Italy Tour Packages

It’s easy to fall in love with Italy. After all, the country is the birthplace of the Renaissance. And pizza. With its historic sites, iconic art and scenic beaches, Italy offers something for everyone.

Discover the enduring charm of Rome, rightly called the Eternal City, as you take in the grandeur of its striking monuments including the Colosseum and the Pantheon. Surround yourself with art at the spectacular Vatican Museums and galleries where Egyptian mummies share space with the masterpieces of Raphael and Carravagio. In Florence, you can’t miss the terracotta-domed cathedral, Duomo di Firenze, and Michelangelo’s intricate sculpture of David.

Experience art of a different kind in the sprawling vineyards and olive groves of Tuscany. Elsewhere in the culinary capital of Bologna in northern Italy, find solace in a warm and hearty tagliatelle al ragu (or Pasta Bolognese) topped with generous shavings of Parmigiano Reggiano. Savor sumptuous seafood and limoncello in the picturesque town of Sorrento perched atop craggy cliffs dropping into the Mediterranean Sea.

When you travel to Italy with YMT Vacations, you will have access to safe, fully guided tours and a wide range of activities with varying fitness level requirements. Most importantly, our group tours give you the opportunity to interact and see the world with like-minded travelers, setting the tone for lifelong friendships. Whether you want to spend more time marveling at Michelangelo’s frescoes at the Sistine Chapel, or soak up the sun for a little longer as you stroll down quaint seaside towns along the Amalfi Coast, our affordable tours let you explore Italy at your own pace.

More information about Italy

Travel to  Italy  to experience the  vita all Italiana , or ‘Italian life’ with its rich artistic heritage, vibrant culture and delicious national cuisine. As home to some of western civilisation’s most admired works of art and architecture, a trip to Italy is sure to ignite your senses and stir your soul.

Italy  is situated in  southern Europe  and shares land borders with  France, Switzerland, Austria  and  Slovenia . Its boot-shaped mainland is instantly recognisable, but there are also several islands within the territory of  Italy , such as  Sicily, Sardinia, Ischia  and  Capri . A package trip to  Italy  is sure to be a cultural awakening as the country is home to more  UNESCO World Heritage  sites than any other country on earth, with a staggering total of  55,  and counting! From the  Colosseum of Rome  to the ashes of  Pompeii  in  Naples , Italy’s historic sights are just one part of its attraction as a travel destination.

Italy  is known for its food-obsessed national culture. Every meal is an extravaganza of mouth-watering flavours and a passionate cooking heritage. From Neapolitan  pizza  to creamy  gelato  and the divine simplicity of the best  pasta  dishes on earth, travelling to  Italy  is a pilgrimage for foodies.

Once you’ve strolled through the eternal streets of  Rome , checked out stylish  Milian , seen the  Renaissance  masterpieces of  Florence  and got in touch with your inner romantic in  Venice , Italy’s gorgeous natural landscapes tempt you to explore further. As well as an array of sun-drenched beaches and rustic coastal villages, you’ll also find snow-capped mountains, turquoise grottoes and glistening freshwater lakes. There’s so much more to  Italy  than its most famous cities, so let a  tour of Italy  reveal the charms of this beautiful country or  bel paese  as the locals say!

History of Italy

The country’s rich history is a huge attraction for those planning a  vacation to Italy . With such a vibrant heritage influenced by civilisations such as the  Phonecians, Greek, Romans  and  Byzantines , it’s little wonder that  Italy  is sometimes called the ‘ Cradle of Civilization ’. The  Colosseum  and  Pantheon  in  Rome  or the  Temple of Valleys  in  Sicily  are just a few of the relics of Italy’s vast history.

Of course, the most famous period in Italian history is the  Renaissance  of the  14th-century,  credited with propelling western Europe into modernity. This marked a rebirth of ancient arts, language, philosophy, politics and literature and was a period that gave rise to the genius of great Italian’s such as  Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo, Michelangelo, Titian  and  Copernicus.  Even today, a  trip to Italy  is incomplete without contemplating the visual storytelling of  Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel  in Rome or viewing  Da Vinci’s  legendary  Last Supper  in  Milan.

Three distinct periods can be seen as the defining moments in Italy’s vast and complex history. First was the  Roman Empire , with Rome as the center of power and influence over a vast, continent-spanning empire. The  Renaissance , which flourished between the  14th and 17th-centuries  marked another pivotal time in Italian history and shaped the nation as one of great artistic and cultural innovation. Lastly, the  Reunification  or  Risorgimento  of the late 1800s saw the coming together of Italy’s kingdoms, culminating in the unified  Kingdom of Italy  in  1871 , with Rome as its capital.

