11 Top Tourist Attractions In Christchurch, NZ

Written by Michael Law Jun 23, 2023

Author Michael Law and photographer Lana Law visited Christchurch most recently in the fall of 2023.

Christchurch is a city in transition that still retains much of what made it a great place to visit in New Zealand prior to the devastating 2011 earthquake. Home to stunning parks, historic architecture, interesting attractions, and a youthful vibe, this gateway city to the South Island is well worth a stop.

Author Lana Law at the Christchurch Botanical Gardens

During my most recent visit, I saw evidence of how hard the rebuilding process has been for this city. Interesting and innovative projects throughout the city are being built from the ground up in a modern way while other buildings stand damaged and awaiting their fate giving the place a half-finished sort of feel. Several buildings under construction are historical buildings and some of the city's most important attractions, including museums and the Christchurch Cathedral.

Christchurch is a very walkable city. I parked my car at the Botanical Gardens in Hagley Park and was able to stroll through the gardens and right into downtown where most of the key attractions are located, check everything out, and wander back the same way.

One thing to be aware of is that hotel accommodation is tough to come by. Only a few large hotels are operating and their rates tend to be expensive. Because of this, I didn't stay in the city, I was able to base myself at an Airbnb in lovely Govenenor's Bay, and day trip to the city.

Explore the city with my list of the top attractions and best places to visit in Christchurch.

Botanical Gardens

Hagley park (north and south), riverside market, cardboard cathedral, the arts center, new regent street, the international antarctic centre, ride the trams, ride the gondola, take a punt down the avon river, canterbury museum.

A fountain at the Christchurch Botanical Gardens

Home to over 10,000 plants of all shapes, colors, and sizes, the city's incredible Christchurch Botanical Gardens is, without a doubt, my favorite attraction in the city.

Delightful walkways wind their way through the park past the main attractions like the Rose Garden, ornate fountains, and small lakes. The Archery Lawn area of the park is home to massive trees including huge Sequoias, Monterrey Cypress, Cork Oak, and Coast Redwoods. It's here that you'll also find the unique water feature and sculpture called Regret by Sam Mahon, which incorporates an interactive fountain that visitors can activate.

pond at the Christchurch Botanical Gardens

The park is also home to multiple installations of public art. One of the most interesting pieces is found in Kiosk Lake and is titled Diminish and Ascend . This piece nicknamed the Stairway to Heaven , is a set of aluminum stairs that, when viewed from certain points, gives the illusion of ascending into the clouds. Be sure to snap a few photos for your Instagram here, the picture will definitely entertain your followers!

If it's the height of summer and you have young kids with you, a splash pad (called a paddling pool in New Zealand) is adjacent to the gardens.

Address: Rolleston Avenue, Christchurch

Model boats on Lake Victoria in Hagley Park

Located in the heart of the city, Hagley Park is a favorite destination for locals craving a bit of wide open green space. The park is home to a golf course, rugby, cricket, soccer, and hockey fields, a fitness course, and extensive walking trails. It's where the folks of Christchurch come to compete and get some exercise.

The park is huge and is divided into a north section and a south section with the Christchurch Botanical Gardens sandwiched in the middle area. The Avon River winds its way throughout the park and marks the separation of the botanical gardens from the rest of the park. If you'd like to ride in a punt down the river, the tours leave from the 130-year-old Antigua Boat Sheds landing on the park's edge. Here you'll also be able to hire canoes, and kayaks, rent bikes, or have a riverside coffee and snack at the Boat Sheds Cafe.

You'll also find two pretty lakes. On Lake Victoria, model sailboat enthusiasts practice on the weekends. Admission to the park is free as is the parking.

Address: 14 Riccarton Avenue, Christchurch

Riverside Market in Christchurch

One of the city's great rebuilding success stores is the lively area of fresh food, restaurants, and shops known as Riverside Market . Housed in an architecturally stunning building, the market is home to the city's best food stalls, and the aromas of all that great food will have you placing an order in no time flat! Or, if it's a sunny day, snag a prime table on one of the riverside patios.

It's not all about prepared food here, Riverside Market is also the go-to destination in Christchurch for the freshest produce including fruit, vegetables, meats, seafood, and cheeses. A perfect stop if you are renting a home with a kitchen and want to dine in.

Once you are rested and refreshed from all that eating, it's time for a bit of shopping. All manner of small boutiques sell creative and one-of-a-kind items that are perfect for that blank spot on your wall or to find a gift. Riverside Market is easily walkable from the Botanical Gardens.

Address: 96 Oxford Terrace, Christchurch

Interior of the Cardboard Cathedral

The earthquake almost completely flattened Christchurch's main cathedral and even today, nearly thirteen years later, the painstaking job of rebuilding is far from over. However, faith is unbending and where there's a will there's a way. The congregation has been helped by an innovative architect, Shigeru Ban, who created what is affectionately known as the "Cardboard Cathedral."

