Chronnixx was spellbinding! Amazing vocals, beautiful lyrics, band was crisp. Lovely backdrop of Jamaican films created a tapestry of the Tropics. Only downside was the venue's excruciatingly slow security checks creating an hour long wait to get into the '02 warehouse venue. Im sure this would not have been the case for other acts that have a less 'diverse' fan base... The support act, Hak Baker, was lukewarm at best, having friends hovering on stage in the wings on their phones, was just lame. Take a leaf out of the main act's book and create a better stage presence. Necking a bottle of booze whilst performing ain't rock and roll and showed disregard and disrespect to your audience! Fix up! But loving Chronnixx ALL DAY LONG!

One of my most favorite artists! Feeling so blessed and so fortunate to have had the chance to see him! The show was phenomenal! The place was packed and the crowd diverse. From what I could tell everyone had a super night! Chronixx and Zincfence Redemption certainly did not disappoint! Music for the Soul! His lyrics are inspirational and meaningful! Real talk! Bless up Chronixx and the whole band! Thank you for coming to Chicago!!

The venue itself was perfectly sized for the event. It offered a good menu and a full selection of libations!

Chronixx definitely rocked Somerset House like no other.

The atmosphere was well and truly set by the DJ spinning some reggae classics and Dre Island warming up the stage.

Zinc Fence Redemption (the band) were great, giving high quality backing.

Chronixx himself was on point - his voice, his tunes, comments and command of the stage cemented the fact that I would gladly see him in concert again and highly recommend to any others who love his music or are remotely excited by reggae in general.

Chronixx was so much fun. The energy in the room last night was so great. The show was a late one of course, it was a Saturday night, people were there to party. The openers were good, but Chronixx was on his A-game, getting down to the boogie. It was a really great show, the Fonda is an amazing sounding place. Great time and I would highly recommend him to see! First reggae show of 2017 was a success!

Chronixx is an amazing performer and I am so happy I saw him at 2 previous gigs. I was unable to get a glimpse at this show due to the heavy load of people and I was not tall enough to see over their heads. I would highly recommend his shows but it helps if you have height and do not mind being crammed. Hope to catch him in Jamaica one year out in the open with more space. Maria Rosa

Good start to the show, nice choices of music with a little reggae rock star vibes. Hahaa. Other than that it was great, it had a nice melow start to the concert. He could of stay on stage a little longer. There were people still entering the bowl, but he could of given us some more of that good Chronixx

Jamaican musician Chronixx has ignited a torch in people's hearts the world over and is confidently lighting the path for an entire generation of youths to rediscover roots and culture.

Born Jamar Rolando McNaughton on October 10, 1992, Chronixx was musically nurtured from an early age by his father, dancehall artist Chronicle, and grew up surrounded by the likes of Burro Banton and Gregory Isaacs. His remarkable ascension in the music industry began in the background; harmonizing for artists such as Lutan Fyah and providing production assistance for tracks sung by Popcaan, Konshens and others.

Today, Chronixx is a respected artist in his own right after his career was stimulated by the unfortunate passing of both his blood brother in 2007 and his brother-in-arms, Lil' J.O.E., in 2010. The first EP, Hooked on Chronixx, was released in 2011 and immediately put the budding artist on the radar of music lovers and industry heads alike with 'Start A Fyah,' 'Warrior' and breakout single 'Behind Curtain' standing out as a fan favorites far beyond Jamaican shores

Chronixx Expands His Universe

By Patricia Meschino

Patricia Meschino

Chronixx is playing with his two-year-old daughter in Los Angeles when he picks up the phone for an extended chat with Rolling Stone . “All right, come, let me lift you up,” the Jamaican singer, 29, says to the bubbly toddler when she cries out for daddy. “Do you want something to do?”

“I want my Play-Doh,” she declares.

“Can I answer this last question?” Chronixx asks in response.

“No!” she states emphatically, and so adorably, who could deny her?

