Churchill, Manitoba, often dubbed “the polar bear capital of the world” (and the best spot to see polar bears in Canada ), is one of Manitoba’s most incredible locations. There are very few places around the world where you can see so many polar bears and beluga whales in the wild, so it’s no wonder that Churchill is such a draw for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. There’s also a rich culture and history, Northern Lights viewing, mural tours, art galleries, and so many more things to do in Churchill .

Winnipeg to Churchill Feature

From July to November, many tourists make their way to Churchill in order to see the polar bears, the beluga whales, or both, depending on the season. July, August, and September are known for spotting belugas in Hudson Bay and the Churchill River, although it’s still possible to see polar bears during these months, too. October and November are the most popular months for seeing polar bears, as they’re often quite easily found on the snowy tundra. January, February, and March are popular for the Northern Lights, which are at their brightest and most visible during the colder and darker months.

Seeing as it’s so remote, this tiny community on Hudson Bay has very few options when it comes to actually getting there, but you’ll most likely start your trip in Winnipeg, Manitoba’s capital city. Thankfully, there are regular plane and train routes from Winnipeg to Churchill during tourist season. Our biggest tip? Book EARLY. Tours, flights, trains, and accommodations all fill up months in advance, especially when it comes to tourist season. Here, then, is everything you need to know about getting from Winnipeg to Churchill.

Town of Churchill Sign

Land Acknowledgments

Manitoba is made up of Treaty 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 Territory, as well as communities that are signatories to Treaty 6 and Treaty 10. Manitoba is home to the original lands of the Anishinaabe, Anish-Ininiwak, Dakota, Dene, Ininiwak, and Nehethowuk peoples, as well as the homeland of the Métis peoples.

About the Route

Winnipeg to Churchill is approximately 1,000 kilometres as the crow flies, and the two are found at near north and south opposites of one another in Manitoba. However, there are no paved roads that lead directly to Churchill, making this route slightly more complicated than others in the province. If you plan on visiting Churchill, your journey will have to involve a train or a plane at some point; there is currently no way to drive a car or take a bus to Churchill.

If you do want to drive the majority of the way to Churchill, most people drive from Winnipeg to Thompson and then take the train or fly from there. More on that below.

Winnipeg to Churchill by Plane

Without a doubt, the fastest and the most convenient way to get from Winnipeg to Churchill is by plane. Thankfully, there are many flights from Winnipeg to Churchill per week during tourist season, although air service is indeed available all year round. We highly recommend booking your flight well in advance of your trip, because flights fill up quickly, especially in polar bear season.

Calm Air is the best airline to get you from Winnipeg to Churchill (and, often, the only one). Your flight will depart from Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport and arrive at Churchill Airport. Flying to Churchill from Winnipeg takes approximately two hours, but be prepared for inclement weather to possibly delay or even cancel your flight; you are travelling to the rugged North, after all!

Calm Air to Churchill

If you end up booking a tour – we’re big fans of Lazy Bear Expeditions here at Road Trip Manitoba – your flight is often included in your package price.

It is also possible to fly to Churchill with Calm Air from either Thompson or Gillam, so another option is to take the train or drive to either location and then fly to Churchill from there.

Winnipeg to Churchill by Train

Feeling adventurous? A fantastic way to see Manitoba is to do so by train. VIA Rail Canada offers trains from Winnipeg to Churchill every Sunday and Tuesday, while the train departs Churchill every Thursday and Saturday for the journey back to Winnipeg. Just as with flying to Churchill, we recommend booking your train tickets well in advance of your journey. Be sure to check prices and book your train tickets via the VIA Rail Canada website .

Train to Churchill

Taking the Churchill train is usually cheaper than flying, but it’s always important to compare prices and plan ahead of time in order to find the cheapest way to Churchill. Be prepared to settle in and get cozy: the train from Winnipeg to Churchill takes approximately 48 hours , or two full days. But don’t worry… you’ll have gorgeous Manitoba scenery out your window to keep you entertained! In fact, you’ll cover 1697 kilometres by train to Churchill once you leave Union Station in Winnipeg.

Another option is to take the train from Thompson or Gillam to Churchill. Some people drive or take the bus to either location and then catch the Churchill train from there.

Winnipeg to Churchill by Car

Currently, there are no paved roads that lead all the way to Churchill. However, if you would like to drive for most of the way, many people drive to Thompson or Gillam and then fly or take the train the remainder of the way. Winnipeg to Thompson is approximately 760 kilometres, or around eight hours of driving, while Winnipeg to Gillam is approximately 1,000 kilometres or about 11 hours of driving. It’s certainly an amazing way to see Manitoba, and you get to stop wherever you’d like along the way!

