Frequently asked questions.
- What is the best way to see most of the Gold Coast? Seeing most of the Gold Coast is dependent upon how much time you have and what transport you have arranged. One of the easier and most flexible ways to explore the Gold Coast is to hire a car and set up the satellite navigation system to guide you to some of our most notable attractions. We recommend you call into a Visitor Information Centre for suggestions and directions before you depart, which will ensure you maximise the time you have to explore. But if you are considering joining a tour, consider focusing on a certain area of the Gold Coast - such as the Gold Coast Hinterland, and by exploring beside a local, you’re likely to learn so much more than if you head out on your own.
- How do I get to the Great Barrier Reef from the Gold Coast? One of the Gold Coast’s best-kept secrets is that a one-of-a-kind day tour departs from the Gold Coast Airport to reach the southernmost tip of the Great Barrier Reef at Lady Elliot Island. It’s an early start, but you may see first light illuminate the Surfers Paradise skyline before marvelling at spectacular views of Moreton and Fraser Islands as you track towards Lady Elliot Island. This tiny coral cay is on the Southern Great Barrier Reef, and with a day to explore, join a guided snorkel safari in clear waters to hover over vibrant corals and meet some of the curious creatures that call the Great Barrier Reef home. You’ll likely see sea turtles, myriad fish and perhaps even some majestic manta rays. A sumptuous buffet lunch is included also, and time to join a fish feeding tour and admire nesting sea birds (in season). Enjoy an equally scenic flight home and land on the Gold Coast in time for dinner.
- How do I arrange to go on a whale-watching tour? There are several Gold Coast operators providing whale watching tours, which run seasonally (late May to October) departing from many locations including Surfers Paradise, Main Beach and Runaway Bay. Some consider the best time for whale watching to be August, which is the peak time for whale migration and when mating season is in full swing. All whale watching cruises follow the same route, and tours work with each other to advise when a whale is spotted so everyone has the best chance of seeing these magnificent creatures. Whales can also easily be spotted from the shore at some of the Gold Coast’s headlands including Burleigh, Currumbin and Point Danger and during whale season, if you are underwater, you may also hear them singing.
- What are the best Indigenous experiences on the Gold Coast? Connect deeply to the Gold Coast’s ancient Indigenous culture on a walking tour guided by traditional custodians of the Yugambeh language group at Dreaming Mountain (Jellurgal), located at the base of Burleigh Headland. Be welcomed onto country by traditional owners and listen to dreaming stories that share the creation of Jellurgal, while following a rainforest fringed walkway learning about traditional life, spotting bush tucker and native Australian animals and discovering the deep spiritual connection Yugambeh peoples have with country. Visit the Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre’s Art Gallery to admire stunning Indigenous art and artefacts including boomerangs, null nullas and dilly bags and visit the gift shop after to take home a unique souvenir. Kids-specific Walkabout Tours are available on school holidays.
- What are the most unique tours you can do on the Gold Coast? You’ll find some of our more unique tours located in the Gold Coast Hinterland, which is easily accessed on a day trip from the Gold Coast. From visiting caves filled with glowworms, having a picnic date with an alpaca and sampling liquors from the oldest craft Distillery in Queensland that holds the enviable record of the most awards achieved in Australia this century! If staying closer to the coast is your preference, there’s plenty to do. Hop aboard a scenic city tour that turns into an immersive aqua adventure on a purpose-built amphibious tour bus. Join a whale watching tour to see the Humpback Highway at close range or join a jet-ski tour to explore our beautiful waterways.
- Are there any tours that offer accessible options? Accessibility is an integral part of the Gold Coast visitor experience and there's a wide range of tours that cater for all abilities. From whale watching, jet boating, theme park visits, wildlife encounters, cruises and skydiving - to name just a few. Planning is key, and online information is readily available on most tour operator websites, however, we would also suggest calling ahead to speak to the tour organiser to discuss the assistance you may need and ensure the tour you are interested in is suitable for you. You can find more information in the official Queensland Government Accessibility Guide to the Gold Coast to help with planning the perfect holiday to the Gold Coast.
