Boat tour in Santorini.

A Private Catamaran Cruise to the hot springs and around the Santorini caldera is one of my favorite things to do in Greece.

Boat Tours of the Caldera – My Advice A boat tour of the caldera is among my very favorite things to do in Santorini . Unforgettable and a must-do! Don’t worry too much about which tour you book – they’re all good. Emphasis should be on getting something booked in advance before they sell out for your dates. Day tour or sunset tour? There is not a huge difference between the two types of tours beyond the time of day. A day tour/cruise usually runs from 9 or 10 am to 3 pm, serves lunch, and has lots of swimming. A sunset tour/cruise runs from about 3 pm to 8 or 9 pm, serves dinner, has a little less swimming than the day tour, and typically finishes by sailing beneath the Oia cliffs to watch the sunset. Private boat tour or small group tour? I’ll be honest, I definitely prefer the private boat tours . You get more input on where to go, how long to spend at different spots, what music to listen to, and (sometimes) where you get dropped off at the end. Yes, private tours are more expensive but I’d be shocked if anyone regretted the money they spent once they’re on the boat. The description says, “all you can eat and drink”, is that really true? Yes, but with some differences between tours. The private tours bring the drinks out before you’ve left the harbor. The less-expensive tours hold-off for a bit until the boat gets to the first destination and you’ve had a swim, which might be an hour to two, but after that, it’s an open bar. There are no ferries to the volcano. The only way to do a volcano tour is to do a boat tour. You can not access the volcano unless you’re part of an organized (private or group) tour. All boat tours have great views of the caldera cliffs. Cruise options include: hike the volcano; swim in the hot springs (you can always stay on the boat if you wish); visit Thirassia and explore its villages; stop at Red Beach and White Beach to swim and snorkel; eat lunch or dinner on board, and watch the sunset below Oia. GetYourGuide.com is the best way to book tours in Santorini. If you ever need to cancel it’s usually much easier if you’ve booked through Get Your Guide.

The 8 Best Boat Tours in Santorini

All boat tours below provide meals onboard and have hotel pick-up and drop-off (which doesn’t sound like a big deal when you’re booking but makes the day so much easier and hassle-free when the time arrives). Also, all tours enter the caldera, sail to or near the volcano, and have plenty of swimming and snorkeling . Food on the tours ranges from surprisingly good to great. And the boats are very generous with their alcohol – after every tour, I ask myself how they make money when they’re so lavish with the food and drink. 1. Small Group Catamaran Cruise Sunset Cruise (2:45pm departure) or Day Cruise (9:45am departure). Awesome cruise around the volcano, staring up at the cliffs of the caldera. You stop at a few beaches for swimming and snorkeling, then swim in the hot springs near the volcano, eat a huge lunch or dinner, and finally see the sunset from the cliffs below Oia (for the sunset cruise). Lots of fun! If this tour is fully booked then try the Caldera Cruise or Santorini Sunset Cruise . 2. Private Catamaran Cruise

Wonderful private cruise of the caldera. Great food and plenty of flexibility on what to see and where to sail. Ideal for a luxury honeymoon cruise, small group, or family. The day tour departs at 10:30am, the sunset-tour departs at 3:30pm. Both tours last 5 hours. Be prepared to be insanely pampered. If the above tour is fully booked – which is common from June to September – then try the Private Sunset Cruise . 3. Santorini Day Cruise Wonderful day tour with great food and friendly staff (10:00am departure). You can’t go more than 5 minutes without someone asking if you want another beer or glass of wine. But it’s far from a drinking cruise – the emphasis is on swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing on the top of the catamaran. You’ll visit a few beaches and the hot springs and have plenty of time to explore the sights of the caldera. (I did this boat tour last summer and it was awesome.) 4. Private Cruise on a Motor Yacht This is an incredible way to see the Santorini cliffs and stare up at the villages perched on the caldera’s edge. The motor yachts allow for much more freedom in getting around the volcanic islands and seeing the caldera from every different angle. On a catamaran, you feel like you’re on vacation. On the motor yachts it feels a little more like you’re on an adventure (though there’s still plenty of swimming, snorkeling, eating, and drinking). 5. Volcano Boat Tour Much less expensive and with a larger boat and group of people but still very fun. This tour is almost the opposite of the Sunset Catamaran Cruise. You get the volcano, hot springs (with swimming), and a visit to Thirassia island – but no beaches or going outside the caldera, and no sunset. This is the cheapest boat tour of the caldera. 6. Santorini Fishing Tour This tour is very well done and lots of fun. Boat around the Santorini waters on a local fishing boat. Fresh seafood lunch or dinner served on board (eat what you catch and empty from the nets). The daytime tour is best for families and serious fishermen. The sunset tour is best for couples. 7. Santorini Jet Ski Tour Not a boat tour, obviously, but super fun. We’ve done a couple of these tours (it’s always a small group of 2 to 4) to the volcano and they rank as some of the most exhilarating activities we’ve ever done. (That’s my son in the photo, 14 years old at the time.) The perspective you get as you ride through the caldera is awe-inspiring. A boat travels with the tour and is there for any emergencies or if the water gets too rough for beginner riders. The South Coast Tour is fun, but to see the volcano and caldera (which I recommend) you need to do the Volcano Tour or Extreme Volcano Tour. I would be shocked if anyone did this tour and at its conclusion didn’t yell, that was awesome!!! 8. Sea Kayaking Excursion A fun and easy-going way to explore the Santorini coastline. The Morning Tour and Evening Tour stick to the south coast of the island. The Round The Lighthouse Tour goes into the caldera and offers incredible views of the caldera cliffs.

About Santorini Dave

Santorini Dave

Hi Dave – great site with so much information!

My partner and I can’t decide which tour to go on in July – we want to do the volcano excursion, see the sunset at Oia onboard but also see the south coastline (mainly the red beach).

Is it best to do a cheaper volcano boat tour on one day and then a catamaran sunset cruise on another (we are visiting for 6 days). Or I saw you’ve posted about water taxis to see the different beaches, so I guess we can do the volcano boat tour and then take the bus (or drive) to Akrotiri and make our way to the beach?

We haven’t decided on whether to rent a car or use the buses. I’ve seen you posted about pros/cons of both types of transport. I think our main consideration is the wait for buses due to peak season vs the cost of renting a car. Or maybe we rent a car for part of our trip.

Thank you so much!

' src=

As much as I love and recommend boat tours, I generally would not recommend doing two different boat trips. I think that time is better spent exploring the island, and yes, taking the water taxi between southern beaches is a good option. I would rent a car for two or three days and use the bus the other days. The boat tours will have hotel pick up, so you need not worry about transportation that day.

' src=

Dave: When you go swimming on these boat trips (especially one going to hot springs), where can you keep your valuables, e.g. your camera? It would be terrible to lose your photos. I am a trustworthy person, but wonder what other people do to avoid any problems. You can’t swim with a camera.

Honestly, it’s never been anything I’ve considered. It’s usually a small group of people and there’s never an issue with leaving your stuff. I suppose you could leave it with one of the staff, but I expect they’d just laugh and say, this is Greece, your stuff is fine, go swim.

' src=

Hi Dave, thanks so much for all your recommendations. How choppy are these boat rides? I am concerned about sea sickness if you have any specific recommendations? Thanks so much!

The boat tours are typically pretty calm. Most time is in the protected caldera waters and if the sea is really rough the tour will be cancelled, in any case. The boat tours are definitely less rough than the worst ferry rides, so if you’re ok on the ferry you’ll be fine on a boat tour.

' src=

Just found this fantastic website – thanks Santorini Dave, have been finding it really useful! One question about the boat tours please, we’d like to do one, will they take 5 year olds? Thank you

Unless otherwise stated, boat tours allow all ages.

' src=

Hi, Dave My friend and I are considering to book the Private Catamaran Cruise. Could you please give us some ideas about the range of the gratuities we should provide? Thanks!

Tipping in the 10% to 20% is appreciated. But the more the better – holiday workers really rely on tips to make a living wage.

' src=

Hi Dave – are there any boat trips available from Santorini that are maybe just 2-3 hours instead of a half or full day? Would like to be able to swim and just see some beautiful scenery, but will have a 4-year-old and husband that might be debatable if he would get sea-sickness so 5 hours feels like a big commitment. We’re staying in Oia – what might you suggest? We’ll only be on Santorini for 2 nights/1.5 days before moving on to Naxos. Thanks for all of your excellent insights!

There are no shorter tours on Santorini. Though if you booked a private boat tour (expensive, obviously) they would return you to port whenever you wanted. I will say the 5 hours goes very quickly. The only other option (as far as getting on a boat) is the ferry to Thirassia or the water taxis along the south coast beaches.

' src=

We are visiting Santorini the first week of November, will the water be too cold for these awesome excursions with swimming in hot springs and volcanoes? And if it is, is it still worth doing?

Yes, it likely will be too cold to swim for most (though not impossible for the bold). And also yes, it’s definitely still worth doing a boat tour even if you don’t swim. Views and perspective from the water are incredible any time of year.

' src=

Hi Santorini Dave

I’m looking to travel next year by myself possibly in May/September, which area of Santorini would you recommend I stay? I’m debating the time I’ll be staying but it will be between 5 or 7 nights.

Also, would you recommend any day trips to another island?

Many thanks, Alison.

I have several posts on this site about where to stay on Santorini and best towns and beaches. Take a look. In general, I do not recommend day trips to other islands. With the ferry schedules, it’s difficult to get more than a few hours on neighboring islands when you do a day trip. It’s much better to pack your bags and move to whatever island you want to see.

' src=

I’m going to Santorini and Mykonos for 8 days. Do you think it’s worth doing a boat tour on each island? I’ll only have 3 days in Mykonos.

Definitely do a boat tour in Santorini. For Mykonos it’s more of a toss-up. (If greek cooking sounds interesting to you, I’d probably do the cooking course instead of a boat tour.)

' src=

Hi Dave, Thanks for all the information on this site. Is there a sailing trip that just goes for a trip around the caldera, with no swimming or snorkeling? Maybe with the option of seeing the volcano close up and also the sunset? Thanks, Tansen.

Pretty much all tours have swimming but you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to. And while others are swimming you can just relax on deck and gaze at the views. The tour carries on even when some are swimming so it’s not as if you just sit there on your own, bored – there’s still plenty of fun on board the boat.

' src=

Do you think boat tours are fine during winter season? Otherwise, do you have any recommendations for winter excursions?

Many thanks in advance.

