Then head to Bass Pro Shops in downtown Memphis, Tennessee where you’ll find more than “just” a shopping mecca for outdoorsmen, On a recent visit to Memphis (read more about our favorite spots in our Memphis City Guide ) , we stopped at the once sports arena, now a 535,00 square foot Bass Pro Shops complex. Choose a favorite species of fish and watch the waterfalls. There are daily fish feedings at 10am and 3pm that kids will enjoy. In total there are nearly 600,000 gallons of water features throughout the complex. Note: Keep a close eye on the toddler crew. The small bridges and paths, although close to the ground, are open or have wide roping which kids can easily slip through and fall into the streams.  4. Shop for everything from apparel, shoes, and hats to camping, fishing, and boating equipment to ATVs, boats, canoes, kayaks and everything else the adventurer might need. Smaller shops tailored to specific interests are located throughout the larger store complex.  5. Climb aboard some of the TRACKER boats available for purchase. There are numerous kiosks that share various identification about the habitats and taxidermy of waterfowls. There are also interactive 4D duck blind experiences and a display of waterfowl decoys. 9. Take a ride 28 stories up on the world’s tallest free standing glass elevator to The Lookout . The ride will make the 100 foot trees (inside the store) seem small! The observation deck at the top has a glass floor and 360 degree views of Memphis and the Mississippi River. The Lookout Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week and includes options for kids, a separate dessert menu, and a large wine selection.  There is a $10/per person $5/child fee for the ride. 10. Take the Kids to the Ballgame

Growing up in Boston, it was literally in my DNA to root for the Red Sox. When I first met my husband, and found out that he was also a Sox fan, I knew we were meant for each other. We’ve been going to Fenway Park for years, and when we made it our mission to see each and every ballpark in the country, the idea for summer road trips (and this blog) was born. Bringing our children along for the games has certainly given us a new perspective… But in many ways, the experience has become even more enjoyable.

I wrote about kid-friendly aspects of ballparks for Kidventurous a couple of years ago. But since then, we’ve discovered several new perks to bringing the kids along to watch America’s Pastime.

Nine Tips for Visiting Quassy Amusement Park in Middlebury, CT

We recently kicked off summer 2024 by spending the day with our daughter and a few of her friends at Quassy Amusement Park and Waterpark, located in Middlebury Connecticut.

Named after Lake Quassapaug, the property where the park sits now was originally a hotel and summer resort in the late 1800s. In the mid 1910s, local businessmen bought the property and added several attractions, growing the property into an amusement park by the 1950s. Each decade, the park expanded with new rides and the addition of the waterpark in the early 2000s. Today, Quassy offers close to two dozen rides in the amusement park, and almost a dozen water slides in the waterpark.

10 Ways to Explore the Cape Cod National Seashore

10 Ways to Explore the Cape Cod National Seashore

The Cape Cod National Seashore is one of the most popular spots on the Cape, attracting 4.5 million visitors each year. The 43,608 acres of the Seashore are spread out across six towns and on both the Cape Cod Bay and Atlantic Ocean sides of Cape Cod, the “flexed arm” of Massachusetts. Overseen by the National Park Service and established in 1961, the National Seashore encompasses 40 miles of beach, 12 self guided hiking trails, six public beaches (Coast Guard, Nauset Light, Marconi, Head of the Meadow, Race Point, and Herring Cove), 6 lighthouses, three biking trails, fishing and hunting, and two Visitor Centers (Province Lands  and Salt Marsh).

The Visitor Centers are free to visit, as are many ranger led programs and activities, and showcase the history of the Cape, beginning with the English pilgrims who arrived at Provincetown on the Mayflower in November of 1620 . Visiting National Park Service sites (there are over 400!) are one of our favorite activities in a new spot and we really enjoyed our recent to the area. Most people explore the Seashore during peak summer months, but there is still plenty to see and do during the quieter winter months.

