There is no Portugal Embassy in the Philippines; however, they are represented by another Schengen Country . It’s not its neighbor, Spain, but the Greek Embassy issues visas on their behalf. You will need to have an appointment, though, before going there. Read our instructions below.

Documents Required in Applying for a Schengen Portugal Visa for Tourists

1. Filled Up Visa Application Form

2. Valid Passport – with at least two blank pages that is valid 3 months after your depart in the Schengen Zone

3. Recent Photo – in accordance with the ICAO standards

4. Fingerprints – if you haven’t been registered in a Visa Application Center in the last 59 months, then your fingerprints will be collected

Supporting Documents

1. Travel Insurance – at least EURO 30,000 covering the entire Schengen Area and your entire stay. AXA Schengen is the one I personally recommend.

2. Financial Means

• Bank Certificate or Bank Books
• Bank statements , credit card statements for the last 6 months
• For minors: proof of means of parent or guardian

3. Travel Proof

• Round trip ticket – should be with Passenger Reservation Number, you can get one from us

• Accommodation – Hotel Voucher or Booking

4. Proof of Deep Ties or Return

• An employment contract or SS Contributions (if relevant)
• Titles of Real Estate Properties
• Family Ties (e.g. Marriage Certificate )

• Employed: Certificate of employment or leave of absence

Steps on How to Apply for a Schengen Portugal Visa

STEP 1: Gather all the requirements.

STEP 2: Schedule an appointment through an e-mail to [email protected] with the following format:

STEP 4: The Embassy will contact you once a decision has been made. Then, you can claim your passport and visa.

Visa Fee:  Php 4,800.00 (EURO 80) as of July 2021 For 0-12 years: Free

Processing time:  It is usually 15 days. However, the Embassy may take up to 45 days to process your application and may ask for additional documentation and further verifications.

1. How long can I travel with my Short Stay Visa?

You can stay in Portugal and the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days for a 180 day period.

2. Is an interview mandatory?

It is not necessary. However, you may be called for an interview at the Embassy if they see something wrong with your documents, or they want some clarification with the purpose of your stay.

3. Should I submit a cover letter?

It is not a requirement, but it’s highly recommended. A Cover Letter can help you explain your situation and circumstances to the Visa Officer.

Hello! What is the lead time of Greek Embassy to confirm and reply upon email of request for appointment? I emailed them last July 13 and upto now I haven’t received any reply from them yet.

Try calling them po. For Schengen, its usually 15 days.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A TOURIST OR A VISIT VISA TO PORTUGAL

One of Europe’s oldest countries, Portugal is known for its world-class golf courses, surfing spots, charming coasts, and the homegrown musical genre, the enchanting fado.

We almost forgot to mention—this small country in the south westernmost part of Europe is also known for soccer (Cristiano Ronaldo is their most famous soccer import), pastel de nada, and port wine.

Portugal promises all kinds of adventure one could think of, with its beautiful natural features, historical places, exquisite cuisine, and fascinating culture that has been influenced by different customs and traditions of other cultures.

Whether you have plans of coming to Portugal as a curious tourist or to visit a family or significant someone, you will need a Schengen visa. 

For Philippine Passport Holders, you need a Schengen visa to enter Portugal. Since there is no Portuguese Embassy in the Philippines, the Greek Embassy has been given the authority to issue visas on their behalf . Here are the things you need to know about obtaining a tourist or visit visa to Portugal.

Who is eligible to apply for a Portugal short-term visa?

In order to enter Portugal (and any other countries in the Schengen zone), you first need to secure a Schengen Visa.

The Schengen Visa is, as the name implies, a visa for the Schengen Area, which consists of most of the European Economic Area (26 states in total), plus several other adjacent countries (see the complete list of EU Schengen and non-EU Schengen states here ).

The visa allows visitors to stay in the Schengen Area for as long as 90 days within a 180-day period. This means that within the period of 180 days, the visa holder can enter a Schengen state (Portugal, in this case), stay and then exit, all for 90 days total starting from the date of entry to the date of exit. This 90-day stay may start and end anytime within the dates stipulated in the visa validity period (180 days).

• Your main destination –  Sa Portugal lang kayo pupunta and will not visit any other country.
• You will stay the longest in Portugal. You have plans of visiting other Schengen countries, but Portugal is where you will be staying the longest. Example: You will stay in Portugal for 25 days before making a 5-day side trip to Spain for a week before returning to your country.
• The main purpose of your travel is in Portugal. You have plans of visiting other Schengen countries, but the most essential purpose of your travel is in Portugal. Example: You will attend a 3-week short course in Lisbon, but you are planning to visit France and then Spain on the two weekends that you are free.
• Portugal is your port of entry. You have plans of visiting multiple Schengen countries for the same number of days, but Portugal is your first point of entry.

Important Documents to Prepare

First things first—you need documents to support your visa application! For this, you will need to prepare these documents:

1. A duly accomplished and signed Visa application form .  Download the form here .

2.  Two current biometrical passport photos (35-45 mm width) –  have your passport photo taken. The embassy is very strict on their photo specifications. Fortunately, they have a  page  on their official website dedicated to explaining this. Bring at least two copies or more, just in case. One photo should be glued to the application form. The second photo will be returned to you.

• Taken with nothing covering the face, without sunglasses or contact lenses, or a head covering unless worn for religious or medical reasons.
• The subject should have their mouth closed  (no grinning, frowning or raised eyebrows).  

After which, paste your photo on each of the electronic visa form that you completed online  (1 original and 1 photocopy of the form).

3.   Original Passport and a Photocopy of it  as well as the Bio Page– The embassy requires that your passport is valid for at least another three months on the date the visa application is submitted. It also must have two empty pages for them to stamp your passport. If you have renewed your passport, bring your old one/s with you. These are needed especially if you have previous overseas trips.

As you are only applying for a visa with no absolute assurance it will be approved, you do not need to pay for the flight ticket just yet. You are basically only showing them that a flight itinerary from the Philippines to Portugal exists on your chosen travel date.                                        

• A  cover letter addressed to the Portuguese Embassy Consul. If you are a first-time traveler to Portugal, please submit an informal declaration through a cover letter explaining your willingness to return to the Philippines before the expiration of your visa: What exactly will be an incentive for you to return to the Philippines, and can you submit proofs for these circumstances?
• Your day-to-day itinerary  – be specific in indicating the place you will visit and the tours you will join or take. A good convincing itinerary requires planning and time to create. If you need help how to create one, watch my video:  https://youtu.be/kME1VdZdRiw.

5. Proof of accommodation or Hotel reservations  – you would need to show hotel bookings, but this does not mean that you must pay for your hotel reservations this early. 

If applying for a tourist visa: You will need a cover letter addressed to the Embassy of Greece Manila (authorized to handle visa application on Portugal’s behalf since is no Portuguese Embassy in the Philippines).

In the cover letter, explain your day-to-day itinerary and outline every specific activity you are planning to take—places to go, tours to join, people to meet/visit, etc.

Also, through this cover letter, submit an informal declaration explaining your intention to return to the Philippines before your visa expires .

If applying for a visit visa: You will need proof of relationship with your host, partner, or sponsor—how are you related to the person you are visiting? Proofs in the form of Birth certificates, marriage certificates, written correspondence between you and your sponsor (screenshots of video calls and chats), and any other evidence of your relationship with your sponsor, such as photos together, are acceptable.

Equally important is the invitation letter written by the host or your partner based in Portugal. In this letter, the host or your partner must indicate the exact address where the host resides, as well as the purpose and full duration of your visit to your host’s country.

7.  Proof of vaccination – As most European countries have decided to welcome vaccinated travelers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This means that the following vaccines are accepted in Portugal:

8.  Proof of Funds or Financial Capacity  –  these documents are necessary to prove that you can either support yourself or your sponsor can cover your expenses financially during the whole duration of your travel.

• Bank statements  – must show records of the past six months. A bank statement shows your transactions in your account at a specific period. It will show debits (withdrawals, payments, taxes, service fees) and credits (deposits, interest earned.) Bank Statements can also be seen online especially if you have a registered account. There is no signature for the manager or a bank officer.
• Bank Certificate  – it is  a confirmation by the branch manager  or a bank officer that you have an existing account in their bank. It shows the account number, the type, and other details such as the opening date of your account, your account balance as of the date of request, and your average daily balance. 

Important (for non-sponsored):   Means of Subsistence for Portugal

The European Commission states that foreign nationals who wish to enter the territory of Portugal need to attest owning 40€/day  when  applying for a Portugal Visa  to  the Portugal Embassy or Consulate .

• If applying as a Tourist or as a Visitor with a Sponsor  – this means that your host and/or sponsor (family, friend, partner, or fiancé) pledges to take full responsibility to cover all the expenses that you will incur during the whole duration of your travel.

If you maintain a bank account for a long time, better maintain it . Kahit na may sponsor ka, of course, plus points pa din sa visa application mo if idadagdag mo din bank statements mo, payslips from our employer, and other proof na financially capable ka din and most importantly, it proves deep rootedness as well.

Sponsorship Letter which should state the fact that he/ she is inviting you to come   over, your relationship with each other, and that he/ she is willing to sponsor you during your trip. Of course, it needs to have documentary proof. 

Original Affidavit of Support , legalized by the Portuguese municipality (through Notarization) where the sponsor is registered and authenticated by the Philippine Embassy in Portugal

The sponsor’s copies of: passport including the biodata page and travel history   (passport stamps) and ID Card or Resident ID card

Recent proof of income of the sponsor   (3 last months’ salary slips, etc.)

Proof of relationship with the sponsor   (pictures together, Birth or Marriage certificate, and screenshot of chat conversations)

9.  Proof of Civil Status  – Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Death Certificate of the spouse, etc. These documents must be issued on security paper (SECPA) by the Philippine Statistics Authority, see   http://www.psaserbilis.com.ph .  

Note:  The birth certificate does not need to be authenticated by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs.

10.  Evidence of your rootedness in the Philippines  – Evidence of deep-rootedness a.k.a. strong family and social ties to your home country, is  one of the most critical requirements when applying for a Schengen Visa . It is what the Consul will look for in your visa application. So how do you prove that you are firmly established in the Philippines and that you will go back to your home country?

• Employment or Work contract and bank account statements or payslips showing the transfer of your last six-monthly salaries 
• Certificate of Employment which should include the employer’s full name, complete address, telephone number with area code, details regarding the position, income, and employment duration
• Approved letter of approved leave signed by your employer (Leave of Absence letter)
• Optional: Signed No Objection Certificate which states that your employer has no objection for you to travel to Portugal and that they have approved your leave request
• Most recent Income Tax Return 2316 (ITR) 
• Optional Supporting Documents: › Government Mandated Contributions – SSS, Pag-ibig, Philhealth Contributions › If with existing loan – SSS Loan or Pag-ibig Salary loan
• DTI Business Name Registration Certificate
• Barangay Business Clearance
• Mayor’s Business Permit from your Municipality where the business address has been registered
• Business activity of your company for the last 6 months – invoices and bank transactions
• Most recent Income Tax Return 2316 (ITR)
• Pension statement for the last 6 months
• Retirement Certification
• For Solo parents: › A copy of your birth certificate- PSA Authenticated › A copy of your child/children’s birth certificate- PSA Authenticated › Solo parent ID › Barangay Certification as Solo parent › Notarized Affidavit of Solo Parent with Undertaking › Money remittances to support your dependents

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Apply for a Schengen Visa to Portugal

Since there’s no Embassy of Portugal in the Philippines, you may apply through the Greek Embassy , which is authorized to process Portugal Schengen visas.

STEP 1: Fill out the visa application form and complete all the necessary requirements . Gather all your documents (double-check to be sure everything is complete and properly filled out) and put them in a brown envelope. Write your complete name and contact number in bold letters on the upper left side of the envelope.