A Churchill Sunset

We have an entire guide on getting from Winnipeg to Thompson , including information about renting a car in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg to Churchill by Bus

Currently, there are no paved roads that lead all the way to Churchill, so taking a bus directly to Churchill isn’t an option. However, it is possible to take a bus to Thompson or Gillam and then fly or take the train from there.

Thankfully, there are multiple bus routes from Winnipeg to Thompson and Gillam. Prices and journey times will differ depending on the company, the day, and the time of year. We always recommend booking your bus journey ahead of your intended day of travel in order to find the cheapest price and best option for your trip.

The bus lines that run north from Winnipeg include Mahihkan Bus Lines , NCN Thompson Bus Lines , and Maple Bus Lines .

Winnipeg to Churchill by Other Options

It is entirely possible to take a private transfer or tour from Winnipeg to Churchill; you’ll have to book a private charter flight in order to do so. Be prepared to pay, though, as it is extremely expensive!

We hesitate to recommend any specific charter companies or private tours, as they can change daily. If this is something that interests you, we recommend reaching out to a travel agent that specializes in travel to Churchill.

Things to Do Along the Way to Churchill

If you’re driving north from Winnipeg to Thompson or Gillam, and you’re not in a huge rush, there are tons of spots to explore along the way. After all, you have hundreds of kilometres of Manitoba to drive across! Here are a few of our favourite stops along the way:

  • As you’re driving past so much water on your journey – both Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg are on the route – make sure to stop at one of Manitoba’s beaches ! One of our favourites is Twin Lakes Beach, about 100 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.
  • Head to Steep Rock on the edge of Lake Manitoba, where you’ll find one of the province’s most popular spots for photography due to its stunning rock formations.
  • You also pass by many Manitoba provincial parks on your route from Winnipeg to Thompson; you might want to stop for a little adventure, picnic, or hike. Some of the best include Lundar Beach Provincial Park, Little Limestone Lake Provincial Park, and/or Pisew Falls Provincial Park.

Pisew Falls

  • Stay at family-run Paint Lake Lodge in the middle of a boreal forest; Paint Lake Provincial Park is one of our top recommended spots in Northern Manitoba.
  • While Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg dominate the Manitoba landscape, there are actually over 100,000 lakes in the province… and you’ll pass by many of them on your journey to Thompson or Gillam! One of our absolute favourite lakes in Manitoba is Little Limestone Lake, a shimmering turquoise lake that changes colour depending on the light. It’s perfect for canoeing or kayaking in summer.

Upon Arrival in Churchill

You made it!

The Churchill Airport is very close to town – if you have a tour booked, they’ll arrange your transportation to your accommodation – and the train station is directly in town.

However you’ve chosen to get from Winnipeg to Churchill, once you arrive in the community, you’ll probably want to get something to eat or check in to your accommodation. Also, keep in mind there is also the Town of Churchill website for lots of tourist and travel information and advice on what to do in the “polar bear capital of the world”.

Where to Stay in Churchill

For places to stay, we recommend the Iceberg Inn , the Churchill Hotel , or the Bear Country Inn . All of these offer clean and comfortable accommodations, ensuring you a good night’s sleep so you can explore Churchill the following day. We have an entire guide on the best Churchill hotels .

IceBerg Inn Churchill

For a more intimate local experience, book a stay at Sarah’s Dreamhouse B&B . They offer free pickup and drop-off at the airport, and you’ll be treated to breakfast every morning.

There are also lots of specialty accommodation options in Churchill, including the Frontiers North Adventures’ Tundra Buggy Lodge, the Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge and the Lazy Bear Lodge – an authentic Arctic log cabin.

Where to Eat in Churchill

There are not many restaurants in Churchill , but there are some options for good quality eats. We recommend eating at the Lazy Bear Café , the Tundra Inn Dining Room and Pub , or the Seaport Hotel , but note that some restaurants are seasonal and not open all year round! And if you want a truly unique dining experience, check out Dan’s Diner (a pop-up restaurant in February and March so that you can view the Northern Lights while you dine).

Lazy Bear Cafe Churchill

Your questions answered.

Find out what is included in your trip and have all your questions answered. We are here to help.

What’s Included

Frequently asked questions, is a polar bear sighting guaranteed.

