Ryder Hesjedal’s Tour de Victoria announces 2021 date

The ride around b.c.'s capital celebrates its tenth edition.

On Mar. 4, Ryder Hesjedal’s Tour de Victoria presented by Scotiabank announced that registration is open for the event’s 2021 iteration.

This year, the Tour de Victoria, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 2 in Victoria, B.C.

“We are really excited to welcome cyclists of all levels to enjoy a world class ride, featuring a traffic free lane for the day on the scenic roads of greater Victoria” says Tour director and two time Olympian, Seamus McGrath.

The Tour de Victoria is a fully supported event that aims to cater to cyclists of all ages and abilities. To help mark the tenth annual event, the ride will switch up a few elements this year. In addition to the seven distance options of previous years— 160km, 140km, 100km, 60km, 30km, 15km and Ryder’s Kids Ride—there will now be a 45km ride option.

All rides start and finish in the inner harbour of Victoria at the B.C. Legislative Buildings.

Monitoring the situation

The date of the event has been moved in accordance with the province of B.C.’s proposed vaccination schedule. McGrath says the Tour de Victoria will follow all rules set out by the B.C. Provincial Health Authority at the time. The organizers plan to they will continue to monitor all government regulations dictated by the B.C. Provincial Health Authority to ensure all safety precautions are followed to maintain a safe event.

“If we can’t do it safely, we will ride in 2022!” says McGrath.

Registering for the Tour

Super Early bird registration for the Tour de Victoria is now open, with prices that will stay in effect until April 30. Ryder Hesjedal’s Tour de Victoria is produced by Ryders Cycling Society of Canada, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting cycling across the country.

Cyclists took off in front of the legislature on Saturday morning for a ride across 10 municipalities in the capital region.

Ryder Hesjedal’s Tour de ­Victoria, in its 12th year, hit another attendance high, selling out all 2,450 available spots for routes that go up to 160 kilometres, said event director and Olympic cyclist Seamus McGrath.

McGrath said he doesn’t keep track of his times whenever he participates. “I just ride for the pure enjoyment.”

While some take the event seriously, Tour De Victoria is meant for people of all ages and abilities, he said.

“Our youngest rider is two. Our oldest rider is 90,” he said. “Everyone’s smiling. It’s such a positive event.”

All Tour de Victoria routes start and end near the B.C. legislature. Parts of Belleville Street were turned into a post-ride beer and burger garden, and a third of the legislature lawn was converted to bicycle parking. A DJ booth provided high-energy music.

“It’s Disneyland for cyclists,” said Kimberly Morrison, an event volunteer.

There were plenty of cycling families.

Kate Landreth reached the finish line on Saturday afternoon with her 21-month-old son Maxwell in the back, who was just waking up from a 30-kilometre nap.

Landreth said she was inspired after watching Maxwell’s dad ride the 100-kilometre event last year. “I wasn’t quite ready to ride, but I got motivated seeing a lot of moms riding,” she said.

Later that day, Julia Hincks jogged next to her three-year-old son Quinn, who was tackling the afternoon kids ride for the first time.

Hincks said she’d love to do a Tour de Victoria ride some day, but she’s happy to run with her child for now.

An announcer on site encouraged participants — most of whom were under the age of five — to go as many laps as they want on the route, which was about a block long.

“Try not to bump into each other, and have a great time,” he said. “As a rule, parents have to take their kids out for ice cream after the ride.”

At the start of the 30km ride.

Aware that I had done no road training at all, I only signed up for the 30 km bike ride. And I was still painfully nervous about it all. Thank you to Tami Tate who reminded me at the start line that this is a ride and not a race. And 30 seconds into the ride, I couldn’t have been more glad that I signed up for the ride.

The weather was perfect. The riders were so kind and friendly. The roads were safe and the route was beautiful. I chatted with parents of children who were riding and was amazed at the effort and ability of the young riders. I rode alongside riders of all ages who were completing all different lengths of the Tour de Victoria in various states of exhaustion and euphoria.

I loved every minute of it!

The tour was organized so well. There were so many volunteers helping and traffic control creating the most amazing riding experience. The 30 km route was beautiful, but not a riding challenge. I enjoyed the ride and to my husband’s chagrin, didn’t make it a race. My enthusiasm for the ride has spread and I have been collecting new riders at each and every bbq, gathering and relaxing afternoon on the dock at the lake. Next year it will be the 60 km ride or maybe even the 100km.

Since the Tour’s inception in 2011, more than 2,000 volunteers have become the force that produces one of the best-known cycling events in North America. By joining our crew, you’ll become one of the nearly 400 volunteers it takes to give our cyclists their best day in the saddle.

Our volunteers are the most valuable assets we have; you are the eyes, ears, hands and feet on the ground.

No cycling experience necessary.

We guarantee you’ll have fun, make new friends, and feel the pride of being the force behind the tour de victoria..
