UPDATED THAILAND TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has announced that Thailand continues to welcome all international tourists in 2024 with no restrictions.

Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health, said “International travelers arriving in Thailand are not required to show proof of vaccination.”

In addition, foreign tourists are not required to show ATK or RT-PCR COVID-19 test results.

Thailand does highly recommends COVID insurance for visitors from all countries when visiting Thailand.

After months of strict travel restrictions because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Thailand is restored to normalcy by easing all travel restrictions and quarantine requirements to allow tourists to enter the country.

Travel to Thailand

Travelers may enter Thailand with or without vaccination. Vaccination is not required.

No phone app for reporting or tracking is required.

No need to show proof of any vaccination or insurance coverage.

Entry and Exit Requirements

Each country or territory determines its own entry and exit requirements at its borders. If you fail to meet these requirements for your destination, your embassy will not be able to assist you. The following information is provided by Thai authorities and is subject to change without notice.

The entry prerequisites differ based on the passport type you are holding for travel.

Prior to your journey, consult with your travel carrier regarding passport stipulations, as their validity rules might be stricter than those mandated by the destination country.

Ensure that your passport has at least six months of validity remaining upon your arrival in Thailand.

Other Entry Requirements

Immigration officers at the Thai border may request to see a ticket for your return or onward journey, as well as evidence of adequate funds to sustain you throughout your visit. Failure to present these documents may result in denial of entry.

Entry Stamp

Obtain your entry stamp directly from an immigration officer when entering Thailand. Avoid acquiring your visa, visa extension, or entry stamp through visa shops or travel agents within the country.

Passports that have been modified or carry fake visas and entry/exit stamps will be considered invalid. Individuals caught with such passports may face imprisonment, fines, and deportation, and might also be barred from future entry into Thailand.

Do You Need a Visa to Enter Thailand?

Visitors from countries under the Visa Exemption List are not required to obtain a Thai visa in order to travel to Thailand for tourism purposes. The Thai Immigration Bureau will allow foreigners to stay in Thailand for 30 days. Tourists will be able to apply for a 30-day visa extension at any local immigration office in Thailand.

Thailand Pass is no longer in effect

As of July 1, 2022, Thailand Pass is no longer required for foreign travelers entering Thailand.

Vaccinated travelers do not need to provide proof of vaccination before arriving. Unvaccinated travelers are also under no restrictions and can freely travel to Thailand.

If you recovered at covid, you need to get certificate of recovery . You still need to get a 72 hours negative RT PCR if you are unvaccinated, that is the requirements for unvaccinated traveler.

Koh Samui Sandbox: Rules of Samui Plus Program

Thai government reopens Thailand without quarantine for travelers. According to Koh Samui Sandbox , also called Samui Plus plan, Koh Samui, and nearby islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao in Surat Thani province reopened for travelers who have been vaccinated against COVID-19, following the Phuket Sandbox Plan.

What is Samui Plus / Samui Sandbox?

Koh Samui Sandbox (sometimes called Samui Plus Program ), similar to “ Phuket Sandbox ” plan, is a new model to allow foreign travelers who are fully vaccinated to enter Thailand without quarantine. Koh Samui , together with Koh Phangan , and Koh Tao , is set the be a specified route or tourist point to travel. The program started on 15 July 2021 and was revised since 1 October 2021. The vaccinated tourists need to stay no less than 7 5 nights on the islands if they want to travel elsewhere in the country.

Koh Samui Sandbox Rules

When travelling via Koh Samui Sandbox , you must comply with a number of conditions. On the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, travelers will be more restricted in movement. The rules are as following.

Day 0 (Day of arrival)

Tourists download "Samui Health Pass" and "Mor Chana" applications upon arriving at the Airport.

The first Covid-19 RT-PCR test will be performed at Samui Airport or at a location determined by Koh Samui Command Center.

Upon arriving at Samui Airport, tourists proceed to stay at SHA Extra Plus accommodation in Koh Samui only.

Tourists will be transferred from the airport to the pre-booked SHA Extra Plus certified hotel.

Tourists must remain in the hotel room while awaiting the negative result of the first RT-PCR test.

After getting a negative result of the first COVID-19 test, tourists are allowed to leave the hotel room and can travel freely in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao while staying at SHA Extra Plus hotels during the time.

Travelers need to undergo the second COVID-19 test (ATK self-test) on Day 4 or 5

If the result of the second COVID-19 test is negative, tourists can go anywhere in Thailand .

