Highly recommend Trafalgar

We recently took the Capitals of Scandinavia tour. Our tour director, Mike was excellent. He is knowledgeable, personable, professional, and friendly. Our driver, Tom, was also excellent. He drove us through 5 countries expertly. We definitely recommend Trafalgar. Wonderful trip!!

Best of Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg

The locations we visited were stunning, and the hotels and experiences were wonderful. The local guides were knowledgeable, professional, and generally guided us well, though they could have been a bit more attentive to the group's needs. However, the main guide we had for the tour seemed somewhat disconnected from the group as a whole. It felt as though he didn't fully appreciate or respect the Trafalgar travelers, as if we hadn't earned the right to be there. When we brought to his attention that some group members were struggling to keep up with his pace or wanted to take more time for photos, he simply continued at the same speed. At one point, he even lectured us on the coach, going so far as to play a podcast about gratitude and happiness. He also made it clear what he expected in terms of reviews and tips, discussing this three days before the tour was over, which felt inappropriate. I've taken many Trafalgar tours before and have always loved the experience, with guides and drivers who were attentive and accommodating. Unfortunately, this was my worst experience so far. It’s worth noting that this guide was not local and had no personal connection to the areas we visited, which may have impacted the experience. This is something I will consider for future trips.

Reply from Trafalgar Travel

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. We appreciate your continued patronage and are honoured that you have chosen Trafalgar for your travel needs. However, we are saddened to learn that your recent travel experience did not meet your expectations. A great Travel Director is essential to our guests' overall enjoyment and comfort on any of our trips. For this reason, we take great care in selecting our team members based on their in-depth knowledge of their assigned tasks. We are surprised that this may not have been what you experienced on this rare occasion. We assure you that your feedback has been shared with our Operations Manager for their attention and appropriate action in the future. We understand there may have been confusion regarding the Travel Director's comments about optional gratuities. Please know that tipping and our Travel Directors typically explain the gratuity process and suggest appropriate amounts to guests based on past feedback. However, we will review how this information is presented to ensure that it is respectful and appropriate in tone. Your feedback is invaluable to us and we are grateful for the opportunity to improve our services. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

We signed up for Grand Italian tour and…

We signed up for Grand Italian tour and put on a waitlist as told we would hear back in 7 days. Called and told it could be several weeks but they could switch us to different dates for more $$. Meanwhile they are still advertising for this trip!! Bait and switch. They just lost a potential customer as not organized. We are going back to Globus!

Date of experience : July 07, 2024

Thank you for your honest feedback. We apologise if there was any confusion regarding your booked tour. We are Trafalgar, and we offer our guests the option to hold their bookings for seven days without any obligation. This allows our clients to finalise their plans for future travel or make payments to secure their booking. Even if our tours appear as sold out on the website, we still provide the opportunity to join a waitlist for a space. We understand that plans can change, and if a booking is cancelled, we fill the vacant slot with a reservation from our waiting list. Thank you for your feedback.

Our Best of Holland Tour was Great!

Our Best of Holland Tour was great because we did one country with a enthusiastic, and knowledgeable Travel Director. Our driver was also a very nice man with a good sense of humor. The coach was spotless and comfortable. Our Travel Director was attentive, personable and gave us insights into this lovely country we would never have had if we had not taken this Trafalgar Tour. The included breakfasts were abundant and had something for everyone and the meals were nice too. We went to many cities and experienced both urban and scenic rural areas. I felt we were given a well rounded trip I will never forget. It was well worth the money.

We firmly believe every little detail matters and can create lasting impressions for our guests. We thank you for being our guest and hope to welcome you back again.

