Hello KSandyman33, Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community. My name is Eunice and I'm happy to help. I am sorry you are experiencing this problem. Do you experience this issue with Teams only? Or also with other applications on your mobile? You can try to troubleshoot the issue with your Poly Voyager Focus headset and Teams: 1. Check Teams settings: Ensure that the headset is selected as the audio device in Teams settings. 2. Check Bluetooth connection: Verify that the headset is properly connected to your desktop via Bluetooth. 3. Check headset settings: Ensure that the answer call button is enabled in the Poly headset settings. 4. Update Teams: Ensure that Teams is updated to the latest version. 5. Restart Teams and headset: Try restarting both Teams and the headset to see if that resolves the issue. 6. Check for conflicts: If you're using other audio devices, try disconnecting them to see if they're causing conflicts. 7. Use Teams on the web to see if you experience this issue. Let me know if you need more help. Regards, Eunice

Thanks for your feedback.

Hey Eunice, I did confirm all settings are correct, enabled and updated. As well I only have my headphones as an audio device through my laptop. This issue still happened after trying the website version of Teams. I was able to use the headphones to answer a call when using my mobile device and logging into Teams through my mobile device.

Thank you for that advice though!

Poly Voyager Focus 2: If it ain’t broke, improve it anyway!

Poly Voyager Focus 2: If it ain’t broke, improve it anyway!

Poly Voyager Focus 2

With hybrid work now the new normal (that is, working from just about anywhere), there is a huge need for technology to be able to shut out the world around us for a time and allow us to work in a little bubble; to create a space where we can work distraction-free.

voyager focus series

We see it with virtual backgrounds in our web meetings and advanced headsets like  the Poly Voyager Focus 2  that both actively cancel out noisy environments for us and fellow participants when on a call.

Poly says Voyager Focus 2 comes with a host of revisions that improve the formula that made its predecessor so good. So let’s dive in and check it out.

Design & Comfort.

I’m generally a fan of the Voyager Focus 2 when it comes to design. It’s very light, compact and feels quite sturdy. The headband is a flexible metal and there is a nice mix of matt and textured plastics. Thankfully, the glossy plastic is only on the dock as it does have the tendency to show fingerprints.

voyager focus series

My last two weeks have been spent flying on business with nothing more than a tightly packed messenger bag that included a five hundred page novel, Laptop, Travel Headphones and the Voyager 2’s bundled in a nifty neoprene carry bag. Safe to say, they’ve lived to tell the tale.

However, the Voyager Focus 2 loses a point for the micro USB charging socket; I think micro USB has run its course, and it would be nice to see USB-C adopted.

Poly’s formula for comfort was a standout in its previous model, and that hasn’t changed. If it ain’t broke, right? The headphone pads are soft, cool to the touch and breathable. I was able to comfortably wear them for hours at a time without feeling the need to take them off.

Technology & Usability

The Voyager Focus 2 hasn’t been left wanting for technology either. There is a raft of new features which improve connectivity, battery life and user experience.

As we’ve come to expect with Poly, it’s so simple to set up. Plug the included BT700 dongle in, turn on the Voyager Focus 2, and your PC will take care of the rest with setting up complete in under 10 seconds. With native support for all the major collaboration platforms out there such as Teams and Webex, you’ll be up and running before you know it. If you do get stuck, there is a quick reference guide card complete with a Q code link.

Bluetooth 5.1 has been introduced, offering improved transmission speeds and sound quality. It also lowers energy consumption and increases range.

Poly has also beefed up the battery life, meaning you’ll get up to 19 hours of use off one two hour charge and about 40 hours of listening time if you’re using it for media like music.

voyager focus series

In addition to this, Poly’s propeller heads have introduced a suite of acoustic aids and sensors which they combine to call the “focus zone”. It entails three levels of active noise cancelling, acoustic fence technology (suppresses background noise for your listeners), and dynamic mute alert that lets you know if you’re speaking while muted. Other human-centred engineering features include the ability to answer a call by just placing the headset on your head. You can place them on mute by simply putting them back down on the table or swivelling the microphone boom back to the vertical. Beautiful.

voyager focus series

The only minor bugbear was the ability to pause what you’re listening to when putting the headset down. There is a delay of a few seconds, so you may find yourself having to rewind five or so seconds to get that detail back.

