TripIt: Store Your Passport and Travel Documents in One App

This image may contain Electronics Phone Mobile Phone and Cell Phone

Dropbox, crumbled printouts shoved in a not-so-secret pocket in our suitcase—we all have own (not always wonderful) methods for storing backups of important travel documents like our passport and ID when we travel. Now TripIt, an app for organizing all your travel reservations and plans in one place, is hoping to make keeping track of those things a little easier. Their new ‘Traveler Profile’ feature is a digital place to store scanned versions of your passport and ID as well as contact info for people like your house sitter and doctor. Information is available while you’re traveling within TripIt’s iOS and Android apps, as well as through its website.

TripIt says that your profile can store “almost any document,” but it comes with 20 preset document and contact types to help you get started. You add everything right on your phone (including snapping shots of your passport), and access it with just a few taps later on. The information is also stored offline so you can access it even when you don’t have a data connection. All that sensitive data is protected behind a four-digit PIN, so if you happen to lose your phone you don’t have to worry about your info ending up in nefarious hands. If you’re the travel coordinator for your family of four, you can also store everyone’s documents to your account so you can access everything at once.

Using TripIt is a lot safer than storing things on your phone’s camera roll, and can make filling out forms at the airport or pulling up your pediatrician’s number in an emergency a lot easier. If you do end up in a situation where you lose your phone or luggage, there’s also definitely something to be said for having all that information available via the web.

TripIt’s new Traveler Profile is available now. If you’re already a TripIt user, you’ll find it under ‘Profile’ on the app’s home screen once you download the update. TripIt and the Traveler Profile feature is free to use, but the $49/year Pro version of the app offers additional features like seat tracking, refund notifications, and real-time flight alerts.

7 Travel Apps You Need To Download To Document Your Travels

7 Travel Apps You Need To Download To Document Your Travels

Travelling is all about making memories and experiencing new things but the best way to keep track of all of your memories is to document your travels. I love taking photos, videos and making notes of the places I've been so I can look back later and attempt to relive my experiences in Europe and Australia . Carrying around a camera to every single place I visit on my travels was getting annoying so I decided to invest in a newer iPhone and search for some apps to use. There are so many different ways to document your travels so today I'm sharing a few of my favourite travel apps that I used to document my trips.

1. Instagram

Perhaps the most obvious on the list but definitely worth a mention is Instagram . Instagram is the BEST way to share your travel photos and videos with all of your friends. I especially love Instagram's highlights feature.

If you're visiting multiple countries, you can create highlights for each country and share your stories here so you can go back and relive your travels.

IGTV is also a great way to document your trip. With IGTV, you can upload videos that can be up to an hour long. You can create a full video of your trip and upload it to IGTV for your followers. I also suggest creating your own travel hashtag and using it in your photos so you can look back through the hashtag later and see all of your travel photos in one place. For best results use a third-party Instagram story maker .

2. Evernote

It's great to have photos of your trips but I also think it's important to write stuff down. It's so hard to get lost in all of your experiences and forget the little details.

I use Evernote as a travel app to write down my itineraries, the places I've visited, the restaurants we try out, the food we liked, and anything little thing I want to remember.

You can also use Evernote email forwarding and Web Clipper to keep all of your important information in one place. Not only is this great for my own memories, but I've also used my Evernote notes to share itineraries with friends travelling to places I've been to. If you have a blog and plan to write blog posts about your travels, Evernote will be your best friend.

Voted one of the best new apps by Apple, Journi is the best way to document your travel with photos, notes, and maps. You can even turn them into printed photo books. These stories can be private to you or you can share them publicly or with a specific audience.

The best part about this app is that you can create stories with your travel partner. You can both capture photos and take notes and store them in one story so you can create the memory book together. They also allow you to search other stories around the world so you can see what other people are doing on their travels.

This is a great way to find travel inspiration or look for suggested spots to check out during your trip.

4. 1 Second Everyday

Make a quick and memorable video of your travels by recording just one second every single day. I have loved using the 1 Second Everyday app to document my travels so far this year. I decided to use it a little differently and I export videos after each country or trip.

This way I have a quick video of each place instead of one longer one of my entire year. I love to take videos of the exciting things I see on my trip so most days I have a lot more than one second in my video and that's okay! The app is easy to use and it will even remind you to add a video for the day.

There were definitely days that I missed my one-second clips but that didn't matter the video still turned out awesome and I'm really happy I found this app!

5. ChatBooks

Chatbooks is a great app to use if you want a hard copy of your travel photos. These photo books are a great keepsake and couldn't be easier to put together. The easiest way to create a photo book is by using the hashtag I mentioned earlier. When you use the Chatbooks app to create your photobooks, simply select the hashtag and all of your travel photos will be in one place.

Then you can pick and choose the ones you want to include in your book. You'll also have the option to edit any captions and add your own text to your book. If you're interested in getting regular photobooks sent to you, you can create a subscription and for every 60 photos posted on your Instagram, Chatbooks will send you your customized photobook.

6. Tripcast

My parents love to be able to see what I'm doing while I'm travelling but constantly sending them photos and explaining what they were looking at got annoying real fast. Enter Tripcast .

This app is the best way to share your trip with your friends and family. Upload your photos to Tripcast and invite your friends and family to follow along. You can easily make updates and your followers can ask questions or leave comments. Photos are automatically added to your trip map so your friends and family can see exactly where the photo was taken without having to ask.

7. Google Photos

Download Google Photos and set it up so that whenever you're connected to Wi-Fi all of the new photos on your phone are transferred to Google Photos. Not only is this great to ensure you never lose your photos, but the Google Photos assistant will also enhance your photos, create animations, create location/time-based albums, and show you memories from previous years.

I know everyone is talking about getting off your phones and enjoying the moment as you're living it but taking photos and videos make me happy and I love being able to share those memories with my friends and family. If I'm going to spend all of this money travelling around the world, exploring new places and experiencing new things, I don't want to rely on just my memory.

Memories fade but photos and videos last forever. I want to be able to watch a video and be reminded of how I felt at that moment. I want to look at my photos and tell the stories of each for years to come so I am very thrilled to have access to all of these amazing applications in the palm of my hand. Documenting my travels has never been easier.

How to Use the TripIt App to Organise Your Travel Documents

How to Use the TripIt App to Organise Your Travel Documents

When you travel, there can be a lot of information to keep track of. The free TripIt app is one convenient way you can organise your documents and details so that you have all information together.

In the TripIt app, you can create a trip and then enter/upload the information and documents you need, such as:

  • Travel information, including flight details and tickets.
  • Booking details for extra hotel nights you may have arranged in connection with your trip.
  • The PDF documents you receive from Nature Travels for your experience with us.

Once you’ve uploaded the documents you need, you can access your trip information and documents offline at any time in the app.

How to Use the TripIt App to Organise Your Travel Documents

When you make a booking with Nature Travels, you will receive at least two PDF documents by email:

  • Booking Confirmation: This will show what you have booked, including the number of persons, your tour dates, any optional extras you have chosen, the amount you have paid so far, and any payment amount that is still outstanding along with the date the balance payment is due.
  • Info file: This will contain practical information for your experience, including contact details for your local hosts in the destination country (in case you need to call them on your arrival day if you are delayed, etc), a recommended packing list, a list of what is included as standard, and FAQs answering the most common questions you may have.

Depending on the experience you have booked and when you made your booking, you may also receive some additional PDF documents by email:

  • Confirmation of Full Payment: If you only paid a deposit when you booked (if you booked more than 60 days before the start of your trip), you will receive this document when you make your balance payment (due 60 days before the start of your trip). At the same time, we’ll also send you another copy of the “Info” file. Some details in the “Info” file might have changed since the earlier version, so it’s always a good idea to refer to this latest document.
  • Tour Description documents: Some of our experiences, such as some of our canoeing or timber rafting tours, will have detailed route description documents that you will need to have with you for your tour. You will receive these documents when you make full payment for your tour (so they will either be sent with your Booking Confirmation or Confirmation of Full Payment emails, depending on whether you paid deposit only or made full payment at time of booking).

Uploading these documents to the TripIt app, together with your flight and other travel documents and any other information you would like to add, is a convenient way to make sure you have all the information you need with you.

How to Use the TripIt App:

NB: The free version of the TripIt app only allows you to upload three documents per trip. If you need more but don’t want to upgrade, you can get around this by dividing your overall trip into separate TripIt “trips”. For example, you could have one “trip” titled “Travel to Kiruna”, where you keep your bus ticket to the airport, flight ticket and train ticket for travel in Sweden, and a second “trip” titled “Discover Dog Sledding in Lapland”, where you store the documents you have received from Nature Travels for your experience.