The  20th-century  in Italy saw the rise of far-right politics and  Mussolini’s fascist party . Finally, the  Republic of Italy  came into existence in  1946.

Nature in Italy

Italy  is home to a range of spectacular landscapes, from the snowy peaks of  Mont Blanc  in the  Alps , the highest point in  western Europe , to the glistening turquoise waters of the  Adriatic coast . From  Sicily  to  Sardinia  and  Tuscany  to  Calabria,  an  organized tour of Italy  is the best way to experience the grandeur of its remarkable natural landscapes.

Italy’s freshwater lakes, such as glacial  Lake Maggiore , stylish  Lake Como  and breathtaking  Lake Garda  are some of the most popular vacation destinations to visit in Italy. On the other hand, for a more rustic getaway  Tuscany ’s rolling countryside, characterised by the gorgeous  Val d’Orcia,  is a sight to behold. Vibrant hills of green and gold and patchwork vineyards dotted with characterful farmhouses are popular settings for  agriturismo  vacations. Whilst exploring the region of  Tuscany , visitors can make a stop a the  Saturnia Thermal Baths , a beautiful natural hot spring with therapeutic properties, just one of the many natural wonders of this blessed region.

On the island of  Sicily  you’ll find natural attractions as captivating as the  Scala dei Turch i, a sparkling white marl cliff face, shaped by centuries of natural wind and sea erosion, and towering  Mount Etna,  Italy’s most active volcano. Another island delight is the  Blue Grotto of Capri,  on the island of the same name. This must-see natural wonder is a sea cave, filled with bright-blue water, a unique result of light refraction.

Boasting generally warm, sunny summers and mild winters, if you  travel to Italy  you’ll surely be blown away by the diversity and natural beauty of its landscapes.

Culture in Italy

All who  travel to Italy  are captivated by its vibrant national culture. Said to be the birthplace of Western civilisation, this cultural powerhouse is sure to amaze you with its arts, cuisine, music and customs.

Aside from the brilliant art, literature and philosophy of the Italian Renaissance, Italian culture has the family unit at its heart. Family gatherings are frequent and encompass the entire extended family circle, not just the nuclear family. Of course, food is sure to be part of these traditional family gatherings.

More than just a source of nourishment, food is a pillar of the national identity and a source of passion, creativity and joy in  Italy.  Italian food is revered throughout the world, and if you  travel to Italy,  you’ll find that each region has its own subtle style of  ‘Italian cuisine ’. Wine is another great passion in Italy, which is home to some of the most famous  vineyards  in the world. An Italian meal is almost always accompanied by good wine.

When it comes to religion, the  Roman Catholic  faith is the most important in Italy, and the country is famously home to the  Vatican City , the residence of the Pope. Many Italians identify with Roman Catholicism to some degree and most of the national vacations and festivals are connected with Christianity.

Lastly, aside from food, art and religion, one of Italy’s most famous exports is its style. Italian fashion houses such as  Prada, Armani  and  Versace  are credited with creating some of the most sought clothing designs in the world.

A  vacation to Italy  is sure to be an unforgettable experience, filled with mouth-watering cuisine, legendary landmarks and plenty of beautiful  Mediterranean  sunshine.

Italy FAQ's

From the Roman Empire to the Renaissance, Italy is famous for its huge contributions to the worlds of art, architecture, fashion, opera, literature, design, and film – the list goes on, and we haven`t even mentioned the food yet. The country has more UNESCO World Heritage cultural sites than any other country in the world. Artistic masterpieces, medieval hill towns, majestic mountains, Mediterranean beaches, bustling markets and mouth-watering cuisine - Italy really is a country that has it all, and that's why it is one of the most-traveled destinations in Europe.

There are so many highlights in this gorgeous country - from the canals of Venice to the museums of Florence and the surrounding countryside of Tuscany and its Hill Towns to the cobblestone streets of Rome to the cliffs of Positano … and beyond. Rome is one of the most iconic and most traveled cities in Europe and you could spend days getting lost in this amazing destination. The most picturesque spots in Italy might just be Cinque Terre and all the stops along the Amalfi Coast . Positano is the gem of the Amalfi Coast and is arguably the most beautiful and most charming town in the whole of Italy.

Like all popular European destinations, Italy sees visitors throughout the year - rain, snow or shine. And all of these are a possibility depending on when you visit Italy. Every season in this country has its charm, as well as its drawbacks, so when to go depends on your travel type and what activities you are interested in. Generally speaking, the best times to visit are during the `shoulder seasons` which is spring (April to June) or fall (September and October) when there are fewer tourists, lower prices, and moderate temperatures. The summer months bring an influx of tourists and increases in hotel rates, and higher temperatures. The winter months are often grey, wet, and cold in the north but temperate south of Rome. Here is an overview of Italy in all four seasons that will help you decide what`s the best time of year for you to visit. For more information, check out: Best Time to Visit Italy

We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.

