo. Instead, assume China is the current strategic power,” Muradi said.

“Why didn’t Prabowo go to the U.S. first? Because until now, it is not clear who will win the November election – Biden or Trump. … Prabowo didn’t want to go to [meet] Biden, [if] Biden lost. Or to Trump, if it turned out Trump lost,” he said.

Muradi predicted that after China, Prabowo’s next overseas stop would be in Russia, because its election, as it were, has concluded with Vladimir Putin being re-elected.

“Maybe Prabowo will only go to the U.S. in January or February 2025,” Muradi said.

Indonesia's president Widodo to visit China next week, will meet with Xi

indonesia visit china

BEIJING (REUTERS) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo will visit China from July 25-26 (next Monday-Tuesday), a Chinese ministry spokesman said on Thursday (July 21), becoming the first foreign leader in two years to be received individually by Beijing aside from February's Winter Olympics.

Mr Widodo has received an invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping for the trip, Mr Wang Wenbin said at a regular media briefing.

Mr Wang said Mr Widodo would hold meetings with Mr Xi and with Premier Li Keqiang for an exchange of in-depth views.

Indonesia currently holds the Group of 20 presidency and will host this year's summit of G-20 leaders in Bali on Nov 15-16.

"When the Indonesian President visits China, he can communicate face-to-face with the Chinese leadership," Mr Wang said.

Aside from the Winter Olympics, Beijing has not hosted any foreign leaders individually since strict border measures were put in place in 2020 following the outbreak of Covid-19.

Greater convergence of strategic interests between Indonesia and China

Muhammad Habib , Pieter Pandie

indonesia visit china

Editor's note: Muhammad Habib and Pieter Pandie, special commentators for CGTN, are researchers at the Department of International Relations, Center for Strategic and International Studies in Indonesia. The article reflects the authors' opinions and not necessarily the views of CGTN.

This week marked another milestone in Indonesia-China diplomatic relations as China's Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, finished a two-day visit to Indonesia. This visit took place shortly after Indonesia's incumbent Defense Minister and President-elect, Prabowo Subianto, met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. While the sequence may be coincidental, what appears to be deliberate is the message the two countries want to convey: greater strategic convergence. This article examines three areas in which a degree of convergence seems apparent.

The first area is regional stability. Considering the increasing tensions across the Asia-Pacific region, an open communication channel between two significant regional parties, such as Indonesia and China, is a recipe for maintaining bilateral stability.

Through this visit, China re-affirms Indonesia's indispensable role in the regional order while indicating its continuing eagerness to preserve the habit of dialogue among its partners. Likewise, Indonesia views the visit as a chance to express any interest and concerns through the High-Level Dialogue and Cooperation Mechanism. Indonesia values how Wang Yi's visit has still taken place, regardless of other globally pressing issues. Not many partners can afford to exercise such a commitment.

This leads to the second area of greater strategic convergence between Jakarta and Beijing: economic relations. In his meeting with Wang Yi, President Joko Widodo highlighted his desire for greater access to the Chinese market and greater knowledge sharing on Chinese agricultural practices.

The Widodo administration views China as a promising partner in technological advancement after the launch of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train service. More than two million Indonesians have tried the train since its inception, enjoying more options for their homecoming trips during the Eid season. As such, it may not be surprising that the administration raised the request for China to extend the train service to Surabaya and build a transportation system in Indonesia's new capital city.

Although it is not explicitly highlighted, the visit confirms the commitment of both sides to an open economy. Indonesia remains hesitant to participate in any global campaign to completely decouple from China, as policymakers find no pressing rationales to do so. Indonesia would keep its enormous market open to products made in China and its abundant raw materials accessible to more industries in China. In the same vein, Wang Yi's presence assures that Beijing will continue to smoothen trade and investment flows between the two countries.

