Westerham, Kent:  A Complete Town Guide

This guide has everything you need to enjoy a trip to Westerham, Kent. It’s a pretty town, known by many as being the hometown of former Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, for over 40 years. It’s also a great spot for independent shopping and dining out. Being close to the countryside too, Westerham is on the border of Surrey and is near to many great places for those that love spending time outside.

Places to eat in Westerham

No trip is complete without good food, which is why I have included places to eat in Westerham, Kent first. Although the town is fairly small, there’s no shortage of options to eat out, no matter the time of day.

Westerham High Street

Chows This Chinese restaurant has been in Westerham for 25+ years. When I dined there the food was great and the service quick, even with a large table of us dining and lots of different dishes to prepare. There was a good atmosphere from other customers being around. Mr Chow is very friendly and attentive too, speaking to all the guests that dine there.

Rendezvous Brasserie

Another restaurant that has survived the test of time is Rendezvous , which opened over 30 years ago in Westerham. They serve classic French cuisine, in a simple, modern setting. This spot is also open for breakfast which is great for people staying in the area – the menu is full of eggs though, so not somewhere to head if you’re a vegan!

The Old Bank Westerham

The Old Bank If you’re one for fine dining, this is the place to head in Westerham. The head chef Adam has trained with some of the best, including the head chef for the Queen. The regal deep green exterior is matched by elegant interiors and expertly plated food. The former vault is now a wine cellar which you can visit for wine tasting sessions.

Tudor Rose Tea Rooms

Located in a central spot behind the Winston Churchill statue on the green is the Tudor Rose . There have been tea rooms in this spot for over 100 years! The menu is made up of everything you’d want from a tea room – tea, cake, sandwiches, and even full English breakfasts. If you’re lucky, you may be able to nab a spot to dine outside on a sunny day.

Grasshopper on the Green, Westerham

Grasshopper on the Green With low ceilings, antique jugs and a roaring fire, this 700 year old pub has an oldy worldy charm about it. The twinkling fairy lights outside welcome you in. There’s also a small garden for drinks in the summer, as well as picnic tables on the green. The menu is full of hearty meals including pies, burgers, chilli, and roast dinners.

No17 Wine Bar You’re spoilt for drinks choice at this bar with a 15 page menu full of wines, gins, and cocktails. The interior is stylish and contemporary, offering something different to this historic town. Nibbles are available too, and there is regularly live music.

Napoli e, Westerham

Napoli e Tucked away down a side lane is this Italian restaurant . You could almost be fooled into thinking you had stepped out of Westerham, Kent and into Italy with its authentic feel. The menu is full of the classics you’d expect, with a wide range of pastas and pizzas as well as meat and fish dishes. Food is cooked to order using fresh ingredients and online reviews all rave about the ambiance.

Shopping in Westerham, Kent

Shopping in Westerham, Kent is a must if you visit, as there’s several independent shops and boutiques. Whether you’re looking to pick something up for yourself or treat a relative or friend, you can find homewares, fashion, food and more here.

The Interior Design Studios

The Interior Design Studios

If you’re looking for statement pieces for your home, then you need to look in this interior design store. From the outside it’s a very attractive building but you can’t tell just how far back the shop stretches, and there’s a downstairs too. I saw some of the biggest chandeliers I’ve ever seen in here! There’s plenty of unique pieces of furniture that will be the talking point for any visitors to your home.

Chocs on the Green, Westerham

Chocs on the Green

This sweet little shop is full of greetings cards, gifts, chocolate, and fudge – everything you need to celebrate an occasion in one shop. You can buy pre-made chocolate boxes, or pick chocolates individually to make up a personalised box. There’s a lot of variety, and the options change seasonally too. I was impressed that they had a range of vegan options as I can’t have dairy so I enjoyed some fudge from here.

The Hive Gift Shop and Gallery

I love the concept of this shop – it only stocks items handmade by local artists and crafts people. There is a range of art, sculptures, ceramics, glassware, embroidery, and more. They feature a guest artist every month and foster the development of talented young artists by inviting students to sell their items in-store. They offer a gift wrapping service and accept commissions too.