STEP 2: Request an appointment by sending an email to the Greek Embassy at [email protected] . Follow the format below:

• Preferred Date: (DD MMMM YYYY)
• Name of Applicant: (Last Name, First Name)
• Passport No.:
• Contact Tel.:
• Type of Visa: Short-term Schengen Visa
• Main Country of Destination: Portugal
• Expected Date of Departure: (DD MMMM YYYY)

STEP 3: Wait for the embassy’s reply and note down the approved appointment schedule. If your preferred date is not available, the embassy will select the closest possible slot.

STEP 4: Once your appointment has been confirmed, submit your requirements at the Greek Embassy. Make sure you arrive on time, with all your documents in tow. Your fingerprints will be taken when you submit your application; these will remain valid for 5 years. You will be charged a fee for your application (Php4,400) .

Normally, there is no need for interviews especially if you wrote a really good and detailed cover letter (so you have to make sure every essential piece of information is stated in your cover letter). However, you may be asked to come for an interview if they see something in your application that needs clarification.

STEP 5: Wait for the result and collect your passport.  You will be notified when your passport is ready for collection from the visa center where you applied.

Visa processing typically takes 15 days; sometimes, it can be shorter than that. There were also times when it can take as long as one month or more, especially in cases where they ask for more documentation and verification. Put this in mind when lodging your application; to be safe, apply for the visa one month or more before your intended travel date. Plan accordingly.

In 2019, Portuguese embassies across the world received and processed 297,236 Schengen visa applications. 60,321 were rejected. There was no information about the number of applications received on behalf of Portugal by Greece.

Applying for a Portugal Schengen Visa from the Philippines 

If you are planning on going to Portugal, you will need to apply for a visa. This applies to Filipino citizens and non-Filipino citizens who are living in the Philippines legally.

There is no Portuguese Embassy in the Philippines, but you can still apply from there. Greece has been given authority to issue visas on Portugal’s behalf, so you will apply at the Embassy of Greece in Manila.

The embassy takes 15 days to process applications, so you should apply at least 15 days before your trip. You may apply up to 3 months ahead, so please apply as soon as you can to allow enough time for your application to be processed.

Types of Schengen visas offered at the Embassy of Greece in Manila

There are 3 types of visa you may apply for:

• Schengen visa – for tourism, business , visiting family/friends for a maximum of 90 days
• Airport Transit visa (A) – if you are catching a connecting flight in Manila and not leaving the international zone of the airport
• National visa (D) – for study, employment or family reasons etc., for over 90 days

The visa you must apply for will depend on why you are going to Portugal and how long you are going for.

Then, click on “Lodging of Visa Application,” scroll down and you will find the link for the application form:

You can then save the form to your computer, print it and complete it.

Step 2: Make an appointment

You can also make an appointment on your own by following the steps below:

Step 3: Prepare your documents

Before you start this step, take a look at the embassy’s website to find out what documents are required for the type of visa you are applying for.

You should also prepare photocopies as well as providing the original documents, so don’t forget to do that too!

Documents include:

• Visa application form – completed and signed
• Passport  – must be valid for at least three months after the date of departure from Portugal, at least two blank pages and issued within the last 10 years ago
• A recent photograph – check the complete list of photograph specifications
• Proof of financial means – bank certification, bank books, personal bank/credit card statements etc., for the past six months
• Proof of travel – round-trip airline reservation with reservation number and travel itinerary
• Proof of will to return – employment contract or social security contributions (if relevant); Real estate property – title-deed (if relevant); Proof of family ties in the Philippines (e.g. marriage certificate)
• If employed – certificate of employment, certificate of leave absence
• If self-employed – Department of Trade Industry (DTI)/Securities Exchange Commission SEC registration of business, income tax return/business financial statement
• If student – proof of enrolment, certificate of leave absence if travelling during school year
• If traveling with spouse and/or children – Marriage contract & birth certificates of children (documents to be certified by the National Statistics Office (NSO))
• For non-Filipino applicants who have valid residence status in the Philippines – Alien Certificate Registration (ACR) & re -entry permit
• Minors – Consent of parents, passport of parents or legal guardian & birth certificate of the minor, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) clearance
• Proof of purpose of travel – proof of accommodation: hotel reservation , detailed day-to-day itinerary of the planned trip, Proof of sponsorship , invitation letter from host), official invitation letter from a firm, host organisation, educational establishment or an authority to attend meetings, conferences or events
• Proof of travel medical insurance that covers emergency medical care, hospitalization and repatriation (in case of death included). The minimum coverage should be for €30,000

If you’re planning to obtain your flight reservation for visa without paying for the ticket, all you have to do is follow the 3 simple steps below:

• Visit the Visa Reservation website to choose the right package
•  Submit the travel details and make the payment online
• Receive flight itinerary in email

Step 4: Attend your appointment

On the day of your appointment:

• Arrive early – if you are late or miss your appointment, you will have to reschedule
• Check that you have completed and signed your application – this needs to be done before you hand over your application
• Remember ALL your supporting documents – if you do not submit a complete application, it may be rejected

The consular office will review your application, take your fingerprints and photograph, unless you have done this within 5 years, and take the visa fee.

When they review your application, the officer may ask you questions if he/she wishes to clarify any of the information you have given. If this happens, don’t panic, just answer truthfully.

Typical questions include:

• What do you know about Portugal?
• Are you going to work in Portugal?
• Are you meeting anyone in the Schengen Area?
• What do you do in the Philippines?

Visa fees are paid in Philippine Pesos and will not be refunded. You will receive a receipt as proof of payment.

Step 5: Receive your visa

When the embassy has reached a decision, you may pick your passport up from their office.

The decision will be either:

• Approved – your visa will be inside your passport. If you notice any errors with the details on the visa, you must notify the embassy immediately
• Rejected – this would have been for a specific reason and you can appeal the decision

Common rejection reasons include:

• No proof of financial means – you must prove that you can afford your trip, so you should provide bank or credit card statements etc
• Passport does not have 2 free pages – your passport must have 2 free pages, so the visa can be attached. If not, you should get a new one before applying for a visa
• No proof of accommodation – you must provide documents to show where you will be staying in the Schengen Area
• Previous criminal activity – if you have been involved in criminal activity in the past, it could affect your chance to travel abroad, especially when applying for a visa. The best thing to do is to discuss this with the embassy

A Schengen visa is required when entering Portugal. It offers a short stay of 90 days in a 180-day period. There are different kinds of Schengen visas, and it is important to note which visa you need to prepare the necessary requirements. Read on to know more on how to apply for a Portugal Schengen visa for Filipinos.

Who Can Apply for a Portugal Schengen Visa?

Any Philippine passport holder can apply for a Portugal Schengen visa, whether for leisure, education, work, or if you want to reside in Portugal permanently. However, you’ll need a different type of Schengen visa for any of these purposes.

Basically, you’ll be needing a Schengen visa if you plan to enter any countries in the Schengen Area. They issue single entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry visas depending on various purposes and other factors.

Requirements for a Portugal Schengen Visa

• Accomplished and signed Visa application form. Download the form here .
• Two (2) passport-size photos not older than 6 months. See specifications below: Should be two identical photos; 35 mm x 45 mm, Colored (black and white is not allowed) and with bright-colored background, Neutral facial expression, Eyes directly looking at the camera, Avoid clothes that match the background-color
• A valid Philippine Passport with two blank pages
• Copies of your previous visas with validity of at least 3 months beyond the return date.
• Copy of return-ticket reservation
• Schengen travel insurance with a minimum of 30,000 € coverage within the entire Schengen Area and Portugal
• A cover letter which declares the purpose of visit and itinerary in Portugal
• A booked flight itinerary with dates and flight numbers that show entry and exit from Portugal
• Hotel booking reservation during your entire stay in Portugal
• Proof of civil status. See the list of documents you can submit below: Marriage Certificate, Birth Certificate of Child/ren, Death Certificate of Spouse, Ration card
• Means of Subsistence (Proof of Financial Capacity) See list of documents you can submit below: Personal bank statement (at least the last 3 months), Credit card, Cash, Traveller’s cheques, Payslips, Proof of Employment, Supporting document to attest sponsor’s readiness, Proof of Prepaid accommodation, Proof of Prepaid transport

Note: specifically for a Portugal Schengen Visa, a foreign national should attest to owning 40 €/ day when applying for this visa. Each time a foreign national enters Portugal, he/she must be able to provide a 75 €.

Note: Those who can provide proof of accommodation and food covered during their stay in Portugal might be released from paying the above amount.

• Fingerprint (to be collected upon lodging a visa application)

Additional Requirements

For those who are employed:

• Contract of Employment
• Personal Bank Statement (within the last 6 months)
• No Objection Letter (a letter from the employer which states that you have contractual obligations in your home country to return to and that you have a good financial position to afford the trip)
• Income Tax Return (ITR)

For those who are self-employed:

• A copy of your business license
• Company bank statement (within the last 6 months)

For students:

• Proof of Enrolment
• No Objection Letter (Letter of Approval which can be written by a dean/department head/adviser that state that the person must return to the home country to finish a degree)

For tourists:

• An invitation letter from family or friends in Portugal (complete with contact details and address); if applicable
• Personal bank statement (within the last 6 months)
• Copies of your passport

For business purposes:

• An invitation letter from the Portuguese company you’ll be visiting (complete with address, contact details, your visit dates, and coverage of expenses)
• A certificate from your employer which shows that you’re allowed to do business travel
• Proof of business trade relations (if applicable)
• Business bank statement (within the last 6 months)
• Original certified copy of the Memorandum and Article of Association (registered with joint-stock companies), Trade License, and Proprietorship and Partnership documents

For medical purposes:

• Local medical report
• Medical Attestation from hospital or doctor in Portugal with details of the date of appointment and medical situation
• Medical fees payment receipt

For Filipino children who are below 18 years old:

• Personal appearance of parents during the visa application
• Original PSA Birth Certificate of child/ren on Security Paper

For child/ren traveling to Portugal without their parents:

• Declaration of consent by legal guardian/s
• Passport of the legal guardian (original and photocopy of the data page)
• Proof of legal custody
• Death certificate of parent (if applicable)
• Travel Permit issued by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)

Where to Apply for a Portugal Schengen Visa in the Philippines?

Since there’s no Embassy of Portugal in the Philippines, you may apply through the Greek Embassy, which is authorized to process Portugal Schengen visas.

Steps in Applying for a Portugal Schengen Visa

• Fill out the visa application form and complete all the necessary requirements.
• Send an email to the Greek Embassy at [email protected]. Follow the format below: Preferred Date (Day Month Year) Applicant’s Name (Last Name, First Name) Passport Number Contact Number Visa Type (Schengen Short-term or National Long-term) Main Country of Destination Departure Date (Day Month Year)
• Wait for the embassy to confirm your appointment; if your preferred date is not available, the embassy will select the closest possible slot.
• Once your appointment has been confirmed, submit your requirements at the Greek Embassy and pay the necessary visa fee.
• For adults: Php 4,560 (as of April 2021)
• For minors: Php 2,200
• For children 0-12 years old: FREE

It takes about 15 days to decide on a visa application, but it can take up to 30 to 60 calendar days in some cases. Plan your trip accordingly.

Here are some tips and reminders to help you before, during, and after your visa application!

• Your passport should be valid for at least 3 months before your date of departure.
• We advise that you do not purchase a ticket before you get your visa if it’s not required.
• If you are traveling with a group, kindly set an appointment on a single email.
• The visa fee is non-refundable.
• Ensure that you have sufficient money in your bank account, which shows that you can fund your travel to Portugal.
• Your itinerary must be complete with details, including your place of accommodation and their contact details.
• If your visa application is refused, you may appeal. The consular authority will notify you of the reason for the refusal, and the form will also detail how you can appeal the decision.
• Underaged children should be accompanied by their parent/s or guardians.
• Submit your application not more than 6 months before your trip.
• For children 18 and below, parents must present their valid ID (passport or driver’s license)
• You will also need a Portugal Schengen Visa if you plan to visit other countries in the Schengen Area with Portugal as an entry point.
• Insurance is needed for your travel to Portugal.
• An interview might be needed but is not mandatory. Prepare ahead.
• A visa application does not equate to having an approved visa. This depends on many factors, so make sure to submit the necessary documents and additional requirements, if any.

