Trek 69er review

The brainchild of singlespeed World Champ Travis Brown, the 69er is a purpose-built singlespeed rig with a 26in rear wheel and a 29in front wheel

The brainchild of singlespeed World Champ Travis Brown, the 69er is a purpose-built singlespeed rig with a 26in rear wheel and a 29in front wheel. The frame exhibits an incredible amount of attention to detail: a flared bottom bracket area, sliding dropouts and stop safety screws, and that's just to begin with.

>Full bling has been applied, rounded off by the Maverick DUC32 fork that gives 100mm (4in) of travel. The 29er/26in wheel combo produces a distinct ride.

Trek 69er singlespeed

For those seeking speed rather than comfort.

You can trust Cyclingnews Our experts spend countless hours testing cycling tech and will always share honest, unbiased advice to help you choose. Find out more about how we test.

US singlespeed superhero Travis Brown has epitomised top-class single-gear racing for years. All his experience is distilled into this unique machine, but it’s not one for comfort seekers.

The most interesting aspect of the frame is its wheel size concept. The

Ride & handling: Super-swift but bruisingly stiff

It’s obvious that the monster-width

Weight is reasonable for an off-the-peg 69er at 24.2lb (11kg) and the smaller rear wheel accelerates quickly.

The most obvious casualty from

trek 69er price

Frame: The most holistic singlespeed around

The 69er frame has been around for a while, but it’s still the most holistic singlespeed frame solution around. While the weight-saving butting and cutting inside the frame is hidden there’s no mistaking the extensive hydroforming on every tube – even the seat tube flares to full BB shell width.

Big braceless chainstays and wishboned seatstays keep the rear tight while hollow-section terminals carry the dropout sections with inbuilt screw adjusters.

Equipment: Classy Fox fork and Seventies-style detailing

Fox’s F29 RP24 100mm fork with custom Bontrager crown offset gets the party started. Bontrager also provides the singlespeed-specific chainset and single-cog cassette with neat chainguards on each end.

The ovoid link Shimano chain is super tough and flex free. We’re big fans of Bontrager’s fat, tubeless-ready Duster tyres, which with the broad tubeless-ready rims let you run lower pressures if the frame proves too painful.

The wide, flat bar gives power-assisted steering without raising hands too high. Kit is colour co-ordinated with the frame, with brown rims, brakes, grips and saddle backing up Seventies psychedelic graphic detailing.

I have one of these for sale if anyone if interested let me know at thenaturalway at earthlink dot net. Thanks 3/2/2012. Clearing garage to make room for a straight up XC race bike.

I have a Lenz Lunchbox 5" 29er which caused me to sell my Yeti 575 which I loved before getting bitten by the 29er bug. After riding both the Lenz and the Trek, if I could only have one bike, it would be the TF 69er.

None. Well, if they make the 69er with full floater and ABP I may be tempted to upgrade!

I was a bit skeptical of the 69er concept after getting hooked on my FS 29er. I bought the TF 69er on closeout from my LBS. I wasn't immediately blown away by this bike, but the more I ride the 69er the more I like it. I hope that the 69er concept catches on - I think Trek is really on to something here. Great bike!

yeti 575, Lenz Lunchbox

The bike rolls very well and corners like it is on rails. The large front wheel makes obstacles a breeze. The acceleration is perfect and the bike manages to hold the momentum.

The front wheel will raise up on steep climbs such as levees. You will have to just lean into it and power up the levee.

You can put anyone on this bike at any skill level and they will be unbelievably fast. I would definitely recommend this bike to anyone in the market. *Note* Before buying this bike I spend 2 hours test riding a few 26ers and this kick@ss machine. I am 5'8" and feel I fit this bike very well.

Excellent frame and fork Combo for the money. The Fox 29 is a massive improvment over the Reba 29 I ran last year.

dodgy crank and Avid brakes are pants

I'm a tall guy, about 6'2". I've always struggled to get a good fit on a bike. 26er XL frames leave you too high at the front. Going over drops and steep decents was always a sketchy experience. I tried 29 inch wheels and loved it. For tall people 29ers are a no brainer. The only problem I had was the lack of zip in the rear. 29er wheels are slow to accelerate. Sure they roll well but in and out of the corners I struggled to really make them fly. This bike is the perfect combination of both. All the advantages of the 29er confidence up front and the zip of a 26 inch wheel behind. I notice at this years Interbike a few more companies are bringing out 69ers. I think it's the way forward for tall riders or riders who have confidence problems on the steeps. Probably the best bike I've riden in 20 years of mountain biking. My only gripe is the 2009 model gets the ABP and floating pivot. That would have been nice.

