Celebrity Edge

Debuted in December 2018, the 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge stands out for its modernity. The Edge is dressed to the nines in contemporary designs and features a diverse array of technologies, amenities, activities and dining venues on board. Passengers can delight in the ship's rooftop garden, take a dip in one of many ocean-facing pools, work up a sweat on the jogging track or relax at the on-site spa.

You'll find plenty of evening entertainment options, too, including themed bars and lounges, a club and a theater showcasing a variety of productions. The Edge was the first Celebrity ship fitted with the Magic Carpet – the line's cantilevered venue at sea that travels 13 stories. The open-air venue can be repositioned alongside several decks, allowing it to transform from a live music venue to a bar to an exclusive specialty restaurant, depending on its location.

For dining, passengers have 29 options to choose from. These include four main restaurants and specialty options serving a range of cuisines, from sashimi to French bistro classics. After a bite to eat, take a break and relax in your modern stateroom or suite. Every room offers technology that allows guests to control temperature, service and lighting with a touch screen. What's more, with a roughly 2-to-1 passenger-to-crew ratio, service across the ship will be spot on.

Celebrity Edge makes sailings across Europe, Asia, Australia and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip: On Edge Series ships, park yourself at the Sunset Bar with a spicy margarita every evening – it’s the best spot on the ship to watch for the fabled green flash. – Skye Sherman, Contributor

Seven Seas Explorer

Regent Seven Seas Explorer debuted in 2016. It's one of the largest vessels in the fleet, welcoming up to 746 passengers. The ship makes service a top priority, with 548 crew members on board. According to past cruisers, the staff was friendly and attentive.

Travelers were even more impressed by the all-suite accommodations, which are some of the largest offered among ocean liners. All 373 suites include spacious balconies, marble bathrooms, walk-in closets, interactive flat-screen TVs and unlimited Wi-Fi.

Another high point: the cuisine. Explorer offers eight dining areas that range from the casual Pool Grill to Asian creations at Pacific Rim. As part of the 'Regent Experience,' all specialty dining is included in the cruise fare.

Outside the cabins, guests can spend their days participating in cooking demonstrations, lounging by the pool or relaxing in the library. At night, entertainment options include casino games, cocktail lounges and shows in the Constellation Theater. Complaints about this ship are few and far between, though some reviewers felt the entertainment could be more impressive.

The best perk, according to recent passengers? All shore excursions are included. Seven Seas Explorer sails to destinations in Alaska, Asia, Australia and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Pacific Rim is a favorite dining venue among cruisers, with its Asian-inspired cocktails and cuisine offering a selection of dishes from Thailand, Korea, China, Vietnam and Japan. Cruisers seeking an intimate experience should consider booking a trip aboard Silversea's Silver Moon, one of the line's newest ships. Debuted in June 2021, Silver Moon accommodates just 596 passengers. And with 411 crew members, travelers can expect an attentive experience.

One standout amenity is the Sea And Land Taste (S.A.L.T.) program. The dining experience aims to introduce passengers to their destinations through food. On board, the S.A.L.T. Lab offers travelers the chance to participate in tastings and workshops, while the S.A.L.T. Kitchen provides a unique dining experience. On shore, foodies can book special cuisine-focused excursions through the program. Not an adventurous eater? Not to worry. The ship is also home to a fitness center, a living room that hosts live entertainment, a library, shops, a salon and two movie theaters. The main pool area is expansive, featuring ample lounge seating, a retractable roof and a poolside bar. At night, the ship screens poolside movies under the stars.

Seabourn Quest differs from the line's newer ships in terms of accommodations, as it offers some Ocean View Suites with porthole windows instead of verandas. However, all cabins still come equipped with amenities like flat-screen TVs, designer toiletries, personalized stationery, Egyptian cotton linens and in-suite bars stocked with your preferred refreshments.

Outside your suite, you can enjoy a range of pursuits, such as spa and salon treatments, free fitness classes, a nine-hole putting green and two swimming pools. Additionally, Seabourn Quest offers complimentary water sports equipment rentals at its Watersports Marina in select destinations.

Top Sites and Attractions in Vancouver

Gastown district.

