In this bustling metropolis, finding halal-friendly accommodations can be a challenge. However, fear not – Seoul is unveiling a haven for Muslim travelers with its emerging trend of Halal hotels. Join us as we delve into the amenities, services, and top picks for a faith-friendly stay in this vibrant city!

The challenges faced by Muslim travelers in finding halal-friendly accommodations

As Muslim travelers explore new destinations, one common challenge they face is finding halal-friendly accommodations. The struggle often lies in locating hotels that cater to their religious dietary needs and provide a comfortable environment that respects their faith.

In many countries, the availability of halal food options can be limited, making it difficult for Muslim travelers to enjoy a worry-free dining experience during their stay. Additionally, some hotels may not offer prayer facilities or Qibla direction indicators in rooms, posing another obstacle for practicing Muslims.

Moreover, cultural differences and language barriers can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or miscommunication regarding halal standards and requirements. This lack of awareness can make it challenging for Muslim travelers to ensure that their accommodation aligns with their beliefs and values.

Despite these challenges, the rising trend of halal hotels in various destinations around the world is gradually addressing the needs of Muslim travelers by offering dedicated services and amenities tailored to accommodate their preferences.

Is Seoul halal friendly?

Seoul, the vibrant capital of South Korea, is gradually becoming more halal-friendly to cater to the needs of Muslim travelers. While it may not be as prevalent as in other countries, Seoul has seen a rise in halal options in recent years. From restaurants offering halal-certified dishes to prayer rooms in shopping malls and airports, Seoul is making strides towards accommodating Muslim visitors.

Travelers can find a variety of mosques scattered throughout the city, with the Seoul Central Mosque being a central hub for Islamic activities and services. Additionally, many hotels now offer halal amenities and services to ensure a comfortable stay for their Muslim guests.

Although there are still challenges faced by Muslim travelers in finding halal options compared to other destinations, Seoul’s efforts to become more inclusive are evident. A bewildering place with 5000 years worth of history and culture, South Korea is another world!

Visitors to this mesmerising country usually flock to the capital city of Seoul, and they have a good reason for that! Seoul is the third largest metropolitan area in the world and its where all the action takes place.

A modern city that is bustling around the clock, Seoul offers tourists more than just Kimchi and Bibimbap – two of the most famous foods to try when you’re in the city. Thanks to the tourism department of the country, Seoul has transformed into a haven for Muslim travellers.

have halal will travel korea 2022

As the country began receiving a high number of Muslim visitors from Malaysia and Indonesia, the tourism department quickly began working on ways to accommodate the requirements and needs of Muslim travellers.

have halal will travel korea 2022

With Seoul always enjoying a visitor boom, the city has never had more allure. Along with a spectacular mix of skyscrapers and a shanty town known as Guryong Village, Seoul also has an ever-growing food scene, many vibrant neighbourhoods and is home to South Korea’s largest mosque. Constructed in the late 1970s, the Seoul Central Mosque was the first mosque to be built in the country. Sitting on top of a hill and majestically overlooking the Itaewon district, this mosque stays true to its distinctly Islamic design and architecture which adds a noticeable uniqueness to the district’s skyline!

King Charles III and His Veneration of Islam

Itaewon is one of those districts that attracts tourists as well as locals. Although the city is packed with a web of obvious choices for first-timers, Itaewon is a great place to start if you’re looking for great food, impressive hotels, shopping and places of worship.

What’s more, Itaewon proudly provides spaces for faith and freedom and is a place where so many cultures come together. This alone is what makes the district so different from the others.

Eating Halal in the Korean Countryside

have halal will travel korea 2022

As the Muslim population in rural areas of South Korea continues to grow, information about – and access to – Halal has becoming a bigger issue. This has become very important to some of us at South of Seoul due to the fact we have watched friends struggle with this in the past and now we are watching many of our classmates at Namseoul University struggle with it as well.  Since the university is located one subway stop south of Pyeongtaek in northern Cheonan, we feel it is high time we did something to help.

We aren’t going to lie and say there are tons of options, but there are more and more every year and there are certainly more than can be easily found on Google. It is high time we helped keep track of them and made it easier for our community to find them. Here is what we will be doing to help with this issue:

  • Find all halal options that aren’t in the South of Seoul app yet and add them.
  • Clearly identify all halal options in Pyeongtaek, Cheonan, and Asan so they can be easily searched in the South of Seoul app.
  • Identify which groceries sell halal products and make them searchable.
  • Create blogs about halal delivery and restaurant options so more information is available in Google search.
  • Support and promote halal options in the area so that more Muslims are aware of what is available.
  • Talk to apppropriate businesses about offering halal options.