“OK, let me give you your Play-Doh,” the reggae star concedes, and his daughter goes on to play contentedly for the next hour of our conversation.

Chronixx has spent the past two years adapting to changing circumstances. At one point, he was planning to release his second album, Dela Splash , in the summer of 2020. In early March of that year, just two weeks before New York City went into lockdown, he held a listening session in midtown Manhattan and shared the first single, “Dela Move,” where he sings over a melancholic trap-dancehall beat.

As 2021 comes to a close, fans are still waiting for Dela Splash — but Chronixx says the pandemic had little to do with the delay. “Really, why I didn’t release the album was because of where I was in the journey of being a father to my daughter,” he says. “It wasn’t what I was expecting, but really, there was nothing I could expect. It was a new feeling, and I was not ready to leave her to do anything. The pandemic was the perfect time for a father to be beside his daughter and also a good time to create.”

Chronixx has become one of the biggest names in reggae by doing things his own way. He releases music on his own imprint — Soul Circle Music, which he co-founded with two of his managers, London-based Pierre Bost and Kingston’s Brendon “Daddi Barnz” Sharpe — instead of working with a major label or an established independent. This approach has led him to some of the biggest festival stages in the world, including both Glastonbury and Coachella.

With much of the music industry scaling back during the pandemic, Chronixx’s extended period at home in Jamaica allowed him time to focus on another task: Signing the first artist other than himself to Soul Circle. Hector “Roots Percussionist” Lewis, the 31-year-old son of the late Jamaican reggae/gospel singer Barbara Jones, has played in Chronixx’s band, Zincfence Redemption, since 2013. His vibrant percussion playing and animated backing vocals, not to mention his energetic dance moves, add texture to the band’s sound, which is anchored in classic one-drop reggae grooves but incorporates contemporary influences into a more progressive blend. “I don’t think of it as signing my first artist,” explains Chronixx. “I think of it as if I have a car and someone needs a lift, I am going to give it to them.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Lewis recorded his forthcoming debut EP, due out in spring or summer 2022, at Skyline Levels, a recording studio and cultural complex in the Jack’s Hill neighborhood, overlooking Kingston, where Chronixx also often works. “Many people are talented but are not at music’s beck and call,” Chronixx reflects. “Hector belongs to music. Sometimes you have to tell him, ‘Bro, it’s too much music.’” He laughs and goes on: “When I was growing up, my mother would tell me that every day, so for me to tell someone else, ‘Bro, too much music, can you stop beating out the scales?’ It’s amazing.”

Lewis crafted the EP’s five songs under the direction of Jamaican producer J.L.L. (Jean-Andre Lowell Lawrence), who recently had one of his beats sampled on Drake’s “Champagne Poetry.”

The first single, “Ups and Downs,” is a funky reggae jam on which Lewis chants simple yet inspirational lyrics like a jazzy mantra: “You can never rise if you never yet fall down.” The video for the song, shot in downtown Kingston and at Skyline Levels, is premiering here.

“In a business that is so cold, so hard to navigate, I give thanks that I met Chronixx. He has always encouraged me, so I thought why wait to record?” Lewis says. “As I was finishing up the project, I knew I could go to Chronixx with it and he would listen to me on a deeper level than just as his band member. I told him, ‘I want you to help me bring the project to the world.’  It is a step I wanted to take, and I know he respects things that show that you are trying to better yourself.”

