Welcome to Fairbanks, Alaska

Pikes Waterfront Lodge - Fairbanks, Alaska

On arrival, you’ll be warmly greeted and escorted to the Pikes Waterfront Lodge . Settle in to your river view room and enjoy this terrific setting on the banks of the Chena River. A brief meeting with our expert Alaskan guide sets the stage for the adventures that await.

Exploring Fairbanks + Running with the Reindeer

Situated at the 64th Parallel, Fairbanks is very much a city of the far north. Surrounded by the imposing mountain ranges, pristine waterways and abundant wildlife of Central Alaska, it also boasts a charming downtown, thriving arts community and rich Alaska Native culture. Setting out this morning with our guide, you’ll get to know the varied facets of this vibrant river city. Heading north of town, you’ll also visit the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Viewpoint for an up-close view of this $8 billion engineering marvel. As you stand here watching this silver thread winding its way across the Alaskan wilderness, know that more than a million dollars of black gold is flowing through it every hour.   This morning, we’ll also take you for a private visit to a family farm in the picturesque Goldstream Valley. Learn about the family’s herd of reindeer as you walk with them through the towering conifers. Accompanied by one of the ranch’s owners, a lifelong Alaskan resident, you’ll learn about the natural history of this boreal forest as you follow these amazing creatures; the reindeer are domesticated but not trained, and sometimes decide to take their own route… So bring your spirit of adventure along with your camera!   This afternoon we’ll take you to the Museum of the North, located on the Fairbanks Campus of the University of Alaska. This is the only research and teaching museum in Alaska, and its highly regarded collection of artifacts and specimens showcase the biological diversity and rich cultural traditions of the North. Then it’s on to the Morris Thompson Cultural Center for a private tour led by one of the museum’s docents - followed by an exclusive talk about the Aurora Borealis and life in the 49th State. We’ll end this day with dinner in a local restaurant and then return to our hotel.  Meals B+D

Through the Matanuska-Susitna Valley to Mt. Alyeska

Hotel Alyeska - Girdwood, Alaska

The fertile farmland of the Matanuska-Susitna Valley was first settled by families from the ‘lower 48’ during the New Deal era.  However, as we depart Talkeetna after breakfast and travel into the Valley, we’ll see that it’s still a land of pure Alaska wilderness set amidst towering mountains, waterfalls, surging rivers and abundant wildlife.   We’ll soon arrive at the Musk Ox Farm, a privately arranged visit with an Ice Age mammal that roamed the Earth alongside saber-toothed tigers and woolly mammoths.  Today, this  animal is prized for its dense undercoat that produces qiviut, one of the world’s finest wools.  This not-for-profit farm with the largest herd of musk ox in the world is dedicated to its preservation and to the promotion of qiviut wool as a sustainable agricultural undertaking in the Far North. You’ll see frisky calves and seasoned bulls as you explore the property and learn more about these giant prehistoric creatures.   The Valley’s produce grows to incredible size due to its fertile soil and immense amount of summer sunlight. Today’s lunch will feature this farm-to-table bounty. Later in the afternoon, our visit to the Native Heritage Center will be led by a native Alaskan eager to share their knowledge and passion for Alaska’s history and culture.   We’ll continue along the Seward Highway as it hugs the shoreline between rugged peaks and expansive seascapes.  We’ll arrive in Girdwood and check in to the Hotel Alyeska, where you will enjoy the splendid setting of our resort.  You’ll be provided a ticket for the Alyeska Aerial Tram, departing right from the hotel, for a ride to the 2,300-foot peak of Mt. Alyeska and sweeping views of mountains and glaciers in all directions.  This evening enjoy dinner with your fellow travelers.  Meals B+L+D

Kenai Fjords Wildlife Cruise

This morning’s scenic journey takes you around the eastern end of the Turnagain Arm, the site of one of the world’s most impressive bore tides. Continuing southward, we’ll make our way over the Turnagain Pass, driving through the spectacular Chugach Mountains and the 6-million-acre National Forest that was established more than a century ago. The Turnagain Pass is the highest point along the Seward Highway and offers a great place to witness the tremendous power that glaciers have had on the Alaskan landscapes.   Arriving in Seward, we’ll continue to the harbor to embark our afternoon cruise into the dramatic landscapes of Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park, home to calving glaciers and the massive 300 square mile Harding Ice Field. These waters are teeming with marine wildlife, and engaging guides are onboard to help you identify the animals - including stellar sea lions, harbor seals, Dall porpoises, sea otters and walruses. Humpback, killer and Minke whales also inhabit these waters, and the shores are home to bears and other Alaskan mammals. After this marine adventure, we’ll return to the Hotel Alyeska.  Meals B+L

Alaska Tours

What makes us different?

Best price and value.

We believe in providing you the best value for your money. Price is nothing without service and that’s something we guarantee from the moment you arrive. We have a solid reputation for going well above-and-beyond the call of duty when it comes to your tour needs. Our goal is to exceed your expectations!

Small Group Size

Our small group size allows us to focus more on you, thereby providing a highly personalized and intimate experience. One of the most fundamental elements of all of our tours is to have an extremely small group (usually no more than six guests, except Alaska Iditarod Tours: 11 guests). It may cost a little more, but in the end we know that we would not be able to provide the level of quality experience to a larger group.

