Tour de France: Pogacar leads UAE Team Emirates line-up in bid for third straight title

Uci world tour team announces eight-rider line-up for the grand tour, starting friday.

Tadej Pogacar will lead UAE Team Emirates at the 2022 Tour de France, where the Slovenian rider is bidding to win his third straight title.

UAE Team Emirates announced their eight-rider line-up on Monday, headlined by the world's top-ranked world cyclist. Pogacar is aiming to become the sixth cyclist in history to win the Tour de France in three successive years.

His first triumph, in 2020, was achieved in spectacular style when he snatched the lead in the race's penultimate stage, before defending the title with a dominant performance last year. Much like 12 months ago, Pogacar prepared for the Tour de France by winning his home race, the Tour of Slovenia, earlier this month.

The 23-year-old has a further three victories this year, winning the Tirreno–Adriatico, defending his UAE Tour title, and taking the Strade Bianche.

”It’s already my third time coming to the Tour and I’m really excited about it," Pogacar said. "We’ve worked really hard all year as a team to prepare for this and we hope we can give everyone watching three weeks of exciting racing.

"This year so far has been a positive one for the team and we are hoping to continue that here at the Tour. We know it won’t be easy and we’ll have many challenges but that is part of the magic of the Tour.”

Pogacar will be supported at the Tour de France by Poland's Rafal Majka – who finished runner-up to his teammate in Slovenia, where he won two stages – American Brandon McNulty, Spain's Marc Soler, Italian Matteo Trentin, Norway's Vegard Stake Laengen, New Zealand's George Bennett, and Danish rider Mikkel Norsgaard Bjerg.

Team manager Joxean Matxin Fernandez of Spain will lead the squad alongside sports directors Andrej Hauptman of Slovenia, Switzerland's Simone Pedrazzini, and Italian Marco Marcato.

“Every year the challenge to win the Tour gets harder, all we can do is prepare as best we can and trust our team to produce their best as a group," Fernandez said.

"Our ambition is to win the overall title with Pogacar and we have built a strong team around him. Last year we had a great group and the base of the team is similar to last years with a few strong additions in key areas.

"We have studied the route and it’s far from an easy parcours. Also the level of our competitors is really high, but we are confident and know that a big result is well within the capabilities of Tadej and the team."

The 2022 Tour de France begins on Friday, with the Grand Depart taking place from the Danish capital of Copenhagen. This year's race comprises 3,328km over 21 stages, starting with a 13km time trial, before heading towards the Alps by way of a cobbled stage through Arenberg and onto the Pyrenees. The race will conclude with the traditional ceremonial finish to the Champs Elysees in Paris.

Adam Yates of UAE Team Emirates won the opening stage of the Tour de France in Bilbao on Saturday outsprinting his twin brother Simon Yates of Jayco.

The British twins had broken free at the top of the final climb.

Two-time Tour winner Tadej Pogacar came in third, 12 seconds adrift at the end of 182km circuit starting and ending in the Basque city.

Adam Yates, a newly-recruited teammate of Pogacar, took both the first Yellow Jersey for the overall lead and the first green jersey for sprint points.

He led an elite clique up the Sondika hill through a narrow passage formed by enthusiastic flag-waving fans.

Simon Yates, long considered the better of the British identical twins, is second in the overall standings, at eight seconds. Slovenian Pogacar is third at 18 sec. Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard was another four seconds off the pace.

The race began under grey skies outside Athletic Bilbao's San Mames stadium. The riders were cheered round the countryside circuit by enthusiastic crowds.

Spaniard Enric Mas of the EF team had hopes of contending for the final podium in Paris, instead he was the first rider to abandon after falling heavily with Ecuadorian teammate Richard Carapaz 10km from home.

The streets along the route were decked out with the Basque white, green and red flags as the Tour de France yellow was for once eclipsed.

Dane Vingegaard of Jumbo Visma led the peloton past the landmark Guggenheim museum before a breakaway formed as the peloton swept into pine and fir forests on the rolling green hills that mark this Atlantic coast region.

American rider Neilson Powless took the polka dot jersey for best climber after winning the race to the top of the penultimate hill.

Stage two is another hilly run through the Basque region from Vitoria to San Sebastian.

UAE Team Emirates aiming for third consecutive Tour De France victory

Sport uae sport.

  • Golf in UAE

109th edition kicks off in Copenhagen on July 1st

sport

Abu Dhabi: The Tour De France – the world’s most famous cycling race – will soon be kicking off once again as the world’s eyes will turn towards UAE Team Emirates. The team will aim to win a third consecutive Tour de France.

On Friday July 1st, the world’s greatest riders will take to the saddle for Stage 1 of the 21 Stage race. A 13.2km time trial will get the 109th edition of the Tour De France underway, before the riders eventually roll into the mountains and push their bodies and physical capabilities to the absolute limit.

The team to beat are UAE Team Emirates. The man to beat is Tadej Pogacar. The Slovenian superstar is gunning for his third Tour De France victory in as many years, a feat that has only been matched by cycling greats such as Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Miguel Indurain, and Chris Froome.

Morale high

As Pogacar’s focus will be cementing himself amongst Cycling immortality, he will be ably supported by a UAE Team Emirates group hot from their incredible win in the Tour of Slovenia. After winning 4 of the 5 stages in the race, there can be no doubt that the morale is high within the camp ahead of ‘Le Grand Boucles’.