The son of dancehall singer Chronicle, known for such hits as 1995’s “My God,” Chronixx — born Jamar Rolando McNaughton in Spanish Town, about a 30-minute drive from Kingston — learned from his father how to hold a microphone and perform before an audience. As a high school student and aspiring producer, he reached out via Facebook to Jamaican sing-jay Protoje, 11 years his senior. The confident teenager told Protoje he wanted to work with him, and Protoje invited Chronixx to his house. “I always listen to people, because you never know who you are talking to, so he came over and started to play some songs; then casually, out of nowhere, he started to sing, and I said, ‘You are an artist, bro, not just a producer,’” Protoje told me in a 2018 interview. “He was singing songs like ‘Behind Curtain’ and ‘Warrior,’ which became his earliest hits… I was blown away from that very first day.” In the same interview, Protoje unequivocally stated: “Chronixx is the greatest musical talent I have ever had the opportunity to witness work, and I just hope people appreciate the gift to music that he is.”

Chronixx’s 2011 debut EP, Hooked on Chronixx, featured the dancehall-inflected singles “Behind Curtain,” and “Odd Ras,” the chant-down-Babylon fury of “Warrior” and the exquisite love song “Rain Music.” The EP demonstrated Chronixx’s versatility as a singer and a writer and brought him to the attention of music fans across Jamaica and throughout the Caribbean Diaspora. “Each of these songs did its own thing in its own little way,” Chronixx reflects. His listenership expanded with his late-2012 release Major Lazer Presents: Chronixx & Walshy Fire — Start a Fyah Mixtape , and around this time famed Island Records founder Chris Blackwell proclaimed him “reggae’s next big artist.”

In 2014, Chronixx, then 21, issued his second EP, The Dread and Terrible Project , propelled by the contemporary Rasta reggae anthems “Here Comes Trouble” and “Captured Land.” His appealing blend of roots reggae’s substantial lyrics and dancehall’s rapid-fire rhymes generated stateside interest that exploded with his American television debut on The Tonight Show . Four days after their Fallon performance, Chronixx and Zincfence Redemption pulled a capacity crowd of 5,500 to New York City’s Central Park SummerStage, with Mick Jagger and his daughters in attendance. In July 2017, Chronixx released his debut album, the Grammy-nominated Chronology , whose wide-ranging styles — from the country and gospel underpinnings on the stirring “Legend” to the retro-soul flavored “Black is Beautiful” to the celestial dance influences on the empowering “I Can” — again showed his willingness to experiment and his increasing proficiency as a producer.

Expanding Soul Circle’s roster could be the next step in that evolution. When asked if he looks to any established label as a template, Chronixx chuckles: “I am not big into the music industry to even know. Soul Circle was set up because I was unsigned…. Chris Blackwell has told me inspirational stories about Island Records’ transition from jazz to reggae to hip hop, but Soul Circle is not like Island Records.” He sees his label as more of a family affair: “I have a younger brother, Universal, who is a producer. My wife [singer/songwriter/musician Kelissa McDonald] is an artist. And the talented group of bredren in Zincfence Redemption, if any of them want to make an album, that’s what Soul Circle is for — an initiative to uplift people who are within the circle already.”

Throughout the pandemic, Chronixx worked on an abundance of new music, including an album with his band (although he hasn’t set a release date, and won’t disclose further details) and an instrumental project with Universal and Kelissa. The long-delayed Dela Splash may never be released, but the songs he recorded for it will make their way out to the world, Chronixx promises. He’s already released two more songs from that project in the past year: In March, he dropped “Safe N Sound,” which blasts Jamaica’s political corruption, especially “the guns that are given out to break communities down.” In late August, he released “Freedom Fighter,” a consciousness-raising one-drop reggae track with gorgeous soul influences, which he co-produced with Pantha. On that song, Chronixx shifts from chanted to passionately sung vocals, celebrating his Rastafari way of life and renouncing societal trappings: “ Trod to the mountain and hear when Haile I call yuh name/‘Cause dem will trap you in the city, get you hooked on the pain / Give yuh the money, all the girls, and all the guns, and the fame.”