Whatever your pleasure, transportation in Italy is modern, easy to navigate and fits a variety of budget ranges. By Car: If it's the open road you're after, renting a car is the best way to travel in Italy. All the typical car rental companies are available at the major airports. Specify automatic or manual transmission, as car transportation in Italy (and Europe, for that matter) is usually manual. On the small, winding country roads, manners usually win out, and major highways span the country to help ease access to the major cities. For more information on getting around by car, check out: Driving in Italy By Train: Train travel in Italy is an excellent way to take the stress out of planning routes. Though you can't get to the smallest towns by train, the medium-sized and, of course, the major stops are on train routes.

The currency of Italy is the Euro. US dollars are not accepted. Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand or be prepared to exchange your dollars for euros upon arrival. Currency exchange desks can be found at the airport and many locations throughout the city. For more detailed information, consult our guide by clicking here Tipping in Italy .

English may be spoken at your hotel and in the tourist areas, but not everywhere. We suggest you get a good English-Italian guidebook and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as hello, goodbye, excuse me and numbers 1-10.

See Michelangelo's frescoed ceiling in the Sistine Chapel

One of the most important structures of the Catholic faith, the Vatican City’s Sistine Chapel is a must-see on a tour of Italy. Though the chapel walls have witnessed centuries of worship, it’s the renaissance ceiling paintings of Michelangelo that will leave you in awe.

Visit the glamorous Isle of Capri

Cruise your way through Venice

The charm found in the canals of Venice is nothing short of irresistible. Admire gothic palaces and postcard bridges whilst adrift in a gondola, gaining an understanding of life in a city that floats. Exploring a city by foot will never be the same after a trip to Venice.

Journey to the well-preserved ruins of Pompeii

An unfathomable history lesson is found in the archaeological ruins of Pompeii. Buried and preserved by the ash of a volcano eruption in the year 79, in this Italian town you will discover the progressive life of early Roman times as you walk within the parameters of an open-air time capsule of life on Earth.

Go shopping in Italy's fashion capital Milan

Armani, Gucci, Prada and Versace. These are some of the prestigious fashion brands that call the Italian city of Milan home. In between yearning through boutiques and department stores, stop to sample the city’s delicacies like breaded veal cutlet and ossobuco.

Our top 5 things to do in Italy

It's the moments of quiet stillness that take your breath away on a Trafalgar tour through Italy. Sitting in the calm halls of the Vatican. Floating on the canals of Venice. Standing beside the ruins of Pompeii.

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters are found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo dress Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River will show you the building’s architectural brilliance.

Vatican Museums

Best museums in Italy

The epicenter of the Catholic faith and the birthplace of art’s most renowned masters. Our guided tours of Italy will take you to the many museums found here, whether in the Sistine Chapel, by the canals of Venice or in the grand galleries of Tuscany.

The authentic carbonara experience will take place in Rome, covered in salty Pecorino Romano cheese. A simple dish inspiring heart-warming meal times, this pasta will connect you with Italy’s rich culinary customs - an impressive evolution from its supposed heritage as a coal-miner’s meal.

Pollo alla Cacciatora

Literally translating to ‘hunter’ in Italian, cacciatore offers an appreciation for Italy’s meals of days gone by. Typically a preparation of rabbit or chicken, it’s the simmering tomato stew that makes this dish so mouthwatering. Satisfy a genuine hunger and consume with hand-ripped bread.

Italy tours are best served with an oversized slice of tiramisu. Cementing this country's obsession with espresso, this cake of layered biscuits soaked in coffee is the perfect after hours pick-me-up before an evening stroll through the charming streets.

Best food in Italy

A date with Italian food will likely start and end with a slice of pizza. But it’s the menu items that we share with you in between that will take your appreciation to new heights; think cacciatore and Carbonara with a slice of tiramisu in between.

What to pack for Italy

People packing for a tour

A classic linen outfit

The Italians are famous for their equal parts glamorous and effortless dress sense. Look the part with a few ensembles featuring classic linens in navy and white.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Italy, you might find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to remember the traditional Italian recipes you learn.

With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about Italian history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A small blanket

When exploring the soul-stirring setting of Tuscany, a picnic may call. Come prepared with a small blanket to cover in wine and cheese.

Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes

A classic memoir that brought the romance of Tuscany to the world, there’s no better time to read this book than when venturing through the country yourself.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and reusable toiletry bottles.

More about italy.

As a treasure trove of artistic and historical wonders, Italy offers timeless beauty and cultural richness. In the central Tuscany region, the streets of Florence are filled with Renaissance architecture, with a skyline dominated by the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, a Gothic art masterpiece. Within the northern Lombardy region, the fashion mecca, Milan, offers an abundance of art galleries and museums, with the most sought-after sight being The Last Supper, a mural painting by Leonardo da Vinci. Bordering the Tyrrhenian Sea in the central Lazio region, Rome is home to the ancient Colosseum, an amphitheater that played host to gladiatorial games, and the Pantheon, a former Roman temple. Perched atop cliffs that overlook the Bay of Naples in the southwestern Campania region, the coastal town of Sorrento is known for its lemon groves, notably some of the best lemons in Italy, they are used to produce the splendor that is Limoncello, a lemon-flavored Italian liqueur. Take a gondola ride through the romantic canals of Venice to explore one of the most unique cities in the world, built on more than 100 islands in the northeastern Veneto region. Savor the sweet symphony of Italy's gastronomic legacy and culinary mastery that spans centuries, with authentic Italian gelato, pasta, and pizza.

Additional details

  • Are there Italy tour packages that include airfare ? The short answer to this is: not many. Because of how widely airfare can vary depending on your departure dates and where you leave from, it is unlikely that your airfare will be included (unless you are requesting a custom tour). However, one of the benefits of Stride is that you can compare the trips that do! Our search feature allows you to easily view the Italian Tours & Trips that include airfare .
  • What kinds of accommodation exist in Italy? This largely depends on the style of tour you are taking, and what level of luxury it is. If you are taking an active, budget-friendly tour, you may be staying in low end hotels, or some of the country’s hostels (hostels in Italy -- as in much of Europe -- are a safe and popular way to travel). Higher-end tours may stay in cute, local inns or various hotels.
  • Is food included on Italy group tours? Food is one of the best aspects of traveling to Italy, so it makes sense to wonder if you will have a say in what you eat! The answer to this question depend on the tour, though the majority of tours will have a couple scheduled meals, like maybe having a group breakfast at the hotel on the first day of your trip, and let you decide on others. If food is your main concern, perhaps consider going on a culinary tour of Italy .
  • Where should I exchange money in Italy? We recommend that you exchange money ahead of time if you can at all. However, there will be multiple opportunities to use your credit or debit cards within the country, just make sure you are using a card with low or no international fees! Also, as you should contact you bank before you travel abroad, so they don’t see your international spending as suspicious activity and cancel your account.
  • What is the weather like in Northern Italy? The climate in Northern Italy varies depending on where you travel precisely, and what time of year. In the Alps, the wintertime can be very cold with a lot of snow. Summer in the mountains is mild, reaching a maximum of 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and but getting a little chilly at night. It also can be quite rainy during the summer, so pack a rain jacket! The coast of Northern Italy is quite a bit warmer than the Alps, and has mild winters and its known for its hot, dry summers.
  • What is the weather like in Southern Italy? The climate in Southern Italy is known for its mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. In the summer, temperatures are on average around 80 degrees. In the winter, make sure to pack a rain jacket, but don’t worry about the snow -- in Southern Italy, this only rarely accumulates on the tops of the Apennine Mountains.
  • How do I prevent thieves and pickpockets in Italy? Boasting some of the most famous and popular tourist destinations in the world, it makes sense that Italy is also known for its pickpockets. While these do not present any real safety issues, it can be extremely frustrating and upsetting to lose your passport, money, or any jewelry that you have. The best defense you have against pickpockets is to be aware, especially when you are in a major tourist area, whether that be an attraction or the airport. Try to carry only a day’s worth of money on you at a time, and keep it in fanny pack (or money belt), or in the inside pocket of a jacket. If you do carry a bag, do not leave it on the back of your chair or put it on the ground when eating at a restaurant. Do not discount anyone of being a thief -- pickpockets can be children, well dressed individuals, or even a woman holding a crying baby. Be especially on alert if you are approached by a group of people, or someone carrying a sign at chest level.
  • Is public transportation safe? Yes, using the bus and train systems in Italy is safe for tourists to use. Just exercise caution as you would in any other context -- be careful when traveling alone at night, for example.

Italy Vacations

Italy: where opulence meets exceptional cities, art, food, wine, and culture..

The shores of Lake Garda, the largest of the Italian lakes, are dotted with magnificent castles and delightful villas

Handcrafted journeys to our most popular places in Italy.