The last, but most recent area of strategic convergence is regarding the situation in the Middle East, which has seen Iran and Israel go tit-for-tat in missile and drone attacks on each other's military sites. China and Indonesia have pledged their support for the two-state solution and full Palestinian membership into the UN, and said that neither party wishes to see escalation to the point of open conflict in the region.

Notably, President Widodo expressed his "confidence that Beijing would use its influence so that escalation could be prevented." This statement comes against the backdrop of America's receding influence in the Muslim world, the broader Global South and more involvements of China, as seen in China's increasing economic and diplomatic footprints in the region's major players. President Widodo's statement may also be interpreted as Indonesia's dissatisfaction with how the U.S. has handled the situation in the Middle East, with the extent of damage and suffering caused in Gaza, while Israel has seemingly faced little or no repercussions.

All in all, there is no doubt that the trajectory of China-Indonesia relations will remain positive in the future. Beijing does not need to be wary of dramatic changes in Jakarta. The incoming administration has clearly signaled their willingness to maintain China-Indonesia relations. Our energy should be focused on anticipating rising demands of greater responsibility at the global level. The current Middle East crisis will not be the last case that calls for more constructive responses from the two emerging powers. As the climate crisis gets worse and the demand for technological advancement gets stronger, Indonesia and China may need to assist friends in the Pacific Islands, Africa, the Caribbeans, and South America.

This century must not become a century of minilateralism. It has to remain a century of multilateralism anchored in international law and diplomacy. Life is too short for all minds and actions to be channeled into unhealthy suspicions towards each other. Time will show how the challenges of this century will require greater strategic convergence between Indonesia and China and across all countries worldwide.

Indonesian president to visit China

indonesia visit china

At the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, President Joko Widodo of the Republic of Indonesia will visit China from July 25 to 26, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying announced Thursday.

In response to a question on the visit, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told a press briefing Thursday that Widodo is the first foreign head of state to visit China after the Beijing Winter Olympics, and China is also the first stop of Widodo's first trip to East Asia since the pandemic, reflecting that China and Indonesia attach great importance to bilateral relations.

During the visit, Xi will hold talks with Widodo, and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang will meet with Widodo. They will have in-depth exchanges of views on bilateral relations and major regional and international issues, Wang said.

The two countries are major developing countries and representatives of emerging economies with broad common interests and broad space for cooperation, Wang said.

In recent years, under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state, the two sides have confirmed the general direction of building a China-Indonesia community with a shared future, constructed a new pattern of cooperation regarding the four pillars of political, economic, cultural and maritime fields, and interpreted the rich content of the comprehensive strategic partnership, he said.

Through President Widodo's visit, China looks forward to deepening strategic mutual trust and practical cooperation, and setting an example for the win-win cooperation and common development among major developing countries in the new era, Wang said.

China highly appreciates and firmly supports Indonesia's constructive role while Indonesia holds the presidency of the G20 this year, Wang said.

Widodo will have face-to-face talks with Chinese leaders about the G20 Summit and discuss how to meet the current prominent global challenges, thus demonstrating the solidarity and coordination among major developing countries, injecting more positive energy into the post-pandemic development of the world economy, and contributing more to global equity and justice, Wang said.

LABUAN BAJO, Indonesia, April 19 -- Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday co-chaired the Fourth Meeting of the China-Indonesia High-level Dialogue Cooperation Mechanism with Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Indonesia's coordinator for cooperation with China and coordinating minister of maritime affairs and investment, exchanged in-depth views and reached broad consensus on practical cooperation in the next stage.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said that China and Indonesia, both representatives of major developing countries and emerging economies, enjoy profound traditional friendship and close and in-depth cooperation. In the past year, leaders of the two countries held two important meetings, which provided strategic guidance for the development of China-Indonesia relations.

Wang said that China has always regarded Indonesia as a partner with a common purpose for development and a good partner for cooperation, and has always viewed and developed friendly relations with Indonesia from a strategic and long-term perspective.