Traveling During COVID-19 Pandemic

As of April 30, 2021, passengers are not allowed to enter Portugal, except for citizens of EU Member States, third-country nationals with long-term permits, essential workers from third-world countries such as healthcare workers, health researchers, care professionals, transit passengers, or persons in need of international protection.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Contact the embassy of Portugal at 202-350-5400 for the most current visa information. 

Portugal is a party to the Schengen Agreement and part of the European Union.

Traveling Through Europe: If you are planning to visit or travel through European countries, you should be familiar with the requirements of the Schengen Agreement. 

• U.S. citizens may enter Portugal for up to 90 days for tourism or business without a visa.
• Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the period of stay.  If you plan on transiting a Schengen country, review our U.S. Travelers in Europe page .   
• You will need sufficient proof of funds and a return plane ticket.

If you are not staying in a hotel or a similar tourist accommodation, you are required to register your presence in Portugal with the Portuguese Immigration Service (SEF) within three working days of entering Portugal. You must download a declaration of entry form (declaracão de entrada) from SEF's website and personally submit it to the nearest SEF office within three business days of entry. Failure to comply with these requirements will result in an administrative offense punishable with a fine from €60 to €160.

Under Portuguese Immigration law, foreign minors under 18 years of age entering or exiting Portugal must possess an authorization letter of parental consent to travel, if travelling with adults other than their parent(s) or legal guardian. The document must be signed and dated, with the signature(s) certified by a notary. The letter of parental consent to travel must include the dates and reason for travel and the details about the adult responsible for the child. More information here .

Safety and Security

Credible information indicates terrorist groups continue plotting possible near-term attacks in Europe. All European countries, including Portugal, remain potentially vulnerable to attacks from transnational terrorist organizations. U.S. citizens are reminded to remain vigilant with regard to their personal security.

Crime:  Crimes of opportunity, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, particularly at popular tourist sites, restaurants, and on public transportation, are common. Pickpockets take advantage of crowds getting on and off all forms of public transportation, such as the popular Tram 28, using the jostling of the crowd as a distraction. Avoid standing near the doors on public transportation, as thieves will often strike just as the train/bus doors open and then dash onto the platform and disappear into the crowd.

• Safeguard your passport and identity documents when traveling throughout Portugal. Foreigners who arrive in Portugal without a valid passport will not be permitted to enter and will be returned to their point of origin.
• Be aware of your surroundings and take personal security measures to stay safe. Thefts of backpacks, electronics and luggage occur regularly. Do not leave valuables in rental cars, especially those with stickers identifying the vehicle as a rental car. Tourists are frequent victims of petty crime/car break-ins.
• Avoid using automatic teller machines (ATMs) in isolated or poorly lit areas. Use the buddy system and indoor bank ATMs when possible. Leave extra cash, credit cards, and personal documents at home or in a hotel safe.
• Keep doors and windows of private rentals locked at all times, taking extra care if easily accessed from the street or other places.
• Illicit drug transactions increase at night, and travelers are often approached by drug dealers in the downtown area of Lisbon, especially near the bars and restaurants. Some travelers have reported incidents in which criminals used drugs to assault or rob them. Use caution when accepting open drinks at bars or clubs, and do not leave drinks unattended.
• Always use a taxi from the queue or kiosk. Do not go with someone who walks up to you and offers a ride. If you have called a ride sharing service such as Uber, confirm that the car information in the App matches the vehicle you are entering.
• Tourists should not leave personal items or valuables unattended while at the beach.
• Reports of thefts from rental homes and online rental apartments have increased.  Secure belongings and lock windows while away or sleeping.

Demonstrations occur in Portugal. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.

• Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.
• Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
• Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

Victims of Crime: Local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes. • U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault should seek medical attention if needed and are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance.

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the Embassy for assistance. Additionally, Portugal has an “SOS” immigrant line with English-speaking operators who are ready to help you in case of emergency. You may contact them at +351 808 257 257 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is generally regulated and rules regarding best practices and safety inspections are regularly enforced. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage, and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance . 

Natural Disasters: In the event of a natural disaster or other widespread emergency, travelers can monitor the Portuguese Civil Protection Authority’s website at Prociv.pt for the latest information. All U.S. citizens living or traveling in Portugal should also monitor local news reports, follow directions from local officials, and take appropriate action needed.  Additionally, information about areas in Portugal impacted by any events can be found at: http://www.prociv.pt/en-us/SITUACAOOPERACIONAL/Pages/ocorrenciassignificativas.aspx.

We recommend all Americans enroll in the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)  to receive security messages, alerts, and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. 

• Filming and photographing the police or military and certain buildings in Portugal is illegal and could lead to arrest or detention.
• Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol could land you in jail.
• Possession and/or use of narcotics and illegal drugs can result in fines, administrative penalties, mandatory drug treatment, criminal punishment, or prison, depending on type, quantity and usage. 
• Penalties for trafficking illegal drugs are severe. Offenders can expect long jail sentences.
• Pepper spray is illegal and will be confiscated. Persons carrying it are subject to fines or prison.
• Possession of unlicensed metal detectors is strictly forbidden, and persons caught with them are subject to fines.
• Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities prior to practicing or operating a business.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. Your U.S. passport will not help you avoid arrest or prosecution.

• Driving : You can drive with your U.S.-issued driver’s license for up to six months. Please note that many highways require a toll for use. Highway tolls in Portugal can be confusing, please visit  https://www.portugaltolls.com/en  for more information.
• Public transportation : Public transportation, in general, has specially reserved seats for individuals with disabilities, but some vehicles may not be equipped to load and secure wheelchairs mechanically.
• Trains : The State Railway Operator, Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses (also known as CP – Combóios de Portugal ), has a free service called “integrated mobility service” (SIM), mainly aimed at reduced mobility customers. English-speaking customer service representatives can be reached by phone at + 351 808 100 746 (to request SIM Service) or (+351) 707 210 746 (reduced mobility passengers can request information about various concerns, 24 hours a day). SIM staff provides train and station accessibility, assistance with boarding/exiting or during the train ride, and assistance with trip planning. Some train stations are equipped with elevators. • Subway (Metro) : Thirty-one of Lisbon Metro’s 52 stations offer full accessibility to people with disabilities. Elevators and moving walkways at main stations provide access from the platform to street level, as well as payment machines adapted for passengers with disabilities and/or visual impairment. Passengers with visual disabilities can travel with their guide dogs as long as their service animals are leashed and muzzled. Check  Lisbon Metro’s website  for more information. Porto’s new metro system provides system-wide accessibility for passengers  with a network of elevators, ramps, and spaces for wheelchairs onboard metro cars. • Airports : All Portuguese airports provide wheelchairs and bathrooms to accommodate persons with disabilities.
• Parking : Designated parking with a wheelchair symbol is available in most supermarkets and commercial centers. The National Help Line for the Disabled (Linha Nacional de Apoio à Deficiência) can be reached by phone at +351 21 795-9545 (10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday). Assistance is only available in Portuguese.

For emergency services in Portugal, dial 112.  Ambulance services are widely available, but training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards. 

The U.S. government does not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas.  Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

• Good medical care is available, but facilities may be limited outside urban areas. Public hospitals offer services at costs lower than private hospitals.
• Payment is expected upon admission at private hospitals.
• Call the national emergency response for an ambulance at 112 for life-threatening emergencies.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage overseas. We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation.

If traveling with prescription medication, check with the  Government of Portugal to ensure the medication is legal in Portugal. Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription. Portuguese law prohibits the mailing of prescription medicines from the United States to Portugal. Any prescription medications mailed to Portugal will be impounded by the Portuguese customs office.

You should bring a sufficient supply of medication with you to cover your anticipated stay in Portugal, along with a copy of your physician's prescription. Portuguese pharmacies generally carry equivalent medications to those found in the United States; however, they may be sold under a different brand name, may not be available in the same dosage, or may require a prescription from a local doctor.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:  While Portugal has significantly expanded its motorway network with well-constructed roads that decreased the total number of accidents and fatalities, its road-accident fatality rate is still high. Use caution when driving, as aggressive driving habits and high speeds pose special hazards. Use appropriate care and caution while on the roadways, practice safe driving habits, and adhere to the applicable speed limits.

Traffic Laws:  It is against the law to speed, drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or use a mobile phone while driving. Fines for traffic offenses are substantial.

• Seatbelts are mandatory for drivers and all passengers. Small children must be in a child safety seat in the rear seat with seatbelts fastened.
• Portuguese law requires you to leave your vehicle where it is and immediately notify the police when involved in a traffic accident. The national emergency phone number 112.
• Police in Portugal have the authority to fine on-the-spot and most of their vehicles have portable payment machines to facilitate immediate payment.
• You may drive with a valid U.S. driver's license for up to six months. For international driving permits, please contact AAA or the National Auto Club.

Public Transportation:  Taxis and prominent ride-sharing services such as Uber are a reliable means of transportation. Refer to the crime section of this page to alert yourself to other threats related to taxis and ride-sharing services. Bus service is also reliable.

In the Azores, driving can be challenging due to narrow cobblestone streets, blind curves, blind corners, and livestock on country roads. Public buses are inexpensive. Bus services begin at 7 a.m. and generally operate until 8 p.m., depending on the destination.

How To Apply for Schengen Visa: An Ultimate Guide for Philippine Passport Holders

Out of 175,703 Schengen visa applications in 2018 from the Philippines, 14,449 (8.2%) were rejected . France may have received the highest number of applications in the world at more than 4 million, but it also ranks as one with the highest rejections at a rate of 15.7%.

Based on the data above, the probability of your application being approved is 91.4%. It’s now your understanding of the application process that will make or break your chances of getting a visa.

In this article, I’ll show you a Do-It-Yourself guide to getting a Schengen visa focusing on tourism as a purpose of the trip; discuss the different documents needed to support your application; walk you through the different stages of the application process, and provide you tips and warnings based on my personal experience. Your most frequently asked questions are also answered.

Schengen visa is a short stay visa allowing its holder to travel in the Schengen area.

The Schengen area covers 26 countries without border controls between them. These countries are:

• Czech Republic
• Liechtenstein
• Netherlands
• Switzerland

Short stay means transit through or an intended stay in the above countries for a duration of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period.

For purposes of this article, I will provide information on how to get a Schengen visa from the top 3 countries that received the highest number of applications, namely, France, Germany, and Italy . I will also discuss the process in the Netherlands where I applied twice and was granted a 1-year multiple entry visa on my recent application.

What Are the Schengen Visa Requirements?

Listed below are the elements of a visa application in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 810/2009 (Visa Code) . These documents and requirements are common to all regardless of which Schengen country you lodge your application.

In France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands, you can fill out the form online, print the completely filled-out form and physically submit it to the third-party service provider of the Consulate of the country you intend to visit.

Passport which

• must be valid for at least 3 months from the date on which you leave the Schengen area
• must have at least 2 blank pages

It must meet the specifications of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), that is,

• 45mm by 35 mm
• must not have been taken more than 6 months

Biometric identifiers shall consist of your photograph and your 10 fingerprints taken flat and collected digitally.

Your biometrics data shall be collected at the time you submit your application at the Consulate of the country you intend to visit. In the case of France, Germany and the Netherlands, it will be collected by VFS Global and in the case of Italy, it will be collected by the VIA Centre – both are third party service providers.

