Seat belts are essential in every vehicle and yet, they are usually uncomfortable to wear especially for a fussy toddler. The cute and soft belt pillow is a great comfort device that will provide some support for the child and they’ll have a travel buddy nearby. It is simple to use, easy to install, and soft to the touch. 

So which one to buy?

When it comes to choosing which comfort device to buy for my toddler, it was a decision between buying a full cover or just the foot rest. We knew, if we invested in a bed, the toddler would have great quality sleep on long-haul flights, however, it was really tempting to buy the foot rest because I could use it, too. 

We took the risk and bought the Plane Pal Airplane Seat Extender . Luckily, both of the toddlers would fall asleep, and when they’re awake, we can use it to lift our legs. The best thing about it is that lots of airlines accept it and it fits in nicely like a Tetris block on different-sized planes. 

Out of the neck travel pillows, the Trunki was our choice because of the lovely designs and the fact that our toddlers can put it on themselves. 

And finally, our little ones also enjoy the company of a unicorn and a dinosaur on their seatbelts. Even though we already had neck travel pillows, I couldn’t resist buying seat belt covers, knowing our toddlers will enjoy them and they’ll always have some soft support, especially when we forget to bring the neck travel pillow. 

CAN TODDLERS STILL USE A SEATBELT WHILE USING FOOT REST?  

If the cushions are used to rest their legs, you can still put a seatbelt over their belly.

The best kids’ travel pillow for long haul flights: They sleep, you relax!

I’ve been asked by quite a few people to write a round-up post about the best kids’ travel pillow for long haul flights – you know, the inflatable pillow / inflatable foot rests or convertible suitcases that become airplane toddler beds allowing your little one to stretch out and get a good night’s sleep on the plane.

Up until now, I’ve avoided recomme nding a flight pillow for kids travelling to Australia because I’ve never actually used a plane pillow for my kids and felt it would be difficult to offer a real review of the options of inflatable travel pillows for kids without having tried one out. Also, I wasn’t sure which airlines allow inflatable footrests as I keep reading they are banned with certain airlines so I (incorrectly) made an assumption that most airlines don’t allow kids’ inflatable travel pillows.

After a bit of research though, I realised it would make a useful post as many airlines do allow people to travel with a kids’ inflatable travel pillow, flight foot rests or foot hammocks. To make this post about the best travel pillow as fair as possible, I decided to ask my friends in the travel blogging community for their thoughts on the best foot hammock or best toddler travel bed for airplane travel out of the wide range of kids’ travel pillows on the market. After all, travel bloggers spend a lot of time in the air, so who better to road test the options for us! Plus by asking a pool of people for their thoughts on different products, it means we can learn about a wide range of the inflated travel pillows on the market right now.

Can I use kids’ travel pillows and inflatable foot rests on all flights?

Before I jump into the reviews of the flight pillows for kids from this awesome bunch of travel bloggers, I just need to say there has been a lot of talk about the safety of using a plane sleeping pillow for your kids on planes. As the travel sleep pillows go in the space between the seats, it blocks off the access to the lifejacket and could cause issues if you needed to make a quick exit.

Some airlines have banned some of the inflatable kids’ plane cushions. However, many of these kids’ flight pillows can still be used on selected airlines. You will need to double-check the most up-to-date information with your airline before you invest in a bed in a box or inflatable travel pillow for your next long haul flight to ensure you buy a brand that is accepted on the airlines you want to travel on. Where available, I will link to the list of airlines that accept the product on the kids’ flight pillow from the information on the product’s own website – this should hold the most up to date information about which airlines allow inflatable foot rests and kids’ flight hammocks. While the information about inflatable kids’ flight pillows in this post is accurate at the time of publication, things change so it’s always important to double-check with your airline for yourself as I can’t guarantee accuracy.

Can I use kids’ travel pillows and inflatable foot rests on my next flight? The simple answer is: Potentially, yes. But they aren’t all allowed with every airline so you need to do your research! 

Basic safety guidelines for using kids’ travel pillows as toddler beds

There are some basic safety rules when it comes to using inflatable travel pillows for toddlers and kids…

You cannot inflate or set up your kids’ travel pillows until the seatbelt sign has gone off and you’re at cruising altitude. During takeoff and landing, the item must be stowed away under the seat or in the overhead locker, depending on its size (this applies whether it is a footrest for long haul flights, an inflatable foot rest or a solid bedbox).

For this reason, the travel pillows for kids listed below are best used for long haul travel like flights to Australia – for short flights it’s often not worth the hassle of bringing a toddler travel pillow that takes a bit of effort to set up. However, for long haul flights, I’m told they are worth their weight in gold for the extra rest they give you! I do wish I’d bought them for our 2yo when we did our 24-hour journey to Australia as she barely slept the whole time and it was exhausting!

The First Class Kid Pillow is a low-cost, inflatable foot rest that you blow up and place between the seats. It can be used by kids to lay and sleep on, or it can be used as a blow-up footrest for any age to make you more comfortable stretching out on the flight.The 1st class kids travel pillow packs down quite small making it easy to transport.