The Italian Shop

The Italian Shop

I’ve never come across a dedicated Italian food shop before, and I didn’t expect to see one in a small town like Westerham! But this shop is actually one of three owned by the same people, there’s another in nearby Oxted, and one in Tunbridge Wells. If you love Italian food it’s a must visit. Oils, antipastis, cheeses, meats – there is a large variety of authentic Italian delicacies to try. You can also buy pre-made veg and fruit boxes to add some fresh goodness to your cooking.

Dressed, Westerham

You can’t miss this shop with its impressive leafy exterior and cute pink front door. Inside it’s filled with womenswear and accessories. The owner is great at keeping the shop’s Instagram up to date so you can see what new stock is available in-store. Some can be bought online too, but the real experience comes from browsing through the many options in person.

Quercus Wines

This small but perfectly formed shop is the place to head if you’re a wine fan. There’s a range of wines to browse, that have come from small wine producers around the world. The selection is regularly changing, and the owner can help advise if you’re not sure what to pick.

The Vintage Home Company

The Vintage Home Co

This home interiors shop has been based in one of Westerham’s Victorian buildings for over 16 years. It’s a maze of different rooms and an outdoor space filled with furniture and homeware that’s been carefully curated. It’s a lovely shop to explore and is definitely loved amongst locals who like to check out the latest finds in the window display.

Places of interest in Westerham, Kent

As well as shopping and dining on the main high street, there’s plenty of other places to explore in and around Westerham, Kent. You can try out locally produced beers and wines, enjoy the history of National Trust owned properties, or get some fresh air with plenty of walking routes.

Chartwell

The home to former Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, this property is now owned by the National Trust. It sits in beautifully maintained gardens and there is also a restaurant and shop on site. The rooms in the house remain much as they were when he lived there, and you can also see many of the paintings Churchill completed.

Westerham Brewery

Westerham has a strong background in producing beer. Not only are there tours of this brewery , there’s also street food traders who serve meals here on different nights of the week. This includes spaghetti on Wednesdays, pizza on Fridays, fried chicken and hotdogs on Saturdays, and Italian seafood on Sundays.

Quebec House

This is another National Trust owned home which was once the residence of James Wolfe, a British army general who was born in Westerham. Under his command the British won against the French in the Battle of Quebec, however sadly James was fatally wounded. You can discover more about his life and his childhood at this property .

Toys Hill

Yet another area owned by the National Trust, Toys Hill is made up of more than 200 acres of woodland . It offers great views over the Weald of Kent, and is a great picnic spot. It’s recognised as a grade I site for nature conservation. If it’s a sunny day and you’re driving, aim to get there early as the car park and the road leading to it quickly fills up.

Squerryes Winery

Squerryes is a 300 year old estate where you can tour the vineyards and of course, enjoy wine tasting sessions in their special tasting room. You can discover more about their ancestral estate and vintage sparkling wines. If you want to eat, there’s a restaurant on site too.

Limpsfield Chart

Limpsfield Chart

This is a lovely trail to walk in the woodlands. Even better, it has a hidden fairytale animal village called the Peter Rabbit Trail. It’s rather enjoyable to spot the different animal lodgings if you’re out on a dog walk or visiting with children! There’s a few different car parks in the area but the closest to the Peter Rabbit Trail is Ridlands Grove.

Exploring the charming town of westerham in kent, last updated 14th june 2022, including a visit to quebec house.

The picturesque town of Westerham in Kent is located just a few miles south of the M25 and within touching distance of the Surrey borders. The charming town is surrounded by rich, lush countryside. It lies within the Kent Downs a short distance is the High Weald, both of which are Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

We visited Westerham as part of our delightful road trip around the region, exploring the nearby historic homes and digging deeper into the local history.

Westerham is full of intriguing connections with the past and two of its prior notable residents, Sir Winston Churchill, who lived nearby at Chartwell House and General James Wolfe, who resided at Quebec House as a child. Both of these historic residences are managed by the National Trust.

How to get to Westerham

- By Train The nearest station to Westerham is Oxted (4 miles); a taxi rank is outside. However, Sevenoaks station (6 miles) is accessible from London Charing Cross , and it’s then a 20-minute bus journey on the no. 401.

- By Car Westerham is located on the A25 and can easily be accessed from the M25 (jct. 5 or 6). There’s a car park to the east of Westerham town which is free for three hours.