5. Supporting documents

Under Annex III of the Commission Implementing Decision of 3.9.2014 , below are the harmonized list of supporting documents that you need to present when submitting your application.

Note that this is a harmonized list agreed by the local Schengen cooperation in the Philippines (it means these are the same requirements throughout Schengen countries with consular offices in the Philippines).

• Bank certification, bank books
• Personal bank statements, credit card statements or balance covering the last six months
• For minors: Proof of economic means of parents or legal guardian (cf. the above)
• Copy of the roundtrip airline reservation with Passenger Registration Number (or reservation number) and travel itinerary
• Copy of employment contract or social security contributions (if relevant)
• Copy of real estate property – title-deed (if relevant)
• Proof of family ties in the Philippines (e.g. marriage certificate )
• If employed: Certificate of employment , Certificate of leave absence
• If self-employed: Department of Trade Industry (DTI) / Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) registration of the business , Income Tax Return, Business Financial Statement
• If a student: Proof of enrolment, Certificate of leave absence if traveling during the school year
• Marriage contract certified by the National Statistics Office (NSO), Birth certificates of children certified by the National Statistics Office (NSO)
• Copy of Alien Certificate Registration (ACR) 3, Re-entry permit
• Affidavit of support & consent of parents (especially of the non-traveling parent) or legal guardian
• Copy of passport of parents or legal guardian, Birth certificate of the minor certified by the National Statistics Office (NSO), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) clearance
• Proof of accommodation: Hotel confirmation or hotel voucher
• Detailed day-to-day itinerary of the planned trip

Family or friends visit

• Proof of sponsorship
• Letter of guarantee, invitation letter or hotel reservation
• Proof of relationship (birth certificate, marriage certificate)
• A photocopy of the biodata page of the passport and/or travel history of the sponsor in case of non-formalized relationship (boyfriend/girlfriend)

Note that a checklist enumerating the above requirements will be provided to you by France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. What you’ll need to do is to arrange the documents and submit them in the order prescribed in their checklist.

The insurance should be valid throughout the Schengen area, and for the duration of your stay. The minimum coverage shall be EUR 30,000.

The visa fee shall be paid during the submission of your application in the amount as follows

• Twelve years old and above – EUR 60
• Children from 6 years old to below 12 years old – EUR 35
• Children below 6 years old – free

In addition to the visa fee, an additional service fee shall be charged to you by external service providers facilitating your application. In the case of France, Germany, and the Netherlands, VFS Global charges a service fee of Php 901 while for Italy, the service fee is Php 1,350 per applicant (visa application lodgment & biometric service, inclusive of return courier & all applicable taxes)

UPDATED VISA POLICY In May 2018, the European Commission adopted a proposal on the revision of the Regulation (EC) No 810/2009 (Visa Code). Changes to the Visa Code will be discussed throughout the article. Increased fees for visa applications : Effective 2 February 2020, from €60 per application, visa fee will now be €80, and from €35, it will now be €40 . Children aged 0 to 6 remain exempt from the visa fees.

How To Apply for a Schengen Visa in the Philippines: A Step-by-Step Guide

Given there are 26 countries in the Schengen area, the first thing to do is to decide which country you should lodge your application. Here are the rules:

a. If your travel destination is only one Schengen country (e.g., only France), your application must be lodged in the Consulate of that country.

b. If you intend to travel to more than one Schengen country , you must lodge your application in the country of your main destination.

The main destination means a country where you will stay the longest.

Example: You will travel to the Netherlands for 5 days to attend a friend’s wedding. You also decide to explore the region and wants to travel to Belgium for 3 days, in France for 4 days and Germany for another 3 days. You should lodge your application in the Consulate of the Netherlands because you are staying in the country the longest.

c. If your main destination can not be determined , you should apply in the country where you will first arrive (or cross).

Example: You booked a round trip ticket from Manila to Amsterdam and plans to travel in the Netherlands, Belgium, and France for 5 equal days each. You may lodge your application in the Consulate of the Netherlands as it is the country where you’ll arrive first.

2. Start the application process at the applicable Consulate

Basically, there are two stages of visa application regardless of where you lodge your application.

The first stage is when you successfully lodge your application at the third party service provider of the Consulate of the country you are going to. Two things you need to ensure:

• You book an appointment
• You submit all required documents stated in the checklist (see “What are the Schengen visa requirements” above)

If you meet all the requirements, you applications is considered admitted. Once admitted, your documents will be forwarded to the Consulate for examination.

You enter the second stage when you pass the scrutiny of the consulate . To ensure success in this stage, make sure:

• Your travel documents are authentic (not false or counterfeit)
• Your purpose of stay is justified (e.g. tourism and not illegal immigration)
• You have sufficient means to fund your travel
• Don’t give the examiner doubts as to the authenticity, veracity, and reliability of your supporting documents as well as to your intention to leave the Schengen area before the expiry of the visa applied for.

Now that you have a general idea of the application process, let’s now proceed to the country-specific Schengen visa guides.

a. Access the website France – Visas , the official visa website for France.

b. Click on the ‘Start your visa application”, you will be directed to create an account.

c. Once an account is created, fill-out the online form. It is composed of 5 sections, namely:

• Your travel plans
• Your personal information
• Your previous visas
• Your contacts

d. Once complete, print the online application form and affix your signature.

(Note that your visa application form will be automatically filled in with the information provided)

e. Schedule an appointment at theVFS Global Manila website. Here’s how to schedule an appointment at the VFS Global page:

• If it is your first time using VFS, you will be asked to create an account by clicking the “New User” button. Otherwise, you will be asked to log-in
• Click on the “Schedule Appointment”, choose which centre you will submit your application (either Makati or Cebu), click “continue”
• Click “Add applicant” and fill out the details requested in the form and click “continue”
• On the next page, you will be asked to choose a date and time where you can submit your application. Once a date and time is chosen, click “confirm”
• Your Appointment Letter will then be emailed to you. You need to print the letter and bring it with you on appointment day so you will be allowed access to the VFS office

f. On the day of your appointment, bring your appointment letter, signed application form together with the receipt of the application and all supporting documents to the VFS Office.

The checklist of requirements/supporting documents will be given to you during the filling-out of the online application form as the list depends on your response.

Here’s what to expect at the VFS Global Office :

• You will be required to present your appointment letter to allow access to the Centre
• You need to take a token/ticket and be seated in the waiting area You will then be called to the submission counter where your application will be scrutinized by a VFS Global agent. The agent will verify if your documents correspond to the checklist of documents provided by the French consular authority
• If there are missing documents, you have the option to withdraw your application (you can then complete your application and return to VFS on another day. If you opt to continue to submit an incomplete application, you are requested to sign a document that indicates the incompleteness of your application, specifying those lacking)
• Your biometrics information will be taken
• Finally, you will be issued a receipt for the fees and service charges paid as an acknowledgment of your application

g. Track the status of your application here . Just key in your “Reference Number” and last name.

h. Collect your passport at the visa centre or wait for courier delivery. If you choose for your passport to be delivered via courier, a service fee of Php 330 will be collected.

Additional Information/Instruction:

a. You must attend your appointment in person and bring all the required documents, a copy of each document including the passport and its ID pages

b. If your accommodation in France is provided by a host, here are the rules:

• Your host will need to provide Attestation d’ accueil (accommodation certificate) which can be obtained at your host’s local town

a. Access the website VIDEX , the visa application portal of Germany. The site allows you to complete your visa application online.

b. Once you are on the page, fill-out the online form composed of 5 sections, namely:

• Personal details
• Contact data
• Travel data
• Assumption costs

Note : If you are not sure of what information to input, just click on the “launch assistant” icon on the right side of the page and it will guide you with the required input.

c. Once complete, print the online application form and affix your signature.

(Note that your visa application form will be automatically filled in with the information provided).

d. Schedule an appointment at the VFS Global website . You can schedule an appointment here .

e. Submit your signed application form together with all your supporting documents at the VFS Centre. Here is a checklist of requirements for the German Embassy.

Important Reminder: The procedure for booking an appointment at the VFS office; what to do and what to bring on your appointment date; what to expect while inside the office; how to track your application; and how to collect your visa are the same as when you are applying for France so just check the process discussed above.

b. An additional document called “Declaration according to § 54 Aufenthalts” , fully completed and signed by your own hand needs to be submitted as well. This document is included in the checklist

c. If someone is sponsoring your trip to Germany, your host will need to send you the “Declaration of Formal Obligation” which you need to submit at the Consular Section of the German Embassy. Further information on the Declaration of Formal Obligation is found here .

a. Access the website Ministry of Foreign Affairs Consular Services . This is the portal where you can apply for several consular services including applying for a Schengen visa and completing the online application form.

b. Click on the “Schengen Visa” and choose “Short Stay Visa (less than 90 days).

c. On the next page, click on “Start Visa Application”.

d. Fill-out the online form composed of 7 sections, namely:

• Application
• Destination

Note : the questions are straightforward and can be readily be answered. If you do not understand the question, just click the question mark (?) next to the field to know what information is being asked.

e. Once complete, print the online application form and affix your signature.

f. Schedule an appointment at the VFS Global website . You can schedule an appointment here .

g. Submit your signed application form together with all your supporting documents at the VFS Centre. Here is a checklist of requirements for the Dutch Embassy.

Important Reminder:  The procedure for booking an appointment at the VFS office; what to do and what to bring on your appointment date; what to expect while inside the office; how to track your application; and how to collect your visa are the same as when you are applying for France so just check the process discussed above.

Note that if the purpose of your trip is to visit friends or family, there is a form that needs to be filled out by your host and must be signed in the presence of an authorized municipal officer. Here is the link to the form .

In the case of a non-formalized relationship (boyfriend/girlfriend), the latter’s photocopy of the biodata page of the passport and/or travel history needs to be submitted as well. Both of these requirements are indicated in the checklist.

d. On the next page, fill out the online application form for short term visa. It is composed of 10 sections, namely:

f. Submit your completed visa application form and all required supporting documents at the VIA Centre at the address below:

VIA Centre accepts visa applications from Monday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM and Friday 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM.

Note that you can go directly to the VIA Centre to submit your application even without an appointment (walk-in). Setting up an appointment is optional.

Here is a checklist of requirements for the Italian Embassy that you need to bring.

g. At the VIA Centre, your biometrics will be collected.

h. Pay the visa fee and collect the receipts.

i. Wait for the result and claim your passport and visa.

a. Per instruction in the VIA website, you need to bring the following:

• Original copies and photocopies of all required documents
• Your original old and most recently issued passport
• Photocopies of the first page and last page of both the old passport and most recently issued passport
• Photocopies of previous visas and immigration stamps from countries previously visited

b. Your application must be arranged in the following order upon the time of submission:

• If invited by friends/relatives: a. Invitation letter, b. Copy of proof of identity, c. Proof of relationship
• Or if staying in a hotel: a. Hotel Booking, b. Copy of Passport, visas and immigration stamps
• Proof of occupation
• Proof of economic means
• Travel health insurance
• NSO documentation
• Flight booking

Tips and Warnings

There’s no guarantee that your visa will be granted. Also, plans and travel dates do change.

Instead, get the required reservation ticket. You can buy reservation tickets at travel agencies. I bought mine from a travel agency and it cost me Php 1,000 for a round trip ticket.

You may book a confirmed flight provided that you can cancel the bookings for free later on.

Again, you are not sure if your visa will be granted and by experience, plans change often. For booking accommodations that can be canceled, I usually choose Booking.com. They offer free cancellations.

If you are traveling to multiple cities, you need to provide all hotel bookings for all the places you are visiting. You also need to ensure all the days of your itinerary are covered with accommodation. I noted that this is what the agent at the VFS Centre is checking. Again, just book accommodation that you can cancel for free.

The harmonized list of supporting documents only requires proof of outward and return tickets. It does not require proof of transfers . I did not provide such document when I applied for a Dutch Schengen visa and I had no problem.