The 1st Class Kid travel pillow is made from durable PVC and flocking (felt-style) material. You will need to inflate the first class kids travel pillow manually (check out this link on the 1st Class Kid pillow website for instructions) when you are at cruising altitude. It is recommended that you partially inflate and then finish the inflation when it is in situ so it sits snugly. Ideally, this works best in a window seat, although you can use it in any seat (you’d just need to move the sleeping child if someone in the window seat wanted to exit if you used it in the centre/aisle seats.)

‘The 1stClass Kids Pillow is an inflatable leg rest pillow that fills the legroom gap on the airplane. I have two of these pillows and have used them many times on long haul flights with my two kids.

The 1st Class Kid pillow is inflated by blowing into it using a mouthpiece. It does take a bit of puff, but I have managed to do both by myself, although you do get a little lightheaded! Once it is inflated it jams into the footwell and doesn’t move around. To achieve this you need to partially inflate it first, then do the final inflation once it is in position.

To deflate it you unscrew the valve and it deflates in seconds. Being inflatable means that it folds down very small and can easily fit into my kid’s hand luggage along with all their other things.

I have used these pillows on a variety of long haul airlines and never had an issue with being allowed to use it. I have never checked ahead and usually inflate them once the flight is well underway and without drawing attention to it! My kids have used them from ages 2 up to 6. My 7 year old still wants to use hers but is really too big for it now, although I have to confess to having snuck my feet onto it on occasion!’

The inflatable device seemed straightforward to use and came with a quick deflation valve that I thought was important for safety.

The product met our expectations. It is light, easy to inflate manually and made our children much more comfortable on our long haul flights than they would have been sitting upright. We used the pillows constantly from the ages of 2 until 4 when airline rules changed and they were no longer allowed on the long haul flights we took with Qantas. This coincided with a growth spurt and I think we would have had to abandon them anyway when the kids grew over 1 metre tall. At that stage their legs were too long to spread out while laying down.

Overall, we loved our flight pillows and they made a huge difference to the amount of sleep we could expect from our children. I recommend them wholeheartedly if you are flying on an airline that allows them.’

If you’re looking for an alternative to an inflatable sleeping travel pillow, Jetkids Bed Box is a premium airplane bed for a toddler worth considering. The JetKids BedBox by Stokke promotes that it offers ‘first class travel for kids’. Unlike the kids’ inflatable travel pillow options, this comes in a hard case with wheels. There is the Jet Kids Bed Box and also a Jet Kids Ride Box. The Stokke bed box cases are on wheels, allowing you to pull them around the airport and the ride on ones act like a Trunki where your kids can ride on them.

The bed box Jetkids product comes with a washable mattress and it fits most economy seats.

The Jet Kids Bed Box ride on functionality is recommended for ages 3-7 years. The bed feature isn’t aimed as an airplane bed for babies as it is recommended for children over two, so it’s really an airplane bed for kids. The idea is that your bedbox travel bed doubles up as your child’s hand luggage. The bed box case lid easily converts into a comfortable leg rest which is height and length adjustable. It is recommended that bedboxes be used on window seats to create plane beds for your kids to stretch out on. Alternately, you can also use this children’s flight bed in the centre of a centre row (i.e. where there is a row of three seats in the centre of the plane and you are in the middle of them).

‘The Jet Kids Bed Box is the first of it’s kind to come in a hard plastic casing, made to actually attach to the chair and create a firm bed in an economy class seat.  The Bed Box is multi-purpose, in that it can be used as a roll on suitcase for kids, as well as a sleep device.

We got to road test one not long after they were released with my then seven-year-old and five-year-old taking turns.  While it was good – it undoubtedly helped them to get more comfortable to sleep without playing plane Jenga – it hasn’t been an item we have continued to use.

My main reason is that the box is quite bulky. While useful for the flight, and great fun for the kids zooming around the airport, we then tend to struggle for what to do with it while travelling beyond the flight.  It’s not practical to use day to day travelling, so the kids still end up needing a small backpack as well.  Being hard plastic, we then found it difficult to store in the car while road tripping to our next destination – along with strollers, car seats and every other bit of paraphernalia travelling parents need!

As it is a hard case that’s made into a bed, there are mattress pieces stowed in the box for comfort. Whilst light, this does take up a fair bit of space inside the box so don’t expect much toy storage.  You have to keep the box stowed in the overhead locker until seat belt signs are off so you need storage space too.  On a coupled of flights we were not allowed to use the bed box so had to stow it as hand luggage. The next flight we just gave up and put it in the hold.

It takes a small amount of practice to learn how to flip the lid over to make the bed surface, and I struggled to get the box to stay still as it is on wheels.  A few times during the flight it started to roll away, it needed tying tighter to the chair underneath, which to me does raise a safety issue.  Correctly installed by the window seat (as we now know!) it shouldn’t be a problem, but would definitely impede access to your life jacket underneath.

It’s one of those items I’d suggest if you were only flying from A to B only makes perfect sense; but is not very useful for onward travel making it a big draw back for the travelling family, especially as we have three children to consider.  And like any of these products, it relies on you getting the right seat on the plane, with the right airline.  All up, worth the investment? Not in my opinion.’