A little history on Westerham

The historic market town of Westerham was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086; however, it can trace its roots back thousands of years. With evidence of a Celtic fortification and Roman ruins nearby. Keep a lookout for the meandering River Darent flowing through the charming town. Squerryes Court now stands on the site of the original Westerham Manor, which was once owned by King Harold. After King Harold was defeated by William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, William I gave the manor to Eustace of Boulogne. Later, William’s granddaughter, Queen Matilda, inherited the estate. Westerham Manor continued to pass through the hands of the British gentry. The present manor Squerryes Court , built in the late 17th-century, is now a winery.

The clocktower of St Mary’s Church in Westerham, Kent

In 1227 King Henry III granted Westerham a market charter. It became an important town for the trading of cattle in Kent. The last cattle market was held in Westerham in 1961. St Mary’s Church in Westerham is believed to date from the 13th-century. However, there have been many alterations to the structure over the centuries. John Frith, a Protestant martyr, was born in Westerham in 1503; due to his beliefs which opposed Roman Catholic teachings, he was burned at the stake at Smithfield in London in 1533.

Exploring westerham.

Our first stop strolling through Westerham is to The Green. This charming part of Westerham is so delightful, surrounded by historic buildings and welcoming shops and cafés. Westerham Green feels like the hub of town life, with locals chatting with one another and passing the time of day. It’s such a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by.

A bronze statue of a seated Winston Churchill mounted on a large piece of rock on Westerham Green in Kent

You’ll instantly be drawn to the magnificent bronze statue of Sir Winston Churchill, sculptured by Oscar Nemon, and you’ll spot another of Oscar’s creations in Chartwell . Like many bronzes, it’s so tactile that you can’t help yourself; you just want to touch it. I’ll revisit Sir Winston a little later in this post.

All around Westerham and especially The Green, there are references to Winston Churchill and his wife Clementine; tearooms, boutiques, and streets are named in their respect.

The historic Grasshopper on the Green pub on the edge of Westerham Green in Westerham, Kent

One historic building that will certainly draw your attention is the 16th-century Grasshopper on the Green inn (renamed in 1994). This ancient coaching inn overlooks The Green and where the livestock markets were held for many years. The Grasshopper Inn used to be a coaching station on the route to Fleet Street in London, prior to the next stop of the Bell in Bromley.

Where to stay in Westerham

Strolling the charming streets of westerham.

There are several charming buildings throughout Westerham with numerous tales to tell; however, I especially loved it around Market Square. Many of the local shops were independent stores offering that little something different. There’s a captivating mix of Georgian style structures, buildings with timber-framed façades and white weatherboarded fronts. It’s such a varied combination within one town.

Shops on the southern half of Market Square in Westerham, dissected by the A25 trunk road

Keep an eye out for the narrow road Fullers Hill; there is a lovely looking family-run Italian restaurant here named Napoli. We didn’t get a chance to pop in; however, I’ve earmarked it for next time. Take a little wander along a few side streets, particularly Lodge Lane; there are some truly appealing red brick cottages here.

The Rendezvous Brasserie on Market Square in Westerham in Kent

We continue along the High Street, and near the bottom, it bears right around a corner; on the left is a 16th-century old forge and stables, which was once a smithy, now privately owned. Further along, you’ll spot the 16th-century white-clad building, the General Wolfe Inn. Don’t get too excited; you can’t go in, it is now a private home, but it has a considerable character.

Westerham’s most notable resident

The market town of Westerham could not be mentioned without including its most famous nearby resident Sir Winston Churchill. Sir Winston Churchill lived at Chartwell House with his wife Clementine and their family from 1922 until he died in 1965. Chartwell is now beautifully managed by the National Trust. It is incredibly easy to see why Sir Winston and Clementine fell in love with it. It would have been such a contrast from his exceptionally busy life in London.

The rear view of the red-brick Chartwell House from the corner of the lawn.

Although I must admit my favourite place within Chartwell was Sir Winston’s art studio. The studio houses the largest collection of Churchill’s magnificent paintings. It’s hard to believe he only started to paint in 1959 when he was in his 40s. I’ve written an individual article on Chartwell as it is a stunning home, and I wanted to do it justice.

Another famous Westerham resident

The red-brick 17th-century Quebec house in Westerham, Kent

James Wolfe was born in Westerham on 2nd January 1727; his family were renting the attractive Quebec House, then known as the ‘Spiers’. Quebec House was renamed in his honour after he died a hero in battle. The 16th century home is now managed by the National Trust. James resided at the Grade I Listed Building, Quebec House, for the first 10 years of his childhood until his military family moved to Greenwich in 1738. James Wolfe was destined to become a soldier, and he received his first orders by the age of 14.