The Tour De France leaves no stone unturned in its quest for determining the victor - with wind, cobbles, sprints, echelons, big climbs, small climbs, and time trials all awaiting the riders and their support teams.

Ever famed for its mind-boggling climbs and ascents, the Tour De France enters the Alps at the beginning of week two. This is earmarked as an incredibly exciting period of the race, as we will start to see the formation of the General Classification (GC), as well as the Polka Dot Jersey (climbers jersey) starting to become hotly contested.

As the race enters week 3, the riders will see themselves tackling the Pyrenees Mountain range. This phase of the race will be the most challenging and testing for the riders, as the mountains come thick and fast with very little margin for error. Cycling fans around the world will be tuning in specifically to stages 16 through 18, renowned for their difficulty and brutality as the cyclists exert every last ounce of energy and channel it up the unforgiving mountain range.

One stage in particular to pay close attention to is stage 12; Briancon to Alpe D’huez, which happens to also fall on Bastille Day in France. One can be sure to see French riders battling fiercely in the hope of securing a memorable and widely celebrated victory on France’s national day.

'Feeling good'

Pogacar said, “As a team, we are focused, and we are ready. We are really close as a group and have complete confidence in each other’s abilities. Our preparation has been excellent and I’m feeling in really good condition, I can’t wait to get started.”

Team CEO, Mauro Gianetti said, “When we first started this team in 2017, we had an ambitious five-year plan to win the Tour de France and cement ourselves as one of the top teams on the World Tour. We stand here today having won it twice already and in a good position to be competitive once again – which is a fantastic feat. The team, the staff and our partners should be very proud of how far we’ve come in such a short space of time. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the UAE, and we’ll be doing all we can to make our fans in the UAE proud.”

Following Visma-Lease a Bike 's tradition of announcing their preliminary Tour de France squad many months in advance, UAE Team Emirates unveiled their eight-man line-up at the squad's December training camp in Altea, Spain, earlier this week. Amongst its number is the third-placed finisher from this year's Tour de France, Adam Yates , who gave his initial reaction to the news in discussion with GCN .

"I think it will be good, I mean I think it will be a bit of a challenge," Yates said. "Last year, we had almost like the perfect team in a way, with the big guys, the medium guys and the climbers. So, next year will be a little bit different with a lot more climbers, but we'll see."

As Yates refers to, UAE Team Emirates' line-up is certainly weighted towards its flotilla of climbing talent, with rouleurs Tim Wellens and Nils Politt joined by no less than six riders whose most favourable terrain is the mountains: Yates, Tadej Pogačar , Pavel Sivakov, Marc Soler, Juan Ayuso and João Almeida.

This goes against the grain of usual Tour de France-winning squads, who compliment their lightweight mountain goats with a handy selection of riders who are at their best when the road does not go uphill.

For example, in Jumbo-Visma's team to support Jonas Vingegaard 's winning ride this year, the Dutch squad paired climbers Sepp Kuss and Wilco Kelderman with strong heavyweights such as Dylan van Baarle, Nathan van Hooydonck and Tiesj Benoot. For UAE Team Emirates, a lot will be expected of Wellens and Politt should the team have to control the peloton for days on end, a task that would be wasted on the likes of Sivakov.

In addition, eyebrows were raised at the calibre of those climbers named in support of Pogačar, with Ayuso, Almeida and Sivakov arguably strong enough to warrant Grand Tour leadership at Grand Tour level for many of the other WorldTeams.

This is not a question of what is fair and unfair, but more so a question mark over how UAE Team Emirates will balance the ambitions and expectations of so many would-be contenders. Ayuso and Almeida are both Grand Tour podium finishers, but so too is Yates, and the 31-year-old does not see his role changing as a result of their inclusions.

"Last year was super nice, everyone knew their role," Yates said, acknowledging his position as the team's second-in-command. "So we all had a role, we all had a job and I think for me, my role doesn’t really change.

"So for me, my preparation and what I’ve been told I need to do doesn’t change. So for me, personally, nothing changes. But obviously, we have to deal with different riders and different riding styles for next year, but we’ll see."

It is no surprise to hear that Yates will likely be second-in-line at UAE Team Emirates in the Tour de France, after all, the Brit is in many ways the perfect teammate for Pogačar in his conquest to overcome Visma-Lease a Bike's Vingegaard. One of the best climbers in the world in his own right, Yates is a selfless teammate who is as happy to put his team leader first as he is to grasp the opportunities he is afforded with both hands - or legs.

"The team we had last year was pretty much perfect in terms of the atmosphere and the personalities we had in the team. So it was super easy for us to get on," Yates said. "Even on the first stage, the race has barely begun and I've asked for an opportunity to try something, and everyone's agreed and everyone’s happy for me to try something.

"I rewarded them with a stage win and a few days in yellow, when you have that trust with the riders and the staff, you can do something special like this."

Adam Yates may have been the only one of the pair to pull on yellow this season, but there is never any doubt as to where Yates' loyalties lie when it comes to Tadej Pogačar

Adam Yates may have been the only one of the pair to pull on yellow this season, but there is never any doubt as to where Yates' loyalties lie when it comes to Tadej Pogačar

Time will tell whether or not UAE Team Emirates are able to capture the same team spirit in 2024 as delivered second and third in Paris this year, but whilst the personnel involved in their mount on yellow will change, there is one thing that remains exactly the same - Yates' unwavering confidence in team leader, Pogačar.