Duomo di Milano church in the early morning before sunrise

A country dripping in Renaissance and Medici extravagance.

Italy has remained an enduring European destination for very good reason; this singular boot shaped country embodies the best of what Europe can offer. Somehow simple pleasures take on larger proportions in this dreamy land, where the language, the food, the history, and the culture revolve around beauty, pleasure and romance. From the canals in Venice to the clear waters of Lake Como, it is no wonder a million euros a year are thrown into Rome’s Trevi Fountain by visitors; they wish to return.

The Culture

Vineyards bake in the sun by Mount Vesuvius and street pizza in Naples tastes like a slice of heaven. Shopping in Milan’s boutiques will make fashionistas swoon. Foodies may have trouble eating Italian anywhere else ever again after tasting the gastronomic majesty of Emilia-Romagna’s cuisine. Sip bitter, orange Aperol Spritz in at a café in fair Verona or Medieval Siena and watch the sun melt over the Piazza del Campo, the symbol of Tuscany.

The beauty of these experiences is that Italians are as enamoured with their culture and heritage as any visitor will be. This pride of place is reflected in their attention to detail in their own daily lives. Predominantly Roman Catholic, hundreds of thousands of beautiful churches have been built in Italy over the centuries. Home to the centre of Catholicism, Vatican City, the world’s smallest sovereign state, continues to house the current Pope within its walls. Inside more than 100 galleries are maintained, making it the largest and most affluent museum complex on the planet.

Soccer may be the other primary religion of the country, with bars and coffee shops packed with locals cheering for their team on game days. Succumb to the Italian way and cheer for instant amici .

What is the visiting etiquette in Italy?

Italians tend to be relaxed and warm visiting with acquaintances, friends, and family. When meeting someone new, it is appropriate to greet them with  buongiorno or  buonasera , firm handshake, eye contact, and a smile. The gesture of a kiss on each cheek, or hugs are commonplace for friends and family. Use of the versatile word  ciao , which can mean both hello and goodbye, is a common greeting between friends.

If invited to someone’s home, it is customary to bring a small gift, such as flowers or chocolates. Pay attention to your attire, as it is a sign of respect for your host to dress neatly. No hats indoors, and save the casual beach clothing for the sea! A home cooked Italian meal is often times a lengthy affair, with lively conversation and slow eating. It's common for the meal to start with everyone declaring  buon appetito , loosely meaning to enjoy your meal. Express appreciation for your host's culinary skills, Italians often enjoy talking about food and their cooking.

What is Italy best known for?

Italians have grown up looking at art and history; it is infused into their communities. Historically, there was a time when art production required massive expenditures of money and time. The social and economic elite of Italy invested in the arts as a part of their civic duties, as proclamations of faith, and as proof of their virtue. Today, travellers admire some of the world’s most distinctive artworks in Italian museums, which work to exhibit and preserve extensive collections created over thousands of years.

Italy is home to fashion empires, and remarkable footwear and accessory manufacturers who continue to don  Made in Italy  labels, synonymous with quality. It is unlikely you will find an Italian donning sweats to go to the grocery store; fashion is important. Even outside of the fashion centres of Milan and Rome, Italians take time to dress as a way of personal artistic expression. There is a level of care and composure in knowing what to wear, and how to style it that is inherently Italian. It is no wonder the likes of Enzo Ferrari and Gianna Versace were born of this country where Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli had crafted their creative genius centuries before.

What are some Italian traditions?

The  dolce vita , or sweet life, that Italy is known for, is sought after by travellers looking to indulge in the small pleasures of life. This extends to family, which is at the heart of Italy. The importance of family has shaped Italy’s culture, as they rely on one another to celebrate joys and face challenges. Families providing gracious hospitality, such as enjoying long meals, is second nature to Italians.

Carnivals tracing back to the Middle Ages are celebrated across Italy, with the most attended one being in Venice . According to the tale, after a military victory in 1162, the people of Venice started to gather and dance in St. Mark’s Square. Today the event includes opulent costumes, colourful parades, and people donning elaborately decorated masks portraying satirical appearances. Masquerade balls during Carnival continue to be a draw for travellers to Venice.

The most traditionally celebrated national holidays include Christmas, Easter and New Year’s. On New Year's Eve, opening a bottle of bubbly to get the big pop, called  botto in Italian, is a tradition to scare away evil spirits and encourage prosperous new beginnings. The following morning, Italians say leaving the house with a pocket full of cash will ensure financial prosperity throughout the year!

What are Italians like socially?

For Italians, spending time with family is at the centre of society. Extended family members often live nearby to one another, and multigenerational homes are also common. Priority is given to any chance to gather and socialize with loved ones for meals and celebrations.

