Carnival expands social media for cruise passengers

Soon you’ll be able to get online during your Carnival cruise for just $5 a day — if all you want to do is post pictures to social media.

The packages are available on 13 of Carnival’s 24 ships now. If purchased for a seven-day cruise, the social media plans cost $25. Carnival Cruise Line says its new social media Internet packages will be available on all ships by the first quarter of 2016. The plans give passengers unlimited access to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Pinterest and other sites.

“Fast, affordable and reliable social media channels and the Internet have become essential on today’s cruise ships,” said Gabriela Gonzalez, Carnival’s vice president of guest technology. To surf more websites, you’ll need a “value” Internet plan for $16 daily that includes unlimited access. For $25 a day, Carnival has a “premium” package with a faster connection and video-calling capabilities through sites such as Skype.

Additionally, the cruise line’s new mobile app — Carnival HUB — enables passengers to exchange messages with other passengers for $5 for the entire cruise. Information about the ship’s features and happenings are free of charge through the app.

Carnival Cruise Line’s new social media Internet packages – which offer access to a variety of popular Web sites for just $5 a day – are now available on more than half of the line’s ships with fleetwide implementation scheduled by the first quarter of 2016.

Additionally, the line’s new mobile app – currently available on Carnival Breeze and offering an innovative “chat” feature – has been very well received with a third of the ship’s guests actively using the app during their cruise.  The app is expected to be available on five additional ships by the end of the year and be fleetwide by summer 2016.

“Fast, affordable and reliable social media channels and the Internet have become essential on today’s cruise ships,” said Gabriela Gonzalez, Carnival’s vice president of guest technology.  “We have thoughtfully approached this area to ensure we are providing options that guests sailing throughout our fleet find truly valuable and reliable,” she added.

Currently available on 13 ships, Carnival’s enhanced Internet access offers dramatically increased bandwidth and speed while the cruise industry’s first social media package provides unlimited access to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Pinterest and other popular sites for just $5 per day with discounted plans available for the entire cruise.

Unlike other shipboard Internet packages, Carnival’s social media package is unique in that it allows guests a convenient, flexible and highly affordable option for updating their favorite social media channels during their cruise at one low price.

There’s also a “value” plan that includes unlimited access to the Web for checking email, sports scores, weather updates and a wide range of other applications, and a “premium” package that provides the fastest available connection speed and allows access to video calling sites like Skype.

The new Carnival HUB mobile app currently on Carnival Breeze provides guests with a convenient, at-a-glance view of the ship’s many facilities and features along with updates on events and happenings taking place on board, all available free of charge. Available for download at the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, the app also includes an innovative “chat” feature that allows guests to exchange messages with their traveling companions using their mobile devices for a flat fee of $5 for the entire cruise.

The app also includes day-by-day schedules of hundreds of on-board events, information on food and beverage venues, searchable deck plans, itinerary details, Sail & Sign account balance and more. Recently added options include the ability to pre-purchase the line’s Cheers! and Bottomless Bubbles beverage programs and upload photos to be displayed on Carnival Breeze’s 270-square-foot Seaside Theatre during the voyage. As you know, we are HUGE fans of Carnival and I think they are one of the top travel brands out there that really understands how social media and the travel industry have come together to extend the experience that most people will only be able to experience for a few days each year, into something that they plan, dream, and remember all year long.

How has Social Media Changed the traditional "PR" business?

The PR business has changed tremendously from just three to four years ago. A lot of consumers get their information not just from traditional media, so we've had to start working with bloggers/influencers to help us get our messaging and news out. Social media has also allowed our guests to be an extension of marketing strategy, when they post pictures of their vacations and talk about what a great time they're having.

When did Carnival start thinking about creating "social" vs just "traditional media" programs?

We have had a presence in the social media world for a few years now and were one of the first cruise lines with a social media presence. What we try to do is develop not just individual social and traditional media programs, but work together to make sure those programs intertwine cohesively.

What are you looking for when you pick people to work with on social campaigns?