'We back Tadej Pogačar 100 per cent,' Yates says of Giro-Tour double

Next year will see Pogačar attempt to become the first rider since Marco Pantani to win both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France in the same season, with the Slovenian ready to complete a lap of Italy before turning his attention to defeating reigning champion Vingegaard in France.

Tadej Pogačar to race the Giro d'Italia in 2024

Tadej pogačar: i never thought about skipping the tour de france.

The decision has seen many conclude that Pogačar's hopes of winning a third Tour de France title have suffered a blow, that if a fit and firing Pogačar can't get the better of the Dane in the Tour, then a Pogačar with Giro fatigue in his legs stands an even slimmer chance. But for Yates, there is no reason to question Pogačar's decision.

"For me, it’s no problem at all, I think if he wants to do that, then let him do it. He’s the best bike rider in the world for a reason, if he knows he can do Giro-Tour and still perform at the highest level, then we back him 100 per cent.

"There’s not many people that can win Flanders, Amstel, Lombardy and then go to the Tour and fight for GC. I don’t think there’s many riders in the history of the sport that can do that, so for me, he has to be the best bike rider in the world."

Where Pogačar fell short of his title bid at the Tour earlier this summer, Yates produced the best Grand Tour ride of his career to clinch the first overall podium of his career. Not only did Yates stand on the podium in Paris, but the man from Bury was able to win stage 1 and spend four days in the yellow jersey, an experience that Yates still struggles to truly put into words.

"As a kid you grow up and look up to the yellow jersey, so the mood is super nice and it was a really nice honour to wear. I also wore it for a few days in the Covid year in 2020, that was also a nice experience, but what can you say? You can’t really say anything can you?"

"It’s super nice and the nicest thing this time was that it was stage 1. It’s so chaotic and so messy, just to get through the stage without having an incident, a crash or something going wrong. Also being up there with Simon [Yates, his brother, who finished second on the day], it was really nice."

Yates happy to see consistency rewarded in 2023

Speaking to GCN from UAE Team Emirates' training camp on the Costa Blanca, Yates is in a noticeably chipper mood and more than happy to offer his time to the press pack who have gathered in the team's hotel. Why so cheery?

"Today, I was strong in training. We'll see tomorrow!" Yates joked.

Perhaps though, a contributing factor is the season that Yates has just enjoyed with his new teammates, having only joined UAE Team Emirates at the beginning of 2023. Hitting the ground running at the UAE Tour and performing with a consistency he has perhaps lacked in the past, has it been his best season to date?

"I think so," he answered. "My actual level has not gone that much higher, but it’s just that I’ve been really consistent throughout the year, which I've struggled with in the past. So for me, it's been a nice change not being sick and not being injured at key moments of the year, and that’s made a big difference this year."

Adam Yates has 23 pro victories to his name, the latest being the GP de Montréal in early September

The past few seasons for the Brit are perhaps indicative of the importance of fate being on a rider's side. For all the analysis of performances, watts per kilo and tactics, cycling is often a sport that comes down to chance.

After making a name for himself at GreenEdge as a youngster, Yates transferred to Ineos Grenadiers in 2021 and flourished, winning the Volta a Catalunya and finishing on the podium of Il Lombardia to round out the campaign.

But in his second and final season with Ineos, Yates suffered setback after setback, which came to a head with a bout of Covid just prior to the Tour de France. A reasonable ninth-place finish followed, but this year's podium finish at the Tour demonstrated the rider's true worth.

Per Yates' own conclusion, "nothing went wrong" for the Brit this season, offering him the opportunity to demonstrate his craft. Away from the Tour, Yates won the Tour de Romandie - adding to his burgeoning collection of stage race victories - finished second at the Critérium du Dauphiné and won the GP Montréal during a rich vein of late-season form.

A Grand Tour win is possible

Now 31 years of age, Yates is undoubtedly one of the best stage racers in the world and capable of picking off the odd big one-day victory, but the question remains: can he win a Grand Tour?

"With the level I have shown this year, it's possible," said Yates. But it's one thing saying it and one thing doing it. I know I have the level to do it, but it’s the circumstances, the parcours, how you ride as a team - all these little things make a big difference."

Next year will mark eight years since Adam Yates finished fourth at the Tour de France, but there remains much hope that the man from Bury can become Great Britain's latest Grand Tour winner

Next year will mark eight years since Adam Yates finished fourth at the Tour de France, but there remains much hope that the man from Bury can become Great Britain's latest Grand Tour winner

Cycling is a different sport from when Yates first burst onto the scene with a fourth-place finish at the 2016 Tour de France, indeed, it is vastly different from when Yates' brother Simon won the Vuelta a España in 2018. At 31, Yates is no fool and understands that the next few years will be make or break for his chances of winning a three-week stage race.

"Now these last few years all these young guys come straight from juniors and start winning, because they have a full nutrition plan and altitude camps when they’re 15 years old. My upbringing was a little bit different, I did my first altitude camp when I was second-year pro, and these guys are doing it when they’re juniors!

"I’m getting better every year, I just hope that next year I can go again one step higher and then the results hopefully will come."

Alongside the Tour de France and the Olympic Games, Yates may target the Vuelta a España in 2024, a race which could offer the 31-year-old an opportunity to be the outright leader for UAE Team Emirates.