Top Notch Guides

The most important aspect of any guided adventure is the quality of the guide. The combined Alaska experience of our guides spans more than 50 years! Our reviews speak for themselves. We know Alaska intimately, and look forward to sharing our knowledge of Alaska with you!
We are owner-operated and we have safely traveled across Alaska for over 25 years. Thank you for considering Wild Alaska Travel and answering the call of the Wild! Laurent Dick, Owner/Operator

“I always wanted to see the Northern Lights but this trip also included seeing Polar Bears in their natural habitat. What a bonus! You will not get 5 star hotels, so don’t expect that. But you will experience the real life of those wonderful people that live in the very extreme northern Alaska. I have traveled a lot and all over the world. And have a lot of stories to tell about guides, but Laurent is up there in my top two. I will travel with Wild Alaska Travel again.”  Nancy Milner, Arizona

Welcome to Alaska

The heart-stopping excitement of a tidewater glacier calving into the sea... the quiet majesty of a bald eagle soaring in a cloudless sky... snow-clad mountains towering over deep blue rivers... forested landscapes and glistening fjords... a legacy of cultural traditions... accessible on adventures that invite you to experience them up close and unhurried all in one epic destination.

Denali national park, "alaska: call of the wild" ~ "grand alaska" ~ "wild alaska".

A flightseeing adventure around the southern side of Denali takes in all possible views on a flight over the vast Alaska wilderness, untouched by modern man. View incredible glaciers, peaks and valleys soaring above open alpine tundra and glacier-fed, braided rivers – with a possibility of spotting cascading icefalls and wildlife such as moose, bear, swans and the occasional wolf or coyote.

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve

"wild alaska".

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve is one of the best habitats in Alaska to see bears. The topography of the park attracts an abundance of wildlife – and when the salmon are running, the brown bears come to the shores of Crescent Lake to fish. From a vantage point on the lake, you'll have an opportunity to see them – and photograph them – up close as they fish and forage along the riverbanks.

One of my greatest pleasures is sharing the history of the great state of Alaska in folk songs and stories...

Steve Hites, "Alaska's Inside Passage"

Tracy Arm Fjord

"alaska's inside passage".

Ice calving, or the thunderous spectacle of ice breaking off from glaciers, is one of Alaska's natural wonders that is amazing to both watch and hear. Tracy Arm Fjord, approximately 50 miles southeast of Juneau, is about 30 miles long – and is home to some of Alaska's largest and most stunning glaciers. The scenery is breathtaking – waterfalls cascade, lush forests border the shores, and the ice glistens with myriad hues. Don't be surprised to find families of seals sunning themselves – and keep an eye open for orcas...

What Travelers Say About their Guided Alaska Tours

Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge was incredible. Everywhere we stayed actually -- each and every place. I really appreciated the regular contact from AdventureSmith, and all the materials you sent were spot-on in terms of preparing for the trip.

Every detail was well-organized and carefully planned, so the complexities of traveling by small bus to boat, back to van, transfer to Kantishna bus, transfer to railroads all worked seamlessly and flawlessly. The guides--all of them, but especially our trip guide and driver--were very knowledgeable, interesting, and fun!

This was certainly one of the top three trips we have taken in our 35 years we have been married. I'm waiting a while to put it into perspective, but it is probably the top one. We got to see beautiful scenery, wildlife, and learned a lot about the places and animals we were seeing.

The destinations were great, but our guide added the most. No skill or talent missing. More than anything else, she made this vacation.

The whole staff were wonderful. Knowledgeable, accommodating, personable... The group dynamics were wonderful and truly enhanced the whole experience.

The trip was amazing in every way. Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge was incredible. Everywhere we stayed actually -- each and every place. The Denali Park Road was an incredible experience; it was beautiful in the rain on the way in and in the sun on the way out. There were no downsides to the trip. Even the weather cooperated beautifully.

Accommodations Review

All accommodations were excellent.  Some were more rustic, but super comfortable rustic.

Meals Review

The food was outstanding, and the snacks provided on the bus rides were so thoughtful. Early morning coffee was available at all the lodges, and the meals were all excellent. I loved all the seafood options the most.

Crew & Guides Review

Leigh L. was outstanding. She was thoughtful, thorough, informed, unflappable, attentive, and super upbeat. The information she provided as we drove was very valuable in that she taught us so much about Alaska. Her organization made everything work smoothly, and if any small problem presented itself she handled it without missing a beat.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

I really appreciated the regular contact from AdventureSmith, and all the materials you sent were spot-on in terms of preparing for the trip.

Traveler Advice

Do the trip!  It will be the trip of a lifetime in so many ways.

We expected the lodges to be in lovely locations, which they were, and the food was extraordinary.

Beautiful lodges, well-equipped for the outdoor adventures, which included canoes and kayaks in Kenai or mountain bikes in Kantishna.  It was really nice that the Kenai Lodge had giant boots and very water-proof pants for all. Our primary interest was to see the wildlife and natural beauty of the Kenai Peninsula and Denali National Park, and we saw everything we had hoped for, and more. The Kenai Glacier Wilderness Lodge delighted us with its isolated lagoon and Pedersen Glacier, otters, seals, black bear and eagles. The road through Denali to Kantishna provided us with many sightings of caribou, moose, 5 grizzlies, a red fox with a squirrel in its mouth, and the lodge was charming. We did not spend much time in Seward or Talkeetna, but the accommodations in both were great.

Lovely little appetizers were a nice treat before dinner. All meals were outstanding!

Leigh L. and driver Jeff were fantastic!  Well-prepared, interesting, fun, patient, knowledgeable, warm: they made the trip even more memorable and special! We all hated to say goodbye to them at the end of the trip! The guides in Kenai (Taylor, Riley, Randy, Rainy, Dina, Mia,) were all enthusiastic, interesting, well-prepared, and willing to quickly look up anything on the slight chance that we asked an unusual question.

Emmet, in Kantishna, spoke of his father's winning Iditarod teams, and showed us how the dogs train in the summer time. His presentation was really interesting and fun.  Everyone was very engaging and clearly loves being there!

We were not able to spend more than 10 days, but if you can stay longer in Denali it would help to break up the long travel days!  Be prepared for any kind of weather since it can change quickly.

Note that this review also includes comments on the traveler’s  Prince William Sound Discovery cruise with AdventureSmith Exploration s.