Step 1 – Download the TripIt app

Search the App Store or Google Play for the “TripIt: Travel Planner” app.

Step 2 – Create an account

When you log in to the app, it will ask to you create an account with your email address and a password.

Step 3 – Add trip documents and itinerary information

How you do this depends on the type of document/information you need to add.

Flight, train or hotel bookings: If you have received a confirmation email for your flight or other online booking, simply forward the mail (make sure you send it from the mail address that you use to register for your TripIt account) to [email protected]

As if by magic, the system should then add the itinerary information to the app for you a few seconds later. NB: If your confirmation document contains an attachment, such as a PDF for your flight ticket, this will not be added. You should add the document manually as described below. NB: This doesn’t work for all types of booking – for example, when testing the app, we found that it recognised flight details from a confirmation mail from Finnair without problems, but would not recognise the confirmation of a National Express coach booking. If the system cannot automatically process the information in the mail you send, you will receive a “there was a problem with your submission” email, and the information will not be added to your itinerary in the app. Instead, the contents of the email will be added as an “Unfiled” document in the app. You can then go in and assign that information to a particular trip and classify it under a category such as “transportation” or “note”.

How to Use the TripIt App to Organise Your Travel Documents

Nature Travels PDF files or other documents: Once you have a trip set up in the app (created, for example, from auto-adding flight information as above), you can add extra components to it. For example, to add your tour with Nature Travels:

Click + to Add Plan.

How to Use the TripIt App to Organise Your Travel Documents

  • Choose “Activity” and enter whatever details of the activity you wish (for example: “Event Name: Discover Dog Sledding in Lapland”; Start 24 March 2024 Start Time 15.00; End 27 March 2025 End Time 10.00″).
  • When you’ve created the activity, it will appear in your itinerary (where in the itinerary it appears depends on what start/end date/time information you have entered).
  • Click on the activity in the itinerary and then under “Documents”, click “+ Add” to upload documents from your phone to the app. Here you can collect all the PDF documents you have received from us: – Your Booking Confirmation (and Confirmation of Full Payment if you have one). – The Info file for your tour. – Any additional route description or other documents that you receive.
  • You can also set up a PIN-protected area to store sensitive information or documents.

How to Use the TripIt App to Organise Your Travel Documents

That’s it! There are many more features of the app that you can discover, but the steps above will allow you to save the basic documents and information for your tour for easy access when you are travelling.

Remember: When using this or any other automated process or technological tool, check the details yourself carefully to make sure everything is correct – don’t miss your flight because the app has interpreted a time or date incorrectly or is displaying information in a different time zone! 🙂

Happy travels!

Why Are Travel Journal Apps Essential for Modern Travelers?

This organization makes it incredibly easy to find specific moments or experiences when you want to revisit them later. No more flipping through pages or scrolling endlessly through handwritten notes.

Offline Capabilities : Many travel journal apps offer offline functionality. This means you can continue to write and update your journal even when you’re in remote areas without an internet connection. You won’t miss a beat in capturing your travel memories.

Privacy and Security : Digital travel journals can be password-protected or encrypted, ensuring the privacy of your thoughts and experiences. This level of security provides peace of mind, especially if your journal contains sensitive or personal content.

Interactive Maps : Some apps integrate interactive mapping features, allowing you to plot your journey, mark significant locations, and even create custom itineraries. This visual representation adds another layer of depth to your travel stories.

Real-time Weather and Location Data : Many travel journal apps automatically capture real-time weather and location data for your entries. This adds context to your memories, helping you recall the weather conditions or exact coordinates of your adventures.

Easy Editing and Formatting : Unlike traditional journals where editing can be cumbersome, travel journal apps often come with easy editing tools. You can correct errors, change the formatting, and update your entries effortlessly, ensuring your travel stories are polished and presentable.

Backup and Recovery : These apps usually provide cloud backup options, guaranteeing that your travel journal is safe from loss or damage. In case your device is lost or damaged, your precious travel memories can be recovered easily.

Global Community : Some travel journal apps connect you to a global community of travelers, allowing you to share your experiences, gain inspiration from others, and even receive travel tips and recommendations from like-minded individuals.

Incorporating a travel journal app into your adventures is not just about documenting your travels; it’s about enhancing your travel experiences, staying organized, and sharing your adventures with the world. These apps are the perfect companion for modern travelers seeking a more efficient and interactive way to chronicle their journeys.

How to Choose the Right Travel Journal App?

Selecting the right travel journal app can significantly enhance your journey, making the process of documenting your experiences a breeze. With a multitude of options available, finding the perfect app can be a daunting task. This ultimate guide will walk you through the factors to consider when choosing the ideal travel journal app to suit your needs.

1. Purpose and Features : First, identify your primary purpose for using a travel journal app. Are you mainly interested in writing, or do you want multimedia features such as photo and video integration? Look for an app that aligns with your intended use.

2. Platform Compatibility : Ensure the app is compatible with your device. Most travel journal apps are available for both iOS and Android, but it’s essential to verify before downloading.

3. Offline Functionality : Consider whether the app works offline. This feature is vital for travelers who explore remote areas with limited internet access. Offline capabilities allow you to write and update your journal regardless of your location.

4. Ease of Use : Look for an app with an intuitive interface. A user-friendly design ensures that you can quickly learn how to use the app and start documenting your travels without frustration.

5. Multimedia Integration : If you want to include photos, videos, and links in your journal, seek apps that offer robust multimedia integration. Ensure that it supports the file types and formats you intend to use.

6. Privacy and Security : Review the app’s privacy and security settings. Depending on your preferences, you may want an app that allows you to password-protect your entries or encrypt your data for added security.

7. Backup and Sync : Choose an app that offers backup and synchronization options. This ensures that your travel journal is safe and accessible across multiple devices.

8. Community and Sharing : If you wish to connect with a travel journaling community or share your adventures with others, opt for an app that provides these social features.

9. Pricing and In-App Purchases : Assess the app’s pricing model. Some travel journal apps are free, while others require a one-time purchase or a subscription. Be aware of any in-app purchases or premium features.

By considering these factors, you can confidently choose the right travel journal app that aligns with your travel style and preferences. Remember that the perfect app is one that seamlessly integrates into your travel experience, helping you capture, share, and relive your adventures effortlessly.

Social Side of Travel Journal Apps

Traveling is not just about the destinations; it’s about the stories you collect along the way and the connections you make with fellow adventurers. Travel journal apps have evolved beyond simple note-taking tools; they have embraced the social age, allowing you to share your wanderlust with the world.

Real-Time Updates : One of the most captivating aspects of travel journal apps is their ability to offer real-time updates. Whether you’re exploring a hidden gem or witnessing a stunning sunset, you can instantly share your experiences with friends and family, giving them a glimpse of your adventure as it unfolds. It’s like taking them on the journey with you.

Social Media Integration : Many travel journal apps seamlessly integrate with popular social media platforms. This means that you can cross-post your entries, photos, and videos to platforms like Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, expanding your audience and engagement. It’s an excellent way to inspire others to explore and share their own journeys.

Community Interaction : Some apps foster a sense of community among travelers. You can connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for exploration. These communities often provide a platform to ask for travel advice, exchange tips, and engage in meaningful conversations about your favorite destinations.

Collaborative Journals : The social aspect of travel journal apps goes beyond personal sharing. You can collaborate with fellow travelers to create shared journals. Whether you’re traveling with friends or meeting new people on the road, collaborative journals allow multiple perspectives and experiences to come together in one place.

Mobile Passport Control (MPC) allows eligible travelers to submit their travel document, photo, and customs declaration information through a free, secure app on their smartphone or other mobile device. The use of MPC streamlines the traveler’s entry process into the United States by reducing passport control inspection time and overall wait time. Use of MPC does not require pre-approval. Travelers who successfully use the MPC app will no longer have to complete a paper form and may be provided a designated queue. As a result, travelers may experience shorter wait times, less congestion and efficient processing.

Eligible Travelers

Currently, the list of eligible travelers are below. This list will be updated as we expand MPC eligibility.

  • U.S. Citizens
  • Lawful Permanent Residents
  • Canadian B1/B2
  • Returning Visa Waiver Program  Applicants

The CBP Mobile Passport Control App

CBP’s MPC app is a free application that can be downloaded from the Apple App store and Google Play and is currently available for eligible travelers to use upon arrival at MPC approved sites . See FAQ question number 2 to see a complete list of current MPC Sites.

