Ever close a browser tab by accident or lost a number of tabs after Safari crashed? It happens to the best of us. Thankfully, you can quickly reopen your last closed tab or restore tabs from your last browsing session with the tips below.

Open the Last Closed Tab in Safari on the Mac

Safari lets you undo your action of closing a tab--as long as you act promptly. If you close a tab by mistake and then open a new tab, you won't be able to restore the closed tab with the shortcut below, because the undo feature only works on your last action.

In OS X, after closing a tab, press Command+Z , the standard Mac keyboard shortcut for Undo. Your lost tab will be instantly restored. Alternatively, you can go to the Edit menu and select "Undo Close Tab".

For other tabs you've closed before the last one, head to the History men u for the list of sites you've recently visited.

Reopen Closed Windows in Safari on the Mac

You can also reopen a Safari window with the tabs you had open even days after closing the window or quitting Safari.

If you have more than one Safari window open and close one by mistake, go to the History menu and select "Reopen Last Closed Window."

If you quit Safari and want to restart it with all of the tabs you had open last time, go to the History menu and select Reopen All Windows from Last Session.

On a Mac, using Safari you can also either click and hold the + icon at the right of your tabs, or just quickly press ⌘⇧T to open your last-closed tab. In fact, you can keep hitting that combo and it will keep opening other recently-closed tabs.

Reopen and restore all closed tabs in Safari on iPhone or iPad

If you’ve accidentally closed tons of Safari tabs on iPad or iPhone and want to restore them, or you lost all of your Safari tabs by trying to create a Safari Tab Group (a surprisingly common occurrence, what a feature bug), you are probably desperately wondering how you can recover and reopen all closed tabs in Safari and restore them all to your iPhone or iPad.

Many people use Safari tabs as an alternative to bookmarks, keeping hundreds of tabs open at a time, but forget to bookmark them. Endless hours of research, resources, etc, open in tabs, can all be gone in a flash if you encounter a hiccup with Safari on iPhone or iPad. Oops. Indeed, Safari is unforgiving on the iPad (or iPhone), and your tabs may be toast.

Worried you lost your Safari tabs on iPad? Not so fast!

There’s good news and bad news.

While there’s no official “Reopen all closed tabs” option or ‘Restore previous session’ in Safari on iPadOS or iOS, you’re not out of options.

The bad news is that if you had tons of open tabs, say 300, 400, or 500 open tabs, they might be lost for good, or at least many of them may be gone.

But the good news is you can try to recover many of them through several different options. And if you have a keyboard hooked up to the iPad in particular, you’ll be able to get quite a few of the lost tabs back.

Restoring Closed Safari Tabs on iPad with Keyboard Shortcut

If you have an external keyboard, Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard, or similar keyboard with the iPad, you can use a keyboard shortcut in Safari to restore the last closed Safari tabs.

Hit Command + Shift + T on a keyboard repeatedly, until all tabs have been reopened

I have personally experienced catastrophic tab loss due to the Tab Groups bug, but by using the Command Shift T method I was able to recover about 200 of 500 lost Safari tabs. This is probably the most broadly useful trick, and the closest method to restoring all closed tabs in Safari on iPad.

Unfortunately, this trick is probably not available for iPhone, but you can try connecting a bluetooth keyboard to iPhone and giving it a shot anyway – let us know if it works.

Recovering Closed Tabs in Safari on iPad via New Tab Button

The plus button in Safari on iPad and iPhone is the traditional commonly used method used to recover closed tabs in iOS Safari and iPadOS too.

On iPad: Tap and hold on the + plus button, then select the closed tabs you wish to reopen from the drop-down menu
On iPhone: Tap the two overlapping squares icon to access tabs view, then tap and hold on the + plus button to select closed tabs you want to reopen

The + tab drop down menu that shows with a long press will reveal all tabs that have been closed recently, so repeat this process to reopen and recover closed tabs as needed.

Restoring Lost Tabs in Safari on iPad through History

You can also browse through Safari history to restore closed tabs, though if you have tons of tabs you are trying to restore you’ll be in the history menu for a while.

Tap the sidebar menu button, then tap on “History”
Tap on the history item(s) you want to restore the tab for

This is fairly tedious but it can be very effective if you don’t mind putting the time into restoring from browser history.

Of course if you deleted and cleared the browser history, this won’t be an option.

Restore from a Recent Backup to Recover All Lost Safari Tabs?

If your tabs were super important, perhaps you were doing tons of research and lost them all, and if you had a recent backup made from before you lost the tabs, you can also try to restore the iPad from the backup to recover those lost tabs.

