Journey To Discovery
Students learn best when classroom discussion is backed by experience. But that doesn't mean field trips are boring.
Let The Travel Store help create the field trip students will never forget.
Georgia Studies
Performing arts, exhibitions & performances, welcome to the travel store.
Inspiration... Where does it come from and how did it get there?
What is it that inspires us to do what we believe we are meant to do as a profession for the rest of our lives? What is the trigger that alerts our brains to wake up and take notice? Hey! Check this out! It might be something you're actually good at! Is it innate? Inherited? Instilled?
Here's what I know about inspiration. As a teenager, I enjoyed working at my father's drugstore, so I thought I wanted to go into a medical field. That was the plan until I tried something completely different - a summer job at a daycare center.
At that moment, I chose to become a teacher. I have never looked back or wondered if I should have chosen another path. Being in that environment that summer was the inspiration my heart was yearning for.
As a teacher embracing my new role at The Travel Store, I sometimes ask myself, Why do I do this every day? What we do, what we provide isn't on any standardized test, so why help teachers plan field trips? Does anybody really care about field trips?
This is why field trips matter.
Last spring I witnessed twin brothers standing side by side as the waves of the Atlantic Ocean gently washed over their feet for the first time. They stared quietly and motionlessly to somewhere I would never know. There we were, mesmerized by what inspired each of us at that moment. I saw with my own eyes the impact a field trip can have on students, how it can change them forever. Nothing is more inspirational than that.
I wish to take every student to an unforgettable moment like that, a moment where they can truly experience something only imagined, a moment that will inspire them for a lifetime.
Won't you come along with us?
Kathy Freund

Teacher Talk
Our Travel Coordinator (Jim) was amazing. He made sure everything was running smoothly.
Mike and Mary W. were a great team. It is so great how your company handles all the hassle of a field trip. Teachers enjoy field trips when the paperwork, scheduling, etc. is taken off their plates. Thank you for being so great!
Val (Travel Coordinator) was amazing! He made us feel that he truly valued being on the trip with us.
...As usual you guys have been more than accommodating and do a fantastic job for us.

Always know where you passport is, when it is expiring, and keep it up to date. You never want to be caught without your passport when your dream trip is ready for you.
I have never met a destination that I didn't love! As far as all-inclusive destination, I would have to say that Jamaica pulls a little more on my heartstrings. From the music, the food, fabulous beaches, culture, people, adventure experiences and let's not forget those gorgeous new and amazing properties Jamaica has it all for couples, friends and families!
Groups, groups, and more groups! From destination weddings, graduation celebrations, friends gathering together, incentive groups, I love all groups!
Those special once in a lifetime trips; like a beautiful destination wedding, that first family trip with excited children on their first plane ride, the young adults branching out on their own sending them in to the world to explore. Seeing a first is very special.
I love helping and working with people to create memories and experiences they will never forget.

A Christmas Markets River Cruise on the Rhine is another one that stands out. We added a week of hiking and touring pre-cruise in Switzerland, which made for a nice balance of activity and luxurious relaxation.

Cracker Barrel closes Sacramento-area store after 6 years of business: ‘We’re deeply saddened’
Popular American chain Cracker Barrel locked the doors this week to its Sacramento-area site after roughly six years of business.
The site at 1000 Howe Ave. in Arden Arcade, which once dripped with Southern country flair, is now bare and boarded following a Monday closure. A large sign that reads “This location is now closed” is fixed to the building.
A site in Santa Maria has also closed.
“We’re deeply saddened to announce (the Sacramento) location has closed,” Cracker Barrel wrote in a farewell statement to its customers.
“To our Sacramento community — we’ve been honored to welcome guests into a home-away-from-home at our store, and we’ve valued the opportunity to be part of so many special occasions for our guests and community,” the Tennessee-based restaurant chain added.
The site opened in the summer of 2018 with fanfare.
On grand opening day, the line into the restaurant wrapped around the famous front porch, one hungry customer after the other excited to step inside the building for the first time.
In a 2018 interview, Sacramento resident Rosalie Vierra said she cut her vacation short at Yellowstone National Park to be there in memory of her Aunt Myrtle.
“(Aunt Myrtle) was wonderful about taking people on trips ... she liked taking people (to Cracker Barrel) for the first time,” Vierra said as she swayed back and forth in a rocking chair on the restaurant’s patio.
Aunt Myrtle had the right idea.
Cracker Barrel was founded in 1969 after founder Dan Evins wanted to “meet the needs of folks on the road,” according to its website.
“Evins figured maybe folks traveling on the big, new interstate system might appreciate a clean, comfortable, relaxed place to stop in for a good meal and some shopping,” the chain said.
Crack Barrel is probably best known for its front porch, typically adorned with wooden rocking chairs and chess sets.
Inside the restaurant, customers work to solve brain games at the table while they wait for popular entrees like the Old Timer’s Breakfast, Mama’s Pancake Breakfast or Grandma’s Sampler.
A blinking traffic light fixed above the vestibule illuminates the route to the restrooms.
Marketed as a treasure hunt, Cracker Barrel’s Old Country Store is stacked with clothing and accessories, home decor and that “one-of-a-kind gift for someone.”
Why did the Cracker Barrel in Arden Arcade close?
In an emailed statement on Wednesday morning, Cracker Barrel was tight-lipped about the reason behind the closure but hinted at performance issues.
“As a standard course of business, we continually evaluate the performance of our stores, using various criteria to ensure we are meeting the needs of our guests and our business,” the chain said.
“The decision to close a store is never one we take lightly, and our focus right now is on assisting our impacted employees during this transition.”
The company said it offers employees transfers to other locations, severance packages and additional assistance.
“We extend our sincere thanks to our employees who worked so hard to keep our fireplace glowing and to the guests who have dined with us, celebrated with us, and made us part of their community,” the chain said.
Other Cracker Barrel locations
The Cracker Barrel site at 1000 Howe Ave. is permanently closed.
The last standing location in the capital region is at 4630 Sierra College Blvd. in Rocklin, according to the chain’s website.
The other California sites are in Victorville, Bakersfield, Rialto and Camarillo.