After having put tens of riders to the sword at this year's Tour, few could argue that Yates has what it takes to chase his own GC ambitions. But as grounded as ever, the former yellow jersey wearer is not a man to boast his own confidence. Instead, he likes to reserve his talking for out on the road and hopes that 2024 will afford him the same opportunity to do so.

"Hopefully next year, I have no bad luck. I don’t want no bad luck or good luck, I just want to be in the middle and neutral!"

UAE Team Emirates 'expect war every day' at the Tour de France

Bennett forsees a hard battle for yellow ahead despite two wins in two days for Pogačar

UAE Team Emirates working for Tadej Pogacar on stage 7 of the Tour de France

German climber Lennard Kämna looked well set to claim a second career Tour de France victory as he raced into the final 2km of La Super Planche des Belles Filles, the strongest survivor from the breakaway holding a lead of 50 seconds on the chasing peloton.

However, the 25-year-old wouldn't raise his arms at the line as he did in Villard-de-Lans two years ago, with UAE Team Emirates charging to the summit behind. It was their team and race leader, Tadej Pogačar , who swept past with his Tour rival Jonas Vingegaard , ending Kämna's dream within 100 metres of the line.

In five previous visits to the Vosges mountain, only one breakaway rider has won a Tour de France stage on La Planche, and despite some pre-race predictions to the contrary, it was never the plan for UAE Team Emirates to let that happen again on Friday's stage.

Pogacar snuffs out Vingegaard's attack to win stage 7 of the 2022 Tour de France Pogacar: No gap is ever enough in the Tour de France Geraint Thomas rises to top of Ineos trident on first Tour de France mountain

Pogačar, who won the Tour outright with a stunning time trial ride there in 2020, called the climb "special" in his stage 6 winner's press conference, noting that his family and girlfriend would be at the top this year. Going for another victory was always the plan.

"We made no secret that we wanted to ride for the stage. We were very open – we go for the stage," George Bennett said after Pogačar's second conquest of La Planche.

"Once Brandon [McNulty] was pulling he pulled so fast and then – I mean actually the breakaway was really strong. We had to pull that fast and I was thinking we would catch them halfway up, but they really did a super job."

After Ineos Grenadiers led the way into the climb, 1:30 down on the breakaway, UAE Team Emirates took over with McNulty and Bennett controlling the pace. The time gap slipped down to a minute before Polish climber Rafał Majka took over for the final 3km of the climb.

He delivered perhaps the most notable turn on the front, helping reduce the gap to 35 seconds before the flamme rouge, and then delivering a very enthusiastic handwave to his leader at 800 metres to go – "a mistake" he admitted later, having thought they were closer to the final bend.

The job, of course, wasn't yet done. Vingegaard's challenge was a strong one as he and Pogačar flew past Kämna in the dying metres, the Dane now the main challenger in the battle for the maillot jaune. On Thursday, Pogačar surged into yellow at an earlier point than he had in either of his previous two Tour wins. That's no problem, though, said Bennett.

"I don't know what we're going to do the next few days, but I don't think there's a problem with having the jersey, you know what I mean?" he said. "Every day in yellow is good and I think we survived the first week really, really well.

"We took a lot of criticism because we weren't all lined up with eight guys doing the old trains but actually Tadej always had guys with him. You also saw today how strong Jonas and Primož [Roglič, third on the stage] were so we're going to have a really, really big battle. And as a fan of cycling, I'm looking forward to it."

While the hierarchy at UAE Team Emirates has always been clear, Roglič's time loss on the cobbles has sorted Jumbo-Visma's. Ineos Grenadiers' took shape on La Planche as Geraint Thomas emerged as the strongest of the British squads' leaders.

Both teams hold multiple options to challenge Pogačar, even if Roglič lies almost three minutes down. Bennett said that he expects UAE's rivals to go "apeshit" in the battle for the Tour, though he and his teammates will be ready.

"Maybe you don't beat him one-on-one, but you can set up a lot of situations and [Jumbo] have an advantage of having two guys that are dangerous," he said. "That just means Tadej needs a super strong team around them which he has and the stronger you are the more everybody tries to flick you, so you need a stronger team.

"I expect – I don't know what stage – there'll be one day where it just goes apeshit. Primož goes in the break, Sepp [Kuss] just drops everybody, something like that. There's going to be a situation where we need to really be ready. So, we never underestimate them. We never get complacent and we expect war every day."

After the stage, UAE manager Joxean Fernández Matxin called his team "a super team" as he praised the riders who delivered Pogačar – "a super character for whom the impossible is possible" – to an eighth stage victory in just three years.

"It's a step-by-step, day-to- day," he said, repeating a phrase common in pro cycling stage racing parlance. "It's normal. It's a big name, big riders, super professional. Majka is one of the best climbers, Bennett the same, in my opinion. There's McNulty, Soler, Mikkel Bjerg... This is a super team."

The Spaniard, too, was wary of their rival's strength, singling out the obvious duo of Vingegaard and Roglič as the two to watch.

"Vingegaard in that moment was at 35 seconds, a good rival. Tadej passed him in the last metres. Maximum respect for Vingegaard – and for Roglič who yesterday tried in the last corner. He lost two minutes on the cobbles, but you don't remember – with Roglič it's Roglič."

Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) won the yellow jersey as the overall winner of the 2023 Tour de France. The 26-year-old won the Tour for the second straight season, becoming the 21st rider in history to win the race multiple times. Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), another two-time TdF winner, finished second for the second straight season, 7 minutes, 29 seconds behind Vingegaard. Pogačar’s UAE Team Emirates teammate Adam Yates was third overall, 10 minutes, 56 seconds behind the winner, to round out the podium of the Tour de France.

