About Cangas

Introduction.

Picturesque beaches of fine white sand and clear waters make Cangas a popular area for locals and visitors alike. Also known as Cangas de Morrazo, the town sits across the estuary from the city of Vigo and ferries can be taken from Cangas port across the water to Vigo and other places of interest.

There are numerous places for grocery shopping in and around Cangas, whether it be in the large supermarkets or the local independent shops selling fresh produce from the area.

Food & Drink

There are plenty of options for dining out around Cangas. With a large selection of the town’s restaurants located to the back of the port area overlooking the water. Seafood and tapas in traditional Galician styles can be found in abundance in this area. Along the beaches around Cangas small, charming chiringuitos will open up in the summer months with outside seating overlooking the beaches, serving food and drinks during the day and occasionally offering live music in the evenings.

The Cies Islands

The beautiful Cies Islands are visible from Cangas and are a short ferry crossing away from the port. The number of visitors per day is limited as the islands are now protected due to their popularity. The most well-known beach on the Cies Islands is Playa de Rodas, which was once voted the world’s best beach by the Guardian newspaper. As well as stunning stretches of sand, there are numerous hiking trails to follow across the islands and an abundance of wildlife to spot and admire.

If you can tear yourself away from your private pool, you’ll find a number of beaches in the Cangas area to choose from. The beaches of Santa Marta and Limens are joined forming a seemingly endless stretch of sand to enjoy. Further round the coast are the beaches of Barra, Viño and Nerga, each separated by rocky outcrops which are quite fun to scramble over. There are beach bars here in the summer months and water sports to be enjoyed. There are more small, natural beaches along the coast from Cangas and the beach of Rodeira, in Cangas town where you will find restaurants and also a pleasant coastal promenade.

Exceptional customer service

This was our 3rd year using vintage travel. They have always been excellent and this year in particular their customer service went above and beyond for us. Unfortunately we had issues with the location of our villa and a new development site causing a lot of noise. Our rep and UK office stepped in so quickly and were able to offer us two options for resolution that were more than reasonable. Honestly exceptional and would recommend them to anyone. Thanks Vintage will see you next year

We stayed in Crete

We stayed in Crete. The villas were just as described. If anything even nicer. And the whole experience was made even more relaxing and enjoyable by the VT representative John. He could not have done more to make our stay comfortable and special. Nor could the villa owners, who were lovely and so kind.

Date of experience : July 23, 2024

Thank you for your wonderful review, we are so pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay in Crete. We will pass on your kind words to John, many thanks.

Excellent experience

I have booked our summer holiday with this company several times now and have never been let down. The properties always meet or exceed expectations - the villa Mira in Turkey was superb. Always feel well supported in advance, during and after the trip. Highly recommended - we are very satisfied customers.

Date of experience : July 08, 2024

Thank you for your 5 star review and your excellent feedback, we are delighted to hear your comments and appreciate it very much.

What a view

Just returned from our third stay at Casa del Molino in Galicia. We had another lovely 2 weeks in the villa with the best view you could ever want, and a beautiful big pool. The Villa is spacious and well positioned for the beach, restaurants and lots of things to do including the lovely mill walk which runs by the side of the villa. Vintage travel were very efficient as always and I would highly recommend booking with them and staying at Casa del Molino.

Date of experience : July 20, 2024

Thank you for your wonderful feedback, we are so pleased you have enjoyed your stays at Casa del Molino.

Wonderful villa, great views

Wonderful villa, exactly as described online. Vintage Travel have been our go-to operator for 20+ years, and for good reason - their standards are high, and their response if issues arise is personal and quick. El Balcon is beautifully situated, close to other properties but you would never know it as the house and grounds have no sight of them. Instead, there's a 180-degree panoramic view that changes by the minute, and the excitement of amazing birdlife. The property is well-maintained and comfortable.

Date of experience : June 13, 2024

Thank you for this lovely feedback and review, we really appreciate your loyal custom.

Perfectly friendly and profession service.