Italians are known for their expressive communication. Non verbal cues, including body language and facial expressions are important, so be sure to smile to convey kindness. Don’t be surprised to see Italians speaking with their hands, including the  tulip hand gesture toward a person during conversation, as if to emphasize being critical or interrogative. When chatting with an Italian, asking polite questions about their family is often warmly welcomed.

What language do Italians speak?

The official language of Italy is Italian, while English is the second most common language. English is spoken by about 15% of the country, along with French and German commonly used in the northern regions. When visiting Italy, it may be helpful to learn some Italian phrases, such as  ciao (hello) and politely asking someone if they  parli inglese ? (do you speak English?). Italians are commonly gracious and accustomed to interacting with English-speaking travellers, and will often attempt to use some English words or gestures to communicate.

The Best Time to Visit

Most guidebooks tell travellers Italy is best visited in the early fall and late spring, when the European schools are back on, it’s not as busy with visitors, and the temperatures are most comfortable.  In reality, the best time to visit Italy is anytime. Winters in the mountain of the Dolomites at Cortina can feel like a fashion show on and off the slopes, or get cozy at Alta Badia, where post ski dinners of pillow soft gnocchi have earned the elegant ski town two Michelin star restaurants. With about 4,000 museums and art galleries across the country, a chilly winter wind is easily subdued once inside thick walls housing some of the world’s most cherished art. Fall brings the harvest and like any wine-centred country, the vineyards are laden with swollen grapes and walks or bike rides in Tuscany or Sicily feel like spending time in a painting.

The Venice Biennale takes place at the beginning of the spring and ends in November. A spectacle of art and architecture where artists from all over the world showcase their talents at this pavilion complex, walking distance from San Marco. Summers by the coast or on the islands are busy, but the waters are at their warmest along the  Amalfi Coast or the Italian Riviera. In the summer try to avoid the crowds by heading out early morning and later in the evening. Mid-day naps by the sea, your villa’s pool, or in a decadent hotel room with a view, suits all seasons in Italy.  Afterall, restaurants are open late here and dining after 8pm is the norm. In Italy, life is for pleasure, in all seasons.

When is Italy’s peak tourist season?

Crowds are heaviest during Italy’s peak travel months of June to August, however in some cities the hot temperatures can make some sightseeing less desirable. More pleasant temperatures, with slightly less crowds can be found in Italy’s shoulder seasons of May to June and September to October. National Italian holidays including Easter tend to see heavy crowds in Rome, Venice and Florence.

Which is the most affordable time to visit Italy?

Affordable airfare to Italy can be found nearly year round, with accommodation rates being lowest during the months of November-April. The very lowest pricing for hotels can be found in February and November, both of which experience cooler temperatures. That said, if you pack appropriately there is so much to see indoors with the endless list of exquisite museums and cathedrals!

How long should I plan to visit Italy?

Italy is a large country North to South, so if you are hoping to see as much as possible, plan to spend two weeks visiting. You will be able to check out all the highlights from Milan in the north to the Amalfi Coast in the south. If your time is limited, plan to spend 7-10 days, with a focus on two to three highlight destinations, such as  Rome , Florence, and Venice.

When is the ideal time to visit Italy?

Italy’s favourable location makes it a desirable vacation destination year round. June, July, and August are Italy’s peak travel months, but often have less desirable hot temperatures. Shoulder months including April, May, September, and October are commonly less busy, though you can still relish in pleasant warm weather. Consider visiting in the winter months, when reasonably mild weather makes touring less crowded attractions and historic sites very enjoyable.

Things to Know

How much does a trip to italy cost.

Typically, for a one-week vacation to Italy, an individual traveller should budget between $2,000-$3,000, not including international airfare. The cost of travelling to Italy can vary depending on the time of year, style of trip, duration, destinations, and level of accommodation, though Italy is known for being able to accommodate budgets of all sizes.

How to plan a trip to Italy?

The best way to explore Italy is on a tailor-made vacation catering to your individual interests. Do you want to count the arches in Rome at the Colosseum, or be serenaded down the peaceful canals of Venice? Everyone has their own style of travel. Discover tailor-made travel in Italy with the help of a  Goway Destination Specialist .

What is required to visit Italy?

All visitors from Canada and the United States require a passport, with a recommended six-month validity, to visit Italy for up to 90 days. Travellers will go through passport control when arriving in Italy. An online electronic travel authorization form, known as ETIAS, will be required to be filled out prior to arrival in Italy starting in 2025.

What are the best places to visit in Italy?