Entrance to the Cardboard Cathedral

This bright and airy structure is built out of 60-centimeter cardboard tubes, and steel beams, has a polycarbonate roof, and the walls are made from shipping containers. The inside looks and feels a bit like a miniature model made of matchsticks.

According to its builder, it will be able to stand for 50 years to come. It's a quiet and contemplative place that's well worth a visit.

Address: 234 Hereford Street, Christchurch

The Arts Center

Unmissable for its incredible Gothic Revival architecture, the Arts Center of Christchurch is a must-see attraction for culture vultures. This lively spot is housed in the former university buildings and is a delight to explore. It's right across the street from the Botanical Gardens so it's easy to find.

Wander through the main entrance off Rolleston Avenue and grab a coffee and a snack at Bunsen . My preference is to grab a sunny seat by one of the windows with views of the courtyard. Suitably fed, take a wander through the historical buildings where you'll find artists' studios, galleries, and museums.

The Arts Center always has something going on with theater shows, talks, and other events.

Address: 2 Worcester Boulevard, Christchurch

New Regent Street

The funny thing about New Regent Street is that it's actually full of old buildings that have been revived following the earthquake. Pastel-colored buildings are done up in a Spanish Mission style architecture and are home to an eclectic assortment of shops ranging from tattoo parlors right through to galleries and craft stores.

New Regent Street is also home to a couple of great cafes, my favorite was Cafe Stir . The entire area is pedestrian-only and it's usually easy to snag a table. Try to sit on the western side (the side away from the tram tracks) to enjoy the sunniest tables and the best people-watching.

Little blue penguin at the International Antarctic Centre

If your time on the South Island of New Zealand has left you wondering about regions farther south, this is a good place to visit to learn about what lies beyond. Antarctica is only roughly 4,500 kilometers to the south of Christchurch

Many expeditions to this frozen land have left from New Zealand and the International Antarctic Centre does a great job of showcasing what life is like on the icy wastelands where the winds howl and the temperatures drop to unfathomable depths.

A visit here is fun for all ages, highlights include the Storm Dome where you'll experience a blizzard with wind chill temperatures of -18 Celcius, a chance to see penguins, and the full-on experience of the movie Ice Voyage in the 4D theater. One of the center's most popular attractions, the all-terrain ride, was closed during my visit and at the time of publication.

Address: 38 Orchard Road, Christchurch

Christchurch Tramway

After the earthquake, new tram routes were put in place to make traveling around the downtown area easy and enjoyable. Hop on at any one of the 17 stops on the route and be treated to an enjoyable trip around the city. Key sights along the way include Cathedral Square, Rolleston Avenue, High Street, Riverside Market, New Regent Street, and the Botanical Gardens.

The entire ride takes 50 minutes but with the hop-on hop-off tickets you can ride anywhere you want all day long. The trams are restored historical carriages that are painted in bright colors and make incredible photo subjects, try for a shot of a tram trundling by the Gothic architecture of Christchurch Arts Center.

View of Lyttelton Port from the Christchurch Gondola Station

Christchurch goes toe to toe with Auckland as far as beautiful city settings. Unlike Auckland, where you'll need to get out on the harbor to see the city at its finest, in Christchurch, you'll need to get up high via a gondola to fully appreciate the view. A ten-minute ride whisks you from the pancake-flat Canterbury Plains to the top of Mount Cavendish where a spectacular panorama greets you.

From your perch at 1,470 feet (448 meters) to the north, you'll see the city spread out below you and the Pacific Ocean. To the south, the views encompass Lyttelton Harbor and beautiful Goveneror's Bay. To the west, the Southern Alps stretch to the horizon, and if you are visiting between May and September, there's a good chance they will be snow-capped.

Things to do at the summit area include hiking trails and easy walks, two of the most popular are the Cavendish Bluff Lookout and the Pioneer Women's Memorial. Inside the main building, a "Travel through Time" exhibit (included with admission) is an option as is a bite to eat and a coffee at the Red Rock Cafe.

Address: 10 Bridle Path Road, Heathcote Valley, Christchurch

Punting on the Avon River in Christchurch

Although some travelers may consider a punt ride on Christchurch's many canal routes a silly thing to do it's their loss as this is a fun and relaxing experience suited to both couples and families. The punts are propelled by a friendly local who provides a running commentary of the history of the sights you pass along the way.

The punts have two routes, but only the Botanical Gardens route is currently operating in 2023. This route starts at the Antigua Boat Sheds and passes by the gardens along a wide stretch of the Avon River. Punts are shared with other riders, although private charters are available. The route takes 30 minutes to complete.

Discounted combo tickets that include the tram, gondola, and Avon River Punt rides are available.