‘We all know that flying with kids is much easier when your child is comfortable. And with the right foot pillow, travel on the plane with a baby or toddler can be more of a breeze.

As frequent travellers, we have managed to test out a range of these foot pillows and finally settled one the inflatable one simply due to the fact that they are much easier to port around (in comparison to those that you have to wheel behind you through the airport).

The FlyPal pillows are essentially a travel foot pillow that is made up out of two inflatable pillows.  When stacked up, those two pillows create a perfect flat surface extending the airplane seat, thus creating a very comfy bed for your little one. I really love the pillow for myself because I can inflate only the smaller of the pillows and use it for a foot rest.

You have to inflate the pillows by blowing into the large opening with your mouth. The process is quick and easy though – although you might get some curious stares from the passengers around you. Fortunately the pillows are just as easy to collapse as they are to inflate. Within 30 seconds, your FlyPal pillows are folded and stored away back in your backpack. Yes, the pillows do take a bit of space, but they are worth the hassle.

So far – touch wood – we have been allowed to use the pillows on all flight carriers that we have been on. I never ask permission prior and I must admit that I typically wait till the lights are out and food services have ended – so that it isn’t as visible.

As a safety measure it is important to only use the pillow on seats next to the window or on exit row seats. That way you won’t be blocking anyone way if an emergency comes around. We also prefer popping our daughter’s head on the seat, with her feet on the pillow because I feel that as soon as the seat in front of the pillow reclines that it might squash her head. Our pillow fits in super snug into the foot space so we have never had issues with it moving around whilst she was sleeping.

We started using foot pillows from around 8 months of age – mainly because our daughter was too big for the bassinet at that stage, and we still use it on every flight (Avalee is 2.5 years old now). We honestly find that our flights are so much more peaceful with the pillow. Our daughter isn’t used to sleeping in our arms, so she just settles so much easier on her own space and in her own ‘bed’.

And we all want a peaceful flight whenever we can get one.’

‘I bought a Fly Legs Up footrest for a long haul flight to California with my then 2-year-old

I went for this over a Jet Kids Bed Box on the basis of price, size and availability. One of the great things about the Fly Legs Up is that it comes in a small, lightweight bag that weighs less than 500g and which you can easily slip into your hand luggage (without it being your hand luggage).

The child version includes three inflatable cushions that you blow up and pop into the hammock that fits over the tray table. I found it quite easy to blow up the cushions, though you should be aware that this attracts attention… I did get some strange looks! However it doesn’t take long to blow up the cushions. Fitting the hammock is a bit fiddly the first time you do it, but once you’ve done it once you’ll be pretty quick at it the next time.

You pop the cushions into the hammock and they then effectively fill in the footwell space and create a flat surface for your kids to sleep or play on. One of the features I like is that you can add more air to the cushions or release some to create the right height. The cushions can also be used as footrests for adults when the kids aren’t using them.

It’s worth knowing that some airlines do not allow these to be used on safety grounds. However we didn’t have a problem with British Airways. I found getting the air out of the cushions quite simple and quick to do, but I guess it has to be said that in an emergency, it might not be as easy. Also, since the cushions block the footwell, if you have someone you don’t know sitting by the window, they’re unlikely to be too pleased. I haven’t encountered this myself since we’re always sitting as a family and taking up the full two/three seats.

I was impressed by Fly Legs Up and would recommend it to friends.’

The HOMCA travel footrest is an inflatable travel pillow that can be used as a travel bed for kids, or for adults to put their feet up in transit. It is made from PVC and washable flocking. The HOMCA toddler travel pillow is easy to inflate and deflate and is portable and lightweight (less than 400g). It also comes in a handy carry bag. HOMCA make a range of travel gadgets to help you rest easier on planes (something that is so handy when you’re travelling with kids !).

Unfortunately, I was unable to find a definitive list of airlines which this pillow can be used on so check with your airline.

‘As a family that does a lot of international travel, when our little one outgrew the airplane’s bassinet, we knew we needed a toddler bed to use on flights.  We decided that the easiest and most affordable option was a foot pillow.

Typically, I’m an amazon review junky, but I found that a lot of the inflatable foot pillows all had similar features and price points, so I just went with the most average reviewed and priced one at the time, which happened to be one called “Homca.”

Because it was cheaper than a lot of the other ones, I was worried about it holding up or that it would get a hole easily, but a dozen flights later and it’s still hanging on strong!

I love that it comes in an easy to pack bag and compresses really small, making it super easy to put into our  diaper backpack  that we use for a carry on.

I honestly didn’t know that many airlines do not allow for foot pillows until well after I bought mine.  I have yet to have anyone comment on it though (knock on wood!) and since we always place our toddler in the middle, nobody should have to climb over it since they would be able to use the side aisle seats to exit.

While yes, it is one more “thing” to carry and pack, I’ve always been glad to have it on our long haul flights with our toddler.  It is WAY better than having him try to sleep on us!’