Another feature that Poly has considered is a “do not disturb” light that flashes when you’re on a call to let others know not to interrupt you. It sounds like an excellent idea in principle, but how do people around you know what the flashing light means? You may need to put up a sign at your cubical that says, “if the light is a flashin’, don’t come to a’knockin'” or something to that effect.

Sound Quality: Calls

Once you’ve used a headset like the Voyager Focus 2, you’ll wonder how you worked without it. It really does make life easier, switching on full active noise cancelling in a noisy office environment almost teleports you into a closed meeting room, it’s that effective.

voyager focus series

The voice clarity is clear and lifelike. The quality of the microphone too, did well to suppress the noisy office environment with my colleague’s feedback

Sound Quality: Media

The Voyager Focus 2 surprised me on this test, particularly with music.

Given that audiophile-grade sound probably wasn’t a primary goal when the engineers set out to design this headset, they’ve done an outstanding job tuning them for a wide range of music. For this test, I listened to Sons Of The East’s “You Might Think” and several tracks from the No Time Die soundtrack by Hans Zimmer.

voyager focus series

The soundstage is impressive, and there is no distortion across the range. Hans Zimmer uses rumbling bass effects in many of his tracks, and the Voyager Focus 2 didn’t break a sweat. Harmonica and Acoustic Guitar feature heavily in “You Might Think” from Sons Of The East, and Voyager Focus 2 lets those instruments in the higher frequency range shine. There is a good separation between the instruments and vocals to create an excellent listening experience- a good portion of detail and no muddiness. This was not what I expected for a headset that’s primary purpose is web meetings—props to the engineers at Poly for not neglecting this. I wouldn’t feel like I was losing out by using these just out of convenience as a music lover. Couple this sound quality with the active noise cancelling, and you can happily disappear for hours into your work in a bubble of serenity. Just be forewarned; if you’re working from home with your spouse in the house, let them know you’re not ignoring them; it’s just that the active noise cancelling on the Voyager Focus 2 is pretty darn good. If it’s this good with music, it goes without saying that it’s good with other forms of media too.

The Poly Voyager Focus 2 strikes an excellent balance between work and play, which is fitting given the seismic shift in how many of us will work moving into the future. The battery life is strong, and as mentioned, the sound quality and active noise cancelling en pointe.

voyager focus series

Is this a headset I would recommend? Yes. Is it one I would buy? Yes- it’s on the shopping list, actually. Don’t forget to chat to your tax accountant about claiming it back for work use!

Many thanks to Poly for the loan of the Poly Voyager Focus 2 for this review!

Star Trek Found A Vulcan Way To Honor Majel Barrett Roddenberry

I'm mad star trek: prodigy made me like chakotay, wesley crusher’s star trek traveler powers explained.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Prodigy season 2

  • Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 brings back the young voice cast from season 1, along with fan-favorite characters from Star Trek: Voyager and The Next Generation.
  • Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 is streaming on Netflix.
  • The story follows a group of alien teenagers who escape a slave world and learn the values of Starfleet under the guidance of Hologram Janeway, eventually saving Starfleet and the galaxy.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 brings back season 1's entire young voice cast as well as fan-favorite legacy characters from Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: The Next Generation . Created by Kevin and Dan Hageman, Star Trek: Prodigy now streams on Netflix, with season 1's 20 episodes as well as season 2's 20 episodes all available to watch as of July 1, 2024.

Star Trek: Prodigy began in the late 24th century Delta Quadrant when six alien teenagers escaped the slave world of Tars Lamora and commandeered the USS Protostar. The Protostar's new crew came under the tutorship of Hologram Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and learned the values of Starfleet. As Prodigy season 1 unfolded, it revealed a complex time travel plot where the Vau N'Akat from an alternate 25th-century timeline sought to destroy Starfleet in the 24th century.