If by winter, you mean December, January, and February then there will be few (if any) boat tours running and I don’t think I’d recommend them. If, instead, you might be visiting in March and get some good weather then they’ll be fine (though still not many running). A wine tour is a great year-round thing to do in Santorini. And walking the Fira-Oia path.

' src=

For the boat tours, do you need to swim to the beach or is walkable to the shore once they dock as close as they can? We’re not great swimmers and if that’s requirement we’ll have to book another boat tour.

For tours that visit the volcano, the boat will dock and you’ll be able to walk off without getting wet. For tours that visit the hot springs, the boat will anchor about 30 to 50 meters from the hot spring area and you’ll need to swim to the warm water. Otherwise, most tours stop near a beach for swimming and snorkeling but don’t really directly visit the beach. You’re fine staying on the boat and viewing the scenery (which is great) while others swim. On most tours about half the people swim and half remain on the boat, so it’s unlikely you’re the only one left on the boat while everyone else is off playing.

' src=

Will the boat tour to the volcano and hot spring be suitable for those who get sea sick?

Generally, it’s usually pretty calm. Depending on where you depart from most of the tour will be inside the protected caldera. Catamarans are more stable than single-hull boats.

' src=

We are taking our kids to Santorini the last week of March. What private boat tour would you recommend to take for the volcano tour?

It’s not so much what is the best tour but more what is available. As the time grows closer (February or early March) search Getyourguide for Santorini Boat Tours and choose the most appropriate.

' src=

I tried to book the private boat tour and the sunset tour above but both were fully booked for our dates. Do you have another good boat tour that you could recommend? Preferably a private one. Thanks!

There’s another Spiridakos boat tour that is excellent and very similar to the private tour I’ve listed above. It has departures of 10:30 (day tour) and 3:30 (sunset tour).

' src=

Dave, your advice on this site is awesome and very detailed. My fiancee and I are going to be in Santorini in August for our honeymoon and are definitely booking one of the boat tours, but we just can’t decide on whether to do a day or sunset voyage. Anything you can tell us that would help make our decision easier? Not sure if this has an effect on the analysis, but we are staying in Imerovigli which I understand has nice views of the sunset. Thanks!!

There’s not a huge difference: the day tour has more swimming time, the sunset tour has more evening hours. Be sure to take a change of clothes for the sunset tour (it can get chilly at night). The sunset tour has a later starting date which allows you to do something in the morning.

' src=

Hello Dave.

I’ll be staying in santoniri for a day this November. Arrive Friday morning to either Katikies or Kirini hotel, and then leave late Saturday afternoon to Athens. (Though I have to check out from my hotel by 12pm). Would you recommend a boat tour? If yes, which would it be. My issue mainly time and not price.

Both the 5-Hour Caldera Cruise at Sunset (3pm departure) and the 5-Hour Small Group Catamaran Cruise (9:30am and 2:30pm departure) run into late November. Both are great tours.

' src=

I am about to book the semi-private boat tour and we are going the last week of June into July (which, from what I understand, is a very crowded time of year). Do you think that the day of the week that we book the day tour matters much (Friday vs. Saturday vs. Monday)? I assume everyone on board is likely vacationing so I’m not sure if this would be significant, but if it may make a different in terms of the number of people on board, I’d love to know. Thanks!

There’s no difference between days of the week and busyness. Do whatever works best.

' src=

I have 3 full days in Santorini in the beginning of July. I’m looking into a boat tour or sea kayaking. Is it worth it to do both? What would you suggest? Thanks for your amazing resources!!

If you can only do one do the boat tour but if time allows do both, as they each have a very different feel. It’s a more surreal feeling being in a kayak at water-level looking up at the huge cliffs (depending where your tour goes). But you do get to do more when on the boat tour – it’s a more complete introduction to the caldera.

I am looking to book the sunset catamaran trip this summer. In the check out it asks for passport information. I just wanted to check this was a normal request/it’s safe to provide my information to this company?

Yes, it’s safe and secure. The information is requested by the port authority but it’s never used. You could put in your correct name and then just make up a letter/number combination for the passport number. They’ll never know and never look at it.

We are going to Santorini for one day in July via fast ferry from Crete. Are there any shorter cruises around Santorini that we can do in that window of time that we will be there?

No, sorry. There’s no boat tour (that I know of) that would get you back in time to get your return ferry to Crete.

' src=

We will be in Santorini for 3 days after ferries from Athens-Mykonos then Mykonos-Santorini. We were thinking of taking the ferry to Milos for a day trip. Is it reasonable to do in a day or will we be ferried out? Thanks for your insight, love reading all of your suggestions.

Not worth it. If you want to visit Milos stay at least 2 nights and 1 full day.

Hi Dave, I’m planning a honeymoon in Greece this upcoming May and your site has been an amazing resource – thanks! Quick question: Is May too early for the boat tours that have swimming? Thanks.

Yes, they’ll be running in May (usually start in April) and you’ll be able to swim. But water can still be a bit chilly. And note, hot springs are not “hot” just warm.

' src=

Hi there, I love to read and follow all of your posts so thank you for always having the most up to date information! We will be in Santorini in July and I would like to do a catamaran tour of the island and go into caves and see some of the hidden gems of Santorini. Is there a tour or boat that would do that? Also, is there a boat that will take you to Mykonos for a day and back to Santorini? Thank you, Alissa

I don’t know of any boat tours that take in caves. And don’t know of any Santorini to Mykonos tours either. There are much better islands to visit on a day tour from Santorini. Ios for beaches, Naxos for inland sightseeing. (That said, I typically don’t recommend doing a day trip from Santorini as time is much better spent on Santorini than on a boat. If you do want to see another island then stay a night or two to see it best.)

' src=

I am looking for a beach hopping trip in Santorini to visit the Black Beach, Red Beach, White beach etc. tour starts at 4PM or 5PM. How much for 2 people?

For these beaches best to do it yourself with this boat from Akrotiri . It will be 10€ per person round trip. Can also take a different boat back to Kamari (if you were taking the bus, if you’ve got your own car then you’ll need to return to Akrotiri). Last boat is about 6:30pm (but double check) so you won’t have a lot of time.

Hi Dave – Awesome site. Just became a patron!

Trying to select the right boat tour for my husband and I (going in a few weeks!). They all seem great so it’s hard to select. What are the key differences between these three tours:

Semi-Private Luxury Catamaran Day Cruise 5-Hour Small Group Catamaran Cruise Sunset Catamaran Sailing Cruise in Caldera

In particular, trying to understand if it’s worth paying the premium for the semi-private luxury catamaran day cruise.

Many thanks! Lily

The single biggest difference is whether the tour goes through the day or in the late afternoon (and gets the sunset). The 5-hour small group tour is cheaper than the other two but will have a few more people on the boat and the food served is not quite as robust as for the semi-private and sunset catamaran cruises. More appetizers than the full meal you get on the other two. Fewer drinks are served as well. All 3 are great and you’ll love whatever you choose. My advice is to first decide whether you want the sunset or more sun/swimming.

Would like to do a private boat tour of caldera. It’s our honeymoon and want a super special day out on the water with food, wine, swimming, snorkeling, and the hot springs. Maybe take in the sunset too, but as you say, it’s a choice between more swimming/sunshine and sunset/evening so not sure what we’ll decide. What’s the best tour to book for our needs?

Thanks, Colin

The Private Half-Day Catamaran Cruise of Santorini is simply awesome. It is expensive but I’m sure you’re expecting that already. There’s a morning departure (for lots of swimming and sunshine) and an afternoon departure (for the sunset – but still plenty of time to swim too). Food is top notch. If it’s within your budget this is the one you want. (If you do the sunset tour bring a change of clothes so you can change out of your wet swimming stuff and enjoy the sunset without a chill.)

' src=

We are visiting Santorini in the next few weeks. Is there a ferry that 2 people can take on their own and explore the volcano/hot springs, or is it only by tour? Please let me know! Much appreciated. Gabriel M

There are no ferries to the volcano or hot springs. You have to do a tour or a chartered/private tour. There are small boats that do regular routes to the neighboring island of Thirassia (that forms the western side of the caldera) but this isn’t the volcano.

We are looking for the best sunset tour around Santorini. Our only concern is that we also want lots of swimming. If we do the sunset tour will we have enough time to swim?

Thanks Miller

Not sure what you mean by “enough” but you’ll certainly get a good stretch of time to swim. It won’t be 10 minutes and let’s go. More like 2 to 3 hours.

4 Best Santorini Volcano Tours: Witness The Volcanic Majesty Of The Island

AFFILIATE DISCLOSURE

🌋🌊🧭 Are you ready for the best Santorini Volcano tours?

Ah, Santorini- an idyllic volcanic paradise framed by a stunningly beautiful blue sea. One of the most romantic destinations in Europe , this picturesque Greek island offers a plethora of adventurous activities to enjoy, including the volcano tours Santorini is famous for.

What many people don’t know is that this charming island is actually home to a dormant volcano . Towering above the landscape, the volcano of Santorini is both awe-inspiring and humbling. Although it may seem daunting, experiencing the power and beauty of this natural wonder up close is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will stay with you forever.

Sailing around the caldera, swimming in the volcanic hot springs and learning more about the history of Santorini volcano was one of the best activities we did during our trip. And we highly recommend doing the tour to all our readers.

In this post, we share the best Santorini volcano boat tour options available, including the tour we took.

VOLCANO TOUR SANTORINI: HIKE + DINNER + SUNSET

This is the best Santorini volcano tour for travellers that really want to hike to the crater . It includes a dinner with drinks on the board and a sunset stop at Amaudi Bay .

Is It Worth Doing A Volcano Tour In Santorini?

Santorini volcano tours.

For adventure enthusiasts, few things can compare to the experience of exploring a volcano up close. And when it comes to dramatic volcanic landscapes, Santorini takes the prize. While the island itself is a popular destination for tourists, fewer people take the time to venture out to the volcanic crater, which is a shame.

Not only is the hike to the crater an excellent opportunity for exercise , but it’s also a chance to learn about how this stunning island was created. As you hike through the ash and along the rugged terrain, your guide will regale you with stories of volcanic activity and the island’s ancient history.

That, topped with an unusual experience of swimming in the sulphur-rich volcanic hot springs Santorini has to offer, makes for a fantastic day out.

It’s a unique, unforgettable experience that’s absolutely worth it for those looking for an adventure that’s both exhilarating and educational.

Santorini Volcano Tours: At A Glance

santorini volcano tour

Santorini Island was created around 3,500 years ago during a massive volcanic eruption that sank the middle of the island. The eruption was so significant that it had a global effect and wiped out all human existence on the island at that time.