- What are the best tours to do with families on the Gold Coast? Families are well catered for on the Gold Coast, with several exciting tours on offer that will thrill kids and adults alike. From unique animal encounters and behind-the-scenes tours to the chance to become a ranger for a day at our animal sanctuaries to hosting an alpaca picnic. Complete thrilling tree top challenges, take a river cruise and whale watch or see glow worms light up a cave at night. There are also family surf lessons to try, escape rooms to conquer and private tours that can build your family the perfect itinerary with the time you have available to explore, so you can sit back, relax and enjoy quality time together.
- What’s the best way to see the Gold Coast Hinterland? A number of tours depart from the Gold Coast and take the scenic hour-long drive to the Gold Coast Hinterland which offers a completely different experience to the coast. Depending on your tour preferences, you can arrange a visit to the ancient Gondwana rainforest, watch waterfalls tumble, embark on a bush walk, step into caves illuminated by glowworms and feast on fabulous fresh local fare. The Gold Coast Hinterland is where most of our vineyards live, so a winery tour will take you on a pleasant day of cellar door tastings and gorging on gourmet goodies for lunch, or perhaps you’d like to take a hot air balloon flight that concludes with a champagne breakfast? All is possible on the GC.
- Is there a central place I can go to book my tours? Yes, you’ll find two Visitor Information Centres located on the Gold Coast. One at the Gold Coast Airport and another on Cavill Ave in Surfers Paradise. Friendly assistants can help you find the perfect tours that will suit the length of time you are staying and also, suggest activities you might like to try. Bookings for tours can also be made at these Visitor Information Centres and a range of brochures, itineraries and options are available for you to peruse and take with you if you are not ready to decide.
- Can I book a tour that has guides that speak my language? Yes, JPT Tours provides tours to all the most popular Gold Coast attractions with English, Japanese, and Chinese-speaking guides, plus other languages on request. From arranging your airport transfers to your hotel, tours on the ground while you are visiting and helping you to make the most of your stay, the friendly team at JPT will be happy to assist you.

What are the Best Day Trips from the Gold Coast?
I have a huge selection of activities below, together with a specially curated Map to help get you out of your hotel room for the entire day. Whether it’s for a few hours, or several items, I’m sure there is a few things that resonate with you.
1. Lamington National Park
The Lamington National Park was UNESCO World Heritage listed for part of the Gondwana Rainforest in 1994 and is where you’ll find O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat. After your scenic drive, you have several different hikes on offer and a popular retreat to visit for a day trip.
➡ Compare prices for Lamington National Park Tours HERE with Get Your Guide
The free Tree Top walk (Booyong) is a big favourite, and only 800 metres return along the suspended bridge. It consists of nine suspension bridges around 16 metres above the ground.
2. South Stradbroke Island
Can you believe that South Stradbroke Island is just a short distance from the city life? There are no cars, but it is accessed by water transportation like Boats, riding a Jet Ski, and kayaks. You also will find some nice clear waters, areas to yourself, and beautiful white sandy shores.
➡ Compare prices for South Straddie tours HERE with Viator.
You can snorkel here too, but with a lacking of coral around, the underwater creatures can be very random. One popular stop would be visiting the Couran Cove Island Resort, which is located on the west side.
3. Moreton Island & Tangalooma
There is a Ferry to Moreton Island leaving from either Pinkenba or from the Brisbane Port. Day trip tours can differ from snorkeling and exploring the wrecks, or spending the day at the Tangalooma Island Resort .
➡ Compare prices for Moreton Tours on Get Your Guide HERE – Or find more with Viator HERE
This is your chance for an beachfront escape on the worlds third largest sand island . Along with so much to do, from Snorkelling or diving the wrecks, swimming on the beach/pools, the nightly Wild Dolphin feeding or parasailing. Additionally, on land, you can enjoy the sand dunes, four-wheel driving, or having some cocktails at the bar.
4. Whale Watching
Check out this seasonal activity around May to November, with the Annual Humpback Whale migration. Each year, some 1,200 humpbacks make an epic 5,000 km journey between Antarctica and Australia and then back again.