The polar bear migration is a special occasion, and it offers visitors a high probability of seeing the bears in the wild. Our specialized tour operators know the landscape extremely well, and will take you to places where bears are commonly spotted. There is no guarantee of a sighting, however.

What is the best time to see polar bears?

The best time to see polar bears is in October and November, during the annual fall migration. The polar bears congregate on the shore of Hudson Bay near Churchill waiting for the water to freeze so the annual seal hunt can begin.

What else can I do on a polar bear trip?

When you’re not out looking for polar bears there are opportunities to learn about northern Manitoba’s Indigenous culture, history and wildlife by visiting the Itsanitaq Museum, the Parks Canada Interpretive Centre and joining evening talks with a local expert. There’s also a chance to go dogsledding.

What is the VIA Rail experience like?

VIA Rail is Canada’s national train provider, with routes running Coast to Coast and through remote parts of northern Canada. The type of train depends on your journey, and can vary from the classic trans-continental sleeper trains to daylight trains with overnight stops.

Where do I sleep on the train and what are the features of Sleeper Plus Class?

This trip itinerary features a private cabin in Sleeper Plus Class on VIA Rail's The Canadian train. Each cabin features comfortable seating that converts to a bed. Cabins include a sink and toilet and access to a shared shower.

In Sleeper Plus Class, you’ll also enjoy gourmet meals in the dining car and access to the train's viewing cars, where you can watch the passing scenery and meet fellow travellers. Complimentary tea, coffee and snacks are available throughout your journey. Alcoholic beverages are not included but are available for purchase.

Is there a dining car on the Canadian Train?

Yes. Sleeper Plus Class and Prestige Class passengers have access to the dining car, which serves three chef-prepared meals daily. In Economy Class, passengers have access to meals, snacks and a variety of beverages served by train attendants. For Economy Class passengers, the Canadian Train cost doesn't include meals or snacks.

Most dietary requirements, food allergies, and other requirements can be accommodated with advance notice.

What are the expected weather conditions and what clothing is recommended for this polar bear trip?

During the fall season, temperatures in Winnipeg can vary from -6 degrees C to 11 degrees C (21 degrees F to 51 degrees F). Temperatures in Churchill can vary from -13 degrees C to -2 degrees C (9 degrees F to 29 degrees F). The Tundra Buggies are heated, but it is best to wear warm layers throughout the trip.

We recommend bringing a warm winter coat, snow pants, thick socks, gloves, hat, and other insulated layers. Winter clothing rentals are available if you do not own the appropriate gear. These would be an additional cost and subject to availability. For more information, please speak to your Vacation Advisor.

What level of physical activity is required for polar bear viewing?

Most of the polar bear viewing is operated from the Tundra Buggy, so is suitable for guests who are less active. To access the Tundra Buggy, you will need to go up 12 steps. For other activity details, please see the full trip itinerary or speak to one of our Vacation Advisors.

TRAVELER REVIEWS

“Discover Churchill is the choice for photographers, no doubt! Churchill is an incredible place, the history, the people and of course the bears. With Discover Churchill you are immersed into all of this. There is no better way to photograph polar bears in Churchill, experienced guides and their local network make all the difference in finding and putting you where you need to be. The photography experience you receive is a bucket list item for any wildlife photographer.”

Graeme Purdy @graemepurdy

Well, Alex from Discover Churchill made this dream a reality and I would without any hesitation whatsoever recommend him. In fact, I have several times and all returned as delighted as I was. You see, Alex is everything you would want in a polar bear guide and more. For starters, your safety is his prime concern. He has your back while your face is behind the camera. He understands the bear’s behavior and reads the situation around you in such a way that you always feel totally safe. Equally important, Alex gets you into position. In many instances, he anticipated the bear’s trajectory and relocated us to a prime location to get unbelievable images. His knowledge of the area really pays off. Of course, you spend a lot of time with your guide on these types of trips, so his personality should also be a key consideration. You will quickly discover Alex to be a very nice guy with an amazing sense of humor. He is definitely passionate for what he does, and has an undoubtable profound respect for these wonderful animals.

So if you are seriously considering a trip to the polar bear capital of the world, do not hesitate to reach out to Discover Churchill. I guarantee you will have a trip of a lifetime.

Jose Albero @jose.albero_wildlife

In Nov. 2020 I headed back to Churchill, MB. for my 5th time in search of polar bears to photograph. In preparing for this trip I did my typical research along with reaching out to a couple of fellow photographers to get some insight into guide recommendations for the area. I needed a guide to get me out on the land safely while fulfilling my need of capturing beautiful images of the polar bear.

