This strikingly shot concert documentary follows enigmatic Drag City singer-songwriter Bill Callahan on a two-week tour from California to New York. For the past 25 years, under both the Smog moniker and under his own name, Callahan has cultivated a legacy as both a pioneer in the lo-fi movement and one of the country’s finest troubadours. The film is built on impressionistic scenes of Callahan’s life on the road combined with his cryptic musings ("I started playing music when I was 20, and time stopped for me then in a good way”), creating a voyeuristic glimpse into his meticulously constructed universe of disaffection and disorder. It is an austere and beautiful portrait of both the musician and the multifarious American landscape.

Following Callahan on his 2011 tour through California, the Midwest and back to NYC with beautifully shot images, Banks captures his live performances and moments from life on the road that seem to illustrate his lyrics. Callahan is a private person who enigmatically shares some thoughts on film. A concert film might just be the best way to understand him: “I think when I’m performing live, it’s really just the realest me there is.”

Factory 25 announced that it has acquired the world rights to Hanly Banks’s concert film “Apocalypse: A Bill Callahan Tour Film.” The film centers on Drag City singer-songwriter Bill Callahan during a two-week tour from New York to California. 

Callahan has been a pivotal figure in the lo-fi movement over the past twenty years, both under his own name and the moniker Smog. The film takes an impressionistic look at his life on the road during his 2011 tour for his third album under his own name, “Apocalypse,” which was selected by Pitchfork, Uncut, and Mojo as one of the best albums of 2011. The film played in 2012 at the Film Society of Lincoln Center as a part of their “ Sound & Vision ” series.

“Apocalypse: A Bill Callahan Tour Film” will see release at Brooklyn’s reRun Theater on May 2, followed by screenings across the country in the spring. The film will hit VOD and iTunes on April 15.

Capturing life on the road, this documentary proves a low-key profile of prolific musician Bill Callahan: a key figure in the unfortunately-titled “freak folk” scene, which also included Drag City label-mates Joanna Newsom ( Inherent Vice !) and Will “Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy” Oldham ( Old Joy !).