10 Things to Do at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History

Cape Cod, located in the southeastern part of Massachusetts, was first formed 6,000 years ago with rising seas that eroded the glacial sands that made up the area. It is a popular vacation spot year round, but especially comes alive during the warmer summer months. There are dozens of beaches, golf courses, clam shacks, ice cream shops, and plenty of hands on activities the whole family will enjoy. The area is also rich with historical sites, and my family recently revisited (it had been many, many years) the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History . The museum complex includes 400 acres of land in Brewster, midway on the Cape, Wing’s Island, salt marshes, a beach directly on Cape Cod Bay, a large indoor museum and aquarium, exhibition space, and educational spaces for camps and children’s programs.

Regular readers will recall my passionate enthusiasm for the National Park Service. A quick search on my blog and you will find dozens of sites we have visited- check them out here . Whenever we travel or visit  a new area, I always check for any nearby site- the Park Service has an app and website for searching sites. On a recent trip to lower Manhattan to explore the Fraunces Tavern Museum and National Museum of the American Indian , we realized we were less than a half mile from Federal Hall National Memorial and decided to visit.

20 Best Golf Resorts In The South

bass pro shop trips

Some of the South’s prettiest sights are found on golf courses. Whether you’re an avid golfer or are content to drive the cart, few can deny the allure of a freshly cut course and the gorgeous scenery that surrounds it. And while we may have to enjoy the Azalea Hole at Augusta National from the comfort of our couches, there are beautiful courses across the South where setting a tee time is as easy as picking up the phone or hopping online. So when you’re looking for a place to unwind for a weekend away, a golf resort is a more than worthy option. The South is home to dozens of glorious golf resorts that offer not only world-class courses, but also luxurious accommodations, first-rate amenities, beautiful grounds, serene spas, excellent dining options, and a host of other activities to fill your time off the links. Here we share 20 iconic Southern golf resorts where you can play and stay in style.

How We Picked This List

These golf resorts were picked by the editors of  Southern Living  who report, research, and visit resorts across the South.

Pursell Farms

Courtesy of The Inn at Pursell Farms

Sylacauga, Alabama

This resort a little over an hour from Birmingham is a dreamy getaway where luxury accommodations, picturesque landscapes, and outdoor adventure combine on a family-owned farm. The property’s 40-room inn, cabins, cottages, and large-group lodge effortlessly blend Southern sophistication and rustic charm. The 18-hole course features dramatic elevation changes, pristine fairways, and immaculate greens all set against the backdrop of bucolic farmland. It’s also been named the number one all-access golf course in Alabama for 10 years and counting. Guests who don’t golf can bide their time with a host of other activities including UTV riding, fly fishing, sport shooting, horseback riding, axe throwing, archery, and pickleball.

Ross Bridge Golf Resort and Spa

Birmingham, Alabama

Play a popular portion of the famous Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail (31 courses at 11 sites that span the state of Alabama) at the Renaissance Birmingham Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa. Located in a quiet suburban neighborhood, the 259-room hotel features a resort-style pool, award-winning spa, and one of the best breakfast buffets you can find anywhere. The onsite course is known for being the fifth-longest course in the world, but there are multiple tee boxes at each hole to suit golfers of all levels. While the entire course is exquisite, the waterfall that cascades 80 feet between the 9 th and 18 th greens is truly a sight to behold.

Pinehurst Resort

Pinehurst, North Carolina

There’s a lot of history behind this legendary resort that built its first course more than 125 years ago. Often called the Cradle of American Golf, the massive property now features nine 18-hole courses, a putting course, and a short course. This is a bucket list resort if there ever was one. The U.S. Open will be played entirely at Pinehurst in 2024 from June 13-16, the first time in over a century that a single site has been awarded four Opens in a span of 25 years. If you visit, you’ll have the option to stay in one of four historic hotels, or in a villa or condo. Just like its impressive collection of courses and accommodations, the resort isn’t short on amenities and things to do. From a brewery to a private 200-acre lake to an onsite historic village, there’s plenty to explore.