With the help of Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), the crew of the USS Protostar saved Starfleet and the galaxy. Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 sends the aspiring Starfleet cadets on another time-travel adventure, as they search for the missing Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran) and try to repair the altered timeline. Here is the cast of Star Trek: Prodigy and who voices each character.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3 - Everything We Know

Netflix has the option to order Star Trek: Prodigy season 3. Here's what we know about the young Starfleet crew of the USS Protostar's return.

18 Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway & Hologram Janeway

Voiced by kate mulgrew.

Kate Mulgrew does double duty in Star Trek: Prodigy by playing Hologram Janeway, the USS Protostar's virtual training protocol, before the actual Admiral Kathryn Janeway joined the series. After chasing the Protostar across the Delta Quadrant in Star Trek: Prodigy season 1, Vice Admiral Janeway got to know the young crew of the Protostar and realized they were Starfleet material.

Admiral Janeway makes the kids her warrant officers as she mounts a new mission to rescue the stranded Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran) from an alternate future in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2. Admiral Janeway brings the Protostar kids aboard the USS Voyager-A, doing her best to keep them safe, appease the higher-ups at Starfleet, and save the galaxy yet again. Before reprising her iconic role from Star Trek: Voyager, Kate Mulgrew also starred in Orange Is The New Black and Mr. Mercedes.

17 Dal R'El

Voiced by brett gray.

17-year-old Dal was the self-appointed leader and Captain of the USS Protostar's crew. In Star Trek: Prodigy season 1, Dal learns he is genetically engineered, and his body consists of DNA from multiple species, giving him myriad abilities. Unfortunately, Dal's status as an Augment is a barrier against his joining Starfleet Academy since eugenics is banned by the United Federation of Planets.

A cocky maverick with a good heart, Dal is learning to be a leader, and he has a sweet closeness with Gwyndala (Ella Purnell). Dal grows a lot throughout Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, realizing that he cannot become a great leader overnight. When Dal's actions alter the past and endanger Gwyn's life, the young Starfleet hopeful realizes he still has a lot to learn. Brett Gray previously starred in the Netflix series On My Block, and he appeared in Chicago P.D.

16 Gywndala

Voiced by ella purnell.

Gwyn is the 17-year-old daughter of the Diviner (John Noble), but she rebelled against her father and his twisted plan to destroy Starfleet. At the end of Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 , Gwyndala chose to leave her friends and Starfleet Academy and travel to the Vau N'Akat homeworld of Solum to prevent the tragic future that happens after Starfleet makes First Contact.

In Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, Gwyn realizes that Ascencia (Jameela Jamil) has already convinced much of Solum not to trust Starfleet.

As Gwyn struggles to connect with her people, she eventually reaches out to Ilthuran, the man her father was in the past before he became the Diviner. Gwyn's very existence becomes a paradox, and Dal and the rest of the Protostar crew spend much of the season trying to save her by repairing the past. Ella Purnell is a British actress best known for Fallout and Yellowjackets, as well as Sweetbitter and Army of the Dead.

Star Trek: Prodigy’s Ella Purnell: Where You’ve Seen & Heard Gwyn Actress Before

Ella Purnell voices Gwyndala in Star Trek: Prodigy, but the British actress has also appeared in popular TV series and feature films.

15 Rok-Tahk

Voiced by rylee alazraqui.

Rok-Tahk is a young Brikar who initially is assigned as the USS Protostar's Security Chief because of her size and strength. But sweet young Rok-Tahk reveals a genius for sciences, and she takes on a more suitable position as Science Officer. Rok-Tahk hopes to apply her love of sciences at Starfleet Academy, and her initial experiments are incredibly promising.

In the Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 premiere, Rok-Tahk revealed she had found a way to prevent Tribbles from breeding so rapidly.

Rok-Tahk proves vital to the Protostar crew's mission to rescue Chakotay and repair the damaged timeline. Although she initially refuses to defy Admiral Janeway's orders, she later gets caught up in the adventure with her friends anyway. With her infectious excitement and passion for science, Rok-Tahk remains one of Star Trek: Prodigy's most endearing characters. Star Trek: Prodigy is Rylee Alazraqui's first voiceover acting role.