Although we may not share a religion with our Muslim friends, we do share this struggle of living life in a new country without access to things we hold dear. We hope that this information will help those in need of halal live more comfortably and happily in Pyeongtaek and the surrounding areas.

With that said, let’s look some of the Halal delivery and restaurant discovery options that are available:

Halal friendly Korean restaurants around Seoul

Halal friendly Korean restaurants around Seoul

For muslim travellers, Itaewon is known to be the ultimate halal hub. From the food to the mosque. However, in this post I will introduce you hidden halal friendly Korean restaurants all around Seoul.

1. Gosame, Sinchon

First up, we have Gosame. It is a popular fish mackerel restaurant, a hidden gem tucked in the streets of Sinchon.

I came across a blog that say that they are upset having pork served to them, but that’s because you ordered it. When you order the right menu, and you are confident with it, Insyallah it is safe to consume.

Here’s what you can order there.

My friends and I always get the stir fried spicy squid, grilled mackerel, bean paste stew and rice.

Their stif fried spicy squid is so so good!

2. Yangpang chicken at Ehwa Womans University

Here’s where you can get the taste of authentic Korean fried chicken.

Only their boneless chicken is halal. How do I know that? The restaurant owner showed to me and my friends himself that the boneless chicken is from a halal origin.

In the menu, you will see their boneless chicken section. This is where you can order from.

Taking the photo above as an example, we always order their fried chicken, spicy chicken and soy sauce chicken . Sometimes we add in rice too if we feel like it.

Friendly restaurant owners

If you’re obviously dressed as a muslim or if you mention to the restaurant owners that you’re muslim and you’re there for their halal chicken, they will show you exactly what you can order from their menu.

The restaurant owners are a couple of husband and wife in their 50s or so. I remember once during ramadhan, when we had our breaking fast there. They let us pray maghrib there at the store. They are friendly and great people!

3. Halal Kitchen

Third one on the list, we have Halal Kitchen. A muslim Korean owned business.

As stated in the screenshot above, it is a 3 minute walk from Bukchon Hanok Village.

They serve all kinds of authentic halal Korean food. For example, Bulgogi with rice, Japchae, stir fried chicken with rice and many more.

4. Eid at Itaewon

Fourth on the list we have a Korean muslim owned restaurant called Eid. It is located in Itaewon. Of course there are so many other halal restaurants in Itaewon but just in case you haven’t heard of Eid, I’m putting this in the list.

It serves authentic halal Korean food.

They have food ranging from bulgogi, samgyetang chicken, kimchi jjigae and others.

My personal favourite is their bulgogi meal set!

5. Kampungku at Myeongdong

This little gem is no stranger to Malaysians. They serve Malaysian cuisines and Korean cuisines too!

From fried rice, tomyam, pizzas to korean cuisines.

Overall, finding muslim friendly food in Korea, is not as hard as you think. So don’t worry about starving because there is always something safe for us to consume!

Let me just put a disclaimer that most of the restaurants here approved by muslim students studying there to be safe to consume. When you’re overseas away from the comfort of your home country, especially a student studying there or someone who works there, you can’t expect most stores to have an official halal certified outside of Itaewon. You take care of your food at all costs, but you cannot expect countries that are not muslim majorities to have halal certified everywhere.

Halal tourism as a strategic option for South Korean tourism

Profile image of Faris Al-Fadhat

2022, Journal of Islamic Marketing

Purpose-This study aims to investigate the opinion of a group of informants in Seoul-South Korea's foremost destinationon the possibility of developing a halal tourism policy that is closer to the wishes of Muslim customers, which is also in line with Islamic principles. Design/methodology/approach-This research investigated the perceptions of 17 key informants. The data was conducted through interview about the possibility of developing an industry that is more in line with the lifestyle of Muslim tourists and more in line with halal criteria. Findings-This study shows that the idea is quite attractive, especially among Seoul tourism industry players and even the South Korean Government itself. Although the potential for halal tourism is recognized, its development is currently divided into three groups, namely, groups that support the development of the policy, groups that reject and groups who do not care about it. Originality/value-The research in this paper shows further developments from the studies that have been conducted in Djerba, Tunisia, that halal tourism carried out in Seoul, South Korea, has become a priority for the government through agencies/institutions/communities related to the halal industry.