New MPC News

  • Detroit Michigan Airport (DTW) now accepts MPC! [July 09, 2024]
  • Stay tuned as we have many new exciting features coming soon!

Visit our Mobile Apps Directory for other approved CBP applications for easy download from the Google Play and the Apple App Store.

How does MPC Work?

After downloading the MPC Application from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, eligible travelers will be prompted to create a profile with their passport or LPR card information. Upon arrival at eligible Preclearance locations users must select their mode of entry in the application as "Preclearance" before selecting their departing Preclearance Port of Entry. If a traveler is not using preclearance, upon landing in the United States, travelers will select "U.S. airport" as their mode of entry and then select their arrival airport or seaport and terminal. Travelers will then take a self-photo and answer a series of CBP inspection-related questions. Once the traveler submits their transaction through the app, travelers will then bring their physical passport to a CBP officer to finalize their inspection for entry into the United States.

Cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity is required to send information, but travelers may complete profile(s) without being connected to the internet.

Where can eligible travelers use MPC?

CBP uses the Mobile Passport Control (MPC) application to streamline the processing of eligible travelers entering the United States. Eligible travelers with a smartphone or tablet may voluntarily download the Mobile Passport Control (MPC)-enabled mobile application (app) from a mobile application store (e.g., Apple App Store or Google Play Store).

The MPC mobile app, is available to U.S. citizens, U.S. lawful permanent residents, Canadian B1/B2 citizen visitors and returning Visa Waiver Program travelers with approved ESTA. MPC is currently available at the following 52 sites, including 34 U.S. International Airports, 14 Preclearance locations, and 4 seaports of entry:

What are the benefits of using MPC?

MPC provides a more efficient in-person inspection between the CBP officer and the traveler. Since the administrative tasks are performed by the traveler prior to the passport control inspection, MPC reduces passport control inspection time and overall wait times.

When will I be able to submit my information to CBP through an MPC app?

Travelers should submit their information upon arrival at the port of entry, including preclearance locations.

Does MPC replace my passport?

No, travelers must present a valid U.S. Passport, U.S. lawful permanent resident card, Canadian passport or a Visa Waiver Program passport to a CBP officer upon arrival.

Will I still have to go through the processing lines if I use MPC?

Yes, travelers will still be processed by a CBP officer. Travelers using MPC will be directed to a specific processing lane for a streamlined entry process.

Do travelers still have to fill out a declaration form?

No. Travelers will answer CBP inspection-related questions electronically via their smartphone or tablet. If a traveler has already filled out a CBP declaration form, it can be turned in to a CBP Officer.

Can groups use MPC?

Yes, up to 12 travelers can be added under 1 group submission.

Is using MPC secure?

Yes, the traveler’s document information and answers to CBP inspection-related questions are submitted directly to CBP via secure encryption protocols. The information you enter on the authorized applications are securely transmitted to CBP which sends a response to the apps, generating the electronic receipt you may display when entering the MPC queue. The authorized apps provide the option to store your profile on your smartphone or tablet for future travel or deleting it after your trip. Please note that the photo taken on the application will need to be updated periodically. CBP recommends travelers review the application’s privacy policy prior to download and use. Only information entered after the traveler acknowledges CBP’s notices (i.e., CBP’s mobile privacy policy, Section 311 of the Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act of 2015, Disclaimer Statement and the Paperwork Reduction Act Notice) is required to be compliant with CBP’s MPC business requirements.

What happens if my flight is diverted to a different airport?

Travelers will not be able to use MPC if their flight is diverted to a U.S. airport that does not utilize MPC processing. Upon arrival at the diverted airport, travelers will follow standard processing procedures. If you were processed by a CBP officer in Preclearance, you would land as a domestic passenger and can proceed to your destination or connecting flight.

From passports to visas, the paperwork is all important when it comes to jetting from one country to another, which is why it’s worth investing in one of the best travel wallets, to keep all your documents safe and ready to access when you need them.

Luckily, some of our favourite travel accessory brands have risen to the challenge, producing fantastic travel wallets that not only have room for all the essentials but look incredibly stylish and reduce the risk of identity fraud, too.

We strongly recommend opting for RFID (radio-frequency identification) wallets, which use nickel and copper-coated material (usually polyester) to reduce the risk of identity fraud, by blocking the electromagnetic signals emitted from your bank cards.

Take the time to think about what you’re going to be using your wallet for – if you’re going to fill it to capacity, we’d recommend opting for a zip closure, but if easy access is a priority, don’t write off the humble magnet or press-stud closure.

We’re also huge fans of wallets that have clamshell openings – ones that open fully, like a book , rather than requiring you to extract your essentials through tiny openings.

How we tested the best travel wallets

Our recent trips involved a lot of paperwork (such as visas), currency in various denominations as well as essentials such as our passport (obviously), boarding passes and bank cards. We had plenty of opportunities to put a range of travel wallets to the test during these trips, whether it was before we’d even entered the airport (in India, all passengers must produce airplane tickets before being allowed into the terminal) or at visa checkpoints. In a nutshell? We truly put these wallets through their paces, and they all passed with flying colours. That said, certain ones have been clearly designed with specific additional purposes in mind, which is why we’ve highlighted the areas in which they excel below. Happy travels!

The best travel wallets for 2024 are:

  • Best travel wallet overall – Lifeventure RFID mini travel wallet: £24.94, Amazon.co.uk
  • Best budget travel wallet – Go Travel RFID organiser: £19.99, Go.travel
  • Best compact travel wallet – Jack Wolfskin cashbag wallet: £24, Jack-wolfskin.co.uk
  • Best for simplicity – Keela travel ID wallet: £24.95, Keelaoutdoors.com
  • Best large travel wallet – House of Disaster animal-print travel wallet: £29.99, Houseofdisaster.com

Lifeventure RFID mini travel wallet

  • Best : Travel wallet overall
  • Material : Nickel- and copper-coated polyester
  • Handy transparent pockets
  • Can also store your phone
  • Good choice of colours

This wallet has seven card pockets, including one covered by transparent plastic. Our advice? Use this one to stash ID cards, such as a driver’s licence – you can flash it without having to remove it from the wallet.

Larger slip pockets – placed beneath the smaller ones – are ideal for boarding passes and passports, and we used the pocket made from mesh to stash our iPhone. It’s another RFID wallet, which relies on nickel- and copper-coated polyester fabric to reduce the risk of identity theft.

Call us fickle but we loved the choice of four colourways, too.

Identity theft is no longer an invisible threat that brands merely use to convince us to part with extra cash. Well, some brands might still take this approach but Go Travel, which is known for its top-quality RFID travel wallets, definitely isn’t one of them, and this wallet is a case in point.

Despite its slimline design, it’s stuffed with pockets, to hold everything from passports (our rigorous testing proved that there was more than enough room for four) to boarding passes, which we placed in the extra-wide pockets beneath the ones designed to hold passports.

Unlike with similar products, the RFID tech has added minimal bulk, and its clamshell design, with zips that opened on three sides of each half of the wallet, meant refreshingly easy access to the contents.

Fjällräven kånken travel wallet

best travel wallet

  • Best : Travel wallet for easy access
  • Material : 65 per cent polyester, 35 per cent cotton
  • Extra-wide pockets
  • Tough and water-resistant

How Fjällräven managed to squeeze so many pockets into such a compact wallet, we’ll never know. We had plenty of room for our passport, vaccination documentation and foreign currency, which we placed inside the wallet, while we kept our boarding passes in the extra-wide exterior pocket on the wallet’s rear.

There’s an incredible sense of toughness to the kånken (thanks, partly, to the water-resistant G-1000 fabric), and we loved how the concertina-like strip of material between the wallet’s two halves meant we could open the wallet fully – no fumbling around through narrow openings to extricate essential documents.

Keela travel ID wallet

best travel wallet

  • Best : For simplicity
  • Material : Unspecified
  • Can be worn under garments
  • Great for easy access
  • No bells an whistles

To begin with, we were sceptical about the simplicity of this wallet but we’re now total converts. In recent years, partly because of the extra documentation required for travel (whether it’s vaccination paperwork or visa forms, much of which isn’t required to check in for a flight), we’ve taken to carrying our passport in a separate wallet, simply so we can produce it without riffling through irrelevant paperwork. Our top tip? Before entering the airport, place your boarding pass and passport in this transparent wallet (which slips neatly under jackets or T-shirts) and simply whip them out as and when required.