Worst on line company I have ever dealt…

Worst on line company I have ever dealt with. Did not explain things, said look at your flights without explaining that I would have to be staying an extra day with NO FREE Airport shuttle. After I had paid second instalment received 4 emails requesting payment …more concerned with $ than helping. Refused to post documents, even though I ad expressly asked…do NOT book directly, use a travel agent, who will explain, print out documents and HELP:

We understand that your experience with our Reservations team may not have been as satisfactory as we strive for, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. At Trafalgar, we want you to have as easy and convenient a journey as possible, so we offer airport transfers to and from your tour hotel on the first and last days of your itinerary for most destinations. If you arrive earlier or leave later than your scheduled itinerary dates, you can purchase your transfer from us, provided you've also bought your extra hotel night(s) through us. We appreciate your request for your travel documents to be printed and posted to your home address. Per our Treadright policy, we are constantly trying to reduce our carbon footprint. One way to do this is by providing our guests with electronic travel documents. Also, our Travel Director is responsible for handling all the travel details to ensure our guests have a stress-free vacation without worrying about the paperwork. We appreciate your trust in Trafalgar and thank you for being our guest.

Poor customer service

We have not commenced our Great European Tour to depart London on 19/5/24 and already have had poor customer service and disappointment. Our travel agent in Australia received an email stating that the hotel in London had changed. Our agent last October tried to reserve a room at The Tower Hotel but it was booked, so booked a room at Lalit within walking distance and non refundable. We now find out the new hotel, Thistle Marble is over 30mins away by taxi. The travel agent and I both requested either a shuttle or taxi to collect us but were rudely declined.

Date of experience : April 16, 2024

Thank you for sharing your review with us. We apologise that you are not satisfied with your pre-tour experience so far. We strongly recommend that you book your accommodations directly through us at Trafalgar. However, we understand that availability can be limited and may not always be possible. We understand your travel agent has attempted to secure a room at The Tower Hotel. However, if circumstances beyond our control require changes or if we can make improvements, we reserve the right to substitute hotels, as we have done in this instance. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. We are glad to hear that our Reservations team has been able to assist you with your travel requirements. We look forward to welcoming you on the tour.

I'd like a full refund

I'd like a full refund. On our first day, despite the fact that we were aware of additional extra's, we were forced by our Tour director to pay up front on that very day for additional extras as 'everybody does them' so he said. Most hotels were out of town so there was no restaurant choices should we have not been forced to take up the 'optional experience'. The food at the restaurants was certainly not worth the money we paid . The first was Dinner and Drive to Torpichen at 70.00 pound per person. We were supposed to have a Piper, but the hostess at the Restaurant told us that The Tour Director only paid for the cheap version so the Piper did not play. He was there waiting as a few of us had a chat with him. The hotels were pitiful and some only 3 star, one hotel we stayed in (Plymouth) had pubic hairs on the bathtub and bed bugs in the bed, the tiles were falling off the bathroom wall and there was mould on the ceiling. I sent photos to Trafalgar on Messenger but I have had nil response. Some hotels had no air-conditioning at all. Most comfort stops we were given 15 minutes, we would pull up and there would be another 4 bus loads of people with only 4 ladies toilets. very unacceptable. Additionally, on the bus the next day, we were forced to listed to a Podcast which lasted approximately 20 monutes, on 'gratefulness'. The tour director then advised us we would soon receive a survey which I also posted his comments in Messenger to Trafalgar, he advised us we should rate him 10, what a joke. The Tour director, then name some of the people who had completed their survey, I would have thought this was a breech of privacy?? We had previously completed two tours with another company with another company prior to joining this tour through the British Isles, we had NO complaints whatsoever.

Date of experience : June 13, 2024

Thank you for your feedback. We apologise for any disappointment caused during your tour. Please get in touch with our Guest Relations Department at [email protected] regarding the refund. Kindly provide the team with booking details and a complete account of your experience. Once again, we apologise for any disappointment.

Never will we travel with Trafalgar…

Never will we travel with Trafalgar again. Paid top price and got budget tour from Madrid to Barcelona bus tour. Very little stopping to take pictures and shown very little tourist attractions. All about going from start to finish and nothing in-between. So disappointed after travelling hard way around the world.