We look for bloggers/influencers with strong and solid social media followings that produce great content. Numbers are important, but you can have a great niche blogger that might not have a huge following with a solid and reputable voice in their area of expertise. Quality is also a big factor, no matter how big an influencers' numbers might be, if the quality of their work is poor, not many brands will want to work with them. Also, "bought" followers are a big no-no, brands can spot bloggers who partake in those types of practices and it only hurts the bloggers' chances of working with a brand then help them.

Blog:   Carnival’s Triumph Crisis Shows Value of Social Media

When an engine fire left Carnival Cruise Lines’ Triumph drifting in the Gulf of Mexico for several days last month, the story swept across social media, even causing the hashtag #cruisefromhell to trend on Twitter.

As the Triumph disaster unfolded in real-time, Carnival’s response demonstrated how social media can be an important asset during such a crisis. Carnival did many things right. But the company was too slow in launching a social media response, most notably on Twitter. That crippled Carnival’s opportunity to participate in the social media discussion from the moment it started.

“Well aware of the potential fallout, Carnival Cruises’ crisis team has sprung into action,” AdAge ’s Rich Thomaselli wrote on the same day that the Triumph finally reached port in Mobile, Alabama. Thomaselli observed that Carnival “has been consistently updating its Facebook page, which has more than 2 million likes” and “is also using two Twitter feeds (@CarnivalCruise and @CarnivalPR) to issue updates.”

The Groundwork for Success

Crisis expert Melissa Agnes said that the company “did a thorough and sincere job at communicating with their audience throughout this crisis on their social media channels.” Social media expert Allison Matherly even heard about the incident for the first time from Carnival’s lengthy statement on Facebook. “It put out the facts and needed information,” she writes. “In fact, I didn’t feel the need to read about the situation from another news source.” Carnival, Matherly observed, is “not only being transparent about the situation, but they are actively talking about it.”

Without such an established online presence, Carnival would likely have found itself in a situation not unlike the Triumph, stranded and powerless in a sea of viral outrage. This event is an excellent example of why it is important to have an extensive social media structure in place before a crisis hits.

Room for Improvement

Carnival did many things right, but some saw ways the company failed to capitalize on the full potential of social media. Carnival “could have turned its Triumph crisis into a social media success, but it did not,” according to Skift’s Samantha Shankman. She points out that the company’s “Twitter account didn’t kick into high gear until Thursday, four days after the Carnival Triumph engine fire” and, after the ship reached port, “both Facebook and Twitter went silent until Tuesday, February 19.” The Build Network expressed a similar perspective: “Loved ones monitoring social media for official updates from the company found radio silence on Facebook and Twitter.”

In a CNN opinion piece, David Bartlett, a senior vice president of crisis and issues management and strategic communications firm Levick, offers some good advice on how Carnival could have done a better job. In addition to showing that it was sincerely concerned and working to fix the problem, Bartlett says, Carnival should have “aggressively and clearly deliver these messages now, and for as long as it takes to restore the public’s trust.”

What Else Could Carnival Have Done?

The media focused far less on Carnival’s social media response than on the anger tweeted, posted and otherwise shared by customers and the general public. That could have been different.  As The Build posted in a sidebar to their piece:

“Imagine if the  Triumph crew had posted video of people spontaneously helping one another aboard the distressed vessel? Would this have changed the conversation about Carnival during the crisis? Yes.
“Online video has already become one of the most powerful tools in the crisis manager’s arsenal, yet many fail to fully realize the real-time ability of video integrated with Twitter to break through a crowded online conversation,” writes Dallas Lawrence, chief global digital strategist for Burson-Martseller, in a Mashable blog post. “The question every crisis manger should be asking today is this: If you had a significant crisis occur on a Friday evening, how long would it take you to shoot, edit, and tweet a video response?””

But don’t worry. Carnival Cruises offers onboard Internet packages of different prices and quality. Depending on your preferences, these include social media, value, and premium packages.

But hold on! These packages are expensive and unsuitable for streaming videos or other high-bandwidth activities. So, before purchasing, knowing what you’re getting and what you need is important.

How Much Do Carnival Wifi Packages Cost?