Jack Wolfskin cashbag wallet

best travel wallets

  • Best : Compact travel wallet
  • Material : Shell: 100 per cent polyamide; lining: 100 per cent polyester
  • Great for thick wads of cash
  • Small and easy to carry around

We love the name of this RFID wallet – if only because it brings to mind an accessory stuffed with thick wads of cash. That wasn’t the case where we were concerned, to be clear, although, we did find the extra-wide pocket useful for quickly stashing a wad of 1,000 Indian Rupees (don’t get excited – this equates to about £10).

It’s one of the smallest travel wallets in our selection, but that’s precisely why we love it – although it might not be large enough for your passport, it’s got more than enough room for currency, boarding passes and paperwork, and its size means it slips easily into pockets.

House of Disaster animal-print travel wallet

  • Best : Large travel wallet
  • Material : Vegan-friendly ‘leather’, faux cheetah fur, cotton lining
  • Funky, stylish design
  • Labelled compartments

We were instantly smitten with the flash of pink against the animal print, but the interior of this wallet was just as impressive. A zippered pocket was perfect for stashing loose change, while we used the shallow card pockets for hotel room keys and business cards. The highlight, however, was the main compartment, with its four dividers, clearly labelled (in chic golden font, no less) to indicate separate pockets for passports, tickets, documents and ‘other’.

Full disclosure, we were initially concerned by its larger size but a trip to India, which involved multiple internal flights (read: lots of tickets), visas and vaccination documentation, meant we easily filled this particular wallet.

It’s also available in a leopard-print design (£29.99, Houseofdisaster.com ).

The verdict: Travel wallets

If you want a wallet with all the bells and whistles, the Lifeventure RFID mini travel wallet is an absolute essential for jet-setters. It’s a great example of a product that proves opting for extra security doesn’t require going down the supersized route. Meanwhile, Fjällräven’s kånken travel wallet is a sturdy, stylish piece of kit that stands up to serious amounts of wear and tear. If you like to stand out from the crowd, however, the House of Disaster animal-print travel wallet offers a dose of dopamine-boosting design.

Preparing for your next trip just got a whole lot easier, thanks to our pick of the best packing cubes to keep your suitcase organised

Find yourself waist deep in a river? It’s waterproof. Find yourself going through some sketchy looking areas? It protects against Radio-Frequency Identification devices. It boasts pockets for your passport, boarding passes, cash, cards and even your smartphone. It's the perfect compact travel wallet and for the price, and reviewers agree, you can’t beat it.

The best multi pocket travel wallet

Go Travel Document Organiser

10. Go Travel Document Organiser

This travel document holder is the perfect contender for the most amount of pockets featured in a small space competition. There’s several card slots, an ID slot, a travel money zipped pocket, a slot to put your boarding passes and enough slots for several passports, if you’re travelling as a family.

It’s also good to note that this travel wallet provides RFID protection, so you can be completely sure that your identification is safe. Comments suggest that it’s fairly bulky in size, and therefore needs a large pocket for storing it away, aside from that, it’s the perfect practical travel companion.

How to buy the best travel wallet for you

Your choice of travel wallet will partly depend on style. Leather screams ‘sophisticated businessman’, while durable, waterproof materials will appeal to those who only entertain travel-grade products that will last much longer than the air miles you collect.

Having space for passports and cards is standard, but not all travel document holders have space for keys, pens, and cash, and even some electronics.

You can find small travel wallets for single travellers, slightly bigger versions for couples, and whopping great A4-sized versions for large families and tour group leaders. They can be pocket-sized, or rucksack-sized, depending on your requirements. There are other things to think about, too.

Another aspect to consider is whether you want your travel wallet to provide protection against Radio-Frequency Identification devices (RFiD). Although rare, identification theft is an issue, and something you may or may not be worried out. Some of the best travel wallets block these devices, while others don’t, so it’s worth bearing it in mind when choosing. Ditto worldwide tracking, which adds even more peace of mind in case of theft.

When it comes to the best travel wallets, you get what you pay for. There’s nothing wrong with being cheap and cheerful, but if you want a wallet to become your faithful travel companion, you’re going to have to stretch that budget.

If you have a travel document holder, it's usefulness can spread beyond airports. Always take the same credit card when you travel? If you do have cards and documents that you only use when you travel – principally your passport, of course – a travel document holder is the ideal place to store them all when you are at home. Ditto emergency cash; no-one should go anywhere without at least US$50 in emergency cash (dollars are always better than pounds, especially when travelling outside Europe), and a travel document holder is the ideal place to keep it when you're at home as well as on your travels.

Carrying scanned travel documents offers several practical advantages, making it a recommended practice for modern travelers:

Accessibility

Scanned documents can be accessed quickly on electronic devices like smartphones or tablets, eliminating the need to dig through physical copies.

Having digital copies ensures that if physical documents are lost or stolen, travelers can still access essential information needed for travel arrangements and emergencies.

Scanned documents can be encrypted or stored securely in cloud services, reducing the risk of sensitive information being compromised.

Convenience

Travelers can easily share scanned documents with airlines, hotels, and authorities when required, reducing the hassle of carrying and presenting physical copies.

Space Saving

Avoiding bulky paper documents lightens luggage load and frees up space for other essentials, enhancing travel comfort and convenience.

Environmental Impact

  • - Identification:  Copies of other identification documents such as driver's license or national identity card.
  • - Travel Insurance:  Scanned copies of your travel insurance policy documents, including emergency contact information.
  • - Emergency Contacts:  A list of emergency contacts, including embassy or consulate information for the countries you are visiting.

Having these documents scanned and stored securely on your devices ensures you can access them easily, even if the physical copies are lost or misplaced during your travels.

Smarttrips App By Teksmobile

travel document storage app

Summary: Smarttrips is a customised digital travel wallet app, available on the iOS and Android platforms. It allows users to store all types of important travel documents in electronic format, and offers other key competitive advantages too.

Being worried all the time can totally ruin a much-awaited holiday. That’s precisely why it is always ideal to chalk out detailed itineraries, and make all the required bookings well in advance – to avoid the last-minute panic. Over time, technology has also started to aid the travel business in general, and individual travelers in particular, in a big way (would you ever step onto an unknown road without GPS?). The Teks team had previously worked on several travel-related applications – with Stopover (airport meetup app) and Trotjot (travel journal app) being among the most noteworthy ones. When the Smarttrips project came along, it presented us with a new challenge – one that us got all excited.

travel document storage app

What Is Smarttrips All About?

Smarttrips has been designed as an application that would deliver value to both travel businesses as well as individual clients (travelers). It goes beyond the run-of-the-mill definition of ‘travel document storage app’, and offers a multitude of functionalities to users. As soon as Leonie had outlined the project to us, we knew that this one would be a winner.

“I have worked with Hussain and his team for several years now…right since the days of Lifestyle Travel. Here was a group that was great both in terms of professionalism as well as technical expertise. When the idea for Smarttrips took shape, there was no question of going with it to any other company. Why look further when you already have the best?”

In a nutshell, Smarttrips is a smart travel assistant application that allows travel businesses to securely store their clients’ travel documents on the digital platform. It does away with the (often troublesome!) need to carry fat wallets, crammed with papers and tickets and identification documents, and other important stuff.

Smarttrips on iOS and Android

The Smarttrips application is all about delivering greater convenience to travelers. If we had limited its availability to a single platform, its purpose would have been somewhat defeated. Leonie agreed with our vision to maximize its reach…and as such, separate, customised versions for iOS and Android were created.

Our in-house iOS and Android development teams started working simultaneously on the Smarttrips app. After some deliberation, we decided to make the app available on Apple devices running on iOS 8 and later, and on Android devices powered by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and later. The app, of course, can be downloaded and used on smartphones AND tablets.

“I wanted Smarttrips to offer certain key points of difference…let’s just say competitive advantages…to the travel businesses using it. The guys at Teks were with me on the same page right through, and created the app just like my plans.”

Positive reviews, 24x7 communication.

A trip plan might have to be updated at a very short notice. Travelers might wish to make certain changes at any time. In such situations, ensuring that they can get in touch with their agents on a 24×7 basis is vital. Smarttrips has a built-in messaging system to address this need. This in-app messaging option facilitates greater, and more seamless, client engagements, interactions and overall engagement.