An exhibits room inside Quebec House with items of memorabilia and military paraphernalia

By the time he reached 22, he had experienced battle four times, had been wounded on three occasions and was in command of his own regiment. In January 1759, James Wolfe was appointed major general and commanding officer of British land forces in the expedition against Quebec. Wolfe had seen action in France, Belgium and Scotland, to name a few. He was a major at 18 and a lieutenant-colonel by 23.

A Martello tower and canon on the Plains of Abraham overlooking the Saint Lawrence River in Quebec, Canada

The long hard siege led to the victory of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham for Major Wolfe; however, James succumbs to his injuries on the battlefield from three musket balls. Gary and I visited Quebec and went to the Plains of Abraham; it is astonishing how the British troops scaled the 200-metre cliffs and then faced a battle against the French.

A brass plaque with a profile portrait of Major General James Wolfe mounted on a wooden clad wall inside St Alfege's Church in Greenwich

Major Wolfe’s body was returned to Britain, and he is buried in the family vault at St Alfege Church in Greenwich. Coincidentally where my parents were married. Throughout the museum at Quebec House in Westerham are memorabilia relating to James Wolfe and his battles; you’ll also experience how James’s family lived in the family home during the 1730s.

Kent's south-facing chalky soil and the mild climate provide the perfect conditions for the wine-growing industry similar to champagne in France. In fact, champagne producer Taittinger has land in Kent for producing English sparkling wine.

There are more than 50 vineyards in Kent, proving that the county knows a thing or two about the wine and is worth a trip.

One of the top vineyards is on the Hush Heath Estate, home to the Balfour Winery , as well as Chapel Down and other names to know.

Hush Heath Estate, Tonbridge

The first vineyard at Hush Heath Estate wasn't planted until 2002 but it officially landed on the wine map a few years later when 10,000 bottles of Balfour Brut Rosé, made from the first harvest in 2004, won a gold medal at the International Wine Challenge in 2008. The state-of-the-art Balfour Winery and its tasting room opened to visitors in 2010 and it's certainly a place worth experiencing.

The vineyard's sparkling was the first English sparkling wine to be served in British Airways' first class cabin and was the official English wine of the 2012 London Olympics. Apart from the award-winning sparkling and still whites and roses, there are beautiful woodlands and orchards to stroll. You can also stop for a bite in the nearby Goudhurst Inn, owned by Hush Heath.

You can book vineyard tours and tastings and directly with Hush Heath Estate.

PLACES TO STAY NEAR GUSBOURNE

Yotes Court Vineyard, Maidstone

You could easily mistake the south sloping vineyards of Yotes Court Vineyard for Tuscany or the Napa Valley, but this modern 75-acre venture is actually located between the pretty villages of West Peckham and Mereworth in Kent. Originally a fruit farm, this spot was identified as the perfect site for a vineyard by Master of Wine Stephen Skelton, then meticulously planted in 2016. In the early years, the grapes were grown exclusively for Chapel Down, but in 2018 the Yotes Court brand was born.

These days, Yotes Court is one of the best vineyards in Kent, with an easygoing, welcoming atmosphere that makes it great for all wine lovers. You might drop in for a glass of wine and a light lunch, or opt for a vineyard tour, wine tasting or special event, including the harvest experience, where you can spend the day picking grapes – then enjoy the fruits of your labour with a wine-fuelled lunch.

You can book vineyard tours, tastings and experiences directly with Yotes Court.

If you're looking to stay the night after a few glasses of some of Kent's finest, try The Carpenters Arms, a well-respected four-star spot in nearby Tonbridge

PLACES TO STAY NEAR YOTES COURT

Biddenden Vineyards, Ashford

The oldest family-run vineyard in Kent, Biddenden consists of 23 acres and produces top-notch white, rosé, red and sparkling wines, as well as Biddenden Cider, a strong, still cider, and Biddenden Farm Pressed Apple & Pear juices. Eleven different grape varieties are grown here and the winery produces around 80,000 bottles of wine a year. All vine work is still carried out by hand, including pruning, canopy management and picking, with harvest running from mid September right through to November.