Vancouver’s oldest neighborhood is also its busiest. As the home to hip restaurants, chic shops, and lively bars, Gastown attracts its fair share of young locals and visiting tourists. You can easily spend an afternoon walking down its quaint, cobblestone streets, where you’ll find plenty of historic landmarks, boutique shops, and outdoor cafes to keep you entertained.

As the third-largest Chinatown (after San Francisco’s and New York’s), Vancouver’s Chinatown is an essential stop for any Chinese cuisine lover or shopaholic. Walk past the golden entrance of the Millennium Gate, squeeze in a lunch at one of the neighborhood’s award-winning restaurants, browse through antique stores, and see the world’s narrowest building, which measures only six feet wide.

Shannon Falls

Immerse yourself in Vancouver’s natural beauty at Shannon Falls Provincial Park, a national park just outside of the city, where you’ll find the third-tallest waterfall in British Columbia. Towering over 1,100 feet above sea level, Shannon Falls is a spectacular sight that can be admired from the boardwalk at the base or by hiking up to an overlook point, where you’ll be surrounded by the cool mist from the raging water.

Where can I eat near the Vancouver cruise port?

Vancouver’s ethnically diverse culture shines through in its multicultural cuisine. A flavorful fusion of African/Indian, Greek/Italian, and Mediterranean/French, as well as fresh seafood, can be found on nearly every menu.

Chefs come to Vancouver from all around the globe, and each brings his or her own culinary heritage and tradition to the fresh seafood and bold flavors of Vancouver’s traditional West Coast cuisine, creating a uniquely flavorful blend that makes Vancouver cuisine renowned around the world.

Granville Island Public Market

At the Granville Island Public Market, you’ll find delightful delicacies of all kinds. Pick and choose delicious items from popular spots like Oyama Sausage Co, featuring mouthwatering salami and cheese selections; Terra Bread, with fresh-made baguettes; or doughnuts at Lee’s. Visit these delicious vendors and hand-select all your favorite items to create the ultimate waterfront picnic.

Head to eco-friendly Forage, which serves locally-farmed menu items and boasts a zero-landfill waste record. The sincere hospitality and top-notch service are noteworthy here. Try the Turtle Valley Bison sirloin or the Whittaker’s nettle farro grain risotto.

Hawksworth Restaurant

If you’re looking for fine dining in Vancouver, dress up and go to chef David Hawksworth’s white tablecloth and crystal chandelier restaurant, Hawksworth. Serving expertly and effortlessly delectable West Coast cuisine fused with Asian flavors and a modern twist, Hawksworth is a dining experience all on its own.

What’s the culture and history of Vancouver?

The city of Vancouver was first inhabited by several Native Canadian tribes. Around the late 1850s, Europeans started moving into the area after the establishment of the town of New Westminster. After gold was discovered in the banks of the Fraser River in 1858, tens of thousands of gold prospectors came to the area. It wasn’t until 1886 that the city of Vancouver was incorporated. It took its name from British explorer George Vancouver, who discovered the area back in 1792. Only a few weeks after its incorporation, the city of Vancouver was burnt down by a brush fire, but was immediately rebuilt.

With the introduction of the California Pacific Railway and the opening of the Panama Canal, Vancouver became a major exporter of grain and lumber and positioned itself as a major economic hub in Canada. It is one of the largest and most populous cities in the country and is known for its diverse community of immigrants. Many art and cultural festivals are held in the city throughout the year, including the Chinese New Year Parade, the Eastside Cultural Crawl, and the annual Jazz Festival. Today, Vancouver’s economy is mainly run by forestry, tourism, oil refining, and mining.

Where can I go shopping near the Vancouver cruise port?

The Canada Place cruise ship terminal is located in Vancouver’s downtown area, where you’ll find the Pacific Centre Mall and Robson Street, which is full of stylish boutiques. It wouldn’t be a true visit to Canada without a stop in the local favorite department store, the Hudson’s Bay Company, where you’ll find everything from clothes and shoes to jewelry, make-up, home décor, and more. While in Gastown, you can look for unique and authentic pieces of Northwest Coast Native and Inuit art at the Inuit Gallery.

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

The currency in Vancouver is the Canadian dollar. Although there is no foreign exchange service at the cruise terminal, you will find several ATM machines. There are exchange services throughout downtown Vancouver, as well as ATMs in hotels, banks, drug stores, and other venues. Canadian restaurants seldom include gratuities in the bill, and it is customary to tip an additional 15% to 20% of the total bill before tax.