As a travel enthusiast, I often look for travel apps that offer real value-added services. Smartrips fits the bill perfectly regarding that. I feel that the app can play a strong role in bolstering customer loyalty levels…something that is crucial for any business, travel or otherwise.

From flight tickets, country guides and hotel vouchers, to vehicle documents, maps, event tickets and more – Smartrips allows users (businesses) to ‘digitally store and supply’ all types of critical travel documents. There’s no saying which document might be urgently required at any moment – and having everything easily accessible on a smartphone (or tablet) is convenient indeed. Smarttrips is more than an electronic ticket wallet app…it can be a real useful digital travel companion!

The Magic Of

Easy To Manage. Vast Array Of Features.

Smarttrips comes with an efficiently designed web-based portal for admin login. Business and group travels can be easily managed from over here. Apart from trip counts and client counts, users can also check out information about upcoming trips, as well as view graphical representations of clients and trips (monthwise). Users and trips can be created quickly, and uploading travel documents is a matter of minutes.

In addition to secure cloud storage of important travel data and documents, Smartrips needed to have easy searchability – to be of real use to business users. Hussain agreed, and it was finalised that users will be able to look for any trips or documents directly from the dashboard. Ease of usage is, I feel, a strong factor behind the sustained popularity of Smarttrips.

Right from the start, we had plans to make Smarttrips an effective branding tool for travel businesses. That’s why the overall backend was made customisable (for branding elements to be used). The process of adding new documents is pretty much straightforward, and all trips are arranged alphabetically – for quicker and easier access.

Smarttrips For Travelers

For all the advantages and cool features that Smartrips has on offer for professional travel companies, its benefits for the random Joe…the individual traveller…cannot be glossed over. It’s an app that totally takes out the uncertainty factor out of vacation trips.

It’s not only about storing travel documents digitally and accessing them as and when required, as far as the utilities of the Smarttrips app are concerned. Users can also create and maintain travel diaries, have their very own travel checklists, view mobile travel guides and maps, and even have mobile check-ins. All the things that travelers might need…right at their fingertips!

Yet another advantage of this innovative mobile travel wallet app is the personalised trip reports that can be generated from it. The ‘live currency conversion’ feature also comes in handy.

The Role of APIs

The API logic or the business logic for this mobile app for travelers was constituted around the data for each particular user (at the app end). All the raw files (for instance, images) were stored on the server. The overall app database contained all the information on all users, together with important file paths and other data.

The main function of APIs in Smarttrips is quick and efficient manipulation of JSON data to enhance the readability, and in turn, usability of the application. The PHP scripting language was used to develop and implement the API logic. The APIs collectively accumulated all data, converted it to JSON, and then parsed the JSON data to find and display the information of a single user . The entire process was fast, accurate, and delivered real convenience to end-users. After all, no one wants to get into travel document-related troubles while on a trip!

The presence of APIs also adds an extra layer of security to this new iOS travel app. Every time an existing user logs in on the application, a secret key/API key gets generated. For all new requests, these API keys are sent to authenticate the users on the server.

On the official website of Smarttrips ( http://www.smarttrips.com.au/ ), users can request to attend a pre-recorded webinar – to familiarise themselves with the main features and benefits of the app. We have recently updated the application ( v.2.0.6 of the iOS version and v.1.0.16 of the Android version are currently available ) – with select new features and enhancements.

Smarttrips is available for free download at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/smarttrips-smarter-travel/id1190242297 (iOS version) and https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.au.smarttrips&hl=en_IN (Android version). It is available in multiple languages apart from English, like Japanese, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. We had previously tasted success with apps in the travel category…and Smarttrips is definitely one of the most interesting ( and successful ) projects our team has worked on.

Travel + Leisure / David Hattan

Owning a dependable suitcase is already a game changer for easeful travel, but any piece of luggage can be improved drastically with the addition of the right organizers. Travel organizers, from packing cubes to cosmetic bags, can help maximize space within your bags by neatly compartmentalizing items, preventing over-packing, and ensuring that every inch of your suitcase is utilized effectively. This not only allows you to pack more efficiently, but also helps keep your belongings easily accessible. Without organizers, even the best packed suitcase can transform into chaos after a week on the road. Meanwhile, the dedicated compartments of organizers help keep your clothes, toiletries, jewelry and more in their intended spaces no matter how many times you unpack and repack.

Since the world of travel organizers is incredibly vast, we’ve rounded up some of the best in each category, from shoe bags to innovative compression bags, to tame the unruly chaos of clothes, toiletries, and accessories. Say goodbye to the tangled mess and hello to a meticulously organized suitcase, paving the way for a journey where every item always finds its perfect place.

Best Packing Cubes

Gonex compression packing cubes.

The compression capability and high-quality construction make these packing cubes a must.

They aren’t technically waterproof.

What sets the Gonex Compression Packing Cubes apart is their ability to maximize packing efficiency beyond the standard. Their robust zippers not only make compressing the cubes a breeze but also nod at the longevity of these organizers, thanks to their durable construction and stitchwork.

Despite the non-waterproof nylon material, our tests revealed that they still repel water when a bit is splashed on the exterior. Coupled with the added protection of a suitcase, this ensures that the contents, particularly clothing, remain dry during travel.

An additional highlight is the user-friendly design, featuring convenient handles on the top of each cube. Tips for Buying Travel Organizers

Consider what you’re packing.

Before investing in travel organizers, it's essential to take a thoughtful inventory of what you own and carefully consider your packing habits. Understanding the types and sizes of items you typically carry in your luggage will help you choose organizers that best suit your needs.

Consider the variety of belongings you travel with, from clothing and accessories to gadgets and toiletries, and assess the dimensions of your luggage. This necessary evaluation ensures that the organizers you select will align with your packing style and the available space in your bags. By taking stock of your possessions and packing preferences, you can make the best decisions about the types and sizes of organizers that will maximize efficiency and keep your belongings neatly arranged during your travels.

Opt for high-quality materials

Another crucial factor that demands your consideration when it comes to travel organizers is materiality. The choice of material significantly influences the organizers' durability, weight, and flexibility. Make sure to assess your specific needs and preferences before selecting between options like lightweight fabrics for easy maneuverability, or sturdier materials if you have delicate or especially pricey belongings.

Water-resistant or waterproof materials may be essential for those venturing somewhere rainy or rugged, helping them to safeguard the contents of their luggage from unexpected weather conditions. Investing in organizers that have high-quality zippers (we’re partial to YKK), handles, and seams can provide longevity to your organizers — making them a smarter investment than those that are merely attractive or lower in price.

Prioritize additional built-in organization

Finally, before purchasing your travel organizers, make sure to assess which ones have the correct quantity and type of interior compartments and dividers for the items you need to store. All organizers are designed with purposeful compartments and pockets, but only the ones that actually have the correct built-in storage potential will enhance efficiency and accessibility during your journeys. Looking at the number of pockets and pouches on an organizer prior to purchase, and where on the organizer they are located, will help save you time and money in the long run.

Likely, yes. Travel organizers can significantly enhance your travel experience by keeping your belongings neatly arranged and easily accessible. They help prevent the frustration of rummaging through a disorganized suitcase, saving you time and effort during packing and unpacking. With dedicated compartments for various items, travel organizers not only maximize space but also contribute to a more efficient and enjoyable journey, making them a valuable addition to any traveler's toolkit.

It depends on what kind of suitcase you’re using. Pack your luggage organizers strategically to maximize their effectiveness. For example, consider placing smaller organizers within the mesh pockets or other dedicated compartments of your suitcase for easy access to essentials like toiletries or chargers. Make sure you’re packing toiletry bags in your checked luggage if they have liquids containers over 3.4 ounces. Jewelry organizers and other high value items should usually stay with you in your carry-on. For larger organizers, such as packing cubes, position them within the main compartment to keep clothing neatly organized and prevent excessive shifting during travel.

How To Organize Travel Documents With These 5 Easy Tips

Having your travel documents organized is a simple but important activity. Organizing yourself and your travel companions (whether it be family or friends) can be stressful. Making sure you have all the essential documents for travel organized in an easy, useful, and efficient way can take away that little bit of stress.

We have 5 great tips on how to organize your travel documents, which we’ll delve into deeper below:

  • Always have pens handy
  • Save and print the documents as soon as you receive them
  • Save your documents electronically
  • Send your full set of travel documents to your travel companion
  • Use handy travel organizers for your paper documents

Staying organized with travel documents is super important. We really believe these simple but effective tips can make your travel run more smoothly and most importantly you can concentrate on having an amazing holiday than stressing about trying to find a ‘misplaced’ document when exactly when you need it.