Courtesy of Sea Island

Sea Island, Georgia

With 80 Forbes Five-Star Awards and almost 100 years under its belt, this oceanfront resort is the crowned jewel of Georgia’s Golden Isles. The luxury resort consists of two distinct stays, The Cloister (located on a 50-acre plot with five miles of private beach) and The Lodge, a boutique hotel and private cottages. On the golf side of things, the resort features three championship courses, practice greens, and a state-of-the-art Golf Performance Center. The Seaside course, surrounded by tidal creeks, dunes, salt marshes, and the Atlantic Ocean, is consistently ranked among the country’s top 100 courses.

seaisland.com ; 100 Cloister Drive, Sea Island, GA 31561; 855-572-4975

Palmetto Dunes

Hilton Head, South Carolina

Hilton Head has long been known as a golfer’s paradise, and Palmetto Dunes has certainly contributed to the island’s reputation. The oceanfront resort sits on 2,000 acres with direct access to three miles of beaches, a full-service marina, and an 11-mile lagoon system. It’s a big draw for families, but golfers can’t get enough of the resort’s three championship courses that were each designed by a different golf legend: George Fazio, Robert Trent Jones, and Arthur Hills.

Reynolds Lake Oconee

Ritz-Carlton Reynolds Lake Oconee

Greensboro, Georgia

As one of the only lakefront Ritz-Carlton properties in the world, the views at Reynolds Lake Oconee are unrivaled. The 19,000-acre lake is an aquatic playground where guests can boat, waterski, kayak, fish, swim, and enjoy the scenery. The lake may be the heart of the resort, but its golf courses are equally impressive. The resort features six courses, many with great views of the water. When guests aren’t teeing off on the course, they can improve their game at The Kingdom, an integration of equipment technology and golf instruction.

Kiawah Island Golf Resort

Kiawah Island, South Carolina

This five-star resort is an island paradise where all the worries of everyday life melt away. Between world-class amenities, 10 miles of private sandy beach, and more than a dozen dining options, you won’t have to lift a finger to have everything you need to truly kick back and relax. As the resort’s name implies, golf is a major part of the experience at Kiawah Island . There are five championship courses to choose from. Several have been played during tournaments like the Ryder Cup and PGA Championship, so you can have a pro-style experience on a course designed by Pete Dye, Tom Fazio, Clyde Johnston, Jack Nicklaus, or Gary Player—the only decision to make is which to play first.

Naples, Florida

You can’t beat a Ritz-Carlton, and when the location is in sunny Florida, there’s not much else you can ask for. Families love the resort’s waterpark, complete with a winding river, water slides, and private cabanas. Certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, the resort’s two 18-hole championship courses are well-known for their beautiful natural settings that show off the best of the area. Each was designed by golf great Greg Norman. After a long day on the course, the 51,000-square-foot spa is the place to be.

PGA National Resort

Palm Beach Gardens, Florida

This resort features 99 holes of championship golf over six courses, including the Champion course, which hosts the PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic each year. After a $100 million renovation, the resort now has all new interior and exterior design, new restaurants, activities, and amenities. Stay in a two-bedroom cottage or a suite, both will be elegantly designed and offer the perfect setting for a relaxing retreat.

Innisbrook Golf Resort

Palm Harbor, Florida

Part of the Salamander Collection, this resort on the west coast of Florida is the location of the PGA Tour’s Valspar Championship every March. When it’s not being used for the tournament, all four of its courses are open to guests. Pine tree-lined fairways and rolling terrain await at each, just beware of the Copperhead Course’s infamous Snake Pit, which has made or broken many a tournament. But the courses aren’t the resort’s only draw. There are also six heated pools, bike rentals, yoga classes, fishing on the lake, tennis, a spa, and more.

Bowling Green, Florida

Located within 90 minutes of both Tampa and Orlando, Streamsong didn’t waste much time getting its name on the scene when it opened in 2013. For the past decade-plus the resort’s courses have maintained positions on the most prestigious lists of best golf courses. Its three courses, Streamsong Blue, Red, and Black, are home to towering sand dunes, sandy fields, and pristine lakes, all of which come together to create a one-of-a-kind setting. A fourth course, called The Chain, is now open for preview play on 13 holes. The accompanying lodge and clubhouses feature 228 rooms and suites. Amenities range from access to guided bass fishing to sporting clays to archery.

Sea Pines Resort

As the original Hilton Head resort, the genesis of Sea Pines goes back to 1956 when Charles Fraser, whose family owned much of the island, had an idea for an all-encompassing vacation destination. Today, the resort is thriving, with the number one luxury hotel on Hilton Head Island, as well as home and villa rentals and a host of activities for guests to enjoy. What makes this a bucket list destination for golfers is the Harbour Town Golf Links course, which is home to the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage tournament. Set on the Calibogue Sound with uninterrupted views of both the water and the famous Harbour Town lighthouse, this course is as picturesque as they come.