In your actual trip, you don’t have to follow the itinerary you submitted. No one is going to check if you decided to ride a gondola in Venice instead of taking a cruise along the canals of Amsterdam.

In my application, I only applied for a three-week itinerary and only indicated 4 Schengen countries to visit with the Netherlands as the country of arrival. In my actual trip, I ended up traveling to 12 Schengen countries for 89 days with Greece as the first country of arrival. I did not encounter any problems doing this.

Insufficient insurance is a ground for rejection of your application. I bought insurance from Pacific Cross and Chubb and had no issues.

It’s easier to fill out the form if you have these documents readily available.

I made the mistake of not paying attention to the address of VFS Global and went to a different address instead. This caused me to miss my appointment. If you miss your appointment, you can just book again. Booking an appointment in VFS is free.

However, the fees are expensive (photocopy service – Php 5; photograph service – Php 150) so be sure to have everything photocopied before going.

What documents are required for a Portugal Schengen Visa Application?

When applying for a short-term Portuguese Visa at the Portugal consulate or embassy in your residential country, you will have to provide certain documents that are mandatory with your Portuguese visa application.

Following are the documents mandatory for applying for a Portugal Schengen Visa:

You will need a Portuguese visa application form. Finish filling out the visa application form with all the necessary required information. Take a printout of it and sign it at the end

Two passport photos will be required. The photos should be the same as each other and should follow the photograph requirements that are required for the Portuguese Schengen visa application

A valid passport with at least two blank pages. The passport shouldn’t be older than 10 years. Passport should also have a validity of three months, at least beyond the date of your departure from Portugal and the overall Schengen territory

Do Citizens Of the Philippines Need a Visa To Travel To Portugal?

If you are a Filipino citizen or live in the Philippines, you must apply for a Portuguese visa to visit Portugal.

You will also need to apply for a Portuguese visa to visit other Schengen countries but will stay the longest in Portugal or enter the Schengen area through Portugal.

The commonest visa to apply for as a Filipino is the Schengen visa, otherwise known as the Type C visa. This short-term visa permits you to stay in Portugal and any other country in the Schengen area for 90 days.

You can also apply for other Portuguese visas, depending on your purpose for visiting Portugal. These visas are typically more expensive and take longer to process than the short-stay visa.

Before applying for any Portuguese visa, you must meet all eligibility and financial requirements.

Types Of Portugal Visas Available For Citizens Of the Philippines

As a Filipino, there are many visa types that you are eligible to apply for. The visa you need for your trip depends on why you are visiting Portugal.

The Schengen Visa

This is also called the Type C, short stay or tourist visa. With the visa, you can stay in Portugal for 90 days. You can as well visit other countries in the Schengen area.

The Schengen visa serves many purposes. It serves as a permit for you to tour Portugal. You can also attend business, religious and work-related meetings and conferences with it.

It is also the visa you apply for if you intend to visit friends and family during holidays. This visa also serves as a permit if you are going to Portugal for health reasons.

If your reason for visiting Portugal falls within the above reasons, you must apply for a Schengen visa. It is usually the quickest visa Portugal processes and does not require you to show as much funds as you would when applying for other Portugal visas.

You must note that you cannot work while on a short-stay visa. Doing so will lead to your removal and reduce your chances of re-entry when needed.

To get the visa, you must prove you have a place to stay and intend to return to the Philippines when your visa expires.

What Supporting Documents Are Required for a Portugal Schengen Visa Application?

When applying for the Schengen visa from the Philippines, you must provide some documents that prove your financial and eligibility standing.

Below are the Portugal visa requirements from the Philippines:

Application Form for Schengen Visa

You are required to submit an application form for a Schengen visa. You can get this form by visiting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for Portugal. You have to download the form, complete it and attach it to your application package.

Application forms are filled on an individual basis. If you are travelling with a child under 18, you can sign on their behalf if they are your child or legal ward. Note that an unsigned application form will result in a visa denial.

Philippine International Passport

Your Philippine passport doubles as a means of identification and proof of nationality. The passport you will present upon application must be valid for up to 6 months after the visa you are applying for expires. Again, there must be at least 2 blank pages where the Consulate will attach your Schengen visa.

Health Insurance Policy

If you are applying for a Schengen visa, you must have a health insurance policy. This policy must comply with the EU health insurance standards and be valid for use within the Schengen area. Note that your insurance certificate must show it covers a minimum of €30,000.

If you are travelling with your family, note that each family member must present a separate health insurance policy certificate.

Proof of Funds

One document that must not be missing in your application is evidence that you have enough money to cater to your trip to and from Portugal. You must also prove you have enough to cover your daily living expenses in Portugal.

To prove this, you must present a bank statement showing you have enough money for your trip. Note that the Portuguese government did not specify any amount you must show. But it is safer to have at least €45 to €75 daily to spend in Portugal.

Passport Photograph

When applying for the Schengen visa, you have to attach two digital passports to your application. The passports must not be older than 6 months and should show all parts of your face.

Employment Details

You have to show proof of what you do before a visa is granted to you.

• If you are a student, you must provide a letter from your institution showing good academic standing and eligibility to continue schooling in the next term or semester.
• If you are employed, you must provide a letter that shows your company granted you leave and that you will return to work after your leave expires.
• If you are a business person, you have to provide your tax return and business licence.
• If you are self-employed, you are to provide a bank statement showing your pay for the past 6 months.

Proof of Accommodation

You must show the Embassy or Consulate that you have somewhere to stay on arrival to Portugal. You can show:

• A hotel or Airbnb booking that covers the time you will spend in Portugal.
• A letter of invitation from a family or friend who resides in Portugal. Note that this must be notarised and signed for it to be valid. The host will also need to add a notarised copy of their ID.
• A rental contract between you and a Portuguese landlord.
• A property deed that shows you have purchased a property in Portugal

Ties to the Philippines

You must prove to the Consulate that you have ties to your home country. Presenting any of the documents below proves so:

• Marriage certificate that shows you have a spouse to go back to.
• Birth certificate shows you have children to return to in the Philippines.
• Admission letter indicating you are still enrolled to complete a school degree.
• Business licence showing you run a business in your country.
• Letter that establishes your company approved your leave and you would return to work once your vacation is finished.
• Flight itinerary showing that you have booked your flight to and from Portugal. This indicates you will leave the country once your visa expires.

Proof You Have Paid the Relevant Visa Fees

You must attach the receipt that shows you have paid the visa fees. If you did not pay the fees online, you must attach a money order for the Consulate.

Cover Letter

The last Portugal visit visa requirement is the cover letter. In this letter, you have to supply the Consulate with your details. You must also tell them why you are going to Portugal when you intend to arrive and leave.

It is also vital to mention if you intend to visit other Schengen countries while on your trip.

How Much Does It Cost to Apply for a Portuguese Schengen Visa From The Philippines?

Below is what the Portugal Schengen visa will cost you:

• €90 if you are above 12 years.
• €45 if you are going with anyone between 6 to 12.

Children who are below 6 years old will not be charged any fees.

If you are travelling to Portugal with a family member like your sibling, parent or child who is a citizen of an EU country, then you are exempt from paying visa fees.

Gather Your Supporting Documents

Complete the Schengen Visa Application Form

You have to download this form from the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website. Fill out the form, sign it and attach it to your application package. Alternatively, you can get the application form from the Consulate.

Get an Appointment

Once you have completed the application form and gathered your documents, you can schedule an appointment with the Portuguese Embassy or Consulate. You have three options: A Portugal visa online application, emailing or calling the Embassy or physically going to the Embassy to schedule it.

Note that there is no Portuguese Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines. The Embassy of Greece, located in Manila, handles all Portuguese visa applications. The Embassy is at Unit 701, SEDCCO 1 Building, 120 Rada Street, Legaspi Village, Makati City, Metro Manila, Philippines 1229.

Pay the Schengen Visa Fees

You can pay the visa fees online. This is a quicker method. Alternatively, you can pay the visa fees when you get to the Embassy. Attach the receipt to your supporting documents after payment of the visa fees.

Submit Application

Go to the Embassy on the scheduled date for your appointment and submission of your documents. Note that the Embassy does not allow walk-in submissions. You have to get a date from the Embassy for that purpose.

Collect Your Visa

If your application is successful, you will get an email from the Embassy directing you to where and when to pick up your visa. If the application is refused, the Embassy will also tell you why.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Portuguese Schengen Visa?

It usually takes 15 days for the Embassy to decide on your visa application, but it is not uncommon for it to take longer due to the workload of the Embassy. Hence, if you want a Portugal visa apply 1 to 3 months to the date you expect to travel.

The Embassy could also take more than 15 days if they are trying to verify some of the information you supplied.

Can I Extend the Schengen Visa in Portugal?

It is very difficult and rare for your Schengen visa to be extended. On some occasions, such happened due to extreme and unforeseen conditions. Some of these conditions were due to war that broke out in the country of the foreign national. Filipino citizens interested in working in Portugal must apply for a work permit. The work visa or permit enables you to work in Portugal for 1 year, but you can renew for up to 5 years or as long as your employer needs you.

Your employer is the one who kickstarts the application process. You can only start your application after your employer appeals for you. The application process is initiated by your employer when he submits a petition to the Ministry of Labour.

You can then apply for a visa in the Philippines upon approval of your employer’s application.

If your visa is successful, you will get a residency visa that grants you entry into Portugal. You have  4 months to obtain your residence permit when you enter the country.

The residence permit is valid for 1 year.

Your work visa is a route to permanent residency or citizenship; your family can join you in Portugal.

The type of work visa you will get depends on the work you are employed to do. Below are the available work visa types:

• Visa for skilled workers like professionals in engineering, medicine or technology.
• Visa for those who have work contracts with tech companies.
• Visa for teachers and academic researchers.
• Visa for those into cultural activities.
• Visa for specially-skilled workers, whose salaries are 1.5 times more than the average annual salary in Portugal.

Eligibility

Before you apply for the work visa, here are the documents that you must submit to prove your eligibility:

• Valid Philippine passport, which serves as proof of identity and your nationality. This must have been issued within the last 10 years and is valid up to 3 months after your work visa expires.
• Recent digital passport not later than 6 months. This passport must show all the parts of your face.
• Evidence you have health insurance. The value of your insurance policy should not be less than €30000.
• Proof of employment in Portugal. You can present the job offer and contract from the Portuguese employer.
• Criminal record history. This should be obtained from the National Bureau of Investigation, a division of the Philippine Police Force. If you are applying for the Portugal work visa, apply online for the criminal record history certificate. You must also get this certificate from every country you have lived in for at least 3 months in the past 5 years.
• Consent form that shows you agree for Portugal to run a background check on you.
• Evidence you have accommodation in Portugal.
• Marriage and birth certificates if you are going to Portugal with your family.

To apply for the work visa, you have to pay

• €90 for the initial visa application from the Philippines.
• €83 before applying for your Portuguese residence permit at the SEF.
• €72 when you are issued the residence permit from the SEF in Portugal.

Processing Time

There are no specific processing times when applying for the Portuguese work visa. On average, however, it may take the SEF 2 months to make a decision on your work permit.

The Consulate could take up to 90 days to issue a residency visa.

Processing time is usually affected by the workload the Embassy and the SEF have at the time of your application.

Golden Visa

Filipino citizens are also eligible to apply for the Golden visa. This is Portugal’s visa by investment. The visa is for people who can invest in Portugal.

You can get your Portugal permanent residency or citizenship after 5 years. If you get the citizenship, you can apply for an EU passport.

Your family members can also live, study and work in Portugal if your Golden visa application is approved.

The Golden visa also permits you to visit other Schengen countries visa-free for 90 days.

If the SEF approves your golden visa application, it is valid for 1 year. However, you can renew it twice for 2 years each.