Here’s a look at how the General Classification played out in every stage of the 2023 Tour de France.

2023 Tour de France Champion - Jonas Vingegaard

topshot cycling fra tdf2023 stage21

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) officially won the 2023 Tour de France after safely finishing Stage 21 on Sunday, July 23. For the second straight year, Vingegaard was the top General Classification rider at the Tour. This time, he beat second place Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) by 7:29, the largest margin of victory in the GC since Vincenzo Nibali won by 7:37 in 2014.

Vingegaard first claimed the yellow jersey after Stage 6 and never relinquished it. He led by 25 seconds over Pogačar at that point, but Pogačar slowly but surely cut into that advantage. That is, until Stage 16, when Vingegaard rode a brilliant time trial to drive his lead over Pogačar to 1:48. The next day on Stage 17, Vingegaard further solidified his lead after Pogačar cracked in the high mountains, driving Vingegaard’s lead well past seven minutes. He held that lead through the finish in Paris on Sunday. Pogačar, meanwhile, won the white jersey as the best young rider (25 years or younger) in the Tour de France. He wins white for a record-breaking fourth time.

Pogačar wasn’t the only UAE Team Emirates rider on the podium. Adam Yates, who held the yellow jersey from Stage 2 through Stage 5, finished third overall, 10:56 behind the leader. His twin brother, Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla), finished fourth overall, 12:23 back. Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) was fifth, 13:17 back.

Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninick) won the green jersey as the winner of the points classification. Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) won the polka jersey, winning the King of the Mountains classification. Vingegaard’s Jumbo-Visma team won the team classification, with the best time of their team’s top three riders.

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) will wear the yellow jersey on the Champs-Élysées on Sunday as the leader of the 2023 Tour de France. Vingegaard is set to win his second straight Tour de France—barring diaster or as he said, “anything stupid—on the 21st and final stage.

Vingegaard finished second on Saturday’s Stage 20 with the same time as his top rival Tadej Pogačar. Pogačar claimed the stage win, but will have to settle for second to Vingegaard for a second straight year. This year, Vingegaard holds a 7 minute, 35 second advantage on Pogačar.

Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) remains in third overall, 10:56 back of the yellow jersey to get the final podium spot. His twin brother Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla) moved up a spot to fourth on Saturday. He’s 12:23 back of the lead. Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) rounds out the top five, losing a spot on Stage 20 after crashing early in the stage. He’s 12:57 behind the leader.

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) leads the 2023 Tour de France through 19 stages. Stage 19 was packed with a lot of exciting drama up front, but the General Classification contenders stayed well behind the action well over 13 minutes behind the stage winner.

Vingegaard continues to lead Tadej Pogačar (Team UAE Emirates) by 7:35. Adam Yates (also from UAE Team Emirates) is in third place overall, 10:45 back of the lead.

Stage 18 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

cycling fra tdf2023 stage18

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) remains in the lead of the 2023 Tour de France after Stage 18. Thursday’s stage was a day for the sprinters (even though the breakaway managed to barely survive), so there were no changes as far as the GC situation. Stage 18 comes a day after Vingegaard solidified his spot atop the yellow jersey standings.

Vingegaard leads second place Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) by 7:35. Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) is in third, 10:45 behind the leader, and Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) is in fourth, 12:01 behind. With three stages to go, Vingegaard surely can taste his second straight Tour victory.

  • Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma): 72:04:39
  • Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck): 323 points
  • Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates): 72:12:14 (+4:26)

Stage 17 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

110th tour de france 2023 stage 17

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) leads the 2023 Tour de France, furthering his advantage on Stage 17. Vingegaard now leads second place Tadej Pogačar by 7 minutes, 37 seconds after leading by just 10 seconds two stages prior. Pogačar cracked in a big way on Wednesday, losing major time, while Vingegaard excelled once again in the mountains to gain massive amounts of time on his closest rival and pre-Tour co-favorite.

Vingegaard made major gains during the Stage 16 individual time trial, and then on Wednesday he delivered a virtual punishing blow to Pogačar’s yellow jersey hopes. It seemed during the Tour’s second week that Pogačar had a slight upperhand on Vingegaard. But it wasn’t to be as the defending champion through down his time trial and then big mountain ride on consecutive days. That changed the Tour from one of the closest of all-time to the largest leading margin since 2014.

There are four stages still remaining, but barring something completely unexpected, Vingegaard will win the Tour de France once again by the end of the day on Sunday.

  • Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma): 67:57:51
  • Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates): 68:05:26 (+4:26)

Stage 16 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

110th tour de france 2023 stage 16

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) leads the General Classification of the 2023 Tour de France after Stage 16. Vingegaard extended his hold on the yellow jersey on Tuesday on an individual time trial. The maillot jaune crushed the ITT, winning the stage by 1:38 and extending his GC lead to 1:48 over second place Tadej Pogačar, his top rival.

Vingegaard was magnificent on the time trial, putting time into Pogačar from the start all the way to the finish. It’s the first time this Tour that one of the co-favorites put a major amount of time into the other, as Vingegaard has firmly asserted himself as the one to beat over the remaining five stages.