Research led me to Alex and Discovery Churchill and he didn’t disappoint. Pick up times were prompt and the days were filled with locating the bears in a safe and respectful manner. Alex communicated with his other drivers and guides to ensure that the area had eyes on it without having to needlessly race all over the area which would cause disturbance to the otherwise peaceful tundra along the shores of Hudson’s Bay.

Alex along with the keen eyes of his other guides ensured that we were able to photograph bears everyday while maintaining safe distances and protocols for both the photographers and the bears.”

“I can’t say enough about the crew over at Discover Churchill! They were all amazing in so many ways. Their love for the Bears came through in every action and every word. You could tell this was more than just a job for them but a true calling. Norman with his hawk eyes spotting the slightest movement, Stephanie with her warmth and hilarious humour. Let’s not forget Alex with all of his knowledge, passion and dedication to his clients, team but most importantly the wildlife. Thank you for an amazing bucket list experience! Can’t wait for next year!!”

  • 572LoisP 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic trip Over my 80 plus years I have been fortunate to have travelled many places. My last trip to Churchill with lazy Bear Lodge ranks right at the top of the list. The first day there we saw Belugas, Polar Bears and the Northern Lights. Jackpot!!!! I have mobility issues and use a walker. The young men who drove the tour buses, ushered us around activities, watched for our safety were teriffic. Not only were they very professional and competent they were kind and considerate. They helped me numerous times, on and off buses, Zodiacs, boats and Tundra vehicles. The best part ? they made it fun. The staff at the lodge were equally thoughtful and helpful. It was a great, probably, final trip for me. Lois Perkins Read more Written September 10, 2023
  • TOMnewrichmond_Wi 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Exceeded expectations My wife and I were amazed at how organized the Lazybear lodge was. We saw polar bear, beluga whales, northern lights, kayaked with whales, auga-glided with whales, had wonderful meals and a very clean room. The kayaks, zodiacs, boats, busses, vans, tundra crawlers and lodge were 1st rate. We especially liked our guide Adrian and the barista named Paige. Read more Written August 26, 2023
  • Pridemitch123 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Trip of a lifetime! Hubby and I had an amazing trip to Churchill on an Alexander and Roberts trip (with Lazy Bear Expeditions). A different sort of trip for us, as we wanted to experience the polar bears and beluga whales, as well as a different part of the world. Our guide Deacon is the quintessential Renaissance man - extremely knowledgeable, personable young man. Who truly loves every aspect of his job and his hometown, it truly shows! Together with our driver Ryan (this guy was a hoot!) they guided us on some amazing adventures. Our boat tour of Hudson Bay with Lazy Bear Expeditions was incredible - we saw several polar bears roaming the shores, a couple lazily swimming in the water, what fun. They were able to take us close enough to get some great shots and not disturb the bears. Several pods of beluga whales which was interesting (but nowhere near as exciting as when we saw them on the upcoming aqua glide tour). Really nice day, and sidenote - their hot chocolate on board is made with milk and whipped cream, not a packet, must have! ;-) We next spent the next morning with Dave Daley and Wapusk Adventures - learned about dog sledding, had an opportunity to go on a dog sled run through the woods (those dogs are INCREDIBLE!!!!) and heard stories about the Hudson Bay Dog Quest sled race. I must admit, I have the utmost admiration for Dave, his family and their commitment to their dogs and their people. This was well worth the trip and not to be missed. Then we went on to the aqua glide. I was a bit hesitant about this one so I chose to just ride in the zodiac, and let hubby have the fun. We had a group of 8 of us on this zodiac, and towed a large mat where 2 people would lie face down with goggles on, to look in the water and see the belugas up close. Wet suits were provided. Deacon found us a spot and advised us to sing (no kidding!) because belugas are curious want to check you out. Higher pitched the better. He was not kidding - the group in the zodiac would be singing (we resorted to actual high pitch tones which were atrocious but they worked) when suddenly we had pods of belugas swimming right next to us. Different experience from being on a boat, because in this zodiac they are RIGHT NEXT TO YOU. SO - MUCH - FUN!!! Lazy Bear Lodge is beautiful, quaint. Rooms are small, but clean and well kept. Staff was genuinely nice and very helpful. We took a zodiac out to the fort, hit a wave and hubby and I were drenched - as in it looked like we took a shower with our clothes on. One of the housekeepers took all of our clothes and dried and folded them so we did not have to travel with sopping wet clothes. Really nice, and all because she noticed us when we returned from the trip. I thought the food at Lazy Bear was exceptionally good - the elk in particular was done so well, not gamey at all. Great menu selection. Prices are really high - I am really impressed that the people who live out this way are able to handle these prices. But when you consider that the only way you can access the town is via rail or airway it all makes sense. If you are considering a trip of this sort I would highly recommend Lazy Bear Expeditions to make it come true. Thanks to Deacon, Ryan and the entire Lazy Bear staff for a wonderful time! • ak5491 