The benefits of the golden visa are numerous. Here are some of them:

Pathway to Citizenship

With the golden visa, you can get Portuguese citizenship and a passport. With this passport, you can travel to other countries visa-free.

Family Reunion

You can move to Portugal with your family, or they can join you later. You can bring your:

• Spouse or partner.
• Children 18 years and below.
• Dependent and unmarried children above 18 who have admission to study full-time in Portugal.
• Spouse’s siblings below 18 who are your legal wards.
• Siblings below 18 who are your legal wards.
• Parents if they are above 64 and are dependent on you.
• Spouse’s parents if they are above 64 and are dependent on you.

Access to the Schengen Region

You can move around the Schengen region visa-free with the Portugal golden visa. You can stay there for 90 days.

Exemption from Taxes

If you do not want to spend much time in Portugal, you can opt to be a non-habitual resident (NHR). As an NHR, you are not required to pay taxes on money you earn outside Portugal. But the return on the investment you made in Portugal will be taxed. You get to pay 20% tax instead of the usual 48%.

Eligibility Requirements 

To apply for the Golden visa, here are the requirements you must meet:

• You have to be at least 18.
• You must invest between €280,000 and €500,000 in Portugal.
• You must have a clean criminal history. This is proven by submitting a Police clearance certificate from the Philippines.
• You must present a bank statement that shows the fund you are investing in Portugal was not sourced from Portugal.
• You must be in Portugal for at least 7 days each year.
• You must present an affidavit that you will spend at least 5 years maintaining your investment in Portugal.
• You will present a health insurance policy certificate with a value of up to €30,000.
• You must obtain a NIF number.
• You must open a Portuguese bank account. You do not need this if you have a bank in the Philippines with a branch in Portugal.

Eligible Investments for the Portugal Golden Visa

To be considered for the golden visa, you must make an eligible investment in Portugal. The investment must cost you between €280,000 to €500,000. Below are the investments you can make under this program:

• Use €500,000 to start a company that will create a minimum of 10 new permanent roles.
• Fund an existing company with €400,000 and create at least 8 new permanent roles.
• Invest in scientific or tech research to be carried out in Portugal.
• Invest between €200,000 to €400,000 to maintain or refurbish a cultural heritage.

Documents Required 

To prove you meet the eligibility requirements above, you have to submit the following:

• Philippine passport issued within the last 10 years and valid for up to 3 months after your golden visa expires.
• Digital passport not older than 6 months.
• Criminal history certificate from the Philippines and any other country you spent at least 3 months in the past 5 years.
• Receipt of visa fee payment.
• Affidavit promising to maintain your investment for 5 years.
• Signed application form from the ARI website.
• Evidence you have invested in Portugal.
• Marriage and birth certificates if you intend to move with your family.

The principal applicant must pay €533 for visa processing. This fee must also be paid whenever you want to renew your visa.

Your dependents will pay €83 for the processing fee. This fee must also be paid whenever they want to renew their visa.

You must pay €5325 as the application fee and renew your visa with €2663.

It could take anywhere from 1 to 2 years for you to get the golden visa.

Portugal D7 visa

If you are a freelancer, remote worker, digital nomad, passive income earner or self-employed, you can apply for the Portugal D7 visa. With this visa, you can work remotely from Portugal.

The temporary stay and the residency visa are the 2 types of Portugal digital nomad visas.

With the temporary stay visa, you can work in Portugal for 1 year but renew for 2 more years. It also grants you visa-free access to the Schengen zone, allowing you to make multiple entries into Portugal.

The residency visa permits you to work in Portugal for 2 years. After that, you can renew for 3 more years. With this visa, you get only double entry into Portugal, but it is a visa that leads to citizenship or permanent residence.

Unlike the temporary stay visa, the residency visa allows for family reunification.

When you apply for this visa at the Greece Embassy in Manila, you get an entry permit valid for 4 months. Upon entering Portugal, you are expected to change your entry permit to a residence permit.

Visa Requirements for the D7 Visa

To apply for the D7 visa, you must present the following as proof of your eligibility:

• Valid Philippines passport.
• Government-issued birth certificate that shows you are at least 18.
• Marriage and birth certificates if you are moving with your family.
• Bank statement showing you earn at least  €3,040 every month for 1 year. Passive income earners have to show €8460 for 1 year.
• Proof of your source of income will remain even after your visa expires.
• NIF number from any tax offices located in Portugal.
• Valid Portuguese bank account.
• Medical insurance policy worth up to €30,000.
• Cover letter that outlines why you want to live in Portugal.

You will need to pay €180 for the visa application process.

You will pay €320 for the SEF to issue a residence permit.

It could take anywhere from 90 to 180 days for you to get a response on your application. The workload of the Embassy also contributes to extended processing times.

When you get to Portugal, scheduling an interview with the SEF may take up to 60 days. But it will take 14 days to get your residence permit after that.

Portugal Study Visa

If you are a Filipino citizen and wish to study or conduct academic research in Portugal, you must apply for a study visa. There are 2 types of Portuguese study visas: the Type C or short-term study visa, and the Type D or long-term study visa.

You apply for the Type C (short-term visa) if the research or study you are going for will not be more than 90 days.

You apply for the Type D (long-term visa) if the research or study you are going for will last more than 90 days.

The study visa is valid for 1 year but renewable depending on the duration of your course of study.

You can also travel to Portugal with your family. However, they must be your spouse/partner or your dependent children.

Study Visa Eligibility Requirements

To apply for the student visa, you must prove you meet the eligibility requirements by submitting the following documents:

• Philippine passport, valid for up to 3 months after your visa expires.
• Recent digital passport photograph.
• Proof of legal stay if you live elsewhere other than the Philippines. This could be a residency card, a passport or a visa.
• Bank statement showing you have enough money to live in Portugal. In place of a bank statement, you can submit a scholarship award certificate, sponsorship letter or proof of financial aid.
• Marriage and birth certificates if you intend to travel with your family.
• Cover letter explaining what you are travelling to Portugal to do.
• Letter of acceptance from the school.
• Proof you have a place to stay in Portugal. This could be an Airbnb or hotel booking, a rented agreement or an invitation letter from someone in Portugal.
• Medical insurance certificate worth at least €30000.
• Application form for a student visa. This must be signed; otherwise, your application will be refused.
• Criminal history certificate from the Philippines and any other country where you have spent at least 3 months in the past 5 years.
• Evidence you have paid your visa fees.
• Evidence you have paid your tuition fee.
• Proof of ties to your country. This can be a flight itinerary showing you have booked a flight to and from Portugal, a leave of absence letter from your employer indicating you will return to work after you complete your studies, and birth and marriage certificates to show you have a family to get back to or proof you have a business or property to manage in the Philippines.
• €90 as the application fee.
• €83 for the residence permit application.
• €72 for the issuance of the residence permit.

It could take between 1 to 3 months to get a decision on your visa application. This time varies according to the workload of the Embassy. To avoid delays in your start date, applying for a visa immediately after you get a letter of acceptance into the school is safer.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A SCHENGEN VISA & Other Frequently Asked Questions

We have made four European tours so far, two of them lasted 2 months. Hence, we receive tons of questions about getting a Schengen Visa. It’s quite expected. Europe is a dream destination for many, and the Schengen Visa is probably the most complicated visa there is. In this article, we’ll try to answer the questions we have been asked the most as adequately as we can.

However, bear in mind that we are writing based only on our own experiences and some contributions from our readers. The goal is to help other applicants have a better picture of the process. But we strongly encourage you to still contact the embassies for more updated info.

Anyway, it’s gonna be a lengthy post, so let’s begin.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

What is a Schengen Visa?

The Schengen Visa is a travel document that allows the holder to enter any of the 26 states that are part of the Schengen agreement. Think of it as an almost all-access pass to many countries in Europe, eliminating the immigration borders within the Schengen zone and the hassle of having to apply for a visa for each individual country.

What are the Schengen countries?

Here they are, all 26 of ’em.

Which embassy should I lodge my visa application?

It will depend on the purpose of your trip or your overall European itinerary. The rule is:

• If you’re visiting just ONE country, apply at the embassy of that country.
• If you’re visiting multiple countries, apply at the embassy where you will be staying the longest. For example, if you plan to spend 3 days in the Netherlands, 3 days in Italy, and 5 days in France, apply at the French Embassy.

However, some countries have additional rules. It is best to double check with the Embassy to be absolutely sure.

What if I’m spending equal number of days in different countries?

I’ll just copy-paste what the Dutch Embassy has to say about this:

“If you will be staying an equal length of time in more than one Schengen country and cannot designate one of these countries as the country of your main destination, you must apply for your visa at the mission of the first Schengen country you intend to enter .”

This means if you’re spending 3 days in Germany first, then 3 days in Italy and 3 days in France, you should apply at the German Embassy.

What are the requirements?

Schengen embassies usually ask for almost the same requirements. But there are some variations.

Here are the documents that are in common to all of them:

• Valid Passport
• Accomplished Application Form
• Recent Photo
• Proof of Available Accommodations (Hotel booking if no inviter, or invitation letter + citizenship/residency documents of contact abroad if invited)
• Photocopy of Passport stamps and visas
• Proof of Employment (ITR, Certificate of Employment for employees, and business registration documents and permits for self-employed)
• Proof of Financial Means (bank statements, bank certificates, land titles, etc.) Travel insurance covering the entire stay. Some require coverage for additional days.
• Identity Documents
• Complete Itinerary
• Flight Reservations

Some embassies add more to the list above, so make sure you check with the embassy that will process your application

What is the application process? What are the steps?

It varies from mission to mission. Some embassies, like the French and the Italian, employ a third party unit to handle most visa applications (VFS Global or VIA). Others take care of ’em in-house.

Here are the embassies I have personally tried:

Do we need to book flights before applying for a visa?

NO. Don’t book your flights yet. They only require flight reservations, not flight booking. Don’t pay for your flights yet. (Unless you grabbed promo fares at a seat sale.) Some travel agencies can reserve flights (often for a fee).

We recommend Gazelle Travel and Tours , a DTI-registered DOT-accredited travel agency. You can get flight reservations, hotel reservations, and travel insurance from them online!

Is travel insurance really necessary?

The short answer is YES.

The long answer is still YEEEEEEESSSSS.

Some embassies, like the Italian Embassy, requires an additional 15-day coverage on top of the travel period. Make sure you know these little rules when purchasing travel insurance.

Where to get travel insurance?

You can simply purchase travel insurance online. I have tried Pacific Cross and Standard Insurance , and had no problems.

You can book Standard Insurance with Gazelle Travel and Tours too! You can use the same form we made for Flight Reservations. Just tick TRAVEL INSURANCE in the checklist on the form.

Can I book hotels on my own?

Yep. You can book via third-party websites, but book hotels with FREE Cancellation policy so you won’t be wasting money in case your visa gets denied.

What does a detailed itinerary look like?

Can i visit countries that are not in the itinerary i submitted.

Yes, you can, as long as it is within the Schengen Zone.

However, we encourage you to at least visit the country that granted you the visa.

Can I visit the UK using a Schengen Visa?

NO. The United Kingdom is not part of the Schengen Zone and does not honor the Schengen visa. They have their own visa policy.

If you want to visit the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and other British territories), you will need to secure a UK visa. You can find more info here: UK Visa .

Can I visit other countries in Europe that are outside the Schengen Zone using the Schengen visa?

Yes, there are some non-Schengen countries in Europe that accept a DOUBLE or MULTIPLE ENTRY Schengen visa. Not all countries, but some.

Countries like Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, North Macedonia, Serbia and Kosovo allow entry to holders of a valid passport with a valid MULTIPLE ENTRY Schengen visa (provided that the visa has been used to enter a Schengen country before).

Note that each country has certain conditions including the length of stay.

What non-Schengen countries can I visit in Europe with a DOUBLE ENTRY Schengen visa?