Voiced by Angus Imrie

A noncorporeal, genderless, and energy-based lifeform, Zero wears a containment suit and begins Star Trek: Prodigy being hunted by the Diviner and Drednok. This is because Zero is a Medusan, a species first introduced on Star Trek: The Original Series. Zero is the troubleshooting brains of the Protostar crew, and Starfleet gave him an upgrade of his containment suit at the end of Star Trek: Prodigy season 1.

Despite his upgraded suit, Zero longs for the ability to experience physical sensations like taste and touch, and he gets that chance in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2. Zero begins to develop an adorable attachment to Star Trek: Prodigy newcomer, Maj'el (Michaela Dietz). Angus Imrie is a British actor who played Prince Edward in The Crown and starred in Fleabag and War of the Worlds.

13 Jankom Pog

Voiced by jason mantzoukas.

A 16-year-old Tellarite, Jankom Pog is a gruff but ingenious engineer. Jankom didn't know much about his race, the Tellarites, and upon learning they are founding members of the Federation, he came to believe he is Starfleet royalty. Throughout Star Trek: Prodigy seasons 1 and 2, Jankom Pog keeps the Protostar running, often finding unconventional solutions to engineering problems.

When Dal, Jankom, and Maj'el find themselves imprisoned with Chakotay on Solum in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, Jankom proves vital in helping them escape . The young Tellarite also helps build Zero another new containment suit after his corporeal body begins to degrade. Jankom managed to give Zero's new suit the ability to feel. Jason Mantzoukas is an actor and comedian who appeared in Parks and Recreation , The Good Place, and Infinite.

Voiced by Dee Bradley Baker

Murf began as a friendly purple alien blob, but he evolved into a more humanoid form after Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 revealed him to be a Mellanoid slime worm. The adorable Murf is apparently indestructible, speaks no known language, and communicates with a series of sound effects, but he has also saved the USS Protostar more than once.

Murf continues to be useful and adorable in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, providing security for his Protostar friends and communicating with Traveler Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton). As the Protostar kids try to learn what Wesley told Murf, they put the little slime worm into the USS Voyager-A's Cetaceaon Ops whale tank , which reveals yet another form for Murf. Dee Bradley Baker is a prolific voiceover actor who has starred in numerous video games and animated series like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Star Wars: The Bad Batch .

11 The Diviner AKA Ilthuran

Voiced by john noble.

The Diviner was the ruthless ruler of Tars Lamora, where he enslaved countless alien youths as he searched for the USS Protostar. A Vau N'Akat time traveler, he ultimately placed Gwyndala, his daughter and "progeny," above his diabolical plan to destroy Starfleet, which saw him murdered by Asencia. Despite the Diviner's death, John Noble returned in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 as Ilthuran, the man the Diviner was before the downfall of his people.

John Noble In Star Trek: Where You've Seen & Heard Prodigy's Diviner Actor Before

Fringe and Lord of the Rings actor John Noble voices the Diviner, also known as Ilthuran in Star Trek: Prodigy.

In the 24th century, Ilthuran was an astronomer who dreamed of other worlds. When Gwyn visited Solum in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, she revealed herself as Ilthuran's future daughter and he helped save her life after Ascencia beat her in Va'Lu'Rah. John Noble is a legendary Australian actor best known for starring in Fringe , Sleepy Hollow , and DC's Legends of Tomorrow .

10 Asencia AKA The Vindicator

Voiced by jameela jamil.

Known as The Vindicator, Asencia was another Vau N'Akat who time-traveled from the 25th century to destroy Starfleet. Asencia posed as a Trill Ensign aboard the USS Dauntless before she revealed her true nature. Asencia failed in her plot, but she escaped with Drednok and returned in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, having gained the trust of Solum's leading council prior to Gwyn's visit.