➡ Compare prices for Whale Watching Tours on Get Your Guide HERE
Therefore, you have the unique opportunity to venture out on the water and experience this marvel first hand. Enjoy a tour on a comfortable catamaran out on the open water. Ultimately, watching the Humpback whales breach the surface and hopefully put on a show.
5. Theme Parks
All the different Theme Parks are what draw thousands of families and holidaymakers to the region. You have so many Parks to choose from, with their own draw cards and unique attractions and each park will need a whole day to visit. This comes down to water slides, rollercoasters, thrill rides, animals, and plenty of other entertainment.
Purchasing passes from each individual park can be rather costly, but there are ways to save some money with the same company’s. SeaWorld, Wet N Wild, Paradise Country & Movieworld are one company, and Dreamworld, White Water World is the other.
6. Lady Elliot Island
Lady Elliot Island is one of your first points to access the The Great Barrier Reef, one of the wonders of the world. And, access to this area, comes from flights that leave Coolangatta. The trip can be expensive, but you can take advantage of the opportunity if you’re not travelling further north on your own.
A day spent at Lady Elliott Island happens to be one of best snorkelling sites , a and chance to swim with turtles, and other marine life. On land, you can explore and learn about the history of the Island, The Lighthouse, and Bird Habitat.
7. Jet Boat or Jet Ski Rides
Get your adrenalin pumping and fire up your speed zone on several local waterways. You can either ride your own Jet Ski on a tour with one or two people or join a bigger group and perform 360’s in a Jetboat. Either way, you going to have the ride of your life and put a big smile on your face.
There are several different company’s you can choose from, and some will even have deals to do both activities. These are located anywhere from Main Beach, Surfers Paradise to Broadbeach, and will sometimes include hotel pickups.
8. North Stradbroke Island
The Island of North Stradbroke (or Minjerribah) is a little different from Moreton Island, where you have over 2000 people permanently living there. Therefore, you have plenty of options to get around, beaches to explore, places to eat and drink, public transport, and accommodation.
➡ Tours leave from Brisbane, so compare prices for Stradbroke Island Tours on Get Your Guide HERE
If you only have the day to explore , then you could start with the following. Hanging out on the beach, surfing, or completing the Gorge Walk at Point Lookout would all be a great start.
Check out my Photo Gallery for sample tourism images needed for websites, blog posts, magazines articles, Marketing and/or Advertisement’s.
9. Natural Bridge
Marvel at Natural Bridge, located in the Springbrook National Park and about 1 hour inland from Surfers Paradise. This is a different kind of waterfall where you can watch from above, with the water disappearing into a big hole. Along with underneath, where the waterfall crashes into the waterhole.
➡ Compare prices for Springbrook NP & Natural Bridge Tours HERE with Get Your Guide
Ultimately, rain is always a factor with any waterfall, but this one seems to be running all year round. You can take an easy one-kilometre walking path with a slight elevation and some stairs, but easy for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. And, if you visit at night, there is a chance to see the amazing glow worms hidden among the moss-covered rock walls.
10. Purling Brook Falls
The complete Purling Brook Falls hike is about 4 kilometres in length and will take about 2 hours to complete. The track is formed, but there is a steep elevation to get back to the car park. There is a lookout at the top to see the waterfall, but a better view below from the gully.
It’s a loop track, with the waterhole about halfway. However, the waterfall is more prominent in the summer months after the rain. It’s a beautiful walk passing through the eucalypt forest in the Springbrook Plateau and crossing over a suspension bridge.
11. Southbank, Brisbane
Enjoy this trip to Brisbane and go North for a popular entertainment district. The Suburb of South Bank is located straight across the river from Brisbane City and is visited by millions of tourists each year.
You’ll find the Arts district with Museum, the library and stage theatre. Markets are held every weekend, along with special events and festivals. A variety of food and drink options with many cafes and restaurants. Furthermore, catering for those inner-city beachgoers with the man-made, patrolled Street’s Beach.