A DOUBLE ENTRY Schengen Visa (two-entry) is also accepted by Croatia, Montenegro, Bulgaria, Romania, and Cyprus provided that the visa is valid and that it has been used once.

I have tried entering Croatia and Montenegro with a two-entry Schengen visa. Double entry is also specifically mentioned on their official websites.

The Foreign Affairs website of Serbia does not specifically mention DOUBLE ENTRY but I emailed them and they confirmed that Serbia allows double-entry Schengen visa.

Again, note that each country has certain conditions including the length of stay.

If my application is approved, do I have to stick to the itinerary I submitted?

Ideally, yes, but not really.

There are no checkpoints between countries within the Schengen Zone, there’s no way for them to check. You can deviate from your original itinerary if you want. We made a number of changes to our itineraries on the two occasions we visited Europe.

But my only guidance is this: At your point of entry, know that you might be asked questions about your itinerary. At the very least, stay the longest in the country where you got your visa so you won’t run into trouble. They have the right to refuse entry even if you already have a visa.

Is a cover letter required?

No. But I highly encourage you to provide one especially if there will be no interview. You can explain the purpose of your trip further. Here’s a sample .

Are embassies really strict?

Yes, but some are more strict than others.

For example, in my travel circles, the Italian and Spanish Embassies are notorious for being extremely meticulous, while the Dutch and Austrian Embassies are known for being more forgiving and considerate.

Is there an interview?

Some embassies conduct a short interview, some don’t. Usually, when a third party company (like VFS or VIA) is involved, there will no longer be an interview.

Here’s what I know so far: Do the following embassies usually conduct an interview?

• Austrian Embassy – NO
• Czech Embassy – LIKELY
• Danish Embassy – NO
• French Embassy – NO
• German Embassy – NOT ANYMORE
• Greek Embassy (for Greece and Portugal) – LIKELY
• Italian Embassy – NO
• Norwegian Embassy – NO
• Spanish Embassy – LIKELY

Again, that’s usually . Some applicants will be called for an interview at the embassy when they need further clarifications. It really depends on many factors but mostly how strong your case is.

In many cases, even when there is no interview involved, personal appearance is sometimes required. It’s best to check with the embassy to be sure.

If your embassy requires an interview or you are called for one, just answer their questions truthfully and confidently . Don’t lie. Most of the time, they will know.

What are the usual questions they ask at the interview?

I asked my friends what were the questions thrown at them during the interview and here are the most common. True enough, when I applied for a Schengen Visa on two separate occasions, these were asked too.

• What is the purpose of your trip?
• How long is your trip?
• How long will you stay in (country)?
• What is your first stop?
• What countries are you going to visit?
• When will you leave?
• When will you be back?
• Will this be your first time in Europe?
• What countries did you visit on your first trip to Europe and for what purpose?
• Do you know anyone in (country)?
• Do you know anyone in any other Schengen country?
• Do you know anyone in the UK (United Kingdom)?
• How are you related to them?
• How did you meet?
• With whom are you traveling?
• How are you related to your companion?
• What do you do for a living? (Expect a lot of follow up questions about your job.)
• How long have you been with your company?
• Does your company know you’re taking this trip?
• Do you own properties in the Philippines (home country)?

Based on experience, most of the questions were about three things:

• the details of the trip , which means you must know your itinerary by heart
• my connections to anyone in Europe . In my case, I had none. I have no relatives or close friends there.
• my job and my rootedness in my home country . In both cases, they gravitated towards finding reasons for me to return to the Philippines.

Again, answer truthfully and confidently.

Note that these are just the common questions. They might still ask a lot of other questions relevant to your background and application.

How early should I apply for a Schengen visa?

You can apply up to 90 days (3 months) in advance. While most embassies process applications relatively fast, it is wise to give some time allowance just in case something doesn’t go as planned (e.g. they ask for additional documents). I consider “a month before” too tight. Two months should give you enough time to secure a copy of all required documents and fix a problem should it arise.

How soon do they release the visa after receiving my application?

Depends on the embassy. If things go smoothly, the French Embassy releases visas after 5-7 days, the Greek Embassy 14 days. Most of the time, the wait is shorter. Sometimes, when they have doubts, it can take much longer.

For example, when I applied for a visa for my second Euro trip, the German Embassy took only 6 days. My partner Vins, who was applying for the first time and didn’t submit an ITR, was asked to send more documents to prove his rootedness in the Philippines. He did submit the requested additional papers and finally got his visa after 3 weeks.

I have friends who waited for over A MONTH!

On the other hand, I have a friend who applied via the Austrian Embassy and got her visa after only 3 days.

So it really depends on the embassy AND your case.

How much money should I have in the bank to be approved?

No one really knows for sure what the minimum amount is. But remember this: You will be asked to submit flight and hotel reservations and a detailed day-to-day itinerary. So here’s the rule of thumb. Add the cost of the flights you reserved and the cost of the accommodations and EUR 60 per day of your stay.

What’s the EUR 60 per stay? Think of it as your pocket money. Embassies need to be assured that you can afford the trip. The French Embassy requires at least EUR120 per day if accommodations are not yet settled. But if accommodations are booked, some embassies require EUR 45 per day, some EUR50, some E55. To be on the safe side, use EUR60 per day.

Let’s use this as example. Let’s assume that your roundtrip flight costs EUR1000 and your total hotel stay costs EUR1200 and you’re staying in Europe for 10 days. That’s EUR60 X 10 days = EUR 600.

1000 (flights) 1200 (hotel) 600 (allowance) EUR 2800 – TOTAL

Of course, that can’t be the only amount in your account. You should have WAY MORE than that. You have to convince the embassy that you will still have a comfortable life to return to in the Philippines after the trip.

But my point is, don’t apply for a 10-day visit with only EUR 1000 in your bank account.

My personal policy is P10,000 per day + cost of flights & accommodations.

How long is the validity of the visa?

Depends on the itinerary you will submit and the embassy.

When I applied at and submitted a 5-day itinerary to the French Embassy, I was issued a visa that was valid for 15 days.

When I applied the second time and submitted a 53-day itinerary to the German Embassy, I was given a visa valid for 60 days.

When I applied at the Greek Embassy with an 11-day itinerary, I was given exactly that, 11 days.

When I applied at the Italian Embassy with a 46-day itinerary, I was given 90 days.

It’s pretty hard to tell, so make sure you take your itinerary seriously because you’ll never know how long you’re gonna get.

What are the usual reasons why applicants are denied a Schengen visa?

I’m traveling to multiple cities. Do I need to submit train transfer and flight reservation within the Schengen area?

Some embassies require those, some don’t. You’ll know when you read their checklist.

In my experience, however, I have never submitted proof of train or bus booking. But I always submit flight reservations even for those journeys within the Schengen zone.

I’m traveling to multiple cities. Do I need to provide hotel reservation for all the countries I’m visiting or for the embassy’s country only?

If you’re staying at hotels, you must provide hotel reservation covering the entire duration of your stay within the zone.

If you’re staying in multiple countries, you must submit hotel reservation for all the countries where you will be staying, not just that one country.

If you’re declaring you’re going to Europe to visit a friend, yes, it will help. If you’re going there as a tourist, I recommend that you just reserve a hotel.

Embassies are often stricter sa applicants who have connections or kakilala in Europe than those na walang kakilala.

Yes, the number of days will be indicated in the visa. :)

They required me to go back to their embassy in 2001 after I returned from my tour of France. When I got to their office, they got my passport, took it to their back office, then handed it back to me after stamping ‘Expired Visa’ on my visa.

Hi Wilma, if you’re going to Spain, you will still need a Schengen Visa.

As for the reqs for senior citizens, I really have no idea. :( But I’m guessing you can submit a copy of Senior ID and bank accounts. Perhaps the COE/ITR may no longer be required for seniors. Again, these are all a hunch. Best to coordinate directly with the embassy.

Based on experiences of friends and our readers, they are stricter if you know someone in Europe. Traveling alone isn’t an issue for as long as you meet all the requirements satisfactorily.

DIY is fine. What we usually recommend is booking the flights and hotels on your own and then join group tours when you’re there.

Hi Donna, flight reservations lang muna. Aside from Manila-London tickets mo, pinaka-important yung Schengen entry and exit flights (London-Paris, Spain-London) kasi they need to see how you’re going to enter and leave the Schengen area.

Hello Yoshke – Sana matulungan mo ako. I can’t decide if I’ll stick to my plan A or plan B. Ganito kasi iyong Mom ko ay nakapasa na ng visa for Schengen. Aside from naipresent niya lahat, ininvite din siya ng Tita ko. Ngayon, my father wants me to join her as this will be her first time leaving the country alone. Nag-ayos na ako ng requirements kaso nahihirapan ako pagdating sa itinerary. My Plan A is – Sundin iyong itinerary na napresent mo sa taas w/o mentioning na I applied because of my Mom. Itinerary will be Belgium-Amsterdam-Paris-Belgium. My plan B is – I’ll mention that I’m applying to accompany my Mom. My itinerary will be a month in Belgium (which might sound crazy?)

Hi Hill. It depends on a lot of factors. What’s your current employment and personal financial status? If you don’t declare that bit about your mom, will you be applying as a tourist or as someone still invited by your tita? If you apply as a tourist, can your docs prove you can support a trip that long?

My top-of-mind advice is to just be honest and transparent. Just say you’re accompanying your mom. It sounds like a valid reason, to begin with.

Hi! Regarding “details of the trip” did the embassy asked you where exactly are you going in each country and when? did they asked you randomly or in order?

Sa German Embassy, yep, they asked about specific activities pero hindi sa lahat ng countries, konti lang. And yep, randomly.

Sa Greek Embassy, they asked about each activity in the itinerary, per day, in order.

When I tried to bring my Filipina girlfriend to Greece, back in 2011 I think, I asked the Greek embassy about the requirements for the visa. They were vague, not specific, they just said that the girl needs to have a high-salary stable job like a doctor or lawyer, and much money in bank, and a credit card, etc,,, even if I officially invite her and host her and pay her food etc. I guess that the embassy is afraid of illegal immigration and makes the visa impossible for most Filipinos. Eventually, I married the girl, and then she applied for spouse visa and now we live happily in Greece.

Yep, you can declare AirBnB. We did before, wala naman naging problem. Just submit the reservation confirmation.

Hi Gelo, I’m afraid they don’t see it that way especially if hindi family member kasi applications are often assessed individually.

Also, yung 60 euro per day, that’s the minimum but having that doesn’t guarantee anything. I’m pretty sure they’re looking for much more than that (kasi hindi believable or ideal for them if yun lang ang fund ng account). If French Embassy ka pala apply, their standard now is 120 euro per day.

Yes and yes. Even if your trip is sponsored by someone else, you will need to prove rootedness.

Saang embassy ka nag-apply? Italian? The Italian Embassy is known for being super strict.

I think medyo clear naman yung reasons na sinabi nila sa pag-deny. Hindi nila sure if babalik ka ng Pilipinas before mag-expire ang visa. Usually, kapag ganyan, it’s a matter of proving rootedness (stable employment, properties in PH, etc). Madalas din na denied kapag may kakilala ka dun sa Europe tapos hindi clear ung connection mo sa kanya, hindi clear ang purpose ng trip, and hindi strong yung ties sa PH.

Hindi enough na complete yung docs. They have to find it satisfactory.

Gagawa pa kasi ako ng letter of support, lagay ko don na ako ang nagbayad ng lahat ng tickets namin at ako magbabayad ng hotel accommodations namin. Lahat kami may experience na travelling around asia. ako at mama ko may experience na din sa europe. Sa italian embassy kami mag apply kc don ung entry namin, at sa itinerary namin for 15 days nasa loob lang kami ng italy at lilibutin namin lahat ng tourist spot cities. I haven’t tried applying via Italian embassy so there’s not much advice I can give. All I know is, based on experiences of my friends, they’re very thorough and strict.