Today, the volcano is dormant, and visitors can explore the area safely. There are several Santorini volcano tours available that take tourists around the caldera to view the stunning landscape from a distance.

On some of these boat tours , you can also get off the boat to hike up to a crater for an even closer look, and all of the tours include a stop at the volcanic hot springs .

Swimming in the hot springs is definitely a unique experience, but don’t expect the water to be overly warm. In fact, the water near the volcanic islands is only a couple of degrees Celcius higher than the rest of the sea, but it has a high content of sulphur, minerals and metals, and bathing in it, is believed to bring health benefits.

What’s the best time to do the tour?

The best time to do the Santorini volcano tours is during the summer months of May to October when the weather is warm, which is better for a pleasant dip in the hot springs, and there is less chance of rain and strong wind. The tours can be done almost year-round, however, with a warm jacket or sweater recommended in colder months.

We did our tour in mid-April, and although we swam in the hot springs, which are colder than you may think 😂, I wouldn’t say it was overly pleasant. It was also a little bit too windy.

Tips For Santorini Volcano Hot Springs Tours

Santorini hot springs.

Here are some of the most important tips to keep in mind before embarking on one of the Santorini volcano tours.

✔️ Wear a dark swimsuit

One thing to keep in mind when planning your trip is to wear a dark swimsuit. The hot springs feature sulphur-rich waters , which can stain light-coloured shorts or a swimsuit .

However, this minor inconvenience is well worth the experience of soaking in the rejuvenating waters while gazing out at the stunning landscape. The water of the hot springs is known for its therapeutic benefits and is an excellent way to relax and unwind after hiking the volcano.

✔️ Bring comfortable shoes

When it comes to exploring the magnificent Santorini volcano, proper footwear is essential. As you navigate the rugged terrain, you’ll encounter loose rocks, steep inclines, and winding pathways that require sturdy shoes with good traction. Be sure to bring a pair of comfortable walking or hiking shoes that offer ample support and cushioning.

✔️ Carry plenty of water

Remember, staying properly hydrated is essential for optimal health and well-being, especially when you’re engaging in physical activity. Hiking through the rugged terrain in the bright Mediterranean sun can take a toll on even the fittest travellers, so make sure you bring enough water. We recommend at least 1.5 litres per person.

✔️ Protect from sun

When planning your volcano trip Santorini has to offer, it’s important to remember to protect yourself from the blazing sun. Don’t forget to pack some sun cream, sunglasses, and a hat to shield your skin and eyes from harmful UV rays. Additionally, we recommended wearing breathable clothing made of cotton or linen for optimal comfort.

Also, I recommend renting a small car to explore the small villages around. My go-to website is always Discover Cars . It compares the local car rentals with a click.

GOOD TO KNOW: We have a detailed guide about the best yoga retreats in Santorini .

The best Volcano boat Tour in Santorini

Overview: Best Volcano Tours by Type

1. Volcanic Islands Cruise with Palea Kameni Hot Springs

A great and the cheapest one on this list is this volcanic island cruise . Starting from only 26€ per person, this is an absolute bargain. Oh and it is popular and great value!

Cruise to the volcanic islands of Santorini’s caldera region. Swim in the hot springs, admire views from an active volcano and explore island villages.

The highlights are:

  • Peer into the crater of an active volcano
  • Swim in volcanic hot springs
  • Explore the the city of Thirassia on your own
  • Experience a spectacular sunset in Oia

Below I created a map for you. Here you see where this tour takes you. You get on the boat at Athinios Port, the main island of Santorini itself.

First stop is at Nea Kameni . There you take the path to the crater of the active volcano. As with every tour you have some time to explore and wander.

Next you head to Palea Kameni , the island left-hand and swim in the hot springs.

The hot springs are not super hot water, if this is what you expect, but more warm water.

After getting dry you will sail to Thirassia to visit Manolas , a village accessible by winding stairs, or by a donkey ride up to the village.

In Thirassia you have the time to get lunch. The crew has some recommendations on restaurants. They are good places to eat. However, if you are a bit in shape, you can walk up the village and eat at Panorama Restaurant. It’s a bit cheaper, and the views are wonderful. (make sure you are back on time!)

The last stop takes you to the North of the main Island, the famous Oia village, for a brief stop.

There is the option of extending the tour in Oia to admire the panoramic views and a spectacular sunset.

Depending on what you chose, the duration of the tour is between 6 and 10 hours. This tour is the cheapest one of all, starting from 26€.

“The trip was fun and the sunset was awesome on the boat. I would definitely do it again. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen and dont forget your nausea medicine if you are a person that gets sea sick.” – Review from a traveler on GetYourGuide

I created a map with all stops and rough itinerary.

Volcanic Islands Cruise with Palea Kameni Hot Springs

2. Sunset Dinner and Volcano Tour

The more classy version including sunset dinner, the Sunset dinner Volcano Tour .

Cruise around Santorini and get some free time at Nea Kameni volcano. Languish in the hot springs, and watch the sun set over the island on a dinner cruise.

  • Climb to the top of the volcano on Nea Kameni Island
  • Swim in the hot springs at Palia Kameni
  • Watch the sunset while being wined and dined on a dinner cruise

The tour actually starts at your foot step. They will pick-up at your hotel, and then drive to Athinios Port to hop on the boat.

Cruise to the island of Nea Kameni and get the chance to climb to the top of the volcano.

Continue to Palia Kameni to dive and swim in the hot springs created by the underwater powers of the volcano.

Sail above the underwater craters to Thirasia Island, and anchor close to the shore to relax over a dinner buffet of pork rolls, chicken rolls, rice and baked potatoes, along with Greek salad, tzatziki, bread and seasonal fruit, all served with local wine.

Set sail as the sun begins to sink into the sea and experience the true romance of Santorini from the water.

The itinerary is pretty much the same as #1 in this list. Yet, this activity includes lunch and is usually less busy.

On top of that, the highlight here is the sunset from the boat.

volcano day trip santorini

3. The Santorini Catamaran Red Cruise with Meal & Drinks

This is the Santorini Catamaran Red Cruise , a romantic and memorable sunset cruise. This cruise is actually from the route like #3 , but it is a different kind of boat. Please refer to the map below.

Climb aboard the 74-foot Ocean Voyager or the 80-foot Tahiti catamaran for a 5-hour sunset cruise around Santorini in the Aegean Sea.

Sailing, snorkeling, snacks, white beaches, good vibes only and a mud bath!!

Read : 33 Fun things to do in Santorini .

Head over to a secluded White Beach, only accessible from the sea, for more swimming and snorkeling in the shadow of the towering white cliffs.

Free snorkeling equipment is available on board the catamaran where you’ll also be served a barbecue supper of salads and grilled pork.

Continue sailing inside the crescent-shaped Caldera, close to the volcano, and enjoy a final dip and mudbath in the Hot Springs.

Now, this is how you spend an epic, unforgettable day!

Sunset Cruise in Santorini

4. Private Romantic Catamaran Cruise

Still want to go more luxury? I hear you.

Charter a private romantic Catamaran Cruise with your very own captain.

This private sunset catamaran cruise departs in the morning or afternoon from Ammoudi and takes you, your friends and/ or family on a private trip inside the caldera of Santorini.

I added their route as well in the map . The route is as well a bit flexible.

Your first stop will be the famous volcanot and continues with a therapeutic swim and a natural spa in the renowned Hot Springs.

Here the sea water is significantly warmer than in Santorini itself. It is mixed with sulfur, offering a unique mud bath to swimmers!

After a few more beautiful spots and dips in the water, you will enjoy the traditional BBQ full of Greek flavors and local wine at a unique White Beach !

My best tip : The tour starts twice per day. I recommend the afternoon tour with the sunset – it is just magical! Thank me later 😉

The captain will be at your disposal to ask for any route within the caldera and make your sea excursion a perfectly personalized experience!

Good to know :

  • Vegetarian options are available. You can let the crew know during booking.
  • It is recommended to bring a swimsuit, sunscreen, a hat, and a light jacket for the sea breeze

Best Private Boat Tour Cruise in Santorini

5. Luxury Small Group Catamaran w/ Meal & Open Bar

And if you want to share a little luxury with your people, then we recommend Luxury Small Group Catamaran . You can sail with a small group in the morning or sunset hours around the Santorini caldera aboard a luxury catamaran with an open bar.

After being picked up from your hotel, unwind as you’re taken straight to the port. Take advantage of the snorkeling opportunity with a half-hour stop off the coast of Red Beach, plus 1.5 hours to snorkel in the sea caves of White Beach. Bathe in the lagoon’s hot springs and snorkel in clear waters.

If you choose the morning option, start your day off with a light breakfast onboard the catamaran. Sip on some coffee, tea, and orange juice, with toast and spreads.

Snorkel, swim in hot springs, and enjoy a freshly prepared Greek meal.

This experience include delicious food, amazing views, and the kindest staff. We would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable experience. You can swim and dive from the catamaran. The food is freshly prepared on board – live cooking on the grill.

If you travel to Santorini, this experience is a must.

All Volcano Tours in Santorini put on a map

A map is always helpful. I created a map with the 4 tours to show you the stops.

I kept the same order form #1 to #4 and kept them in a different color. I hope it is clear enough and helps you choose.

  • BLUE : Volcanic Islands Cruise with Palea Kameni Hot Springs (cheapest!)
  • RED : Sunset dinner Volcano Tour
  • YELLOW : The Santorini Catamaran Red Cruise with Meal & Drinks
  • GREEN : Private Romantic Catamaran Cruise
  • The Luxury Small Group Catamaran tour stops for swimming and snorkeling at the best spots. This can change due to weather and water conditions. Therefore, we did not add it in the map.

Comparing all 5 Tours

Alright, let’s get even more into details. Here is an overview of our handpicked cruises. In this chart we compare prices, duration and what’s special for every tour.

It will help you to take a decision.

This information can vary by season and availability. Please take this into account.

Prices? The costs per person

As you can see in the chart above, the prices start from 39€ up to 425€ per person.

I have seen as well cheaper ones when I was there. But, I do not recommend going for anything cheaper.

Cheaper usually simply means more people will join. For me, the quality dropped significantly.

So while you may save 5€, you will end up with 50% more people on the boat. Unless you are really on a tight budget, do not do this.

How to book?

I always book my tours directly at Get Your Guide .

It makes things easier.

With both websites I receive an instant confirmation email, and the payment can be done online with your credit card. Very simple! The guide will send you an email or call you about the pick-up and meeting point.

Everything is pretty straight forward and simply.

Pick your favorite tour, add your dates, and finalize the booking. Make sure you receive the confirmation email.