12. Mount Tamborine
Mount Tamborine National Park is 30 minutes from Surfers Paradise and the perfect spot to include in a short road trip from the city. If you’re seeking a green change and a place to admire the Mountains, then immerse yourself in the local food and arts.
➡ Compare prices for Tamborine Mountain Tours HERE with Get Your Guide
Go chasing waterfalls like Cedar Creek or Curtis Falls, soar above the sky in a Hot Air Balloon, or try some delectable wines. Additionally, there is the Tree Top challenge experience, or strolling along the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk.
13. Mount Warning
Mt Warning is located across the border in New South Wales and 1.5 hours from Surfers Paradise. It’s another activity for those Hiking fans and very challenging to those that aren’t used to elevated walks or lots of stairs.
It’s almost 9 kilometres return and requires a good level of fitness to get up. The track is nicely formed, heaps of stairs, and you might need to stop a few times to catch your breath. Once at the top, the views are amazing and well worth the effort you just put in to get there.
14. Dracula’s Cabaret Restaurant
Take the night off and be entertained at the Dracula’s Cabaret restaurant in Broadbeach. As soon as you arrive, the staff are in character and expect the night full of laugh’s, skits and a singing performance. Your fed a three course dinner with a nightly vampire theme and waited on for drinks the entire night.
➡ Book your tickets to the Dracula’s Cabaret Restaurant with Viator HERE
15. Scuba Diving or Snorkelling
Snorkelling or diving is a wonderful way to experience a different side of the Queensland coast – Being Underwater. Obviously, snorkelling is a little more accessible and done anywhere, but the closest I have come to any snorkelling was South Stradbroke Island, which was part of a Kayaking trip from Southport.
Apart from that, If you do have the opportunity to dive, then you are going to come across much more marine life. Learning to dive really changed my life and can open up a whole new world.
16. Indoor Sky Diving
Sky diving might be something on your bucket list , but the thought of jumping out of a plane is a little daunting. This is why the IFLY Skydiving centre might be more up your alley! You can experience the effects of Sky Diving in a safe, controlled environment.
➡ Book your tickets for the IFly Indoor Skydiving Tickets HERE
I’ve seen small children to the older generation try out the IFLY Sky Diving, and you’ll start off with getting suited up and going through the safety briefing. The first-timers will always have a guide in there with you to manoeuvre you around and teach you how to stay up.
17. Aqua Duck or QuackADuck Ride
The Aqua duck rides are generally completed in about a hour and leaves close by Cavill Avenue in Surfers Paradise. As a first-timer, you’re taken on a short land tour, before splashing into the waterways.
➡ Compare prices for Duck bundle tours on Get Your Guide HERE
You see, the Aqua Duck is an amphibious vehicle and can drive on both land and Water. You will only find a few of these around Australia and one similar in Agnes Water / 1770 called the Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo / or LARC. Therefore, you very lucky to have a popular, “suits-everyone” boat ride available to you here.
18. Girraween National Park
If you like hiking, then the Girraween National Parks walking trails will be well worth it. There are two different hiking trails that I would recommend, and best to start them both in the mornings. Don’t forget to take enough supplies for the day including, a hat, sunscreen, plenty of water, snacks, and a good pair of hiking shoes.
The Pyramid Track is shorter of the two, extremely elevated, and if you can make it to the top, you will see some amazing views and the famous Balancing rock. Alternatively, the Sphinx and Turtle rock hike has elevated sections, but a lot easier for those that can’t do the Pyramid Track. Listen out for a mass amount of cicadas!
19. Skypoint Climb & Observation Deck
There are two different experiences here and available right in the heart of Surfers Paradise. The Q1 Building is the eleventh highest building in the world(as of 2021). On level 77, you have an observation deck available to everyone, with 360-degree views behind thick glass.
Here you can see the entire city skyline including, the inland waterways and hinterland. This is a popular, must-do, bucket list item and easily accessible from anywhere along the coast.
Additionally, and for those extreme junkies, you have the Skypoint Climb . This lets you exit outside the glass on level 77 and allows you to climb up, and around the top of the building. You can feel secure strapped into the railing, but you’re going to feel the wind and clear views straight down, over the edge.