The Canterbury Museum

Easily located at the Botanical Gardens entrance, The Canterbury Museum is housed in a delightfully old Victorian Gothic building. Even if you don't go inside, it is quite a place to see. And, at the moment, the outside is all you'll be able to see. The museum, one of the top attractions in Christchurch, is currently closed and will be shuttered for the next five years as a massive redevelopment project is undertaken.

The current building will be retained but inside it will be opened up to have a grand atrium, a new cafe, and other new galleries.

In the short term, the museum will be operating a pop-up location showcasing some of the museum's most important items. The location of the pop-up was not available as of the publication date.

Address: 11 Rolleston Avenue, Christchurch

Ōtautahi Christchurch

This vibrant city offers spectacular culture, heritage, and nightlife – along with the world’s most stunning scenery, right on its doorstep.

By rights, Christchurch should top lists of the world’s most livable cities, but it usually flies under the radar in this respect. Which is another point in its favour. Its relaxed vibe and genuine hospitality are part of its charm.

More than a decade after two earthquakes devastated the city, it is being rebuilt and reimagined. Some of the eye-catching blue-stone heritage buildings may have gone, but in their place are new spaces, designed for modern city living. This includes more green spaces, with t he biggest a swath of land twice the size of Central Park in New York.

For most cities, their historical architecture seems at odds with its modern counterparts. Here, the two meld harmoniously together. A fact that is mirrored in the city’s cultural life. If you want art, restaurants, and accommodation (or just an attitude and way of life) that look back or forward in time, or both together, this is where you’ll find it. In short, this a city that often surprises and is always hard to leave.

Christchurch is one of the largest cities in New Zealand and one of its greatest tourist destinations.

No matter what you’re looking for in a vacation spot, you can find it here. It’s an exceedingly diverse city with beautiful natural surroundings, a thriving art scene, and many exciting things to see and do.

Christchurch is also a bit of a thrill seeker’s paradise. The natural beauty of the Southern Alps and the Pacific Ocean lend itself well to adventurous activities.

The recent earthquakes that struck the city centre may have damaged many of the buildings, but they didn’t damage the spirit of the Kiwis, who have rebuilt proudly.

While many travelers may opt to skip Christchurch for some of the more popular South Island destinations such as Queenstown , those that stay here for a few days quickly fall in love with its energetic atmosphere.

You can find a whole range of awesome adventure activities in Christchurch, from jet boating, bungee jumping, skydiving, and more.

However, the city also offers many opportunities to simply relax and enjoy yourself. There are numerous parks and waterfront paths along the Avon River.

You can wander around in its award-winning Christchurch Botanic Gardens or pay your respects at the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial. New Regent Street is downtown has lots of great shops and restaurants.

Or you can enjoy a day with your kids at the International Antarctic Centre.

These are just a few of the things that Christchurch has to offer.

So let’s take a closer look at some of the adventures that await you in this marvellous city.

The best way to get to know a city is to explore it with a local, and at the end of 2019 a new company has started up that offers fantastic tours for visitors that should be the absolute first thing you do when you arrive.

Green Kiwi Tours is a locally owned and operated business by Simon Bowie, an enthusiastic guy from Christchurch.

Having spent many years travelling around New Zealand as a professional tour guide, he has taken his experience of giving tourists the best experience possible and brought it to his hometown.

His new company offers free walking tours (you choose how much you’d like to tip at the end) to all of Christchurch’s main attractions.

You’ll check out the old and new cathedrals, the 185 Chairs Memorial, Bridge of Remembrance, Canterbury Museum, and plenty more hidden spots along the way.

Simon is hilarious, knowledgable and loves his city, so you’re in good hands when exploring Christchurch. He also offers a craft beer tour and private tours.

We personally know Simon from doing a snowboarding tour around New Zealand where he was our guide, so we can vouch for his professionalism and passion.

Tell him the guys from NOMADasaurus sent you when you sign up for his Free Christchurch Walking Tour!

There are many great hiking trails in Christchurch, but none are quite as spectacular as the one you’ll find at Godley Head.

Not only does it do a great job of showcasing New Zealand’s natural beauty, but it also has a lot of history behind it.

It once served as a coastal defense during WW2, which will certainly be of interest to any history buffs out there.

This trail starts at Taylor Mistake Beach near Sumner Beach, which is an excellent attraction in itself.

During your hike, you’re likely to see some wildlife during the hike, including penguins, dolphins, or even whales in the Pacific Ocean.

This is an astounding trail overall and is one of the best things to do in Christchurch.

Believe it or not, the jet boat was actually invented in New Zealand, and what better place to experience it than right here in town!

It’s one of the most exciting things to do in Christchurch and one of the most fun ways to enjoy the beautiful Waimakariri River.

You’ll be riding down the river at breakneck speed while experiencing 360-degree spins and hairpin turns.