Cruisetours

To explore further into Alaska and the Canadian Rockies, you can extend your cruise with a Cruisetour. This allows you to travel inland via motorcoach and railway exploring Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska, Talkeetna, Girdwood (Alyeska) and Denali National Park, taking in the views of the highest mountain peak in North America. Cruisetours include the finest hotel accommodations, a local dedicated Alaskan/Canadian Tour Director, luxury transportation, and some activities.

Snack your way through the bounty of British Columbia in a food-filled public market, and meet local artists in their studios. It’s easy to get around artsy Gastown, lush Stanley Park and downtown’s museums — so pencil in plenty of time for wandering the city on any of Carnival’s cruises from Vancouver.

A Guide to The Best Cruise From Vancouver to Alaska

by Contractor | Nov 12, 2020 | resources , Travel Tips | 0 comments

Alaska has a rugged beauty with breathtaking natural views, and if you are looking to sail into the most northern state, you may be wondering what the best cruise from Vancouver to Alaska is. Almost every major cruise line has a presence in the state, so deciding which one is right for you can depend on a few factors.

The best Alaskan cruise will depend on what kind of experience you want. There are cruise lines that are small and intimate, while some advertise luxury and opulence. Overall though, the highest-rated cruise from multiple sources is the Regent Seven Seas.

Since Alaska has become such a popular cruise destination, you can expect to see many options when it comes time to purchase a ticket.  To better help guide your choice, figure out what you are looking for in a cruise experience; this will help you determine what type of cruise you should take.

What are The Best Cruise Options from Vancouver to Alaska?

best cruise lines from vancouver bc

With all the choices there are for cruises, you will, of course, be curious as to which one is best. Cruises offer much more to guests than just a ship; they offer a full experience, including dining, leisure activities, and outdoor excursions. They also cater to different clientele.

Some focus on a couple’s experience while some are more family-friendly, and some can even provide a more authentic Alaska adventure with loads of hiking and camping. Explore what the ship has to offer onboard and the itinerary of the trip to better plan your journey up north.

With that being said, below is a list of a few top-rated options.

Regent Seven Seas Mariner

This cruise line is undoubtedly one of the more luxurious ships traveling through the Inside Passage. Debuting in 2001, this modern cruise line holds about 700 passengers and boasts a crew to passenger ratio of 1:1. This means that customer service is unparalleled aboard the vessel.

The cruise ship is also home to some extravagant amenities. This line is known for its all-suite and all-balcony rooms and is frequently ranked high for their luxury accommodations.

The ship also offers guests excellent food options with seven distinct dining areas to choose from. Most notably, you will find chefs from the world-famous Le Cordon Bleu Academy of French cuisine.

The ship offers guests catered experiences like cooking demonstrations and has a host of relaxing areas to choose from during the day. At night be regaled by the fantastic shows in the theater or have fun in one of the ship’s casino rooms.

All this luxury does come with a price tag; fares start at around $6,500.

Celebrity Solstice

A bit less intimate than the Regent ship, the Celebrity Solstice has a passenger load of around 2,850. What it offers guests is an experience catered to couples. But that certainly doesn’t mean it lacks the fun of other ships; in combination with the excellent restaurants and a spa, there are indoor pools and water slides too.

Also, most staterooms have verandas, which, if you are sailing the picturesque scenery of Alaska, are almost necessary. The ship has even gone under a recent renovation, so expect some spruced up interior design and more amenities for guests.

Fares for a tip on the Solstice start at around $3,300.

Disney Wonder

When it comes to family fun, a Disney Cruise really can’t be beaten. The worldwide entertainment company took to the seas in 1996 and has been setting the bar ever since. The 2,713 passenger liner offers guests a whole range of entertainment options and amenities.

The ship offers ten family areas, six clubs catered to kids, and seven areas only for adults. The Disney Wonder has six unique dining areas for guests and even an adults-only restaurant.

As you would expect from Disney, the staterooms are designed with families in mind. You will also be plunged into the world of wonder with a schedule packed with character meet and greets and even an extravagant live show based on Frozen.

Fares for the Disney adventure start at around $3,500.