I just want to reply on this nessage cause I just went through the same thing recently. My Norwegian boyfriend will sponsor my trip to Norway and he sent the invitation letter, Guarantee form and other needed documents. We just followed all the instructions and documents na need isubmit sa checklist. Since sponsored nya no need na for me to submit bank statements or proof of financial status (basta ma meet ng mag sponsor sayo yung minimum income pre tax per year) and when I submitted our application after 2 days I was granted a tourist visa for 3 months. Ang nakikita ko importante is nag meet na kayo before in person (they want to see na totoo yung relationship nyo) and n ma meet ng sponsor yung min. income pre tax to prove na kaya ka niya isponsor and ma prove mo na babalik ka sa Pinas yung rootedness malamang ma aapprove ka. I applied earlier this year, unfortunately, I got denied Now, I wanted to reapply and make sure that I provide the details in the most proper way. However, I heard some dark rumors about it. This makes me very confused since I already submitted files before stating that he is my boyfriend. Would it be easier if I say this time that he is my friend? Does it make a change or should I stick to the truth that he is my boyfriend?

Hi Fatima, yes, I believe they’re much, much stricter if you’re invited by someone especially if boyfriend-girlfriend. When they denied your application, did they tell you the reason?

I’m asking because I don’t think changing it to “friend” will make that much of a difference. It’s risky too because you already said he’s your bf before. When you declare that you know someone in Europe, they’re going to take a closer, stricter look at your “rootedness” — that’s your ties to PH, employment, properties in your name. If wala ring nag-change sa rootedness mo — meaning, you’ll still be submitting the same docs — I don’t think maaapprove yung application this time around.

But again, that’s just my hunch. Some people na na-deny, what they do is they apply sa ibang embassy na lang as a tourist, not a visitor. Not that I recommend it because it’s also a risk and it only works if okay yung rootedness and finances mo.

I find your blog helpful, thank you! I will be applying a Schengen Visa at Italian Embassy this month and I stumbled about Flight Reservations. Does Gazelle Tours offer 2 week reservation of flight because apparently, Italian visa has approximately 2 weeks processing time. What happens if the flight reservation expires while the application is being reviewed? My another concern is that I will be spending Christmas and New Year with my Mother and brother ( they are legal residents there ) but I am thinking it will be a more complicated process ( since Italian Embassy has thorough and strict process as you have mentioned ) that’s why I will be applying as a tourist instead. I had used schengen visa issued by Singapore last 2016 (back when I was an OFW ) so this is the first time I am applying in the Phils. What’s your take on this? As you have applied with several embassies, I would appreciate your opinion on this ;)

What happens if the flight reservation expires while the application is being reviewed? —- How long the airline can hold the reservation depends on the airline and class. Iba-iba kasi ng policy ang bawat airline. The thing is, most airlines now can hold reservations for only 24-48 hours. And I think the embassies know that. We’ve had flight reservations na nag-expire while being processed but hindi naman nagka-problem. Pero French, Greek, and German embassies yun. Hindi ko lang sure sa Italian Embassy. My guess is, it doesn’t matter to them kasi alam din naman nila yun and feeling ko, mas concern nila ung rootedness, finances and employment kaysa dun. At the very least, sana hindi pa expired nung time na nag-submit ka ng documents. You can ask the agency to issue the ticket the day before your appointment.

I will be applying as a tourist instead. —- Even if you apply as a tourist, you’re still going to be asked if may relatives ka sa Italy. Parang mas dubious or suspicious if apply ka as a tourist pero may immediate family members ka dun. Baka mas maka-affect negatively? Huhu, di ko alam. Pero uyyyy, opinion ko lang ‘to ha. I’m in no way an expert in this, lalo sa Italian Embassy kasi di ko pa natry dun.

Hi Den, I’m not sure. Usually, they subject applications na may romantic connection sa Europe to further scrutiny, but at the end of the day, if strong yung proof of relationship and kaya namang magstand on their own nung financial/rootedness status mo, pwedeng maapprove pa rin naman.

I have a terminal illness and I am planning to visit Lourdes , France .My nephew will accompany me kasi nga sick ako. Should we apply our visa together? Paano kung magkaiba ticket nmin pabalik ,sya uuwi ng Pinas , ako babalik ng Saudi(I’m still working) Medyo hindi ok ang rootedness ng nephew ko sa pinas.

If you’re both applying here in Manila, the French embassy through VFS Global will treat your application separately, but you could state in your cover letter that you will be traveling with your nephew. This happened to us (husband and wife) when we applied last year, I had to write an impromptu cover letter for my wife, and photocopied several documents because I assumed wrong i.e., since we’re a couple, shared documents will do (experience with UK embassy).

You will also need to tweak your itinerary and make it appear that you will both leave the Schengen area together i.e., same outbound tickets.

Will you be applying from Saudi? Kasi if so, di ko alam ang process pag sa Saudi.

You always have the option to cancel or hindi tumuloy sa nasa flight reservation mo after the visa processing.

Thanks for replying. I asked the same question to Youtube vlogger, Lyka Krystle the same day I asked you and she confirmed that FYI, its not me who will submit the invitation letter, my sponsor will email it instead along with his bank statements and passport/ID photocopy to the Italian embassy. That means a physical copy is never a thing in this situation at all, so theres no need to waste a paper here. As an applicant, I dont need to do anything else aside from helping my sponsor to fulfill the 3 main requirements. My sister and I are graduating this June and plan to go to Europe with our mother around October as a graduation gift. Hi Sofia, I think it’s possible to get a visa pag fresh grad lalo na kung family trip sya. You can explain that it’s a graduation gift and since kasama nyo naman yung parents/sponsors, mas believable yun if sabay-sabay yung pag-apply nyo. Bukod sa usual requirements, submit na lang din kayo ng proof na kakagraduate nyo lang recently.

Hi Mark, depends on the airline. Some airline websites allow MULTI-CITY booking.

Another workaround is to book via a 3rd party website like Skyscanner, Traveloka, Expedia.

Hello, my father invited me to join his family to go on a month trip to EU. Will be there for a month if approved. He will be sponsoring our trip since he has a stable company. If ever, I will be travelling with my father, step mom and 2 baby step brothers. They already had several visas including Schengen before, while me I am unemployed. I used to have a Japan visa for a year. I have a daughter here in PH who will not be joining us due to school. I’m wondering if theres a high possibility that I will be approved?

In general though, the chances of approval depend on a lot of factors playing together: employment, finances, rootedness and (sometimes) travel history.

Me and my husband plan to travel to EU this coming septermber for our 12th anniv for 14days. I work as a web dev online (homebased) no ITR and my husband works with his current employer for more than 6 years na din which is previously homebased din pero now kumuha na sila ng office here. No ITR din si husband currently pero meron sya Form 2307 – Certificate of Creditable Tax Withheld at Source. Is that okay na kaya to submit + COE, payslips? Ang balak kasi namin sya na lang ang magsubmit ng lahat ng requirements. I’ll declare na lang na im a housewife / no income and sya magshoulder lahat ng expenses para i dont need to submit any other req’s(proof of income) na since i dont have ITR. We have few properties owned and car din and has 2 kids pero kami lang ni husband ang magtravel to EU. Prev travel was HK, SG, MY, South Korea(ME), Japan, Shanghai – all with family. Sa tingin mo malaki ang chance namin maapprove? My brother is also a resident in Norway pero magappply kami as tourist not sponsored tho magvivisit kami sa kanila since on our planned travel kasabay din namin ang parents ko since they want to visit my brother in norway.

Hi ahb19, we can’t assess po and predict your chances without having a really good look at your documents. Depende kasi yan sa napakaraming factors. It’s not enough na meron ka nung required docs, need din nila iconsider ano ang laman ng mga docs na yun. So we really can’t say.

Is your full-time job stable? Can it support your lifestyle and your trip? According to a travel agency that I consulted before, sometimes, if the full-time job can stand on its own, it’s better to not mention any part-time or freelance work because they just complicate things. I don’t know if it’s good advice, but it makes sense to me.

Hi Yoshke! Thanks for the guide. We are planning to have a month long multi-country honeymoon trip in Europe next year at April. We plan to apply after our wedding in February. However, I can’t seem to find in the internet what is the best way for our case: we will enter first in Madrid, spend the longest in Germany, travel to other neighboring schengen countries, then from Paris to London and spend our last days there before heading back to Manila.

Therefore, we need to apply for 2 visas, one schengen through the German Embassy, and one UK Visa. Do you have any idea or suggestion which is better applied first? The schegen or the UK?

No idea. I haven’t tried applying for a UK visa yet kasi. But my friends na pumunta ng UK + Schengen area, they applied for UK visa first. Not sure if that’s right, but that’s what they did.

Hello. Will it help if i show credit card statements? Sa korea kasi wala ako pinakitang bank certificate, Platinum credit card lang na 1.5M ung limit. So for example i only i have 100-150k sa bank at the time of application and then i present it together with the credit card… will it compensate ung low balance ko sa bank?

Hi Bernie, yes, the credit card statements can surely help. But not sure if sapat yung 100-150K sa bank. Minsan may mga naaapprove na ganyan but they’re more the exception than the rule. Schengen embassies are a lot stricter than the Korean Embassy. And depende rin sa length of trip mo. :)

Yes. If you’re going to declare you’re going to be sponsored by someone else, you should be able to prove that your sponsor can afford it.

Hi Joy, in theory, pwede pareho. Pero in practice, depende yan sa kung OK ang employment and rootedness documents mo. In my opinion, if OK naman lahat, complete naman, satisfactory naman sa tingin mo, mas OK if self-funded yung trip.

Pero if may problema yung sayo tapos maganda naman yung kay husband, pwede rin naman si husband.

Hi Weng, di ko alam kapag ganyang case. Pero yung experience ko, kahit na nakuhanan na rin ako ng biometrics dati, kinuhanan pa ako ulit. In-ask ko ung staff kung bakit ako kukunan ulit. Sabi nila, safer daw kasi na kuhanan na lang para di na bumalik in case hindi readable yung dati.

That means that your insurance should cover March 27-April 22. (Actually di ko sure kung until 22 or 23 dapat.)

Hi! I am applying for a schengen visa from the Czech Republic in Manila. My main purpose is to meet my boyfriend’s family. I met my boyfriend in the US, and he has been in the Philippines, so this time, I would like to do the same for him. My dilemma is, if I should apply for the visa with an invitation letter from him or just apply for the tourist visa all by myself. Applying with an invitation often makes the application a lot more complicated. That’s why in my travel circles, it is widely believed that if your finances, employment and rootedness are great, better to apply without it. The only catch is you will need hotel reservations for that.

I don’t think it matters, unless hotspot sa kanila ung destination. But I think China is fine.

When we fly to the Schengen Zone, we usually come from Singapore. We stay in SG ng 2-3 days before ung flight namin. Di naman sya problem.

Which embassy po?

Yes, that counts as sponsorship. You can declare that your accoms/tickets will be sponsored by parents but other expenses by yourself.

Since you’re applying on your own, it would help to write a cover letter explaining that you will be traveling with your parents so they know it’s a family trip and get a better picture of your case.

France embassy po. If I declare na accoms/tickets sponsored by parents will they ask for documents ng parents ko even if other expenses will be mine? Wala po kasi local bank parents ko puro US banks if ever manghingi sila ng documents of my parents.

Based on my experience with the embassies of France/Italy/Greece/Germany, they will only give you back the passport.

Sa experience ko, kung tama ang pagkaalala ko:

sa Italian Embassy, hindi kinuha ung original na old passport.

sa Greek and German Embassies, kinuha nila.

sa French, hindi ko na matandaan talaga.

Best talaga na dalhin na lang din para if kunin, dala mo. Ibabalik naman yan din sayo on the spot if hindi kailangan.