It promises a firm and stable structure – unlike some of the other inflatable travel pillows for kids, this one doesn’t blow up on all sides like a balloon. Our Fly Tot review comes from Celine of Baby Can Travel…

‘We have been using the Fly Tot since 2016 as it was one of the first options available. We like the Fly Tot because we can carry it in our carry on and not have an extra piece of luggage. It comes with a foot pump so it does take up more space in our carry on luggage than we would like, but we can improve this by taking the time to roll it up properly.

For our first flight with the Fly Tot, we had a 3-year-old and a 14-month-old (who was flying as a lap infant), so we used it for both kids, switching on and off. Since that time, we have used it several times for our 2-year-old. We now have one for each of our children who are 5 and 3 years old. We have had great success in getting our kids sleeping for several hours on the flight with the Fly Tot, though getting them to go to sleep can still be an issue. The biggest struggle is getting them to lie down, so we often talk to them about how many movies they will get before they have to try to sleep. I also find that setting up the iPad so that their best viewing position is lying down helps tremendously, especially with our youngest. One thing we know for sure, we are far more successful in getting them to sleep in their own seat with the Fly Tot than across our laps!

We have never had any concerns about the safety aspect of our Fly Tot, since we know how quickly it can be deflated. We have also never had any issues with our carrier allowing them, however, we don’t check in advance and usually only put it in place once the meal has been cleared. In fact, we haven’t even received a comment from the flight attendants about it (good or bad). It seems they don’t even notice we have it set up, though we are certain they do.’

Should i buy a children’s travel pillow to use as a toddler bed for airplane travel.

If my kids were still tiny and we were planning on taking a long haul flight , I’d invest in a couple of inflatable kids’ travel pillows. I think they’re a really useful kids’ travel gadget to own and I wish we’d learned about them before we took the flight to Australia when we came out here. Even if we were just taking the one long haul flight, I’d invest in them and then sell them on later (travel pillows for kids hold their value quite well, so you’d be able to sell them on Marketplace or Gumtree). 

My kids are now 9, 11 and 11 so we’ve missed the boat on getting any use out of these kids’ inflatable travel pillow or plane cushion for toddlers now, unfortunately. However, writing and researching this post has shown me that there are still options of foot hammocks to use as footrests for long haul flights that could make our flights a bit easier. Airplane footrests are available to suit all ages.

Australia is such a long way from the UK – I wish we’d invested in these before we made the move to the other side of the world a few years ago!

This travel pillow provided the perfect amount of neck support and comfort when we took it on a flight, allowing us to get more rest than usual. The plush memory foam filling and asymmetric design can be easily adjusted to support the neck, chin, or head with the taller or shorter sides. Although the memory foam is soft and compressible, it felt more supportive than any other pillow we tried. The materials appear high-quality and luxurious, and it is easy to roll the pillow up to fit inside its compact drawstring sack. We found it a little tricky to roll up at first, but once we nailed the technique, we were impressed with how small it became — ideal for those who don't want a pillow to take up too much luggage space.

It can feel stiff at first and takes some getting used to.

This soft and supportive travel pillow is the perfect accessory for long trips, whether you're in the car or in the air. There's also an adjustable chin strap for added comfort and security — a feature that really sealed the deal for us during testing. The interior of the pillow feels like memory foam, which offers the ideal balance of support and coziness. We also love that the pillow cover is machine washable. Best Infinity-style

Infinity pillow travel pillow.

The modular design of the pillow makes it easy to use to support the neck, chin, or back while sitting.

The cushioning is fairly soft, so the support isn't as stiff as memory foam.

Most travel pillows come in one shape and size, so we love that you can contort this one in various ways to fit your needs. At nearly 40 inches long, the infinity design (yes, like the scarves worn in the early 2000s) can be wrapped once for less support or twice for the type of neck support found in traditional C-shaped pillows. We used the pillow during an all-day road trip and loved that we could wear it around the neck with a looser or tighter fit depending on how much neck support we wanted. We did find that it was still a little too big for us after looping it twice, so users with smaller necks may not get the support they're looking for. That being said, it can be used in many different ways to make sleeping on planes, trains, and cars more comfortable, so minimal support as a traditional neck pillow isn't necessarily a deal-breaker. After three months of use in the real world, this pillow has held up well and shows no signs of wear and tear.

We also found that it's much easier to travel with the pillow since the closed ring shape makes it easy to wear around the neck instead of having to pack it away or risk it falling off. The bamboo fabric is extremely soft and breathable, so we never felt overheated or constricted, and the pillow is machine washable for easy upkeep after a trip. We should also note that it took up a lot of space in our luggage, but it may be worth packing a little lighter to be that much more comfortable while traveling. It also comes in a whopping 10 colors.

Like the black-out curtains of travel pillows, this option comes with a hood and an eye mask that shields your eyes from any light, which is incredibly useful when you're trying to get some shut-eye on a busy flight. It has a soft neck brace that wraps around the neck with light support, and the hood goes on like a regular hoodie with a drop-down eye mask. Once our head was fully cocooned in the hooded pillow, we found that it was a game changer for travelers who have a hard time falling asleep with light or ambient noise around since it muffles sounds and blocks rays. After using it on several flights over the course of three months, we wish the neck area was a little bit wider for comfort, but otherwise love the restful sleep we're able to get on planes when wearing this.