What are The Types of Cruises You Can Find in The Area?

best cruise lines from vancouver bc

With all options, you may be curious if there is a type of cruise better suited for you.

Here are a few types of cruises that are offered in the area:

  • Mainstream – These are the big names that are staples in the Alaskan cruise game. Norwegian, Celebrity, and Holland America offer the classic cruise experience in the Alaskan waterways.
  • Small Ship – If you are looking for more action and time ashore, then a small ship experience is right up your alley. These ships are smaller and offer less in terms of amenities but provide excellent on-shore activities.
  • Luxury – If style is the name of the game, you can’t go wrong with a luxury cruise experience. The Regent Seven Seas and Viking lines are best for this type of cruise.

What are The Best Itineraries?

When it comes to cruising in Alaska, you are going to see two main itineraries. Both are going to offer some excellent views and exciting ports of call. Whichever one you intend to choose, you can rest assured you will get to see a lot of the beauty the state has to offer.

The Inside Passage

This trip is by and large the most popular route. The inside passage is an ice-carved track that hugs Canada’s west coast and offers guests access to several iconic ports of call. This famous passage is home to some stellar natural sights.

The trip can offer more than just views and be an excellent experience for outdoor and sports enthusiasts. Relax ship side as you breeze through some famous natural wonders like the Johnstone Strait and Misty Fjords National Monument.

One thing that is great about the inside passage is that you are in relatively calm water. If sea-sickness is a worry, this trip may be right for you.

The Gulf Passage

This trip allows you to explore some of the great offerings of the Inside Passage, like their ports of call, while including an open sea excursion where the views are impeccable. This scenic cruising portion of the trip will take you to see some of the most iconic natural wonders Alaska has to offer. These are the Glacier National Park or the Hubbard Glacier.

This trip is almost always a one-way trip, and most of the offerings for this itinerary are around seven days.

If you intend to travel in the late summer, keep in mind that the Gulf of Alaska can have some rough seas. This just means if you are particularly prone to seasickness, maybe the inside passage is more your style.

What are The Best Ports of Call to Check Out?

best cruise lines from vancouver bc

Alaska isn’t just about scenic sights and outdoor wonders; the great state also has some great ports of call to check out:

  • Skagway – If plunging yourself in Alaska’s rich gold rush history is your cup of tea, Skagway is a must-visit.
  • Juneau – Alaska’s capital, this city is only accessible from the sea and is a great place to enjoy some of the area’s great outdoor activities.
  • Sitka – This working town has more to offer tourists than just the sights. Enjoy a glimpse into Alaska’s rich Russian heritage here.

These are just a few must-sees in the area. Chances are that they are already on your itinerary.

Alaska can offer some great cruise options for any type of guest. If you are looking for a relaxing luxury experience or are more attuned to outdoor fun and natural wonder, you are sure to find a cruise experience that is right for you.

As one who has reviewed cruise ships and myriad itineraries since 1990, the question I’m most often asked is: What is the best cruise?

Well, that depends on your lifestyle preferences, available time, budget, and where you wish to go. My choice of 2024’s best – or most desirable – cruise ships afloat are: Atlas World Voyager, Crystal’s Symphony and Serenity, Cunard’s Queen Anne arriving in May, Explora Journeys Explora I with Explora II arriving soon, Oceania Vista and sister Allura launching soon, Regent Seven Seas Grandeur, Seabourn’s Venture and Pursuit, and Silversea’s Silver Nova and Silver Ray launching soon.

As global horizons brim with exciting destinations, the newest itineraries beckon intrepid cruisers to view rarely-seen vistas and wildlife, experience awesome adventures, or immerse themselves in local culture. Here are ten itineraries sure to spark bragging rights.

1. Viking’s Paris & Heart of Normandy

This 8-day Seine River cruise loops from Paris to Rouen in Normandy, giving guests a glorious sense of the historic river that influenced French art, culture, cuisine, and history. Viking’s longships dock and overnight in the heart of the City of Light, in view of the Eiffel Tower, where elation bubbles over Olympic ceremonies.

Plan your next getaway with Travel Time, featuring travel deals, destinations and gear.