Carnival offers different WiFi packages based on your needs and preferences. Each package has its charges and speeds.

The packages range from $12.75 per day to $30 per day. Prices may vary depending on the type of cruise and the duration of the cruise.

But you can also opt for the full vacation WiFi package, which costs less. I highly recommend this option as I’ve personally used it.

Amazingly, there’s also a bonus from Carnival: if you buy any package before boarding, you’ll get a 15% discount as a gift. Remember, you must purchase before getting on board to avail of this offer.

What Are The Available Carnival Wifi Packages?

Carnival WiFi offers three different internet packages depending on your needs. These are social, value, and premium.

1- The Social Plan

If you’re someone like me and love constantly uploading on social media, there’s a specific plan just for your needs: the “social” plan.

With this option, you’ll have access to various social media platforms, enabling you to stay connected with friends and share your cruise experiences.

Keep in mind that you can’t make video calls on this plan. I faced a major misunderstanding, but now I’m sharing this insight with you so that you can stay informed.

The popular social package also allows access to popular airline sites, enabling you to check in for your flight towards the end of your cruise.

The price of this social plan is $15 per day. But if you purchase it before boarding, it will cost you $12.75 per day.

The entire cruise costs $89.25 (pre-purchase). Most importantly, buying a 24-hour pass for the Social Wi-fi plan is impossible.

  • Allow usage for Snapchat, FaceBook Messenger, WhatsApp, and other platforms

2- The Value Plan

The Value Plan is for people who enjoy browsing their favorite websites while accessing social media during the cruise.

So, if you’re someone needing to check Linkedin, emails, or handle other important stuff on websites, the Value Plan is your go-to. Its cost after boarding is $20, but if purchased beforehand, it’s only $17. For a 7-day cruise, it totals $119.

It’s also available as a 24-hour pass, priced at $22 per day. Unfortunately, video or music streaming is not supported by this plan.

3- The Premium Plan

The Premium Plan is the top tier offering from Carnival Cruise, providing faster and broader service compared to the Social and Value packages.

Its major advantage lies in access to video and music streaming. It also supports video calling on platforms like Skype and Zoom, wherever coverage allows.

This package is available before boarding for $18.70 per person per day. However, if you purchase it after boarding, the price increases to $22 daily. For a seven-day trip, the total cost would amount to $130.90

For the 24-hour pass, the daily costs rise to $30. This could save you money if you only need access on specific days.

Are There Different Speed Options With Carnival WiFi Packages?

Yes. Each Carnival Cruise WiFi package offers different speeds. The Premium plan stands out as the fastest service, providing speeds up to three times faster than the Social and Value plans.

I opted for the Premium plan during my cruise, and its speed was truly impressive. I experienced no connection problems while video and music streaming or conducting video calls. It delivered an excellent performance overall.

While the Value Plan does offer decent speed, it doesn’t come closer to the Premium plan. Also, the Value Plan doesn’t support video calls and streaming due to its lower bandwidth.

How Fast Is The Internet On Carnival Cruise?

The internet speed on Carnival Cruise ships can vary. It depends on where the ship is, how many people are using it, and the internet plan you bought. 

You might not get super-fast speeds like at home, but it works okay for basic things like social media or emails. 

Newer ships have better Internet, up to 1-2 mbps on older ones and 8-10 mbps on newer ones, especially those with Starlink.

The problem isn’t just speed; it’s also about “latency.” This is around 40-60 milliseconds at home, but on regular ship Wi-Fi, it’s slower at about 700 milliseconds. This causes buffering and frustration.

On Starlink-equipped ships, I tested and found faster speeds of around 35 milliseconds. This made watching Netflix and Amazon Prime smooth without any issues.

If your room is on a lower deck, like Cove Balconies , you might have a slower internet speed compared to upper decks because of better satellite communication. So, consider that when choosing your cabin if you and yours care about internet speed.

Can You Call Home?

If you have the Premium Plan, you can make calls to your love ones and home using apps like FaceTime audio, Skype, or WhatsApp. 

If your phone can make calls over WiFi, you can use that feature with the Premium Plan. I use T-Mobile, and I put my phone on airplane mode when I get on the ship. 