And that is it! Congrats, you are about to have a great time!

Especially in summer I recommend to book your tour as early as you can. Tours can be sold out easily, and then you are left with the “ less good ” tours.

Can you book a Santorini Boat Tour for the next day?

Yes! Just visit Get Your Guide and type in your date. Check the availability. When booking, you will receive a booking confirmation with a phone number. The tour operator will get in touch with you. If the tour is sold out, you won’t be able to book it.

Where is the Volcano in Santorini anyways?

Santorini is basically a Volcano itself. Or better to say, what remains from it after an enormous volcanic eruption.

When looking at Santorini you will notice a giant central, rectangular lagoon.

It measures about 12 by 7 km and is surrounded by up to 300 meter tall cliffs.

The active Volcano (yes, you read well, it is active!) had the last eruption on 1950. Nowadays, it only has fumarolic activity.

We talk a bit more about this on our article about things to see in Santorini .

4 Santorini Volcano Tours

What to bring on the tour?

First of all, it depends what tour you choose and what that tour includes. If the tour includes the food like the #2 in this list, that’s covered.

My #1 volcano activity does not include lunch. But, you are nearby restaurants and taverns for getting your Greek food.

Remember, these cruises take at least 5 hours, so it more like a half-day trip.

Yet, I always recommend bringing:

  • cash in EURO (and credit card)
  • swimsuit (do not bring a white bikini due to the mud-bath!)
  • a beautiful and light dress (for wearing on the boat, restaurant and take even more beautiful photos!)
  • linen shirt
  • some cards to play maybe
  • GoPro – worth it!

Some of the tours we mention also cover drinks and meals. Please check this before booking.

Keep always in mind, Santorini is a summer destination, and you have sunshine (almost) all year long. Do not get sunburned on your first day and then suffer through the rest of your holidays.

Please don’t! Do not be that tourist!

Santorini is way too beautiful to do that. Rest assured, you can skip the sunburn experience!

What to pack for Santorini Boat Tour? A Bikini is a great idea; but not a white one!

Santorini Volcano Tour worth it?

In case it did not come across by now: Absolutely, that’s a definite yes!

Again: YES, a volcano tour in Santorini is worth it your time and money!

I consider the Volcano Tours a must-do when you are at least 2 days here.

Even on a day trip to Santorini it would be worth it. Yet, I don’t think there is any tour that is early enough back to get you back to an official ferry schedule.

If you are only visiting Santorini for a day trip, I recommend taking the traditional bus tour including wine tasting, cute villages and sunset in Oia.

You see, the island is a Volcano itself.

Earlier I mentioned, it is actually what is left after an enormous earthquake thousands of years ago. It changed the whole island form and destroyed human life on it.

Read the full wikipedia article on this topic here.

So I would say : It is worth to take the tour.

Simply because Santorini’s history is closely related to it, no, because it is a Volcano.

Here is some reviews:

“Very well-organized cruise that delivers what they promise, with a fun vibe. Great for all ages and the boat never felt too full, even with about 30 passengers on board. We stopped three times to swim, and one included snorkeling. Dinner was tasty and plenty of good, drinks on tap apart from beer, which was charged for. Highly recommend it.”

– Louise, Japan

“If you want to get into the water, layout in the sun and visit several beaches, this is the tour for you. We had an incredible time. Our guides were so much fun, the food that was BBQ’d was delicious and the group we toured with were great! Drinks (beer and wine) are included in the price, which is also a HUGE plus. We got to swim with the fishes, take a dip in the hot springs and see the red and white beaches. The catamaran itself was about 3 days old so it was a very nice/clean looking. This was a day we will never forget. We cannot be any happier with this tour!”

Where to stay in Santorini Greece

You can choose from anything really:

Boutique & Luxury Hotels

  • Family Hotels
  • Cheap and EPIC hostels (you will be surprised!!)

For this, we yet again created a map for you. In the map below you find our recommended hostels and things to do on the Islands.

There is many Luxury Hotels to choose from. I especially like Aenaon Villas . It is located on a cliff with amazing views over the sea and area. A very calm area, quite secluded. You will need a rental car or quad to go around. They do offer as well airport transfer.

Other amazing 5 Star Hotels in Santorini:

  • Santorini Princess Spa Hotel
  • Kivotos Santorini

Boutique & Luxury Hotels: Aenaon Villas in Santorini

Family-Friendly Hotels

My best recommendation for families with 1 or 2 kids is the Astra Suites . It has a beautiful pool , suitable for kids, sunset views (for the romantic part of the vacation), and many facilities of luxury.

Some of the rooms also come with fully-equipped kitchen; this is obviously very helpful and a must-have to families.

Another high-end family-friendly hotel in Santorini is the Katikies Garden Santorini – The Leading Hotels Of The World . It offers several different room options for 2 adults and 1 child.

That being said, the cheapest options for families traveling to Santorini will be found on Airbnb. An apartment might be more suitable for you and your loved ones.

Family-Friendly Hotels and Airbnbs in Santorini

Hostels – Cheap AND Cool!

Do you think Hostels are ugly? Uhhhhhh…NOT in Santorini! Have a look at the photos below. During my stay, we also checked out the best hostels in Santorini .

  • Caveland – 5 Star Hostel with pool
  • Bedspot Santorini – best for couples
  • Fira Backpackers Place – best for backpacker

If you are a female solo traveler or traveling with a friend, I urge you to check out Caveland and Bedspot Santorini. Just have a look, really. It is worth it.

How do I get to the Santorini volcano?

You will need a boat to get there and come back. You cannot swim! The absolute best way is a day trip to the Volcano. Tours depart from the port of Athinios and from Gialos, the old port of Fira. Please refer to the map .

What are the best Volcano Cruise Tours in Santorini?

The five best tours are:

  • Volcanic Islands Cruise with Palea Kameni Hot Springs (cheapest!)
  • Sunset dinner Volcano Tour
  • The Santorini Catamaran Red Cruise with Meal & Drinks
  • Private Romantic Catamaran Cruise

See the complete comparison in price, what is included and itinerary here .

Where is Volcano in Santorini?

Most commonly said, the Santorini Volcano would be the central one. However, visible above water is the circular Santorini island group. It consist of Santorini (the main island), Therasia and Aspronisi at the periphery, and the Kameni islands at the center. The Kameni Island would be the one most people refer to as Volcano.

Is Santorini volcano dangerous?

At present, the volcano of Santorini is still dormant, or “ sleeping “. This means that it is indeed still active, but an explosion is not believed to be imminent. Please note that there is always a minimal risk when visiting a Volcano.

4 Best Santorini Volcano Tours

Update: Unfortunately the two tours below “E xclusive Catamaran Tour ” and “ Luxury Catamaran Cruise ” no longer exist. We have removed and replaced them to keep this article up to date for you.

3. Exclusive Catamaran Tour

This list would not be complete without a Catamaran tour. This tour does not take you to the Volcano BUT the Caldera – important.

This is my #1 recommendation if you prefer a semi-private tour with less than 25 people. It is a bit more expensive, but 100% worth it! It’s a different option and I think it’s important to you to see what other options you have.

The tour includes:

  • Sail in the Caldera during morning or evening to see a spectacular sunset
  • Swim and snorkel near the Red and White Beach
  • Enjoy a barbecue meal of local delicacies with drinks
  • Visit the Hot Springs
  • Discover unique parts of Santorini not reachable by car

Yes you read well, a barbecue is included, as well as drinks (white wine, beer, soft drinks, water).

They do also bring snorkeling equipment. You only have to be willing to jump in the water!

And the groups are small. A really nice way to meet other fellow travelers and enjoy Santorini and its hidden beach spots.

I could not find this tour on Airbnb Experiences. There is more private tours, although we enjoyed this one!

Exclusive Catamaran Tour in Santorini

4. Luxury Catamaran Cruise

The newest cruise I add is the Luxury Catamaran Cruise .

(Personally I did not do this so far. It was added by a close friend of mine visiting Santorini beginning of May)

This is the most complete volcano tour out there! A bit more upscale than the others mentioned.

You start in the North, near Oia, cruise around the Volcano and the Hot Spring all the way to the lighthouse and exclusives beaches in the South.

For me, it includes all the best parts of all the tours mentioned above.

It includes a delicious Greek meal, local beer and wine, cocktails, and is overall a more intimate experience. The group is kept very small, only up to 10 people can join.

The staff makes this cruise extra special too! The pickup at your hotel/ hostel/ apartment goes smooth, and they even offer vegetarian meal options, besides the typical Greek dishes of BBQ fish, shrimps and chicken.

Below I include a photo of the meal….yummy!

✏️ Read our Editorial Guidelines

Thank you so much for all the useful info and tips.. I have a quick question, since we will have our camera and cash/credit card etc, does the tour has a locker or some way to keep our belongings safe while we go swimming? Please advise, thx a lot

Thanks a lot for that really great question!

Long story short : Your valuables are safe AND bring a dry bag!

The crew stays on board while you go for a swim and snorkel. So your valuables are actually always safe. However, most of the tours do not have a dry bag for you to put your things. That is important since you don’t want to get water on your camera, phone and wallet (at least when I did the tour, they did not have a dry bag).

I always travel with my own dry bag, and I bring it when I do a boat tour (did a few on Mediterranean, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam). You can also use the dry bag for the dirty clothes, since you can properly close it and the smell does not go out.

You can find cheap and quality dry bags at Amazon here .

Hope that helps, Bluie. Let me know if you have any more questions. I will update the guide now actually, that was a great question!

Safe travels and enjoy Santorini, Matt

Boat Tours in Santorini

Volcano tours, full-day caldera cruise: volcano, hot springs, therasia & sunset in oia.

volcano day trip santorini

Sail across Santorini’s beautiful Caldera and visit the islands of Nea Kammeni and Therasia on this 6-hour cruise. Board a sightseeing boat at the old port and admire Santorini’s cliffs as you cruise to Nea Kammeni. Enjoy free time to walk around its volcanic crater, swim in the warm springs and visit Therasia island. Explore and have lunch there at leisure before cruising back to Santorini. Then explore Oia village and experience a unique sunset !

The excursion starts from the main port of Santorini, Athinios. The bus will pick you up from the nearest pick up point close to your location. Next, you will head to Athinios port where one of our guides will guide you in one of our boats. The tour starts at 09:45 in the morning.

Our first destination will be the famous volcano of Santorini ! After sailing for 20 minutes, we will reach Nea Kammeni’s jetty. Should you be interested to be guided at the volcano, you have to pay 5 euro per person as an entrance fee. Then, you will walk to the volcano’s ridge with your guide who is going to explain to you everything about the history and the geology of the volcano. You will stay at the volcanic island for 1.5 hour and after that you will embark again for the next stop.