Viking’s included excursions give an excellent view of Paris’ essential sites, plus a visit to Napoleon’s Chateau Malmaison. Stops along the Seine include medieval villages and dreamy Giverny for the house and gardens where Impressionist artist Claude Monet painted his cycle of water lilies. From the Gothic city of Rouen, guests visit the Normandy Beaches – marking the 80th Anniversary of D-Day on June 6, 2024 – as well as Allies’ cemeteries, museums and historic sites. Optional excursions include visits to ancient Honfleur and Versailles Palace.

2. Cunard’s British Isles Festival Voyage

Cunard celebrates the new Queen Anne – the world’s most anticipated cruise ship, arriving in May 2024 – with a 14-night British Isles Festival Voyage that circumnavigates the British Isles from Southampton, England with calls at Ireland and Scotland.

Every port offers chances to experience active adventure and historic culture. From Belfast, the Giant’s Causeway and Titanic Trail. From Cobh, Blarney Castle and Cork sites. Sites include Isle of Sky, Orkney Isles and Glasgow’s best. Edinburgh options include Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace and Royal Yacht Britannia. Along the way: golf heaven at St. Andrews, and plenty of Whiskey distilleries for Single Malt aficionados.

3. Silversea’s Antarctica Bridge

Silversea’s expedition cruises offer two ways to reach the White Continent. Fly the “ Antarctica bridge ” from Punta Arenas, Chile over Drake Passage to King George Island, Antarctica, to embark on Silver Endeavour.

Or cruise from Puerto Williams , Chile – the world’s southernmost populated town – across Drake Passage on a course that includes Falkland Islands and South Georgia en route to Antarctica. As Antarctica itineraries are guided by weather and ice conditions, trust the captain to navigate through ice and icebergs to calm bays and isles where you can safely kayak or take Zodiac rides to accessible landings.

Cruising Antarctica, you’re destined to be awestruck by the pristine beauty, thriving wildlife including whales, seals, and various penguin species. And if you brave a polar dip in frigid waters, you earn a lifetime of bragging rights.

4. Seabourn’s Beyond The North Cape

Seabourn high Arctic expedition including Svalbard Seabourn Venture’s 12-Day Svalbard – Beyond The North Cape takes guests on the ultimate Arctic adventure, starting north of the Arctic Circle in Tromso, Norway and ending in Edinburgh, Scotland. Norway’s coast and islands are rich in birdlife, wildlife, and dotted with fishing villages and places sacred to Norwegian heritage.

Thrills abound on kayak and Zodiac jaunts among icebergs and through scenic fiords, and exhilarating hikes over tundra landscapes thriving with small plants and flowers. The remote Svalbard archipelago is a unique haven for polar bears, as well as seals, walrus and humpback whales. If conditions allow at Longyearbyen, guests may join an optional submarine dive.

5. Regent Seven Seas’ Epicurean Spotlight

Seven Seas Grandeur’s 10-day Epicurean Spotlight voyage from Athens to Barcelona focuses on tantalizing gastronomies of countries fringing the Mediterranean Sea, with opportunities to meet celebrated chefs, dine in Michelin-starred restaurants, visited famed wineries, learn culinary secrets, and visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

From Piraeus, Greece (port for Athens) Seven Seas Grandeur calls at Bozcaada and Istanbul, Turkey; Taormina, Sicily; Sorrento for Capri, Italy; Civitavecchia to access Rome, Italy; Cannes and Marseille, France, before disembarkation in Barcelona.

6. Oceania Cruises’ Kiwi & Aussie Majesty

Oceania Regatta’s 15-day itinerary from Auckland, New Zealand to Sydney, Australia mingles active escapades through stunning nature and wildlife with indulgent culinary and wine experiences, while introducing guests to vibrant local cultures, both Aboriginal and modern.

This excellent itinerary offers excursions to New Zealand’s best sites within a time frame impossible by a land tour. From Auckland, it runs to Rotorua, Napier, Picton, Christchurch, Dunedin, Bluff and cruising Milford Sound fiords before crossing the Tasman Sea to Australia for calls at Melbourne and Tasmania en route to Sydney.

7. Crystal Symphony’s Land of the Rising Sun

Crystal Symphony’s 11-day itinerary  from Hong Kong to Yokohama, port city for Tokyo, takes guests on an immersive journey through the history and delights of Asian culture, both ancient and modern.

