Len phillips swing orchestra (new programme ‘another…100 years of big bands’, cadogan hall, 1 october).

“The band is sounding better than ever,”  says Joe Pettitt, the ‘force of nature ‘ who leads the Len Phillips Swing Orchestra. Known for their hit shows on Sky Arts, the Orchestra will be back at Cadogan Hall, Sunday 1 October at 3pm, with a new programme,  “Another…100 Years of Big Bands.” Joe Pettitt explains the background.  Feature/ interview by Kai Hoffman

len phillips big band tour

One thing that’s really quite special about this show is that “you can hear the music evolve,” Joe Pettitt explains. “Whereas with a lot of concerts you’re just dipping in and out, one minute you’re playing something from the ‘50s, the next something from the ‘30s, then you’re playing something new, with this program, you can really hear how these arrangers cut their teeth, how they worked out what they were doing, how the recording techniques changed. You can hear how the singers went from doing novelty numbers or a quick vocal refrain to being the star of the show. Then you get the electric sounds that appeared during the ‘70s and the contemporary sounds that you’ll get from a big band today.”

Starting out with the glorious sounds of swing from the 1920s, Joe Pettitt tells me how “the earlier decades of the program sample from the vast swing repertoire of the Golden age. This includes the ‘30s with Benny Goodman, the ‘40s Glenn Miller sound, ‘50s Count Basie, Peggy Lee, Ella and Sinatra ‘on fire.’ The ‘60s are cool and quirky with Sammy Davis doing great stuff. But when the ‘70s and ‘80s come along, big bands are certainly not top of the charts anymore”. When faced with this challenge previously, the LPSO added a Maynard Ferguson tune, or Harry Connick Jr., but it “got to a point where it felt like those were all used up. Where was the commercial, current sound of a big band? It’s in TV themes. It’s in the movies.” As Joe says, “We’re not trying to find weird and wonderful things that no one knows, we’re trying to find the real gold that drove the sound of the music through, and that’s where it is. The ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, today. If you think of The Incredibles films or The Simpsons , that’s a big band sounding amazing.”

Led since 2010 by force of nature Pettitt, the Len Phillips orchestra includes many of the UK’s top musicians, all hand-selected for their individual abilities. The upcoming Cadogan Hall concert includes Youtube sensation and high-note-wizz Louis Dowdeswell , who – as a trumpet player with 93.5K followers – has a spectacular range and stamina on the instrument, blazing ahead on music from Disney’s The Incredibles films and more. (If you have a moment, go check out Louis Dowdeswell’s channel – and then immediately thereafter book your tickets for Cadogan Hall, where he will be performing “Into the Unknown,” from Frozen.) Other band members to look out for at the show include new member Mike Smith on the drums, and top session players, from contemporary London jazz scene dynamo sax player Jon Shenoy , lead trumpet Russell Bennett (John Wilson Orchestra), trombonist Chris Traves – a specialist in the pixie plunger mute- and Gemma Moore , the best baritone sax you could ever wish for as the foundation of the sax section. “The band is sounding better than ever.”

Joining them at Cadogan will be singers Nicola Emmanuelle and Matt Ford . With a crystal clear voice which just sails over the band, Nicola worked with the LPSO for the first time during their Abbey Road livestream and has played Ella Fitzgerald in the Rat Pack in the West End.  Matt Ford is one of the “best big band singers in the U.K., flawless every time,” and is famous for his appearances on Friday Night is Music Night amongst many other achievements.

Inspired by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Wynton Marsalis, Pettitt makes every effort to make the music feel incredibly alive, not nostalgic. With arrangements commissioned by experts including Colin Skinner, Callum Au, Phil Steel , and Pete Long , amongst others, the music might be seventy years old, but it is not played in a museum-piece sort of way. “You’re playing it with massive respect to the tradition, but treating it as an art form, like a symphony orchestra playing music that’s three hundred years old, but not as a nostalgia trip, it’s some fantastic music. Whether it’s ancient or new, our music is presented with some of the absolute best musicians, and it swings , it’s not apologetic. It grabs you and it goes ‘Yeah, wow!’ No one is pretending, it’s not just a bunch of great musicians playing well, it’s got that extra, out-of-this-world energy you only get when performers are really right in the moment and giving it their all.”