Who can use Samui Sandbox?

✔️ Vaccinated travelers aged 18 and over need to be fully vaccinated for more than 14 days before departure date and able to provide a vaccination certificate

✔️ Children aged under 18 years old , traveling with parents or guardians

Eligible Countries for Samui Sandbox

Starting from 1 October 2021, Samui Plus Sandbox program can be used by vaccinated travelers from any country in the world.

Documents Required for Samui Sandbox

International travelers need to apply for Thailand Pass , just like everyone else traveling to Thailand during COVID-19 pandemic. Proper type of Thai visa or eligibility to use Thailand visa exemption will also be needed.

For entering Thailand and using Samui Plus / Koh Samui Sandbox, travelers will need to show COVID-19 vaccine certificate with a vaccine that has been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) or the Thai Authority. Proof of vaccination must be submitted when applying for Thailand Pass.

The requirement to have a health insurance policy with coverage including COVID-19 related treatment in the amount no less than 20,000 USD for the total duration of your planned stay in Thailand should also stay in place as it's currently mandatory for everyone entering the country. You can easily buy online the special insurance policy such as AXA Sawasdee Thailand to meet all these requirements

Get COVID-19 Insurance

You will also need to present a prepaid booking of Samui Sandbox hotels for 5 nights in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao, inclusive of airport pick up and paid reservation for 1 RT PCR COVID-19 test on Day 0 and 1 ATK.

At least the first night must be booked at SHA Extra Plus hotel on Koh Samui and include airport pickup and at least the first RT-PCR COVID-19 test that will be conducted at Samui International Airport. After that you may move twice to other SHA Extra Plus hotels during the 5 nights of Samui Sandbox stay (up to 3 hotels in total) but all hotels must be pre-booked in advance and booking confirmations need to be uploaded when applying for Thailand Pass.

Air ticket for a direct international flight to Koh Samui or international flight via Bangkok that must be connected with approved sealed flights (PG5125 or PG5171) on one ticket. Separate booking of domestic flight from Bangkok to Samui will not be accepted!

To enter Koh Samui by using Samui Plus model, tourists will have to present a vaccination certificate, as well as undergo a COVID-19 test at the airport.

Samui Sandbox Hotels

Despite the fact that there is no quarantine requirement, arriving tourists under Samui Sandbox scheme are restricted to stay for 5 nights at approved accommodations that received SHA++ (SHA Extra Plus) certification , which is issued by Thai government for safety and health measures standards. .

After receiving the negative result of the first test, you will be allowed to travel freely around Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao but you will have to stay at accommodations with SHA++ certificate. You may move two times to other SHA Extra Plus hotels during the 5 nights of Samui Sandbox stay (can book up to 3 different hotels). All hotels must be pre-booked in advance and booking confirmations need to be uploaded when applying for Thailand Pass.

After the arrival to Koh Samui, 5 nights must be spent at the chosen Samui Sandbox Hotels before traveling elsewhere in the country.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has provided the initial information on the the Samui Plus (Surat Thani) for Samui-Phangan-Tao Sealed Routes model to safely reopen Koh Samui to fully vaccinated international travellers from 15 July as follows,

Reopening guidelines for Surat Thani (Ko Samui, Ko Phangan and Ko Tao):

Pre-arrival.

Foreign travellers must travel from countries/regions with a low to medium risk of SAR-CoV-2 virus as announced and constantly updated by the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH). They must also have already stayed in the said countries/regions no less than 21 days before the travel date
Thai nationals and foreign expatriates must travel from countries/regions with a low to medium risk of SAR-CoV-2 virus as announced and constantly updated by the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH)
They must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with a vaccine registered with the MoPH or approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO) no less than 14 days before the travel date, and must have a vaccine certificate to verify their vaccination
Children under 6 years of age are allowed when travelling with fully vaccinated parents or guardians
Travellers who have a history of COVID-19 infection must also be fully vaccinated no less than 14 days before the travel date
Travellers must have a medical certificate with an RT-PCR laboratory result indicating that COVID-19 is not detected issued no more than 72 hours before departure
Travellers must have a COVID-19 health insurance policy with a minimum coverage of 100,000 USD
Undergo Immigration and Customs procedures, and a COVID-19 screening, including RT-PCR tests;
Download and install the alert application;
Arrivals to Phuket must check-in at the pre-booked SHA Plus-certified accommodation establishment;
Arrivals to Ko Samui must check-in at alternative local quarantine (ALQ) facilities;
If tested negative for COVID-19, travellers to Phuket can go anywhere in Phuket. Travellers to Ko Samui can leave their room for facilities and services within their accommodation only.
During the 1 st - 3 rd nights, travellers can leave their room for facilities and services within their accommodation only.
During the 4 th - 7 th nights, travellers can travel on specified routes within Koh Samui only.
During the 8 th - 14 th nights, travellers can travel between Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.
Undergo a COVID-19 test using an RT-PCR method per the MoPH’s guidelines