Date of experience : August 05, 2023

Thank you for your review. We hope you had the chance to immerse yourself in the Spanish culture during your trip and enjoyed the warmth and hospitality of the locals, the delicious cuisine and the country’s rich history, which is all unique to this beautiful country. However, we were concerned to learn that you felt certain aspects of the trip could have been improved. Exploring this beautiful country in a condensed amount of time can be quite an adventure, and we strive to include the perfect amount of time at each location for in-depth discovery; there are certain towns where we wish to stay longer. We have shared your feedback with our Operations team as we constantly strive to see where our itineraries can be improved. That said, we still hope you have taken some lasting highlights during your time away with us.

Never again with Trafalgar Tours

We booked a Splendors of Japan Tour with Trafalgar and my husband was medically unable to go. We gave them 3 months notice and had to write 23 emails and make over 12 calls to get a partial refund. Their service is so poor and the right hand does not know anything about the left hand. We would NEVER use them again and tell all our friends how poorly they treated us. We mostly received these automatic, "no reply" emails and when you actually speak to someone, they put you on hold several times, for a lengthy hold and have nothing to offer except lip service! Terrible business, terrible service and we booked, they never shared with us they would penalize us for canceling 3 months advance!

Date of experience : January 09, 2024

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your valuable feedback. We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge receipt of your concerns and express our apologies for the level of service you have received from our Contact Centre that did not meet your expectations. We would like to acknowledge the cancellation you submitted three months prior to your scheduled travel date. We understand that you are aware of our booking conditions, which stipulate the industry standard cancellation fees. We cannot investigate the conditions surrounding your booking as we need your booking information. We are committed to providing our customers with the highest level of service. As such, our Guest Relations Department would be happy to assist you with any necessary documentation required to claim your travel insurance. Once again, we would like to thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.

Incredible week in Tuscany on the Rome…

Incredible week in Tuscany on the Rome and Tuscan highlights tour. We loved our travel director Tyson, so knowledgeable and full of stories. The hotel in Montecatini was an excellent location, steps away from the town square. We also enjoyed the relaxed pace of the trip. Would do this trip again in a heartbeat.

We value your excellent feedback. Thank you for choosing to travel with us at Trafalgar. Planning and saving to book a vacation is a significant investment. Our teams are dedicated to creating and bringing to life the most amazing trips for our guests, so we are thrilled to hear that this has been reflected in your experience. It was our pleasure to host you, and we look forward to welcoming you again.

Best of the Canyonlands

My husband and I went on the Best of the Canyonlands - Denver to Las Vegas. It was such a great trip. I enjoyed getting time to hike around the national parks and getting to see so many parks in just a week! And my favorite location was Monument Valley. An absolutely stunning place - the colors, landscape and rich history. It was nice being able to get to all these places and not have to plan the driving ourselves. Can't wait to try out another destination - next on my list is the Northeast!

Thank you for being our guest and sharing your feedback with us. It is always wonderful to hear back from our valued guests and know you have enjoyed your journey with us. Our teams constantly strive to curate and bring to life the most amazing trips for our guests, and so it's great to hear that this has come across. Furthermore, we're happy that like-minded people and our professional team accompanied you.

Trafalgar overcharged us for pre paid…

Trafalgar charged us for pre paid gratuities. Suggest you don’t pay these in advance to Trafalgar. We found Trafalgar asked for almost NZ$80 ( allowing for local currency exchange rate) more than the tour leader and driver expected or would have got. So far Trafalgar hasn’t responded to our request for a refund of the overpayment. Also the ‘included’ meals at local venues were very poor quality with the exception of one. Only one hotel had air conditioning. Very few USB charge points on the bus worked. However The tour itinerary and tour leader were great.