Hot Springs

Our next stop will be the island of Palaia Kammeni, where the famous hot springs are located on the west side, a place that is really popular for its thermal waters. We will stop there for 30 minutes, at a distance of 30 meters from the shallow waters of Agios Nicholaos Beach. Take a dive off the boat and feel the warmth of these extraordinary waters. The waters are also full of sulfur, iron, and other metals coming from the volcano and they are very good for the skin, rheumatism, arthritis, and other physical pains. Important Note: In order to reach Agios Nicholaos Beach, it is essential to swim extremely well.

Next stop is the island of Therasia . Therasia is a miniature of what Santorini used to be several years ago. Today it is a virgin island, still untouched by tourism and modern life style. The island of Therasia is only 9 sq. km in size and has approximately 300 permanent inhabitants. We will stay there for 2 hours, so as to explore this picturesque and traditional village as well as to taste the authentic Santorinian cuisine. Should you wish so, you can also walk around the main village of Manolas, which is the capital of Therasia. The view of Santorini is spectacular from there.

Sunset in Oia off board

After Therasia island, you will go back to Athinios port where our bus will take you to Oia, the most beautiful village of Santorini. There you will have the chance to explore unique alleys, discover its rich market as well as enjoy fantastic views and the most breathtaking sunset of your life! After the sunset, you should head for the spot that our buses will be waiting to take you back to your places.

  • Comfortable shoes
  • Gratuities (optional)
  • Volcano entrance fee: 5€ /per person . You can book it separately here
  • A moderate amount of walking is involved
  • Subject to favorable weather conditions. If canceled due to poor weather, you will be given the option of an alternative date or full refund
  • Children of the age group 5 to 12 years old will be charged half ticket

When booking you are never sure if you’re getting value for money but I really felt I did. The day was well organised with a clear pick up point arranged. It was clear what our times were all day and what the plan was. Information was provided in a range of languages and the guide was extremely knowledgeable so I actually felt like I learnt something about the island and wasn’t just a passerby. I found seats on the boat easily and it was exactly as described in the advert. Buses were well organised and driver had your name so I felt idiot proof.

volcano day trip santorini

A great experience. Our guide was awesome. Boat was not too crowded. Excellent day filled with activities. Great value!

for a short stay on santorini and needing to tick a number of the boxes this was perfect. very much packaged into time slots on each part. good info from tour guide on the volcano, not so much after that. hot springs not as exciting as they sound but another fun jump off the side of a boat. Crammed boat, so very much recommend the climb on Therasia to get away from the hordes, some good little restaurants up there too. Bobbing for a little too long in the heat waiting to get back to the port, people starting to really look like they were struggling, and a few dropped out from the all dayer at that point. Mayhem in the port loading people onto buses to Oia, but glad we persisted, and enjoyed smoothies and milkshakes in the picturesque place. Getting to do all that makes this worth doing for the travel alone, take away the number of others squashed onto the same itinerary and the rather bedraggled state you are likely to leave the tour perhaps means this is more about quantity than quality. Backpackers would love it.

A fantastic day out if you are limited for time to tick off the major sites of Santorini , A great experience!

Yes, you will hike up to the crater. The hike is about 90 minutes.

It is not difficult. You will walk a path for 45 minutes to reach the crater and then another 45 minutes to return to the boat.

Yes, it is. But do not forget to bring a hat, sunscreen and comfortable shoes with you.

Yes, you can. There is no extra charge, but you will have to carry it in your arms as the path is not suitable for strollers.

Yes, you can take part but you will not able to swim in the hot springs. Instead, on this part of the tour, you will stay on the boat (relax & sunbathe).

Lifejackets are only for an emergency. The crew will provide you with swimming noodles to help you swim. Lifejackets for swimming are only available in some catamaran cruises . Contact us for more info.

Best Day Trips from Santorini – 2024 Santorini Tours Info

A complete guide to the best day trips from Santorini, packed full of cool ideas and useful information! Includes popular Santorini tours like the sunset cruise and volcano trip, as well as how to get to the Greek islands near Santorini such as Crete and Naxos. If you plan to visit Santorini soon, make sure to read this Santorini day trips guide first!

Looking for things to do in Santorini? These Santorini tours ideas are a great place to start!

Santorini Day Trips

If you are staying for more than 2 days in Santorini , you might be interested in taking one or more of the Santorini day tours on offer. This way, you'll get to see the island from a different perspective, and also a little bit more of Greece.

There's a number of Santorini excursions to choose from, including trips to nearby Greek islands , sailing experiences, volcano treks and more. Let's dive right in on what to do in Santorini for a day tour.

Santorini Volcano Tour

The most popular Santorini day trips by far are the volcano boat tours. There's a number available, some of which do vary in what they offer.

The standard package, so to speak, includes a cruise over to the volcano, some time spent walking on the volcano, time at some hot-springs, and then a cruise back to Santorini. Different variations might include a sunset or private yacht .

I've taken the Santorini volcano and hot springs tour, and found it to be quite enjoyable, mainly for the great views of Santorini you can experience from the boat. I've put an option below for the Santorini volcano cruise.

** 1-Day Volcano Boat Tours: Santorini Volcano, Thirassia & Oia Sunset **

Santorini Sunset Cruise

A Santorini sunset cruise is another popular option for people seeking to witness the beautiful Santorini sunset from a different angle. There are half and full day Santorini boat tours available which time their return with the sunset.

Not only do you get that magical moment as the sun slowly disappears, but you also get to spend time sailing around one of the most beautiful islands in Greece! A sunset tour on a luxury catamaran is surely going to be a unique activity you'll remember for a lifetime!

Take a look below, and decide which Santorini sunset boat tour suits you the most.

** Santorini Gems: Sunset Sailing Cruise on a Catamaran **

Santorini Caldera Cruise

The caldera is a stunning feature of the island's landscape, whether enjoying it during a walk from Fira to Oia , or as seen from the sea.

Taking a Santorini caldera cruise lets you see the island from a variety of different angles. It's also a great idea for anyone keen on taking photos and video.

As with a lot of these Santorini boat trips, you can take one which will also include a sunset. There's a number of different caldera cruises available, which you can see below.

** DreamCatcher Sunset Sailing Cruise in the Caldera **

Santorini Sailing Tours

In addition to the cruises already mentioned, there are countless different options for Santorini sailing trips. Some of them circumnavigate the island, others visit remote beaches, and others still head out to the small islands close to Santorini.

Available as group or private tours , a sailing trip is a great choice for people who want a day of fun and relaxation. I've included a few popular Santorini sailing day trips below.

** Santorini Gems: Morning Sailing Cruise on a Catamaran **

** The Santorini Sunset Catamaran Red Cruise **

Santorini Helicopter Tour

A fun way to see the island from the air is on a Santorini helicopter tour . A 20 or 30 minute helicopter flight over Santorini is a great way to view the island from a different perspective, and get some unique photos and video.

Swoop over the caldera, fly above the villages, and check out the beaches below during the flight. A great way to see experience the beauty of this stunning island! More info below.

Day Trips from Santorini to nearby islands

A look at some of the best Santorini excursions, including volcano boat tours, catamaran caldera cruises, and even Santorini helicopter tours!

To be fair, most people normally take a day trip to Santorini from a nearby island than from it. For example, day trips from Crete to Santorini are a lot more popular than the other way around.

The other issue, is that whilst the rest of the Cyclades islands look close to Santorini, the ferry times are not very convenient.

Day trips to Naxos and Paros for example are not really practical for this very reason. Still, it is possible for good planners to arrange independent day trips from Santorini to Folegandros, Sikinos, Anafi, and Ios.

(If you do want to go to Naxos for a couple of days, here's how to get to get the ferry ).

Anyone willing to take a private day trip to the Greek islands near Santorini would have better luck, especially if they want to charter their own boats and yachts. Here's a few ideas to get you started.

Santorini Tours to Crete

As mentioned, the day trip is most popular in the reverse direction, and the majority of people would choose to spend a lot longer in Crete than just one day.

The only reason I have included the Santorini to Crete day trip information here, is because a lot of people ask about it!

Still, if you are determined to go ahead come what may, then I can suggest one novel way of attempting it. Take a helicopter transfer! Information about the Santorini to Crete helicopter charter below.

** Round-Trip Helicopter Transfer Between Santorini and Greek Islands **

Santorini to Mykonos Day Trip

Mykonos is another well known Greek island, famous for its party life and jet-set crowd. As a day trip though, is it really worth it?

Perhaps only if you wanted to experience the nightlife without sleeping, and then return in the early hours of the morning!

Seriously though, you can just about make a Santorini to Mykonos Day Trip using the local ferries. You would just need to ask at a travel agent when you are in Santorini for the latest ferry times.

You could also charter a helicopter again, or a yacht. Information on these private charters for the Santorini to Mykonos day trip are below. If you are going to do it, do it right!

** Helicopter Transfer between Mykonos & Santorini **

Santorini to Anafi Day Trip

The small, calm, and very un-touristy island of Anafi is arguably the island that it makes the most sense to visit on Santorini excursions.

As most people concentrate on the ‘big name' islands and tick places off their itinerary though, it gets overlooked. This means it has very few tourists, is unspoiled, and has a touch of the wild side to it.

Of course, Anafi has got all those great aspects you might expect such as sandy beaches and clear warm waters as well!

The ferry from Santorini to Anafi takes between 1.5 and 2 hours, and you arrive in the pretty Anafi port of Agios Nikolaos.

Ferries normally leave Santorini early, meaning you get a full day on the island during a day trip from Santorini. Check local travel agents for ferry times and tickets.

Santorini to Ios Day Trip

Ios developed something of a party reputation in the 90's, something which is is still struggling to shake off to this day.

That's a shame really, because the beaches are some of the best in Greece.

Whilst it certainly appeals more to people of a younger generation, it could be a good choice for people looking for something a little different during a day trip from Santorini.

The ferry journey takes less than an hour from Santorini, but can be relatively expensive when compared to other ferry ticket prices.

Once again, ask for schedules and tickets in Santorini travel agents, but perhaps consider staying a night rather than just a day tour from Santorini.

Santorini to Folegandros Day Trip

Folegandros is mostly visited by Greeks who prefer to stay away from the masses of tourists visiting some of the bigger name islands.

Although it is increasing in popularity, it still retains its beauty. The Chora is regarded as one of the most picturesque in Greece.

The island certainly has an undeveloped feel to it, with many beaches only accessible by boat or down rocky paths. It's also a good destination for hiking.