20. Winery Tours
Are you a wine lover looking for a new adventures? Look no further than winery tours (or maybe a craft beer tour)! There are tour options for small and large groups, and they can be tailored to your specific tastes.
➡ Compare prices for Winery Tours HERE with Get Your Guide.
This includes romantic tours for couples to group tastings with friends. You’ll get the chance to visit beautiful wineries, learn about the winemaking process, and taste some delicious wines.
21. Hot Air Balloon Ride
A Hot Air Balloon experience is something you’re not going to forget quickly. Expect a very early start and at least 4 to 5 hours to complete. The morning will have you witnessing the setup, blowing the balloon up, enjoying the ride, and finally, packing everything up. This all takes time, but it’s interesting to learn how it all comes together.
➡ Compare prices for Hot Air Balloon Rides HERE
Unless your purchase a tour with included transport, you’re probably going to need your own vehicle, or at least hire one. This means most Hot Air balloons leave from open grassy areas and are well away from the big city’s.
22. Surfing
Have you ever wanted to learn to surf or want to find the best places to go surfing for the day? Then look no further and you have so many different beaches stretching over 50 kilometres down the city skyline. Obviously, the waves are dependent on the daily tides and wind, but you will find the locals are always out there somewhere, giving it a go.
➡ Compare prices for Group Surfing Lessons HERE – These leave from various spots along the beaches.
As a suggestion, you can find some of the best surfing spots at Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Currumbin Alley, Snapper Rocks, Burleigh Point & Duranbah Beach. These are obviously not your only options and depend on how big you want the waves.
23. Paddle Boarding
Suppose you’re looking for a new and exciting way to enjoy the sunny beaches. In that case, paddle boarding is definitely worth a try. It is a fantastic full-body workout, and paddle boarding offers breathtaking ocean views as you glide through the water.
Plus, paddle boarding can be enjoyed solo, with friends, or with an entire group, making it perfect for both relaxation and friendly competition. So next time you visit, don’t just stick to sunbathing on the beach – get out on the water and give paddle boarding a go!
24. Currumbin Sanctuary
You’re definitely going to have fun at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary . I found this to be a very good park for animal interactions and fewer cages restricting the animals. If you looking at seeing a lot of Australian animals, then this is a great place to start. Plenty of Kangaroos , Emu’s, Birds, Snakes, and so much more.
➡ Compare prices for the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary Tickets HERE
Additionally, the Lorikeet Bird Feeding happens at 8am and 4pm every day, outside the park. They are wild birds and come down from the local bushland to feed, which is free to watch, or a gold coin donation to help feed.
25. River Cruises & Sunset River Cruises
Are you looking for a unique and relaxing way to experience the beauty of this tourist hub? Whether you choose a leisurely daytime cruise or a romantic sunset cruise, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the city waterways, canals, and Broadwater.
➡ Compare prices for River/Sunset or Sightseeing Cruises HERE
All while it winds through lush greenery and picturesque cityscapes. Depending on the cruise you choose, you could enjoy delicious local cuisine and listen to informative commentary about the history and wildlife of the area.
26. Byron Bay
Byron Bay is a city on it’s own, with it’s beaches, local arts and crafts, diving at Julian Rocks and a backpacker haven. This is where you will be crossing the border and heading down the M1 highway to this well-known hippy town.
The Cape Byron Lighthouse happens to be the most Eastern Point in Australia. So, If you’re keen, there is a nice beachside, elevated hike up the mountain to visit. It’s also full of Unique shopping and dining experiences, and popular staged music festivals.
27. Sunshine Coast
The Sunshine Coast is located on the Northern side of South East Queensland and about 2 hours away from the Goldy. Although this is a little further than anything mentioned today, it’s still enough time for a day trip. The Sunshine Coast is very similar to the Goldy , but there is less people and less skyscrapers.
This means you have your inner city attractions, amazing beaches, and Rock pools swimming at Noosa. However you also have your rainforests with waterfall swimming at Kondalilla Falls or Gardners Falls and brilliant hiking views at Mount Ngungun.
Where to Stay?