In April 2020 — only a month or so into the COVID-19 pandemic — my wife and I were running out of things to do. The novelty of Zoom calls with friends was wearing off. We’d watched lots of movies and TV. We were itching to get out of our apartment, but with the virus still raging, we couldn’t risk being around other people. Then we had an idea: Why not go for a drive?

For our first trip, we drove the length of Little Tujunga Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest. After that, we were hooked. In the ensuing months, we crisscrossed the Santa Monica Mountains and made trips into Los Padres National Forest and beyond.
My wife bought me a California road atlas, and it became part of our scenic drive ritual: We’d consult its pages for inspiration, looking for two-lane roads and state highways that squiggled through mountain ranges or meandered through deserts. After returning home, I’d highlight our route. Four years after our first drive, the atlas is full of highlights documenting our travels — and there’s still a lifetime’s worth of backroads we haven’t covered yet.
No matter where we go, each drive gives me a deeper appreciation for the incredible range of landscapes in Southern California. And these journeys have led to many rewarding discoveries, from out-of-the-way diners to new trailheads for hiking and biking.
If you’re tired of visiting the same places, it’s time to hit the road. These two trips — all within a three-hour drive of the city — will get you started.
Los Padres National Forest and Carrizo Plain National Monument This route traverses winding mountain roads through Los Padres and spits you out near the southern entrance to Carrizo Plain — a vast preserve of native grassland and a hotspot for wildflowers (at least on some years ) and birdwatching . From Interstate 5, take Exit 205 and head west on Frazier Mountain Park Road. This two-lane road changes names several times as it ascends into the San Emigdio Mountains, passing forested slopes and epic canyon views along the way.
After about 42 miles, you’ll meet California 166. Take a right here and then a left on Soda Lake Road to enter Carrizo Plain National Monument. Drive northwest for 35 miles to the parking lot for the Soda Lake Trail, a short boardwalk that gets you up close to the park’s salt-crusted lake. If you plan ahead, you can also book a guided tour of Painted Rock, a sandstone outcrop with Native American rock art.
Hungry? Head back the way you came, take a right on California 166, and drive west 15 miles to the Cuyama Buckhorn , a renovated ’50s motel, restaurant and bar. The eatery’s Santa Maria-style tri-tip is superb, and if you grab a room, you can turn this scenic drive into a full weekend escape .
Volcan Mountain and Julian This route will take you to Julian , a mountain town famous for its apple orchards and delicious pies. From Interstate 15, take Exit 58 for California 79. Take a right on Pechanga Parkway and head south. The road becomes Pala Temecula Road and emerges into a wide canyon with mountains towering on either side. Take a left at Pala Mission Road and continue east on California 76, which hugs the San Luis Rey River before ascending more than 1,000 feet up a chaparral-covered ridgeline.
After some hairpin turns, the road levels off and skirts Lake Henshaw, a picturesque reservoir. Take a right on California 79, and after 10 miles, take a left on Wynola Road. Follow that road for about 3.5 miles, then take a left on Farmer Road to arrive at Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve. Stretch your legs on the Five Oaks Trail , a 1.2-mile path that ascends the western flank of Volcan Mountain and offers sweeping views of the orchards below.
With your appetite revved up, head south on Farmer Road into Julian and make a stop at the Julian Pie Co . Grab a well-deserved slice of apple pie and some apple cider and rest your feet at a picnic table while you chow down.
3 things to do
1. Race plankton in Manhattan Beach In celebration of Earth Day, the Roundhouse Aquarium will hold a day full of educational activities inside and outside its facilities. Highlights include dolphin spotting, a fish feeding, crafts, games, a “shark shack” and, yes, plankton racing. The festivities kick off at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and go until 4 p.m. The event is free, but be sure to register ahead of time at roundhouseaquarium.org .
2. Go gardening in San Pedro Give back to the land by planting native species, removing weeds, mulching and watering the White Point Nature Preserve’s garden with the folks at Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. You’ll also have the chance to enter a raffle and take a guided nature walk. As a bonus, refreshments will be provided by Starbucks to keep you cool and hydrated. The three-hour event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday. All volunteers under age 16 should be accompanied by an adult, and all volunteers under age 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver at the event. Register at pvplc.com .
3. Stretch your legs on Venice Boulevard CicLAvia is back. And this time it’s shutting down a 5.75-mile stretch of Venice Boulevard that connects Palms, Mar Vista and Venice Beach for walkers, joggers, bikers, roller skaters, unicyclers, penny-farthings, pogo sticks — anything as long as it’s completely powered by humans. There will be three local hubs along the route where you’ll be able to partake in family-friendly activities, pump air into your bike’s tires, refill your water bottle and use the restroom. Be sure to reference CicLAvia’s digital map so you can scope out the local businesses you’d like to visit along the way. It all takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. For more information about the event and the area it covers, visit ciclavia.org .
The must-read
The Klamath River in Northern California has turned brown and muddy, but that’s a good thing. As Times writer Ian James reports , it’s a side effect of the largest dam removal project in history, which aims to restore the river to its natural state. Four dams are being removed along the Klamath, and the river is passing freely through tunnels in three of them, draining reservoirs and churning up an estimated 2.3 million tons of sediment that had settled along the bottom of those man-made lakes. Although the turbid water might look ugly, restoration advocates and tribal leaders see it as a sign of healing. The muck is passing out of the Klamath, and new life — everything from salmon heading upstream to native plant seedlings along the riverbanks — will soon take its place.
Happy adventuring,
Want to try birding but don’t have binoculars? Head to the Audubon Center in Ernest E. Debs Regional Park. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, and you can borrow a free pair of binoculars (as well as a birding guide, backpack and other gear) to help you spot the 140 species of birds that call the park home.