Starting in Hong Kong, the voyage continues to Keelung, Taiwan en route to a comprehensive tour of Japan. Notable ports of call include tropical Miyako-Jima, Naha Okinawa, Kagoshima, Kochi, and Kobe, prior to overnighting in Yokohama for excursions to Tokyo.

8. Explora Journey’s Cinematic Shores and the Panama Canal

Explora 1’s leisurely, 19-day itinerary from Los Angeles to Miami, called Journey from Cinematic Shores and the Panama Canal An Extended Journey takes guests on a superbly luxurious voyage to San Diego; Mexico’s Cabo San Lucas, Mazatland and Puerto Vallarta en route to Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala.

From there, guests visit Puntarena, Costa Rica before crossing the iconic Panama Canal. After stopping in Panama City, the cruise continues to Cartagena and Santa Marta Columbia before arriving in Miami.

9. Holland America Line’s Yukon + Denali

As Alaska celebrates its 65th anniversary of statehood, many lines offer special cruises. Holland America Line’s 14-day Yukon + Denali cruise on ms Kongingsdam offers the most exciting combo of sea and land experiences, with chances to view the Northern Lights. From Anchorage, guests overnight in Alaska’s Denali National Park before visiting Fairbanks.

After flying to Dawson City, Yukon for another overnight, they continue to Whitehorse, northern Canada’s largest city, then on to Skagway to embark on the Alaska route to see Glacier Bay and Ketchikan. The cruise continues through the Inside Passage to Vancouver, British Columbia.

10. Icon of the Seas’ Caribbean Adventure

The world’s biggest ship, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas is a destination unto itself. Loaded with spectacular options for thrill-seekers and families with kids, Icon is conducive to intergenerational bonding, as grandparents can easily retreat to secluded, adult-only pools and lounges.

The Miami-based Icon sails year-round, seven-day Caribbean itineraries Eastern routes include Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, and Basseterre, St. Kitts & Nevis. Western routes include Puerto Costa Maya, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras, and Cozumel Mexico. Each itinerary includes a day at the line’s private island called Special Day at Coco Cay, where kid-free types can hide away at an adult-only pool and beach.

Holland America Line Set to Debut New ‘Glacier Day’ and Enhanced Alaska-Focused Experiences on Every Alaska Cruise in 2024

Culinary highlights include Alaska dishes by Fresh Fish Ambassador Chef Morimoto and new Alaska-themed cocktails by acclaimed bartender Sam Ross

Seattle, Wash., April, 17, 2024 — Holland America Line is debuting “Glacier Day” on its Alaska cruises as it rolls out new programming within its "We Love Alaska” on board experience. The new offerings include Alaska Up Close presentations as well as culinary and beverage experiences to help foster a deeper connection to the people, history and culture of the state. The 2024 season kicks off April 27 from Vancouver and May 4 from Seattle.

“Holland America Line continues to focus on bringing regional and local experiences on board every cruise, with our Alaska sailings leading the way in authentic programming, localized cuisine, and now special events like ‘Glacier Day’,” said Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer of Holland America Line. “We continue to cultivate like-minded partnerships and fine-tune everything from cocktails to wildlife maps to ensure our guests are completely immersed in all facets of Alaska.”

Alaska Season Itineraries and Cruisetours

Through September 2024, guests can embark on Holland America Line’s Alaska cruises and Cruisetours from Vancouver and Seattle aboard Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Westerdam and Zaandam. In addition to seven-day itineraries, guests can take longer 14-day cruises and a new 28-day Arctic Circle Solstice Legendary Voyage that includes 12 Alaska ports.

Cruisetours range from nine to 18 days and include a one-, two- or three-day visit to Denali National Park. Select Cruisetours also include a journey into the wilds of Canada’s Yukon. Holland America Line remains the only cruise line that offers overland tours to the Yukon combined with an Alaska cruise and Denali experience.

‘Glacier Day’ Puts a Spotlight on Alaska’s Majestic Glaciers

As a leader in Alaska cruising, Holland America Line offers more glacier experiences than any other cruise line. The new Glacier Day includes sighting times, scenic commentary, presentations, informational viewing stations, photo opportunities, Dutch Pea Soup on deck, Glacier Ice cocktails, insightful talks by Glacier Bay National Park Rangers and Huna cultural interpreters, an open bow for viewing, and more.