China is ready to work with Indonesia to advance on the path of modernization with each other's respective characteristics, follow the strategic consensus reached by the two heads of state, make full use of the coordinating role of the high-level dialogue and cooperation mechanism, and jointly build a China-Indonesia community with a shared future of higher level and quality, Wang said.

Luhut congratulated China on the successful holding of the annual sessions of its top legislature and top political advisory body, also known as the "two sessions", and expressed confidence that China will achieve high-quality modernization and make greater achievements in development.

He said that Indonesia has successfully held a general election. The new government will continue its friendly policy towards China, firmly adhere to the one-China principle and remain committed to deepening the constructive cooperation between the two countries, adding that Indonesia-China cooperation will bring more benefits to the people of the two countries and the region and play a positive role in achieving peace, stability and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific.

Wang said that China is willing to deepen the synergy between the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and Indonesia's development strategy in all aspects, ensure that the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway remains a shining example of Belt and Road cooperation, build two more new flagship projects, namely the Regional Comprehensive Economic Corridor and the "Two Countries, Twin Parks," expand cooperation in the three key areas of digital economy, green development and improving people's livelihood, to inject new momentum into high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.

China and Indonesia should jointly oppose unilateralism and protectionism, jointly defend the legitimate development rights of both countries and safeguard the normal international economic and trade order, Wang said.

During the meeting, the two sides fully reviewed the progress and confirmed the direction of their cooperation in various fields, agreed to strengthen the connection between corresponding departments, ensure effective implementation of projects, pushing for greater results in their comprehensive strategic cooperation.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi also attended the meeting.

Indonesia seeks China's support to extend Whoosh to Surabaya

oordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Pandjaitan told his Chinese counterpart during a visit to Labuan Bajo regency, East Nusa Tenggara, that Indonesia’s first high speed railway (HSR), dubbed Whoosh, should be extended to Surabaya.

Luhut met with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday to discuss bilateral cooperation at the Fourth Meeting of the China-Indonesia High-Level Dialogue Cooperation Mechanism (HDCM), an annual event focusing on bilateral trade and investment cooperation.

During the meeting, Luhut pointed to the existing 142-kilometer Whoosh connecting Jakarta and Bandung as one of the exemplary outcomes of cooperation under the China-led Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The US$7.3-billion project started operations in October last year.

He expressed his hope that China will continue giving “priority attention and financial support” to the project through its institutions, namely the China Development Bank (CDB) and China Railway Engineering Cooperation (CREC), as well as by stepping up the technology transfer for the existing project.

“We also propose the formation of a joint task force to accelerate the [HSR extension to Surabaya] project,” Luhut said in a statement.

Plans to extend Whoosh to Surabaya have been in the works since 2023, and President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo again pushed for the completion of a feasibility study during his meeting with Wang at the State Palace in Jakarta on Thursday.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi attacked the United States for earlier blocking United Nations resolutions calling for a cease-fire in Gaza after a meeting with his counterpart in Indonesia.

The Chinese and Indonesian foreign ministers reiterated their countries’ calls for an immediate and lasting cease-fire in Gaza after a meeting in Jakarta on Thursday, condemning the humanitarian costs of Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas.

The U.S., together with Egypt and Qatar, brokered a brief cease-fire earlier in the war that included some swaps of hostages taken by Hamas and other militant groups in return for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, and has sought to bring about a new deal.

But the U.S. vetoed a number of proposed U.N. Security Council cease-fire resolutions because they didn’t tie the calls directly to the release of Israel hostages or condemn Hamas’ attack that prompted the war before allowing a resolution to a pass with an abstention in late March.

The meeting took place on the second day of a six-day tour during which Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will also visit Papua New Guinea and Cambodia.

Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi told reporters that the two countries share the same view about the importance of a cease-fire and of resolving the Palestinian problem through a two-state solution.

Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, has long been a strong supporter of the Palestinians and does not recognize Israel.

“I am sure that China would use its influence to prevent escalation,” Marsudi said, adding that China and Indonesia “would also fully support Palestine’s membership in the U.N.”