Domestic Departure

For travelling from Samui-Phangan-Tao to other Thai destinations, travellers are required to show proof that they have completed a 14-night stay along with the other required documents per the guidelines and measures announced by the respective province of destination.

According to the regulation regarding COVID-19 preventive measure when entering Thailand from April 2021, the mandatory quarantine period was reduced from 14 days to 7 days for vaccinated travelers and 10 days for all non-vaccinated visitors from countries with no mutated strain of SAR-CoV-2 virus. Those arriving in Phuket have to stay at ALQ quarantine hotel at their own expense.

The second stage is scheduled to be implemented from July to September with a start from the island of Phuket where foreign tourists with the vaccine will not be quarantined.

The third stage is planned to take place from October to December, where Krabi , Phang Nga, Koh Samui , Pattaya and Chiang Mai will join Phuket and will started accepting vaccinated tourists without quarantine.

Full reopening of the country is expected to take place in January 2022.

Phuket sandbox approved.

The Phuket Sandbox roadmap has been approved by the Center for Economic Situation Administration (CESA). Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand said that the meeting agreed on the roadmap for accepting vaccinated foreign tourists who must have a negative COVID-19 test to be able to travel to Phuket without quarantine, known as Phuket Sandbox. In the third quarter of 2021, Phuket area is planned to be opened for tourists without quarantine.

Upon success of this plan, in the fourth quarter of 2021 it would be implemented in other popular tourist destinations such as Chonburi (Pattaya), Chiang Mai, Krabi, Phang Nga and Surat Thani (Koh Samui) . However, tourists must comply with the measures against COVID-19 as well as have a completed vaccination with the required number of doses and be tested for COVID-19.