Originally starting out on the bass, Joe Pettitt was offered the position of bandleader in 2010 when Len Phillips retired. Although it was a big decision to make, as running a big band is a huge undertaking, Joe realised an opportunity to take over running a band with an audience, a full pad, and gigs in the diary was a once-in-a-lifetime chance. “An all-consuming passion drives you on, you have to keep reinventing things. People always say ‘That will never work, you can’t do that, no that doesn’t work’ and you just have to keep going. Everybody has those moments when you question yourself. Then, you stand in front of a band which sounds like that, you have the best seat in the house, and it is just exhilarating. You come off the stage and the audience tells you what a fantastic time they’ve had, and you’re on cloud nine. Also, you can’t underestimate the responsibility of keeping bands like this on the road. It’s important. It’s a musical tradition which needs to be kept alive. It’s some of the best music that’s ever been made.”

The upcoming show will be their third and final evolution of this particular concept of 100 Years of Big Band, which originated during the covid years when the band was forced to be exceptionally innovative over many long months and lockdowns, and was eventually supported by the Arts Council Cultural Recovery Fund. The orchestra live-streamed a myriad of concerts with whichever number of people were allowed to be in one space at a time – the rule of two, or six, or with the full band spaced two metres apart from each other and the audience socially distanced out in a field, under an awning in the garden in the freezing cold, etc. One highpoint which really stood out for Joe and the band was their livestream direct from Abbey Road Studios, with singers Matt Ford and Nicola Emmanuelle (both appearing soon at Cadogan); all of these shows can still be viewed on the Len Phillips Swing Orchestra Youtube channel.  All of these streams have had thousands of views – and the tenacity of this band, and this particular bandleader, do not go unnoticed during this incredibly pressurised period of history. Thanks to the Arts Council support they had received, the LPSO recorded their first 100 years of big band show at the Cadogan Hall as the world was opening up again, and within weeks the film was taken up by Sky Arts and broadcast.

The LPSO is on top form and, with the brilliant acoustics of Cadogan Hall, “Another…100 Years of Big Bands” is certainly going to be a resounding success. Check out the Len Phillips Swing Orchestra website for the current tour schedule, including the Cadogan Hall show on Sunday 1 October.

100 Years of Big Bands

Len Phillips Swing Orchestra with Matt Ford and Nicola Emmanuelle

Sunday 11 September 2022, 15:00

Programme includes: Rhapsody in Blue (Paul Whiteman) Sing, Sing, Sing (Benny Goodman) In the Mood (Glenn Miller) Come Fly with Me (Frank Sinatra) April in Paris (Count Basie) ’S Wonderful (Ella Fitzgerald) Feeling Good (Michael Bublé) and many more

Joe Pettitt musical director Matt Ford voice Nicola Emmanuelle voice Len Phillips Swing Orchestra

The Len Phillips Swing Orchestra makes a welcome return to Cadogan Hall to celebrate a century of swing, tracing the development of big bands from Louis Armstrong’s New Orleans and the Paul Whiteman Orchestra through the golden age of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller to the contemporary tracks of Michael Bublé and Harry Connick Jr. Paying homage to the great big band singers Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr and Cab Calloway along the way, feet will be tapping to the sheer power of a 17-piece swing orchestra.

With their latest single making the Top 40 in the UK Singles Chart and Number 1 in the iTunes Jazz Chart, the Len Phillips Swing Orchestra is Britain’s most popular big band. Their lockdown livestream series attracted over 100,000 views and included the very first streamed big band concert from London’s iconic Abbey Road Studios.

Matt Ford is perhaps best known for his work with the John Wilson Orchestra, including six appearances at the BBC Proms.

Playing the part of Ella Fitzgerald in the West End show The Rat Pack: Live from Las Vegas , Nicola Emmanuelle is one of the most outstanding singers in Britain today.

“…glorious, and in no small part thanks to you and your marvellous orchestra!” (Dame Joan Collins) “It was a joy to be up close and personal with the Len Phillips band.” (Len Goodman) “The perfect ingredients for a superb afternoon of music.” ( Eastbourne Herald ) “Ford is the archetypal crooner in the mould of Sinatra and Crosby.” (David Mellor, Mail on Sunday )

Description

Highlights:.

  • Experience medieval Kitay Gorod (China town).
  • Wander picturesque Red Square and Alexander Garden.
  • Explore grand Christ the Savior Cathedral on our Red Square tour.
  • Breathtaking panoramic views from Patriarch bridge.
  • Enjoy a hearty lunch on the large open verandah and marvel at the stunning views of the Kremlin.
  • Learn about Russian culture from the local through relaxed cultural discussions.

Tour Itinerary:

Red square:.

Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!

  • - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
  • - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
  • - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
  • - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
  • - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
  • - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

  • - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
  • - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
  • - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
  • - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef).

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it.

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it.

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash.

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb.

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think?

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade.

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2.

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....