Folegandros is about 3 hours away from Santorini by ferry. In my opinion, there is enough to do there to warrant at least a one night or two night stay.

However, if you are limited on time, it is just about possible to take the Santorini to Folegandros day trip using ferries. Ask at travel agents in Fira for schedules and tickets.

Choosing the best time to visit Santorini depends on many factors, such as weather, tourist numbers and hotel prices.

Santorini Day Tours

These are some of the questions readers commonly ask when planning which day trips from Santorini island they might like to take:

What islands can you visit from Santorini?

You can visit many of the Cyclades islands of Greece from Santorini, but it is only possible to visit a few of them on a day trip from Santorini that allows both enough time for sightseeing and to return.

Can you do a day trip to Santorini from Mykonos?

It is just about possible to go to Santorini and back on a day trip from Mykonos, but you wouldn't have much time to spend on the island. It would be better to plan to stay at least one night on Santorini to make the trip worthwhile.

How many days should you spend in Santorini?

It's possible to enjoy the main experiences and see the essential highlights of Santorini in 2 full days. Stay a little longer if you think that sounds rushed, but be aware that Santorini doesn't have beaches that are that great if you were looking for beach time.

Which Greek island does day trips to Santorini?

You can make day tours to Santorini from Mykonos, Ios, Paros and Naxos. Keep in mind that depending on the ferry schedule, you may not have much time in Santorini for sightseeing, so the day trip might not be worthwhile.

Where can you go on a day trip from Santorini?

Ideas of day trips from Santorini to other islands include:

  • Thirassia Island
  • Palea Kameni
  • Anafi Island

Santorini Island

However you choose to explore Santorini, you'll find it one of the most amazing places on earth. From red and black beaches to the volcanic hot springs, traditional villages to sunset spots, this beautiful island has something for everyone.

Hi Dave! Your blog is so informative and full of great information. I wonder if you could offer a few suggestions for a 3 month summer trip next year, July, August, Sept.? I know summer is the worst time to travel to Greece with the heat and the crowds but it’s the only time we can get away. I’m looking for sleepy , quiet , less crowded islands where we can rent an AirBb for each month that is on the water, and be able to do day trips if we want to. There are so many choices, I don’t know where to begin. Any direction to start would be appreciated. I have spent the last 3 summers in Croatia do think Greece might be a good alternative. Thank you, Jim

August is the real problem month as it’s very busy – book that as soon as you can! I don’t recommend Airbnb as offering much. You would be better off looking for places through Booking. Quiet and sleepy islands in the Cyclades – you could look at Sikinos , Donoussa , and maybe Kimolos .

Hi Dave thanks for this fantastic blog. Im travelling with my husband and 2 kids ages 13 and 16 in July – we will spend some time in Italy then plan on flying from Naples direct to Santorini to avoid having to go through Athens – my daughter is particularly keen on Santorini (i suspect for the insta shots) but many people have told us 6 nights on Santorini is too much – would you agree and if so what would you recommend? In total we are doing 3.5 weeks in italy and greece with only 6-7 nights in greece toward the end of the trip, we dont want to spend it on lengthy ferry trips or to feel like we are rushing around, would just like to see the scenic beaity of Santorini and get in some beach time! Kefalonia looks great but just too inaccessible from Naples and Santorini..I’m also interested in your recomendations for cave accomodation for something a bit different! Thanks in advance, Sue

Hi Sue, 6 nights in Santorini is way too much in my opinion. I’d suggest using 3 nights there max. Some people might then suggest going to Mykonos, but I think in your case, Naxos would be the best choice for another island. The reason is, that Santorini has below average beaches, but Naxos has some great ones. I hope that helps!

Could you recommend a boat company that would take us on a day trip from Mykonos to Patmos? Thank you very much.

Hi Judy, I’m not sure such a tour exists. I know that the ferry takes over three hours, so I’m not sure how viable it would be as a day trip. You can check ferry times here to see if you could put something together yourself – Ferryhopper .

Your blog/website is awesome. Thank so much! I have been to Greece but it was many decades ago. I am planning a mother daughter trip with my 18 yearly daughter in July. We arrive in Athens from NY and we are departing Athens 8 days later. My thought is to fly from Athen to Santorini as soon as we arrive, stay there and then head to another island that is different than Santorini, and then finish up in Athens before flying home. We are so excited for it all but I would say we are looking to focus more on the Greek Island life and just do the must seas in Athens. Any suggestions for the second island and for an itinerary in order make the most of our time in Greece?

Thanks so much in advance!

Hi Lynn, I hope you’re having a great week so far! Your mother / daughter trip sounds awesome, and I really hope you enjoy your time in Santorini and the rest of Greece. In terms of itineraries, the ‘classic’ itinerary is the Athens – Santorni – Mykonos one. Check out my guide here – Greece 7 day itinerary . If you want an (almost overwhelming!!) larger list of itinerary ideas, take a look here – 10 itinerary ideas for Greece . My suggestion for you though, would be to have the island of Milos as your third island. The beaches are really nice, and you can do an inceredibly memorable boat tour around the island, as well as a 4WD tour through the interior and to other areas. My guide to Milos is here – Milos Travel Guide . BTW – Your though to fly directly to Santorini from Athens on arrival is an excellent one! One more thing – Please join our facebook group, as I’m sure the ‘hive mind’ will also love to help with other questions you may have! here’s the group – Real Greek Experiences .

Hi Dave My husband and I are planning a trip in June. We want to go To santorini but are planning on seeing Italy as well so we have to split our time accordingly. We will be in santorini 3 full days. I would like to spend time relaxing near warm clear water. Is santorini the place for this? I keep reading the beaches aren’t great but I’m not sure if that just means not great because they don’t have the typical white sand. Is there a day trip you’d suggest? Thanks! Your info is so helpful!

Hi Ashley, In June the waters will be warm enough to swim. I would say that the beaches aren’t the best when compared to other islands though. My reasons would be to do with the sane, but also the amount of people and general feel of them. I would suggest a sailing day trip that offers plenty of swimming stops perhaps! You might also be interested in a more recent guide I just published – 3 days in Santorini .

My husband and I are celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary in Santorini in July. Where do you suggest a special meal at a restaurant near our hotel in Fira? We have a boat tour planned our first full day. Any suggestions for the next day? We are not beach goers, but don’t want to seeing the beautiful sites Santorini has to offer. Thanks!

Hi Julie, If you are looking for good food, a restaurant in Santorini that is recommended by pretty much everyone, is Metaxi mas in Exo Gonia, a short taxi ride from Fira. It might lack the ambience of restaurants overlooking the caldera, but the food is great. Or you can try Oinomageiremata Nikolas, one of the oldest restaurants in town. For something with more of an ambience, Argo has great reviews, but I haven’t been there myself. I guess you are visiting the volcano on your boat tour? If you are going in the afternoon, bring plenty of sunscreen! For the next day, if you like wine, you could go on one of the wine tours, and you definitely shouldn’t miss the archaeological site of Akrotiri – you can visit both the site and the wineries in the same day. If your hotel has a caldera view, make sure you spend some time on your balcony, watching the sunset. Enjoy your time!

Hi Dave! You have a well thought out and in-depth blog that is realistic, resourceful and help. Congrats! I scoured your blog and have put together a itinerary for travels to Italy and Greece this June. The stops include, Rome, Positiano, Bari, Athens, Santorini and I’d like one more island to visit (Crete, Ikaria, Navagio Beach or Lefkada). I haven’t quite figured out proximity from Bari to Greece or what the first stop from Bari (by ferry assuming) makes more sense. Would you be able to provide detail on which ferry or transportation mode from Italy would work best to Greece and the islands? Thanks!

Hi Rene, Glad you have found the blog useful so far! I’m not sure what ferry company would be the best, but I would suggest getting a ferry to either Igoumenitsa, Patras, or Piraeus (if possible) in Greece. I did hear that Bari-Patras is operated by Anek Superfast – so a place to start looking. The city of Brindisi in Italy also has many options to choose from. You might find that catching a flight into Athens sets you up better and saves some time. Check out the budget airlines such as Ryanair. For your extra island – Ikaria is a very interesting choice and I’d love to hear how you get on there! For beaches, Lefkada has some very nice ones.

Thank you Dave!! I saw pics of Ikaria on Instagram but not much further research on how to get there. Crete seems to be the easier island to visit. I saw day trips from Santorini. I have more research to do and look forward to finalize the trip this week.

Is Santorini Worth It?

Last Updated August 9, 2024 William Tang

You are here: Home » Travel Guides » Is Santorini Worth It?

Oh what a loaded question! Recently a friend asked about my honest opinions about Santorini and it’s one of those things that brings back a lot of emotions and feelings that becomes quite complicated when you break it down.

While I’ve written about our 3 day Santorini itinerary which touches on it, this is something that deserves a bit more attention because I know the turmoil you’re going through right now. Is Santorini worth it and should you include it in your trip? Let me help you walk the line of reason here based on 2 separate trips I’ve made.

In This Article

Highlights of santorini, top tips for travelling to santorini, are the crowds really that bad, why is santorini over-hyped, more reasons why you shouldn’t visit santorini, why you should go to santorini, the fomo is real, how are things post-covid, should you add santorini to your itinerary, to santorini or not, frequently asked questions, read more about greece, travel resources for your next trip.

sunrise view from villa in imerovigli which begs the question is santorini worth it

  • We will tell you if it is worth facing the crowds and visiting Santorini. *spoiler, it is not a direct answer
  • Pretty villages of blue and white nestled into cliffs and mountain sides.
  • Castles, did you know that this tiny island has 5 castles?!
  • Hiking along stunning coastal paths and taking in the views across the Greek islands.
  • Where to stay – We stayed at Prekas Apartments for the stunning views, and being far enough away from the chaos of the main town to be peaceful but not so far that getting places was an issue. We use Booking.com for all of our stays. Alternatively, you can always see if hotel corporate codes might work for you.
  • Car rentals – We do recommend renting a car to truly explore Santorini, at least for part of it. Save the most money through car rental coupon codes and always start your search with Discover Cars and RentalCars so you know what the best deals are.
  • Ferries – In Greece, taking the ferry is the most economical. Use FerryHopper to start your search.
  • Flights – International flights are never cheap, but with the Skyscanner “Everywhere” feature you can find the best deals. Check how much it would be for you to get to Greece!
  • Insurance – Not always required but always recommended! Make sure you’re covered with the best travel insurance .
  • Hottest deals – Never be without our frequently updated travel deals page .

I get it. It almost feels insane to not include the island of Santorini when putting together your Greek island hopping adventure.