Which Travel Documents to Remember?

So, first thing’s first, which travel documents do you need to remember? Of course, this can be very specific to the trip you’re taking, but of course the essential ones we’ve listed below:

  • Driving License (if applicable)
  • Visa (if required for the country you’re visiting)
  • Record of vaccinations (if required for the country you’re visiting)
  • Boarding Passes
  • Flight Details
  • Airport Parking Documents
  • Lounge Card (if applicable)
  • Rental Car Documents (if you’re hiring a car in the country you’re visiting)
  • Hotel Reservations
  • Transfer Information to your Accommodation
  • Pre-booked Excursion Documents
  • Travel Insurance
  • Emergency Contact Information

If you’re going to experiencing something specific on your holiday, such as going diving, remember your diving certificates.

1. Always Have Pens Handy

This tip is probably the most simple tip but easily forgotten. In this advanced world of technology we live in with more and more things being transitioned to online, it’s easy to forget something so simple.

If you’re traveling internationally, you will almost always be required to fill out an arrival card on the plane just before you are due to land. Surprisingly, the airport crew never seem to hand out pens for you to actually be able to complete the forms.

You never know when you’ll need it. But it’s useful on the plane journey as well if you want to make a note of anything, complete puzzles etc.

And it goes without saying to keep at least two pens on you, just in case one decides it’s not gonna work. Especially with the arrival cards, they can take some time to fill out if you’re traveling with a big family and you only have one pen between you, it’s a bit inconvenient. Take a few and you can spread this task out.

2. Save and Print the Documents as Soon as you Receive them

When you’ve booked a holiday, you’re likely to receive some travel documents, such as flight details, travel insurance, itinerary by email. As soon as you receive them, SAVE and PRINT them! We cannot recommend this enough!

Your personal emails can get so clogged up with junk very quickly. Then trying to find the emails just before you’re about to travel or even on the spot when you need them can be a nightmare. Not to mention, electronic copies on devices can be great, but it’s always great to have a backup paper copy. What happens if your device runs out of battery or you lose your device?

As you receive the documents, once printed, keep them aside in a pile until you receive everything, then they’re ready to ready to organize.

travel document storage app

3. Save your Travel Documents Electronically

So, as mentioned above, a lot of the travel documents you’ll need will likely be sent to you electronically. As well as having a paper copy, it’s useful to have an electronic one too. We suggest to keep these super organized to do the following:

  • Create a folder for your trip in your email account, for example, Sri Lanka – October 2020.
  • Then create subfolders within this category, such as ‘Flight Details’, ‘Travel Insurance’, ‘Hotel Reservations’.
  • Move your emails into the relevant folder.
  • That’s it! Everything is super organized and easy to find when you need it in under 30 seconds.

If you’re planning a long trip, for example, a month or so and you’ll be staying at many different accommodations and taking several flights, we’d recommend naming your subfolder by dates. Then you know exactly where to go to when you need to, without making the search harder if you have too many emails in one category.

So, another great thing about technology is the number of great travel apps out there. Specifically, for keeping your travel documents organized all in one place, we recommend TripIt , as our travel organization app of choice. It’s fantastic at keeping all your important travel documents in one place. Why do we choose TripIt?

  • Simple – simply send your confirmation emails to [email protected] and it will create a master itinerary
  • Flexible – as you book further items, continue to send to the email and it updates accordingly to keep your plans up to date
  • Easy to use and doesn’t take up a lot of your time
  • Sync with your calendar
  • Share your itinerary – you can share your itinerary with others through the app, email or texts
  • Upgrade option – if you want additional features, you can upgrade to TripIt Pro which costs $49/year

If you want to find out more, check out the TripIt website here .

4. Send your Full Set of Travel Documents to your Travel Companion

If you’re not traveling alone, we’d recommend sending all your travel documents to your travel companion. Get them to setup up the email folders as described above. This works great for a couple/family. It’s just another step to ensure a backup plan in case the main person with the travel documentation loses their device or their device runs out of battery.

5. Use Handy Travel Organizers for your Paper Documents

After you’ve printed out all your documents, you realize you may have a lot, especially if you’re planning to go away for more than a week. Rather than just shoving all these items into a folder, there are some great items on the market to help organize your paper documents better.

We tend to use two items. One that includes documents we will need at the airport and another that holds all the other information we will require from leaving the destination airport onwards.

Know when you need your travel documents, If you have an idea of what you need when you need it, it’s going to make your life easier. Here’s a guide anyway.

At the airport

  • Record of vaccinations (if required for the country you’re visiting

We use the Vemingo Travel Wallet – RFID Blocking Passport Wallet . It’s compact, light, and easy to organize your travel documents we mentioned above. If you want to check out our review on this item, click here . We’ve also reviewed some other items which are great for organizing your travel in other ways. If you want to read out reviews of these, click here .

Leaving the destination airport

As these tend to just be A4 size paper documents, there are so many options available that would be sufficient for organizing these easily. There are many folders that offer s eparate compartments and tabs to be able to label each compartment. We’d recommend getting one of these!

And the great thing is, they’re relatively inexpensive but super useful and you can use them time and time again. As they’re usually made of plastic, they’ll be waterproof too, so you don’t have to worry about your documents becoming damaged.

We would recommend dividing the documents by topic and chronological order. This can easily fit into your hand luggage along with your travel wallet (described above) and ready for whenever you need it.

We also recommend throwing away your paper documents when you no longer require them. That just makes it easier to find items that you actually need. Make sure it is something you definitely don’t need before throwing it away though!

It’s also one less thing to sort out when you return home from your trip. There so many other things to do like unpack, one less thing on your to-do list definitely helps you a little along the way!

So in Summary…

We hope these simple but useful tips will help you with organizing your travel documents. Some of these may be obvious, but with everything else you’re trying to organize at the same time, they can easily be forgotten.

10 Apps That Will Make The Most Of Your Vacation In 2024

I f you've ever spent time at a networking event, made small talk at your kids' soccer games, or scrolled through a dating app, you'll know that "travel" is something almost everyone will tell you they enjoy. Couple that with an attachment to our smartphones that borders on co-dependent, and it's no surprise to learn that travel apps are a hot commodity. Some of the best innovations in travel come in the form of apps. Staying in touch with people at home, travel planning, staying organized on the road, or connecting with other travelers? Not only is there an app for that, there are many apps for that.

To help you sort through the plethora of what's out there, here are some travel-ready apps to make your vacation a blast. We've sourced suggestions from people who travel for a living and those who leave their local area only rarely, so no matter how often you jet-set, there is an app for you.

If your cell plan doesn't include international roaming, you can get slammed with steep fees for using mobile data outside your own country.

There are a few ways to get around roaming charges, including buying a local SIM card for the country you are traveling in, using a Wi-Fi stick , or investing in a dual SIM phone, like those from Samsung, Apple, or Google. One of the easiest and cheapest options though, is an eSIM app like Airalo . Airalo was one of the first in the eSIM game and continues to be popular with travelers. Fans of the app point to how easy it is to download and get started quickly, and how much it saves in fees. On the other hand, some users have noticed a discrepancy in how well it works in different countries. One reviewer on TrustPilot states "We do NOT recommend this plan given the extremely poor performance in Vietnam" despite noting excellent service in Hong Kong.

Airalo is a paid service, available on the App Store and on Google Play.

Google Maps is often the default app travelers reach for when navigating new territory. It's a trusted resource for a lot of reasons, including the ease of finding reviews and info for even very small businesses. But it's not the only map app out there, nor is it the best in every situation. The main advantage of Maps.me over Google Maps is that it is based on user-generated information. Particularly for folks who are getting around on foot, this "boots on the ground" approach is excellent and more direct than reporting problems to Google Maps . It also means that if you find a cool place on your travels and want to make sure other travelers can find it, you can add it to a map.

Like Google Maps and other useful way-finding apps, you can download maps and bookmark points of interest for offline use, although the background information on locations is not as robust as on Google Maps. Maps.me also allows you to access various modes of transportation while offline, which Google doesn't.

Maps.me is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Cash's position as king is increasingly precarious. On your travels, you'll find cashless options in places you might not expect. The mass availability of mobile payment platforms like Square means you may be able to whip out your phone or card at Swiss coffee carts or Mexican street vendors. Wise (formerly Transferwise) lets you move between currencies seamlessly. Wise lets you operate in 40 currencies, which is particularly handy if you are traveling to several different countries. They advertise charges that are less than the major banks. However, some users have complained about complications with money transfers, so be forewarned if you intend to use this app for sending money.