Elsewhere in the GC battle for the podium, Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) moved up from fourth to third place in the standings. Yates supplanted Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) after the time trial. Yates, Pogačar’s teammate, is 8:52 behind the yellow jersey Vingegaard. Rodriguez is now in fourth place, 8:57 behind Vingegaard. Just five seconds separates Yates and Rodriguez, so it should be an exciting matchup between those two for the third and final podium spot in the GC.

  • Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma): 63:06:53
  • Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates): -1:48
  • Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates): -8:52
  • Carlos Rodríguez (INEOS Grenadiers): -8:57
  • Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe): -11:15
  • Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek): 63 points
  • Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates): 63:08:41 (+7:09)

Stage 15 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

topshot cycling fra tdf2023 stage15

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) remains in the yellow jersey after Stage 15 of the 2023 Tour de France. Vingegaard holds a 10-second lead over Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) after another tough mountain stage. Ultimately, the gap between the two GC favorites remained unchanged, as the two riders finished the stage together. The Tour heads into a Monday rest day before the final week begins, and very little has separated Vingegaard and Pogačar.

Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) was able to extend his hold on the third place podium spot after Stage 15. Rodriguez finished the stage ahead of Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe), who he started the day just one second ahead of. Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) moved up ahead of Hindley for fourth place overall.

  • Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma): 62:34:17
  • Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates): -:10
  • Carlos Rodríguez (INEOS Grenadiers): -5:21
  • Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates): -5:40
  • Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe): -6:38
  • Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek): 58 points
  • Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates): 62:34:27 (+5:11)

Stage 14 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

cycling fra tdf2023 stage14

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) still leads the 2023 Tour de France after a wild Stage 14. Vingegaard now holds a 10-second advantage on Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates). Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) moves up to third place in the GC after winning Stage 14. He’s now 4:43 behind the yellow jersey. Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) moves to fourth place in the GC, 4:44 back of the lead. Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) is in fifth place, 5:20 behind.

Stage 14 only saw a change of one single second among the two leaders, Vingegaard and Pogačar, but that didn’t mean there weren’t plenty of fireworks. Jumbo-Visma pushed the pace to make it hard on Pogačar, but Pogačar looked to be relatively unfazed by it all. The stage proved that the battle for the yellow jersey will go down to the bitter end between Vingegaard and Pogačar.

  • Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma): 57:47:28
  • Carlos Rodríguez (INEOS Grenadiers): -4:43
  • Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe): -4:44
  • Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates): -5:20
  • Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma): 54 points
  • Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates): 57:47:38

Stage 13 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

cycling fra tdf2023 stage13

Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) held onto the yellow jersey as the leader of the 2023 Tour de France. But the gap between the defending champion and Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) has narrowed after the Slovenian, winner of the Tour in 2020 and 2021, attacked and then gapped the Dane about 400 meters from the top of the “Beyond Category” Col du Grand Colombier at the end of Stage 14.

Pogačar crossed the line 4 seconds ahead of Vingegaard and in doing so finished third on the stage to take a 4-second time bonus, which cut Vingegaard’s overall advantage to just 9 seconds. With two days in the Alps before Monday’s rest day, expect more fireworks as these two continue their intense fight to win the 2023 Tour de France.

A little less than a minute before the reignition of the Tour’s GC battle, Poland’s Michal Kwiatkowski (INEOS Grenadiers) won the stage after spending all day in the breakaway and attacking what was left of it on the lower slopes of the Grand Colombier. A super-domestique with an impressive resume of his own, the 33-year-old proved too strong for UAE Team Emirates to catch, holding-off Belgium’s Maxim Van Gils (Lotto-Soudal) and then Pogačar to take the second Tour de France stage victory of his career.

  • Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma): 53:48:50

Stage 12 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

110th tour de france 2023 stage 12

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) remained in the yellow jersey after a somewhat stressful Stage 12 of the Tour de France. Despite the stress, the GC picture remained mostly unchanged. Vingegaard remains 17 seconds ahead of second place Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates). Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) is third overall in the GC, 2:40 back.

Thibaut Pinot made a jump into the top ten of the GC, going from 15th to tenth after gaining time on the other GC contenders in the breakaway on Thursday.

  • Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma): 50:30:23
  • Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates): -:17
  • Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe): -2:40
  • Carlos Rodríguez (INEOS Grenadiers): -4:22
  • Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious): -4:34
  • Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates): 50:30:40 (+4:05)

Stage 11 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

110th tour de france 2023 stage 11

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) continues to lead the 2023 Tour de France after 11 stages. Stage 11 saw no change to the General Classification on a sprint stage, despite a relatively tricky road into the finish.

Vingegaard remains 17 seconds ahead of Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) for the lead in the yellow jersey competition. Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) is in third, holding down the final podium spot, 2:40 behind Vingegaard. Tuesday’s flat stage is the last true sprinter’s stage until perhaps Stage 19—or even the final Stage 21 in Paris—so we can expect an eventful next week or so as far as the GC is concerned.

  • Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma): 46:34:27
  • Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates): 46:34:44 (+4:05)

Stage 10 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

cycling fra tdf2023 stage10 podium

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) held onto the yellow leader’s jersey after Stage 10 of the 2023 Tour de France, leading Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) by 17 seconds. Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) remains in third place, 2:40 behind Vingegaard. These standings should stay the same after Stage 11, which will likely favor the sprinters.

Stage 10 didn’t see any major GC moves, but that didn’t mean it was an easy day in the saddle for the yellow jersey hopefuls. The peloton held the breakaway in check throughout the day, never giving them too much time. Ultimately, there weren’t any moves on the stage after the rest day from Vingegaard or Pogačar.

  • Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma): 42:33:13

Stage 9 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

cycling fra tdf2023 stage9

Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) held onto his lead in the 2023 Tour de France, but lost time to Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) at the end of Sunday’s Stage 9. The stage finished atop the Hors Categorie (“Beyond Category”) Puy de Dôme, an extinct volcano rising above the Massif Central that the Tour hasn’t been climbed by the Tour since 1988.Canada’s Mike Woods (Israel-PremierTech) won the stage.

The former world class distance runner paced himself perfectly from the base of the climb, catching multiple riders left from the day’s big breakaway on the way to his first Tour de France stage victory. France’s Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies) finished second, and Slovenia’s Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious) finished third. But the battle to win the Tour’s General Classification took place over eight minutes later, as Vingegaard and Pogačar continued their duel on the climb’s upper slopes.

Jumbo-Visma did a terrific job of whittling down to the yellow jersey group, but it was Pogačar who took advantage pulling away from Vingegaard about 1,400meters from the summit finish. Vingegaard only lost 8 seconds to the Slovenian, but heading into the first rest day, he now leads the Tour by just 17 seconds. The race to win the 2023 Tour de France is far from over.

  • Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma): 38:37:46
  • Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates): -4:39

Stage 8 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

110th tour de france 2023 stage 8

There was once again no change in the overall, as Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) continues to lead the 2023 Tour de France. The defending champion has a 25-second advantage on Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), as the peloton prepares to head into a big mountain stage on Sunday.

Simon Yates (Jayco–AlUla) was the lone GC contender to lose time on Stage 8, crashing with about 6K to go in the stage, outside of the 3K safe zone. Yates went from being 3:14 down from the leader Vingegaard to 4:01 after Saturday.

  • Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates): -:25
  • Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe): -1:34
  • Carlos Rodríguez (INEOS Grenadiers): -3:30
  • Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates): -3:40

  • Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost): 36 points
  • Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates): +3:05

Stage 7 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

110th tour de france 2023 stage 7

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) enjoyed his first day in the yellow leader’s jersey during Stage 7 at the 2023 Tour de France. It was a relatively easy day—despite some intense heat—for the GC contenders in the peloton on Friday’s stage designed for the sprinters.

Vingegaard continues to hold a 25-second GC lead over Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates). The two riders will likely see a major GC clash again on Sunday’s Stage 9 mountain stage. Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) is 1:34 behind the yellow jersey Vingegaard in third overall.

  • Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla): -3:14
  • Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck): 215 points

Stage 6 Leader - Jonas Vingegaard

110th tour de france 2023 stage 6

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) took over the lead of the 2023 Tour de France after an eventful Stage 6 that saw the GC contenders battle it out for the stage win and crucial seconds. Vingegaard will wear the yellow jersey on Friday’s Stage 7. He leads second place Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) by 25 seconds in the overall standings after Pogačar won Stage 6. Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe), who wore the yellow jersey on the day, lost time on Thursday and is now in third place in the GC, 1:34 back of the leader.

After Vingegaard dealt a major blow to Pogačar on Stage 5, Pogačar roared back to capture the stage win and prove that the GC is not over yet. Despite Vingegaard moving into the yellow jersey, Stage 6 was much more defined by Pogačar gaining time on Vingegaard than the changing of the guard in the leader’s jersey. It seemed after Stage 5 that the defending champion Vingegaard was clearly the strongest rider in the peloton once again, but Pogačar, a two-time Tour champion in his own right, showed us that it’s a long way to Paris and it could be a fierce battle all the way to the end.

  • Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck): 150 points

Stage 5 Leader - Jai Hindley

cycling fra tdf2023 stage5 podium

Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) took over the lead of the 2023 Tour de France after a brilliant win on Stage 5. Hindley leads the General Classification by 47 seconds (thanks in part to 18 seconds worth of bonuses picked up on Stage 5) over second place overall Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma). Giulio Ciccone (Lidl–Trek) is 1:03 back in third overall and Emanuel Buchmann (Bora–Hansgrohe) is in fourth overall, 1:11 back.

The yellow jersey holder for the first five stages, Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) lost the lead on Wednesday and is now in fifth overall, 1:34 back of the lead. Tadej Pogačar, the co-prerace favorite along with Vingegaard, lost time on Stage 5 and is now in sixth place overall, 1:40 behind the leader Hindley. Vingegaard is 53 seconds ahead of Pogačar.

Stage 5 saw some major GC shakeups. Hindley, the 2022 winner of the Giro d’Italia, sits in yellow with a solid 47-second advantage over Vingegaard. With a grand tour win already under his belt, Hindley has a chance to stay in yellow for a while. Of course, a lot of that depends on the race tactics of Vingegaard and Pogačar, who may likely spar again on a mountainous Stage 6.

  • Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe): -
  • Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma): -:47
  • Giulio Ciccone (Lidl–Trek): -1:03
  • Emanuel Buchmann (Bora–Hansgrohe): -1:11
  • Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates): -1:34
  • Felix Gall (AG2R Citroën): 28 points
  • Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates): +:16

Stage 4 Leader - Adam Yates

110th tour de france 2023 stage 4

There was no change in the General Classification standings of the Tour de France after Stage 4. Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) will stay in the yellow jersey another day, holding onto a six second advantage over teammate Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and his twin brother Simon Yates (Jayco–AlUla).