After winning the duel against Gwyn, Ascencia urged her people to prepare for war with the Federation. She captured the Traveler Wesley Crusher , using the knowledge within his mind to build technology that far surpassed anything the Vau N'Akat should have. Ascencia planned to attack the Federation but was ultimately thwarted by the USS Voyager-A and the Protostar. Jameela Jamil starred in The Good Place and Marvel's She-Hulk .

Voiced by Jimmi Simpson

Drednoks are sentient artificially intelligent lifeforms created by the Vau N'Akat. When the Diviner and the Vindicator were sent back to the past, they were each accompanied by a Drednok. In Star Trek: Prodigy season 1, the Diviner's Drednok is a sinister and deadly piece of technology that serves as his unstoppable robotic enforcer.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 introduces a new, benign version of a Drednok known as Lorekeeper, who serves in the Vau N'Akat library. A Drednok piloted a new Vau N'Akat warship that attempted to destroy Voyager-A, and Ascencia later commanded several Drednoks in the Battle of Solum in 2384. Jimmi Simpson has a prolific acting career, but he may be best known for starring in Westworld .

8 Maj'el

Voiced by michaela dietz.

Vulcan fourth-year Starfleet cadet Maj'el joined the cast of Star Trek: Prodigy for season 2. As a member of Starfleet Academy's elite Nova Squadron , Maj'el and her friends initially looked down on the Protostar crew, but the Vulcan teenager learned her destiny is intertwined with Dal R'El and his friends. With her Vulcan logic and surprisingly big heart, Maj'el helped the Protostar kids throughout their adventures, becoming particularly close to Zero. Michaela Dietz has voiced characters on Barney, Steven Universe, and The Ghost and Molly McGee.

Maj'el is a descendant of T'Pau (Celia Lovsky) from Star Trek: The Original Series, as confirmed by Star Trek: Prodigy 's executive producers/

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 honors Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, the First Lady of Star Trek, with a touching and unexpected Vulcan tribute.

7 Captain Chakotay

Voiced by robert beltran.

Captain Chakotay was the original Captain of the USS Protostar, which launched with a mission to go to the Delta Quadrant to "clean up the messes" the USS Voyager left behind. After accidentally traveling to an alternate 25th-century future, Chakotay has been stranded on Solum after he sent the Protostar back in time to keep the ship safe from the Vau N'Akat. Chakotay plays a larger role in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, as Dal and his friends eventually find the Captain imprisoned on Solum.

However, when the Protostar kids help Chakotay escape, they inadvertently alter the past, as Chakotay travels back in time with the Protostar. With Chakotay piloting the Protostar, the ship never made it to Tars Lamora, as Chakotay chose to maroon himself and the ship on the inhospitable planet of Ysida. After ten years, Dal and his friends find a broken Chakotay on Ysida, and they inspire him to return to Starfleet with them. Robert Beltran also starred in Big Love.

Star Trek: Prodigy actually managed to do something I thought was impossible ... they made me like Voyager's Chakotay.

6 The Doctor

Voiced by robert picardo.

Thanks to a portable holo-emitter, The Doctor, the USS Voyager's Emergency Medical Hologram , is now free to travel independently. In Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, Admiral Janeway places her young warrant officers under the care of The Doctor, who serves as their new mentor aboard the USS Voyager-A.

The Doctor continues to write his holo-novels, often going on long spiels about his complicated plots. The EMH found new inspiration when he returned to the field for the first time in a long time to help mentor the young heroes of the USS Protostar. Robert Picardo also starred in Stargate: Atlantis and Dickinson.

5 Wesley Crusher

Voiced by wil wheaton.

Deciding to abandon his Starfleet career on Star Trek: The Next Generation , Wesley joined the mysterious Travelers. After a brief appearance in Star Trek: Picard season 2, Wesley Crusher returned in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 to help the USS Protostar crew fix Star Trek 's broken paradox Prime timeline. Wes sends cryptic messages and hints to Gwyn and Murf before finally revealing himself and using his powerful abilities to point Dal and his friends in the right direction.