You have the option of choosing a 30-minute ride or a sixty-minute ride.

The 30-minute tour offers a ride on the Waimakariri River while the 60-minute tours provide two additional options.

One takes you to the Waimakariri Gorge where you can enjoy gorgeous views of the Southern Alps.

The other takes you on a safari to the upper Waimakariri Gorge to places that can’t be reached in any other way.

It’s part of the culture here and the Christchurch sightseeing experience isn’t complete without having a go on the jet boat!

The best operator for jet boating in Christchurch is Alpine Jet Thrills .

This is one of the most spectacular places to visit in Christchurch city.

The Christchurch Botanic Gardens are over 150 years old and consist of 21 hectares. There are ten gardens in all, many of which contain rare and exotic plant species from all over the world.

Their rose garden in particular features 250 different kinds of roses.

In addition to its vast collection of plants, the Botanic Gardens also provide fantastic bird watching opportunities, especially during the spring.

There’s also a gift shop and a cafe, and better yet, entry to the Botanic Gardens is completely free.

It’s located inside Hagley Park next to the Avon River and is one of the truly beautiful Christchurch tourist attractions and a must-see for nature lovers.

Afterward, head over to the nearby Canterbury Museum or walk to New Regent Street for some food and shopping. Find out about more attractions on the website !

If you really want an adrenaline rush, then this is what you need to do.

Going skydiving is on the bucket list of many adventure seekers, and New Zealand is one of the best places to do it. The country’s natural beauty lends itself well to this activity.

When you go skydiving in Christchurch, you’ll be leaping out of a plane at a height of 12,000 feet.

Don’t worry, no previous experience is required. When you jump, you’ll be tandem diving with an experienced instructor.

Therefore, your safety is completely guaranteed.

You can simply enjoy the rush of falling through the air while enjoying the gorgeous scenery below you.

If you’re always waiting for your next adrenaline fix, this is one of the unmissable Christchurch attractions.

Whether soaring through the treetops on a zipline or tackling the exhilarating downhill tracks on a mountain bike, Christchurch Adventure Park promises an unforgettable escape into the great outdoors.

The Banks Peninsula, a natural wonderland on the eastern coast of New Zealand’s South Island, lies just a short drive from Christchurch city.

This captivating region has so many dramatic landscapes, from the ancient volcanic craters that dot the skyline to the tranquil bays and rugged coastlines.

Rich in Māori and European history, Banks Peninsula offers visitors a blend of cultural heritage and outdoor adventure.

Tragically, Christchurch experienced a devastating earthquake on February 22, 2011 that took the lives of 185 people.

It also injured many others and left thousands of people without homes.

The Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial exists to pay respect to those whose lives were impacted by this awful tragedy.

This is the place to go if you would like to honour their memory.

The memorial contains a wall with the names of everyone who lost their lives in the earthquake. It also acknowledges those who were seriously injured.

Its 185 empty chairs exhibit is one of the most somber things to see in the Canterbury Region.

This exhibit consists of 185 white, empty chairs to symbolize those who died in the quake.

Visit The Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial

This is another one of the most exciting things to do in Christchurch.

Bungee Jumping has a long history in New Zealand. They practically pioneered this activity which makes it the perfect place to try it for yourself.

During your stay in Christchurch, you can go bungee jumping in the nearby town of Hanmer Springs.

From there, you’ll take a 35-metre leap from the historic Ferry Bridge.

For an extra charge, you can also purchase photos of the experience so you can remember this adventure for the rest of your life.

It’s a great way to get your adrenaline pumping if you’re wondering what to do in Christchurch.

The International Antarctic Centre is one of the biggest attractions in Christchurch.

Its main function is to allow people to enjoy the wonders of Antarctica from the comforts of New Zealand.

It’s a great place to bring your kids, and it’s a lot of fun for adults as well.

There are many things to see and do while you’re here. One of these is its indoor Antarctic Storm.

This is a completely safe experience that takes place in an indoor polar room chilled to -5 degrees Celsius.

You can also go on the Hagglund Ride which simulates the rough conditions of riding in a real Hagglund.

You can even hang out with little blue penguins while you’re there!

Yes, you read that right.

Not only can you take a ride in a helicopter while you’re in Christchurch, you can also try your hand at flying one yourself.

This is a really cool thing you can cross off your bucket list and is a unique experience you can only have in Christchurch.

The flight lasts for thirty minutes.

During this time, a trained instructor will guide you through the steps of taking off, flying, and landing the helicopter in the Canterbury Plains.

If this sounds a little too intense for you, there are other tours where you can simply ride along as a passenger and admire the scenery of Canterbury Plains.

As beautiful as New Zealand is from the ground, it’s even more breathtaking from the air.

To explore more of the incredible nature outside of Christchurch, don’t forget to read our New Zealand Travel Guide .