However this usually does not work to recover the tabs if Safari is syncing through iCloud Tabs, so if you’re in that situation you’ll want to use the approaches above rather than the backup recovery approach.

[cmd]-[shift]-T doesn’t work on german installed macbook –> opens the [sharing] menu

This article is aimed at iPad users with a keyboard case or external keyboard attached, however, for Mac; Command+Shift+Tab in Safari for Mac (US English) will reopen the last closed tab. You can see what the equivalent would be on Mac (German) by going to the Safari “History” menu and looking for the “Reopen Last Closed Tab” option to see the associated keystroke. Hope that helps!

Method 1: Use the keyboard shortcuts or menu shortcuts

Just like you undo an email on Mac , you can also undo the tab shut actions with certain keyboard shortcuts or the Safari menu shortcuts on the context menu.

You can relaunch Safari on your computer and then press the Command + Z keys to bring back the last closed tab. If you have shut several tabs in one click, you should hold down the keyboard shortcuts repeatedly to restore all the tabs one by one.

Alternatively, you are able to select the Reopen Last Closed Tab option to bring the closed Safari tab back. Let me show you how to do:

Launch Safari on your Mac via Spotlight Search shortcuts .
Head to the History menu on the top toolbar of your Mac desktop.
Select Reopen Last Closed Tab on the dropdown menu of the History. You can also hit the responding Shift + Command + T keyboards to complete the restoration.
Then all the tabs you have closed on Safari will show up automatically.

Use the keyboard shortcuts or menu shortcuts

Method 2: Utilize the add icon on Safari

Safari's new tab icon allows you to create a new tab with a left click and restore the closed tab with a right click. You will have the list of all closed tabs and windows that you have closed as long as you right-click this icon.

Relaunch the Safari browser on your device.
Head to the upper right corner of the Safari main interface.

Choose the tab that you plan to restore and it will come back.

Method 3: Check the Recently Closed option

You are also allowed to recover your closed tab on Safari by checking the Recently Closed menu. Different from the Restore Last Closed Tab option, this way won't show you all the closed tabs and you can choose specific tabs to recover.

Launch the Safari browser on your Mac.
Locate the History tab on the top menu bar.

Click the website that you visited and then it will appear on the Safari main window.

Run the Safari browser on your iPhone, and tap the Show All Tabs icon at the bottom right corner of the iPhone screen.

1. Shake your iPhone or iPad to undo closed Safari tab

Believe me, the iPhone’s Shake to Undo feature is a lifesaver. For the uninitiated, this is an Accessibility feature that allows you to quickly undo or redo certain actions. For example, you can quickly undo or redo typing and restore recently closed Safari tabs.

3. Restore closed Safari tabs from History

Another way to retrieve closed tabs in Safari on iPhone is to head to the browsing history and reopen the desired tab. This trick works not only in Safari but on most other iPhone browsers as well.

Open Safari → Tap the Bookmark icon below the address bar.
Go to the Personal History tab (Clock icon 🕘) at the right.

Alternatively, you can tap and hold the page and select one of the options that appear in the pop-up.

Fortunately, you can open recently closed tabs in the mobile version of Safari, although it is a bit of a hidden feature.

Opening Recently Closed Web Pages in the Safari iPhone Browser (Guide with Pictures)

The steps in this article were performed on an iPhone 6 Plus, in iOS 9.

This method will work for other iPhone models that are also running iOS 9, as well as iPhone devices running the iOS 8 operating system.

Step 1: Open the Safari browser.

Step 2: Tap the Tabs icon at the bottom-right corner of the screen.

If you do not see the Safari menu, then you may need to scroll up on the Web page until it becomes visible.

Step 3: Tap and hold the + icon at the bottom of the screen.

This will open a new window where you will see the recently closed Web pages. You can then tap any of them to be taken to that page.

Now that you know how to open recently closed tabs in Safari on an iPhone , you won’t need to worry if you accidentally tap the x or swipe away a tab on your device.

Note that you will not be able to open recently closed tabs if you are in a private browsing session. The window for recently closed tabs will open, but there will not be any pages listed.

Eons ago, I wrote an article about viewing recently closed tabs on the iPad. Well, you can do this on the iPhone, too, but the steps are just a bit different on both devices than they used to be. So if you want to get back a Safari tab you closed out of recently on your iPad or iPhone, here’s how you’ll do it! For the iPhone, start by touching Safari’s “tabs” icon.

The subsequent screen shows you all of the tabs you have open. From there, touch and hold on the plus button.

On the iPad, you can skip the first step and just hold on the plus button in the toolbar.

On whichever device you’re using, the tabs you closed recently will appear after you do that! You can then tap any one to bring it back.

