NOTE: I removed my early theories to avoid confusing new readers. TOS Phaser

TOS Phaser said: Comment: I originally started this thread in another forum because this thread is NOT about "replica props". This thread is about "props". I am new to this forum and not yet fully up to speed on its rules and regulations. So I apologize to all members who came into this thread on or after 21July2022 thinking it is about "replica props". This thread contains/will contain historical information on the original props, in particular the phaser props, that were made by Desilu Studios and then filmed for the television show Star Trek in the middle 1960s. If you have photos, historical records, data or eye witness testimony please "reply" to the original post and share your information. If you want to share your theories, ideas or just talk about the original phaser props - please post them to the thread. In this way we can keep this thread like a reference archive. Thank you. TOS Phaser said: Greetings and Felicitations! I have been studying "Star Trek: The Original Series" hand phasers (P1s and P2s) since the television show was first broadcast in 1966 on NBC. Since there are no longer any prop archives or forums exclusively about Star Trek: TOS phasers available on the Internet - I will take the initiative and start one here. If you have information and photos that can be shared here on this thread under "fair use" please do. I will start the conversation with a brief introduction about the Star Trek TOS Phaser pistol. It all began when Walter M. Jefferies (the future Art Director for Star Trek) was given the assignment to create a new hand held energy weapon that did not look like every other "ray gun" that went before. The first Star Trek "pilot" had "laser" pistols that looked like a western "six shooter". Matt produced two working drawings for the Desilu Prop Department. One covered the "hand phaser" or "Phaser Unit 1" (P1) and the other covered the "Phaser Unit 2" (P2) and the "Phaser Unit 3" (the power pack grip/handle). View attachment 1600003 Source of this drawing: Live Auction Group The first working Hero P2s the Desilu Prop Department (DPD) made are very close to this drawing. In fact one member of the TPZ overlaid a photo of the Greg Jein (GJ) P2 (as it appears now) on a version of this drawing and the photo and drawing lined up almost exactly. View attachment 1600007 Source of this drawing: Live Auction Group The DPD did not make the first working Hero P1s exactly to this drawing. For example the rising sight opens in the opposite direction and the sight screen and the "push buttons" were not illuminated. These drawing are the foundation of any Star Trek TOS Phaser study. In my next post I will continue with the "Black and White" (B&W) P2s. Click to expand...

TOS Phaser said: In order to be able to tell which hero P2 you are looking at - you have to carefully study Episode 5, "The Enemy Within" and Episode 6, "The Man Trap". Specifically the scenes where Kirk and Spock are side-by-side in the shot - pulling off their P2s from their gold pistol belts at the same time and/or holding their respective B&W Hero P2s in the same shot. It would be helpful if I could post screen grabs of these scenes - and the "fair use" clause of US Copyright Law would allow me to do that for education purposes. However - I see no reason to expose this forum to false claims by outsiders when I can communicate what I am trying to say with drawings. The following side-by-side comparison drawing shows two of the B&W Hero P2s that you can see if you carefully watch episode 5, "The Enemy Within". View attachment 1600668 Again these drawings are modified photo composites of two different B&W Hero P2s that you can see in episode 5 even if you do not have "Blue Ray"(TM) disks. Granted these are not screen caps - however you should be able to identify which Hero P2s these poor replica drawings represent by the "tells". I will give you a hint - the P2 on the right appears in both episodes 5 and 6. The P2 on the left appears in episode 5 not in episode 6. Another hint - Captain Kirk holds the B&W Hero P2 on the right in both episodes. Click to expand...
TOS Phaser said: jonpaul01041, thank you for the offer. (The screen caps you included in one of your YouTube(TM) videos from episode 5 were very helpful in helping me complete my current project.) I will accept your offer - when I order some parts for my DS P2 from you next month. In the mean time - I am trying to establish an archive in this forum that does not infringe the Rights of CBS Studios. "Fair Use" of Copyrighted material cannot be claimed, as a defense, when money is being made directly or indirectly. Though I am not selling anything on this forum at present - other members are and I too am thinking about selling some of my work when I become a "premium" member. Also, this thread has nothing to do with making any money. Click to expand...

Interesting, I only drifted into TPZ a few times before it shut down, same with The Fleet Workshop, so I'm not aware of any of the specifics. Either way, I'm all for more phaser information.

However the "rip off report" pages had the following inflammatory phrases in the title of the main report: "...Star Trek Property infringment, CBS infringment, Paramount infringment..." (incorrect spelling left in my quote). Click to expand...

The Copycats - Star Trek TOS

 prop replica reference guide.

This is an endeavor that was considered for some years but was postponed for  one reason or another. In the years since this hobby began, it seemed  to take on more importance. In the opinions of some, necessity. As a collector of TOS prop replicas since 1978, it became clear that as the hobby grew there needed to be one source where collectors of these replicas could go for reference. Since no one had attempted it thus far, we are pleased to offer one now.

This is a NON PROFIT COLLECTOR CREATED project. The majority of the units pictured here are from the author's personal collection and are NOT for sale. Of the items I do not own, I have used pictures which were found on the Internet and in public domain, as to aid fellow collectors for identification and reference. If I am showcasing a picture that you believe is yours or of your replica(s), please feel free to contact me and I will be happy to either credit you or remove it if you so desire.  But again, the use of these pictures is to aid all TOS replica collectors and not me personally.

This is an attempt to assemble a reference guide for the collector and owner of Classic Star Trek unlicensed prop replicas that were made by various mail order companies from the early 1970’s through the early 2000’s. The reason they were unlicensed at that time is that Paramount had no licensing requirements for such small mail order companies. Paramount made that clear whenever any of these companies would request a license, up to approximately 1994. The purpose of this guide is for the collector to have better knowledge of what company or individual manufactured whatever replica they may have purchased. This is not a “price value guide”. This is only for identification and reference purposes.