Traveled all night USA to Fr

Traveled all night USA to Fr, can’t wait to get to see the hotel to freshen up and do some sightseeing. When I arrive with 4 pieces of luggage, at 9am, I am told, with an attitude, check in is 2pm, so here I am sitting in the lobby with my luggage, my very, very costly vacation is already ruined, never again

Date of experience : September 24, 2023

Thank you for your review. We are sorry that during your booking process, you were not well informed that the official check-in times vary from hotel to hotel. Should your flight arrive in the early morning into the city where your trip begins, you may find yourself arriving at the hotel before noon, and it could be early afternoon before your room is ready (Two pm or Three pm). Hotels try to prevent this from happening, but check-in times cannot be guaranteed. The hotel can suggest how any spare time could be used to sightsee, relax or enjoy local restaurants while your room is being prepared. When arriving at your first hotel, check in at the main reception desk. The reception staff will need to know your name and that you are travelling with Trafalgar. When your trip begins, check-in will be managed by the Travel Director, who will advise you on procedures and hotel features before arrival. They will secure keys and oversee the delivery of your luggage to your room. Thank you for choosing Trafalgar as your travel partner, and we hope that you have an unforgettable travel experience.

Dont risk your money with Trafalgar

Trafalgar cancelled our tour booking without our consent because I asked about if there was availability on another tour. Never did they mention that enquiring about another tour they cancel your existing booking. Now the tour is full and I have spent $18,000 on Qantas airfares and accom. Tour booked in Jan 2023 for Sept 2023 tour. Nobody takes responsible and nobody will call me to discuss. Family of 4 holiday ruined,.

DO NOT RECOMMEND!!

DO NOT RECOMMEND!!! Trafalgar cancelled my trip too Santa Fe (which is understandable and accepted as their may not have been enough people booking, or COVID or whatever). The 90-100 days quoted to get a refund for the trip the company cancelled is NOT ACCEPTABLE. It has now been six weeks and Trafalgar still has my $3300. Calls to the service center take HOURS on hold. Horrible customer service. Horrible refund policy. Definitely disappointed.

Trafalgar Tours really let us down on…

Trafalgar Tours really let us down on our South American trip. Poorly spoken guides, dirty busses , a very dangerous bus ride and a very boring itinerary with very few extras on offer. The Peru portion was great but the Chille, Brazil portion was very poor and the only reason why we enjoyed Argentina was because we had been to Buenos Aires a few times. The guide in Bariloche was seagull and uninspiring. I have done many trips with Trafalgar and Insight and this one was seriously lacking. What was even more disappointing is I wrote in my review all the complaints and no one apologised or adressed the issues hence my review here.

Date of experience : November 01, 2023

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We appreciate your input and apologise for any inconvenience you may have experienced. Please provide us with your booking information so we can investigate what happened with your booking. We always strive to offer our customers the highest level of service, and our Guest Relations Department is available to assist you with any inquiries or concerns. Please don't hesitate to email our Guest Relations Department at [email protected].

Latest adventure was US National Parks

I have traveled on 3 Trafalgar tours and have enjoyed all of them. (first was Italy in 2019, second one was Croatia in 2023) I just completed my first USA trip with them and had a fantastic group, driver, and tour director. Hotels were great given the parks we were visiting, mainly in Utah. We had easy access to food/shopping nearby. Lodging is limited in many national park areas due to their remoteness. My favorite was actually the one Best Western in Moab. Perfect location so we could walk and explore, plus the staff were so sweet and attentive. Timings to get the most out of our time in the parks worked smoothly and often we had extra time to do longer hikes/walks. Guessing that would depend on the group, but we had a younger mix. I especially loved the Navajo lunch experience during our time in Monument Valley, that steak was pure perfection and what a beautiful setting we had all to ourselves. Being able to see Arches, Canyonlands, Monument Valley, Bryce, and Zion in a week was ideal and has given me ideas for future trips.

Thank you for being our guest. We enjoyed reading your review and are pleased to know that you enjoyed all aspects of the tour. We continually strive to provide the best travel experience for our guests, and we are glad that this was evident during your tour. We hope to welcome you back on tour with us again.