And at that point, you might wanna bookmark the important ones for safekeeping. I’ve never really understood why some folks keep 50 bazillion tabs open, but if that’s part of your workflow, then you at least have a way to find stuff if you accidentally close something you didn’t intend to!

Did you just close a Safari tab or window? No problem---you can get it back. Like all modern web browsers, Apple's Safari for Mac can reopen a closed tab or window---as long as you weren't browsing privately.

Tabbed browsing is perhaps the best thing to come to the internet since Keyboard Cat, and if you're anything like us you probably have more tabs open than you can ever remember looking at. That unfortunately sometimes leads to what we like to call "The Purge"---a cleanup of tabs that invariably has an unfortunate side effect---closing the one tab that you absolutely wanted to keep open.

Thankfully, someone at Apple thought about that and there's a handy dandy menu bar option that will return that recently closed tab to its former glory. There's even a keyboard shortcut, too!

There is, of course, one caveat to consider here. If you're browsing away in private browsing mode, and then close a tab, you're out of luck. No amount of spamming the right buttons or key combinations is going to bring it back. Sorry! Everything is discarded as soon as you close a private browsing tab. That ensures your private browsing stays private.

If you just closed a tab and realized that you shouldn't have, getting it back is a case of two mouse clicks.

To get started, click the "History" option in the menu bar at the top of the screen in Safari.

Next, click "Reopen Last Closed Tab."

Wonder as the tab springs back into view.

If you're in a super hurry, you don't even need to go clicking around. Instead, simply press Shift ⇧ + Command (or Cmd) ⌘ + T and your tab will be restored to its former glory.

Another way to restore closed tabs is to go to the History tab in Safari. The History tab lists the recent and past pages that you've browsed. Here's how to reopen tabs from History.

If you currently have no tabs open, the steps are the same! You'll simply be starting from a blank page instead of a current tab. Safari can hold a fairly long list of recently closed tabs, so even if your child is playing around and deletes all open Safari tabs, you should be able to recover them quickly.

How do I find recently closed tabs on Safari iPhone? When you go to open a new tab, unless you have already changed Safari's settings, you will open to the new tab page. From there, simply scroll down. You'll find a list of all your recently closed tabs at the bottom.

Yesterday Tab – How to Reopen Closed Tabs in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox

It happens all the time – you accidentally close a tab you weren't really done with, or you want to visit a site you found yesterday.

So what's the easiest way to reopen those closed tabs and get back to browsing?

In this article, you'll learn how to reopen closed tabs in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox so you don't ever have to panic if you close something by accident.

How to reopen tabs in Chrome

The keyboard shortcut.

There are a couple ways to reopen tabs in Chrome. If you're into keyboard shortcuts, the easiest way is to simply hit Command+Shift+T (on Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+T (on Windows).

If you hit that combo once, it'll bring up the last tab you closed. Hit it again, and it'll bring up the one before that. And so on.

The menu options way

If you're a bigger fan of right-clicking, just right click on the tab menu bar area, and select "Reopen Closed Tab":

If you do that again, it'll open the tab you closed before that, and so on.

How to review your browser history in Chrome

What if you can't remember exactly when you opened that tab you're looking for? Or you can't remember exactly what the site was called?

In that case, you might just want to check out your browsing history – the list of the last x number of sites you've visited/tabs you closed over the past days or weeks.

To do this, open your Chrome browser and click on the three little dots or green arrow in the upper right corner.

That'll bring up the menu you see in the image above. The fourth option is "History" – hover or click on that and another menu will open to the left. This will list the tabs you've recently closed (the last 8-10 or so).

If you want to see your whole browsing history, you can click on the history tab at the top of the leftmost menu that popped up, like below:

And that will open up your browsing history, which will look something like this:

You can see the scroll bar on the right - if you scroll down, it'll just keep loading more history. This lets you see where you've been on the internet.

Want to visit one of those sites? Just click on it and the browser will take you there (in the same window).

And that's it!

How to reopen tabs in Safari

Similarly, in Safari there are a couple ways to reopen tabs you've closed.

The same keyboard shortcut we talked about for Chrome, above, works in Safari as well.

Just hit Command+Shift+T (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+T (Windows) to open those tabs back up. Remember, you can do this multiple times to keep getting more closed tabs, in the order you closed them (from most-least recent).

Again, if you prefer using your mouse and menu bar, here's how it works in Safari:

In the menu bar at the top of your screen (where it has options like "Safari, File, Edit, View, History" and so on), select "History":

This will bring up a few options, as you can see above. I've hovered over "Recently Closed" (the first option) and it shows me my two recently closed tabs. If you use Safari as your browser you will likely see more tabs.