It would be easy to spend weeks in Italy, exploring the coastlines in the south and the captivating history of the north. A visit to Italy’s most stylish city, Milan, highlights its reputation as the fashion and finance capital, while also offering the chance to contemplate Leonardo DaVinci's The Last Supper painting in the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Explore Rome’s extensive history including where gladiators once battled in the Colosseum and Michelangelo's masterpiece, the Sistine Chapel ceiling, in St. Peter's Basilica. In the heart of Italy,  Florence is revered for its Renaissance architecture, while also providing a perfect starting point to explore the Tuscany region. The floating city of Venice is home to 150 winding canals and over 400 pedestrian bridges, which can be explored on foot or by gondola boat. Find sunshine and beaches along coastal destinations including the Cinque Terre, Amalfi Coast and the island of Sicily.

Is Italy LGBTQ+ friendly?

Italy still has a long way legally to recognize the LGBTQ+ community, as no formal laws have been passed to protect sexual orientation or gender identity. Urban cities including Rome, Milan, Venice, Florence and coastal towns Capri and Taorima are the most welcoming. Travellers should not have issues respectfully conducting themselves publicly, but some find smaller towns more conservative and less accepting.

What currency does Italy use?

Italy is a member of the European Union and uses the Euro (EUR) as its official form of currency. On average $1 USD is worth $.90 EUR, but exchange rates are always fluctuating, so check the latest rates before travelling. While credit cards are increasingly accepted, having cash on hand is especially important for smaller islands and towns.

Do I need to tip in Italy?

In general, tipping for meals and services in Italy is not required or expected, though the gesture of modest 5-10% tips is welcome. If dining as a group, a  servizio  charge may be added, which will provide staff with a tip. Alternatively, you may see a cover charge ( coperto ) on some bills, however this is not a tip.

Food & Drink

Italy’s food culture is as diverse as its once independent city states. Unified just over 160 years ago Italy’s cities once existed as city-states with their own specialties and menus based on what produce was available locally. This diversity in food culture remains to this day with French and Austrian influence in northern Italy, where complex meat dishes are to be found. In the south, Mediterranean flavours and more fish and seafood grace the table. Fresh tomato salads, crusty breads, pizza, pasta, and desserts like creamy gelato ice cream and delicate, spongy tiramisu are to be found everywhere.

The ancient Roman god of wine, that rosy-cheeked and rotund rascal, Bacchus, would be pleased with the wine culture of modern Italy. With 20 wine regions, Italy is home to some of the oldest wine-producing areas in the world. More than 60% of the grapes destined for vino in Italy is red, with Chianti being the most famous. Effervescent whites like Moscato and bubbly Prosecco are also gaining popularity and are excellent choices with fresh seafood by the coast. Coffee shops are called simply “bar” in Italy and are social hubs, swelling with locals shouting out their orders before work and during soccer games. Light lagers such as Moretti or Peroni are not as popular as wine, but go great with a Juventus game. A hearty  saluti!  with your neighbouring table over a football match, is an excellent way to dive into authentic Italian culture.

What is Italy’s traditional cuisine?

The traditional cuisine in Italy varies regionally from North to South. The terrain of Northern Italy is commonly used for raising cattle and sheep, resulting in renowned cured meals and specialty cheese such as asiago, pecorino, and gorgonzola. It is also home to tortellini pasta, creamy risotto, and polenta. In Central Italy the grape, wheat, and tomato crops thrive, as the farming season is hotter and longer. There you will find the birthplace of classic neapolitan pizza, and speciality pork products including salami and prosciutto. In Southern Italy, tomato-based recipes dominate, along with olive oil, capers, and seafood along the coast.

Even all the different traditional shapes of pasta can be traced regionally! A couple of examples,  Sicily is the home of spaghetti, while Campania in the south is known for rigatoni, ziti, and fusilli, and Emilia-Romagna is home to stuffed pastas. While there is variation in some dishes' names or preparation techniques, the overall sentiment of Italian cuisine revolves around simple, high-quality seasonal ingredients.

Italy has laws in place to protect the authenticity of its quality food products. Some famous traditional items are legally required to be made in a certain region to be labelled authentic, for example Parmigiano Reggiano must be produced in Emilia-Romagna, while Modena Balsamic vinegar must be processed in Modena.

What is dining etiquette in Italy?

Eating meals together is an essential part of Italian culture. Italians often eat dinner late, with most non-tourist restaurants not opening until around 7 pm, and locals commonly eating closer to 9 pm. You can expect meals to be served as multiple smaller plates, enjoyed in succession, beginning with an  antipasto,  otherwise known as an appetizer. Next up will be  primo , traditionally a rice-based or pasta dish, followed by  secondo , commonly a meat or fish platter. A vegetable dish,  contorni, may also be accompanied with the meal. This allows time to savour the food, and the company. And don’t forget to leave room for a sweet end to the night for  dolce,  dessert!