While the space-helmet-like shape looks quite different from other travel pillows on the market, it's still easy to put on and offers excellent portability. Plus, this newer model features an easy way to clip the pillow to a backpack or luggage handle. One thing to note is that the price point is quite high compared to other pillows on the market, but the unique design and high-quality fabric and construction make it worth it for those with higher budgets.

With thick cushioning on one side of the pillow, the unique design of this travel pillow makes it easy to get comfortable in a small space where there isn't much wiggle room. No matter which way your head tilts when you sleep, you can adjust this pillow with the largest part of cushioning rotated to support the side or back of your head, or you can turn it to the front to prevent your chin from tipping forward or bobbing around. After testing the pillow on both road trips and long flights during our three-month testing period, we found that the fabric is breathable and soft for resting your head on, and we love that the cover comes off to toss it in the wash. Because of the thicker side of the pillow, it does take up a bit more space in a backpack, but it does come with a drawstring bag if you prefer to carry it outside of your luggage.

This microbead pillow from Samsonite can be used as a neck pillow if you're sitting upright or you can shift it into a rectangular pillow for leaning against a window or laying on a tray table. The handy two-in-one design already gets bonus points for versatility, but the budget-friendly price makes it all the more better. In testing, it was an effortless process to switch from the U-shape to the rectangle shape by flipping the pillow inside out. Made with polyester and microfiber beads, this pillow is shockingly lightweight and feels nearly weightless to carry around an airport. Because the pillow is on the softer side with the microfiber beads, we discovered it's not as supportive as a memory foam pillow, but it still offered enough support to prevent the neck from uncomfortably craning too far to one side. After three months of use in the real world, we haven't noticed any signs of damage.

Best Splurge

Purple harmony anywhere pillow.

This supportive pillow is comfortable enough to sleep on at night and would make any hotel stay feel more luxurious.

At over three pounds, it's quite heavy but feels weightless if you attach the strap to a backpack.

If you're looking for a travel pillow that is just as comfortable — if not more so — than your pillows at home, then this luxurious one from Purple is the one for you. It's a miniature version of the brand's best-selling Harmony pillow, and it boasts the same cooling gel and bouncy, neck-supporting feel as the larger version. During testing, we found this pillow to be noticeably cooling, breathable, and moisture-wicking, which can come in handy for camping. We wouldn't use this pillow during flights because of the plush, rectangular shape that wouldn't work well when sitting upright, but it would be ideal when you're laying flat, like in a hotel room.

It comes with a machine-washable pillow cover, and there is a travel case sold separately . Because this is one of the priciest pillows on this list, we do wish the travel case was included, but we do think it's worth adding on for its carrying straps and compression features. The pillow feels quite heavy on its own, but when you attach the strap to a backpack, it feels weightless to carry. You can also compress the pillow in half if you have the travel case, making it much more portable. Although this is a splurge for a travel pillow, we think it's worth the investment for travelers in search of a comfortable pillow with luxe features like a breathable honeycomb design, a moisure-wicking cover, and strong neck support. We did notice some light wear on the pillowcase strap after three months of use in the real world, but the pillow itself is holding up great.

Best Breathable

Sleep number travel pillow.

The memory foam filling and synthetic fiber exterior let air pass through for superior breathability.

The pillow is large and was cumbersome to carry, especially for light packers.

It can get hot and stuffy on an airplane, so we love that the synthetic materials used to create this Sleep Number travel pillow are light and airy. The memory foam filling is bouncy and lightweight, and the soft fabric pillowcase is cooling enough to prevent overheating while sleeping in a plane, car, or train. Along with an airplane footrest , it could make a flight more comfortable. We used the pillow on a long-haul flight to Ireland and found it was ideal for leaning your head against the window or on the tray table since the pillow is on the larger side. While the size offers extra cushioning and support like a regular pillow, it did make it slightly annoying to carry through crowded airports since it doesn't come with a compact carrying case. However, it does come with a drawstring bag to carry it separately or you can use the clasp to attach it to backpacks, suitcases, or other luggage. After three months of testing, the pillow shows no signs of wear and tear.

Other Travel Pillows We Liked

Some travel pillows we tested almost made the cut but didn’t due to a few weaknesses, though they still might make suitable options for some travelers.

Cabeau Evolution Classic Travel Neck Pillow : While the memory foam is the perfect balance of firm and soft, we found this pillow to be just a bit too bulky for frequent travel.

Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow : If you’re not a fan of the typical U-shaped travel pillow, this one is a good alternative. But because of its design, it offers no neck support and isn't the most useful when traveling via plane or train.

Slip Jet Setter Travel Pillow : The silk material is luxuriously soft and cooling, but the pillow itself is extremely bulky to wear and difficult to travel with.

Snugl Neck Travel Pillow : Made with soft and supportive memory foam, the pillow is ultra-comfy to use in-flight, but we had a lot of trouble getting it back into the carrying case.