Art lovers are sure to appreciate this. Christchurch is a city that’s well-known for its street art.

Everywhere you go, you’re sure to find old buildings with brilliant murals painted on their sides. Much of this was made after the earthquakes in an attempt to uplift the spirits of its citizens.

In fact, you can find an entire gallery of these on Brockworth Street. This can be found in the Christchurch suburb of Riccarton.

On this street, you’ll find a wide array of murals painted on the sides of brick walls.

The art you’ll find here ranges from humorous to surreal and is a must-see for anyone who loves art.

Art lovers should also check out the Christchurch Art Gallery. It’s right next to the beautiful Hagley Park and Avon River and is full of contemporary art and local events. Between the street art and the Christchurch Art Gallery, you’re spoiled for choice here.

If you’ve ever wanted to explore Middle-Earth for real, this is your chance.

It’s a well-known fact that the Lord of the Rings movies were filmed in the beautiful country of New Zealand.

While you’re in Christchurch, you can visit several of the main locations that were used for the movie.

Some of the key locations you can visit include the settings for the Shire, Edoras, Helms Deep, and the Gardens of Isengard.

You’ll also get to learn more about how these amazing locations were brought to life in the movies.

This is a unique experience that you can only have in New Zealand and is something every Lord of the Rings fan should see for themselves.

The Christchurch Gondola is one of the city’s most popular attractions. In this way, you can admire the city from above in a gondola.

The gondola is 1000 meters long and takes you to the summit of Mount Cavendish.

Along the way, you’ll be greeted with incredible views of Christchurch and the Southern Alps.

Once you reach the summit, you can grab a bite to eat at the Red Rock Cafe or look for souvenirs at Shop at the Top.

The gondola is also a great way to reach some of Christchurch’s best hiking trails.

Or you can simply ride the gondola back down to the city.

As mentioned before, you haven’t truly seen the city until you’ve seen it from above – making this a Christchurch must-see.

This is your opportunity to have an up-close encounter with these amazing creatures.

On this tour , you’ll be taken to the beautiful Akaroa Harbor where you can swim alongside Hector’s dolphins.

This particular dolphin species is one of the smallest in the world, and this is the only place where you can find them.

You can also expect to see other wildlife such as penguins and seals while you’re there.

The dolphins themselves are incredibly friendly and playful.

You’re guaranteed to have a fun, unforgettable experience during your time with them.

On top of this, you’ll also see many other landmarks on your way to Akaroa Harbor such as Governor’s Bay and Lake Ellesmere.

When you’re in Christchurch, you have the opportunity to go rafting down the Rangitata River.

This is an extremely fun experience and is sure to appeal to all the thrill-seekers out there.

The rapids on this river go all the way up to Grade 5, which is excellent for experienced rafters who are looking for a challenge.

For those who want a more tranquil rafting experience, you can take a trip on the Rangitata River’s lower gorge instead.

This part of the river features Grade 2 rapids and is appropriate for families with children.

No matter which one you choose, a riverside barbecue will be waiting for you at the end of your adventure.

This is another way to enjoy Christchurch’s more creative side.

The World Buskers Festival is an annual event that takes place every January during New Zealand’s summer.

This event features hundreds of street performers with acts in many different genres.

It’s the only place where you can see this many street performers in one place, and the range of entertainment on display is quite astounding.

There’s music, comedy, dancing, juggling, vaudeville, and much more.

Not to mention acts that completely transcend description.

The festival is known for its crazy, off the wall performances, and attracts hundreds of thousands of people every year.

It’s definitely unlike any other festival you’ve ever been to.

The Top 15 Things to Do in Christchurch, New Zealand

christchurch tourism activities

Pawel Toczynski / Getty Images

The largest city on New Zealand's South Island and the third-largest in the country, with a population of 400,000, Christchurch offers an interesting mix of art, culture, history, nature, and outdoor activities not far from town. Although it experienced two devastating earthquakes in late 2010 and early 2011 that destroyed many homes and buildings in the central city, it has well and truly brushed itself off and rebuilt. Whether you're just passing through on a longer trip around the South Island or plan to spend a few days in Christchurch and the surrounding Canterbury region, here are the top 15 sights and activities you shouldn't miss.

Pay Your Respects at the Earthquake Memorial

In 2010 and 2011, Christchurch and surrounding areas were hit by two powerful earthquakes, plus a series of major aftershocks in the following months. The first, on Sept. 4, 2010, was more powerful (7.1 on the Richter scale), but the second, on Feb. 22, 2011 (6.3), was more destructive. The Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial was unveiled in 2017 and commemorates the earthquakes and the lives lost. Designed by Slovenian architect Grega Vezjak, the names of the 185 killed are carved into the marble panels of a wall that stretches along the banks of the Avon River in the central city.