When possible, mail order catalogs will be showcased, and of course as many pictures as possible will be included of each replica highlighted. "One hit wonders”, meaning only one item made by one individual, and not produced with any regularity will not be referenced. Nor will there be any prop replicas from any of the Star Trek movies. It is the hope that later on, a separate guide for that category will be established, but at present this is a TOS guide only. Lastly, for those who would be viewing this guide, it is well known with regards to the history of how the original props came to be and who made them. Therefore, that history will also not be covered here.

Cases of rarity will be noted, and this guide will be in chronological order, to the best of the author’s knowledge. Hopefully, this will help the collector and/or owner of these items. These manufacturers are among the pioneers and most visible during the time periods highlighted in this reference guide.

It is also important to note that this is also a tribute to these pioneering craftsmen that made these early TOS replicas. They didn't have "the easy way out" such as with 3D printers that are available today. They weren't able to simply push a few buttons, have parts spit out of a machine, and simply assemble and paint. They worked harder and charged less. Nowadays, some replica makers certainly work less with this new technology, yet charge more than the pioneers did. This guide is also a recognition of their skills, from a time when there was pride in hand craftsmanship no matter what versions or accuracy issues anyone may have with the company's products showcased here. Identities of manufacturers were revealed based on common  knowledge. Of the others that were not named, was due to being unable to reach them to obtain their approval.

Lastly, Star Trek is a registered trademark of CBS Studios Inc. and NO copyright infringement is intended nor meant to be inferred. This again is a NON PROFIT resource and meant ONLY for collector reference.

Star Trek: The Original Series Props – Auction House Archive, Part 1

April 17, 2008 By Jason DeBord

As noted in recent articles, there are many Star Trek “Original Series” (1966-1969) era prop replicas that have been traded in the marketplace as authentic, fooling experts, dealers, and auction houses, as well as collectors.

As a result, there are profound challenges in authenticating the iconic, high value props from this classic television series, especially the Tricorder, Communicator, and Phaser. The current ’state of the marketplace’ poses a significant potential risk for Star Trek collectors who could inadvertently buy an inauthentic piece.

The most productive manner in which collectors can help other collectors to mitigate this risk is by talking to one another, sharing information, and spreading awareness of the ’state of the marketplace’ for these types of props and underscoring the importance of formal and thorough authentication.

I thought it would be productive to catalog and archive information relevant to these props.

I was just this week reviewing some old auction catalogs I acquired, and was surprised at the number of Original Series Tricorders, Phasers, Hand Phasers, and Communicators that have been offered at public auction events.

I am in the process of obtaining scans from other collectors with more substantive catalog collections than myself, but thought I would post a “Part 1” article to begin this process of cataloging the information and photos of these pieces previously offered for sale to the public.

Events denoted [HIGH RESOLUTION] were scanned by me in higher resolution along with full descriptions; others have no photos or lower resolution photos and limited descriptions. Listed chronologically.

Sotheby’s London – “Rock ‘n’ Roll and Film Memorabilia” – September 18-19, 1996 [ HIGH RESOLUTION ]

214. STAR TREK, 1966-1969 A black and white phaser pistol used during the first season; this version of the hand prop was used prior to being designed in color. The phaser (“photon amplification by stimulated emission of radiator”) pistol was worn on the belt of the crew of the Starship Enterprise. The piece is constructed of a hand phaser snapped into a pistol mount, with power pack handle. The pistol has a number of specialty settings which permitted it to be used as a cutting torch, welding tool, etc. $6,000-8,000

215. STAR TREK, 1966-1969 A hand phaser used in the first season designed in black and white. The phaser was small enough to be worn under a shirt, while maintaining a limited range and power output. Extending the working principles of the earlier lasers, the phaser emitted simultaneous beams of differing frequencies or multiples of one frequency. By selecting certain combinations of light frequencies, the hand phaser was used to dematerialize, disrupt, heat, stun and kill. $3,000-5,000

216. STAR TREK, 1966-1969 An original hand Communicator with “spinning moray” used in the television series. Designed as a miniature transceiver used between the ship and planet, the built in transponder served to pinpoint the position of a crew member on a planet’s surface, thus providing transporter coordinates. Activated by flipping open the antenna-grid, the Communicator responded to voice command. $10,000-12,000

217. STAR TREK, 1966-1969 An original Tricorder with “spinning moray” from the series. The Tricorder was named for its three basic functions: record, measure and analyze. Always carried by at least one member of the Starship Enterprise landing party, usually the science officer, it was also used as an audio-visual recorder. In the “City On The Edge Forever” episode, Spock indicates that his Tricorder is capable of recording images by flashing on the “Guardian Of Forever”. $12,000-16,000

In the presentation, Eldrige showcases some of the decisions that went into making each prop replica, areas in which the company added some extra flair to areas not fully complete in the original prop production (like the tiny Type I inside the assault phaser), and collaboration with the Strange New Worlds production team to make that phaser even more accurate than what’s been seen in the series to date.

He also goes into detail about some of the manufacturing limitations that have resulted in a few controversial deviations from accuracy in the  Next Generation tricorder, including the screen dimensions, paint color, and why the device has an unusual raised power indicator.

Factory Entertainment’s medical tricorder replica is up for preorder now (and nearing a sellout, we’re told), while the  Star Trek V and  Strange New Worlds phasers will be announced for preorder in the coming months. The company also announced their Geordi La Forge VISOR replica over the weekend, also up for preorder.