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Very good trip We went on the Polar Bears and Belugas tour. Tour guides and staff at the lodge were all very friendly, pleasant and helpful. The food at the restaurant was very good at lunch and dinner and on an evening when we came back late from a tour they kept it open for us after regular closing time. Breakfast was a buffet. Rooms at the lodge are quite small with only a small desk and chair for furniture, and all have two double beds (no other options available). The tours were generally well organized except for one glitch where 2 tours were scheduled too close together without letting us know. Our tours as a whole spent more time on belugas than looking for bears, which was a bit disappointing for us. We did see 6 bears on two of the tours, 2 of which were asleep among the rocks. The guides were very good at finding them and pointing them out. Our guide did say that they are solitary and range over a wide area, and we can generally expect to see 1 or two on the coast boat tour or the tundra tour, so seeing 6 was a good experience. We saw hundreds of belugas on the boat and zodiac tours, often quite close to us. The only tour that did not go as well as expected was the Aquaglide tour, which is an additional large cost. The people taking their turn before us saw several groups of belugas, we only saw one group up close. The problem is that this tour is in the Churchill River, which is very murky, with very poor visibility. Belugas more than 3-4 feet away are just blurry shapes. Only one passed about 1-2 feet in front of us and could be clearly seen. No one told us this until we were already on the tour. From our experience I don't think I can recommend it. We did get lucky and had a clear sky on two of the nights and saw amazing displays of the Aurora Borealis. On one of the nights a guide took us on a bus out of town to a very dark area which made viewing ideal. You can place your name on a list at the front desk and they will notify you (wake you up) when the aurora is visible. Overall we were very happy with the trip and the experience. My only caution is to limit one's expectation on how many bears you're likely to see, even if they tell you that there are more bears around than people living in Churchill. • Brooksva 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fabulous trip Churchill is remote. This is probably the nicest place to stay in Churchill and this guided trips we had were excellent. We had multiple experiences seeing polar bears and beluga whales on a bus, in zodiacs, kayaking, and in the arctic crawler. We saw many other animals too. The staff is helpful and informative. The log lodge is charmingly rustic. Rooms are clean and small. Food is well intentioned- you are not coming to Churchill for gourmet dining. An amazing experience. Read more Written August 13, 2023
  • Meander59030092408 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Polar Bears and Beluga Whales all around us. How do you describe one of the most amazing places, fantastic!!! Lazy Bear Expeditions and Lazy Bear Lodge exceeded our expectations. Sue and the entire team made this a one-of- kind experience. The guides, kayaking, aqua gliding, food, and accommodations were top notch. On the final day we had the mama polar bear and her cub come to say good-bye. This is a beautiful place to see wildlife and experience some of the nicest people on the planet. Well done Lazy Bear!!! Read more Written July 23, 2023
  • Rosemary C 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Lazy Bear Tours I, along with a friend attended the Lazy Bear Polar Bear Tour. We went from November 10 - 16, 2022. We selected Lazy Bear because they were somewhat all inclusive. Pre-night in Manitoba, transport to airport for flight to Churchill, accommodations at the Lazy Bear Lodge in Churchill, a few meals, tours, and a return flight to Churchill with a final night in Winnipeg. We had our own rooms, as we required and our own bathroom. (not always the case with all tours) As far as an organization, they were great. Tour guides were fantastic, they worked very hard, always felt safe. The accommodations were "good", food was ok. Overall, the people who work for Lazy Bear are really terrific. As with any wildlife tour, you never know what you are going to see. We never saw a moving polar bear up close. We saw "binocular bears" and we saw a video of a polar bear from taken by a patron of our sister group, in another vehicle. Binoculars were not provided, you may want to bring them. Dog sledding ride was absolutely fantastic! Not allowed off of arctic buggy, as most all land travel requires a "bear guard". Our guides brought us into town to buy things, which we really appreciated. Not only to pick up that bottle of wine, but to support the local "chatchka" store. I would research what you are looking to do and the time of year that serves you. There were several flights heading north of Churchill that provided tours as well. • DogFriendly90 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Saw Polar Bears in their natural habitat. A wonderful adventure. No problems at all. Saw Polar Bears in their natural habitat. Lazy Bear handled EVERYTHING, All good - no complaints - not one. Worth every penny we paid for the trip. "You" have to remember that you are going to a wilderness area. Anything and Everything can go wrong - max out the trip insurance and then leave the rest to Nature and Lazy Bear. Everything went well for us - I honestly couldn't come up with a whine or complaint if I tried. This company is managed by professionals and the staff are all very fine service oriented people. We just relaxed and enjoyed ourselves. I am going to start saving for the Beluga adventure next. Read more Written November 10, 2022