Will never travel with Trafalgar again

Will never travel with Trafalgar again. Just got back from the Contrasts of Australia and New Zealand trip that started Apr 11 2024. The Australia portion was great, but when we got to New Zealand they added more people to the tour, many of whom were sick and hacking, coughing, and sneezing. The Tour Director did not mandate or issue effective masks to the sick people (the few who wore a mask wore cloth) and since he insisted on a mandatory seat rotation plan, the sick people just kept moving around the bus exposing everyone. I ended up getting Covid from one or more of them!! Fortunately it happened towards the end of the trip. Thought i was coming down with a cold but tested when I got home and tested positive twice. I’ve notified Trafalgar with no response. Also for solo travelers…don’t count on getting your own seat, Trafalgar will put you with someone else so you are rubbing up against some stranger for 3-9 hours every day on the bus. Priority for single seats will go to overweight people who don’t fit on their half of the seat. When we asked the Tour Director to make sure it was fair and to rotate the singles through the single seats, he wouldn’t. Having said all that, the Australian Tour Director was wonderful and all the hotels were very good!

Date of experience : April 10, 2024

Thank you for providing us with feedback regarding your recent travel experience. We appreciate that you opted for the single supplement rate as a solo traveller. However, this rate does not guarantee a single-person seat on the coach. We follow a daily seat rotation system that allows all guests to enjoy scenic views and get to know their fellow travellers. At Trafalgar, we prioritise the health and safety of our guests. We take the cleanliness and ventilation of our coaches seriously and have implemented measures to ensure they are well-maintained. While our Travel Directors will advise unwell guests to wear masks, we cannot force them to act responsibly. We understand that preventing the spread of illnesses can be challenging. Therefore, we request guests take responsibility while travelling by carrying personal protective equipment and sanitisers they may require. This information is also communicated to guests before the travel date when we provide them with their final documents. Thank you for your review; we hope you have fully recovered.

Best of Italy Tour for 13 days, really 11 days. Recommendation: Do NOT take a Trafalgar Tour of any kind!

Best of Italy Tour for 13 days--actually 12 days. This was our 2nd Trafalgar tour--1st was Egypt---also terrible! 1) Could ONLY understand about 10 % of the travel director's harangue. Her name was Frederica. The same situation occurred in Egypt. 2) The bus driver named Theo was surly and rude. 3) The Travel Director constantly sold the extra excursions. These were 2.5 times more expensive then privately-made tours. Example in Rome--Crown Tours. 4) The food was terrible. 5) The hotels were at best 2-3 star. NO AC, low water pressure, and the breakfasts were poor. 6) Many hours were spent most days on the bus--4-8 hours. There were 49 passengers on this bus! You could not relax on the bus because the tour director constantly was speaking and selling optional excursions. Again, could not understand but 10 % of what she said. 7) We pre-paid gratuities, but wished that we had not done so. Neither the driver nor Travel Director thanked us. We will not prepay again, however, we will NEVER take another Trafalgar Tour.

Date of experience : October 27, 2023

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. We value your honest opinion and are sorry to hear that certain aspects of your trip did not meet your expectations. Our On The Road Team is integral to ensuring our guests have an enjoyable and comfortable experience during their travels. We carefully select team members who are passionate about travel and possess extensive knowledge of their respective regions. We are disappointed that your experience did not reflect this. Your feedback has been shared with our Operations Manager, and appropriate measures will be taken. We understand that our guests appreciate having the freedom to explore and engage with the local culture, which is why we provide a range of Optional Experiences. These experiences are designed to enhance our guests' understanding of the places we visit and are separate from the itinerary. Our Contracting Department ensures that our accommodations are of a four-star standard or higher. We apologise if the hotel standards did not meet your expectations. Similarly, we apologise for any disappointment caused by the meals provided during your trip. We appreciate that the cuisine of Italy is world-renowned, and we will investigate your feedback to ensure we offer only the best to our clients. We understand that the long coach rides may have been tiring, but we hope that the unique attractions outlined in the itinerary made up for it. Our luxury coaches can accommodate up to 52 guests, although we typically have an average of 40-48 guests. However, if additional space is required, our sister company, Insight Vacations, offers specially reconfigured coaches with only 40 seats, providing business-class legroom. A Classic Insight Vacations tour has a maximum of 40 travellers, whereas their Small Group departures have just 24. We understand that guests may have different preferences when it comes to gratuities. Therefore, we offer the option to prepay gratuities or pay during the trip. We appreciate your feedback and will use it to improve our future departures. We hope to host you again and provide an authentic Trafalgar experience.