From the initial enquiry, to booking and all correspondence, Vintage Travel were the most helpful, professional and friendly company I've ever used. Plus such lovely, hand picked properties, we couldn't go wrong. Pech Marty, in South West France, the Villa we chose, was just perfect and reasonably priced. We had the best, most hassle free holiday. Even the property owners were easy to deal with and so very helpful.

Date of experience : June 08, 2024

Thank you for this lovely feedback! We are delighted you enjoyed your stay at Pech Marty and hope we can be of service again soon.

I used Vintage Travel this year…

I used Vintage Travel this year following a brilliant holiday experience in 2022. I went the same resort, Puerto Pollensa in Mallorca, and booked the same apartment. All the arrangements went smoothly including the taxi transfer from the airport. 2 years ago our flight out from Manchester was delayed by 12 hours, but the local Vintage Travel agent Julie made sure the cab was there when we landed in the middle of the night almost! The apartment was equipped to a very high standard and the terrace overlooked the beach. They had put together a comprehensive guide to the area and no detail was left out. That's why I'l probably be boring and go to the same place again next year!

Date of experience : June 22, 2024

We are delighted to hear you had a brilliant time at Pine Walk Apartment in Mallorca, we look forward to welcoming you back again!

Very good communication from the start to departure

Very good communication from the start till the departure. Great house, as describe. Very good services (housekeeping on half rental, gate was broken on arrival and fixed 1 hour later..)no hassle at all. Plenty of infos of the area. Just perfect. Will try again

Date of experience : July 05, 2024

Thank you, this is great to hear. We hope to welcome you back in the near future.

From holiday enquires all the way…

From holiday enquires all the way through to when back home, the service has always been excellent - go out of their way to help - nothing an issue. Feels like the family travel agent we all used to have across the road! Beautiful villas and in country support timely and friendly. Have recommended Vintage to all my friends, which is a rarity

Thank you for your review and wonderful compliments, very much appreciated by us all.

Outstanding villa in beautiful Pezenas location.Every detail thought through and very easy booking process. Would use Vintage Travel again.

Many thanks for your five star review, we look forward to being of service in the future.

Great company

They gave us all the information we needed and it was accurate. Very competent company. We will definitely be using them again.

Thank you, we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Thank you Vintage Travel, truly exceptional

Excellent service from booking to arrival and beyond. Truly exceptional. The villa was perfect and we had one of our best holidays. Thank you Vintage Travel!

Date of experience : June 11, 2024

You are most welcome! Thank you for your review and wonderful feedback. We hope to welcome you back again soon.

Great service from beginning to end

Great company to deal with - we booked a villa in Italy and from the initial enquiry through to completion of our holiday, we have been kept informed with clear and useful information. Whilst we were away we had access to a local rep (if required) who checked in via Whatsapp during the holiday to let us know she was there to help. We would certainly look at using Vintage again. Thank you.

Many thanks for your five star review, we hope to welcome you back again n the future.

The Villa (El Figueral) in Majorca was…

The Villa we rented in Majorca was spotless, the Representative came round on the second day and was very helpful. The pool was larger than the photographs and was cleaned during our stay. Housekeeping came round to clean and change the towels mid week. The villa we rented was also listed elsewhere for approximately £200 more per week. I will use this firm again.

Date of experience : June 28, 2024

Thank you for your review, we look forward to being of assistance in the future and hope you had a wonderful holiday in Majorca.

Wow, wow, wow!

What a treat to find a holiday company who put customer service and quality front and centre. Brilliant service from start to finish, really couldn't find a fault with Vintage Travel. We will definately be using them again. The property we stayed in, Pazo Ceilan in Galicia, was huge and absolutely beautiful - we had gardens, a pool and an orchard! The owner was friendly, hospitable and generous. If you love a more authentic travel experience, and want to get away from the tourist hubbub, then Vintage Travel is for you!

Date of experience : July 01, 2024

What a wonderful review! Thank you so much. We are delighted to hear your feedback and that you enjoyed your holiday to Galicia.

