What is Elf: The Musical about?

Based on Will Ferrell's beloved Christmas comedy film, Elf (2003), Elf: The Musical sees the heartwarming and hilarious story adapted into a breathtaking musical. 

The story follows Buddy the Elf (Steven Serlin) on his journey from the North Pole to New York City in search of his real dad (Barry Bloxham) while attempting to win the heart of Jovie (Charlotte Dalton). 

Supersized into a live arena spectacle, the production features a massive stage featuring film backdrops on a huge LED screen, plus a mobile stage that travels the auditorium, giving everyone a close-up view of the action. Be ready for Santa's flying sleigh, an audience snowball fight, an indoor snowstorm, a giant candy cane, aerial cirque stars and even more surprises in an immersive theatre experience for the family!

ELF, the hit Hollywood blockbuster movie has been supersized into a live arena spectacular for this Christmas with a massive stage featuring amazing film backdrops on a huge LED screen plus a mobile stage that travels the auditorium, so everyone gets a close-up view of the action.

The presentation features Santa’s flying sleigh, an audience snowball fight indoor snowstorm, a giant candy cane journey from the North Pole, aerial cirque stars and giant tv screens so you don’t miss any of the spectacles.

The story is hilariously recreated by a large cast of performers into the biggest live Christmas show in the UK. The festive spectacular will feature West End star Steven Serlin stepping into the big floppy shoes of Will Ferrell to play Buddy the Elf. The cast also features ‘Birds Of A Feather’ comedy actor Charlie Quirke as Buddy’s New York pal, Charlotte Hall as Jovie, Buddy’s love interest and Barry Bloxham as Buddy’s long-suffering dad.

This Christmas Spectacular production features a book written by Bob Martin and Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers and Hairspray) and an original score of great songs by Matt Sklar and Chad Beguelin that has delighted audiences on Broadway and the West End.

Elf: The Musical Arena Spectacular arrived at Exeter's Westpoint Arena with some sparkle and singing loud for all to hear. The hit Hollywood blockbuster movie has been transformed into a live arena spectacular for this Christmas with a massive stage featuring film backdrops on a huge LED screen as well as a mobile stage that travels the auditorium, ensuring everyone gets a close-up view of the action.

Put the iconic film out of your mind though. While the show recreates some like-for-like moments, the musical takes different turns, honing in (and out) of different plotlines in the film.

We start in the North Pole where kneeling cast members with short legs explain to the much taller Buddy that he isn't actually an Elf. Santa explains he must go to New York to find his real father and sure enough, he finds him in the Empire State Building at a clinch-point of his career. Buddy's job is to find a way to make his father believe again - while finding a place in his hardened father's heart. And on his journey he ends up at the department store where he meets Jovie.

There's some good old-fashioned panto fun with some audience participation - including in a snowball fight, as well as aerial cirque stars, Santa’s magical flying sleigh and an indoor snowstorm.

Steven Serlin steps back into the big floppy shoes of Will Ferrell as he reprises his acclaimed performance as Buddy the Elf.

The cast also features Birds Of A Feather favourite and comedy actor Charlie Quirke as Buddy’s New York pal, Charlotte Dalton as Buddy’s love interest, Jovie, and Barry Bloxham as Buddy’s dad.

Producer and Director Jon Conway said: “This is the fifth year we have presented this epic version of the Broadway and Hollywood hit. The best shows are always the funniest but it’s still about actors on a stage communicating the story. In Elf we haven’t changed a word of the written script that much but there are a hundred extra laughs… that’s because of the way we have worked the physical comedy business into the performance.

“We’ve even made the props bigger and more extravagant and the effects ever more spectacular, always with a view to making it more contemporary to reach today’s audiences.”

Serlin, who plays the lead role of Buddy, said: “One thing’s for sure, it’s going to be fun. There is nothing like getting a laugh or getting applause in the moment especially on an arena stage. I love being able to leap around being silly, it’s what every actor dreams of really.”

Director Conway added: “Elf is always one of the most popular Christmas films and Buddy The Elf is a truly iconic character. We have made the show even bigger and better with new features to make it a really thrilling experience. Keenly aware of the economic climate at the moment, we are one of the few shows to have reduced prices to ensure an affordable family outing. One of the best sights is the audiences dressing up for the show, especially the dads in Elf Christmas sweaters. This is an unmissable Xmas treat.”

Important notice 

From Monday 11th December – Sunday 7th January our car park will be transformed into a fairground as Winter Wonderland Newcastle will be taking place in this space. There is no parking available on site for this event.

We will be limited to accessible parking only at events between this time. Please arrive as early as possible as these spaces will be allocated on a first come first served basis from 1 hour before the door opening time and cannot be pre booked. You will also need a Blue Badge to access these spaces.

Our car park is business as usual from 6am on Monday 8th January.

Elf The Musical is a must-see holiday musical based on the 2003 hit film starring Will Ferrell!

One Christmas Eve, a young orphan crawls into Santa’s bag of toys and is unknowingly transported to the North Pole. Buddy the Elf, grows up unaware that he is actually a human until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities make him face the truth. With Santa’s blessing, Buddy travels to New York City to discover his true identity and find his birth father. Upon learning that his father is on the naughty list, and that his half-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy becomes determined to win over his family and help New York rediscover its Christmas spirit.

This box-office-record-breaking musical combines vintage comic style and high-energy contemporary music and delivers jolly holiday entertainment for the whole family!

Featured Cast

David A. Bradbury

David A. Bradbury (Buddy) is thrilled to be back on stage at 6th Street Playhouse, where he was most recently seen in Little Shop of Horrors and The Producers . Other notable credits include Zoot Suit at Shakespeare OC and The Secret in the Wings at STAGEStheater. He recently graduated with his B.A. in Drama from UC Irvine, where he appeared in such productions as Chess , The Pajama Game , The Importance of Being Earnest , and Company. David is the Operations Specialist and a Youth/Teen Director for the 6th Street Studio. Welcome all, and to thine own elf be true!

Kaela Mariano

Kaela Mariano (Jovie) is making her stage debut at 6th Street Playhouse. She has been seen at Spreckels as Petra in A Little Night Music and Ermengarde in Hello, Dolly!  She has also been in the ensembles of their productions Tuck Everlasting , The Music Man , and Matilda . Other credits include Guys and Dolls at Sonoma Arts Live!, It’s a Wonderful Life at SRJC and West Side Story . Next, she will be in She Loves Me at 6th Street Playhouse.

Keene Hudson

Keene Hudson (Walter Hobbs) returns to the 6th Street Playhouse stage after playing Jackson Moore in Smart People last season. He also appeared in Hair and Little Shop of Horrors . Other roles include Lincoln in Top Dog , Underdog and Aufidius in Coriolanus . Keene studied Theatre at Princeton University and received an MA in Film from Columbia College, Chicago. He also studied at Beverly Hills Playhouse in San Francisco. Keene lives in Sebastopol, CA with his wife and 10 year old son, and has a stepson and stepdaughter attending Humboldt State.