TAT Koh Samui Office Information as of 30 June 2021 Questions and Answers Pilot area opening for travellers in Surat Thani Province (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao) Q1. What are qualifications and requirements if travellers from abroad would like to travel to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao from 15th July 2021? Answer - Coming from the countries approved by the Ministry of Health and the countries/areas proposed by the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Travellers must be in those countries for at least 21 days before travel, except Thai residents who have travelled abroad and have avoided any high-risk areas/communities/places for at least 14 days before travel. - Having been vaccinated with a certified vaccine by the FDA or WHO at least 14 days before travel, having followed the criteria of the vaccine producers, and carrying a certificate of vaccination. (Those under 18 and not yet receiving any vaccination can travel with parents or guardians who have been fully vaccinated.) - Having a medical certificate with laboratory results indicating that COVID-19 was not detected using RT-PCR within 72 hours before travel. - Having a health insurance which covers Covid – 19 and has a minimum coverage of USD 100,000. - Having a proof of payment for 14-day accommodation which also shows the 14 dates of the stay (7 days at an ALQ in Koh samui and 7 days in a SHA+ hotel in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, or Koh Tao) and having a proof of RT-PCR test payment. Those who stay less than 14 days must have international flight tickets with the departure date and proofs of payment for accommodation and RT – PCR test. - Only direct international flights to Koh Samui or domestic transit flights from Bangkok – Samui are allowed. Travellers are not allowed to travel to Samui on normal domestic flights unless it has been approved for connection with other pilot areas inside Thailand. - Travellers who want to stay less than 14 days must depart Thailand. And when leaving Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao, travellers must be separated from others, except for the group travelling into Thailand together. - Accepting the rules and conditions of the 14-day period. - All documents provided to officers at Samui International airport must be in English only. 1 TAT Koh Samui Office Information as of 30 June 2021 Q2. What are the measures of the 14-Day Period in Surat Thani Province? Answer: Requirements for the 14-day period are only applicable to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao. Details are as follows. 2.1 Details of the 14-day period 1st – 7th night, must stay in an ALQ accommodation in Koh Samui only. 8th – 14th night, must stay in a SHA+ hotel in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, or Koh Tao 1st – 3rd night: After the first RT PCR test in Koh Samui reports negative, travellers can use the area and services within the hotel only. 4th – 7th night: Travellers can travel in the sealed route program within Koh Samui only. 8th – 14th night: Travellers can only travel in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao. Travellers cannot leave the islands to other areas or provinces. Travellers are not allowed to rent a car/motorbike or travel on their own. Travellers must use a tour operator that has correct permissions. In case of travelling between the islands, public ferries are not allowed. They must use a specific ferry with correct permissions and use the designated ports only. After 15 days, travellers can travel freely. 2. 2 Three RT-PCR tests during the stay (Arrival day, Day 6-7, and Day 12-13) 2.3 Following the measures D-M-H-T-T-A. Distancing, Mask Wearing, Hand washing, Temperature checking, Testing if you suspect any symptoms of covid -19, and downloading Applications as required by the government 2 TAT Koh Samui Office Information as of 30 June 2021 Q3. If all criteria are met, what is the procedure? Answer 3.1 Book a flight, accommodation and get the Covid -19 test as specified in the requirements. • For Bangkok-Samui flights for international travel, please check at www.bangkokair.com. • ALQ accommodation can be found at http://www.hsscovid.com/. Select hotels that have been assessed, select Surat Thani province, and select the specific list for Koh Samui. • SHA+ accommodation can be found at https://www.thailandsha.com. Select SHA+ information. For accommodation information, travellers can, in the first instance, contact permitted hotels directly. Tour package details will be announced later. Follow our updates at www.tatnews.org Q4. What must travellers do if they wish to travel less than 14 days? Answer 4.1 RT-PCR Covid Test on arrival. A. In case of visiting Thailand for less than 7 days, a second test shall be conducted between Day 6-7 of the stay, or according to the Ministry of Public Health’s requirements. B. In case of travelling to Thailand for a period of 10-14 days, a second test shall be conducted between Day 6-7, and a third test between day 12 -13 of the stay, or according to the Ministry of Public Health’s requirements. 4.2 Departure from Thailand A. Travellers must be separated from others, except for the group travelling into Thailand together. Q5. In case of staying for more than 14 days, can travellers travel outside Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao area? Answer: Travellers are able to travel outside the area of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao, and to other provinces in Thailand by showing evidence confirming your stay of at least 14 days and the results of the Covid tests, meeting the specified requirements, and complying with the guidelines specified by Surat Thani Province and the destination province. 3 TAT Koh Samui Office Information as of 30 June 2021 Q6. What makes travellers already arriving in the area not allowed to participate in the Samui+ Model? Answer 6.1 Travellers are not allowed to get into the area if incomplete documentation related to immigration is detected. While waiting for the journey back, travellers must enter the quarantine process in the ALQ system for 14 days or until being able to depart Thailand, and shall not participate in the Samui+ Model. The airline or the traveller, as the case may be, is responsible for the expenses. For other cases, it shall be at the discretion of the infectious disease control officer at the international port of entry. 6.2 In case of illness or a positive Covid test result, travellers must go through the treatment process. Companions must enter the disease control process, subject to the discretion of public health officials and physicians. Q7. During the pilot area opening from July 15, 2021, can people and domestic tourists travel in and out of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao area? Answer: The pilot opening of Samui+ Model is designed to consider safety along with the economy. Domestic travellers can still travel in and out by following the measures set by the home province and Surat Thani province. Currently there are restrictions for travelling into the area of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao from dark red, red, and orange zones. These include: 1. Having a RT-PCR test result not exceeding 72 hours (from the date of examination) *A medical certificate or a test result issued by a hospital, or an agency certified by the Ministry of Public Health must be provided. 2. Receiving 2 doses of vaccine, or completing doses according to the criteria of the vaccine producers not less than seven days prior to travelling, or receiving the 1st dose of AstraZeneca not less than 21 days prior to travelling. *An approved certificate issued by the hospital or designated agency must be provided; or 3. In case of prior Covid-19 infection, travellers must have recovered for at least 14 days and not more than 90 days. *A medical certificate or approved certificate issued by a nurse or a certified agency by the Ministry of Public Health must be provided. 9 Things You Need to Know About Samui Plus Reopening

Starting July 15, 2021, Koh Samui becomes the second Thai tourist destination to welcome international travelers. Rules and restrictions are similar to those imposed on its bigger sibling, Phuket which serves as a pilot for reintroducing tourism back to the Land of Smiles, also known as “Phuket Sandbox”.