If you see the tab you just closed that you want to open back up, just click on it and it will open in a new tab/window.

You also have the option to "Reopen Last Closed Tab" (which also lists the keyboard shortcut next to it) and "Restore All Windows from Last Session".

How to review your browser history in Safari

If you want to review your whole browser history, just click on that first option under the "History" menu (that says "Show All History", see image above), and your entire history will appear:

Again, if you use Safari for your regular browser, your history will likely be longer :)

If you want to visit one of those sites directly, just double click on the listed URL and it'll take you there in that same window.

How to reopen tabs in Firefox

If you're a Firefox user, the process is fairly similar to what we discussed above.

You can open your recently closed tab(s) in Firefox the same way as in Chrome or Safari – with the Command+Shift+t (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+t (Windows) keyboard shortcut. Easy peasy.

And if you hit those keys again and again, it'll keep opening the tabs you closed in order from most recently closed to least recently closed.

To open your recently closed tabs in Firefox via menu options, just find the icon in the upper right corner that looks like books on a shelf:

When you click that, you'll get a dropdown menu that will have a "History" tab. Click on that, as highlighted in the image above.

This will bring up a new menu which will have a "Recently Closed Tabs" option, like you can see below:

If you click on that, another menu will open with all your recently closed tabs listed.

If you click on one of those tabs shown, Firefox will take you to that tab in a new window.

How to view your browser history in Firefox

Of course if you want to see all the browsing you've done, not just tabs you've recently closed, you can view your whole browser history.

Under that same little books-on-a-shelf looking icon in the upper right, again click on the "History" option. Then you'll see your recent history, as well as an option to see all history:

If you need more than just your recent history (shown there in the dropdown menu) you can click on "Show All History" at the bottom and it'll open up a separate window like this:

If you want to visit any of those pages, just double click on the URL/line and Firefox will take you there in the same window.

Now you can confidently reopen tabs in your browser so you don't lose track of what you were working on or learning.

Safari 101 : How to Clear Your Recently Closed Tabs List

When you accidentally close out of an important tab on your iPhone, Safari 's " Recently Closed Tabs " list really comes in handy. However, when it comes time to clear the list, things get a bit complicated. There's no "Delete" or "Erase" button on this page, but don't let that fool you — there are three easy ways to clear your recently closed tabs list.

Keep in mind that these steps will clear your list, so it will be irreversible. You need to make sure no tabs in the pile are important because once you go through with it, you won't be able to open that tab again. At least, not without having to do some history-diving in order to find it again.

And if you're wanting to clear your list of "Recently Closed Tabs" because of privacy issues where you don't want someone else with access to the iPhone to see what you've been reading, then you should consider using "Private" tabs more often, which won't get recorded in your list of "Recently Closed Tabs" anyway. More importantly, they won't appear in your browsing history.

Method 1: Force-Close the Safari App

Safari does not appear to have a limit to the number of closed tabs it will remember. That's pretty darn convenient, but it will forget them all if you force-close the app, which is the easiest way to clear the list.

Simply double-click the Home button, then swipe up on the Safari card to quit the app. On an iPhone X, you'd slowly swipe up from the home bar, hold for a moment, then let go to see all the app cards. Next, tap and hold on any card to bring up the close options, then tap the red minus button or swipe up to exit the app.

Method 2: Restart Your iPhone

If force-closing apps isn't your forte, maybe restarting is. If you have an iPhone X, hold the Side button plus one of the volume buttons for a few seconds. For all other iPhones, just hold down the Side button.

When you see "Slide to Power Off" appear on the display, swipe that bar to power down your iPhone. Once powered down completely, hold down the Side button for a few seconds until you see the Apple logo. When you're iPhone wakes up, your recently closed tabs list will be cleared.

Alternatively, you could also use the newer "Shut Down" command in iOS 11 to shut down your iPhone before you power it back on manually. Even better, you can just "Restart" your iPhone from the "Assistive Touch" menu so that it turns off and powers back on automatically.

Method 3: Clear Your Search History

Clearing your history not only covers your web-browsing tracks, it also purges your list of recently closed tabs.

To clear your history in Safari, tap the book icon in the bottom menu bar. If you don't see the bar, either tap on the top bar or swipe down on the page to make it appear. Then, tap the clock icon to access your History page.

Next, tap "Clear," then select any of the four time ranges offered. No matter which option you choose, each will erase all your recently closed tabs, regardless of when those tabs were actually closed.

Method 4: Just Wait It Out

While not very methodical, waiting will guarantee you lose all recently closed tabs. After a certain period of time, Safari flushes the list without your consent or knowledge. While the above steps are great for manually erasing your recently closed tabs list, know that your tabs do get erased periodically.