Plenty of 26er suspensions and a couple of 29er hardtails

This bike likes to spin up and roll! I notice that I am way faster than my previous bike (RALEIGH TOMAC M Ti 1000) even though it was a Ti hardtail race bike...the 29" front wheel turns everything into a launch ramp and makes mole hills out of mountains...

29er front wheel takes a minute to get used to....it definitely feels bigger than a 26er!

The Bottom line is that I wanted to finally go full suspension and 4" travel is perfect for anything I ride...the 29er in the front rolls over anything and my riding buddies have learned not to follow my lines...the 26er in the back gives way better acceleration than any full 29er I have ridden and I just find myself having more fun than I can ever remember riding my TREK 69er. PS If you see me on the trail , Im the one with the huge grin from ear to ear...

None..this bike is truly in a class by itself!

weight, geometry, price, innovative design

cranks, front derailer, tires are tubeless ready but not tubeless.

I demoed the bike first and bought one the next day. The bike rocks, I love it, my friends are jealous, I am faster now and am not sure if it is the bike or me, whatever the case, I am more confident on the drops, rocky climbs and stairs with the 29 up front. The bike handles like a charm and it feels like it 'carves' through turns. The front shock locks out easy when needed and the pro-pedal on the rear works great. I am not a good enough rider to know if the deore cranks are really worse than XT, but my 'name dropping' ego is bruised when my brethren pull up with XT or XTR equipped bikes. The bike weighed in around 27.5 stock and now is just a little over 27 since I went tubeless. For a $2500.00 bike, this seems like a great deal. Pedals used are xpedo. I only notice the larger tire up front when I want to, the rocky descents and medium size drops no longer give me the willies or concern me that I will go over the handlebars. Other than that, I don't notice the difference and have yet to miss having a smaller wheel up front. My budget for a bike was around $4000.00 this was the only production full suspension 69er out there and it only cost $2500.00. If it got stolen tomorrow, I would replace it with the same thing all over again!

Why a 69er?

trek 69er price

The new Trek 69er is creating a bit of a buzz in the 29er land. I think it’s mainly because of its ridiculous price, but that’s just me.

trek 69er price

But why would anyone buy a 69er bike? Well, before we get there, let’s quickly define what a 69er bike is. A 69er or 96er as Carver likes to call them, is a bike with two different sized wheels: a 29 inch wheel on the front and a 26 inch wheel on the rear.

What was Trek & Carver thinking when they built such a bike? The idea was to combine the best attributes of a 29 inch wheel with the best attributes of a 26 inch wheel. Those attributes for the 29 inch wheels are it’s ability to roll over obstacles better due to a lower angle of attack, higher volume tires allowing for less air which then equals to more contact patch on the ground. I won’t go into these advantages since they’ve been well documented on this site before, here .

trek 69er price

The 26 inch wheel has two things working for it: 1. it has a weight advantage over the 29 inch brethren. No matter what you do, physics say that a 26″ wheel made of the same material/componentry as a 29″ wheel will always weigh less.

2. a 26 inch wheel is able to get up to speed, or accelerate faster due to its smaller size. This is seen in different tests: MBA’s two “Gary Fisher Paragon” test and the Mythblasters 29er Video , to name a couple.

Some people have also tried building a 69er bike on their own. I’ve heard that it’s a do-able bike project. It’s do-able if you have the right kind of 26 inch bike to begin with. Most people suggest using a 26 inch bike with at least 4 inches of front travel. The more inches in front the better as this will compensate for the larger 29er fork you will have to fit up there to accommodate the larger 29er tire. Having a longer travel front will not throw your geometry off as much as having a 3 inch travel 26 inch bike and throwing a larger 29er fork on it.

Some time before, I needed to buy a building for my organization but I did not earn enough cash and could not purchase something. Thank goodness my brother adviced to take the loans from trustworthy creditors. So, I acted that and was happy with my short term loan.

Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

  • Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
  • Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
  • How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
  • What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
  • What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
  • What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.