Rastafari teachings are a major influence on Chronixx’s music, and he often quotes Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I in song lyrics and in conversation. While he hasn’t yet announced any concert dates for 2022, Ethiopia is among the places where he wants to perform when that becomes possible. “ I have been wanting to do shows,” he says. “I tried to do one in Brooklyn in September, and the parts just shifted. Trust me, I would love to do a show in New York City, the U.K., Trinidad, and Antigua, and I can’t wait to go back to Kenya.” He adds that Ethiopia holds a special place for him: “I would love to do a peace concert in Ethiopia, with all the Ethiopian Rastafari artists in the world. Ethiopia needs our music right now, they need our creative people who can show them a blueprint of peace, non-aggression, non-violence. That is one of the things as Rastafari that we know about because of His Majesty.”

When he looks back on his evolution from a self-described teenaged dancehall head to a neo-roots reggae star to making complex, often genre-defying Jamaican music grounded in Rastafari principles, Chronixx sees a path of deepening understanding. “The earlier songs are very caught up in the individual — who he is, who he is not,” he says. “Dancehall artists have to be tough, larger than life, superheroes. They can’t be the same as a country & western type of man or the R&B type of man.”

He laughs as he continues this train of thought: “I would say now I am more on the Willie Nelson side of the spectrum, or more like a Bunny Wailer, Bob Marley, Burning Spear. Reflective and bringing to the forefront the things that people are ashamed to talk about. Like, how are we doing, instead of the escapism mentality for your fans to exit reality.”

Chronixx, 'Chronology'

Cash Cobain on His Hit 'Fisherrr' and What We Can Expect from a Slizzy Summer

See latest videos, charts and news

Chronology , the initial release on Chronixx’s Soul Circle label, distributed by Virgin Records (Universal), will drop on June 30, two months after the conclusion of the 44-date North American leg of the Chronology tour. Boasting several sold-out dates, including three in New York City, the Chronology tour also featured Brooklyn-based selector Max Glazer/Federation Sound, powerful Jamaican singer Kelissa, Chronixx’s father, veteran singer Chronicle (“the man who first taught me how to hold a mic and rock a crowd when I was six”), and on select dates, rising reggae stars Jah9 and Jesse Royal. During a recent interview with Billboard at his lower Manhattan hotel, Chronixx explained his reasons for releasing Chronology after his North American tour’s conclusion. “As you navigate the music industry and the business of entertainment, sometimes you just have to trust your instincts, go with the flow — and releasing the album after the tour is just us going with the flow,” he stated.

Chronology follows Chronixx’s numerous hit singles in the Jamaican and international reggae markets (including “Smile Jamaica” released in 2013 and 2015’s “Spanish Town Rocking,” both included on Chronology ) and several mixtapes, 2012’s Start A Fyah , produced by Major Lazer’s Walshy Fire (which brought initial widespread attention to Chronixx) and 2016’s Roots and Chalice , produced by Max Glazer. “I call Chronology my first album because I love albums; Chronology shows my appreciation for a great body of work by creating, hopefully, what feels like a great body of work,” offers Chronixx, who produced or co-produced the bulk of Chronology ‘s 16 tracks.

Two new singles have already been released: The sultry, retro R&B flavored “Majesty” and the dancehall-fueled “Likes.”  Chronology ‘s third single “Skankin’ Sweet,” produced by French duo Bost & Bim, possesses a richly textured one drop groove over which Chronixx’s remarkably supple vocals — steadily arcing into a guttural cry for spiritual strength — compel the listener to forget their troubles and dance.

“Skankin’ Sweet,” which drops on May 19, debuts here:

Chronology was recorded in studios in Brooklyn, Kingston, London and Chicago, where Chronixx recruited blues guitar legend Donald Kinsey, (whose stellar credits include albums/tours with Bob Marley and Peter Tosh) for the tracks “Country Boy” and “Christina.” The majority of the album’s tracks were mixed at Circle House Studios, Miami and at Manhattan Center, New York City. “A mixture of talent and facilities took me to these various places to create a sound that can sonically cross more borders,” Chronixx observes. “Many great songs are out there that sonically are not as appealing as they could be, that’s what makes a mixing engineer and a proper recording studio so important, otherwise you can just do everything from your yard.”