This was certainly one of the top three trips we have taken in our 35 years we have been married. I'm waiting a while to put it into perspective, but it is probably the top one. I will be recommending the Discovery cruise in particular to my travelling friends! Camp Denali and especially the Discovery crew went out of their way to personalize our experience, make sure we were taken care of, and adjusting daily itineraries to account for the weather. We got to see beautiful scenery, wildlife, and learned a lot about the places and animals we were seeing.

We visited Alaska on our honeymoon 35 years ago and wanted to get back to see Denali and tidewater glaciers (we saw Glacier Bay from large cruise ship). We were among 20 people on the cruise ship outside when that ship visited Glacier Bay, and found the focus on entertainment, shopping, and eating was not our style. The Discovery cruise bypassed everything we didn't care for on the large cruise ship and packed our days with activities and sights that made us want to return to Alaska. The personal service and camaraderie were an added bonus!

We did not anticipate the convenience of the short bus trips at Camp Denali to the daily adventures. We saw plentiful wildlife each day with much shorter drives and were able to get out of the bus for extended appreciation of the park on foot.

Camp Denali - rustic, but nice cabins ("glamping"); wonderful lodge.

Camp Denali - excellent main courses; more emphasis on "health-food" for side dishes than we cared for.

Camp Denali - all guides were very knowledgeable about general interest topics, plus at least one specialty.

Transportation Review

Transportation went smoothly.

Pre-trip communication was timely and accurate. Your packing lists were spot-on. We combined two of the AdventureSmith offerings into a single trip. I usually book trips on my own, after exhaustive internet research. This trip involved combining two trips with limited start and end dates. AdventureSmith helped ensure that the trips were compatible and also worked with me to adjust the itineraries for some self-directed travel at the beginning of the trip. I also appreciate the reassurances that AdventureSmith provided when wildfires threatened some of the transportation plans. They assured me that they were in daily contact with the service providers and that backup plans were available in case there were any disruptions.

DO IT! We spent three years vacation budget on this trip. And it was worth it! The five day trip on the Discovery was a good length. I would have enjoyed an additional day. I think I would have been disappointed with a 3-day/2-night trip, in that it would have been hard to get in enough of the activities that we enjoyed so much. (Like eating an appetizer when you want a full meal).

  • Camp Denali Adventure
  • Camp Denali
  • Prince William Sound Discovery
  • M/V Discovery

The destinations were great, but our guide -- Lena -- added the most, I think.  She was professional when plans had to change because of uncooperative weather, thoughtful in presenting us with certificates at the end, extremely knowledgeable about the local culture, natural history, geography, etc. And she dealt with the oddballs in our group much better than I could have. Horseback riding was possibly the most adventurous day, though the helicopter ride to the dogsleds was a close second.

I wish we'd had more time to hang out in our cabins, and do self-guided adventures from them.  Particularly desirable: for a couple to take out a kayak or canoe and paddle around without need for a guide.

Almost every meal was very, very good.

Lena: A++  Lena is complete.  No skill or talent missing. More than anything else, she made this vacation.

Bring a waterproof cover for your camera. Do a few 5 mile hikes before the trip.

Alaska Wildland Adventures is an incredible company and offer an A++ experience. Christine and her team were perfect. Knowledgeable, accommodating, personable...  I would certainly travel with them again. We also enjoyed the group and we had a great time with the other guests. There were 17 of us with a nice mix of young adults. The group dynamics were wonderful and truly enhanced the whole experience.

Loved them all, particularly the Backcountry Lodge.

Food was great.

Christine was incredible.  As I mentioned above, her whole staff and the staff at the lodges were wonderful. I would offer a particular shoutout to Evan and Kelly.  They both added that something special to the experience.

Be prepared for the cold and rain.

Show Full Itinerary

Welcome to Alaska, the United States’ largest state and one that’s big on wildlife and epic scenery. Your adventure begins in Anchorage where you’ll meet your fellow travellers and local leader for a briefing at 6pm. If you arrive with time to spare, why not stop by the Alaska Native Heritage Center where you'll have the chance to learn more about Alaska indigenous culture and heritage. After your meeting, you may like to head out for dinner with your group or check out the local bars and the town’s live music scene.

In the morning, head north along the Parks Highway to Denali National Park. During the drive keep an eye out for caribou and other wildlife in this amazing, unspoiled environment. On arrival at the park, head to the visitor centre to plan your next day’s activities, then your evening is free to relax – perhaps sit down for dinner with your group and prepare for the days of exploration ahead.

It’s an early start today for an incredible scenic bus journey through Denali National Park. Join your expert certified naturalist guide and driver for a journey on the park road to Teklanika Flats at Mile 25. Keep an eye out for shaggy grizzly bears, moose and full-curl Dall sheep. You'll visit the original park ranger cabin and enjoy an Alaska Native presentation to learn how indigenous Alaskans have used this land for over 10,000 years. You’ll have time to get out of the bus, take photos and take in the incredible views of Denali on a clear day. The rest of the day is yours to hike in the park or simply relax at your hotel.

After breakfast, drive from Denali to Talkeetna and begin your exploration with a leader-led orientation walk around this scenic town that’s famous for its incredible views of Denali and the Alaska Range. Talkeetna was also the inspiration behind the cult-hit television series Northern Exposure. This afternoon is yours to explore your way. Talk to your leader for recommendations for a variety of optional excursions, go for a hike or visit a local brewery and shops. Talkeetna is famous as the jumping off point for mountaineers hoping to summit Denali. It’s also a great place to meet the hardy locals and get to know what it’s like to live in small town Alaska.