  • Heathertster 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful staff at Lazy Bear with excellent animal sightings. After five years of planning and five reschedules from Covid, we finally made it. First and foremost, we had a phenomenal experience mostly with Sue but also Melissa for the planning stage. I’ll spare the details of the ups and downs of this trip from circumstances outside everyone’s control, but I will say that Sue and Melissa were so kind, patient and very easy to work with. We finally made it to Churchill this week and wow, everything was just fantastic. The hotel in Winnipeg was wonderful, airport transfer easy and pick up by the lazy bear team in Churchill went very smooth. The lodge is warm, cozy and a perfect place to rejuvenate each night. The food was good, especially the sandwiches and Arctic char. The waitstaff was all really kind. We had really incredible day trips that included a coastline tour (7 polar bears and hundreds of belugas seen), zodiac boat ride to see more belugas, aquagliding that got us at face level in the water with belugas, a visit with Parks Canada to see the fort and an Arctic crawler tour. Deacon was our main tour guide; we appreciated the jokes and that he really wanted to share his hometown with the guests and give everyone a great experience. As a bonus we also saw the northern lights which Heino was “on call” for the night we had them. He pulled together a bus driven by Derick so we could get outside the town and really see a spectacular show. It was the cherry on top of the week. Terrance also was our driver for most of the tours and was really nice too. Rick at the front desk was fun to chat with and full of great energy. In other words, all the staff we interacted with made the whole experience really special and we would recommend Lazy Bear to anyone looking for a trip to Churchill. Read more Written August 11, 2022
  • KrisL0u 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the Best Tours in Churchill... We stayed at Lazy Bear and had mediocre tours. We took two tours from other operators and they were by far our best tours. The lodge is disorganized. They don't have naturalists as guides or even people who can tell you about all the birds, plants, behaviors, weather etc. and all the things that one would expect on a nature tour. They also don't find the bears or belugas as well as the other tours. And they give you so little information it is difficult to know what to pack. For example we were told one tour had dry suits only to get there and they only had wet suits. One packs completely differently for a dry suit than a wetsuit. It's convenient to come here. The lodge is quite nice. The food is quite good. The waitresses are good and the poor folks who at the front desk who try to straighten everything our are very helpful. The lodge rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable. But the tours have lousy guides so if you can go elsewhere if you have the time to arrange it. Read more Written July 26, 2022

Your questions answered.

Find out what is included in your trip and have all your questions answered. We are here to help.

What’s Included

Frequently asked questions, what are the best months to see polar bears.

The peak bear viewing months in Churchill are October and November as the bears wait for the ice to freeze on the Hudson Bay. But you can see the bears and other wildlife (like beluga whales) throughout the summer.

Is a polar bear sighting guaranteed?

The polar bear migration is a special occasion, and it offers visitors a high probability of seeing the bears in the wild. Our specialized tour operators know the landscape extremely well, and will take you to places where bears are commonly spotted. There is no guarantee of a sighting, however.

What is a Tundra Buggy?

A tundra buggy is a large, heated, all-terrain safari vehicle specially designed to travel over taiga and tundra landscape where polar bears live.

How cold does it get in Churchill?

Polar bear viewing season is October and November, and temperatures vary widely, from daytime highs of 6°C (43°F) in October to nightime lows of -11°C (12°F) or colder in November. With windchill it can feel more like -20°C (-4°F). Guests can rent winter gear including boots and warm jackets. Also, keep in mind that on the Tundra Buggy tours you’ll be inside the heated safari vehicle all day.

What if I don't want to bring winter clothing?

No problem! We can arrange for clothing rentals to be waiting for you when you arrive.

Are the polar bear tours suitable for children?

Family friendly tours geared towards kids and adults are available. Ask your vacation advisor for more information on these special trips.