“I love what Chronixx is doing, it’s not a new style of music but it’s not a rehash of old music, either,” comments Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, whose work with Marley, among other Jamaican acts, helped break reggae internationally in the 1970s. Blackwell signed Chronixx to his Blue Mountain Publishing in 2014; Blue Mountain/Cobalt now handles Chronixx’s publishing. “I signed Chronixx because I was so impressed with the phrasing and timing in his songs. That is something you are born with, it’s not something you can really learn,” Blackwell continued. “Also, I like the way he goes about things; he is very grounded and very gifted.”

Far more adventurous than Chronixx’s previous recordings, Chronology offers a co-mingling of inspirations that have shaped his evolving artistic identity. The country rock flavor and choral backing on the spectacular “Legend” and the ’70s soul inflections on the stirring Rastafari anthem “Selassie Children,” like all of Chronology ‘s tracks, are skillfully interwoven with various Jamaican strands that ultimately expand reggae’s parameters. “We are all influenced by different sounds, some people would rather hide it, and untruthfully stick to one thing, but for me it is all about connecting the dots,” Chronixx acknowledges. “I am proud to have this album called reggae because anyone who can successfully make that mystical reggae sound must be a diligent, bright musician. But I don’t sit and ponder what kind of genre to make or try to contain it because then you won’t experience the spiritual part where the music is making itself.”

Born Jamar Rolando McNaughton , reggae fans are growing more familiar with the young Jamaican reggae-star now known as Chronixx . He’ll kick off his US tour on May 23rd at California Roots Music and Arts Festival before embarking on his Capture Land tour in the US that concludes June 20th.

Chronixx Capture Land US Tour

Here’s what Mystic Revealers’ Billy Wilmot told The Pier of Chronixx: “We have watched with admiration, and a small bit of pride, as Chronixx has developed from the days of his earliest performances at Jamnesia into the top caliber artist he is today. This is something that we knew would happen… His talent is undeniable.”

When first discovering Chronixx, here’s what Jimmy Fallon told his audience on the Tonight Show before having Chronixx perform on the show: “…I was in Jamaica, I was on vacation, at this awesome place called Golden Eye… They play Reggae music through the whole resort. They play this song, ‘Here comes trouble, here comes the danger,’ and I’m like, this is the best song! I said who is this guy, and I Shazamed it, but the app doesn’t recognize… So I went and asked who it was… The guy actually tells me: ‘that’s Chronixx man’, and I go: ‘Chronixsman,’ he says: No, ‘Chron – Icks, Chronixx he has 2 X’s’…So if you want to get into Reggae, new Reggae, he’s awesome.”

Still reeling from the success of his debut album Dread and Terrible , Chronixx is titling his US tour after the 3rd song from Dread and Terrible with “Capture Land” . The tour will stretch across 3 major festivals within 20 cites and 15 states, including the nations Capitol, from May 23rd to June 20th. The Brooklyn based sound system Federation Sound will once again be collaborating with Chronixx as his opening DJ for each show. More dates are being added, including another run to Europe.

From the Southern Wine Route to Saarland - final stage of the Deutschland Tour begins in Annweiler am Trifels

On August 25, the final of the Deutschland Tour starts in Annweiler am Trifels. The last section leads from the town in the Südliche Weinstraße district to Saarbrücken. This means that the Deutschland Tour will visit four federal states this year. From Bavaria via Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, the cycling pros will make their way to Saarland.

The historic town center of Annweiler am Trifels and the Saarland state capital of Saarbrücken are only 70 kilometers apart as the crow flies. After leaving the second oldest city in the Palatinate, the route runs from the Palatinate Forest with many changes of direction and constant ups and downs to the Saarland metropolis. The wonderful landscapes provide the perfect stage to secure overall victory in the Deutschland Tour 2024.