As a Traveler, Wes uses the power of thought to manipulate time and space, and he works throughout Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 to make sure events play out as they are supposed to. In Star Trek: Prodigy season 2's finale, Wesley reunites with his mother, Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), and meets his half-brother Jack. Wil Wheaton was a recurring guest star on The Big Bang Theory and has done a lot of voice-over work for animated shows and video games.

Wesley Crusher became a Traveler at the end of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 reveals Wes' full abilities.

4 Admiral Edward Jellico

Voiced by ronny cox.

Captain Edward Jellico first appeared in the Star Trek: The Next Generation two-parter , "Chain of Command," where he stepped in to command the USS Enterprise-D while Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) went on a covert mission. In Star Trek: Prodigy season 1, Admiral Janeway contacted Admiral Jellico to request permission to pursue the Protostar into the Neutral Zone, but Jellico denied her request.

In Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, Janeway went against Jellico's orders on multiple occasions, continuing the search for Chakotay and working to send the Protostar back into the past. At the end of Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, Admiral Jellico assessed the tremendous damage to Starfleet inflicted by the Mars Attack of 2385. Ronny Cox has appeared in many films and television shows, including Deliverance, Robocop, and Stargate SG-1.

3 Dr. Beverly Crusher

Voiced by gates mcfadden.

Gates McFadden's Dr. Beverly Crusher popped up in two episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy season 2. When Admiral Janeway learned of Wesley Crusher's involvement in the plot to restore the proper timeline, Janeway contacted Dr. Crusher for any insight she could offer. Beverly was apparently hard to track down, and couldn't offer much about her son, as she hadn't seen him in years.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 established Dr. Crusher left the USS Enterprise-E, and she is living on Cor Coroli V in Star Trek: Prodigy season 2.

After restoring the proper timeline and saving the multiverse, Wesley stopped by to visit his mother in the Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 finale. Wes didn't know how long he would be able to stay, but he did get to meet his younger brother, Jack. Gates McFadden has appeared in episodes of NCIS and X-Men '97 .

2 Captain Thadiun Okona

Voiced by billy campbell.

Captain Okona, a rogue freighter captain, first appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 2, episode 4, "The Outrageous Okona." With his roguish good looks and ability to charm almost anyone, Okona made quite an impression. Okona was also briefly seen in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 before he returned in Star Trek: Prodigy .

By 2384, Okona was working as a smuggler, and although he helped the Protostar crew initially, he abandoned them at the first sign of trouble. In Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, Chakotay and the Protostar kids encountered an alternate universe version of Okona raiding the derelict USS Voyager-A after the Living Construct had destroyed Starfleet. Billy Campell starred in The Rocketeer and The 4400.

Read's defense attorneys argued O'Keefe was involved in some sort of physical altercation inside the Albert home that led to his death, and that police and others involved conspired against Read to frame her for the crime.

The case drew intense attention, including crowds of people supporting Read gathering each day outside the courthouse. Some of them were drawn to the case by Holden blogger Aidan "Turtleboy" Kearney, who has promoted the defense's conspiracy allegations while assailing the prosecution witnesses.

Earlier this month, a mistrial was declared . Since then, prosecutors have said they plan to retry Read for the murder of O'Keefe.

Netflix announced the documentary will focus on the days leading up to O'Keefe's death.

The documentary does not yet have a title and is currently in production with Sandpaper Films. It will be co-directed by Danielle Johnson and Rob Miller.

“The team feels immensely privileged to be bringing this important series to a Netflix global audience,” the co-directors said in a statement . “It is a case that has garnered a huge amount of public attention and has far-reaching implications. We are also mindful that this is a hugely sensitive case and we are determined to treat all those involved with the respect and consideration they deserve.”

Here’s How AI Is Changing NASA’s Mars Rover Science

Your browser cannot play the provided video file(s).

In this time-lapse video of a test conducted at JPL in June 2023, an engineering model of the Planetary Instrument for X-ray Lithochemistry (PIXL) instrument aboard NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover places itself against a rock to collect data. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech Full Image Details

Artificial intelligence is helping scientists to identify minerals within rocks studied by the Perseverance rover.