Of note to travelers is the option to get an actual bank card that can function as an international debit card with a nominal conversion fee (not all bank cards can pay by debit in countries other than your home base.) Or, save a step and scan your phone to pay from your Wise account.

Wise is available on the App Store and from Google Play. There is no charge to download the app, but fees are charged for some banking activities.

If you are going to be traveling from place to place on your vacation, you will want the Rome2Rio app on your phone. Enter your destination and departure location, and the app spits out the options and approximate costs for each leg of your journey. For instance, if you are in Edmonton, Canada, and want to get to the Thai island of Ko Yao Yai, the app will suggest six options, labeling the best, cheapest, and fastest combination of flight, minibus, and ferry. You can't purchase tickets through the app, although there are links to book accommodation that take you to Booking.com. Being able to purchase travel fares through the app would make things easier, especially if they were offered in a package, but the absence of that feature means you can investigate and compare prices from different booking operators , so we are putting it in the win column.

Rome2Rio is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Rick Steves Audio Europe

Rick Steves is recognized as a top voice in travel guides. His down-to-earth approach to travel has endeared multitudes of followers to him, spawning an industry of books, television shows, and a sprawling web presence that features how-to guides, articles, and an active travelers' forum. On top of all that, he has a free app for self-guided walking tours through many of Europe's top sights called Rick Steves Audio Europe . Reviewers of the app give it a high rating (4.7 on Google Play and 4.3 on the App Store) using superlatives like "This app is GOLD," and comparing the quality of the tours to paid audio tours. On the downside, it is difficult to sync the app on multiple devices, so if you are in a group you may all be at slightly different parts of the tour, which can be mildly annoying. There are a bunch of tour sites, with more added periodically.

The audio tours and accompanying maps are downloadable, so you don't need to worry about burning through mobile data or needing to rely on Wi-Fi. Rick Steve Audio Europe is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

How many trips come vividly back to life in your mind just by thinking about that one excellent bowl of Cacio e Pepe pasta or sun-drenched sip of a Paloma? Exploring a place through its flavors and discovering new spots to eat is a beloved part of travel. In Europe, TheFork (the French version is called LaForchette) is the go-to app for crowd-sourced restaurant reviews. Previously, the app also covered Australia, but at the start of 2024, it was announced they will be pulling out of Oz.

You can find Michelin-starred restaurants with months-long wait lists or little hole-in-the-wall spots by searching the name of the eating establishment, the city or neighborhood you want to eat in, or the kind of cuisine you are craving.

The app is worthy of its space on your phone just for the restaurant listings and reviews, but if you want to explore more of the capabilities, there are ways to expand its usefulness. You can make reservations, register to collect points, access discounts and specials at select spots, and pay through the app. TheFork is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Looking for a little love on the road? The Fairytrail app might be the ticket to romance (or ROAMance) you are looking for. Aimed at digital nomads and van life devotees, the app is a nice addition to the dating lives of travelers of all stripes. Members are evaluated and assigned a fairytale character similar to enneagram-slash-Myers-Briggs personality types, which is a new and novel approach compared with other iPhone dating apps or Android dating apps .

Because the app is focused on people with nomadic lifestyles, matches are location-independent. The idea is that users of the app will be willing to travel to each other to meet and date. There is a setting that allows an extra layer of matching: dream places to visit. If you so choose, before chatting with a match you need to have an overlapping "bucket-list" destination. Previously, this was an unavoidable step but became an optional setting after it was changed in response to frustration expressed by reviewers. The app is being redesigned in 2024 and soliciting feedback from users. Stay tuned, it seems more happy endings are in store! Fairytrails is free to download with in-app purchases and is available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Price Scanner And Converter

A very unpleasant aspect of vacationing in another country is coming home to a shocking credit card bill. Part of the problem is the tendency of holidaymakers to spend like money isn't real, but the other problem is how difficult it is to calculate prices into your own currency. Sure, you can come up with shortcuts to do quick math, but that gives you an estimate rather than an exact cost. To help, there are many different currency converter apps out there, with features like real-time rate calculation and offline capability. The somewhat clunky-named Price Scanner and Converter takes it one step further by using your phone's camera to scan prices and display them automatically in your preferred currency (out of 150 global currencies.) New iPhone cameras also have a similar capability, but it isn't as seamless a process as using this app.

This price scanning app isn't presently available on Google Play, although there are similar apps to be found. The reviews are pretty overwhelmingly mediocre, so if you are on team Android, your best bet may be to download a regular currency converter and enter in prices the old-fashioned way.

Downloading the Price Scanner and Converter is free from the App Store.

Searching through your emails for confirmations and itineraries isn't an efficient way to access your travel information. And good luck if you have used your work email for some of your planning and your personal email for others. What if you are offline when you need to find your tour details? Nightmare fuel. Tripit has created a simple user experience, allowing you to forward all those endless travel planning emails to be arranged into an easily accessible itinerary in a single spot, which you can access from any of your devices.

Other features of this include the ability to load PDFs, QR codes, and other travel documents to your Tripit travel folder. There are helpful navigation tools, like airport maps, neighborhood safety ratings, and nearby places. You can share your travel plans and sync them to your calendar. For $49 a year (or a free 30-day trial) you can upgrade to Tripit Pro for enhanced travel aid, including notifications to help keep you on track and on time.

Tripit is free to download from the App Store and from Google Play, and you can upgrade to the premium Tripit Pro on the Tripit website or in the app.

Mobile Passport Control

The latest app from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol goes by the wildly creative name, " Mobile Passport Control ." It's a no-nonsense app with a no-nonsense name that allows users to streamline the customs experience. Rather than filling out declarations forms, users enter their information into the app and send it to border officials so they can access it as soon as they get to customs. You can do this immediately upon arrival, say as your plane is taxiing to the gate.

The app is for United States citizens and Canadians with a B-1 or B-2 visitor visa who are entering the USA at one of 33 American airports, 11 preclearance sites, and four seaports. It works in tandem with your passport, but it doesn't replace it.

As a bonus, some sites allow those with the Mobile Passport Control app to use their own (almost always shorter!) line or expedited Global Entry lines at passport control. You can enter family members on the same app and there is no approval process, just download and go.

A previous iteration of the app had a premium, paid version, but this is no longer the case. The app is free on the App Store and Google Play.

Where is Tropical Storm Debby?

Forecasters expect a developing system to form into a  tropical storm  that could cause flooding across parts of Florida this weekend.

Potential Tropical Cyclone Four   – which is expected to form into Tropical Storm Debby – could drench the state with up to a foot of rain in some areas this weekend, according to the  National Hurricane Center . Flash and urban flooding as well as some isolated river flooding will all be possible through Wednesday morning.

Florida's west coast was under tropical storm watches and warnings Friday as the system neared. The center warned that some areas could possibly face tropical-storm-force winds and even a 1- to 3-foot storm surge.

Damon C. Williams is a Philadelphia-based journalist reporting on trending topics across the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Tropical Storm Debby unleashes widespread flooding across Southeast: Live updates

Through friday, debby could dump 10-20 inches of rainfall, and some isolated areas could receive up to 25 inches, the national weather service said..

CORRECTIONS & CLARIFICATIONS: This article has been updated to reflect that a 12-year-old girl died in a Sunday vehicle crash, according to a corrected Florida Highway Patrol news release.

As Tropical Storm Debby continued its dayslong crawl through the Southeast on Tuesday, coastal areas from northern Florida to the Carolinas were inundated with rainfall, leaving streets underwater as officials ordered evacuations, conducted rescues and confirmed at least two tornadoes.

Forecasters say the conditions were only expected to worsen this week as the storm unleashes historic and potentially “catastrophic” flooding across the region.

Debby could dump 10-20 inches of rainfall through Friday, and some isolated areas could receive up to 25 inches, the National Weather Service said . By the middle of the week, bands of heavy rain will move northward from North Carolina to the Mid-Atlantic, the weather service warned: "Action should be taken to prep for impacts from high water."

Debby is moving east-northeast at a mere 3 mph, according to the latest National Hurricane Center advisory , which allows it to soak everything on a path that's expected to continue up to the New England states late this week. By the time it's done, Debby may be the wettest landfalling hurricane ever .

“Debby has been meandering at a snail’s pace, but it will blast to the Northeast like a rocket later this week,” AccuWeather meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.