As host of the Deutschland Tour on Sunday, Annweiler am Trifels and the cycling-loving district of Südliche Weinstraße are expecting many guests to visit Trifelsland for this sporting highlight. On August 25, fans can look forward to an exciting finale in the style of the great cycling classics.

Deutschland Tour 2024 starts in Schweinfurt

This year's Deutschland Tour will start in Schweinfurt. This means that the course of Germany's most important cycling race has been defined: the pros will travel from Lower Franconia to Saarbrücken, the capital of Saarland, over five days of racing.

The prologue to the start of the tour will take place in Schweinfurt on August 21. In the past two years, a short urban course has caused a buzz in the starting towns of Weimar and St. Wendel. And it will also be exciting in Schweinfurt when just a few seconds will decide who gets the leader's jersey of the Deutschland Tour 2024 for the first time. On August 22, the first stage of the Deutschland Tour 2024 will begin in the northern Bavarian city.

Sebastian Remelé , Lord Mayor of Schweinfurt, says: "I am delighted that we have been able to bring this sporting event to our beautiful city. Schweinfurt will attract national attention as the venue for the start of the Deutschland Tour 2024."

The bicycle has always played a special role in Schweinfurt. Important bicycle inventions such as the freewheel which still characterize bicycles today, originate from Schweinfurt. And in the history of the Deutschland Tour, the city on the Main also already played a role as host city - most recently in 2006 as the finish of stage 3.

Deutschland Tour 2024 takes place August 21- 25

The date of the Deutschland Tour 2024 has been set. The tour will be held from Wednesday, 21 August, to Sunday, 25 August, next year.

Germany's most important cycling race remains true to its concept and will continue to be held as a five-day stage race in the UCI ProSeries, the competition below the WorldTour. This ensures that, in addition to the Tour de France stars, the best German talents can also take part in their home tour.

Villingen-Schwenningen is the first host city of the Deutschland Tour 2024 to be announced. The city in the southwest of Baden-Württemberg will be the destination of the 3rd stage. The early decision follows a positive trend: interest in the Deutschland Tour is growing. In addition to the 750,000 fans along the route, 6 million viewers watched the live broadcasts on ARD and ZDF four weeks ago - an increase of 20% over last year.

"Cycling is experiencing a momentum in Germany. More participants in the amateur races, more interest in the TV broadcasts and the enormous fan enthusiasm on site show the great potential. As the flagship of German cycling, the Deutschland Tour is helping to shape this trend. And so, the 2024 Tour will once again be an event full of highlights," says Matthias Pietsch , Managing Director of the Gesellschaft zur Förderung des Radsports.

Villingen-Schwenningen will host the Deutschland Tour 2024

The Deutschland Tour 2023 is barely history, and planning for the next edition is already in full swing. Villingen-Schwenningen is the first host of the 2024 Tour. The city in the southwest of Baden-Württemberg will be the finish destination of the 3rd stage. With the finale on Saturday afternoon, the twin city has secured a highlight with many visitors.

The confirmation of the UCI race calendar for the coming season is still pending, but cycling fans from the Black Forest should make a note of August 24, 2024. That Saturday, the Deutschland Tour will make a stop in Villingen-Schwenningen. Located in the heart of Baden-Württemberg, the region will once again become a cycling epicenter and welcome the world's best professionals to the finish of the 3rd stage. According to the dual city, the finish lap will incorporate both districts, Villingen and Schwenningen. The German top stars will travel to VS, the gateway to the Black Forest, with good memories, because this year's German Championships took place in the immediate vicinity with a large attendance.

Van Wilder and de Kleijn celebrate in Bremen, organizers draw positive conclusions

He took over the red jersey on the 1st stage to Merzig and didn't let go until the end: Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal Quick-Step) won the Deutschland Tour 2023. On the final stage over 175.6 kilometers from Hanover to Bremen, the Belgian didn't take any risk and rolled safely with the peloton to the finish, which was lined with thousands of spectators. Arvid de Kleijn (Tudor Pro Cycling) won the stage in a bunch sprint ahead of Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious) and Marius Mayrhofer (Team dsm-firmenich).