Some scientists dream of exploring planets with “smart” spacecraft that know exactly what data to look for, where to find it, and how to analyze it. Although making that dream a reality will take time, advances made with NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover offer promising steps in that direction.

For almost three years, the rover mission has been testing a form of artificial intelligence that seeks out minerals in the Red Planet’s rocks. This marks the first time AI has been used on Mars to make autonomous decisions based on real-time analysis of rock composition.

The software supports PIXL (Planetary Instrument for X-ray Lithochemistry), a spectrometer developed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. By mapping the chemical composition of minerals across a rock’s surface, PIXL allows scientists to determine whether the rock formed in conditions that could have been supportive of microbial life in Mars’ ancient past.

Two name plates mounted on the Mars Perseverance rover's robotic arm are visible in this composite image, made from photos taken by the rover's left Navcam on Sol 12 of its mission (March 2, 2021).

PIXL, the white instrument at top left, is one of several science tools located on the end of the robotic arm aboard NASA’s Perseverance rover. The Mars rover’s left navcam took the images that make up this composite on March 2, 2021.

Called “adaptive sampling,” the software autonomously positions the instrument close to a rock target, then looks at PIXL’s scans of the target to find minerals worth examining more deeply. It’s all done in real time, without the rover talking to mission controllers back on Earth.

“We use PIXL’s AI to home in on key science,” said the instrument’s principal investigator, Abigail Allwood of JPL. “Without it, you’d see a hint of something interesting in the data and then need to rescan the rock to study it more. This lets PIXL reach a conclusion without humans examining the data.”

Data from Perseverance’s instruments, including PIXL, helps scientists determine when to drill a core of rock and seal it in a titanium metal tube so that it, along with other high-priority samples , could be brought to Earth for further study as part of NASA’s Mars Sample Return campaign .

voyager focus series

This image of a rock target nicknamed “Thunderbolt Peak” was created by NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover using PIXL, which determines the mineral composition of rocks by zapping them with X-rays. Each blue dot in the image represents a spot where an X-ray hit.

Adaptive sampling is not the only application of AI on Mars. About 2,300 miles (3,700 kilometers) from Perseverance is NASA’s Curiosity, which pioneered a form of AI that allows the rover to autonomously zap rocks with a laser based on their shape and color. Studying the gas that burns off after each laser zap reveals a rock’s chemical composition. Perseverance features this same ability, as well as a more advanced form of AI that enables it to navigate without specific direction from Earth. Both rovers still rely on dozens of engineers and scientists to plan each day’s set of hundreds of individual commands, but these digital smarts help both missions get more done in less time.

“The idea behind PIXL’s adaptive sampling is to help scientists find the needle within a haystack of data, freeing up time and energy for them to focus on other things,” said Peter Lawson, who led the implementation of adaptive sampling before retiring from JPL. “Ultimately, it helps us gather the best science more quickly.”

Using AI to Position PIXL

AI assists PIXL in two ways. First, it positions the instrument just right once the instrument is in the vicinity of a rock target. Located at the end of Perseverance’s robotic arm, the spectrometer sits on six tiny robotic legs, called a hexapod. PIXL’s camera repeatedly checks the distance between the instrument and a rock target to aid with positioning.

Never Miss a Discovery

Temperature swings on Mars are large enough that Perseverance’s arm will expand or contract a microscopic amount, which can throw off PIXL’s aim. The hexapod automatically adjusts the instrument to get it exceptionally close without coming into contact with the rock.

“We have to make adjustments on the scale of micrometers to get the accuracy we need,” Allwood said. “It gets close enough to the rock to raise the hairs on the back of an engineer’s neck.”

Making a Mineral Map

Once PIXL is in position, another AI system gets the chance to shine. PIXL scans a postage-stamp-size area of a rock, firing an X-ray beam thousands of times to create a grid of microscopic dots. Each dot reveals information about the chemical composition of the minerals present.