Excellent Service - great properties

This is the third time we have used Vintage Travel and again they provided an excellent service. The Villa Book was full of useful info and the tailored driving directions were invaluable. I can wholeheartedly recommend Vintage and I'm sure we will be using them again next year.

Thank you very much for your excellent review and your loyal custom, both hugely appreciated by us all.

Crete... What it says on the tin

The pictures of our villa really did do it justice, exactly that what we expected. The location was perfect for ourselves, tucked away in a quiet area without been overlooked yet only a 10/15 walk to the village where there is a large supermarket and various great taverna’s. A little bonus was a small amount of provisions for when we arrived which was so much appreciated due to our late arrival. The vintage representative was so helpful and recommended some excellent places and restaurants to go.

Date of experience : June 29, 2024

We hope you had a wonderful stay in Crete. Thank you so much for your five star review.

A very poor experience

The customer service was poor and the villa, which is potentially beautiful and certainly well located, is cheaply equipped and in need of refurbishing. Our check in time was 5pm which is late. We were asked for flight arrival times as they are considered when allocating cleaners. As we arrived the previous day and as we had young children who would need a meal and to go to bed we asked if we could check in at 3 or 4. We were told we could not as the cleaners needed the full time to clean the villa between the departure of the previous guests (at 10am) and our arrival, as the villa is so big. We were not even allowed to use the pool area as it was considered we might need to use the loo and therefore go in the house and get in the way of the cleaners. In fact there is an outside loo so this was not likely to be a real problem. We were told we would be contacted if the cleaners finished early and we could have access early. When we arrived at 1230 to leave the luggage the villa was locked. The welcome pack (including milk) was on the steps in the full sun and there was no sign of any cleaning. The cleaners eventually arrived late afternoon and despite our check in being 5pm at that time they were only cleaning the bedrooms and had not done downstairs or the pool area. They eventually finished at about 630- well after children’s tea and bath time, and well after our appointed check in. The pool was dirty. We had to clean it ourselves before someone arrived to do it. By contrast the day we left they came at 8am meaning we could not use the pool on the last day. Four of the beds are effectively camp beds with a metal base that is smaller than the mattress which means that if you sit on the bed it tips up. The curtains in 3 bedrooms were so poor we had to put towels up to block out the light. The jacuzzi did not work and could not be repaired until after we left. The dishwasher only worked on a 3 hour programme - on any other programme everything came out dirty. The instructions were to use a particular detergent which was not supplied and not available in the local shop. There was a beautiful terrace/ balcony which is the main sitting/dining area. Sadly it was completely unusable during the day as it had no canopies/parasols or ceiling fans. Understandably the downstairs had no air con - we don't complain about that but there were no ceiling fans anywhere. There were two portable plug in fans which in a large villa were totally inadequate. The parasols provided round the pool were completely inadequate for 12 people. This is a villa that has the potential to be superb if it is properly equipped and maintained. It was clearly built and originally furnished to a high standard, but the impression is that as things are replaced that is done cheaply - adults could not have slept on the 4 ‘camp’ beds. There were a lot of other smaller issues - but we were on holiday and did not want to spend time dealing with them. It was a question of just put up with it and enjoy the overall holiday. We were told by the local rep Julie that the cleaners are arranged by the owners and not Vintage Travel. We were also told Vintage travel are not allowed access until 5pm. That seems to rather contradict the email we received saying if the cleaners finished early we would be contacted by Julie so we could go in early. Julie the resort rep was very pleasant and tried to be helpful and went out and bought a replacement welcome pack. The villa is well located for Puerto Pollença and the beach. It has a lovely swimming pool. If we had not had such a bad experience we would very probably have repeated the experience next year however the lack of flexibility in our arrival time - 4pm would not have been unreasonable- and the fact we were told the cleaners needed all day when in fact they clearly did not and as a result did not turn up until late and stayed well after our check in time coupled with the poor standard of the villa means we would not risk a holiday with Vintage travel again.