Total solar eclipse April 8, 2024 facts: Path, time and the best places to view

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality.

Scroll down to see the list of U.S. cities where the April 8 total solar eclipse will be visible, the duration of the eclipse in those locations and what time totality will begin, according to GreatAmericanEclipse.com .

"Eclipse Across America," will air live Monday, April 8, beginning at 2 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+ and Hulu as well as network social media platforms.

On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

PHOTO: Tyler Hanson, of Fort Rucker, Ala., watches the sun moments before the total eclipse, Aug. 21, 2017, in Nashville, Tenn.

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. To discover when to see the solar eclipse in totality or the partial eclipse in locations across the U.S. outside of the path, check out NASA's Eclipse Explorer tool .

Eclipse travel

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

PHOTO: People watch a partial solar eclipse from the roof deck at the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge on Aug. 21, 2017 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

Eclipse map, path of totality

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.

Best times, places to view eclipse

Below is a list of some American cities where the April 8 total solar eclipse will be most visible -- pending weather forecasts -- the duration of the eclipse in those locations and what time totality will begin, according to GreatAmericanEclipse.com.

All About the Rare Total Solar Eclipse, Including Where It Occurs and How to See It

The next total solar eclipse in the United States won't occur for another 20 years

day trip to churchill from winnipeg

Prepare for the sky to go dark as the total solar eclipse takes place this April.

Marking the first total solar eclipse since 2017 , the upcoming event will take place across North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada, per NASA .

As the government agency states , a total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely obscuring the face of the Sun. As a result, people in the path of the eclipse will experience a darkened sky (as if it were dawn or dusk).

While there are several different types of eclipses , total solar eclipses in the United States are especially rare. In fact, the next one won't occur for another 20 years.

That being said, you’ll want to make sure you’re completely prepared when the event comes your way.

From how to safely watch to where the path of the total solar eclipse will occur, here’s everything to know.

When is the 2024 total solar eclipse?

Rick Kern/Getty

The total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, 2024. It will be the first total solar eclipse in almost seven years following the total solar eclipse on Aug. 21, 2017.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

The actual time the total solar eclipse takes place will vary based on your location, so be sure to check out NASA’s handy map for exact timing. According to NASA’s website, the total solar eclipse will enter North America in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PDT, and exit North America at the tip of the Newfoundland Coast at 5:16 NDT.

Per NASA, the eclipse will begin over the South Pacific Ocean before crossing North America, passing over Mexico, the United States and Canada.

It will start at Mexico’s Pacific coast, before entering the United States in Texas. From there, it will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. The eclipse will then make its way to Canada in Southern Ontario, and continue through Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia.

The eclipse will wrap up on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

If you’re lucky enough to be in the eclipse’s path, there are a few things you need to know before turning your eyes to the sky. Other than when the moon completely blocks the sun’s face, it is not safe to look directly at the sun without specialized eye protection (including viewing the sun through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope).

To help you prepare for the big event (and keep you and your loved ones safe), you’ll want to purchase a pair of solar eclipse glasses, which are specifically made out of materials that enable safe sun viewing.

"Solar eclipse glasses use lenses that are made of black polymer, a flexible resin infused with carbon particles," according to the Planetary Society's website . "They are about 100,000 times darker than ordinary sunglasses and block nearly all visible light as well as all infrared and ultraviolet light."

For more details on which glasses to purchase , NASA has a resource page with vetted companies that manufacture and sell safe solar viewers and filters for binoculars and telescopes.

After the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, the next total solar eclipse won’t occur for another 20 years. Per NASA, the next one visible in the United States will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Total eclipse guide: When it is, where to watch along the path of totality, how to do it safely and more

S ky-gazers in North America will be treated next week to a total solar eclipse that will briefly turn day into night for tens of millions of people from Mexico to Canada.

The April 8 eclipse will be at least partially visible in all 50 states except Alaska and entirely visible in 13 states from Texas to Maine.

⌚ When is the eclipse happening, exactly?

The timing varies depending on your location (see chart below) but it will begin in Texas shortly after noon local time, in Maine about a quarter after 2 p.m. ET.

🌔🌓🌑🌗🌖 How long will the eclipse last?

For those along the so-called path of totality, the moon will cross in front of the sun for nearly four and a half minutes (268 seconds to be exact), or roughly twice as long as the annular eclipse that occurred back in 2017. As it does, the sky will darken and the sun’s fiery edges, also known as the solar corona, will appear around the eclipsing moon, engulfing the Earth in shadow.