The German continental teams with Silas Köch, Jan-Marc Temmen (both Saris Rouvy Sauerland), Tobias Nolde, Dominik Röber (both P&S Benotti) and Vinzent Dorn (Bike Aid) used the flat course of the last stage to present themselves once again. With 27 kilometers to go, all but Nolde were caught up. He held on a little longer but was swallowed at the arrival in Bremen. In the meantime, the peloton was split in two for a few kilometers by cross winds, but this had no effect on the finale outcome.

BERLIN (AP) — A major show of Caspar David Friedrich’s iconic landscapes that marks the 250th anniversary of his birth is opening in Berlin, where he made his breakthrough and where a 1906 exhibition kicked off an enduring revival of interest in the German Romantic master.

The show at the German capital’s Alte Nationalgalerie, which organizers presented on Wednesday ahead of its opening to the public Friday, includes some of Friedrich’s best-known works.

Among them are the two paintings that brought him to fame in 1810, “Monk by the Sea” — depicting a lone figure against the background of a dark sea and looming sky — and “Abbey among the Oaks.” The works were bought by King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia.

Visitors can also look forward to classics such as the dramatic “The Sea of Ice,” “Chalk Cliffs on Rügen” and “The Watzmann,” depicting one of Germany’s highest peaks. The exhibition brings together 115 paintings and drawings by Friedrich, exploring the progress of his career.

Although the paintings are based on painstaking drawings, some of which are part of the exhibition, they “are not a reflection of nature, but are actually visions on the great philosophical questions of human existence,” museum director Ralph Gleis said.

The outer wall of the Stock Exchange has collapsed towards Boersgade, Copenhagen, Thursday, April 18, 2024. A fire raged through one of Copenhagen’s oldest buildings on Tuesday, causing the collapse of the iconic spire of the 17th-century Old Stock Exchange as passersby rushed to help emergency services save priceless paintings and other valuables. (Thomas Traasdahl/Ritzau Scanpix via AP)

Gleis described Friedrich as probably the best-known German painter after Albrecht Dürer.

That wasn’t always the case. Friedrich, who was born in Greifswald in northeastern Germany in 1774 and died in 1840, was largely forgotten in the second half of the 19th century. He returned to public attention thanks to a 1906 exhibition at Berlin’s Nationalgalerie celebrating a century of German art, which contained 93 works by Friedrich and celebrated him as a master of light and atmosphere.

The new show leans in part on that exhibition and features 45 of the works the public in Berlin saw more than a century ago.

Friedrich, who painted at the time of the Napoleonic wars in Europe, has been associated with nationalism. That’s reflected directly in at least one painting, “Rocky Valley,” featuring the tomb of Arminius, a figure from Roman times who was revered as a German national hero.

His work is characterized by an “openness to interpretation” that has repeatedly been exploited, Gleis said, noting that the Nazis “tried to pocket Friedrich.”

That made it a little difficult for Friedrich’s work to gain attention after World War II. The English-speaking art world helped revive interest in him as a “universal artist,” Gleis added.

Friedrich “created pictures of longing and hope, but also of doubt,” curator Birgit Verwiebe told a news conference.

The Berlin show is one of three partly overlapping major exhibitions in Germany to mark the 250th anniversary of Friedrich’s birth, with museums in Berlin, Hamburg and Dresden collaborating. The first, in Hamburg, closed at the beginning of this month after attracting huge numbers of visitors. An exhibition in Dresden will open in August.

The German museums will support a later exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York “to share our Friedrich with the world,” Gleis said.