There are vineyard tours, self-guided tours and meet the winemaker tours, plus a shop stocking local and regional products like jams, honey, chutney and local cheeses. Biddenden's Ice Cider is another must-try and can be enjoyed during tastings and purchased from the on-site shop. The sweet cider is made from fragrant apples picked at peak ripeness from a local orchard. Their juice is then frozen to achieve a refreshing drink that's perfect for summer and buying as a gift.

You can book vineyard tours, tastings and picnics directly with Biddenden.

There are some wonderful cottages in the picturesque village for longer stays in the area, such as the Grape Escape from Holidaycottages.co.uk.

PLACES TO STAY NEAR BIDDENDEN

The Mount Vineyard, Sevenoaks

Spanning 28 acres, The Mount Vineyard sits in the beautiful village of Shoreham, with its lovely pubs featuring bunting in the summer and cosy open fires in the winter. The boutique vineyard in Kent is a hidden gem and has 10 acres of vines, producing fine sparkling and still wines that have won awards.

Tours usually take place between June and September (check the website for current Covid-19 opening) and you can learn about the vines that were planted in 2004 and the eight varieties grown for producing red, rosé and white still wines, including the premium dry sparkling rose and white pinot.

Visit The Mount Vineyard's website to book a tasting directly.

Make it a group getaway and check into The Old Stables, a Grade II-listed conversion with space for 10, idyllically located in the grounds of Lullingstone Castle.

PLACES TO STAY IN SEVENOAKS

Simpsons' Wine Estate, Canterbury

The roots for this glorious estate were laid down in 2014 amid the beautiful Elham Valley, an untouched area of the North Downs of Kent. Here, the contours, climate and soil lend themselves especially well to viticulture, with the sunny slopes of the village of Barham providing the ideal spot in which to grow grapes for sparkling and still wines.

A gleaming Glass House proves a gorgeous spot for wine tasting sessions, and there are winery tours and tasting experiences aplenty. Another highlight is 'Sunset Sessions', which include the chance to raise a glass on a hazy summer evening and enjoy a locally sourced platter (these are available throughout the summer months).

Visit the Simpsons' Wine Estate website to book a tasting or experience directly.

PLACES TO STAY IN CANTERBURY

Herbert Hall Winery, Tonbridge

For English sparkling wine that is made by hand using traditional methods and organically grown fruit, it has to be Herbert Hall Winery, the small family-owned gem in Kent. It's located in the village of Marden, on a 10-acre sloping estate to the west of the village, and is now run by Herbert Hall's great-grandson Nicholas Hall along with fellow winemaker Kirsty Smith.

The brilliant bar at this Kent winery is open on Saturdays and Sundays during the summer (opening is weather dependent, so do check their Instagram feed for the latest updates). The bar serves beer, cider, soft drinks – and, most importantly, Herbert Hall wines. If you love the latter, they can also be picked up in the on-site shop.

Visit the Herbert Hall Winery website to find out more.

PLACES TO STAY NEAR HERBERT HALL WINERY

Squerryes Winery, Westerham

The awards keep rolling in for the sparkling wine made at this Kent vineyard. According to Squerryes, this is a testament to the quality of our fruit grown in their terroir high on the North Downs. The signature vintage brut is a 'real crowd pleaser', making this a great introduction to English sparkling wines and the beautiful vineyards in which they are created.

Of the many experience on offer here, the best might be the tutored tastings. For a more relaxed option (which included a cheese and charcuterie board, try the Taste of Squerryes with the vineyard's wine ambassador, Suzy Ioannide. This takes place in a small group, making for an intimate, informative yet relaxed session.

Visit the Squerryes Winery website to book a tasting or experience directly.

PLACES TO STAY NEAR SQUERRYES

Chartham Vineyard, Canterbury

With a terroir that boasts very similar characteristics to the Champagne region of France, Chartham Vineyard is a haven for sparkling wine lovers, but it also offers excellent red, white and rosé wines. There's a long history of viticulture in the area (The Domesday Book mentioned a few vineyards in East Kent, including Chartham) and this modern-day vineyard makes the most of this legacy.

On Saturdays at 11am and 2pm, there's the chance to meet the owners and take a guided tour of the vineyard in its historic setting, as well as taking part in tutored wine tastings to learn more about the delicious creations on offer here. The sparkling Blanc de Blancs, Rose de Noir and 3-year aged Classic Reserve in particular are not to be missed.