It’s plastered on the glam magazines, top lists of this or that, perpetuated by Instagram, and the epitome of the perfection of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea. However, as tourism exploded and over-tourism became a thing, I’m sure you started to hear inklings of negative feedback from people that had been.

volcano day trip santorini

What authority do I have on this topic? Well, I’ve been to Greece on two separate occasions – once as a backpacker, and another time recently with my wife. A good amount of time separated the two trips so it also allowed me to see it from two different perspectives and also the changes that had occurred between 2008 and 2019.

So this is where we circle back to the question “is Santorini worth it?” . I have a bunch of fresh thoughts. At times, I’m going to sound a little schizophrenic but bear with me. I’m going to do my best to show both sides of the story so you can ultimately make your own decision.

This is the number one thing that gets asked.

Yes, it’s pretty bad

yes the crowds in santorini are pretty crazy

You may or may not have seen the photos but behind the beautiful sunsets from Oia lies a not-so-secret truth – the insanity of the crowds. Yes, it’s pretty bad.

Memories fade a little but I am pretty sure I didn’t see the type of crowds I saw on top of the Byzantine Castle Ruins as I saw in 2019. I remember that there was even a group that could uncork a bottle of wine, open a bag of snacks, play the guitar, and sing to the falling sun. Fast forward to 2019 and you had to pick your spot 2.5 hours before sunset and hold that position for the entire duration or else you’d be overrun.

With the surge of cruise tourism and overall popularity, and dare I say, the over-romanticizing of Santorini, you get a shockwave effect where thousands crowd the viewing platforms, winding alleys, rooftops, and whatever inch you can squeeze into, just to watch the sunset.

What’s the culprit for the huge crowds? In talking to the locals, there’s a love-hate relationship with cruise ships. They come in like the wind, unloading 20,000 people daily, and rush out just as quickly as they arrived. Sure, they bring in a lot of money to the island but they don’t put heads in beds, is unsustainable from an environment perspective, and it has really made it hard to enjoy the magic of Santorini.

traditional village of emporio santorini

The flip-side to the above is that as crazy as the Oia sunsets are, I can’t say that it was impossible to enjoy the island.

Walking around Oia and Fira throughout the day is never like you’ll be shoulder-to-shoulder with other tourists. You can shop the boutiques and galleries at ease and at your own pace. The restaurants get busy but if you book ahead of time, you’ll be fine.

Once you leave the cruise hot-spots, you’ll see a dramatic cliff drop (pun intended) of crowds. Walk around the town of Megalochori , Emporio , or Pyrgos and you might encounter a few bus tour groups, but you can easily work around them.

The beaches at Perissa and Red Beach are similarly busy, sure, but you won’t have a problem with finding a spot to lay out your beach towel.

BEFORE YOU CONTINUE

You need to read the companion Greek islands travel guide where I break down everything I learned and invaluable travel tips that’ll make your trip smooth sailing.

my personal views of whether santorini is worth it or not

Connected to that first question is this overall sense of “ is Santorini worth it “?.

You can read the full breakdown but here are my quick thoughts on it.

we had incredible sunsets in paros

Is Santorini the only island with windmills? No.

Is Santorini the only island with epic sunsets? No.

Is Santorini the only island with blue domed churches? No.

My point is that a lot of what we associate to Santorini isn’t unique to the island. Dig a little deeper and just within the Western Cyclades of the Greek Islands and you’ll realize that there are so many other incredible islands such as Paros , Folegandros , and Milos that have many of those elements you are craving for in a Greek island hopping trip.

perfect oia sunset at blue hour in santorini greek islands

I have to admit though, there’s still something unique about Santorini that is just a little (or a lot) different from the other Greek islands.

Is Santorini the only island with the unique geology of being a caldera with volcanic center? Yes.

Is Santorini utterly photogenic from top to bottom? Yes.

Will you still have an amazing time in Santorini? Yes.

This is the part that I have to stress. Sure, you might’ve heard some horror stories from people and if you’re not prepared for the crowds, you might let that sour your experience. That said, by and large, you’re still going to enjoy your time in Santorini no matter how long or short.

So is it over-hyped? Yes, you could say that. The crowds do take you out of it just enough where sometimes it feels like you’re in a theme park, but you can still be amazed by it, find special moments where you least expect it ( Fira to Oia hike comes to mind ), and discover areas that are off-the-beaten-path.

When are you going? How crowded it is depends on the time of the year you’re going. When thinking about the best time to visit Santorini , the shoulder seasons in May-June and September-October are great because the weather is fantastic while the cruise loads have yet to start or are dwindling, and it’s just a lower season for travel.

When it comes to whether Santorini is worth it or not, there are a few more things I can think of that go against it.

It’s expensive

shopping in fira santorini

All that popularity has resulted in the sky-rocketing of prices. If you’re looking for a prime balcony view from the caldera cliff towards the volcano or Oia, you’re talking about massive premium.

When I look at the costs of our trip which I breakdown in the detailed Greek Islands travel guide , the 3 nights we had at Prekas Apartments was a big part of the budget. Sure, we found a great deal but as smart-spending travellers, there was no way to get around this. You have to pay for the views as we describe in our guide on the best area to stay in Santorini .

The domino effect of price also cascades to everything from tours, car rentals, and restaurants.

Reservations

That’s a great segue to food. While the food was actually quite good, you could tell that the prices were just a tick higher than the other islands we visited while island hopping .

For those that go in unprepared, you’ll be quite frustrated with Santorini because if you don’t make reservations ahead of time, you’re going to get turned away or end up eating really late at night.

WAIT HOW MANY DAYS DO I NEED IN SANTORINI?

A tough question requires another guide to help breakdown your options depending on the type of traveller you are, what your other travel plans are, and how many days you can afford.

How many days in Santorini Do You Need?

This is why we can’t have nice things

Back to the crowds for a second. I know I’m beating a dead horse here, but one of the things you end up having to contend with are the lengths that people will go to take photos and also what I will call “dumb travellers” that blatantly disrespect the land, environment, local customs, and rules.

Unfortunately, doing dumb things is contagious so be on the lookout and call them out if you see it.

The beaches are ok

where to go in santorini red beach

Beaches are part of the package when you go to Santorini but don’t expect to be blown away.

There’s for sure a uniqueness to the red sand and black sand beaches you’ll find on the island but I can’t say that they’re the most comfortable beaches because of their geology.

Donkeys and mules

I’ll admit it, I’ve taken donkeys from the old ferry terminal up to Fira and also back up from Ammoudi Bay but the more I’ve educated myself, the more I learn about the poor treatment of these animals, their spinal injuries, saddle sores, and exhaustion.

Tourists are now urged to avoid riding donkeys .

Not as authentic

crazy line ups to take photos of the blue churches in oia

I’m not saying Santorini isn’t authentic but with traditional itineraries and all of its touristy stops, you won’t see the true Greek islander life.

Let’s just say, on Santorini, it would be a rare sighting to see locals sipping on a cup of espresso in solitude.

14 Day Greek Island Hopping Itinerary

I’ve always found itineraries to be the best way to help with trip planning. You may not use this in its entirety but if you have 2 weeks to work with, we had one of our best trips all time in the Western Cyclades.

When thinking about whether Santorini is worth it, there is still plenty of reasons why the above shouldn’t stop you from going.

There’s a tranquil side to Santorini

ancient traditional village of pyrgos in santorini to get away from the crowds

The problem with Santorini is that everyone wants to go to the same places which is why you have the issue with crowds. What locals and I want you to know is that there is much more to the island than sunset opportunities.

A few ideas to look at to take you off-the-beaten-path:

  • Walk the island’s interior villages such as Megalochori , Emporio , Pyrgos
  • Archeological site at Akrotiri
  • Numerous wineries including Domaine Sigalas
  • Beaches at Perívolos
  • Go horseback riding to Eros Beach
  • Sunset sea kayak and snorkel
  • Wine tasting and cooking class

You can find deals in Santorini

Accommodations don’t have to be expensive. If you think about it, you’re going to be barely in your room and in most cases, enjoying the sunset somewhere else so save your money and opt for a room in Pyrgos , Perissa , or Kamari .

Remember to take a look at VRBO as well with gems that can be found for less than $100 like this villa in Perissa .

The volcano is pretty amazing

is santorini worth it hiking the volcano in excursion

One thing that you won’t really find on other islands is the volcanic center of Santorini. Being the most active part of the South Aegean Volcanic Arc , not only do you have the impressive crescent cliff wall but you also have Nea Kameni which is a volcanic island that can be visited by cruise.

While volcanic activity is evident throughout Santorini, it’s front-and-center here. The other activity you’ll find here are the sulphurous hot springs which are always treat.

The finer things

If you’re looking for high-end hotels, luxury spas, modern touches, and butler-type services, Santorini is one of the few islands where those are widely available.

That said, you can definitely find luxury in Mykonos , Kéa , and Ios to name a few.

The right expectations

I personally find that travelling with the right expectations is always the key to enjoying a destination.

Nowhere is perfect and so if you can take the negatives and go in knowing that it’ll be crowded in certain areas and be able to laugh it off, those things will make less of an impact on your trip.

Where You Should Stay in Santorini

Where is the best area in Santorini to stay? Is Fira and Oia worth it? Read on to find out an honest look at each of the major towns and why you should consider each.

Where To Stay in Santorini

panorama of oia crowds at sunset in santorini

Fear of missing out or FOMO is strong in this one. As you make up your mind, something that will pull you hard is that if you’ve never been or your travel partner(s) haven’t been, do you want to plan a trip to Greece without having been to Santorini?

It’s probably not exactly what you want to hear but in both trips and especially my last one with my wife, this rang true.

Keep in mind that I had been before so I didn’t have a particularly strong yearning to go back despite my fond memories. That said, my wife hadn’t been and she wanted to see it so I made sure it was as kick-ass as I could make 3 days in Santorini .

Ask my wife and she’ll tell you without blinking an eye that Santorini was her least favourite island but she’s glad she got to go. It doesn’t get as brutally honest as that.

As of May 1, 2022 , all COVID-19 entry rules have been dropped in Greece.

This means that all travellers, regardless of their country of origin, can enter the country without having to provide COVID-19 documentation (this means either a vaccination, recovery, or test certificate) upon their arrival.

Also, all domestic COVID-19 measures have been dropped as well so COVID-19 documents won’t be checked.

Lastly, the previous passenger locator form is no longer required for either flights or ferries.

For the most up to date entry-requirements visit the official Greece travel page .

