Why book Kibale Lodge?

Because luxury lodge life can go hand-in-hand with social impact and community empowerment.

Set the scene

Banana plantations, fields of maize and roadside villages line the road up to Kibale Lodge, which sits at 1,430 metres overlooking hills, lakes and terraces in the Great Lakes region. In this peaceful spot, there’s nothing to hear but cowbells, baa-ing sheep and the breeze.

From the open-plan sitting room, communal dining room, library or terrace, there are views to catch of the Queen Elizabeth plains and Kazinga channel to the south, and the towering Rwenzori Mountains to the west. All Volcanoes lodges are hand-crafted, using local, natural products such as wood and bamboo, while art and travel books, vibrant greens of the elephant grass, and local artwork add to the calm. There’s a similar vibe in the beautifully decorated bandas, and in the spa. Rewilding is taking place; around 200,000 Indigenous seedlings have been planted by lodge botanists to encourage native birds and eliminate invasive species.

The backstory

A vision of eco-luxury across 150 acres, this was uncared-for land a couple of years ago when Volcanoes Safaris’ founder, Praveen Moman, began work on Kibale Lodge. A Ugandan Asian who called the country home until he was 16, who’d grown up visiting Uganda’s wilderness with his father, a nature aficionado, he left with his family under dictator Idi Amin’s 1972 expulsion order for Ugandan Asians. When he returned in the 1990s, childhood memories inspired him to start Volcanoes Safaris and promote the Great Apes of the Albertine Rift.

Kibale Lodges shares the ethos of the group’s other four lodges, employing only Ugandans to run and manage properties, and fusing luxury with social and environmental impact, through Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust (VSPT). Examples include Roots and Shoots, a Jane Goodall Institute program to empower youth in wildlife conservation at local schools, and supporting local artists through Rwenzori Founders.

All Volcanoes lodges are hand-built and use no machinery (apart from sanding) by their team of builders, carpenters, welders, and fundi/artisans, from the papyrus roof to the bedside lamps. Four bandas are open on my visit, and by the end of 2024, there’ll be six deluxe and two standard bandas, each named after a Rwenzori peak.

Striking black-and-cream Congolese kuba cloth bedlinen and ottoman and striking blue kitenge rugs contrast against the otherwise muted, natural colours inside the banda. Cow-dung-and-mud walls curve around the solar-powered indoor-outdoor bathroom, which “reminds you of being little and washing wherever,” lodge manager Tonny Kayanja tells me.

From the private porch of the banda overlooking the crater lake or hillsides, one enters an inviting sitting room with its own fireplace and sculptures including the bronze animals of Isaac Okwir, and Africa-centered pieces by Peter Oloya, a former child soldier in northern Uganda . A rattan door opens into the bedroom where the pattern of the black-and-white Congolese kuba cloth, handwoven from raffia palm leaf strands, on the bedlinen and ottoman creates a bold contrast to the wooden floors and muted walls.

On one side of the spacious dressing room is its centrepiece, a brightly coloured, handwoven kitenge curved wall made of cow dung and stone. The separate bathroom area is enclosed by the brightly coloured, handwoven kitenge. The double sink is open to the views and features amenities from Healing Earth, a natural skincare line. A second door leads to the outdoor bathroom, where you can shower alfresco to the chirp of birdsong under the open skies.

Food and drink

Chefs Loice Acom and Gad Hafashimana are wizards in the Kibale Lodge kitchen. During training programmes, Volcanoes sometimes bring in French chefs to help develop recipes. It’s not about learning Western dishes, but rather, how can they get creative with local ingredients such as matoke (green banana), mango and groundnut sauce.

The repertoire is remarkable, with meat, fish and vegetarian choices, and designed so guests combining lodges won’t be repeat-eating. A stand-out dish is Filinda, traditionally eaten on special occasions; slow-cooked beans with steamed kalo (millet bread) or matoke, served with groundnut sauce and dodo (steamed greens). Acom’s favourite is chicken in white wine sauce on a bed of local greens, Hafashimana loves to prepare a sticky fried pork dish with fresh jackfruit, and both are enjoying experimenting with Indian paneer cheese.

For breakfast, alongside omelettes, porridge, and granola, try the traditional savoury dish katogo of mashed matoke with onions and tomatoes, meat optional. If you’re out for the day, jackfruit wraps and a Ugandan Rolex, a chapati-wrapped omelette, appear in the packed lunches.