It's very difficult to test how long Safari takes in between deletions, and Apple does not appear to share the data publicly. However, from my experience, Safari will erase my recently closed tabs overnight, so these tabs must only be safe for a handful of hours. I guess it's called recently closed tabs for a reason.

This article explains how to reopen tabs or windows you may have closed by accident in the Safari web browser. You can also use the History list to reopen sites.

How to Undo a Closed Tab in Safari

You can open your lost tab using four methods. The first is to either select Undo Close Tab from the Edit menu, or press Command + Z on your keyboard.

You can restore multiple tabs you've closed by using the command repeatedly.

Another way to reopen a page you've closed is to click and hold the plus sign at the far right of the Tabs bar. Usually, you click this once to open a new tab, but holding opens a menu with a list of ones you've recently closed. Select the one you want to reopen.

The third way is to select Reopen Last Closed Tab under the History menu or press Shift + Command + T on your keyboard.

Finally, you can find a list of tabs you've recently closed under the History menu. Mouse over Recently Closed to see a list of pages you can reopen, and then click the one you want to restore.

Restoring Closed Windows

If you close a Safari window , you can reopen it just as you can reopen a closed tab, but the command is under a different menu. Select Reopen Last Closed Window under the History menu, or press Shift + Command + T on your keyboard.

The Reopen Last Closed Window and Reopen Last Closed Tab commands share the same spot in the History menu and keyboard shortcut. Which you see depends on which you closed most recently.

Reopen Safari Windows From Last Session

Besides being able to reopen closed Safari windows and tabs, you can also open all Safari windows that were open the last time you quit Safari.

Safari, like all the Apple apps, can make use of OS X’s Resume feature , which was introduced with OS X Lion. Resume saves the state of all the open windows of an app, in this case, any Safari window you have open. The idea is that the next time you launch Safari, you can resume right where you left off.

From the History menu, select Reopen All Windows From Last Session .

How to reopen recently closed tabs in Safari for Mac

Safari for Mac makes it simple to reopen any accidentally closed windows or tabs from your last browsing session , but did you know that you can also bring back one or more tabs or windows that you closed during your current session? This tutorial shows you how to do just that.

How to reopen closed Safari tabs on Mac

You can view multiple web pages in a single Safari window by opening them in tabs.

Each tab is its own process that consumes CPU time, RAM, and other system resources. Therefore, it makes sense to close any Safari tabs and windows you no longer need in order to cut down on RAM usage, conserve power, and free up CPU cycles for other tasks. But did you close one accidentally or unknowingly and wish to open it again?

Safari for Mac lets you reopen your recently closed tab(s) in three different ways.

1. Use keyboard or menu shortcut

Use the standard undo shortcut Command + Z to bring back the last closed tab or choose Undo Close Tab from the Edit menu. If you’ve closed multiple tabs in a row, invoke the shortcut repeatedly to reopen closed tabs one by one.

The shortcut won’t execute if you perform another undoable action after closing a tab. In that case, choose the option Reopen Last Closed Tab from Safari’s History menu or press the corresponding keyboard shortcut Shift + Command + T .

Like with the undo action, you can press this shortcut repeatedly to resurrect several tabs in the order you closed them, which is really nice. If you have closed a window instead of a tab, this menu option will read Reopen Last Closed Window .

2. Use the New Tab icon

Safari’s New Tab icon has a secret: not only does it let you create a new tab, but also quickly resurrects your recently closed tab(s). To access the list of recently closed tabs in older Safari versions, click and hold the “+” icon on the rightmost side of Safari’s tab bar.

In newer versions of Safari, this button appears in the toolbar.

Up pops a menu with all of the tabs you’ve closed in this browsing session. Select a webpage you’d like to reopen, then click the mouse or trackpad to bring it back.

I prefer this method over the undo action because it reopens a closed tab right where it was. I try to keep my tab bar organized so this has been really helpful. On the downside, restarting Safari clears the list of recently closed tabs under the New Tab button.

3. Check your Safari history

Lastly, you can reopen a recently closed webpage by choosing the Recently Closed item from Safari’s History menu, then choose the webpage from a sub-menu that you want to reopen. Or, select the Reopen Last Closed Window menu option to quickly bring back the most recently closed Safari window along with all of its tabs.

The list of recently closed webpages in the History menu remains intact when Safari is restarted, unlike that under the New Tab button—even though they’re the same lists. If you just restarted Safari and want to reopen a tab that was closed during a previous browsing session, use the history method.

Don’t forget that you can quickly consolidate and convert all your Safari windows to tabs in a single window by choosing the Merge All Windows action from the Window menu.