Big Cedar Lodge

Ridgedale, Missouri

Overlooking Table Rock Lake in the Ozark Mountains, Big Cedar Lodge has a reputation for connecting families with the rugged great outdoors, while offering everything you’d want from a lavish vacation. Created by Johnny Morris, founder of Bass Pro Shops, Big Cedar is the definition of rustic luxury. Kids will never run out of things to do thanks to Fun Mountain, where they’ll find everything from laser tag, bowling, and go-carts to a ropes course and giant playground. Long Creek Marina offers opportunities for boating, fishing, wakeboarding, and tubing. Even the golf here gives visitors a chance to bask in the glory of Mother Nature. All five courses offer stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains. It all comes together at Mountain Top, a 13-hole walking course that perfectly melds the minds of conservationist Morris and golf pro Gary Player into one unforgettable experience.

The Greenbrier

White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia

Known as America’s Resort, The Greenbrier has become a household name among Southerners. The resort and National Historic Landmark nestled in the Allegheny Mountains has been an American tradition since 1778 with no signs of slowing down. It’s especially vibrant at Christmas and Easter, when the sprawling ground are decorated to the nines to celebrate the season. Everything about the Greenbrier is grand and impressive, and its four golf courses are more of the same. Many of golf’s most accomplished athletes have walked the greens at the Greenbrier, so to play a course here is to follow in the footsteps of greatness.

20 Things From Bass Pro Shops That’ll Practically Plan Your Next Camping Trip For You

Planning a trip can cause a lot of tent-sion, but not anymore with these products.

Stephanie Hope

BuzzFeed Contributor

1. A mosquito repeller , because there is literally nothing I hate as much as those pesky little monsters. It basically works by creating an invisible shield of up to 15 feet that will keep icky bugs out of your campsite without using DEET, smelling weird, or using an open flame.

The mosquito repellent

Price: $24.99

2. Bath wipes so you can keep yourself feeling *and* smelling fresh during your entire trip.

A person wiping their arm with the bath wipes

Price: $4.99

3. A fire starter , because you don't want to embarrass yourself in front of nearby wildlife when you can't even get your campfire started, am I right? "Wow, I remember my first camping trip." — the grizzly bear nearby.

A person trying to start a camp fire

Promising review: "I use this product to start my campfires out on the beach when I am camping out. This fire starter helps me get my fires started with the strong ocean breeze. I never go camping without one." — CBJeep

Price: $7.99

4. A North Face backpack to hold all of your camping essentials, like a first aid kit, snacks, a change of clothes, snacks, a flashlight, sunscreen, and maybe some snacks. Just the essentials.

Two people hiking

The 22-liter North Face Jester backpack is made of a lightweight and durable 300-denier polyester with a water-repellent finish. It's also designed to stand on its own for easy loading and unloading with various pockets and compartments for all of your things.

Price: $69.99

5. A battery-operated fan because summers are hot and there's no electricity out there in the forests (much to my dismay).

The fan

Promising review: "I have two of these that have been on a dozen 10-day trips. Batteries last all night constantly on. They run quietly and keep air moving in the tent and flies off the picnic table . I use rechargeable AA batteries with size converters." — Gwells58

Price: $9.99

6. A Lifestraw water bottle to give you instant access to drinkable water basically anywhere you go. This is because of the bottle's two-stage filter system which cleans water of bacteria, impurities, and protozoa. Not me daring all of my friends to drink stinky lake water with this bottle.

A person drinking water from a LifeStraw bottle

The Lifestraw water bottle included an activated carbon filter that filters up to 26 gallons of water and protects against lead, heavy metals, chlorine, and odors to improve the taste. It's also BPA-free and holds up to 22 ounces of water.

Price: $39.99

7. A four-person tent — even if there are just two of you, this way you can have tons of legroom and not have to feel like a bunch of sardines in a can. Don't let it become a new similar phrase: humans in a tent.

A tent out in the wilderness at night

Price: $349.99

8. An aluminum picnic table that folds out so you have a place to sit and eat when you don't want to find the *perfect* sitting log.