Down the steps from the main building is the spa with two double treatment rooms where guests can enjoy a daily massage, included in the rate. The outdoor swimming pool and loungers overlook the surrounding countryside, and the sauna in a traditional dome is ideal for aching legs.

The location

An hour’s drive from the airstrip at Kasese and Fort Portal town, Kibale Lodge is 30 minutes from Kibale National Park (unless you stop for the less elusive roadside baboons), home to around 1,500 chimpanzees (guided treks with UWA – Uganda Wildlife Authority – are the golden ticket). Kibale Lodge is also 45 minutes from the beautiful community-run Bigodi Wetlands, where local guides conduct nature and community experience tours.

At the lodge, guests can hike up to the summit accompanied by lodge staff. This gently sloping 10-minute walk leads to glorious views over the terraced hillsides, with plans for a shaded rest area. You can also hike down to Lake Lugembe, 45 minutes each way, where plans are afoot to rewild the route and offer sports fishing and canoeing.

The service

Service is inspired by the local Batoro community, which practices respect for all. Staff members are warm, welcoming and knowledgeable, from the butlers to the botanists. “We want the culture of our staff to shine,” says Moman. We want them to feel proud of what they’re sharing with you.”

For families

Families are welcome and extra beds can be added, but bear in mind the elevation, rocky terrain and malaria risk. The age restriction for chimpanzee tracking is 12 years (gorillas, 15 years); childcare can be arranged if needed.

Solar panels and backup generators generate hot water. Healing Earth toiletries are wrapped in recycled stone paper, and shower products come in dispensers. Filtered water is provided in glass bottles, and food is locally sourced, some from the garden. Recycling plans are also in progress.

Accessibility for those with mobility impairments

There will be a closer drop-off point to the main building, while the longer pathway will allow for wheelchair access, with two bandas accessible via ramps. At present, no ramp access to the spa and pool due to the incline, but it’s hoped a solution will be found.

Anything left to mention?

Particularly if you’re flying in or out of Kasese, take a tour of Volcanoes-supported Rwenzori Founders, which nurtures Ugandan and regional artists. Join a foundry tour or just visit the gardens, sculpture gallery and café.

How to book

Bandas from US$990 per room per night on an all-inclusive basis. This includes accommodation and meals, all soft and alcoholic drinks (excluding French champagne) including cellar collection wines, cocktails and single-malt whiskeys, laundry service, lodge activities, massage and spa treatments. volcanoessafaris.com

1983 - Smith Brothers Crater Lake National Park Chronology Steve Jonas, 29, of Moscow, Idaho, seasonal maintenance employee for the past 5 years, mysteriously disappears after being seen walking along Annie Creek Canyon. A Park visitor reported to the Annie Spring Entrance Station seeing a car precariously perched on the ledge of the canyon, at the “Ole Van” turnout, with a man of Jonas’s description standing nearby. When a ranger patrol arrives about 15 minutes later, Jonas had disappeared. A massive search was mounted with a helicopter crew, search dog teams, and 25 volunteer searchers, but no trace of Jonas has ever been found. On his way out of the Park, Steve had stopped for gas and had mumbled something about wanting to kill himself, but nobody took it seriously because he had a history of mental illness and depression, ever since returning from the Service.

Corvallis Gazette - 15 Jul 1983 Search for man winding down Searchers have found nothing to indicate 29 year Steven Jonas stayed in the park area. The Moscow Idaho man was last seen Friday near his car on the brink of a 300 ft cliff he car was later recovered. Friends say recently Jonas has been treated fro severe depression and may have been taking medication for the condition.

Corvallis Gazette - 11 Jul 1983 Steven Jonas 29 of Moscow Idaho a seasonal employee who has done janitorial and maintenance work at the park for the past five years. The search began late Friday a visitor spotted him standing near his car about 2:30 pm near Annie Springs Canyon about nine miles south of Crater lake Lodge.

To note Steven Jonas was from Moscow Idaho and went missing at his season job at Crater Lake National Park in Klamath County Oregon

Refreshing the thread...

  • Aug 7, 2021

I wonder if he had wanted to disappear. He could have been trying to plant the idea of suicide and left the car in that position intentionally. Obviously, its more likely that he committed suicide, but without knowing the area I'm just trying to come up with another solution to not finding his body.

Boasting such impressive numbers, the highest diversity and density of primates on the entire continent, Kibale easily claims the title as the primate capital of the world.

Other predators include the leopard, African golden cats, small predators such as mongooses and otter; and servals. The park in its entirety is 766 km2 in size.