Hover your mouse on the History option in the drop-down menu.
From the Recently Closed Tabs menu, find the website or tab that you recently closed and click on it.
The recently closed tab will restore in the new tab.

Hackers may have stolen your Social Security number in a massive breach. Here's what to know.

A new lawsuit is claiming hackers have gained access to the personal information of "billions of individuals," including their Social Security numbers, current and past addresses and the names of siblings and parents — personal data that could allow fraudsters to infiltrate financial accounts or take out loans in their names.

The allegation arose in a lawsuit filed earlier this month by Christopher Hofmann, a California resident who claims his identity theft protection service alerted him that his personal information had been leaked to the dark web by the "nationalpublicdata.com" breach. The lawsuit was earlier reported by Bloomberg Law.

The breach allegedly occurred around April 2024, with a hacker group called USDoD exfiltrating the unencrypted personal information of billions of individuals from a company called National Public Data (NPD), a background check company, according to the lawsuit. Earlier this month, a hacker leaked a version of the stolen NPD data for free on a hacking forum, tech site Bleeping Computer reported .

That hacker claimed the stolen files include 2.7 billion records, with each listing a person's full name, address, date of birth, Social Security number and phone number, Bleeping Computer said. While it's unclear how many people that includes, it's likely "that everyone with a Social Security number was impacted," said Cliff Steinhauer, director of information security and engagement at The National Cybersecurity Alliance, a nonprofit that promotes online safety.

"It's a reminder of the importance of protecting yourself, because clearly companies and the government aren't doing it for us," Steinhauer told CBS MoneyWatch.

In a statement posted to its website, NPD said the breach involved a "third-party bad actor that was trying to hack into data in late December 2023, with potential leaks of certain data in April 2024 and summer 2024."

The company added that it is working with law enforcement and government investigators. NPD said it "will try to notify you if there are further significant developments applicable to you."

Here's what to know about the alleged hack.

What is National Public Data?

National Public Data is a data company based in Coral Springs, Florida, that provides background checks for employers, investigators and other businesses that want to check people's backgrounds. Its searches include criminal records, vital records, SSN traces and more information, its website says.

There are many similar companies that scrape public data to create files on consumers, which they then sell to other businesses, Steinhauer said.

"They are data brokers that collect and sell data about people, sometimes for background check purposes," he said. "It's because there's no national privacy law in the U.S. — there is no law against them collecting this data against our consent."

What happened with the USDoD hack?

According to the new lawsuit, USDoD on April 8 posted a database called "National Public Data" on the dark web, claiming to have records for about 2.9 billion individuals. It was asking for a purchase price of $3.5 million, the lawsuit claims.

However, Bleeping Computer reported that the file was later leaked for free on a hacker forum, as noted above.

How many people have been impacted?

The number of people impacted by the breach is unclear. Although the lawsuit claims "billions of individuals" had their data stolen, the total population of the U.S. stands at about 330 million. The lawsuit also alleges that the data includes personal information of deceased individuals.

Bleeping Computer reports that the hacked data involves 2.7 billion records, with individuals having multiple records in the database. In other words, one individual could have separate records for each address where they've lived, which means the number of impacted people may be far lower than the lawsuit claims, the site noted.

The data may reach back at least three decades, according to law firm Schubert Jonckheer & Kolbe, which said on Monday it is investigating the breach.

Did NPD alert individuals about the hack?

It's unclear, although the lawsuit claims that NPD "has still not provided any notice or warning" to Hoffman or other people affected by the breach.

"In fact, upon information and belief, the vast majority of Class Members were unaware that their sensitive [personal information] had been compromised, and that they were, and continue to be, at significant risk of identity theft and various other forms of personal, social, and financial harm," the lawsuit claims.

Information security company McAfee reported that it hasn't found any filings with state attorneys general. Some states require companies that have experienced data breaches to file reports with their AG offices.

However, NPD posted an alert about the breach on its website, stating that it believes the information breached includes names, email addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers and mailing addresses.

Can you find out if your data was part of the hack?

There are tools available that will monitor what information about you is available on the dark web, noted Michael Blair, managing director of cybersecurity firm NukuDo. Commonly breached data includes your personal addresses, passwords and email, he added.

One such service is how Hofmann, who filed the lawsuit, found out that his information has been leaked as part of NPD breach.

"Make sure to use reputable companies to look that up," Blair said.

What should I do to protect my information?

Security experts recommend that consumers put freezes on their credit files at the three big credit bureaus, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Freezing your credit is free, and will stop bad actors from taking out loans or opening credit cards in your name.

"The biggest thing is to freeze your credit report, so it can't be used to open new accounts in your name and commit other fraud in your name," Steinhauer said.