But before jumping on a plane, there are a number of strings attached – both before and during your trip. So gone are the days of just showing up to your favorite beach resort with a backpack, but w e’re going to break it down to help you simplify things.

Here are the Top 9 things you need to know before taking that long-awaited beach getaway to the idyllic island paradises of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.

1. You Must Be Vaccinated:

Only fully vaccinated travelers with a vaccine approved in Thailand or by the World Health Organization (WHO) can enter. The vaccine must be administered at least 14 days after its final dose prior to arrival. Please refer to the WHO website for a list of vaccine candidates and their respective statuses.

2. Your country must be on the list:

Below is listed of countries that are designed low to medium risk as of June 29, 2021. It’s important to note this list can change at anytime without notice. Be sure to check with the Thailand authorities before booking your tickets!

3. You must first apply for a Certificate of Entry (COE)

Prior to the pandemic, travelers from most countries can enter Thailand visa-free with just a passport. However, as a way to control who comes in, when, and that all requirements are met, it is now necessary for all travelers outside Thailand to obtain a Certificate of Entry (COE). 4. You must have Travel Insurance with Medical Coverage of at least $100,000

International travelers must have insurance covering treatment and medical expenses including those related to COVID-19 with a minimum coverage of US$100,000. The insurance must cover the total duration of stay in Thailand. Please contact your travel insurance carrier for rates and coverage details. Popular Trip Insurance providers include Allianz and Travelex , among others.

5. Your place of stay must be prepaid, and at a Government-Approved Hotel

The days of “winging it” in Thailand are over. Your accommodations in Samui must be prepaid at a SHA-Plus property. ‘SHA’ is a certification for businesses that meet the basic standards of hygiene and health safety for their products and services in accordance with the nationwide measures to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). ‘SHA Plus’ is a certification for companies/individuals which have received the SHA certificate and where 70% of the workforce has been vaccinated. During this initial reopening phase, staying at a private residence is NOT permitted. So be sure to confirm with your hotel is a SHA-Plus approved before making your non-refundable reservation!

6. PCR Tests are required before departure, on arrival and during your stay. And your movement will be tracked.

All visitors must obtain a medical certificate with a negative PCR laboratory result issued no more than 72 hours before departure.
At time of arrival at the airport, a PCR test (at passenger’s expense) will be administered. Guests must remain on the hotel premises until a negative test result is returned.
Additional PCR tests will be administered on Day 6 (or 7) and Day 12 (or 13) by the Ministry of Public Health.
If you test positive for COVID-19, you will be transferred immediately to a designated hospital. Travelers are responsible for all medical / transportation expenses. Hopefully, this is covered your travel insurance.
On top of the PCR tests before and during your stay, you’re also required to activate two tracking apps throughout your stay to ensure you follow the travel parameters under the Samui Plus Reopening rules.

7. You must stay in Samui for 7 consecutive days before traveling to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao; and 14 days between the 3 sister islands before traveling elsewhere in Thailand.

Vaccinated travelers are required to stay in Samui / Koh Phangan / Koh Tao for 14 days before being allowed to move about the country. Here’s a summary of Samui Plus’ stay requirements:

Day 0-1: upon arrival at the hotel, travelers must remain in their hotel room until they are notified of negative RT-PCR test results (within 24 hours)
Days 1-3: After receiving a negative PCR test result, travelers can leave their room and enjoy facilities and services within their resort.
Days 4-7, travelers can travel on designated routes and on excursions /tours within Ko Samui only.
Days 8-14, travelers can travel between Ko Samui, Ko Phangan and Ko Tao.

Passengers must stay the first 7-nights at a SHA-Plus Hotel before moving to another hotel in Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. After staying a total of 14 nights within the 3 islands, travelers may proceed elsewhere (most destinations) in Thailand without restriction (subject to change of course). Please be sure to keep your PCR test results, proof of stay in Samui, and your vaccine certificate.

For those who do not plan on visiting elsewhere in Thailand, there is no minimum stay requirements for Samui (i.e. you do not need to stay 14 days). However, passengers must show an outbound international airline ticket for their departure that coincides with their hotel reservation in Samui.