Punt on the River Avon

Sergio Piumatti / EyeEm / Getty Images

Flowing from the hills of western Christchurch, the Avon River winds calmly through the central city. A popular activity is to go on a sightseeing punt ride (a flat-bottomed boat propelled by a long pole pushed against the bottom of the river) with a guide dressed in old-fashioned English dress, which you might see in the English city of Cambridge. Alternatively, you can rent a kayak and go for a self-guided paddle. The water quality here isn't great, though, so swimming should be avoided.

Be Intrigued by the Unusual Cardboard Cathedral

Chanachai Panichpattanakij / Getty Images

One of the second Christchurch earthquake casualties was the partial collapse of the city's namesake Anglican cathedral, Christchurch Cathedral, in the center of the city. The  Christchurch Transitional Cathedral  (aka the Cardboard Cathedral) was constructed and opened in 2013, designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. It's an A-frame building constructed largely out of cardboard tubes and decorated with colorful triangular glass windows at the front. It's more robust than it sounds and definitely weatherproof.

Take a Day Trip to the Banks Peninsula

Robin Smith / Getty Images

The bulbous, volcanic Banks Peninsula extends south-east of Christchurch city and makes an ideal day-trip destination for outdoor activities. Hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, and dolphin watching can all be enjoyed here. Dolphin watching via kayak is a charming experience, as you have the chance to see the world's smallest and rarest dolphin, Hector's dolphin, close up without the disturbance of traveling on a large boat. To experience some rare French culture (and food!) in New Zealand, check out the village of Akaroa, which French colonizers settled in 1840. Historians believe that the French settlement of Akaroa prompted Britain to speed up its annexation of New Zealand.

Swim at Sumner Beach

Meg Bowden Cooke / EyeEm / Getty Images

All coastal cities have their go-to beach playgrounds, and Sumner Beach fills this need for Christchurch's residents. About a 20-minute drive southeast of the central city, Sumner has a 1,300-foot stretch of sand, a paved promenade, cliffs, and a rock cave to explore, and is good for swimming as lifesavers patrol it in the summer. Scarborough Beach, east of Sumner, is good for surfing but less suitable for swimming.

Learn About the Frozen Continent at the International Antarctic Centre

As New Zealand is one of the closest countries to Antarctica, New Zealand scientists have long been involved in scientific study and exploration of the frozen continent to the south. Christchurch's International Antarctic Centre has interactive exhibits about the continent that few people experience for themselves. It's also home to around 25 rescued little blue penguins in a habitat that has been designed to resemble the Banks Peninsula.

Go on Safari at Orana Wildlife Park

MollyNZ / Getty Images

While New Zealand is home to some unique native birds and wildlife , to see more exotic species, head to the Orana Wildlife Park . The 200-acre open-range park allows visitors to see animals like lions, rhinos, meerkats, gorillas, monkeys, and giraffes from the back of a safari vehicle (safely caged in!). You can also watch various presentations and feedings. Orana is involved in numerous conservation projects, including breeding programs for endangered exotic species and Department of Conservation (DOC) recovery programs for threatened New Zealand birds.

Ride the Heritage Tram

Laurie Noble / Getty Images

Although trams (streetcars/trolleys) are no longer used as a mainstream way of getting around Christchurch, some historic tracks remain in the central city. The restored heritage trams are an atmospheric way of sightseeing and let you leave the car at your accommodation, so you don't have to worry about parking. The tram runs on a hop-on hop-off circuit, and drivers provide interesting live commentary. The seventeen stops include popular must-see attractions like the museum, botanic gardens, and New Regent Street. A full circuit takes just under an hour. Tickets last all day, and kids ride for free.

Admire the Architecture of New Regent Street

huafires / Getty Images

Central Christchurch's New Regent Street has been called New Zealand's most beautiful street. In a country full of English and Scottish-inspired architecture, the Spanish Mission-style architecture is certainly eye-catching. Built in the 1930s, behind the pastel-hued facades are a range of high-end souvenir shops, jewelers, bars, coffee shops and restaurants, hairdressers, galleries, and other shops. The heritage tram runs through New Regent Street, but otherwise, it is pedestrianized. It's a perfect place to go for an alfresco drink on a summer evening when the days are long at this southern latitude.

Taste Wine in the Waipara Valley

Matteo Colombo / Getty Images

Not to be confused with the Wairarapa wine-producing region of the North Island, the Waipara Valley is home to the majority of Canterbury's vineyards and wineries. It's about an hour's drive north of Christchurch. Red pinot noir is the most common wine produced in the Waipara Valley, with some chardonnay and riesling whites. Drop into cellar doors for some tastings or visit a winery with a full restaurant.