Steinhauer recommends consumers take several additional steps to protect their data and finances:

Make sure your passwords are at least 16 characters in length, and are complex.
Use a password manager to save those long, complex passwords.
Enable multifactor authentication, which Steinhauer calls "critical," because simply using a single password to access your accounts isn't enough protection against hackers.
Be on alert for phishing and other scams. One red flag is that the scammers will try to create a sense of urgency to manipulate their victims.
Keep your security software updated on your computer and other devices. For instance, make sure you download the latest security updates from Microsoft or Apple onto your apps and devices.

You can also get a tracking service that will alert you if your data appears on the dark web.

"You should assume you have been compromised and act accordingly," Steinhauer said.

The federal government is processing citizenship requests at the fastest clip in a decade, moving rapidly through a backlog that built up during the Trump administration and the coronavirus pandemic.

At ceremonies in courthouses, convention centers and sports arenas across the country, thousands of immigrants are becoming new Americans every week — and becoming eligible to vote in time for the presidential election this fall.

It’s unclear how many of the new voters live in battleground states, but a number of the states where Kamala Harris or Donald Trump must win have large and growing numbers of voting-age naturalized citizens, including Georgia, Arizona, Nevada and Pennsylvania.

In Savannah, Ga., people from 19 countries streamed into a federal courthouse recently to take the oath of allegiance.

“My case was done in less than six months,” said Gladis Brown, who is married to an American and emigrated from Honduras in 2018.

Generally, lawful permanent residents, known as green-card holders, are eligible to become naturalized citizens if they have had that status for at least five years, or have been married to a U.S. citizen for at least three years.

Green-card holders have many of the same rights as citizens. But voting in federal elections is a right accorded only to citizens. And that can be a powerful motivation to pursue citizenship, especially when big national elections are on the horizon.

“I’m so glad that the process moved quickly,” said Ms. Brown, who was one of the 31 immigrants being sworn in. “People like me want to vote in the election.”

After the ceremony, Ms. Brown celebrated with cake and punch from a local women’s volunteer group — and by completing a voter-registration form provided by a representative of the League of Women Voters.

Naturalization applications typically spike upward in the approach to an election.

“The surge in naturalization efficiency isn’t just about clearing backlogs; it’s potentially reshaping the electorate, merely months before a pivotal election,” said Xiao Wang, chief executive of Boundless, a company that uses government data to analyze immigration trends and that offers services to immigrants who seek professional help in navigating the application process.

“Every citizenship application could be a vote that decides Senate seats or even the presidency,” Mr. Wang said.

At under five months, application processing speed is now on a par with 2013 and 2014 . About 3.3 million immigrants have become citizens during President Biden’s time in office, with less than two months to go before the close of the 2024 fiscal year.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services took 4.9 months, on average, to process naturalization applications in the first nine months of the current fiscal year, compared with 11.5 months in fiscal 2021.

After taking office in 2021, Mr. Biden issued an executive order that sought to dial back his predecessor’s hard-line immigration agenda and “restore faith” in the legal immigration system. Among other steps, the order called for action to “substantially reduce current naturalization processing times” with the goal of strengthening integration of new Americans.

Unlike many federal agencies, the citizenship agency is funded mainly by fees paid by applicants, rather than by congressional appropriations, giving the administration latitude to define its priorities and the allocation of resources.

The Biden administration began deploying new technology and additional staff in 2022 to reduce the pending caseload of citizenship applications, which had ballooned because of heightened scrutiny by the Trump administration and protracted pandemic-related delays in conducting the swearing-in ceremonies.

The Biden administration also shortened the naturalization application to 14 pages from 20. It raised the application fee in April to $710 from $640, but made it easier for low-income people to qualify for a discount.

While there has long been partisan disagreement over how to tackle illegal immigration and overhaul the nation’s immigration laws, naturalizing lawful residents had broad bipartisan support. As president, George W. Bush signed an executive order in 2002 expediting naturalization for noncitizens serving in the military. Since he left office, he has hosted oath ceremonies at his institute in Dallas.

But citizenship has become more politicized in recent years.

Intent on curbing legal immigration, the Trump administration conducted lengthier reviews of naturalization applications. The processing time roughly doubled to about 10 months during Mr. Trump’s tenure.

The bottleneck prevented some 300,000 prospective citizens from naturalizing in time to vote in the 2020 election, according to estimates by Boundless .

It is a crime for noncitizens, including legal permanent residents, to attempt to vote in federal elections. Some Republicans, including former President Trump and Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, have spread unfounded narratives about undocumented immigrants being encouraged to vote by Democrats.