☀️ 🌤️ ⛅ Eclipse weather forecast

With April 8 now within the 10-day forecast window, meteorologists are offering local weather forecasts for total solar eclipse day — though at this stage they are preliminary.

Also see: Eclipse forecast: Where you'll be able to see it — and where viewing could be difficult

👀 How often do you see total solar eclipses?

They're pretty rare. Over the past century, only 13 total solar eclipses have been visible in the United States . And the next one, in Alaska, won’t occur until 2033.

💦 Total eclipse fever

Anticipation for the celestial event is building. Some cities along the path of totality are looking to cash in on the excitement, offering special travel packages to view the eclipse, while other communities are bracing for an influx of eclipse seekers. Airbnb searches along the path of totality have been skyrocketing .

Texas is a prime eclipse destination, with Dallas and Austin both sitting along the path of totality, and San Antonio just outside. In Austin, city officials are expecting the eclipse to bring a million tourists to the area.

🚨 Small towns brace for eclipse traffic

Numerous cities and towns within the path of totality are bracing for an influx of eclipse seeking tourists — and all of the logistical problems that come with it.

In Aroostook County, Maine, shop owners are feeling stressed about the thousands of visitors expected to flock to this remote northern community that borders Canada.

“It’s a little new for us here, so it is stressful,” Lindsay Anderson, manager of Brookside Bakery in Houlton, Maine, told the New York Times .

“Where are 20,000 people going to pee?” wondered Tom Willard, co-owner of Market Square Antiques and Pawn, which is next door to the bakery.

Travis County, Texas, where Austin is located, issued a local disaster declaration ahead of the eclipse, requiring businesses and property owners hosting viewing parties with more than 50 attendees to register with the county.

Officials there are also encouraging residents to stay home on April 8 if they are able, to reschedule any nonurgent appointments for a different day and to put gas in their cars before the eclipse.

Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo, N.Y., are also among the top eclipse-viewing cities, according to AAA.

✏️ Eclipse school closures

From Texas to Maine, hundreds of school districts within the path of totality have already announced they will be closed for the day.

In Texas, the Hays County school district had planned to be open and even purchased enough viewing glasses for all students so they could safely observe the eclipse, but later decided to cancel classes out of safety concerns for students.

Similar decisions were made by school districts in Vermont, where officials have said that up to 200,000 visitors could swarm the Green Mountain State on April 8.

"To put our students and staff even out on the roads there, it seems better just to have them in a place where they're safe and we're not adding to the confusion on the roads," Beth Cobb, superintendent of the Essex-Westford School District, told Vermont Public Radio .

🌎 Eclipse festivals

For communities within the 115-mile-wide path of totality, there are hundreds of eclipse events planned. Among them:

▶ In Rochester, N.Y., the Rochester Museum and Science Center has organized a three-day Eclipse Festival that will feature hands-on activities, live entertainment, speakers, eclipse merchandise, food trucks and more.

▶ In Niagara Falls, N.Y. , the city is partnering with NASA on a series of free eclipse events and exhibitions leading up to the natural phenomenon.

▶ In Dallas, the Sun, Moon, and You Total Solar Eclipse Event at the Cotton Bowl Stadium will feature numerous activities and speakers, including noted astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. Elsewhere, guests of Dallas’s Hôtel Swexan are invited to view the solar eclipse with complimentary glasses and a telescope on its 20th-floor rooftop. The hotel is also hosting a “Breathe Meditation and Wellness” event, where guests can participate in New Moon rituals, meditation and a restorative sound bath.

▶ In Grapetown, Texas , a Hill Country vineyard is offering hot air balloon rides for eclipse viewing from the air.

✈️ Eclipse viewing flights

Several airlines are offering special eclipse viewing flights. Delta has scheduled two, including a “ path-of-totality flight ” that will depart Austin at 12:15 p.m. CT and land in Detroit at 4:20 p.m. ET, timed to give those on board “the best chance of safely viewing the solar eclipse at its peak” — from 30,000 feet.

Southwest and United are offering special eclipse-viewing flights too.

😎 How to view the eclipse safely

It is never safe to look directly at an eclipse without specialized eye protection. Looking at the intense light from the sun even for just a few seconds can cause permanent damage to the retina, the part of the eye directly responsible for vision.

Solar viewing glasses have been selling out online, but don’t fret: You can also view the eclipse through a pinhole projection box you can make with items you probably already have at home. See these safety guidelines for viewing solar eclipses.

And when in doubt, remember: Never look directly at the sun .