Then, I turn on the T-Mobile WiFi so my phone works like a normal phone using the ship’s Internet. WiFi calling doesn’t use your cell data, just the Internet. AT&T also has WiFi calling.

Can I Purchase Carnival WiFi Packages Before the Cruise?

Yes. Purchasing a Carnival WiFi package before the cruise is the best time, as you get a 15% discount on every plan.

I also purchased the Premium Plan before boarding, which costs me $18.70 per day instead of $22.

Is There a Carnival WiFi Device Limit?

Carnival Cruise WiFi typically has a restriction on the number of devices connected to a single WiFi package at a time. However, this limit depends on the specific package purchased.

Some packages are to be connected at a time, while others could allow multi-device to be connected concurrently. 

The package I purchased only provides Internet to a single device at a time. If someone else was using my package, I could disconnect their access when I logged in. With this feature, I could control the device linked to my WiFi package.

Can You Use a VPN On Carnival Cruise WiFi?

I know many people are concerned about VPN usage, especially on using public Wi-Fi. So that’s something really important to know on cruise ships. But Carnival Cruise line does say that they are safe and secure. 

However, most cruise ships do not allow you to use a VPN on cruise ship WiFi. 

However, Norwegian Cruise Line allows VPN usage on their WiFi. However, I’m unsure whether it works for all their plans or the only premium one.

Are There Any Free Wifi Access Points Onboard A Carnival Cruise?

Carnival Cruise Line typically offers internet access through their WiFi packages, but there are several tricks you can use to access free WiFi points.

During my cruise, a lot of people were searching for a free WiFi spot, and some of my fellows were asking me to turn on my WiFi hotspot.

From all these experiences, I’ve compiled a list of ways to access free WiFi without purchasing it. 

  • Ask your fellow cruiser to share device WiFi (If he has purchased the package)
  • Search for the local restaurant with a free WiFi spot
  • Take help from Crew members
  • Walk up to the open decks to pick up a signal from the local area or port
  • Look for the Bars with Free WiFi in Port

The Alternative Of Carnival Cruise Line Wi-Fi: Carnival Hub App

Back in 2015, Carnival Cruise Line introduced the HUB app. At first, it lets guests do simple stuff like reading a digital Fun Times, checking account balances, and seeing the weather at ports.

Spend $5 for the whole cruise on the Carnival Hub app for chatting with onboard friends and family.

Now, the app does a lot more:

  • Complete cruise check-in
  • Begin the mandatory muster drill
  • Order food for delivery to most spots on the ship
  • Read restaurant menus and make dining reservations
  • View ship maps
  • Chat with cruise companions
  • Purchase things such as shore excursions, drink packages, and wifi packages

You can grab the app from the Google Play Store or iTunes. Getting it before you board to dodge hefty fees from your cell phone provider is a good idea.

You don’t have to buy the Internet to use the app.

How Do You Avoid Mobile Phone Charges At Sea?

The simplest way is to put your phone in “airplane mode.” Then, go to your device settings and turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. This way, your smartphone can still connect with your other devices. 

It’s a good idea to tell your friends and family that you’re doing this. Just in case they need to reach you while you’re away.

How To Join Carnival Wi-Fi Packages?

Getting Wi-Fi on the ship is easy. 

Just check your laptop or personal device’s Wi-Fi settings. You’ll see a list of available networks. Look for “Carnival Vista Wi-Fi” or “Carnival Guest Wi-Fi.” 

Choose that network. Once connected, a window will pop up asking for your folio number and date of birth. Enter those, then click login. 

After that, click confirm, and you’re online. If you’re using a laptop and don’t see the prompts, open your browser and go to carnivalwifi.com. If you have trouble connecting, Guest Services can help you out.

Does Carnival Use Starlink, And Why Should I Care?

Carnival is rolling out Starlink Internet across its ships, offering a better onboard Internet experience.

Starlink, Elon Musk’s project, provides faster Internet using satellite technology at lower costs and higher speeds.