Every Alaska cruise includes a visit to one or more of Alaska’s iconic glacier destinations: Glacier Bay National Park , Hubbard Glacier , Dawes Glacier , and the Twin Sawyer Glaciers of Tracy Arm . Shore excursions also offer the opportunity to visit additional glaciers, including Mendenhall and Portage glaciers.

Serving Fresh Fish in Alaska

Holland America continues to build on its groundbreaking Global Fresh Fish program, which includes being the only cruise line with Alaska seafood certified sustainable by the Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) and bringing locally sourced fresh fish from port to plate in less than 48 hours. In addition to the seafood and other local delicacies served on the menus, ships in Alaska will serve three exclusive dishes created by the brand’s Fresh Fish Ambassador Chef Morimoto: Fresh Black Cod Yuzu, Morimoto Epice Lobster and Fresh Halibut XO.

A new Alaska Seafood Boil will be offered once per cruise in Lido Market for a surcharge. The foodie feast will serve Ivar’s Northwest-Style Clam Chowder, Dungeness Cruise Clusters, Alaska Salmon, Penn Cove Clams, Penn Cove Mussels and a Shrimp Bucket, with Triple Berry Crisp and vanilla ice cream for dessert.

Offered once per cruise, all dishes on the Alaska Brunch menu in the Dining Room were created with the influence of fresh, local Alaskan and Pacific Northwest ingredients. The selections range from sweet to savory and include Alaskan Blueberry Pancakes, Salmon & Potato Chowder, Wild Forest Mushroom and Tarragon Crepes, Kodiak Steak and Egg Skillet, Crab and Hot Smoked Salmon Cakes, Biscuits with Gravy and Alaskan Reindeer Sausage, and Home Smoked Gulf of Alaska Cod Benny.

Bartender Sam Ross Creates Alaska Cocktails

Acclaimed bartender Sam Ross created a menu of exclusive cocktails that will be featured in the bars on all Alaska ships: Juneau AK, Klondiker, PNW Penicillin, Mosquito, Midnight Sun and Frontier Champagne Flip. Ross was the 2011 “U.S. Bartender of the Year” and his flagship bar, Attaboy, won the 2022 award for “Best Bar in the U.S.” by The World’s 50 Best Bars. Ross is credited with creating two of the most famous modern classic cocktails: Penicillin and Paper Plane.

New Exclusive ‘Killer Whale Pale Ale’ Available On Board

Holland America Line is debuting a new “Killer Whale Pale Ale” on all Alaska cruises. The beer was produced in collaboration with Pike Brewing – Seattle’s oldest craft brewery – and features notes of honey, citrus and tropical fruits. The label artwork was created in collaboration with Native Artist Rico Worl , a member of the Tlingit and Athabascan community, who also designed the Native artwork featured on the Alaska menus. The Killer Whale Pale Ale label represents the food chain in the Pacific Northwest, with a seal deftly maneuvering out of the grasp of a killer whale.

More Wildlife Viewing than Any Other Cruise Line

Alaska is synonymous with stunning wilderness, and Holland America Line offers more ways to see wildlife in its natural habitat. Alaska ships carry an expert on board to help guests witness the majestic animals found in the region, and a Wildlife Spotting Guide points out the native animals found along the cruise route and includes a map with the best places to see each species. Ashore, Holland America Line offers nearly 180 shore excursions to see species of all kinds.

On Deck for a Cause Continues to Support Alaska’s Parks

Holland America Line will continue to donate proceeds from its “On Deck for a Cause” charitable event aboard ships in the region to Alaska Geographic , the nonprofit education partner of Alaska’s parks, forests, refuges and conservation lands. Called “On Deck for a Cause: Alaska’s Parks,” guests on all Alaska cruises will be invited to donate $25 to participate in a noncompetitive 5K fundraising walk aboard every sailing. Funds raised through “On Deck for a Cause: Alaska’s Parks” will go to support education, science and research in Alaska’s parks. The 2023 Alaska season raised more than $100,000 for Alaska Geographic.

Standby Program Offers Reduced Rates for Seattle and Vancouver Cruises

Guests with easy access to Seattle or Vancouver have an opportunity to cruise to Alaska at a reduced rate of $49 per person, per day with Holland America Line’s Standby program. Travelers who sign up for a cruise are alerted between seven and two days before departure if they will be sailing. Solo cruisers also only pay $49 per day and do not incur a single supplement for a double stateroom.