Drive to Anchorage and join a leader-led city tour which takes in Lake Hood where float planes take off and land from, Earthquake Park commemorating the 1964 earthquake that shook the whole neighbourhood here into the inlet (the most powerful quake of the century at 9.2 on Richter scale), and downtown Anchorage which is full of restaurants and bars. The rest of the afternoon is free for your own discoveries – your leader will be on hand with tips on amazing things to do. Perhaps try one of the famous Reindeer sausages sold from carts outside the courthouse or rent a bike to explore the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail for incredible views of Cook Inlet and Mount Susitna. You may like to join your group for dinner and hang out with the locals at the iconic Moose’s Tooth Pizza Pub tonight.

Depart Anchorage and drive along Turnagain Arm, an All American Road, famous for its incredible views of Cook Inlet and the surrounding Chugach Mountains. Look out for Dall sheep in the cliffs along the road and beluga whales in the inlet and take some great photographs at scenic stops along the way. In Portage, you’ll drive through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, the longest highway tunnel in North America, to the town of Whittier set between high mountains and Prince William Sound. Take a glacier cruise from Whittier where you’ll see both tidewater and alpine glaciers, and have the chance to spot wildlife like whales, otters, seals and seabirds. Enjoy lunch onboard the cruise as you take in the scenery. After your return to Anchorage in the late afternoon, the rest of the evening is free for you to enjoy your way.

Your tour ends after breakfast and you’re free to depart at your leisure or stay and explore more of Anchorage on your own. If you would like to extend your stay, we would be happy to arrange additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).

On aug 2024.

We had 3 kids in our party and the guide catered to them to ensure the tour appealed to them as well. It was great. We didn't see a bear but we got a deep dive in local life which we thoroughly enjoyed.

We had a GREAT tour! Syd was knowledgeable, kind, and adapted our tour to our interests. We picked this private tour because the cruise excursions did not allow children under 12 on land-based tours to see bears. Not only did we see salmon and bears we also got to go berry picking and explore the beach. My kids loved all of it.

On Jun 2024

It was very nice and our tour guide was nice and interesting.

Loved our driver she was amazing with all our questions, needs and showing us places and sharing the stories. She took us to amazing places and also gave us time to explore them properly.

There were 6 of us on this tour. We were picked up in a beautiful roomy van, enough water bottles for all of us. Our tour guide Syd has lived in Ketchikan for 14 years. She was an amazing guide with loads of knowledge on the land and the native people. We explored the north end of the island all the way to the southern end and lots in between! We hiked to beautiful waterfalls and places that most tourist don't get to see.

28 days | embark on a dazzling south east asian odyssey..

small group tours alaska

South East Asia is brimming with colourful cities, picturesque coastline and delicious regional cuisine, and on this 28-day grand adventure from Bangkok to Ubud, discover all of its hotspots and hidden gems. Through Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, the scale and quality of experiences you’ll have in these magical countries will make for a truly memorable journey. From Ao Nang to Mt Bromo, Yogyakarta to Khao Sok National Park, and the pulsating cities of Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta, you’ll get the essential run-down of the region’s best. Golden temples and saffron-robed monks, soft white sand beaches and bright blue skies, tantalising seafood and a host of shopping spots, this small-group adventure is hard to boot.

Trip overview

  • Discover a different side of Kuala Lumpur – away from the skyscrapers – on a half-day street food tour through the alleyways, uncovering flavours you need to be a local to know.
  • Dive into a nature lover’s paradise at Khao Sok National Park, exploring, hiking, relaxing, and cruising by longtail boat on a limestone cliff-circled lake.
  • Find a slice of paradise on an included sea kayaking trip through the stunning inlets, caves and hidden lagoons of the Ao Thalane mangrove forests.
  • Climbing Mt Bromo in the early hours of the morning is an adventure to remember. If the conditions are right, you'll be rewarded with a dazzling sunset over mist-laden volcanoes.
  • Get behind the scenes of some of Java's fascinating local industries – from coffee, cocoa and palm sugar to traditional Javanese medicine.
  • This trip includes walking, hiking, cycling and kayaking. Whilst most of these activities will not require training or much previous experience, a good level of fitness will help you to get the most out of this trip.
  • You’ll get to travel overland through multiple countries on this trip, which means that there are some longer travelling days on public and private buses – as well as an overnight train – but it also offers a great chance to interact with your fellow travellers, soak up the scenery, catch up on some podcasts or write in your travel journal.
  • Part of travelling with Intrepid means respecting local cultures and sensibilities. That way you get the most out of your interactions with local people and environments. Dress standards in most of Java, Indonesia, are more conservative than other areas of Asia. Conservative dress is also recommended for this portion of the trip. Please refer to the 'What to Take' section of the Essential Trip Information for more details.
  • Accommodation at Seloliman Nature Reserve and near Mt Bromo is in basic guesthouses. Set on the edge of a tropical forest the Seloliman Reserve embraces philosophies of environmental education, and we are sure you will get a good night’s sleep. The next night close to the base Mt Bromo, the guesthouse is selected for its location. The stay is short, as you’ll wake very early the next day for a sunrise hike.

Bangkok has so much to offer those with time to explore, so perhaps arrive a day or so early and take a riverboat to Chinatown and explore the crowded streets, uncover the magnificent Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, wander down the tourist mecca of Khao San Road, or indulge in some Thai massage. After the meeting tonight perhaps gather your fellow travellers together and tuck into some into world famous street food.

Begin the day with a river cruise down the Chao Phraya River to explore the famous ‘khlongs’ (canals) (approximately 1 hour). Life along these canals seems a world away from the chaotic streets of the capital. Pay a visit to Wat Pho, one of the Bangkok temples, with a 46-metre-long gold-plated Buddha reclining inside. Even the feet of this statue are incredible, three metres long and intricately decorated with mother of pearl. The temple grounds are equally fascinating, filled with beautifully decorated stupas, halls, and shrines. No trip to Thailand is complete without an overnight train journey and this evening you’ll head south to Surat Thani, accommodated in air-conditioned sleeping berths (approximately 12 hours). Multi share compartments have bunk beds, with sheets and pillow provided, your baggage travels in the carriage with you and there is a food and drink service available on board.