Cushion Lab Travel Deep Sleep Pillow : The comfort level with this pillow is so high that we started using it to sleep on nightly at home. However, it's not very portable, and we had a hard time rolling it up into the case.

Cabeau Evolution Cool Pillow : This is a great pick for travelers who get warm quickly, as the pillow is designed to prevent heat from building up when you wear it. However, we didn't find it as comfortable or supportive as the Cabeau TNE S3 Travel Pillow , so we would recommend that one instead, especially since they retail at similar prices.

Our T+L team tested more than 40 travel pillows to find the very best ones for every type of comfort-seekers. To thoughtfully curate this list, we researched and tested popular options, including pillows with the classic U-shape and rectangular ones, too.

Paying close attention to traits like comfort, quality, durability, and portability, we noted various features that stood out to us for both good and bad reasons. We looked for special features such as cooling designs, firmness, softness, or other claims by the manufacturer to check if they rang true. Our favorite pillows also kept their shape after being tucked away into a case and always sprang back into their original form with no signs of damage. 

After our real-world test, which involved trying the pillows on cross-country road trips and long-haul flights, we brought a few options into our lab to have one team member test them all against each other head-to-head. We then adjusted our results based on the direct comparison, and we will continue to capture testing notes every few months to update our articles accordingly.

Tips for Buying a Travel Pillow

Prioritize neck support.

When it comes to sleeping in planes, trains, or cars, you should focus on your neck and head support. When your head drops during sleep, it can leave you with a sore neck or even a headache. Your travel pillow should be supportive enough that your neck stays securely upright without feeling as though you're being squeezed.

Portability is key 

Whether you pack light or stuff your suitcase full, a compact travel pillow that fits into a small carrying case is ideal for bringing along on trips. Of course, some travel pillows don’t compress, but they should still be easy to clip onto a suitcase or backpack and not bump into too many things if you’re traversing an airport or train station. It's always more convenient when a carrying case is included, especially if it has a luggage trolley sleeve or straps.

Consider the filling material 

Travelers who like a firmer pillow should opt for a memory foam filling that can offer more support than an inflatable alternative. Microbead pillows can be just as supportive as memory foam ones, but they tend to be on the softer side and are more suited to travelers who like a little less structure while sleeping. 

Think about how you plan to use it

Travel pillows are a relatively broad category, so you'll want to narrow down your intended use and travel habits before purchasing since they come in all different shapes, styles, and sizes. For example, if you often find yourself in the middle seat while flying, you'll want a pillow with lots of head support like a memory foam, U-shape pillow or an infinity style that you can adjust. However, window-seaters might opt for a rectangular pillow for leaning against the plane wall.

Travel pillows aren't just for flights, either. There are also rectangular options that can help make you more comfortable while camping or staying in hotel rooms, rental properties, or even friend's houses that might not have great pillows. They are also a road trip essential for every adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can generally find washing instructions on the tag of the travel pillow when you buy it. Removable covers can usually go through a machine wash, but many of our team members opted to air dry the cover to prevent any shrinkage that could happen in a hot dryer. If a pillow doesn’t have a removable cover, you can spot clean the pillow by using a wet cloth dipped in soapy water.

Most standard travel pillows have a semicircular shape that you wrap around the neck to support your neck, head, and chin. These U-shaped pillows often have memory foam or microbead filling, but there are also inflatable neck pillows. There are unique J-shaped travel pillows that are perfect for supporting the neck and head of someone sitting in the middle or aisle seat. In addition, standard pillows make great travel pillows for certain situations, and plenty of rectangular-styled pillows compress down for better portability.

We found it supportive for the neck, chin, and head while sitting in the middle seat on a flight, and it even kept our neck and back pain-free on a long international flight.

The memory foam is incredibly soft and plush, and the design is very accommodating among different-sized people who tested it. This pillow also has an appealing, modern design that looks more refined while wearing it than other options we've seen. One of us, who is already a hot sleeper, did report that the pillow was a little warm on a long international flight, but it wasn't uncomfortable.

What's more, it packs down super small, compressing to 60 percent of its size into an included stuff bag, which makes it easy to stash in your carry-on bag .

The memory foam is stiffer but still feels soft and comfortable to sink into. The sides come up high to provide an excellent chin rest when sleeping. We loved how we could lean back in the car or plane and the back of our neck wasn't against the headrest, which made for a comfortable nap. This neck pillow has a drawstring cord to secure it on any size neck.

The cotton cover is removable and machine washable. The whole pillow folds down small into a carrying case, which has the added feature of a side pocket to hold the included earplugs and eye mask.

Retailing for almost $100 more than our overall winner, there’s no doubt that the Gingerlily Silk Travel Pillow is a splurge. However, it’s made from the finest mulberry silk, giving it an ultra-soft, smooth texture that helps to prevent wrinkles and protect your hair. We used ours on a five-hour Amtrak journey and loved that it kept a blowout looking sleek. The pillow may be expensive, but so is finding a salon on vacation (and there’s no price to be put on wrinkle-free skin!). 