Many cruise lines, including Carnival, upgrade their onboard Internet using Starlink. It theoretically offers faster speeds than older cruise ship Internet. However, cruise IT departments manage speeds to ensure stability when many passengers are online.

On my recent cruise, the onboard Internet was upgraded to Starlink. For the first time, I stopped complaining about slow download speeds. It wasn’t lightning-fast, but it was more stable and less frustrating. Upload speed had also improved.

If you’ve had issues with cruise Wi-Fi before, check if your ship has switched to Starlink before purchasing Wi-Fi.

No, Carnival’s WiFi isn’t on sale or discounted regularly. However, they offer a 15% discount if you purchase the WiFi package before boarding.

How Reliable Is The WiFi Connection Provided By Carnival Cruise?

Carnival Cruise Line claims its WiFi is safe and secure, but its reliability can vary. It’s generally okay for basic tasks, but streaming might not be smooth. Remember that it might not be as secure or consistent as you’re used to at home.

I'm going on my first cruise with my boyfriend and his family next spring. This will be my first time out of the country (aside from Canada, which is a ferry ride away). My mom is very worried about me, and I'd like to make this as easy as possible for, as she is also staying at hour house watching our dog and cat. I know that the main social media apps will work, including the WhatsApp. I just want to make sure that the calling feature on the app will also work, and not just the chat feature?

I used the WhatsApp calling feature on my last cruise. It worked fine as well as the chat feature. This way your mom can be in constant contact with you while you are on your vacation.

Thank you so much! This will make her worry a tad bit less. We are only going to be in Port 3 of the 7 days, and it's not worth getting the cell plan for Mexico for just those days as it is expensive.

it might depend on what ship you are on. i used whatsapp on the pride to keep in touch with my mother in law who was watching our kids. i had the value plan because i also needed access to the internet during the cruise. the call feature did not work on the whatsapp when i tried to call home. the chat worked fine and i could record a message and send it like a voice mail and then in return get voice mail messages back, but no calling. so i upgraded to the premium package and that also did not work with the call feature. i used the whatsapp because i have an iphone and she had an android. if you both have iphones the imessage i heard works better than the whatsapp. also if you both are on facebook the call feature might work better on the facebook messenger. just be prepared in case the whatsapp call feature doesn't work for you on the ship you are on.

We are in the same situation. She has iPhone and I have a Note 5 (currently). I forgot you could call through Facebook. We are going on the Miracle. She is also going to be watching my babies (dog & cat). I won't need real Internet, just something that I can keep in contact with her.

hopefully it will work on the miracle but if not try the facebook messenger call feature that might work better. i'm guessing the call feature might work on the newer ships that have a better network set up as compared to the older ships like the pride that were retro fitted with the new system. not sure if it will matter with how the internet works but in case you didn't know the miracle is a sister ship as the pride but 3 years newer. so they are the exact same ship except for the decor and slightly different 2.0 upgrades.

Good idea! I've never used the calling feature for Facebook.

SkiftSocial: Carnival’s missed opportunity for social media success during the Triumph crisis

Carnival received an enormous outpouring of customer comments – both positive and negative – over the past week, but it could have been more proactive in its responses and updates given the visibility of the situation.

Carnival Cruise Lines could have turned its  Triumph crisis into a social media success, but it did not. Instead it went inward, then chose to use social media as a megaphone rather than a method of two-way communication. It also had the dubious honor of being the subject of a trending hashtag on Twitter: #cruisefromhell.

As one of the more favored cruise lines on the Internet, the troubled travel giant was in a prime position to do so: It is the most liked cruise line on Facebook with 2,192,322 “Likes” and the third-most followed cruise line on Twitter with 72,643 followers.

Although it posted 20 Triumph -related posts to Facebook since the incident, it failed to use social media to update family members, press, and onlookers to the conditions and status of the Triumph during last week’s travails, choosing instead to use it as a mouthpiece from CEO Gerry Cahill’s press conference and apology session.