The growth of the Muslim travellers has meant that Muslim travellers are becoming a significant segment, which will affect the global tourism industry. In non-Islamic context, halal tourism is relatively under-researched and an increasing number of destinations including South Korea are keen on tapping into this segment and adapting their services to take into account the unique faith-based needs of Muslim travellers. In South Korea, a growing number of tourists visit for leisure, with an increasing trend of visitors from the Muslim majority nations. A great deal of activities has been undertaken to draw the attention of these travellers, including offering hotel facilities as per the religious convictions of Muslim visitors. Because of the above pattern, it is accordingly imperative to examine the present strategies and administrative system to identify and certify halal or shariah-compliant hotels and F&B establishments in South Korea. The investigation was conducted utilising subjective research whereby the data was collected using multiple interviews of the authorities regarding this matter. The findings of this research will be provided to expert bodies and industry authorities to revisit the current arrangements for having halal certifications for hotels and F&B establishments in South Korea. The findings of this research will present hoteliers with the required knowledge, prospects and difficulties that they might need to consider before initiating any halal certified hotels in South Korea. Keywords: Tourism Industry, Hotel Industry, Halal Food, Halal Certificate, South Korea.

Halal tourism policies are alternatives in the diversification of the tourism industry. In non-Muslim majority countries, such as Singapore, Thailand, Japan, and South Korea, these policies expand the market segmentation, especially tourists from Muslim majority countries. This paper explains the halal tourism policy in South Korea, which only started in the last 5 years. Specifically, it analyzes various factors supporting halal tourism in South Korea, despite being a non-Muslim majority country. The study uses qualitative data collected through direct observation and interviews. This paper argues that economic and market factors are not the only considerations for the Korean government in supporting this policy. The results indicate that halal tourism emerged due to domestic demographic changes with increasing Islam in South Korea. Moreover, this policy was strengthened by China's economic pressure, which restricted its population from visiting South Korea. The restriction was...

Halal has become a global issue today, not least in Indonesia. At the state level, Indonesia is planned to become the world halal center. This is clearly seen by the Ministry of Tourism trying to increase the number of tourists visiting Indonesia, especially visiting halal tourist destinations. Some regions are trying to compete to become areas that are friendly to halal tourism, including Lombok, Aceh and finally Malang City. Regarding the halal tourism trend, it is important to know about the concepts and parameters used in implementing halal tourism. This study aims to conduct an in-depth analysis of the concept of halal tourism and several parameters that are used as standard for halal tourism destination. The method of data collection uses documentary methods based on a review of both primary and secondary literature. The results of this study are that the concept of halal tourism can be classified into two importance aspects; first, the act of obedience, which described as a way to appreciate the greatness of God's creation. Second, the act of fulfilling an economic demand. While the parameters of halal tourism have to meet material and spiritual criteria, such as the activities have to meet shariah regulation which avoid syirk, disobedience, tabdzir or israf, and falsehood. On the other hand, the availability of services and infrastructure which meet the Muslim tourist criteria.

This study aims to investigate the perception of Muslim travellers toward Halal lifestyle in South Korea. This study is significant due to a huge growth of Muslim tourists in South Korea over recent years. Statistics has shown an influx of Muslim tourists from Malaysia travelling to South Korea from year-to-year. Interviews were conducted to gain indepth and comprehensive insights of Malaysian Muslims’ percipience on the Halal culture in South Korea. The questions were designed in the interview covers three issues, which include the pre-travel behaviour, extensity of information search, and travel decision. According to the interviews, most of the travellers spent their time conducting research, explicitly on Halal dietary matters before heading to South Korea. They also stated that it was quite hard finding places that serve Halal food. Therefore, we concluded that the Halal principle adoption in Korea influences the travel decision by most Muslim travellers.

Indonesia as one of the countries with the largest Muslim population in the world has enormous potential to develop industry in the halal tourism sector. Halal tourism from year to year is growing continuously, considering the large number of Muslim tourists who travel but still prioritize the guidance of the Islamic religion. One of the regions in Indonesia that is encouraged to become a halal tourist destination is West Sumatra. However, until now, people's understanding of halal tourism is still different from one another. There are even some people who are worried that halal tourism is only for Muslims. This is a qualitative research with a case study approach. Data was collected by semi-structured interviews with 30 tourists, which were classified into domestic Muslim tourists, domestic non-Muslim tourists and foreign tourists. This is done in order to obtain data on how the perception of each tourist about halal tourism and what kind of halal tourism can provide tourist sa...