The pillow is also made to last with high-quality materials and stitching. By the time we finished testing, it still looked brand new, and we felt that it would be a long time before it began to flatten. At 12 by 16 inches, this isn’t a full-size pillow, but neither is it the most portable option. This means you’ll need a significant amount of space in your carry-on or purse to tote it around, but on the flip side, being large enough to use for a regular night’s sleep at your destination adds to its overall value. Choose yours in sophisticated navy or pink and ivory stripes.

To determine the best travel pillows, we considered how easy the pillow was to set up and use out of the box, how the material felt to touch, how durable the material was against wear and tear, and how easy it was to clean. We put each pillow through a series of tests on plane, train, bus, or car rides exceeding two hours . During travel, we considered how supportive and comfortable the pillow was, how the fabric felt, how it made our neck feel, how easy it was to pack or compress, and whether it had any exceptional features that made traveling more comfortable.

Here are some of the other travel pillows we tested that fell short of our favorites list.

Trtl Pillow : For the price, this travel pillow didn't provide nearly enough neck support and not only felt flimsy but actually caused us pain during a 3.5-hour flight. Putting the wrap on was incredibly awkward and the fleece felt too stuffy riding in a car.

BCozzy Neck Pillow : This pillow has a unique wraparound design intended to create a double layer of cushion. However, it was too thick during testing to double up comfortably. It was definitely durable and well made, but not comfortable enough to recommend purchasing.

Ostrich Pillow Light Versatile : This pillow has comfortable, T-shirt-like fabric outside and a supportive, memory foam feel when you press on it. But the circular nature of the design just didn't work in testing to support the neck and head in a way that was also comfortable to sleep.

Cabeau Evolution S3 Memory Foam Travel Pillow : This memory foam pillow is supportive and soft, and it features mesh around the neck to keep you cool, as well as suede around the face to keep you cozy. Overall, this pillow is well made, thoughtfully designed, and comfortable enough for us to nap with on an 11-hour flight. It didn't fit into any single best category, but we recommend it nonetheless.

Travelrest Ultimate Travel Pillow : This pillow's main selling point is that it rolls down super small for packability. But outside of that, we found little reason to buy it. It wasn't comfortable to sit or sleep with, caused us neck pain, the material was too plastic-y, and it's overall just confusing to use.

MLVOC Travel Neck Pillow Set : Our testing found this travel pillow too stiff to find a comfortable fit, not providing support to the head and neck, and allowing the head to bob from side to side. It also requires effort to stuff into the travel bag.

Samsonite Microbead 3-in-1 Neck Travel Pillow : This pillow features tiny beads, so it's not stiff like memory foam, but it didn't provide much support during testing unless our head was against a window. There isn't much support on the back of the neck, either. Overall, you can snag something more supportive for the price.

AirComfy Daydreamer Inflatable Neck Travel Pillow : This inflatable travel pillow isn't very comfortable once filled with air and was too small to fit in the crook of our neck comfortably. The surface gets dirty quickly and the plastic material was uncomfortable against the face. In short: Skip.

Everlasting Comfort Memory Foam Travel Pillow : This pillow has a soft, velvety cover and feels very firm with its memory foam core. We thought it might be too firm for some, but personally found it comfortable around the neck or leaning on for a window. For the price, it's well-made and a solid choice.

Dot&Dot Twist Memory Foam Travel Pillow : Filled with memory foam, this pillow has certain joints that twist into different shapes for personalized comfort. We found it to be thick and comfortable, but the bending nature tends to straighten slowly over time, so you'll have to readjust the position regularly.

Hest Pillow : This pillow packs down super small and then unfolds to be filled with shredded memory foam and polyester. Zippered access lets you adjust the loft to what you prefer, and we found it to be super comfortable and plush to sleep on. It's great for car trips and excellent for a full-size pillow versus a neck pillow, but we wish it came with a way to attach to luggage for air travel and that it was a bit lighter.

What to Look For in a Travel Pillow

You can find a comfortable neck pillow for just $20, but depending on your physiology, needs, and preferences, a pillow in the $40 to $60 range might be more comfortable. The price should correlate with design and features: A more expensive pillow should have a more streamlined design and features that make it worth more money due to better comfort, packability, and durability.

Most travel pillows come in one of two styles: Some kind of donut- or C-shaped neck pillow and a rectangular, small pillow that looks like what you use on your bed.

Just wanted to say thank you 🙏 the pillows were a life saver on our trip at Xmas. We traveled karratha - Perth - Doha - Helsinki - Rovaniemi (LAPLAND) then return and used 2 pillows next to each other on 3 different airlines (Qantas, Qatar and Finnair and never had an issue at all. The hosties were all amazing. If anyone is worried they won’t work for older kids my kids were 5 and 8.5 when we travelled and it was still amazing for my eldest to spread out and sleep on. They slept on all of our night flights and said they were so comfy and arrived well rested and ready to explore. My daughter is quite tall for her age at 135 cm as well and she had no issues spreading out and getting a good sleep on the pillow 🙌