The exhibition at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin’s neoclassical Museum Island complex, titled “Caspar David Friedrich. Infinite Landscapes,” runs from Friday until Aug. 4. The museum has extended its opening times to deal with high anticipated demand.

BIG BATTLES

The track’s two premier events are back.

In August, even more money is on the line in the TEKTON Battle at Berlin 250. While no names have been announced for either race, fans have grown to see some of the best in NASCAR, including Kyle Busch. The races have also brought out drivers that eventually make their way into the NASCAR ranks, like Josh Berry, Jesse Love and Portage native Carson Hocevar.

There are a number of other touring series that will be back at Berlin this season. For the third year in a row, the track will host the third annual ISMA/MSS Great Lakes Classic, a back-to-back supermodified weekend that sees some of the fastest cars in short-track racing zoom around the oval.

The supermodifieds have provided exciting action over the years at Berlin, showcasing high speeds and entertaining racing. Grand Rapids native Johnny Benson Jr. has raced in the series over the last few years, and could be in the lineup for the back-to-back nights of racing on July 12 and 13.

Also, winged and non-wing sprint cars will make multiple stops in West Michigan once again. The Must-See Racing Sprints will make their season debut on May 18, along with another visit on Aug. 10. The 500 Sprint Car Tour will be back touring with the Kenyon Midget Series. Both will be at Berlin on June 8 and Aug. 24.

One of the most famous divisions will be coming back to Berlin this summer, as the Outlaw Late Models will be racing on July 6. Outlaws were a staple in Marne for decades, seeing local greats Ross Meeuwsen, Tom Thomas, Randy Sweet and Fred Campbell all win track championships in the past.

The Ohio Wheelman Superstocks and Modifieds will return to Berlin for the second straight season on June 15, as well as the National Compact Touring Series making visits on May 4, June 15 and July 20.

Dwarf cars are expected to make their debut this season. The machines are similar to midgets, with more of a stock car racing body. They will hop on the track on May 18 and also make appearances on July 20 and Aug. 17.

HOME-GROWN EXCITEMENT

Not to forget, but the weekly series at Berlin are always known to bring entertaining action every Saturday night.

The TEKTON Super Late Models have a number of competitors that are looking to challenge reigning champion Brian Campbell for the title. 2022 champion Evan Shotko, of Coopersville, who is tied with Campbell for the most feature wins in the division, won five of the nine features he raced in last season. Sparta natives Andrew Scheid and Austin Hull each have their sights of finishing near the top.

The Model Coverall Limited Late Models sure had a rambunctious 2023 season. From big wrecks to exciting finishes, the series had many fans jumping out of their seats. With last year’s winner, Tyler Rycenga, making the jump to Super Late Models, it opens the door for 2021 champion Josh Frye to jump back to the top of the podium. Other track veterans, including all-time wins leader Tim DeVos, are back to cause a stir.

Maybe one of the most competitive divisions is the Betten Baker Sportsman Series. Every week, it seemed like the drivers found a way to have tight racing throughout each of their features. Defending champion Brian Thome and 2022 series winner Kevin Ford will be shooting for another championship in the series, while the Holtlzander brothers, Ryan, Corey and Dennis, hope to stay in the hunt for a championship, barring they stay out of each other’s way.

The Auto Value 4-Cylinders are back, with Justin Roelofs hoping to defend his first track championship. However, he will be challenged by the father-son duo of Nathan and Don McNabb, as well as former champion Tom McCarthy III.

Also returning to Berlin in 2024 at the Vintage Racing Organization of America Modifieds and the Good Humor Mini-Wedges. The VROAs are scheduled to make their season debut on May 4, with the Mini-Wedges in action on April 27.

LEADING OFF

The racing gets underway this Saturday night with the 12th annual Icebreaker. The Super Late Models highlight a lineup that features the Limited Late Models, Sportsmans and 4-Cylinders.

The green flag on the 2024 season will drop at 4 p.m. ET, and c an be streamed on FloRacing .