For anyone feeling a sudden urge for summer wanderlust, Google unveiled its top 20 destinations that travelers have already taken an interest in for any upcoming warm weather getaways.
From domestic to international locations, Google shared insights based on past flight booking data and search trends with "Good Morning America" to help people start planning summer vacation spots or shape an ideal itinerary.
Much like snubs and surprises during awards season, there are a couple of places that fell out of favor since last year as well as some new additions that made this year's list.
Check out all the spots below.
Top summer 2024 destinations on Google flights
The search engine technology company said the list reflects people in the U.S. searching on Google Flights for travel anytime between June 1 through August 31, 2024.
Cancun, which previously came in at number one during summer, dropped to number six, while Tokyo is on the rise, with Madrid and San Juan new to the summer location lineup.

The biggest change from 2023, according to Google, is that Cancun moved down from the number two spot to number six, while Tokyo rose from number eight to number three.
Newcomers to the top destinations list include San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Madrid, Spain. Chicago and San Francisco didn't make the top 20 this year.
Travel trends on Google search
Google gathers insights from mid-January to mid-March from U.S. users to find out what travel-related queries are top of mind ahead of summer.
Searches for "travel itinerary" and "solo travel" reached an all-time high in January.
Two of the top trending "weekend getaway" destinations are Palm Springs and Florida Keys.
The top trending "romantic getaway" destinations were Napa, the famed California wine country, and Key West, home to the southernmost point in the Continental U.S. with historic landmarks.
Finally, La Romana and Saint John were the top trending destinations searched with all-inclusive resorts.

Meta working on travel mode for using Quest headsets during flights after Vision Pro launches with feature
Today I learned two things. First, apparently Meta Quest headsets don’t work on planes? I guess Apple knew to prioritize that feature for Vision Pro. And second, support is reportedly on the way. Add this to the list of ways competition from Vision Pro is making Meta Quest 3 a better product.
For April, Meta released software update v64 that makes Quest 3 passthrough more like Vision Pro, users say. Motion blur is more noticeable, but still clarity is increased. Meta has also added support for viewing spatial videos captured from iPhone 15 Pro.
Now Meta may be planning to introduce flight support as soon as v65 next month. Per @Lunayian on X ( via Nicholas Sutrich ), several code strings reference travel mode for use on a plane.

Apple pushes watching movies and TV shows during flights as a key use case for Apple Vision Pro. It’s one of the first things you see at the top of Apple’s website currently.
Surely Meta has taken notice and prioritized travel mode as it positions Meta Quest 3 as a dramatically cheaper solution to Vision Pro with many of the same capabilities.
The most impactful change, however, would be around multitasking. Quest headsets are limited to three app windows at a time right now. Apple Vision Pro has plenty of other limitations, but there’s virtually no limit to how many windows can be placed around a room and used together.
- Zuckerberg says Meta Quest 3 is better than Apple Vision Pro
- Apple Vision Pro is already making the Meta Quest 3 better
- Vision Pro latency by far the best on passthrough; lags behind Meta on angular motion
- Meta confirms spatial video playback coming to Quest one day before Vision Pro launch