The cruise company’s Twittter account didn’t kick into high gear until Thursday, four days after the Carnival Triumph engine fire. According to SkiftSocial , the cruise company’s average daily tweet rate for the past five years has been just over three a day, but it tweeted more than ten times that number on February 15 as passengers finally left the Carnival Triumph . The majority of the tweets were a series of apologetic and explanatory quotes from Cahill, like the following:

After the cruise line reported all passengers had disembarked on Friday, February 15, both Facebook and Twitter went silent until Tuesday, February 19, when it tweeted a link to a Facebook post on its upcoming Crew Member of the Month awards.

Apparently even a massive public health and public relations disaster isn’t reason enough for Carnival’s social media team to speak to its consumers and the public over a holiday weekend.

Although it didn’t post updates since Friday, Carnival did continue commenting on passengers’ many Facebook posts throughout the weekend.

Carnival representatives were quick to comment on nearly every positive message posted to its Facebook page, but rarely responded to negative posts. For such a widely publicized accident, Carnival’s page has remarkably few negative comments.

Carnival did not respond to a number of inquiries from Skift regarding their social media strategy during the crisis.

Why the 9-month Ultimate World Cruise is social media's latest obsession

It only took two weeks into a nine-month global cruise for it to go viral on TikTok.

The Ultimate World Cruise, a 274-night voyage aboard the Serenade of the Seas by Royal Caribbean Cruises, departed from Miami on Dec. 10. The cruise, which promises passengers travel to more than 60 countries and almost a dozen world wonders during its course, was intended to give those aboard the opportunity to spend the months “bonding with like-minded explorers over global discoveries across all seven continents,” according to Royal Caribbean’s website .

Shortly after its departure, many aboard the Serenade of the Seas began documenting their time on the ship. Some showed off cabins in the style of the MTV show “Cribs” while others opted to give tours of the entire ship. One couple made videos onboard joking about how they spent their children’s inheritances on the price of the cruise.

As people began to share their experiences on board, those on dry land were already reveling in the reality show that they believed would soon unfold on the Serenade of the Seas. On TikTok, the #UltimateWorldCruise tag has more than 54.8 million views as users obsess over what they speculate will turn into seaside drama. 

One person began tracking all the content creators on board so that others could easily follow along. Another offered advice to those on the ship on how to stay safe and healthy.

“I’m so invested in this 9 month world cruise happening cause I know it’s gonna be some MESS,” one person posted on X. 

“There’s going to be mutiny,” said one TikTok user. “There’s going to be blood. Someone is going overboard. I want to watch. Bravo, where are you? I need eyes,” the person said. “We’re witnessing Fyre Festival, Alabama Rush and no one is rushing there.”

Rumors also quickly began to circulate on TikTok, with some people alleging that the ship wasn’t at capacity and how some travelers with better membership status were being treated differently than the others on board. 

A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean Cruises did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment regarding the rumors, as well as the virality of the cruise itself. 

Although no major drama has unfolded aboard the ship, those following along on social media appear eager for reality TV-style turmoil to unfold. 

Jessica Maddox, an assistant professor of digital media at the University of Alabama where Bama Rush takes place each year, said she knows first-hand how morally gray it can be to wish drama onto the lives of real people.

“For the world cruise TikTok, I think it’s OK to think of the content we consume on TikTok as reality television,” she said. “But I think it’s important to remember these are real people, and that even reality television is scripted and coerced and is forced drama.”

Here’s everything we know.

Where is the cruise going and how much did it cost?

There are four legs of the cruise. The first traverses North America and South America over 67 nights and includes stops in Brazil, the Caribbean and Antarctica. 

The next leg of the cruise heads to the Pacific, stopping at 87 destinations in 87 nights. These stops include New Zealand, Japan, Australia, China and India, among other countries. 

The penultimate leg of the trip heads to the Mediterranean and Middle East destinations over the course of another 67 days. The stops include Egypt, Greece, Italy and Turkey. 

Finally, the last leg sees passengers touring Europe, with stops in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway over the final 63 nights. 

Some said they cannot fathom what being on the cruise, traveling to that many locations while eating and drinking the days away, would do to a person physically. 