8. COVID Rules still very much apply in Thailand

Once you’re cleared to leave your room, COVID is still taken very seriously in Thailand. This means:

Masks are required indoors and outdoors;
Temperature checks will be done routinely by various venues
The use of SHA-Plus restaurants, tour companies and taxis are strongly recommended
There remains venue capacity limits and/or restricted opening hours; Curfews can be imposed on short notice as dictated by local conditions.
As mentioned above, a tracking apps must be installed and active on your mobile device to verify your movements are in line with the COVID-19 rules.

9. So What’s Next?

As the first major Asian country to open its doors to international tourists, all eyes are on Phuket and Samui now. If all goes well, Thailand plans to expand these sandboxes to other popular tourist destinations such as Krabi, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Pattaya and possibly Bangkok in the coming months. Other Southeast Asian countries are keeping a close eye on these “sandboxes” in hopes of their reopening. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed!

Travel to Koh Samui without quarantine

After a long lockdown by covid-19, it is again possible to travel to Thailand without a long-term quarantine.

This is subject to strict requirements by the thai government. The Thai government uses the "Wash-Avoid-Reduce" campaign and one is obliged to adhere to it.

Local rules may vary and we recommend getting information from official bodies or the local situation. The Thai government has also opened the hotline 1422 for additional questions.

Weather & When to Go to Koh Samui

Samui has three seasons; "cool", "hot", and "monsoon", but the seasons are not as distinct as in many western countries, in fact sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference. The best time to visit is between November and April when you will find that the conditions are optimal for enjoying the beaches and engaging in water-sports or boating activities, with a good amount of sun and minimal rain.

If you don’t like it too hot, try and visit during the cool season which is from November to February, when the average temperatures during the day will be around 25°C. Or, if you love the heat, come between March and May to experience temperatures of 30°C and above, but take care during the middle of the day as the heat can be oppressive. Between June and October comes the monsoon season, which features torrential downpours on an almost daily basis, but it will still be warm with temperatures around 26°C to 28°C. So, in reality, you can visit Samui any time of the year and have a great time, just make sure your schedule is flexible if you come during the rainy season, and take extra care on the roads.

How To Get To Koh Samui

Koh Samui does have it’s own (very tiny) airport, with regular flights to and from Bangkok, plus a handful of other destinations. Unfortunately, Bangkok Airways has a monopoly on the airport so the ticket prices are very steep for such a short journey, with one-way tickets starting at 3000 baht ($100), about four times the price of flights to Phuket.

Plane (direct) – To get from Bangkok to Koh Samui by plane, you will need to get to Suvarnabhumi airport as there are no flights from Don Mueang. You can buy tickets at the airport but expect to pay around 50% more, and the flights are already pricey. Budget for at least 3000 baht ($100) if you can book several days in advance, and 5000 baht ($165) once at the airport. The flight time is a little over an hour. Once you've landed you can take a minibus or taxi to your destination, with taxis charging around 300 baht ($10) to go to Chaweng.

Plane (via Surat Thani) – As mentioned, flights to the island’s airport are expensive, but you can fly to nearby Surat Thani for as little as 850 baht ($28) and then hop over on the ferry for 200-300 baht ($6.60-$10). This will be the most convenient option for many.

Bus and ferry – By far the cheapest option is public bus and then ferry. The public buses depart from Bangkok’s southern bus terminal and take up to 12 hours to get to Surat Thani for around 500 baht ($16.65) or even less. At Surat Thani, you can then buy a combined bus/boat ticket which takes you first to Donsak Pier (takes about an hour) and then a ferry to Koh Samui, which takes around 90 minutes. So your total cost is around 700 baht ($23.35) and takes 12-16 hours depending on layovers. This is great for backpackers, the fact that you can sleep on the overnight bus means you save money on a night in a hotel.

Train – Thai trains are slow and uncomfortable. A second class sleeper bunk to Surat Thani costs around 1100 baht ($36.30) and should take 12 hours, but Thai trains almost always run late. Allow for a 1-3 hour delay. Upon arrival you will have to buy the bus/boat ticket at 200 baht, bringing the cost to around 1300 baht ($43) and taking 17-20 hours in total.

Airport shuttles – These can be booked in advance quite easily online to take you to your hotel with the minimum of fuss. However, many hotels and resorts will have their own service, so check before you arrive.