Some nine million green-card holders are currently eligible to become U.S. citizens, according to the latest official data. Naturalized Latinos, who make up the largest share of the new citizens, have historically leaned Democratic, as have naturalized Asians and Africans, according to Louis DeSipio, a political scientist at the University of California, Irvine, who studies voter behavior.

Citizenship confers benefits and legal protections. Citizens cannot be deported; green-card holders convicted of crimes can be sent back to their country of origin.

The four states with the largest number of immigrants who qualify for citizenship are California, New York, Texas, and Florida. Mexico, India, the Philippines, the Dominican Republic and Cuba are the top countries of origin.

While immigrants cite the right to vote as an important factor in their decision to naturalize, the reality is that many do not register, or do not cast ballots. Overall, naturalized citizens have a lower registration rate than native-born Americans.

“There has to be investment to turn them out, from the parties, churches, unions,” Dr. DeSipio said. “If you make an effort to turn them out, then they turn out.”

The NALEO Educational Fund, a nonpartisan organization that promotes Latino civic engagement, operates a hotline that it publicizes on Spanish-language media. The hotline helps people register and answers questions about mail-in ballots, polling stations and other election matters.

“People want to participate in our democracy, but they hit a wall when they don’t have the information they need,” said Juan Rosa, director of civic engagement at the fund.

A recent survey suggested that there was enthusiasm for voting in November.

Among naturalized citizens, 81.4 percent said they “definitely” would cast a ballot in the 2024 election, and another 14.5 percent said they “probably” would vote, according to the survey , which was conducted by the U.S. Immigration Policy Center at the University of California, San Diego, with the National Partnership for New Americans.

“The American electorate is as diverse as it has ever been, and much of that has been fueled by newly naturalized citizen voters, who are making up an increasingly large share of the electorate,” said Tom Wong, a political scientist at the university who led the study.

The oath of allegiance is the last step to obtaining U.S. citizenship, after passing a background check, health exam, interview and civics test.

In the Savannah federal courthouse, R. Stan Baker, the chief judge, shook hands and posed for a photo with each person who was sworn in. “You have the full rights of an American,” he said. “Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”

As the new Americans emerged from the courtroom, Chassidy Malloy of the League of Women Voters of Coastal Georgia approached several of them, offering voter registration forms.

Some left clutching the form, along with their citizenship certificate and a small American flag.

Others chose to register on the spot, including three members of the Patel family.

“This is a wonderful country that we want to be fully a part of,” said Nishang Patel, 28, a dentist born in Kenya who arrived in the United States as a child. “We will contribute and vote,” he said.

Cash App to award $15M to users in security breach settlement: How to file a claim

In a settlement, the mobile payment service was ordered to pay out $15 million in damages.

According to a class-action lawsuit obtained by USA TODAY, plaintiffs sued Cash App Investing and Block Inc. for the companies' "failure to exercise reasonable care in securing and safeguarding consumer information."

The lawsuit said that the data breach in December 2021 resulted “in the unauthorized public release of the personally identifiable information of 8.2 million current and former Cash App Investing customers.”

In addition, a former employee gained access to Cash App users’ personal information during their employment and downloaded the data without the users’ knowledge, the lawsuit said.

If users had unauthorized or fraudulent withdrawals or transfers of funds from their Cash App account between Aug. 23, 2018, and before Aug. 20, 2024, they are eligible to submit a claim for up to $2,500, the Cash App website said.

Do I qualify to file a claim?

Cash App users must have had an account on Aug. 23, 2018, and before Aug. 20, 2024 to be able to file a claim. Users who qualify must not have already been reimbursed by Block Inc., Cash App Investing or a third party, the mobile payment service said.

What types of claims can Cash App users file?

According to Cash App, a user can submit a claim for the following:

Out-of-pocket losses: Users can submit a claim that shows their Cash App account was involved in the data breach. If a user is eligible for reimbursement after submitting the required documentation to the company, they could receive up to $2,500.
Lost time: Cash App users who submit a claim may be eligible for reimbursement for lost time. Users can submit a claim for up to three hours at a rate of $25 an hour for time spent regarding the unauthorized users and data breach.
Transaction losses: If a user experienced a monetary loss and has not been reimbursed, they will be able to submit such a claim.

What if I have more than one Cash App account?

Users should submit only one claim form. But if you have multiple Cash App accounts for which you want to submit a claim, the mobile payment service recommends that users list all of their $(InsertYourCashTag) and information about their claims on a single claim form, Cash App said.

How can I submit a claim?

To file a claim, Cash App users can submit a completed claim form by Nov. 18. You can submit the form at https://cashappsecuritysettlement.com/submit-claim .