Matt Godman and our bus driver Raymond…

Matt Godman and our bus driver Raymond were amazing. Everything ran like clock work even when there are so many variables (traffic/weather). They worked together as a team so well. Trafalgar is so good at preparing you for the experience. They dot the "i's" and cross the "t's". They tell you what to bring for the weather. The give your options to do extras to gain the full culture of the place you are going. We wanted to go to Ireland and Scotland in one fell swoop and check the box without having the drive or plan. This trip was it. The cost is right in line with the value. We are experienced American travelers who've also lived in Switzerland for a period of time. This is not our first rodeo. For many on the trip, it was their first rodeo, and some of them were older with limited physical capabilities. We are 55 and 60 but are in great physical condition for our ages. Matt, our host, handled all of us with great detail and care. If you are limited in physical capabilities, they handle it well, but it is important for you to also realize what you cannot do and not penalize them. They do what they do really well, and we will never forget this experience.

Date of experience : July 09, 2024

We appreciate your great review. We understand that planning and saving for a long time to book a lifetime vacation is a significant investment. Our team is committed to providing our valued guests with unparalleled travel experiences. We are also pleased to know that our On the Road Team has added significantly to your journey and is a valuable asset to our company. Your feedback is greatly appreciated and will not go unnoticed.

Set sail from Hirtshals across the Skagerrak to the port of Kristiansand in Norway. A 48 Hour Guide to Astrakhan, Russia

Baskunchak salt lake, Astrakhan region, Russia

Travellers who venture into Astrakhan will enjoy the historical charm and cultural vibrancy of this old Silk Route town. The otherworldly Lake Baskunchak and extensive Delta wetlands are just a day trip away.

Astrakhan lies close to the Kazakhstan border where the Volga River flows into the Caspian Sea. It used to be a town on the old Silk Route and is built on more than 10 islands. Meander along canals and over bridges to soak up ancient Tatar, Christian and Islamic history. Venture into the surrounding countryside to enjoy the splendour of the Volga Delta wetlands and the region’s natural beauty.

Day one – Acquaint yourself with the city

Morning – Explore local history

Start the day by taking a walk through the Kryusha Quarter. It’s the city’s former Tatar and Persian area, and it remains a predominantly Muslim area. As such, there are clusters of mosques in various states of neglect and repair.

Starting at Ulitsa Kirova, walk along Kazanskaya Ulitsa until you reach a Lenin bust. If you cross over the canal, you’ll come across a well-kept park, complete with sculptures and a lake. Continue past it, and you’ll end up at the foot of the hill where the city’s Kremlin sits on top. A UNESCO World Heritage site with inviting gardens and temporary exhibitions, the Kremlin is not to be missed.

Pro tip: The Kryusha Quarter is fascinating to walk through, but it is still a little rough. It is fine to walk through during the day, but it is best to avoid it at night.

Once you’re finished at the Kremlin, cut through the Fraternal Gardens to the city’s hipster hangout, Rozmarin Cafe , and fill up on freshly cooked meals and refuel with strong coffee. Once revived, take a peek at the Museum of Military Glory, which is as patriotic as the name suggests. However, despite the museum’s nationalistic slant, it is a good place to learn about historical battles.

Afterwards, it is worth walking over to Moloko, a hip, modern canteen-style café, which is run by the same people as Rozmarin Cafe. Even if you’re still full from lunch, they are licensed. So, why not have a cheeky afternoon drink and a snack?

From Moloko , it’s another lazy stroll along the banks of the Kutum River to the banks of the Volga – the manicured riverfront is the city’s crowning glory. There are people to watch, sculptures to see, and sunsets to enjoy.