Transport Recommendation: There are plenty of ways to get to Koh Samui, the most convenient way is to fly direct to Koh Samui Airport, the only downside to this is that it is a little expensive. You can also fly to Surat Thani and get the ferry across, which is much cheaper or you can take the bus, train or taxi and ferry. All methods of transport can be conveniently booked in advanced online. Getting Around Koh Samui

Rent a motorbike – Like the other Thai islands, if you are a confident motorcycle rider and have a valid license, renting a bike can save you a small fortune, plus you can dodge the constant stress of being overcharged. Rentals start at 250 baht ($8.25) a day and petrol is very cheap, but make sure you ask for a helmet and do not leave your passport as a deposit.

Taxi – Taxis will invariably try to not use the meter and overcharge, but savvy travelers can download the NaviGo App which will save you both time and money. Taxi drivers will try and get you to agree a price upfront, which can be as much as 5-10 times what they would charge a local using the meter.

Songtaews – Songtaews offer great value for money if you know where you are going. Just wave one down and jump on, and ring the bell to get off. Trips start at 50 baht – don’t negotiate a price or the driver will give you the private taxi service costing several times more. Remember that as a foreigner, almost everyone will try and charge you more for transport – if the quote sounds like a lot to you then it almost certainly is, don’t be afraid to walk away and ask somewhere else.

Hire a car or jeep – You can also hire a small car for around 1000 baht ($33) per day, but take care when it’s raining as there are many dirt tracks on the island which become treacherous during a downpour.

Where To Stay In Koh Samui

Chaweng is home to the island's largest and most popular beach, which is approximately 7 km long. It is the most developed part of the island, with a dizzying array of accommodations, restaurants and bars on offer, as well as by far the best nightlife options on the island. As such, the area attracts a wide range of different travelers, however, it does not seem popular with Thai holidaymakers and everything is very much aimed at western tourists. Chaweng offers every kind of amenity that you could need, with banks, money exchanges, ATMs, pharmacies, massage and spa studios, tailors, the ubiquitous fast-food restaurants and many more besides. If you are wanting a relaxing, quiet getaway, this is not the place for you.

Lamai is Samui's second-largest destination, and as such is home to a great range of accommodation and attractions, but slightly less bustling and noisy than Chaweng. It is more laid-back and slightly cheaper but still has a great range of restaurants, bars and nightlife, and travelers looking for the superclub-type experience only need to travel to Chaweng, which is about half an hour away. Lamai also has a great beach and plenty of entertainment to choose from, but the nightlife revolves more around girly bars and the beer bar complex than Chaweng. In short, Lamai is a good compromise for many people, but it doesn't have the buzzing nightlife of Chaweng, neither could it be described as quiet and relaxing.

Mae Nam is a much quieter destination. It is noticeably more laid back and relaxing with a village feel, and the beach is more secluded, making this an ideal choice for families or couples looking to get away from the hustle and bustle. Mae Nam does have a handful of restaurants, shops and some bars, but there is no real nightlife to speak of, possibly some live music but don't expect anything past 11 pm. It is also home to some of the cheapest accommodation options on the island, so may be a good choice for backpackers on a budget. It's a great place to relax and unwind, and is only half an hour's drive to the shopping and entertainment mecca of Chaweng, with many places renting cars from as little as 750 baht ($25) per day.

Bophut is the choice for people who want a more authentic experience as it's one of the only places on the island to retain some of the original Thai/Chinese feel, although the area is expanding and developing rapidly to cater for the tourism industry. The area is centred around what is known as the Fisherman's Village, which comprises of narrow streets lined with traditional Chinese-style shophouses, in direct contrast to the neon commercialism of Chaweng. Shopping options are generally limited to small souvenir shops and boutique stores, however, there is a good selection of restaurants and bars in the area, with Bophut having a reputation as one of the best places to eat in Samui.

Choeng Mon is only 15 minutes from Chaweng, but is much, much quieter and consists of several bays with beautiful white sand beaches and inviting waters. There are a few restaurants, notably close to the larger beaches, but in general, there is not much to see and do in the area as it mainly consists of upmarket resorts with people traveling to nearby Chaweng for shopping and entertainment. There are a few local restaurants, a tailor and a massage shop, but by and large, most of the entertainment is offered on-site in the resorts. Choeng Mon, therefore, tends to attract the package holiday visitors, a slightly older crowd predominantly from Europe.

Koh Samui has many temples, with some very grand and important temples being especially interesting for visitors. Of particular note are two very large and impressive local landmarks; the Samui Big Buddha which is a huge golden Buddha on the north-east of the island visible for miles around, and the huge statue of the 18-armed goddess Guanyin. There are also numerous Thai and Chinese-style temples dotted around the island, all of which welcome tourists.