Stage 5 has a good chance to brings some GC fireworks. Pogačar—in second place overall—has an 11-second advantage over Tour de France co-favorite Jonas Vingegaard, who is in sixth place overall. That could change—one way or the other–on Wednesday.

  • Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates): -
  • Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates): -:06
  • Simon Yates (Jayco–AlUla): -:06
  • Victor Lafay (Cofidis): -:12
  • Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma): -:16
  • Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost): 18 points

Stage 3 Leader - Adam Yates

110th tour de france 2023 stage 3

Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) continues to lead the 2023 Tour de France. After the first two stages of the Tour de France brought a ton of fireworks and battles between the General Classification contenders, Stage 3 was the first (mostly) flat day for the sprinters.

Yates remains in the lead of the GC still six seconds up over second place Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and third place Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla). There were no significant losses among the contenders on Stage 3.

  • Victor Lafay (Cofidis): 80 points

Stage 2 Leader - Adam Yates

cycling esp tdf2023 stage 2 podium

Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) maintained his lead of the 2023 Tour de France after Stage 2. Adam Yates finished 21st on the stage, but finished on the same time as the other top finishers of the day. He now holds the yellow jersey by six seconds over second place Tadej Pogačar, Yates’ UAE Team Emirates teammate. Adam Yates’ twin brother Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla) is third overall, also six seconds behind.

Pogačar, meanwhile, earned 12 bonus seconds during Stage 2 to widen his lead over GC co-favorite Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), Vingegaard earned five bonus seconds on the day, and currently sits in sixth place in the yellow jersey competition, 17 seconds behind Yates and 11 seconds back of Pogačar. Stage 2 winner Victory Lafay (Cofidis) is now fourth overall in the GC.

  • Victor Lafay (Cofidis): 65 points
  • Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost): 11 points

Pogačar’s UAE Team Emirates explains why it turned down Tour de France Netflix series

The team leaves the door open for 2023 but cites logistics and less need for exposure when compared to other tour de france teams..

Tadej Pogačar’s UAE Team Emirates squad has explained why it turned the chance to be part of the all-new Tour de France docu-series set to air on Netflix, citing logistical issues and a lukewarm need for added exposure at this point in time. The team has told VeloNews that the door remains open for 2023.

UAE Team Emirates was one of the original eight teams to be shortlisted for the project but it declined the invitation, as reported by VeloNews .

To some, the fact that the winner of the last two editions of the Tour de France would be missing from the series raised questions about the storylines and potential missing gaps in the eight-part project. However, just as with the Formula 1 Drive to Survive series on Netflix, not all of the top teams were involved in the inaugural season.

Andrea Agostini, the team’s chief operating officer at UAE Team Emirates, spoke to VeloNews and explained that while the project had momentum and obvious benefits for the broader cycling world, and some specific teams, it did not fit with UAE’s current position.

Logistics was one concern, especially given the fact that Netflix film crews would follow the teams and go behind the scenes weeks in advance of the race, during the grand tour, and then again after the event.

“What I can say is that it’s a really good project. It could bring a lot of benefits to the cycling world but it throws up a lot of complications for us,” Agostini told VeloNews .

“We agreed with our owners that this wasn’t a priority for us, but maybe in the future, if Netflix leaves the door open for us, then we could jump in, but at this moment it’s not our priority.

“It’s also a matter of logistics. To have a cameraman around you all the way through the Tour de France, before the race, too, and when every team is already full. We have our own camera person, photographer, and media person, so the space on the bus isn’t so big. Sometimes having people from outside, it’s not so easy to manage. There’s no one particular reason, so maybe next year.”

Agostini likened UAE’s stance to that of Mercedes and Ferrari, after both Formula 1 teams decided not to be part of the first series of Drive to Survive. That stance changed at a later date but Agostini pointed to the fact that the Tour de France was stressful enough and that his current squad had a perfect balance internally. It was felt within the UAE team management — and ownership — that the risks outweigh the potential rewards at this point.

“It’s the same with Mercedes and Ferrari in Drive to Survive . We have a great balance right now with staff and riders, and everyone is super happy and motivated. Sometimes introducing something new could be dangerous. We pay a lot of attention to things like this because we’re a perfect machine and the atmosphere is so good. Mauro gives us great direction and we all know our jobs.”

Agostini also pointed out that teams have different priorities when it comes to exposure and publicity. Jumbo-Visma, EF Education-EasyPost, Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl, Groupama-FDJ, Ineos Grenadiers, Ag2r Citroën, Alpecin-Fenix, and Movistar are all set to feature in this year’s series but the majority of those squads have heavy commercial lead sponsorship deals, whereas UAE Team Emirates is state-owned.

UAE Team Emirates also knows that the likely scenario is that Pogačar will be competing for the yellow jersey, and that the attention the maillot jaune naturally brings from the world’s media off-sets the rewards from a streaming provider at this point in time.

“A lot of teams jump in because they need that kind of visibility,” Agostini said.

“We honestly don’t need it. If we’re lucky enough to fight for victory at the Tour again, we don’t need that visibility. I spoke to colleagues [ed., at other teams] a lot before we made a decision and they had the same doubts as me. There’s obviously nothing to hide but it’s really important to have that balance inside the team. Other teams said to me that they understand our position but they don’t have the visibility that we do. There are teams in the Tour de France who have not had the same exposure as us in the last two years, and for them, it’s really important.”