Stroll Through the Christchurch Botanic Gardens

Mark Meredith / Getty Images

Part of the larger Hagley Park in central Christchurch, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens offer a calm, shady, and free place to chill out while sightseeing in the busy city. As well as an abundance of New Zealand flora and glass conservatories, the gardens feature permanent and temporary art installations and sculptures, and the first New Zealand Peace Bell, one of many around the world created by the Japanese World Peace Bell Association. The Avon River runs through part of the gardens.

Birdwatch at Lake Ellesmere

Oliver Strewe / Getty Images

Shallow, brackish, coastal Lake Ellesmere (Te Waihora) is south of Christchurch and west of the Banks Peninsula. It's technically a lagoon as there's a small opening into the Pacific Ocean on its southwestern end. Lake Ellesmere is an important wildlife area, particularly for birds: the wetlands provide a habitat for 133 native New Zealand bird species. Enthusiastic bird watchers should take a pair of binoculars.

Check Out New Zealand Art at the Christchurch Art Gallery

Soshnikov / Getty Images

The distinctive curved steel and glass exterior of the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu houses one of New Zealand's most important public art collections. The permanent and temporary exhibitions tell stories about the history and culture of Christchurch and Aotearoa New Zealand. Entry is free, and the gallery is open late on Wednesdays.

Drive Through the Tunnel to Lyttelton

7Michael / Getty Images

Over (or, rather, through) the hills from central Christchurch is the historic, quirky settlement of Lyttelton, on the side of an extinct volcano overlooking Lyttelton Harbour. The harbor was the landing site for the first four settler ships to Christchurch from England, so Lyttelton is an historically important place. A heritage walk around Lyttelton is a good way to learn about this history, and maps with numbered stops are available from the Lyttelton Information Centre. Visitors also come to enjoy the Saturday markets, cafes, and boutiques, walking tracks around the hills, and to visit the former quarantine station and leper colony of Quail Island in the harbor. Getting to Lyttelton from Christchurch requires traveling through the longest road tunnel in New Zealand, at 1.2 miles long.

See What's Left of Cathedral Square

falun / Getty Images

Christchurch's Cathedral Square used to be the heart of the city, with the grand spired Christchurch Cathedral at its center. First built in 1850, it was a focal point of city life. This changed somewhat with the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, which damaged the imposing cathedral and other heritage buildings at the square. One landmark that remained is the 59-foot metal sculpture "Chalice" by Neil Dawson, constructed in 2001. Since the earthquakes, local government and organizations have worked to revitalize Cathedral Square without the cathedral's presence and its soaring spire. The process of rebuilding the cathedral has started but will take many years. Even though the public space is not as architecturally unified as it once was, it's still highly worth visiting.

New Regent Street, things to do in Christchurch, New Zealand

The 12 best things to do in Christchurch

The top things to do in Christchurch combine natural beauty, top-notch dining and lots of art and culture

Before diving into the best things to do in Christchurch, a short history lesson. This city was once synonymous with gardens, green parks and a meandering easy pace – but that all changed in February 2011, when a magnitude 6.3 earthquake took the lives of nearly 200 people and destroyed over half the buildings in the city centre. The city is still green and beautiful but a steely resilience, resourcefulness and creativity has emerged in those who chose to stay in Christchurch. While there are still empty spaces where buildings used to be, the rebuild is vibrant – just take a look at the restaurant scene  – and there’s a palpable feeling of excitement and adventure as new pockets of creativity continue to pop up.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Top things to do in Christchurch

1.  christchurch adventure park.

Christchurch Adventure Park

What is it? Set on 358 hectares in Christchurch’s Port Hills, this park has magnificent views across the Canterbury Plains to the Southern Alps, plus excellent mountain biking trails and the longest and highest ziplines in the country.

Why go? Zipling is a totally exhilarating way to experience this beautiful corner of the world. Mountain bike fans will love that there’s 50 kilometres of downhill trail to ride. If neither of those are your thing, there’s a gentler chairlift option too.

2.  Quake City

Quake City

What is it? A small but incredibly well-curated museum, encapsulating the impact of New Zealand’s second-worst natural disaster on the city and its inhabitants. Rather than being too solemn or morbid, it’s informative, interactive and hopeful. An essential visit for understanding how the quake has shaped the Christchurch of today.

Why go? To understand the geographical causes and consequences of 22/2/2011, the heroism of those who responded, and to listen to personal – and at times even amusing – accounts of what happened. Objects like the spire of the ruined Christchurch Cathedral and the railway station clock are also part of the exhibition.

3.  Christchurch Gondola

Christchurch Gondola

What is it? An 862-metre cable car ride up the side of Mt Cavendish, which provides spectacular views across Canterbury. There’s also a time tunnel ride at the top which provides a history of the area in an immersive format.

Why go? On a beautiful day there’s no better place to get a 360-degree view of the area. You’ll get a bird’s eye view of the city, the plains, the Alps, Lake Ellesmere and the Pacific Ocean in the distance. For keen walkers, the Bridle Path Walk starts at the foot of the gondola.