Brilliant Service & Villa

Great service from beginning to end. Instant phone call upon booking, prompt confirmation invoice & fully comprehensive information pack about our villa. Has to be the best info pack I've ever received! My minor questions were swiftly dealt with, as was a tiny issue at the villa itself. The villa was superb in a great location 200m from the beach, super clean & well equipped with a huge private pool. The resort rep visited us & she was really friendly & helpful offering restaurant recommendations & other local tips. We had such a great holiday. I would definitely book with Vintage again!

Many thanks for your review and brilliant feedback, we are delighted you had a wonderful holiday. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon!

No issues whatsoever

No issues whatsoever. Great property (Villa Kourouni) at a reasonable price, in a sensational location on Crete.. We heard from their local man (John Eley) soon after we arrived and he visited the following day. Left us with the most comprehensive guide to West Crete, all of which he knows well. No time wasted on finding your way around, or an excellent restaurant, just refer to the guide or ask John. He booked a boat rental and restaurant on our behalf. Very reassuring to have such a knowledgeable, local contact. The icing on the Baclava !

Delighted you enjoyed Crete and the recommendations from our local representative John. Brilliant to hear he was the 'icing on the Baclava!' Thank you!

Santiago de Compostela

About santiago de compostela.

Santiago is a great place for shopping, especially the quaint streets of the Old Town where independent, locally run shops sell some fantastic artisanal goods, silverware, jewellery and more. Take a stroll down the little streets that wind between the stone buildings to find little shops tucked away waiting to be discovered.

For those looking for some serious retail therapy, the city has various Shopping Centres where you can find high street fashion brands, designer outlets, shoe shops and more.

The Cathedral

The Santiago Cathedral is a must for visitors to this beautiful, historic city. Built during the 1300s, Gothic and Baroque features have been added over the centuries, all adding to the cathedral's impressive size and design. For a small fee, visitors can climb up to the roof and admire the view over the city.

Take time to explore the little streets around the cathedral and you will find lots of hidden squares around the Casco Historico (The Historic Quarter), like the Plaza de Cervantes, with beautiful statues and intricate fountains. There are also lots of cafes and restaurants where you can sit and enjoy some Spanish tapas and watch the world go by.

The abundance of restaurants in Santiago means there really is something for everyone. Whether you are looking for high end dining, traditional Spanish cuisine, a light snack in a friendly cafe or even some non Spanish dishes, you are sure to find all of the above in Santiago.

If you are looking to find something to buy to cook back at your villa, then a wide range of well-stocked supermarkets and also smaller, locally run grocery stores can be found throughout the city. Fresh fish and meat, locally produced wines and home grown fruit and veg can be found.

Introduction

The spectacular Atlantic coast of The Algarve is blessed by dramatic rocky outcrops, long sandy beaches and one of the longest sunshine records in Europe. Home to wonderful golden sand beaches warmed by over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, the Algarve coastline of southern Portugal stretches from the Spanish border at Vila Real across to Cabo de São Vicente, the most westerly point of continental Europe. The western Algarve is renowned for its sandy cove beaches and many traditional fishing villages while the east, with the region's capital at Faro, has flatter sandy stretches of beach and many pretty islands, accessed by boat, lying just offshore.

Enjoying an ideal climate of mild winters followed by hot and sunny summers, cooled by pleasant sea breezes, the Algarve lends itself perfectly to outdoor living. However, this lovely region has so much more to offer than just wonderful beaches! Probably the most famous of the wide variety of sporting facilities available is golf. World class facilities include the famous Royal Course at Vale do Lobo and four other celebrated courses at Vilamoura. Tennis, horse riding, scuba diving, surfing, water skiing, sailing and fishing are but a few of the other activities on offer.

There is also a variety of walking trails through woodland in the Serra de Monchique, along rugged cliff tops, or amongst the flora and wild grasses of the coastal sand dunes.

Cuisine here varies from the simple and unpretentious in the form of freshly caught sardines at a quayside bar to sophisticated Michelin starred restaurants. There is a huge variety of fresh fish, meat and vegetables to be sampled with sweet dishes using eggs, almonds, sugar and butter appearing on most menus. Likewise, the high standards of the wines are gaining a well deserved reputation with 'vinho verde' perhaps the best known.