That said, things have gotten ugly with the ‘worst season ever’ on Santorini so the bad news is that the situation hasn’t gotten better.

volcano day trip santorini

There’s so many ways you can slice and dice it as you’ve seen above but if I boil it all down, here are a decision tree that makes it super simple.

Have you been to Santorini before?

  • Yes -> Skip Santorini
  • No -> Add Santorini

The key though is to add 1 or 2 other Greek Islands to your trip to really see how different they can be island to island. By contrasting Santorini with say Folegandros (our favorite), Paros , and Milos , you’ll be able to easily figure out what style you like.

Oh and try to avoid going by cruise if you can.

I’ll tell you now that you’ll definitely want to go back to the Western Cyclades.

Use this Ferry Planning Tool

FerryHopper allows you to find out what ferry companies are operating to and from Santorini. We recommend using this to help with trip planning.

So is Santorini worth it? For me, the allure of the sunset is still strong and as a photographer, it’s hard to deny that my best photos in Greece are from Santorini.

Our stay at Prekas Apartments with that caldera balcony view was incredibly memorable and I’d recommend staying in Imerovigli to anyone. A more detailed breakdown of where to stay can be found in this article on the best areas to stay in Santorini .

Still, Santorini will have to be low on my favourite islands simply because in our 14 days in Greece , the intimate charm of islands such as Folegandros just can’t be beat. After all, when you’re visiting the Western Cyclades, you’re seeking tranquil paradise where you can mingle with locals, hike down to hidden beaches, coast on quiet roads, while also see iconic whitewashed buildings, windmills, and epic sunsets.

Without the comparison of all the islands we visited, we probably wouldn’t have known what we were missing so I’m glad we got to experience a fuller range of what the Greek Islands have to offer.

Yes, Santorini is incredibly safe with little to no crime due to hospitable and friendly locals. The biggest risk you’ll find on the island comes from vehicle accidents since many people rent ATVs and freak accidents from cliff erosion, falling rock, donkeys, and water sports.

Overall, a day on Santorini isn’t worth it especially if you factor in the travel required from other locations such as Athens, Mykonos, Crete, Naxos and Paros. When you build into your day ferry schedules, buses, and flights, you’re left with very few hours on Santorini to truly enjoy what the island has to offer. If you’re looking to watch the sunset then there’s really no way to do it in a day. If you’re really right on time and want to squeeze it in, there are full day boat trips from Chania , Heraklion , Rethymnon , Naxos , and Paros .

In certain areas it is as most travellers will flock to the popular spots along the caldera especially the sunset from Oia and Fira. However, if you venture off-the-path, there are plenty of places that don’t get as much attention such as Perissa, Megolachori, Emporio, Pyrgos, and Kamari on the island.

There’s something truly magical about the white-washed houses, ancient windmills, and cobalt blue domes that seemingly cling to the edges of the cliff. As far as Greek islands go, Santorini is undeniably beautiful and why it’s so popular.

No matter what you’ve heard or thought you have on Santorini, if you’ve never been, I suggest that you go there once and explore the island properly and that means to not go via cruise ship. Spend at least 3 days to see the popular spots and also the lesser-known regions.

To do all of Santorini by foot would be difficult but Fira (Thira) all the way to Oia is connected by boulevards and trails. Therefore, you can certainly walk and explore the most popular parts of the island by foot.

As of May 1, 2022, all COVID restrictions have been dropped and the previous passenger locator form is no longer required either. Things are getting back to normal in Santorini. Travellers are going back in large flocks but it is definitely not as busy as its heyday in say 2019.

It’s a matter of demand and supply. With millions of tourists each year, the island gets absolutely packed during its high season in the summer. This means the popular parts of the island between Fira and Oia to be quite expensive and easily double of a hotel in Athens. Don’t be surprised to see rates of $250 USD or more per night in Santorini. Following suit are more expensive shops and restaurants. That said, you can always find cheaper accommodations on less popular parts of the island such as Perissa and Kamari .

The reason why Santorini is always on someone’s list of the most beautiful islands in the world is because it has all of the romantic and stunning visuals fit for magazines – white-washed houses, blue domed churches, turquoise waters, classic windmills, boat excursions, volcanic island, wine-tasting, black-sand beaches, and extraordinary sunsets.

Based on ferry schedules and proximity, the full cluster of Western Cycladic islands are a great choice including Paros , Naxos, Mykonos, Sifnos, Folegandros , Ios, Serifos, and Milos .

For the absolute best time to visit Santorini , it would have to be in May-June and September-October.

Credit cards: Don’t get burned by hidden fees on top of terrible exchange rates. When we travel now, we use the Wise Card . Simply load it with the currency you need before you go and use it as a regular VISA or their digital wallet card. Use their free app to track how much you have and top up when you need to.

Flights: Of all the booking search engines, Skyscanner is the most helpful and easy to use thanks to their Everywhere feature . Kayak is also another that’s we will often check as well.

Car Rental: If you’re looking to save money, these car rental coupon codes will be a true game-changer. Otherwise, DiscoverCars and RentalCars are great places to start.

park sleep fly airport parking discount code

Airport Parking: You’ll need a spot to leave your car at the airport so why not book a spot at a discount. Use code AWESOME7 to get at least $5 off at Airport Parking Reservations or Park Sleep Fly packages.

Wifi Hotspot: We’ve been a huge fan of wifi hotspot devices such as PokeFi (use code GAP24300 ) because their rates are are hard to beat and it works globally. Solis is another that we recommend. Pros are that you can share the wifi with your whole group but cons are that you have to invest in a device and you have to charge it every night.

eSIM: Lately, we’ve really loved using eSIMs. The one we find using the most is Airalo . Save money by getting region-specific eSIMs and use referral code WILLIA9500 to get $3 USD credit on your first purchase. Ubigi is another one that we’ve had success with where they uniquely offer 5G coverage. Use code AWESOME10 to save 10% on your first order. The newest eSIM we’ve tried is KnowRoaming that sneakily has great rates on unlimited plans. We’ve partnered with them to give you a custom code GAP10 to save you 10%.

Hotels: Our go-to is Booking.com because they have the best inventory of properties including hotels and B&Bs plus they have their Genius tier discounts . The exception is Asia where Agoda always has the best prices. TripAdvisor is also useful for reviews and bookings.

Vacation Rentals: Your first instinct will be to check Airbnb but we always recommend checking VRBO as well if you’re looking for a vacation rental.

Tours: When planning our trips, we always check both Viator and GetYourGuide to at least see what’s out there in the destination that we’re going to. They often have different offerings and prices so check both.

We visited late April this year and it was spectacular. Hotel and restaurant prices inside the Volcanic bowl (Caldera) were expensive, but eating out where the local ate was far more affordable. An air-conditioned shuttle bus runs around the island, and is dirt cheap. Our “superior cave” accomodation included outside jaccuzzi with classic view and a massive cooked breakfast was around 250 pounds per night for 2 people at Rocca a Mare.

5 Tips for Visiting One of Greece’s Most Popular Islands — Without the Crowds

Is it still possible to visit Santorini without having to fight your way past scores of selfie-takers? Yes, it actually is.

volcano day trip santorini

Timing Is Everything

Location, location, location, pick your perch with care, get on your feet, take to the waves.

Courtesy of Grace Hotel, Auberge Resorts Collection

We’ve all seen the pictures on our social media feeds: the white roofs, dramatic cliffs, and deep-blue seas of Santorini. What those pictures don’t show — and what is more often than not the reality of visiting this beloved Cycladic island — are the crowds.

The 47-square-mile island, which has around 15,500 year-round residents, is expecting an incredible 3.4 million visitors this season, over 1 million of them day-trippers arriving via cruise ship.

I wanted to find out if it was still possible to visit Santorini without having to fight my way past scores of selfie-takers every time I stepped out of my hotel. The answer was an unequivocal yes — but only if you follow these golden rules.

Most of us want to visit Greece in high summer when the weather is beach-optimal and tourist-facing businesses are up and running. But if you can travel outside of the European school holidays in May, June, or September, you’ll notice the place is significantly less busy. And the weather, while still reliably sunny, won’t be oppressively hot.

The town of Oia has unrivaled views of Santorini’s iconic caldera, but it’s also where the majority of the island’s hotels are located—and where most cruise passengers head to take photos as the sun goes down. As a result, the narrow pathways along Oia’s clifftop are often very crowded in high season, especially in the evenings.

We were based in the town of Imerovigli, across the bay from Oia, but with equally dramatic caldera views. Access is slightly less straightforward, as you have to park above the town and walk to most locations. This means fewer people and a greater sense of space.

volcano day trip santorini

We stayed at Grace Hotel, an Auberge Resort Collection — recently voted one of the Top 10 resorts in Greece in Travel + Leisure ’s World’s Best Awards. It’s located on the edge of the caldera in Imerovigli and has incredible sunset views. It’s also the lowest property on that part of the cliff, meaning you look straight down to the ocean rather than staring at guests in other hotels.

Something you’ll notice about Santorini is that many older properties offer suites with plunge pools about the size of a typical hot tub. Not so at Grace: Besides a shared, full-sized infinity pool overlooking the ocean, guests in the newly-launched Infinity Suites have their own terrace with a private, infinity-edge plunge pool. (Note that Grace Hotel doesn’t take kids, but families can book the hotel’s stunning two-bedroom villa.)

Driving — especially parking — can be a pain in Santorini: Traffic is often a problem, and cars must take long detours to bypass the town centers. Conversely, walking is a breeze, as the cliffs along the caldera are lined with paved, walkable pathways.

Those searching for bragging rights can tackle the 6-mile Fira to Oia route. I was traveling with my two kids, ages 7 and 11, so we opted for something more manageable: the hike around Skaros Rock, once the site of a Byzantine fortress, and today a craggy, dramatic, but not especially challenging walk from Imerovigli. Just make sure you set off early in the morning or late in the afternoon when temperatures are cooler. And take plenty of water!

Santorini isn’t known for its beaches, which is good, as they’re typically not that busy. We spent a day at Seaside, a beach club on the pleasingly crowd-free black sand bay of Perivolos. It’s a Champagne and sushi kind of place, with prices to match, but if you’re looking to spend a few peaceful hours taking dips in the ocean and lounging in a cabana, this is a great option.

For a swim at the opposite end of the luxury spectrum, head to the former fishing village of Ammoudi. Here, you’ll find old-school tavernas lining the seafront in front of spectacular rust-red cliffs (we loved the shrimp and calamari at Dimitris Ammoudi Taverna). After lunch, walk about five minutes along the coastal path next to the restaurant until you reach the secret swimming spot in front of Agios Nikolaos church.