4.  Little High Eatery

Little High Eatery

What is it? This huge indoor/outdoor modern marketplace is the best place in Christchurch for a lively casual bite with friends or family.

Why go? To eat from any of the eight local family-run businesses at shared seating. You’ll find everything from bao to Venezuelan barbecue, Caribbean cuisine, Thai noodles and bacon burgers – not to mention great wine, local craft brews and delicious cocktails. Don’t miss the Asian-inspired cocktails at Eightgrains Dumplings if flavours like lychee, ginger, sake, yuzu and passionfruit are your thing.

5.  Godley Head Walk

Godley Head Walk

What is it? A stunning seven-kilometre coastal walk passing surf breaks, historic military buildings, harbours, city views, quirky old holiday homes and – if you visit during the right season – a penguin colony.

Why go? This breathtaking walk along the coast provides spectacular views. You’ll spot the wild surf of Taylor’s Mistake, rugged cliff sides, dramatic mountains, rolling hills, Lyttelton Harbour, Christchurch city, New Brighton Beach and (on a clear day) even the Southern Alps. Expect endless look-at-me-and-this-gorgeous-scenery Instagram opportunities.

6.  Akaroa

Akaroa

What is it? A small harbourside French historic settlement an hour’s drive from Christchurch. Cruises to see penguins, seals and very rare Hector’s dolphins are a major drawcard.

Why go? Akaroa’s serene water views incite instant calm. Sealife-centred boat rides are very popular but there’s also a sensational cooking school, a seriously impressive mosaic garden, the much-loved dairy Barry’s Bay Cheese and a couple of wonderful places to fill your face, including Rona’s and Ma Maison.

7.  Street art

Street art

What is it? Half-destroyed buildings make a post-earthquake city pretty aesthetically grim, so the resilient artists of Christchurch brightened things up with a proliferation of eye-popping street art. You can even follow an interactive guide to hunt for the finest pieces.

Why go? Embarking on a treasure hunt to locate the works of local street artists is a truly entertaining way to spend a couple of hours. There are nearly 200 but even just seeking out a handful is worth it.

8.  Christchurch Botanic Gardens

Christchurch Botanic Gardens

What is it? Aside from being one of the finest collections of exotic and native plants in the country, the Botanic Gardens is a charming place for a stroll. After you’ve soaked up all that floral goodness, walk towards the more sombre Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial.

Why go? The Peacock Fountain dates back to the early 1900s and if you sneak around the back of the original Curator’s House (now a restaurant) you’ll see beehives and a wonderful edible garden. The memorial by the river is an emotional experience; it’s heart-wrenching to see all 185 names of the deceased etched on the beautiful marble wall but it’s incredibly important for understanding and respecting how much this city lost.

9.  New Regent Street

New Regent Street

What is it? A gorgeous pedestrian mall built in the early 1930s in Spanish Mission architectural style.

Why go? Aside from being one of the city’s most photogenic spots, New Regent Street is home to some excellent restaurants and bars. No trip to Christchurch is complete without a visit to Rollicking Gelato on New Regent (just try to resist a selfie with its gorilla-on-park-bench statue). See a play at the Isaac Theatre, have dinner at the superb Grey Robin or Twenty Seven Steps or a cocktail at The Last Word or The Institution. The Caffeine Laboratory serves some of the city’s best coffee.

10.  Riccarton Sunday Market

Riccarton Sunday Market

What is it? The weekend in Christchurch brings several market options, but Riccarton Sunday Market is the largest, with more than 300 stalls selling food, craft, plants, secondhand goods, furniture and bric-à-brac.

Why go? Markets in Christchurch became very important after the quake, when many supermarkets closed and people needed places to regroup with their communities. The Saturday markets like Christchurch and Lyttelton Farmers Market are perfect for picking up delights from local producers, and Riccarton is a fun day out with live entertainment and plenty of ready-to-eat options.

11.  Christchurch Art Gallery

Christchurch Art Gallery

What is it? An expansive, inspiring modern space that has reopened since its closure from the quakes. It’s the largest of Christchurch's galleries and the heart of the city’s thriving arts scene.

Why go? There’s always a fascinating mix of first rate local and international art here. The building itself is pretty damn stunning too, with its dramatic glass façade. If you have time, the arts centre and museum are nearby.

12.  North Canterbury wine region

North Canterbury wine region

What is it? More than 90 vineyards are located less than an hour from the centre of Christchurch. The region is particularly well-known for its pinot noir, chardonnay and riesling.

Why go? It’s a lovely drive with some striking and varied landscape and plenty of cellar doors to investigate. There are some particularly good food options at some of the wineries; Pegasus Bay and Black Estate are extremely well-regarded on this front.