There are some fine reds, whites and rosés to be sampled and all at very reasonable prices.

Local Events

Hardly a week goes by without some kind of 'festa' taking place in towns and villages along the Algarve. These vary from highly organised displays of folk dancing and traditional music followed in the evenings by dazzling firework extravaganzas, to more simple traditional gatherings in small communities, all accompanied by sumptuous feasts of food and wine.

getting to the algarve

Travel options.

The Algarve is well served by a wide range of  'no frills', charter and scheduled airlines flying into  Faro  airport. From here all our properties can be reached within an hour's drive. The Algarve is also accessible from  Lisbon  within 2.5 hours and  Seville  within 2 hours.

The variety and choice of flights from UK airports to European destinations is considerable. We do not tie you in to a package holiday with prearranged travel; you are free to choose flights from your closest airport using any charter, scheduled or low cost airline.

We always recommend booking your flights and hire car as soon as you have decided on your holiday accommodation. This will ensure that you will find the lowest fares and the widest choice of flight times.

If you need to place a 'hold' on your chosen property whilst you are booking your flights we are more than happy to do this for you. We can book flights on your behalf if you would like us to, for this service we charge a fee of £30 for each return flight booked.

Villages and towns in The Algarve

vintage travel galicia

With its pretty picture-postcard church square, the well-preserved village of Boliqueime offers visitors a chance to experience a flavour of the real Algarve. Meander narrow streets lined with traditional tiled houses, indulge at one of the excellent local restaurants or simply enjoy the colourful monthly market. Nearby, the fashionable beach resorts of Vilamoura and Albufeira offer fabulous golden beaches and top rate sporting pursuits, while heading north discover a landscape of rolling hills dotted with ancient olive, pine and cork, white washed hamlets and hidden eateries serving flavoursome dishes.

Sitting on the banks of the Rio Arade , the pretty fishing village of Ferragudo exudes charm at every turn. Along narrow cobbled streets local fishermen tend to their nets, while others crowd corner cafés to discuss their daily catch. Bohemian artisan shops, and art galleries mix effortlessly with cafés, bars and several renowned seafood restaurants to make for a delightful atmosphere.

Overlooked by the remains of a 10 th century Moorish castle, Aljezur sits within a fertile valley famed for its sweet potatoes, celebrated in style during the annual sweet potato festival. Within the stunning Southwest Alentejo & Costa Vicentina Natural Park , this unassuming little town has become a mecca for surfers and water sports enthusiasts worldwide, attracted by the excellent conditions along this unspoilt and breath-taking coastal stretch while also offering excellent opportunities for hiking and walking along the extensive costal footpath trail. To the south sits Lagos, rich in maritime history and home to some of the Algarve’s most beautiful beaches while to the east, head to the hills to reach the peak at Monchique, a mountain town famed for its Medronho liquor.

In the heart of the ‘golden triangle’ the small town of Almancil belies its size with a wealth of excellent eateries ranging from traditional side street to Michelin Star serving haute cuisine. Nearby cosmopolitan Quinta do Lago and Vale de Lobo provide a certain ‘wow’ factor, awash with world renowned golf courses, stunning villas, many with avant-guard design and high-end shopping to satisfy even the most demanding of clients. Combined with beautiful golden beaches, easy access to Faro and a short distance to the attractive hilltop town of Loulé, it is easy to see why this is a ‘must be’ location on the Algarve!

Located only a few kilometres from the busier Albufeira, Olhos d’Agua is a smaller, quieter town that assumes a more relaxed ambiance and is home to an increasing number of restaurants serving both traditional and international dishes on the way up to the square. Nearby Falesia beach stretches seamlessly along the coast towards fashionable Vilamoura, home to one of the region’s largest marinas and several of Europe’s more famous golf courses.