“Imagine eating unlimited cruise food for nine months, like what that’s going to do to your body. I just worry people aren’t going to pace themselves and it’s going to be really hard on their bodies. They’re vacationing for nine months. Like, you can’t vacation for nine months! You need to have balance,” one TikToker said in a video about concerns for the passengers aboard the ship. 

But travelers were not required to book the entire nine-month duration of the cruise. Instead, they were able to purchase either a nine- to 28-night duration aboard the ship or one of the four segments of the trip, rather than booking the entire trip, Royal Caribbean's website states.

Those who chose the full trip, prices started at $53,999, according to the Royal Caribbean website. 

What’s really happening onboard? 

The passengers on the Serenade of the Seas so far seem to be enjoying the cruise, according to several who spoke to " TODAY ." 

Sisters Brandee and Shannon Lake, who are Black, said they’re sharing a cabin and said that quarantining  together during the pandemic prepared them to live in close quarters on the ship for nine months. 

Brandee Lake, 46, said the staff and passengers have been “so friendly, so kind, so much energy,” quashing some of the online chatter that there’s tension among different travelers. 

She appeared to have one issue, according to a TikTok that she posted, saying she has been repeatedly asked if she is a member of the ship’s staff rather than a traveler. 

“If I get asked if I work on this ship one more time,” she said in the video. “After I said I was not working, then I was asked if I was independently wealthy — like, basically, how did you afford this?

But she told "TODAY" that after she posted her TikTok, the cruise’s hotel manager made it a point to greet her during dinner. She and Shannon Lake, 42, said that nothing has happened yet on the ship that would be worthy of reality TV.

Brandee Lake did not immediately respond to a request for comment made by NBC News. 

Other passengers told "TODAY" they were on the cruise to celebrate wedding anniversaries. One traveler, Angie Linderman, said she took the trip because she is at a higher risk for developing cancer in her lifetime and wanted to check off bucket list items while she is healthy. 

“Retirement age is not a guarantee. And so (there is) an emphasis on just doing all of the things I can do now while I’m healthy, while I’m able, instead of putting them off in hopes that I can do them later, when in reality that may not happen,” she said. 

So is there drama and why is social media obsessed?

Well, not really. 

Some have homed in on the fact that “pinnacle members,” Royal Caribbean’s highest tier of membership, have access to different excursions and have allegedly had town hall meetings. This doesn’t appear to be out of the norm for a cruise, Maddox said. 

But there have been some suggestions that people of different backgrounds might be experiencing different treatment on the ship. 

One person claimed that American and non-American guests were being treated differently on board the ship. 

Beyond that, those documenting their time on the ship have yet to report any reality TV-worthy drama for TikTok to consume. The posts from those on land have mostly consisted of documenting who is aboard the ship, creating “bingo cards” for events on the ship, and cheering on drama. 

“I don’t love the idea of people dubbing themselves ‘gossip director’ or ‘content curator,’ which I’ve seen to describe, like, talking about viral trends and events on the ship,” Maddox said. “These are real people with real lives on the other side of the screen.”

Like Maddox, many likened the cruise to the viral BamaRushTok — the time of year when sororities recruit new members at The University of Alabama, which is often shared by potential recruits on TikTok. Maddox, who has taught some of the women who became stars of the Bama Rush phenomenon, said she’s seen first-hand how real people being treated like figures on reality TV can be damaging and stressful. 

“There’s definitely this fascination that’s baked into TikTok that we see exacerbated in things like Bama Rush and the world cruise of ‘I could never live this life, so I’m now going to live vicariously through these people,’” Maddox said. 

Maddox said it makes sense that people are trying to use the language of reality TV to understand what they see on TikTok, where “storytime” posts and drama are often posted episodically. Still, she urged viewers to remember that where reality TV is often scripted and planned behind the scenes, those on the Ultimate World Cruise are real people living their real lives.

“It’s an ethical issue to hope and wish drama upon people who are just trying to do this fun thing with their lives and decided to share it with us,” Maddox said. “So I hope everybody, including the people who are enjoying watching this content, take a pause and remember that ethical social media use applies to them too.”