Set amid hectares of thick jungle, waterfalls, limestone cliffs and topped off with an island-studded lake, the national park of Khao Sok is a nature lover's paradise. Here you’ll have free time to explore one of the oldest rainforests in the world. Walk along the dirt trails that snake through the quiet park, looking out for wildlife as you head for rivers and waterfalls. The flora is also top-notch, with the rare Rafflesia Kerri, one of the world’s largest flowers, only found in Thailand here. Spend a night in a rustic hut amid ancient gnarled rainforest trees.

  • Resort (1 night)

Travel through pristine jungle, rubber and oil plantations before boarding a long tail boat for a ride across stunning Cheow Lan Lake, with one of its islands as your destination. With limestone karst hills rising almost 1000 metres into the air and surrounded by beautiful green waters, the area is incredibly picturesque. Trek to an island cave and discover its eerie stalactites and bats hanging from the ceiling, with subterranean streams at your feet. You’ll enjoy lunch in a local raft-house before having free time to relax, swim or kayak around the lake to search for wildlife – the water is clear and teems with aquatic life, and you might spot hornbills, langurs, macaques or gibbons above water. Return to your accommodation for the night.

  • Khao Sok - Cheow Lan Lake tour
  • Khao Sok - Rafthouse lunch

Head to Ao Nang in a private minivan (approximately 3 hours). On the way, stop at Baan Bor Tor and embarking on a sea kayaking journey. About halfway along the coast between Than Bok Khoranee and Krabi town is a bay of mangroves that might just be the most beautiful bay in Thailand. Surrounded by towering karst formations and many small offshore islands, let the waterways become your pathway as you move slowly through the bays and canyons, discover inlets, caves and hidden lagoons, and check out the local wildlife up-close – the birds overhead and monkeys in the trees. If you do see a monkey, make sure you secure your belongings and any food! Arrive at Ao Nang late afternoon, and enjoy a free evening.

  • Ao Nang - Baan Bor Tor sea kayaking
  • Ao Nang - sea kayaking lunch

Your included sea kayaking trip in Krabi is in double kayaks. The water is usually calm through the beautiful mangrove forests, but you will need to be a confident swimmer to take part.

Famous for the incredible limestone karst scenery of the headland, sun-seekers will fall in love with Krabi's unspoilt beaches, the spectacular cliffs will tempt avid rock climbers, while scuba fans can embark on a Krabi diving adventure. If you love getting out on the water and exploring islands, then consider taking a trip by boat to explore Phi Phi and Khai Nok, islands surrounded by white sandy beach perfect for swimming and snorkelling. The area around Krabi is also home to some of the most spectacular climbing routes around. Whether you're a novice or a pro, being securely tied high up a limestone cliff-face looking down on jungle and crystalline seas is unforgettable. In the evening, look out for a beautiful sunset and consider dining on seafood in a beachside restaurant, followed by a drink in one of the many clubs and bars along on the beach.

The journey by private minibus sees you say goodbye to Thailand and wave hello to the cultural melting pot of Malaysia. The fascinating island of Penang was the first destination of the colonial British in 1786. They invited the Chinese, as well as others from all over Asia, to live on this island in the tropics. Today, this exotic fusion of cultures still exists and the World Heritage site of Georgetown contains a fascinating mix of religious places of worship. When you arrive, you’ll take an orientation walk around the blend of colonial buildings, tumble-down shops and hawker-filled alleyways to get your bearings. The food here might just be the best in Malaysia, so seek out some food stalls with your leader, and get a taste of this food paradise on an included Hawker food tour. Sample some local specialties such as Nasi Kandar, Penang Laksa, and Char Kway Teow.

  • Penang - Hawker food experience

Today's driving will be about 7 hours including border crossing and breaks

This morning you’ll take a half-day sightseeing walking tour around Penang and Georgetown, soaking up the relaxed pace of life and the mix of cultures on show in this heritage area. See the original 19th century shophouses, the street markets, and the strong cultural and religious identity still on display in each neighbourhood – Little India, Chinatown or the Muslim Quarter. Check out the street art that adorns the walls and stop by a clan jetty. Clans were formed by 19th century immigrants, banding together based on the area of China that they came from, and they built rival waterfront societies on wooden jetties. You’ll also pay a visit to Thai and Burmese temples, and see Kek Lok Si Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in South East Asia. You’ll have this afternoon free and, aside from sauntering along the interesting streets (or hoping in a trishaw for a ride that will take you back in time), you might want to see the clan house of Khoo Kongsi. Check out the ornate carvings on the walls, roof and pillars, and maybe see more Chinese architecture in the memorably blue Courtyard House of Cheong Fatt Tze, a fabulously wealthy merchant. Don’t forget to feast on the island’s culinary delights tonight.

Continue south on the local train to Kuala Lumpur (approximately 4 hours). This is a great opportunity to try and chat with the locals and maybe get some tips out of them for your next destination. Kuala Lumpur, the cosmopolitan capital of Malaysia, is affectionately known as KL and you'll almost always hear locals refer to it by its acronym. Communities of Indian, Chinese and ethnic Malay people mingle peacefully, allowing travellers to get the best of all three worlds. KL has grown from a sleepy little village to a skyscraper-lined multi-million-peopled metropolis. The city can seem vast, but the main focus is the traditional core of the old town (the former colonial centre), the luxury hotel and shopping mall district of the Golden Triangle, and bustling Chinatown and Little India. Follow your leader on an orientation walk near the hotel and in the evening follow the Bukit Bintang Walkway and see the Petronas Twin Towers lit at night. You’ll be incredibly spoilt with the breadth and quality of dining options on offer. From simple-street side fare that attracts queues of customers eager to try the latest dish said to be the best around, to seriously high-calibre, world-class cuisine.

  • Kuala Lumpur – Leader-led orientation walk

Enjoy a free day today for your own exploration! Perhaps visit the National Monument (commemorating those who died in Malaysia's struggle for freedom and based on the Iwo Jima Memorial in the USA), the vast National Mosque, featuring a bold and modern design, or the Istana Negara (National Palace). You might like stroll Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square), or shop in Suria KLCC (one of Malaysia’s premier shopping destinations) and then head up to the Skybridge & Observation Deck of the iconic Petronas Towers to gain another view on this cosmopolitan city. Lake Gardens is home to a number of sights, including the National Planetarium and the superb Islamic Arts Museum. Or if you are more active, you may like to join a bike tour and cycle through the history and modern life of KL. In the evening you may wan to experience the multicultural mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures through sampling some of its best food. Walk around local neighbourhoods and visit local grocers and street vendors. Your leader will be on hand making suggestions to help you make the best of the day.

Transfer by local bus to the old port town of Melaka (approximately 3 hours). Back when Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore left little impression on a map, the historic city of Melaka was the most important trading port in Malaysia, attracting Chinese, Indian, Dutch, Portuguese and British traders. These visitors sought wealth or an opportunity to control the Straits of Malacca, a vital trading route between the Indian and Pacific oceans, which lead to 400 years of colonial rule. Today, Melaka's wealth of historical sites reminds visitors of times gone by, and its multicultural past is revealed in its distinctive cuisine. Like Georgetown, the Melaka was declared a World Heritage Site in 2008, and like its Penang sibling, the city is a harmonic mix of cultures, a place where colonial buildings sit next to Chinese shophouses and temples.

Today you’ll get to know this port city better with a quaint trishaw tour along the narrow winding streets. You’ll admire Chinatown's unique Peranakan architecture, get a taste of old Melaka, and learn about the ancient spice trade. Take in sites such as Harmony Street (so called because it contains the prayer houses of Malaysia's three main faiths), and stop by a mosque, Chinese Buddhist Temples, and a traditional Muslim house-museum. In your free time this afternoon there are plenty of historic sights and museums to check out. From 17th century Dutch buildings and ships, to museums that showcase the local history of ethnic Chinese-Malays, the travels of diplomat and explorer Zheng He, and even a museum that focuses on concepts of beauty in different cultures. If you’re looking to get more active, then you could perhaps jump on two wheels for an Eco Bike tour around the city or see Melaka from a different perspective with a boat tour along the river.

Travel by local bus to the last stop on this incredible journey – Singapore (approximately 5 hours). Singapore has few areas untouched by modernisation, however wandering the streets of Little India and Chinatown is a great way to see the old parts of the city. To explore further, check out the renowned shopping precinct of Orchard Road, or stop by Raffles to experience the old world charm of a Singapore Sling. An evening in Singapore is not complete without a stroll along Clarke Quay, or even a river cruise to learn more about the fascinating history of this city. Your accommodation tonight is a centrally located hotel, perfect for easy exploring. Whatever you choose today, maybe gather together your fellow travellers for a celebratory drink or meal as your Bangkok to Singapore adventure comes to an end.

Some rooms in tonight’s accommodation are internal and do not have windows. Border crossing into Singapore can be slow, so some patience at the border would go a long way.

Take a short flight from Singapore to Jakarta to start the next part of your adventure. Arrive in time for a welcome meeting with your new leader and fellow travellers at 6pm. If you get in a little early why not check out some of Jakarta's interesting museums, such as the Wayang (puppetry), Balai Seni Rupa (fine arts) and maritime museums. The National Museum is great for first-time visitors. For a city monument, check out the Monas (National Monument) dedicated to the spirit of the Indonesian people.

As this is a combination trip, your group leader and the composition of your group may change at this location. There will be a group meeting to discuss the next stage of your itinerary and you're welcome to attend, as this is a great chance to meet your new fellow travellers. You will be unaccompanied on this flight but you will be transferred to/from the airports.

Familiarise yourself with the city on a full-day tour of Jakarta with your local leader. Take in Sunda Kelapa port – where the Dutch first landed, temple-filled Chinatown and the old town of Batavia. See Si Jagur – an old Portuguese cannon ornately decorated with a disguised meaning. Visit a Chinese mansion (Chandra Naya) and gain an insight into the beautiful Peranakan architecture. Wander Fatahillah Square, then explore the religious side of the city at Cathedral Church and Istiqlal Mosque – the largest mosque in South East Asia. Tonight, you’re free to find some delicious local eats – just ask your leader!

  • Jakarta - City tour

This morning, take a train to Bandung – a former Dutch city which now boasts a thriving art, shopping and cafe scene. When you arrive around lunch time, you’ll head out for a street food crawl at the Paskal Food Market. Maybe try some satay skewers, gado-gado (a traditional Indonesian salad made from boiled eggs and vegetables) or roasted chicken with rice and vegetables. After, walk off the full belly with a heritage walk through Braga Street – once the centre of local development, this street was home to the first shopping arcade in Bandung, with lots of art deco buildings, shops and a cinema. Sit down for a cup of coffee at a 100-year-old cafe here and watch the world go by.

Take a walk around the craters with your leader, then head to the Ciater Hot Springs. Along the way, visit a local tea plantation to learn about the tea industry in Java, then continue to the hot springs for a relaxing soak to soothe the muscles. Later, you have a free afternoon and evening back in Bandung.

From batik workshops to the nearby Hindu and Buddhist temples, Yogya offers a great array of cultural avenues to explore. When you arrive, you’re free to explore at your own pace – just ask your leader for recommendations.

Your travel time today will be approximately 5 hours.

Rise early to avoid the crowds at Candi Borobudur – the largest Buddhist structure on earth. This UNESCO World Heritage site is set in a tranquil park and as you approach, you'll see the temple rise before you, looming among tropical foliage. With your local guide, follow the route of ancient pilgrims, circling the mandala-shaped structure from the early realms towards Nirvana. After, you have a free afternoon. You might like to visit one of Yogya's other heritage temples – Prambanan Temple is the largest Hindu complex in Java. Tonight, perhaps catch a performance of the Ramayana Ballet – your leader will be able to check dates and availability for you.

Travel by train, then minivan to Seloliman Nature Reserve today. This peaceful reserve sits on the slopes of the sacred volcano, Mt Penanggungan. When you arrive, you’ll meet some of the volunteers working at the Seloliman Environmental Education Centre and learn about what they do here. For lunch, sit down for some delicious, locally grown organic produce cooked by their staff. The centre's accommodation is atmospheric, even with open-air bathrooms built in harmony with the surrounding forest, so take this opportunity to relax this afternoon. This is a beautiful spot to appreciate nature, sit under the stars as the sun goes down and spend an evening technology-free!

  • Guesthouse (1 night)
  • Seloliman Nature Reserve - Environmental Education Centre Visit
  • Seloliman Nature Reserve - Environmental Education Centre Lunch
  • Seloliman Nature Reserve - Environmental Education Centre Dinner

Your travel time today will be approximately 5.5 hours.

Tour accommodation tonight is in basic bungalows, with very simple bathroom facilities. Due to the jungle location, there are often many insects, so make sure you bring insect repellent.

Join the reserve staff on a walk around the property this morning, learning about the local environment and the Javanese tradition of herbal medicine. You'll gain an insight into the region’s flora and fauna, traditional farming methods, rice production and the mini hydroelectricity plant. Finish up with a traditional jamu demonstration and a tasting of this Javanese herbal medicine. Then, travel to Mt Bromo – the homeland of the Tenggerese. The still-active volcano – standing at 2329 m – is the most well-known of the Tengger massif. Retire early tonight in preparation for tomorrow's early start.

  • Seloliman Nature Reserve - Guided Walk & Herbal Drink Tasting

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours. Your walking time will be approximately 2.5 hours. Your accommodation tonight is in villas, each with two rooms, a shared lounge room and a shared bathroom.

The jeeps used today are not fitted with seat belts.

Your early start today (around 3 am) will be well worth it! First, drive to a lookout point in jeeps to catch the sunrise over the sea of sand. After, you’ll climb up to the volcano crater to take a peek inside – the ascent is not too difficult (approximately 45 minutes), but it can be very cold, so don't forget to bring extra layers of clothing. It's also worth bringing a scarf to cover your nose and mouth, as it can get dusty. Return to the hotel to freshen up and then depart midmorning to Kalibaru in a private minivan, stopping for lunch along the way. Tonight, you’re free to relax by the pool or perhaps indulge in a local massage.

  • Mt Bromo - Sunrise climb

Mt Bromo is one of the highlights of the trip but it’s very popular, so during holiday periods expect it to be crowded. At times of increased volcanic activity, the crater of Mt Bromo is closed. There may be amendments to your sunrise hike and this portion of the trip depending on necessary safety precautions.

Head out early this morning to tour some nearby coffee and cocoa plantations. You'll see how coffee is dried and if there’s time, how cocoa is fermented. Before you set off, enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea and snack on fried bananas – yum! Travel by minibus to the far eastern end of Java – Gilimanuk. There is often a lot of heavy traffic on this stretch of road as it's the main entry point for Bali, so there may be some delays. Next, you'll board a ferry across the Java Strait, then another minibus for a journey along the west coast of Bali to Pemuteran – your destination for the next two nights.

  • Kalibaru - Coffee and Cocoa Plantation Tour

Enjoy a relaxing day in this gorgeous beachside location. Maybe start the day with a yoga class and then explore the local area at your own pace. About our Small Group Tours - Guided Camping Trips

Our guided small group tours travel to Alaska’s National Parks and protected areas and feature the perfect blend of camping at established campgrounds, mixed with indoor accommodations. Each trip includes world class outdoor activities and opportunities for customization of your trip experience.

Explore Alaska with like-minded people who enjoy the benefits of traveling with a small group and knowledgeable guide while actively experiencing Alaska. Enjoy comfortable camping to up your outdoor experiential exposure, with occasional nights at a hotel or lodge, while actively exploring Alaska on a variety of activity driven multi-sport tours .

What Our Small Group Tours Include

Alaska Outdoors' tours include a full time, professional guide, campground and park entrance fees, occasional indoor accommodations at a hotel or lodge, comfortable transportation, top quality camping equipment and all but two or three excellent meals per trip. These meals are taken at restaurants in order to take advantage of local cuisine (the sea food is very good) and for the ease of logistics.

If you wish to sample some of the additional activities available, these can usually be arranged in the field by your guide and common credit cards are generally accepted.

Not included are hotel accommodations before and/or after your trip, optional activities, alcoholic beverages, and guide gratuities.

We'll pick you up at around 9:00 am at the Anchorage location of your choice. We will recommend a variety of accommodation options depending on your budget and interests and can help you make reservations. Your tour will end when we drop you off between 5:00-5:30 p.m. at the Anchorage location of your choice on your final tour day.

Camping Tours

While camping, our small group tours camp in and near Alaska's national parks and protected areas at established camping areas. Our days are filled with exploration and adventure as we enjoy the greatest multi-sport adventure tours in Alaska. Our evenings continue with the luxuries of camp life; marshmallows by the campfire, evening walks through the woods, and beautiful Alaskan sunsets shared with new friends.

The camaraderie that develops among a small group while camping in the outdoors can’t be beat. Travel to Alaska with Alaska Outdoors camping tours and discover a wild and natural place without the confines of rigid itineraries and walls to insulate you from the Alaska you came to experience.

All of our trips feature excellent hiking opportunities each day. Hike along crystal clear creeks, view spawning salmon or climb towering mountains for sweeping views. Exploring Alaska by foot is one of the most rewarding experiences available in Alaska.

Multi-Sport Tours

In addition to the activities that are included in our tours, each trip features open activity days for you to choose what you would like to do. Hiking is always a terrific option. There are also additional activities available offered locally by the tour operators that are the local experts of the places we visit. Of course, we have our favorite activities based on years of experience and will gladly make recommendations. We'll bring you directly to the tour operators (they know us well) and can even get you a discount most of the time. Our experience has been that this approach to travel in Alaska is very cost effective, and it allows you to customize your tour as you wish

Most Alaskan tour companies include some of these same activities in their itineraries. They then contract with local companies to conduct the trip and pass the cost (and more) along to you. They do this in order to offer an “all-inclusive trip”. What you get is an overpriced tour with a rigid itinerary and no opportunity to explore at your leisure.

See our individual tour descriptions for optional tour prices and compare with other tours. You will find our trips to be an excellent value.

Some of the additional adventure tours available depending on your chosen itinerary:

  • White Water and Scenic River Rafting
  • Sea Kayak to the face of a glacier
  • Mountain Biking- great single track
  • World Class Ocean and River Fishing
  • Glacier Trekking and Ice Climbing
  • Flight Seeing- among the largest mountains in the world
  • Wildlife / Glacier Cruises- to see whales, calving glaciers…
  • Explore an abandoned ghost town

Feel like going for a hike? Go for a hike. Want to go flight seeing and land on a glacier? Go for it! Your guide will offer suggestions as well as make all of the arrangements, leaving you free from the hassles of researching, booking and logistics. We know this great land well and will enrich your experience with our knowledge and skill.

Alaska Outdoors' guides are experienced and professional. They are certified in first aid and CPR and are knowledgeable of Alaskan natural and cultural history. They will go out of their way to ensure that your trip is seamless, enriching, and fun. Your guide will act as your resident expert and you can count on them to take great care of you.

  • Campgrounds

We utilize established campgrounds near and within parks and protected areas as our base camps while camping. We select campgrounds based upon their scenic beauty and secluded nature. Many of our camping areas have running water; others are a bit more rustic with clean outhouse style facilities. Pay showers are often available, but not always. In addition to camping, each trip features the occasional stay at a hotel or lodge.

  • Transportation

A comfortable full size 15 passenger van equipped with cloth interior and climate control will be courteously driven by your guide. Since our group numbers are low (Max 10) everyone will have a window seat with plenty of room to spread out while traveling. On travel days we stop for photographs, wildlife sightings, lunch, and short hikes in route to our destination.

We use heavy duty box style (enclosed) trailers to haul our camping equipment and your luggage.

Many tour companies in Alaska transport their heavy equipment (and your luggage) on the roof of their vans on roof racks. We believe from experience that putting this much weight on the roof creates an unstable driving condition and an unnecessary road hazard.

Our heavy-duty trailers are more secure, weather proof, animal proof, and are easier to load and unload.

Tours that cross Prince William Sound travel the Alaska State Ferry past the massive Columbia Glacier. We’ll drive our vehicle onto the ferry and head to the upper decks where we can relax and enjoy Alaska’s world-famous coastline. The trip past the Columbia is especially exhilarating as we move past a sea of floating ice. If we’re lucky we can see whales, sea lions, seals, and lots of shore birds.

We provide all top of the line equipment.

Our tents are weatherproof, roomy and easy to use. We use new 4 person 3 season tents that are excellent in all weather conditions. Two people will share each tent unless you prefer your own.

Our custom kitchen shelters are a breeze to set up and are fully enclosed with mosquito netting. They are weatherproof and provide protection from the occasionally pesky bugs.

Our propane cooking systems allow us to prepare complete hot meals with ease. We carry a complete collection of kitchen utensils and equipment to prepare an excellent variety of meals in the field.

All you need to bring is a sleeping bag and pad. Or, if you prefer, rent one from us for $25 each or $45 both per trip. Our sleeping bags are rated at 20 degrees, come with a fleece insert and are extra roomy. Our pads are 1 1/2 inch closed cell foam, are very comfortable and practically indestructible.

A detailed packing list suitable to your Alaskan adventure is provided.

Your guide, with a little teamwork from the group, will treat you to a variety of expertly prepared meals. We have worked with excellent outdoor cooks to create menus that are wholesome, hearty, and consistently good. You won’t go hungry. We've even had requests for an Alaska Outdoors cookbook!

Breakfasts are varied and generally consist of eggs, pancakes, French toast, cereals, fruit and the like. Special additions like fresh blueberries, real maple syrup, and good locally roasted coffee are the norm. Our hearty breakfasts will prepare you for the wilderness each day.

Lunches are generally deli style with a wide selection of meats and cheeses, including locally smoked salmon and halibut (the local specialty). Plenty of fruits and vegetables are always available as are crackers, trail mix, dried fruit, nuts etc. Hot soups with bread and salad are featured on some days.

For dinner your chef/guide will treat you to famous fresh Alaskan seafood, barbeque, and pasta dishes, just to name a few. A typical dinner might include grilled meat with fresh steamed vegetables and wild rice. Or with a flair, Mexican fajitas with all the extras like guacamole, sour cream and fresh salsa. Our meal planners have developed a variety of well-balanced meals that generally include appetizers, a main course, and dessert. Much of our produce is purchased locally from organic farms when in season.

Alternative meal suggestions are encouraged and special dietary needs can be accommodated.