Deciding where to stay can be daunting, with choices ranging from backpacker hostels to five-star luxury resorts. It’s important to consider what kind of atmosphere you’re looking for and how much you’re willing to spend.
➡ Compare prices for All Hotels HERE with Booking.com
No matter where you choose to stay, it has plenty of attractions within easy reach. However, you can find some great deals, especially if you book early. So start packing your bags and prepare for a sunny coast vacation!
Is it Worth Visiting
The Gold coast is worth visiting for the beaches and non-stop action, UNESCO World Heritage areas, National Parks and sunset cocktails. Whether you’re into surfing or browsing the shopping, nightlife or nature walks, this tourist hub has something for your whole group and should definitely be at the top of your list for a visit.
Best Time to visit
This is a gorgeous destination at any time of year. But the best time to visit truly depends on your interests. Summertime is the obvious choice if you love water activities like surfing and snorkelling. However, the hotter temperatures make it easier to lounge on the beach all day with a good book.
On the other hand, winter brings cooler temperatures and less crowded beaches – perfect for a peaceful getaway. It’s also the prime time to explore the hinterland, with hiking trails brimming with wildflowers and spectacular waterfalls.
How Many Days do you need?
When it comes to visiting, it’s hard to figure out just how many days you need. 3 days might seem like enough for a brief trip, but you’ll definitely miss out on some of the best attractions and hidden gems.
On the other hand, 5 days i s a reasonable amount of time for your first visit, allowing you to hit up all the main spots while still having some flexibility in your schedule.
And suppose you have the luxury of 7 or more days . In that case, that’s enough time for the ultimate experience!

Snapper Rocks returns to World Surf League championship tour in 2025 schedule shake-up
After five years in the surfing wilderness, Queensland's famous break Snapper Rocks is back on the World Surf League (WSL) championship tour.
The event will return to Coolangatta from 2025 after the WSL inked a four-year deal with the City of Gold Coast and Tourism and Events Queensland.
Snapper Rocks was the season opener for the elite surfing tour for two decades until the event was axed in a major shake-up to the schedule during the COVID pandemic.
The WSL took a break from competition during the first year of the pandemic and when it returned in 2021, the Gold Coast lost its hosting rights because of a dispute between the Queensland government and WSL over COVID restrictions.
The Queensland leg of the tour was moved to New South Wales.
For the past three years Snapper Rocks has instead hosted the opening event of the WSL's second-tier competition, the Challenger Series, as part of a revamped format for professional surfing.
The championship tour contest was an important part of the social fabric and surf culture of Coolangatta — a region that has produced more world champions than anywhere in the world.
Widespread impact
Three-time world champ and two-time winner at Snapper Rocks, Mick Fanning, said losing the event had been a heartbreaking blow to the community.
"To not have it here was so sad, not only for us surfers who want people [to] surf our waves, but also for the kids growing up seeing what the benchmark is and what is actually possible at their home break," he said.
Fanning welcomed its return.
"It's an event that's obviously close to my heart," he said.
"There is so much history that has gone on even before I was on tour.
"It's not just for Gold Coast kids, it's for everywhere — far north New South Wales, up the Sunny Coast — people would travel from all over."
Major attraction
Tourism and Events Queensland predicted the event's return to the Gold Coast would attract 14,000 fans and inject $2.9 million into the local economy.
The WSL is yet to reveal the 2025 schedule and whether Snapper's addition means another location is on the chopping block.
The 2024 Australian leg includes stops at Bells Beach in March and Margaret River April.
According to Experience Gold Coast, the city's peak tourism body, Snapper Rocks will be the third stop on the tour's 2025 Australian leg after events in Victoria and Western Australia.
It is likely the Gold Coast will the final event before the mid-season cut, or the first event after the cut.
Fanning said the WSL had made the right call.
"You have got to make sure the premier waves, the premier locations are on the world tour because that's where you want to see the best surfing done," he said.
"If that's the last event for the cut then that's incredible.
"It's a lot more predictable than Margaret River.
"You can let your surfing do the talking at Snapper, it's always fairly consistent there are not big changes throughout the day."