Iran’s Attacks Bring Long Shadow War With Israel Into the Open

The volley of drones and missiles was the first time that Tehran directly attacked Israel from its own territory, one expert said.

A building reduced to rubble in Damascus, Syria.

By Cassandra Vinograd

  • April 14, 2024

For decades, Israel and Iran have fought a shadow war across the Middle East , trading attacks by land, sea, air and in cyberspace. The barrage of drones and missiles Iran launched at Israel on Saturday — though nearly all were shot down or intercepted — represented a watershed in the conflict.

It was the first time that Iran directly attacked Israel from its own territory, according to Ahron Bregman, a political scientist and expert in Middle East security issues at King’s College in London, who called it a “historic event.”

Iran has largely used foreign proxies such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah militia to strike Israeli interests, while targeted assassinations of Iranian military leaders and nuclear scientists have been a key part of Israel’s strategy. Here is a recent history of the conflict:

August 2019: An Israeli airstrike killed two Iranian-trained militants in Syria, a drone set off a blast near a Hezbollah office in Lebanon and an airstrike in Qaim, Iraq, killed a commander of an Iran-backed Iraqi militia. Israel accused Iran at the time of trying to establish an overland arms-supply line through Iraq and northern Syria to Lebanon, and analysts said the strikes were aimed at stopping Iran and signaling to its proxies that Israel would not tolerate a fleet of smart missiles on its borders.

January 2020: Israel greeted with satisfaction the assassination of Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani , the commander of the foreign-facing arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, in an American drone strike in Baghdad.

Iran hit back by attacking two bases in Iraq that housed American troops with a barrage of missiles, wounding about 100 U.S. military personnel .

2021-22: In July 2021, an oil tanker managed by an Israeli-owned shipping company was attacked off the coast of Oman, killing two crew members, according to the company and three Israeli officials. Two of the officials said that the attack appeared to have been carried out by Iranian drones.

Iran did not explicitly claim or deny responsibility, but a state-owned television channel described the episode as a response to an Israeli strike in Syria.

In November 2021, Israel killed Iran’s top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh , and followed up with the assassination of a Revolutionary Guards commander, Col. Sayad Khodayee , in May 2022.

December 2023: After Israel’s bombardment of Gaza began in response to the Oct. 7 Hamas-led assault, Iranian-backed militias stepped up their own attacks . And late last year, Iran accused Israel of killing a high-level military figure, Brig. Gen. Sayyed Razi Mousavi , in a missile strike in Syria.

A senior adviser to the Revolutionary Guards, General Mousavi was described as having been a close associate of General Suleimani and was said to have helped oversee the shipment of arms to Hezbollah. Israel, adopting its customary stance, declined to comment directly on whether it was behind General Mousavi’s death.

January 2024: An explosion in a suburb of Beirut, Lebanon, killed Saleh al-Arouri , a Hamas leader, along with two commanders from that group’s armed wing, the first assassination of a top Hamas official outside the West Bank and Gaza in recent years. Officials from Hamas, Lebanon and the United States ascribed the blast to Israel , which did not publicly confirm involvement.

Hezbollah, which receives major support from Iran, stepped up its assaults on Israel after Mr. al-Arouri’s death. Israel’s military hit back at Hezbollah in Lebanon, killing several of the group’s commanders .

March and April: An Israeli drone strike hit a car in southern Lebanon, killing at least one person. Israel’s military said it had killed the deputy commander of Hezbollah’s rocket and missile unit. Hezbollah acknowledged the death of a man, Ali Abdulhassan Naim, but did not provide further details.

The same day, airstrikes killed soldiers near Aleppo, northern Syria, in what appeared to be one of the heaviest Israeli attacks in the country in years. The strikes killed 36 Syrian soldiers, seven Hezbollah fighters and a Syrian from a pro-Iran militia, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based group that tracks Syria’s civil war.

Israel’s military did not claim responsibility. But the country’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, wrote on social media, “We will pursue Hezbollah every place it operates and we will expand the pressure and the pace of the attacks.”

Three days later, strikes on an Iranian Embassy building in Damascus killed three top Iranian commanders and four officers, an attack Iran blamed on Israel.