Wang blamed the United States for holding up cease-fire resolutions at the U.N.

“The conflict in Gaza has lasted for half a year and caused a rare humanitarian tragedy in the 21st century. The United Nations Security Council responded to the call of the international community and continued to review the resolution draft on the cease-fire in Gaza, but it was repeatedly vetoed by the United States,” Wang told reporters.

American officials have argued that the cease-fire and hostage releases are linked, while Russia, China and many other council members favored unconditional calls for a cease-fire. China and Russia also vetoed one U.S.-backed cease-fire resolution , saying it was not strong enough.

Referring to the resolution that was approved by the Security Council in March, Wang said: “This time, the U.S. did not dare to stand in opposition to international morality and chose to abstain. However, the U.S. claimed that this resolution was not binding,” Wang said. “In the eyes of the United States, international law seems to be a tool that can be used whenever it finds useful and discarded if it does not want to use it.”

The two ministers also discussed their countries’ economic relationship and the South China Sea .

China is Indonesia’s largest trading partner, with the trade volume reaching more than $127 billion. China is also one of Indonesia’s largest foreign investors, with investment flows of more than $7.4 billion in 2023.

Later Thursday, Wang also met Indonesian President Joko Widodo and president-elect Prabowo Subianto , who is currently defense minister.

New Indonesia leader visits China, promises close ties

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

BEIJING (Reuters) -Indonesia's president-elect Prabowo Subianto visited Beijing on Monday on his first foreign trip since his election, and was quoted by Chinese state media as telling President Xi Jinping he aimed to continue the close ties under predecessor Joko Widodo.

Prabowo "fully supports the development of closer Indonesia-China relations and wishes to continue President Joko's policy of friendship with China," China's CCTV quoted Prabowo as saying.

The new Indonesian government will promote the alignment of development strategies between the two countries and push for more results in cooperation in fields such as the economy, trade and poverty alleviation, he said.

Prabowo, now Indonesia's defence minister, also said that he viewed China as a key partner.

"Regarding defence cooperation, I view China as one of the key partners in ensuring regional peace and stability," he said in a statement, adding that he sought to boost defence cooperations with China.

"I also commit to fulfil the needs of Indonesia's military hardware, boost cooperation in the defence industry and establish productive dialogues," he added.

Xi described Prabowo as an "old friend of the Chinese people" and said China views its relations with Indonesia from a strategic and long-term perspective, standing ready to deepen all-round strategic cooperation.

Prabowo, 72, was elected in February but will not be sworn in until October. A long-time rival of the outgoing leader popularly known as Jokowi, he is now widely seen as enjoying his predecessor's strong support, winning his decisive victory with Jokowi's son as his vice presidential running-mate.

"The key to the valuable achievements of China-Indonesia relations lies in adherence to strategic autonomy, mutual trust and mutual assistance," CCTV quoted Xi as saying in the meeting.

Prabowo's decision to visit China ahead of Indonesia's neighbours in the region underlines the close partnership built up in the past decade under Jokowi, when China became Indonesia's top trading partner, supplying natural resources including nickel and coal.

Jokowi's first visit after his inauguration was to China, for an annual summit of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders in 2014. That was followed by six more visits.

China has also ploughed billions into Indonesian infrastructure and industrial projects, including the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway.

It remains to be seen how Prabowo, now Indonesia's defence minister, will navigate issues including the jostling for influence between China and the United States in Southeast Asia.

Prabowo has previously said Indonesia was committed to its policy of non-alignment and would keep good ties with both China and the United States.

China's expansive claims in the South China Sea may present a test for his leadership, although the two countries' overlapping claims there have not become a vociferous dispute as has unfolded in recent months between China and the Philippines.

Indonesia says the southern end of the South China Sea is part of its exclusive economic zone. China says the area is within its own territorial claim, marked by a U-shaped "nine-dash line" rejected by other regional states.

China is willing to continue to deepen maritime cooperation with Indonesia, Xi told Prabowo on Monday.