Carnival Cruise Line confirms ban on a popular cabin hack

C ruise cabins are small so cruisers get very innovative when it comes to how they use their space. Some people like to bring hanging shoe bags which can be used to store small items in addition to their shoes.

In many cases, people bring magnetic metal hooks in order to be able to hang some items and keep them off the floor. Others use their suitcase for storage or as a hamper slipping it under the bed.

Every cruiser has their preferred method of maximizing space which can be important when multiple people are staying in a room that has limited storage. Newer ships have generally improved upon this with clever designs that make seemingly every inch of space usable, but there's only so much you can do in a space that's only about 180 square feet — which could have as many as four passengers sharing the room.

It's a challenge that many cruisers take very seriously, but there are also some things you are not allowed to do in a cruise cabin. You can't, for example, hang clothes out to dry on a balcony nor can you drag a mattress out there for a balcony nap. 

Both of those seem like obvious no-nos, but you'd be surprised how often someone sees their bathing suit blown away because they were breaking the the no drying rule. Carnival Cruise Line has another hard and fast rule which the company's brand ambassador John Heald felt compelled to address on his Facebook page.

You can't do this on a Carnival cruise ship   

Heald responded on his Facebook page to a viral photo of a cruise cabin where someone had rigged a ceiling fan by using pullies and magnets attached to the ceiling. It is not known what cruise line the picture was taken on.

"There were multiple posts about this from various people yesterday and I want to confirm that we do not allow anything like this to be done. Nothing hanging or taped or magnetized or tied to the ceiling is allowed and for obvious safety reasons. Thank you for your understanding everyone," Heald wrote.

There is one situation where Carnival makes a bit of an exception.

"After conversation with the beards I should’ve noted that we do allow those people using CPAP machines to use magnets to attach the wiring across the ceiling down to the power point (plug) by the dresser. But nothing, nothing at all can be hung from the ceiling," he added. "I do apologize for any confusion."

Carnival passengers push back

A number of Heald's followers shared situations where they hang things from the ceiling and have not been told to take them down.

"We hang shower curtains with magnets for privacy (have never had a problem) people put magnetic ceiling fans, carnival staff hangs decorations. So things are hung from the ceiling," Elisabeth Given Wascher posted.

Some people lamented that Carnival, at least on many ships, does not offer an outlet near the bed, while Kenny Walker had his own solution.

Job description.

The Casting & Booking Associate is responsible for supporting their Supervisor in the recruitment, hiring, and scheduling of entertainment team members across the Carnival Cruise Line fleet. Conduct auditions/interviews to find new talent. Manage the bidding process for returning team members.

Essential Functions:

  • Conduct auditions (online and in cities around the world) to find the best new talent for all positions, and ensure all who apply receive a timely response from CCL Entertainment. 
  • Strategically cast team members based on knowledge of shipboard product and individual’s skill set. 
  • Maintain discipline schedule, and individuals’ movement in Crew Personnel System for 1000+ team members.
  • Coordinate logistics of all auditions/interviews including setting up venues and equipment prior to recruitment events.
  • Prepare returning staff for their contracts to help ensure success.
  • Conduct all department change auditions ensuring current team members have equal opportunity to join the Entertainment team.
  • Provide cover for Supervisor, Casting & Booking as needed

Qualifications:

  • Associates degree
  • 2-4 years working in an office environment, preferably with database systems and the need to use strategic thinking.     
  • Must be computer/tech/web savvy and familiar with all MS office products, especially Excel. Database knowledge preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strategic thinking to find solutions to complex problems that can balance short and long-term objectives. Ability to work proactively, both individually and as a team. Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Ability to remain calm and focused when working under pressure in time-sensitive situations.     

Physical Demands : Must be able to remain in a stationary position at a desk and/or computer for extended periods of time. May need to stand for long periods of time.

Travel : Less than 25% non-shipboard travel likely

Work Conditions : Work primarily in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential. May be requested to work a different shift.

The range for this role’s base salary is $50,000 - $63,800.  Offers to selected candidates will be made on a fair and equitable basis, taking into account specific job-related skills and experience.