We just purchased the self inflating sky bunk and kooshian for my 2 year old and 5 year old. It was so well worth it! Our flights were around 14 hours each, we flew Etihad and it was soooo comfortable for both my kids. I didn’t have to stress about how they were going to be comfortable because there were no empty seats available. Traveling with Babies: How to Fly With A Pack and Play

Whether this is your first time flying with a baby or your tenth, preparing for air travel with your kids is a lot of work and can be stressful. The packing, prep, and travel time can be overwhelming for first-time and experienced parents! From the first time a baby comes home, you need somewhere for them to sleep safely, and as they get older, a spot for them to play without getting into trouble. If you plan on traveling, you will still need these things, which can be particularly difficult when the place you visit isn't exactly baby-proof. A pack n play is a play space, a bassinet, and a diaper changing station, making it the perfect solution. Whether driving or flying, you can fold them up and tuck them away in an easy-to- carry case for travel.

CAN YOU GATE CHECK A PACK-N-PLAY?

When traveling with my three young kids, I purchased small suitcases adorned with their favorite Disney characters, with wheels and a handle for my toddlers. You can also buy a solid color and use fabric markers to decorate and make it unique, so they’ll want to pull it. I bought mine from Amazon for $20, but you can sometimes find them used or even borrow from a friend. The toddler suitcases contained small toys, coloring books, storybooks, and a tablet to help keep the kids entertained during the flight. To make things even easier on everyone, all three kids’ clothes were in one checked bag equals less luggage to wait for after the flight. 

I held my infant in a wrap-style baby carrier to allow for hands-free, ensure that the baby was always near, and help keep the baby calm through the noisy space. The long piece of stretchy fabric was easily adjustable to different body types, which made it great for traveling, especially when visiting family. 

When traveling by airplane, some parents rent baby equipment at their destination. Whether a stroller, crib, car seat, high chair, or pack-n-play, these rentals get pricey - upwards of $25 a day per item. If you plan a little, you can bring your own gear and minimize what you carry through the airport! I always brought a stroller as it provided transportation for kids that get tired, a place to put the small suitcases, a bag of snacks we purchased before the ride, and the diaper bag. At your gate, check in at the desk to receive a tag for gate-checking a stroller. Your stroller will be waiting for you when you land at your destination.

RESTRICTIONS

We always aim to provide our passengers with the maximum levels of safety and comfort on our flights. For this reason and in accordance with international flight regulations, there are some, dangerous materials which we do not allow on board our flights. To ensure a problem-free journey, we recommend that you take care not to bring these items on board.

Water, which does not contain additives and is in a single package in checked baggage, can be transported in vacuum-sealed, leak-proof packages of one (1) liter each, up to a total of five (5) liters. 

Food products [oils (olive oil, etc.), pickled products, sauces, honey, molasses, milk, yogurt, canned products, etc.] may not exceed five (5) liters in total in sealed packages of maximum one (1) liter each.

There is an additional charge for the carriage of weapons on our domestic flights. Passengers who are exempt from weapon carriage fees include the following: VIP passengers on the Rical list and employed guards traveling with these passengers; passengers who have weapons information defined on the public identity card; Holders of a Public Servant Transport License or a Retired Public Servant Transport License; current or retired police officers and TAF members with valid identity cards; and village security guards.

Transporting smart baggage

Smart baggage is the term used for baggage that consists of devices that include integrated lithium batteries that allow for the charging of external devices, and have extra capabilities such as GPS tracking devices, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, self-weighing capabilities and digital locks. Smart baggage whose lithium batteries cannot be detached are not allowed as cabin baggage or checked baggage.

Smart baggage can be allowed as cabin and checked baggage, if the following conditions are met.

Transporting smart baggage in cabin 

The lithium battery has to be detached from the smart baggage, carried as cabin baggage and cannot be reinserted until the destination is reached.

To protect the detached lithium battery from short-circuiting, the battery should be placed in its original packaging, or its terminals should be insulated, or the battery should be placed in secure plastic bags.

Lithium-ion batteries up to 100 Wh can be carried in the cabin and checked baggage, provided they are inside the device. 2 spare batteries with a capacity of 100 Wh-160 Wh. max can only be carried in hand luggage and packaged. They cannot be carried in checked baggage. Batteries with a capacity above 160 Wh are not carried.

Transporting smart baggage as checked baggage 

The lithium battery has to be detached from the smart baggage and carried separately in the cabin.

The above rules do not apply for smart baggage that is powered by lithium button cells.

Portable vehicles that can operate with a lithium-ion battery such as hoverboards, segways, airwheels, solowheels, balance wheels, electric and battery operated bicycles, etc. are prohibited from being carried in the cabin or as checked baggage on flights.

The only element that can pose a danger in carrying drones used for hobby purposes in the cabin is the type and capacity of the battery they contain. There is no problem in carrying battery-containing drones in the cabin within the restrictions regarding electronic devices containing lithium batteries specified in the ICAO Doc.9284 Technical Instructions.

In cases where the batteries of wheelchairs / other mobility devices with liquid batteries need to be removed, the removed battery must be placed in a safe and hard package by the passenger. If the battery is not packaged properly, it will not be loaded onto the aircraft.