The picnic table

Promising review: "This thing is great! It’s sturdy for a camping table, super easy to set up, and lightweight. I’d definitely recommend it!" — Zombiekat

Price: $129.99

9. A camp cupboard to store all of your belonging in a nice and organized way. Not me keeping everything in bags and ruffling through them every time I need something. I would never.

Three people at a campsite

Promising review: "It's very well made and sturdy. It should last for many years!" — Anonymous

Price: $104.99

10. A tube of seam sealer , because trust me — the last thing you want is to come back to your tent after a long, rainy hike, and notice that the entire shelter (and all of its contents) have gotten soaked. Then you have to dry and pack everything and book a weirdly stinky motel nearby. What? No, this didn't happen to me...

A person applying the seam sealer to the tent

11. Tissue paper to keep your tush clean without having to use a questionable leaf while you hope it's not poison ivy.

The tissue paper

Promising review: "Nice and compact. Best for those outdoor emergency situations." — ShiftyGirl

Price: $1.79

12. A bug-proof LED lantern that will switch from a bright white bulb to an amber bulb that's invisible to bugs. Basically, you won't have to deal with annoying moths and pests that fly around your light for up to 175 hours. Huzzah!

The lantern

Price: $49.77

13. A rechargeable LED flashlight so you can always have a bright light to shine your way. This flashlight has a waterproof rating, so it can handle even the rainest of camping trips *and* you can even charge your phone with it when the light isn't in use.

The flashlight

Promising review: "Right upfront I'm going to say I love this light. It's a convenient size, not too small like a penlight but not too big like a full-size flashlight. The switch is on the side, slightly raised, making it easy to find in the dark. There are two brightness settings. It charges via a USB port. It's very convenient in today's connected house. You can't go wrong with this little gem! " — Gasboy1029

Price: $64.99+ (available in two styles)

14. A lounge chair that will basically become your DNC (designated napping chair). It has a multi-position adjustable recline so you can find the ~perfect~ spot for your best naps.

The chair

Price: $114.99

15. A compressible hammock so you have a place to kick back and relax at your campsite. It's teeechnically big enough for two, but we don't need to tell anyone that, except maybe your dog.

A person sitting on a hammock

16. A portable environmental toilet , because hear me out — have you ever actually used community bathrooms at a campsite? Well, don't. Just poop in this toilet. It uses degradable bags that gel waste, neutralizes the stink, and starts the decaying process so it's actually really hygienic.

The toilet

Promising review: "Bought this for camping and it has worked beyond expectation.  It's easy to set up and take down, cleaner/neater than anticipated, and we can keep it in the car for roadside emergencies.  No more portapotties or rest stops. I even convinced friends and family to buy it too." — Anonymous

Price: $80.99

17. A cast-iron cookware set to make the *best* campfire omelette in existence.

A cast-iron skillet with noodles inside

Promising review:  "I bought these as a Father’s Day gift for my husband. He loves them! They have become our go-to cookware. The cast iron is easy to clean —ours is getting used daily and the cleanup is very easy. This is the first cast cookware either of us have owned/used." — Cast Iron Noobie

Price: $89.97 (originally $99.99)

18. A camp cot with a handy little organizer so you can keep all of your belongings nearby and easily accessible. By "belongings" I mean snacks. Just copious amounts of snacks in every pocket.

A person laying on a cot in a tent

Price: $79.99

19. A waterproof jacket for those annoyingly rainy hikes you definitely didn't plan for, but at least you're prepared for. Bonus: the cuffs are adjustable to help keep out the cold air while you trek along to the end of the trail. You can do it!

A person wearing a blush pink jacket on a hike

Price: $19.97+ (originally $39.99+, available in women's sizes S–2XL and 17 colors)

20. And finally, a generator for when your definition of "camping" is actually just glamping, and honestly I feel you on this. This portable bad boy delivers 4,500 starting watts and 3,650 running watts of power. That's *a lot* of episodes of Emily in Paris I could watch. Or, I could watch Wild and live vicariously through Reese Witherspoon hiking the PCT.

The generator

Price: $379.97

You to your friends now that you're definitely prepared:
