Is a 3-Night Disney Cruise Right for You?

A 3-night Disney Cruise can be an excellent choice for:

  • First-time cruisers
  • Families with limited vacation time
  • Those on a tighter budget
  • Disney fans looking for a quick getaway
  • Anyone wanting to combine a cruise with a Walt Disney World vacation

However, if you’re looking for a more immersive experience or want to visit multiple ports, you might prefer longer Disney cruise options .

Is a 3-Night Disney Cruise Too Short?

One of the most common questions about 3-night/4-day cruises is whether they’re too brief. The answer largely depends on your expectations and travel style.

First, you should understand how much time you’ll actually have onboard:

  • Day 1 — afternoon/evening only : You’ll typically be allowed to board the ship sometime between 11 AM and 3PM. Once you’re onboard, you’ll have the rest of the day to enjoy the ship.
  • Days 2 & 3 — full days onboard: Spend two entire days onboard the ship (with the option to go ashore for part of the day if the ship is visiting a port).
  • Day 4 — early morning only: Your cruise ends very early on debarkation day. There are no onboard activities; it’s simply wake up, eat breakfast, and leave. You’ll likely be back ashore by 8AM, if not earlier.

With that in mind, here are some pros and cons to consider:

Advantages of a 3-Night Cruise:

  • Perfect for First-Timers : If you’re new to cruising or Disney Cruise Line , a 3-night trip is an excellent way to test the waters.
  • Budget-Friendly : Shorter cruises are generally the cheapest Disney Cruise experience , making them an excellent way to save money .
  • Less Time Off Work : You can enjoy a cruise without using too many vacation days.
  • Ideal for Long Weekends : These cruises often depart on Fridays, making them perfect for a quick getaway.
  • Easy to Combine With Disney World : One week of vacation time and a round trip plane ticket to Orlando International Airport (MCO) gets you a few days at Disney World plus a short Disney cruise from Port Canaveral.

Disney Cruise vs Disney World

Potential Drawbacks:

  • Limited Time to Explore : With only three nights on board, you might feel rushed trying to experience everything the ship offers.
  • Less Time for Relaxation : The shorter duration means you have fewer days to fully unwind and settle into the cruise rhythm.
  • Limited Port Visits : Most 3-night cruises typically visit only one or two ports, which may limit your exploration opportunities compared to longer itineraries.
  • Shorter Entertainment Schedule : You might miss out on some shows or activities that are spread out over longer cruises.
  • Less Time to Build Relationships : Shorter cruises provide less opportunity to form connections with crew members or other guests.

Popular 3-Night Disney Cruise Itineraries

Disney offers several 3-night cruise options, with the most common being Bahamian cruises. Let’s explore the typical itineraries:

3 Night Bahamian Cruise from Port Canaveral

Nassau | Image © Disney

This popular itinerary usually includes:

  • Day 1: Departure from Port Canaveral, Florida (afternoon)
  • Day 2: Nassau, Bahamas
  • Day 3: Castaway Cay (Disney’s private island)
  • Day 4: Return to Port Canaveral (early morning)

The recent opening of Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point means that some 3-night cruise itineraries now include this exclusive destination as part of the trip. In fact, some itineraries only visit Lookout Cay, while others only go to Castaway Cay. Additionally, there are 3-night trips that visit both locations, depending on the schedule.

3 Night Bahamian Cruise from Fort Lauderdale

Itineraries for Disney’s 3-night/4-day cruises from Fort Lauderdale are similar to those from Port Canaveral, but they are more convenient for travelers coming from Miami or other South Florida locations.

Map showing the route of a 3-night Bahamian Cruise starting in Fort Lauderdale, with a visit to Castaway Cay and a Day at Sea before returning to Fort Lauderdale

Additionally, Fort Lauderdale may appeal to those who prefer a more relaxed and low-key port experience.

Is There a Difference Between Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale Departures?

While the itineraries are similar, there are a few key differences between Port Canaveral and Port Everglades :

  • Location : Port Canaveral is closer to Orlando and the Disney World parks, making it easier to combine a cruise with a theme park visit. Fort Lauderdale is more convenient for those in South Florida.
  • Ship Options : Port Canaveral typically hosts more Disney cruise ships , potentially offering more sailing dates and ship choices.
  • Pre-Cruise /Post-Cruise Activities : The areas around each port offer different experiences. Orlando has theme parks, while Fort Lauderdale has beaches.
  • Review our articles about Port Canaveral Disney Cruises and Fort Lauderdale Disney Cruises to help you decide which option is best for you.

“Magic at Sea” Cruises

These special cruises, often departing from Australia or New Zealand, typically don’t stop at any ports. Instead, they focus on providing a full Disney cruise experience while remaining at sea. They’re an excellent option for those who want to enjoy the ship’s amenities without the hassle of disembarking at ports.

All Disney World and Disneyland Closures for September 2024

in Disney Parks , Disneyland Resort , Walt Disney World

Crowds in front of Cinderella Castle

Check out everything that will be closed at Disneyland and Walt Disney World this September.

A stunning castle with blue and gold spires stands tall under a vibrant, orange sunset sky. The sun shines brightly, casting a warm glow over the scene. Trees and a neatly manicured garden frame the foreground, evoking a magical Disney-like charm.

Due to the sheer size of the Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts, it can be quite tricky for guests to actually enjoy everything there is to do. With dozens of rides and attractions, as well as several world-class dining and live entertainment offerings, a single-day trip can easily turn into a weekend, week, or month-long visit.

In addition to four theme parks, Walt Disney World is also home to two water parks, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. Both of these parks allow guests to relax and take a break from the often brutal Florida heat.

However, unexpected closures and/or refurbishments are also reasons it can be tricky to map out a day at the Disney theme parks, with the company laying out its plans over the next several months.

Guests visiting the Walt Disney World Resort can expect to miss out on a few attractions this September, though their vacations will still be filled with fun and magic.

Walt Disney World Resort Closures

A jungle-themed boat covered with a tattered canopy marked "Congo Kate" is surrounded by dense foliage at Disney World. The boat contains props like maps, paint palettes, and netting, creating an adventurous atmosphere. Several chimpanzees can be seen on and around the boat, reminiscent of the park's untold adventures.

  • Jungle Cruise: August 26 – October 17
  • Test Track : June 17 – TBD
  • Blizzard Beach : March 17 – November 4
  • Typhoon Lagoon: November 3 – TBD

Guests visiting the Walt Disney World Resort this September should be prepared to see two rides closed, as well as a few entertainment offerings get cut short.

At the Magic Kingdom, the Jungle Cruise will be closed from August 26 to October 17, 2024. The “World Famous” Jungle Cruise is an attraction that works overtime to convince guests they’re actually traveling through mysterious rivers. Along the way, guests will encounter various animal animatronics and stunning “natural” beauties, all while a sarcastic and witty tour guide cracks jokes.

Disney describes Jungle Cruise as follows:

Embark on a river cruise where dangerous beasts and dry wit abound. Board a canopied tramp steamer piloted by your trusty skipper, who will expertly navigate you through some of the world’s most treacherous waters. Steam past lush foliage, butterflies and waterfalls on the Amazon in South America. Glimpse an abandoned camp overrun by curious gorillas on the shores of the African Congo. Watch for angry hippos, hungry lions and “sleeping” zebras along the Nile and be on the lookout for a missing Jungle Cruise vessel and its helpless passengers. As the cruise continues down the Mekong River, you just might learn that the jungle always gets the last laugh. It’s a 10-minute, 10,000-mile journey that you won’t soon forget!

Test Track reimagined concept art

Test Track closed at EPCOT back on June 17, 2024, with the thrill ride’s reopening date unknown at this time. Disney closed the ride a few weeks ahead of the company’s D23 conference, where Disney made several announcements about upcoming theme park projects, one of which was the overhaul of Test Track.

Disney announced it would be redesigning Test Track earlier this year, going back to the drawing board once again for the troubled yet beloved ride. Test Track originally opened at EPCOT in 1999, quickly becoming one of the most popular rides at Walt Disney World.

In 2012, Test Track received a “digitized” makeover, transforming the ruggedness of the ride’s testing facility aesthetic into a new, neon-soaked world evocative of Disney’s Tron films.

Not much is known about the project, but Walt Disney World has promised to deliver a new and exciting experience for both longtime fans and new guests when Test Track 3.0 opens at EPCOT.

There are currently no planned refurbishments and closures for Disney’s Hollywood Studios or Animal Kingdom this September, though Disney certainly has many exciting things in store for these theme parks.

During the previously mentioned D23 event, Disney announced it would construct a brand-new land based on Pixar’s classic 2001 film Monsters Inc., which will reside in Hollywood Studios.

The new area will feature at least one new ride, which will be Disney’s first venture into the world of suspended roller coasters. Disney has not confirmed where this new Monsters Inc. land will be located yet, prompting some fans to worry about how much longer other attractions and experiences, primarily Muppet*Vision 3D, have left at the park.

It’s rumored the new land will take the spot of either Muppets Courtyard or Animation Courtyard.

There are no refurbishments or closures planned for Disney’s Animal Kingdom this September either, but the park will welcome several new rides and attractions over the next few years. Disney dolled out more information regarding the planned reimagining of DinoLand U.S.A., a project the company first unveiled in 2022, revealing a bold new vision for the prehistoric-themed area.

Dinosaurs will soon go extinct (again) as Disney transforms DinoLand into a breathtaking new area inspired by South America.

As part of this overhaul, three attractions will be built: a carousel, a dark ride based on Disney’s Encanto (2021), and a new thrill ride inspired by Indiana Jones. The carousel and Encanto ride will be completely new, but Disney’s new Indy ride will be a reskinned version of DINOSAUR , a terrifying ride that has been thrilling and scaring guests since 1998, the year Disney’s Animal Kingdom first opened.

Again, not much information is known about the new ride’s specifics. It’s assumed Disney will keep DINOSAUR’s track and ride vehicles but replace the frightening dinosaur animatronics with a new Indiana Jones adventure.

Disney World describes DINOSAUR as follows:

A paleontologist recruits you for a secret mission to bring a 3.5-ton Iguanadon back to the present. There’s just one problem—the giant meteor that wiped out life on Earth is on the way!  Board a rugged Time Rover vehicle and set off on a thrilling adventure through a primeval forest filled with life-like dinosaurs. Careen through unpredictable hairpin turns. Dart around a fearsome Velociraptor hunting for prey. Avoid the clutches of a Cearadactylus soaring overhead! As the clock counts down, fiery meteors crash down around you. Will you make your escape before the dinosaurs—and you—become extinct?

Disneyland Resort Closures

Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland park in California

  • Space Mountain : August 5 – September 5
  • Disneyland Monorail: August 12 – TBD
  • Disneyland Railroad: August 5 – TBD
  • Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln: April 16 – TBD
  • Indiana Jones Adventure: September 9 – 13
  • Sailing Ship Columbia: September 23 – 26
  • “it’s a small world”: September 16 – TBD
  • Jungle Cruise: September 16 – October 3
  • Dumbo the Flying Elephant: October 1 – TBD
  • World of Color ONE: September 9 – TBD
  • Animation Academy: August 5 – 29

Guests visiting Disneyland this September can expect to see quite a few closures and refurbishments during their vacations, with several large-scale projects currently happening across the entire resort.

At Disneyland Park, Critter Country, which will reopen as Bayou Country, is still closed as work continues on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is set to officially open in November 2024. The ride is Disney’s replacement for its iconic yet divisive attraction known as Splash Mountain, which closed permanently at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World in 2023.

The decision to close Splash Mountain was incredibly controversial, though it was not all that surprising given the ride’s problematic nature. Splash Mountain took heavy inspiration from Disney’s somewhat forgotten film, Song of the South  (1946).

After decades of controversy for both the film and Splash Mountain, Disney announced in 2020 it would be retheming the legendary water ride.

Disneyland’s Space Mountain closed on August 5 and will reopen on September 5. The Disneyland Monorail and Railroad both closed indefinitely earlier this summer.

Indiana Jones Adventure will be closed for a brief refurbishment on September 9, reopening on September 13. Indiana Jones Adventure is probably one of Disneyland’s most popular and legendary rides, standing tall next to classics such as Pirates of the Caribbean , Haunted Mansion, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Disney describes the thrilling attraction as follows:

Follow Indy’s footsteps into the crumbling Temple of the Forbidden Eye past intricate booby traps. Inspect carvings and frescos that tell the story of Mara, a powerful deity who promises great treasures—and vengeance to those foolish enough to gaze into its all-seeing eyes. Brave Unimaginable Perils Board a rugged troop transport and enter the Chamber of Destiny. Confront inconceivable dangers, like precarious precipices over molten lava, screaming mummies, swarms of giant insects, spear-throwing wraiths, collapsing bridges, slithering snakes—and a massive rolling boulder.   If you find yourself in jeopardy, only one man is brave enough—or crazy enough—to save you… Dr. Jones!

As for what’s in store for the coming years, both Disneyland and Walt Disney World have several exciting projects in the pipeline, with work beginning very soon. During Disney’s D23 event, the company announced two new attractions would be developed for Avengers Campus in Disney California Adventure.

This Marvel-themed area opened in 2021 and invites guests to live out their superhero or supervillain fantasies as they come face to face with some of the most iconic and memorable faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe ( MCU), such as Loki, Spider-Man, Thor, Black Widow and most recently, Deadpool.

The two new Avengers rides were confirmed to be Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab. The former is a multiversal dark ride that sees guests take on King Thanos, a variant of the hulking purple villain who won during his battle against the Avengers. Guests must buckle up and strap in as a wide range of Marvel heroes attempt to take out Thanos once and for all.

Stark Flight Lab is a more tame experience , allowing guests to explore the possibilities of Iron Man flight technology. Using a system similar to that of Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey at Universal Studios, Stark Flight Lab will transport guests using massive robotic arms, propelling them several feet above the ground.

Disney describes the attraction as follows:

If you’re up for another mission, Tony Stark has one for you. And you know Tony, he always wants to try something new and exciting, and it’s going to make you feel like a Super Hero yourself. With the just announced Stark Flight Lab , you’re going to sit in two-person pods and deploy to a test station. Then a robot arm grabs your pod and starts whirling you around in a simulated flight.

The Disneyland Resort will also soon welcome its own version of Pandora – The World of Avatar, with Disney sharing more information on the exciting upcoming expansion during its D23 event.

Much like Pandora at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disneyland’s Avatar land will be a breathtaking new area, allowing guests to escape into a fully realized fantasy world filled with new rides, attractions, and experiences based on James Cameron’s epic sci-fi franchise.

The exact location of Disneyland’s Avatar expansion is unconfirmed at this time, though many assume the new land will reside in the unused space part of the Disneyland Forward project , an ambitious billion-dollar development that would see multiple updates come to the Disneyland resort over the next decade.

Will you be visiting Walt Disney World or Disneyland soon? What upcoming Disney parks project are you most looking forward to?

Here’s what it’s like to take a Nile cruise in 2022

Plan your trip of a lifetime in Egypt with this guide to cruising on the Nile © Lauren Keith / Lonely Planet

Egypt is nothing short of a miracle. Though the forbidding Sahara encroaches from every direction, the Nile River splashes a verdant green ribbon through the country, sometimes managing to push the desert sands only a few hundred feet back from the riverbank.

One of the world’s longest and most legendary rivers, the Nile travels more than 6500km (4100 miles) through five countries, but it’s most closely connected with Egypt. And indeed, so much of Egyptian history has unfolded along the Nile that nearly all of the country’s major cities and ancient tombs and temples are located along this lush life-giving artery.

The ancient Egyptians used the river as a highway, dispatching trade and military expeditions and toting statues of their gods between temples. The 5th century BCE Greek historian Herodotus famously called Egypt the “gift of the Nile,” and even now, millennia later, cruising the Nile is still the best way for travelers to see Egypt’s gifts for themselves.

Ready to embark on the trip of a lifetime? Here’s what you need to know about picking the best Nile river cruises.

Colourful hot-air balloons fill the sky over a landscape of desert to the right and greenery to the left

Why are so many travelers talking about Egypt in 2022?

Nowhere else in the world is the past so intertwined with the present than in Egypt, and 2022 promises to be a blockbuster time to experience them both.

Lonely Planet named Egypt one of the top 10 countries to visit this year , and the long-anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum is expected to open in November to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun , the famous golden pharaoh and “boy king.”

September marked 200 years since the Rosetta Stone was translated, which revealed the meanings of the hieroglyphs and recaptured knowledge that had been lost for centuries. New archaeological discoveries continue apace in Luxor, Saqqara and elsewhere that keep rewriting history.

Tourism hit a record high in Egypt in 2019 and was expected to grow even more in 2020, but we all know what happened then. Like many places, tourism in Egypt has now entered recovery mode, making the coming months a great – and still relatively quiet – time to visit.

Some Nile cruise companies continued construction projects that have seen new boats launched on the river, including the August 2022 debut of the Viking Osiris , a brand new 82-passenger vessel built specifically to navigate the Nile.

Why you should take a Nile cruise when you visit Egypt

While cruises might get a bad rap elsewhere in the world, traveling by boat on the Nile is a time-honored tradition that stretches back to the pharaonic era.

Along the riverbanks, life carries on in the way that it has since time immemorial: mudbrick houses poke out from behind the foliage, children wave excitedly at passing ships, a lone man paddles a blue-painted canoe piled high with alfalfa for his hungry livestock, palm trees heavy with golden dates sag as they await the harvest.

In a fast-paced world, opportunities to simply sit back and watch life glide by are few and far between. Sitting outside on the Osiris ’s balcony traveling at the speed of the river, I felt like I was watching a slow travel TV show – at once both an outside spectator and also completely immersed in it.

In ancient times, mastering the river helped rulers unite the country, and most temples are built within easy reach of the water. Sure, Egypt’s modern-day road and rail network can transport you to these temples overland, but if you skip a cruise on the Nile, the magic of the journey will certainly be missing.

How to choose a Nile cruise itinerary

The vast majority of Nile cruises operate in both directions between Luxor and Aswan in southern Egypt, making stops in Edfu, Kom Ombo and sometimes other small towns.

Which Nile cruise you pick depends on the usual two travel constraints: your budget and your time. Certain boats sail only on certain days, and Nile cruises can be as short as three days, but more commonly last five days.

Most luxury cruises on the Nile, including Viking’s Nile cruises, require signing up for a full Egypt-wide itinerary that starts and ends in Cairo , an excellent option for first-time visitors.

With little signage at historic sites and prices always open to negotiation, Egypt is a tricky place for independent travel. Unless you want to spend your precious vacation time bargaining with taxi drivers and tour guides everywhere you go, it’s best to join a tour for your first visit and leave the logistics to someone else.

What I liked in particular about Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary is that it includes two unusual stops that aren’t standard ports of call for most Nile cruises.

The ship travels north of Luxor to Qena for passengers to disembark and visit the gorgeous Temple of Hathor at Dendera , where the ceilings have recently been cleaned, exposing beautifully painted zodiac symbols and the warped body of the sky goddess Nut, who swallows the sun every night and gives birth to it the next morning.

The boat also stops in Esna for the Temple of Khnum , a small but wonderfully preserved structure. Look up to spot the column-topping capitals, each of which has a colorfully decorated, unique bouquet of palm fronds, bunches of grapes, lotus flowers and papyrus shoots.

In Luxor, you’ll get private access to the show-stopping tomb of Nefertari – arguably the most beautiful burial site in the entire country (and certainly the most expensive at LE1400, about US$72) where nearly every square inch is painted in stunningly vibrant bas-reliefs – as well as the chance to see the stark dichotomy of Egypt’s landscapes from the sky in the basket of a gently drifting hot air balloon.

Tours of the temples and tombs are led by local expert Egyptologists who explain and translate the meanings of the hieroglyphs before your very eyes.

A few companies offer Nile cruises from Cairo, but these sailings are rare, usually operating just once a month – if at all – and take significantly longer because of the distance involved. But you’ll get the chance to check out off-the-beaten-track tombs and temples between Cairo and Luxor that see few visitors.

A view from within a small cruise ship out onto the Nile River in Egypt

What is it like on board the Viking Osiris ?

Decked out in a sleek Scandi color scheme of blond wood and blue textiles that are drenched in natural light thanks to huge floor-to-ceiling windows across much of the ship, the Viking Osiris is an oasis of calm that’s a treat to return to after a long and dusty day of exploring.

The cruise ship has 41 cabins across three decks, plus two upper levels with an indoor/outdoor dining space with windows that fold away for al fresco evenings, a cozy bar and lounge with a resident piano player in the evenings, an infinity-style pool at the back of the boat and a sun deck for days of lazy lounging.

Travelers can check out books from the on-board library’s exquisite collection to read up on Egyptian history on their voyage.

The guest rooms are surprisingly spacious, with comfy hotel-like beds, plenty of wardrobe and storage space, and good-sized bathrooms. Many staterooms come with balconies.

The ship is partially powered by solar panels, and you can see how much electricity is being generated by the sun as well as the carbon dioxide savings on a screen inside.

What travelers should know before visiting Egypt

Almost all nationalities need a visa to visit Egypt , which you can get on arrival at the airport or apply for online in advance if you’d rather skip the line. The cost of a single-entry Egyptian tourist visa is USD$25, payable in cash at the airport or by card online.