Minerals are crucial to answering key questions about Mars. Depending on the rock, scientists might be on the hunt for carbonates, which hide clues to how water may have formed the rock, or they may be looking for phosphates, which could have provided nutrients for microbes, if any were present in the Martian past.

There’s no way for scientists to know ahead of time which of the hundreds of X-ray zaps will turn up a particular mineral, but when the instrument finds certain minerals, it can automatically stop to gather more data — an action called a “long dwell.” As the system improves through machine learning, the list of minerals on which PIXL can focus with a long dwell is growing.

“PIXL is kind of a Swiss army knife in that it can be configured depending on what the scientists are looking for at a given time,” said JPL’s David Thompson, who helped develop the software. “Mars is a great place to test out AI since we have regular communications each day, giving us a chance to make tweaks along the way.”

When future missions travel deeper into the solar system, they’ll be out of contact longer than missions currently are on Mars. That’s why there is strong interest in developing more autonomy for missions as they rove and conduct science for the benefit of humanity.

More About the Mission

A key objective for Perseverance’s mission on Mars is astrobiology , including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet’s geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith (broken rock and dust).

Subsequent NASA missions, in cooperation with ESA (European Space Agency), would send spacecraft to Mars to collect these sealed samples from the surface and return them to Earth for in-depth analysis.

The Mars 2020 Perseverance mission is part of NASA’s Moon to Mars exploration approach, which includes Artemis missions to the Moon that will help prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet.

JPL, which is managed for NASA by Caltech in Pasadena, California, built and manages operations of the Perseverance rover.

Here’s why receiver Tyreek Hill is No. 1 on our Miami Dolphins’ Top 20 players list

Portrait of Hal Habib

(The final part of a series counting down to the start of 2024 Dolphins training camp.)

The unknowns regarding Tyreek Hill in the 2024 season:

1. How much he’ll get paid now that the receiving market keeps getting reset.

2. Whether he’ll become the first player to have 2,000 receiving yards in a season.

Hill is working on the four-year, $120 million contract he signed shortly after he was traded to the Dolphins. But he’s looking to rework that deal now that Minnesota’s All-Pro, Justin Jefferson , is getting $35 million per season, $5 million more than Hill.

Hill said he wants to be a “Dolphin for life,” but the numbers must work out for that to happen.

More: These are the Top 5 Miami Dolphins training camp storylines

“My job is, obviously, to come out here and continue to do whatever I can to help this team win, whether that’s a restructure, whether that’s whatever the case may be,” Hill said. “We want to make sure it benefits both sides and I want to be able to help the team as much as I can.”

Once the contract is settled, everyone can focus on whether Hill can get his 2,000 yards.

He wasn’t afraid to let everyone know that was his goal last season. And for much of the year, he was ahead of that pace. But late-season injuries left him shy of the finish line.

Still, 119 receptions, 1,799 yards and 13 touchdowns are numbers any receiver would be proud to have.

Why Hill is No. 1

This could be a one-sentence answer: because he has been the team MVP both years in Miami.

Or: because he has been an All-Pro every year in the league.

Or: because he has the most 50-yard catches in the NFL since 2016 (23), third-most TD catches (76), most scrimmage yards by a receiver (10,905) … the list is seemingly endless.

With qualifications like that, you’d assume he’s atop the Dolphins’ receiving record book. You’d be correct. He’s Nos. 1 and 2 on the single-season list in receptions and yards.

Telling stat

Mark Clayton holds the team record with 550 receptions.

Hill is 43 percent of the way there with 238.

Clayton reached his total in 10 seasons.

Hill reached his in two.

More: You won't believe how one USA Today NFL writer thinks the Miami Dolphins season will go

How we see Hill’s future

Hill recently turned 30, so how long will his sprinter’s speed hold up?

The other question goes back to his contract. The current structure calls for him to have cap numbers of $31.3 million this season and $34.2 million in 2025, according to overthecap.com. But the real problem is the number balloons up to $56.3 million for 2026. There’s virtually no chance the Dolphins could absorb that kind of cap hit for a 32-year-old receiver.