Evening – Enjoy riverside views

After all of that walking about, treat yourself to a delicious meal. Right on the waterfront, Yamato is an indulgent, top-notch Japanese restaurant. The menu offers Japanese dishes, sushi, pan-Asian and Asian-fusion meals, as well as a lot of classic European and Russian cuisine. And it’s not just the food that is good here – so is the decor, inspired by Japanese minimalism and traditional aesthetics.

Pro tip: Yamato is popular. Book a reservation or be prepared to wait for a little while.

Astrakhan Kremlin, which includes the Cathedral of the Assumption, is a UNESCO-listed must-see

Night – Embrace the local culture

For those who want to sample some high-brow culture, why not check out what ballet is showing? The Astrakhan State Theatre of Opera and Ballet may not have the same clout as other regional theatres, but like most ballet and opera in Russia, they are still done to an outstanding standard.

For those who want to kick on, take the short stroll over to Kul’tovyy Bar (Cult Bar) for dim lighting, live music and boozy drinks. It also serves reasonably priced food. After loading up on positive vibes, belt out a few tunes with new friends at any of the many karaoke bars in town, such as Chicago House.

Whatever time the night ends, rest your well-worn legs at the luxurious Novomoskovskaya Hotel , a 10-minute walk away from Kul’tovyy Bar. Sleeping options are limited in Astrakhan, but they are also affordable, which means this five-star hotel comes with a bargain price tag. It’s also right in the heart of the city, so the Kremlin and the central sights are all within walking distance.

Day two – Soak up the Astrakhan region’s beauty

Morning – Venture out to the great outdoors

Although the city still has plenty to offer, a trip to the surrounding countryside is a must. Around Astrakhan , the Volga River splinters off into thousands of streams and rivers, known as the Volga Delta Wetlands. The wetlands, filled with birds and animals, are lush and an adventure to explore.

Roads eventually peter out and make way for rivers and marshes. The further you explore the wetlands, the more likely you’ll need a boat. A trip into the wetlands is a day trip in itself, so don’t plan to cram too many countryside sights into your itinerary.

Pro tip: Many tour companies offer trips into the wetlands, so shop around to find a deal that you like. Parts of the area are protected, so tourists need a permit. Tourist agencies in Astrakhan can help you organise these. Procosta is a tour company that offers trips into the delta with a guide, and only Procosta tours can be taken without one of these permits.

Afternoon – Float in salty water

An alternative day trip is to Lake Baskunchak, near the Kazakhstan border. One of Russia’s major salt basins, it supplies the nation with approximately 80 percent of its salt. Back in the day, people used to flock here to reap the health benefits of the salty water and the clay, and legend has it that it is a place of healing. Despite, or because of, its otherworldly appearance and its far-flung locale, it remains a popular tourist destination, albeit an unusual one.

A swim in the lake is comparable to a dip in the Dead Sea , although many swimmers bring shoes because prickly salt covers the bottom of the lake-bed. The lake used to be an important stop on the Silk Route, as its seemingly endless supply of salt has long been a precious commodity.

Pro tip: Make sure you pack a picnic, plenty of fresh water and sunscreen because there aren’t any trees around the lake.

Evening – Feast on traditional dishes

All that country air will induce hunger that must be satiated. So, head straight to Mindal (which translates to Almond) to feast on steaming hot Georgian khachapuri and Uzbek pilaf and other drool-inducing dishes. A top restaurant in town, Mindal serves up hearty central Asian and Caucasian dishes in a casual, yet stylish setting – a perfect treat to end a long day spent on the road and in the great outdoors.

Night – Relax with a beer

Mindal has a licensed bar that also serves up hookahs, so if you are suffering from a post-pigout food coma, and are exhausted from the day, hang around and enjoy yourself for a little bit longer. But if you want a change of scenery, visit Akademiya Piva, (Beer Academy). This restaurant and brewery is not only a stumble away from the hotel, but it is an opportunity to try a local brew or two. Of their five house-made beers, one is brewed in the style of the iconic Soviet beer, Zhigulevskoye.

Pro tip: If you want to relax after dinner at Mindal, book a booth table and make yourself comfortable. Also, for those on a budget, Akademiya Piva serves pub grub at a reasonable price.