During a meal,  parmigiano cheese is not meant to be sprinkled over everything, though it might be provided by the server if it complements a certain dish. And, if there is bread on the table, you will not find butter to accompany it, rather olive oil for dipping. Bread is not eaten to fill up on before a meal, instead, use it to soak up sauces on your plate at the end. Be sure to wait until everyone has finished eating to leave the table.

What is the drinking etiquette in Italy?

A short toast, or a simple  salute , cheers, before sipping a beverage is common. Take care to make eye contact as a sign of respect to family and friends. Most alcoholic beverages are consumed with food, either during  aperivito  or with a meal. At meal time, it is most common to drink wine or water, a favourite being sparkling or  frizzante !

Wines are often chosen to complement the meal being served. Guests should appreciate the aromas and flavour notes. If you don’t want more wine to be poured in your glass, it is customary to leave the wine glass nearly full. Ordering a  digestivo , a small strong alcoholic drink to aid digestion, is common after a meal. Popular choices are  grappa ,  limoncello , and  amaro . Don’t be surprised to see these served along with a post-dinner espresso.

Does Italy cater to dietary restrictions?

Consider doing a bit of research before visiting Italy, as certain regions commonly feature dishes more suitable for certain dietary restrictions such as vegetarian or vegan. Once you find a couple of dishes that are suitable, finding restaurants in the area that serve those dishes will be easier. Not all restaurants will be willing to alter menu items to accommodate diners, but there are options across Italy for any dietary restrictions. Given cultural communication differences regarding dietary restrictions, keep communication direct, for example  I don’t eat meat,  versus  I am a vegan . Consider travelling with Italian translated cards to provide serving staff and chefs indicating any dietary restrictions.

For dietary restrictions such as gluten, you will be able to find AIC (Associazone Italiana Celiachia) signs at some restaurants, which means they will be able to accommodate gluten-free pasta, pizza and bread. As well, Italy is a part of the EU, and packaged food in grocery stores are required to list top allergens.

What do meals typically cost in Italy?

At a mid-range restaurant, expect to pay between 25-30 Euros per person, for a dinner in Italy. Lunch tends to be a quicker meal and less costly, averaging 15 Euros per person. Pricing can vary drastically based on type of food, and location, as popular destinations tend to have higher pricing. While seafood tends to be more expensive, pasta and pizza continue to be common and more affordable dining options. Many restaurants offer reasonably priced house wines, often surprisingly enjoyable, that are served on tap versus from a bottle. Also, consider seeking less busy parts of a city and opt for a lovely meal at a family owned osteria or trattoria!

Our trip to Italy (Versuvius Tour) was an outstanding experience thanks to Daniela Senise and the Perillo Team. Daniela was an awesome tour director managing our itinerary while keeping an eye on all the details to ensure we had a great experience. I know there are others behind the scenes working on the details too and want to express my appreciation for them as well.

Wherever we went, we never had to wait for anything. We will recommend a Perillo Tour to all of our friends and would definitely take another one of your tours again.

Italy Holiday Packages

Explore our holiday package deals in italy, frequently asked questions.

Deciding which Italy holiday package to choose can be difficult – there’s just so much to do. Keen historians will want to start in Rome, where centuries of history sit in between coffee shops and restaurants – the Colosseum and Vatican can’t be missed. Revolutionary art lines the walls of museums in Florence and Venice – wave hello to David in Florence, or gaze over Da Vinci’s Last Supper in Milan.

Head to the coast for beachside bliss – choose between the pebble-lined beaches of Amalfi, or the sandy Puglian perches or hop over to the ‘ball’ of Sicily, where seafood and spritz are best enjoyed by the sea. If your Italy holiday package falls over winter, the northern Alps will have all you need for a spectacular ski escape.

No Italy holiday package would be complete without sampling the local food – from pasta to gelato, focaccia to pizza and everything in between, the entire country is a foodie’s paradise.

Italy has long been the European playground for celebrities, with many opting to soak up summer amongst its villas and estates. In the north, Lake Como is a popular spot, while Capri in the south has welcomed the likes of Kate Moss and Beyoncé over the years.

Like most western European destinations, you can easily plan an Italy holiday by yourself. However, if you don’t want to lift a finger, an Italy holiday package is best – your accommodation and flights will be taken care of, leaving you more time to think about what you’re going to do – and eat!