This charming village, sitting only 5 kilometres from the stunning sandy beaches at Galé and Salgados is most famed for being the home to ‘ piri piri’, with countless local eateries serving delicious spicy chicken. Close by, Adega do Cantor, offers guided vineyard tours while excellent shopping is assured at Algarve Shopping. For family fun, head a short distance to Zoo Marine, while at nearby Pêra, the fascinating sand sculpture exposition, with annual themes, is well worth a visit.

This small seaside town, popular with the Portuguese, offers excellent long sandy beaches and an array of tempting seafood eateries, serving freshly caught fish and seafood. Low key and conveniently located between charming Tavira and the frontier town of Vila Real do Santo António, Altura is ideally positioned to enjoy the many attractions of this lesser known part of the Algarve. Nearby, visit the Reserva Natural do Sapal de Castro Marim, on the banks of the softly flowing Guadiana and home to countless birdlife, or take a drive across the border to sample some Spanish tapas then return to Altura to enjoy those fabulous beaches.

Sao Bras de Alportel

Gateway to the wilderness of the Serra do Caldeirão and home to a thriving cork industry , the small sleepy market town of São Brás de Alportel epitomises the relaxed Mediterranean way of life. Here, a slower pace of life, in keeping with its rich rural surroundings, is very much in evidence and showcased sensitively at the local museum of traditional costumes and rural life. A well-preserved historic centre provides an ideal backdrop to while away the hours wandering through narrow streets, perhaps stopping at a local patisserie to sample one of the locally baked cakes and sweets. For beach lovers, the Eastern Algarve resorts are but a short drive away.

The popular and picturesque Portuguese resort town of Carvoeiro , nestled into sea cliffs around a sheltered bay, is an ideal spot to explore this stretch of rugged coastline, home to several of the Algarve’s most iconic beaches best viewed by boat trip or cliff top trail. The town itself is busy in peak season but more authentic and family orientated than Albufeira.

Kids will love Zoomarine close by, a popular water theme park with aquarium and dolphin shows as well as 'Slide and Splash' water park. Watersports are available from the town beach: jetskis, pedaloes paddle boards etc and for keen divers, there are dive schools based in the town. The local fishing boats offer excursions during the day to see the coastline and local caves.

A short distance inland, visit the old Moorish capital of Silves, sitting proudly within its red sandstone castle and home to a fascinating archaeological museum. Further still, the high hills of Monchique offer a cooling respite from the Summer heat amongst forests of pine and eucalyptus while providing outstanding views across rolling hills down to the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Located just north of the regional capital Faro, the pretty village of Estoi boasts many attractions, most notably a stunning 19 th Century pink Rococo palace and the Roman ruins of Milreu . The village is a mix of cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and terracotta roofs and has not been touched too much yet by mass tourism. You will still find locals sitting in cafes all day long, gossiping and nothing much happening during the heat of the day. Famed also for its large monthly market and annual equestrian events, Estoi has much on offer and as is commonplace there are several good local restaurants to sample.

Sitting on the banks of the meandering Rio Gilão and looking out across the expansive salt flats of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, the charming town of Tavira oozes old world charm. With a long history dating back to Roman times, there are many a fine mansion and graceful townhouse on display. Cobbled streets, castle ramparts, beautiful gardens and an abundant and growing list of excellent eateries are but a few of the many attractions on offer. The morning market is a must for foodies while a fun ferry trip takes visitors to the impressive ten-kilometre-long island beach, where the clean waters of the Atlantic Ocean lap against dune backed sands. With all this on offer, then it is easy to see why some say that Tavira is the loveliest town on the Algarve.

Armacao de Pera

vintage travel galicia

With fabulous Blue Flag beaches and excellent seafood restaurants, it is easy to see why Armação de Pêra has become a top tourist destination for the Portuguese. Near the remains of the 17 th century fort, local fishermen still beach their boats on the shoreline bringing with them their daily catch, while in the old town narrow cobbled streets retain their old charm with an abundance of restaurants offering visitors a chance to indulge in delicious local dishes. Nearby, Lagoa dos Salgados offers excellent bird watching against a backdrop of sandy dunes along the impressive Praia Grande.