You won’t be able to see all the temples on the island as there are simply too many. A great idea is to plan to see a few temples in the morning before doing something different after lunch, this will prevent you from becoming “templed-out”. All the temples on the island are fully functioning places of worship, and as such you will see the locals attending and praying, so you must show the proper respect by being quiet, removing your shoes, and wearing the correct dress (women especially need to ensure that shoulders and knees are covered).

The island has a comprehensive range of nightlife options, varying from quiet ex-pat bars to the full-on Ibiza-style experience which can be found in Chaweng. Prices, Expenses & Typical Costs In Koh Samui

Accommodation - Accommodation ranges from a bed in a dorm room at 100 baht ($3.33) per night, all the way up to huge villas in 5-star luxury resorts at 50,000 baht ($1665) per night. The best value is probably to be found in the boutique-style guest-houses, from around 900 baht ($30) per night. Most resorts will offer large family rooms or bungalows from around 2000 baht ($66) per night.

Transportation - Short hops of 1-2 km on a motorcycle can be as little as 50 baht ($1.65), with taxis and tuk-tuks charging something in the range of 150-300 baht ($4.95-$9.90) for a similar journey. These charges can add up throughout a 2-week holiday, but a motorbike rental can be as little as 200 baht ($6.60) per day if you shop around.

Food and Drink - The cheapest street food meal will cost from 30 baht ($1), with a green curry and rice costing around 100 baht ($3.33) in a local restaurant. Fast food meals will be 120-240 baht ($4-$8), and at western-style steak/seafood joints, the sky is the limit. Beers start at around 40-80 baht ($1.33-$2.66) in most places, with cocktails costing noticeably more, and foreign wines being very pricey due to steep import tax.

Koh Samui Money Saving Tips

Don't be afraid of the street food, the Thais know that some of the freshest and tastiest food is served on the street and it's the best value as well, with meals starting from as little as 30 baht ($1). These places might look a little unorthodox to you, with the plastic chairs and rickety tables, but they are clean, tasty and cheap, indeed you can have five street food meals for the price of a McDonald's meal.

Never, ever buy Thai baht in your home country. You don't need to, and you can lose 15% or even more of your spending money instantly. In Thailand the rates are amazingly good; dollars, pounds and euros (as well as many other currencies) are accepted at all the exchange kiosks, which are dotted around the island (there are seemingly hundreds of them, and are very easy to find). Beware, however, that any damaged or defaced bills will be refused.

In touristy areas, many bars and restaurants will offer promotions, usually at specific times of the day. With savings of up to 50% on offer, it pays to keep an eye out for these deals, and besides, you may well encounter people handing out money-off vouchers at various locations such as shopping malls or markets. Laundry charges at resorts and hotels can be excessive, as much as 100 baht ($3.33) per item. If you go out into the street, you will very likely be able to get your whole load done for that price. You can often buy a new pair of shorts for less than what the hotel charge for laundering your old ones!

Is It Safe to Travel Around Koh Samui?

Koh Samui, like most Thai destinations, is very safe. By far the biggest dangers are the roads and traffic, followed by attempts at scams and petty theft, which can be avoided with a little common sense. You will be at a greater risk of crime late at night, particularly if you have been drinking, so be aware of your surroundings and keep your wits about you if you’re enjoying the nightlife.

Thailand now has the most dangerous roads in the world as measured by road deaths, and the island roads are worse than the mainland. With this in mind, take utmost care if you decide to drive, especially if riding a motorcycle, and only do so if you are confident in your abilities. Also, take extreme care when crossing the road as law enforcement is very inconsistent and drink driving is rife.

Petty theft can and does occur, so take some basic precautions to stop it from ruining your holiday. Don't bring lots of expensive gadgets and jewellery to Thailand, in most cases it's not needed, and when you go out make sure that you put any valuable items in the safe. When out and about, especially in bars, avoid flashing the contents of your wallet or other overt displays of wealth, Thai people are honest and decent but unfortunately, there are still some bad eggs.

Like practically any tourist destination on the planet, there are several common scams taking place. Thais are generally shy and reserved and not great with English, so when an English-speaking Thai propositions you in the street to go somewhere or do something, politely decline. Even with the worst scams, you are very unlikely to be in any physical danger, if you are being pestered then a firm “no” and walking away will suffice.