Debby tracker: Tropical Storm could bring 'catastrophic' rainfall to Southeast

Developments:

∎ Officials in Suwannee County, in northern Florida, are urgently warning residents to evacuate ahead of rivers expected to flood in the region. "Residents in river areas should make a decision to evacuate now," the Sheriff's Office said.

∎ Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin declared a state of emergency even though the impacts of the storm are not expected until late Thursday or early Friday, an indication of how much damage Debby could cause. "There is the potential for strong winds, heavy rains, and possible flooding across regions of the Commonwealth,” Youngkin said.

∎ Millions across Georgia and the Carolinas were under flash flood warnings and watches that will remain active into the latter half of the week, the weather service said.

∎Charleston Mayor William Cogswell said Tuesday that the city will extend its curfew until at least Wednesday morning.

Two confirmed tornadoes touch down in South Carolina

The National Weather Service office in Charleston, South Carolina, confirmed two tornadoes spun by Debby, one Tuesday in Moncks Corner, about 30 miles north of Charleston, and the other one Monday in Edisto Beach, a tourist town on the state's southern coast.

Moncks Corner Mayor Thomas Hamilton said the twister caused minor injuries and some damage to commercial but not residential structures, WCBD-TV reported.

Colleton County officials reported no injuries but "some property damage and several power poles down'' from the Edisto Beach twister.

Tornado watches were in effect Tuesday across parts of the Carolinas.

In Georgia and SC, a month's rain in a day

From North Florida to the Carolinas, local and state officials reported widespread flooding Tuesday as Debby dumped a foot of rain in some areas. Cities including Charleston, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia, established curfews, ordered evacuations, closed office buildings, opened shelters and urged residents to stay indoors during the multi-day deluge.

Within the last 24 hours, parts of Georgia and South Carolina received more than a month's worth of rain, according to the National Weather Service. The storm has trapped people in their vehicles and damaged homes as winds uproot trees and knock over utility poles. On Monday night, at least three suspected tornadoes caused damage throughout southeastern areas of South Carolina.

Debby made landfall on Monday along the Big Bend coast of Florida as a Category 1 hurricane and moved across the northeast region of the peninsula, turning streets into rivers, causing widespread power outages and contributing to at least five deaths. Hundreds were evacuated from coastal communities as the storm surge pushed several feet of water inland, overtaking cars and triggering water rescues.

Dam in South Carolina has 'potential to fail'; officials order evacuations

Local officials in Colleton County, South Carolina, warned that a dam “has the potential to fail” and began evacuating residents in the area.

The warning about the vulnerable McGrady Dam, about 7 miles southwest of Walterboro, was issued by the Colleton Fire Department at 8 a.m. The National Weather Service, citing Colleton County Emergency officials, said water was overtopping the dam and that the structure “could fail at any time.”

“An evacuation notice has been sent to residents downstream of the dam,” the weather service wrote. “If the dam fails, flash flooding will occur.”

Much of Colleton County and the surrounding area has been soaked by as much as a foot of rain, and more was expected Tuesday. Flash flood warnings and other related advisories were widespread across South Carolina.

You thought Harvey was wet? Debby may double rain total

Hurricane Harvey will long be remembered as the monster rainmaker that overwhelmed Houston in 2017, at one point pouring more than 40 inches of rain over less than two days in some areas of Southeast Texas.

Debby could end up being wetter, maybe even twice as much.

Though it lost hurricane status a mere three hours after making landfall early Monday in northwest Florida, now-Tropical Storm Debby continues to cause major damage by unloading copious amounts of rain in the Southeast U.S., and it's not projected to be done until drenching eastern states all the way up to New England late this week.

By that point, Debby may have dropped upwards of 50 trillion gallons of rain from Florida to Maine, the most ever by a hurricane that made landfall, meteorologist Ryan Maue said. By comparison, Harvey delivered more than 27 trillion gallons of rain to Texas.

Power outages abound in the Southeast

As Tropical Storm Debby's impacts stretch northward, power outages have been adding up in Georgia and South Carolina while authorities work to restore power across north Florida.

Nearly 80,000 homes and businesses in Florida were still without power Tuesday afternoon, according to Poweroutage.us . The blackouts were concentrated in the Big Bend region, where the storm came ashore as a hurricane at 7 a.m. Monday before crossing the state and into Georgia.

Along with outages in Florida, about 7,000 utility customers were without power in Georgia and 6,000 in South Carolina. Officials in the states have assured residents that appropriate resources were staged to immediately begin restoring power when the storm clears.

Experts downgrade hurricane forecast − slightly

A rare bit of good news: Top meteorologists from Colorado State University on Tuesday reduced the number of storms expected this Atlantic hurricane season, from 25 to 23.

All other numbers remained the same from the team's July forecast, including the predicted number of major hurricanes, six. (A major hurricane, defined as a Category 3 or higher, has sustained winds of at least 111 mph.)

The downgrade in the number of predicted named storms was because of the weeks-long lull in storm activity in July. "We anticipate a well above-average probability for major hurricane landfalls along the continental United States coastline and in the Caribbean," CSU said.

Tropical Storm Debby's rainfall totals so far

More than a foot of rain has fallen in parts of South Carolina, while rainfall totals in Georgia reached over 10 inches, according to rainfall reports from the National Weather Service office in Charleston, South Carolina. Below are some of the highest totals recorded so far.

  • Ruskin: 21.7 inches
  • Palm Harbor: 20.34 inches
  • Parrish: 18.86 inches
  • Sarasota: 17.78 inches
  • Pinellas Park: 14.04 inches
  • Rincon: 11.09 inches
  • Blitchton: 10.46 inches
  • Springfield: 10.38 inches
  • Port Wentworth: 9.28 inches
  • Savannah: 8.50 inches

South Carolina:

  • Green Pond: 14.02 inches
  • Edisto Beach: 12.42 inches
  • Beaufort: 11.16 inches
  • Bennetts Point: 11.10 inches
  • Charleston: 11.00 inches

Storm traps South Carolina family in leaking house as roof caves in

A deluge of rain from the storm trapped Beatriz Wheeler and her three children in her home in Hampton, South Carolina, around 80 miles west of Charleston, as water poured through holes in the walls and parts of the ceiling collapsed.

The rain started on Monday at around 4 p.m., Wheeler said. By Tuesday morning, the situation was dire – her roof had sprouted at least seven leaks. "Parts of our ceiling are caving in," she said. "We're managing, but there's a lot of damage."

Wheeler's husband, who barely reached the bank where he works amid the heavy rains Tuesday morning, couldn't return after both sides of their street flooded. "We're currently discussing how he's going to get home," said Wheeler, 28.

Meanwhile, her parents faced imminent evacuation after a dam near their home in Walterboro, a town around 30 miles away, was at risk of failure. "If they're forced to evacuate, they'll probably try to come this way to bunker down with us," she said.

Tropical Storm Debby death toll rises to 5

Officials have reported at least five deaths in connection with Debby since Sunday evening.

In the southern Georgia city of Moultrie, a tree fell onto a home, killing a 19-year-old, Gov. Brian Kemp said Tuesday.

Near Tampa, a man driving a semi-truck was killed after he lost control on an interstate that had been soaked in the rain, according to National Weather Service reports.

In Fanning Springs, about 35 miles east from where Debby made landfall, a 13-year-old boy was killed by a fallen tree that landed on a mobile home.

On Sunday night, as Debby’s outer bands were lashing much of the Florida Peninsula, a woman and a 12-year-old girl died in a single-vehicle crash in Dixie County, near where the storm eventually came ashore. A 14-year-old boy, who was in the vehicle when it crashed, was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries.

Several Florida waterways at major flood level

The Manatee River at the Rye Bridge in southwest Florida broke a record Monday, hitting a level of 20.12 feet, surpassing the previous mark of 20 feet set on July 21, 1962.

Manatee County opened a dam to release water from Lake Manatee to try to "maintain appropriate water levels" and they began dropping but remained at major flood stage.

That's one of at least 10 locations in Florida where waterways are at or above major flood levels, which are also reported in three rivers west of Savannah.

Flooding in Cedar Key, but less damage than Idalia caused

As the storm passed over Cedar Key, an island town off Florida's Gulf Coast, it partially blew the roof off Michael Presley Bobbitt's clam dock and damaged a nearby boat "pretty significantly," Bobbitt said.

Bobbitt, a clam farmer known locally as "the clambassador," said the storm also flooded Cedar Key's downtown with shin-deep water and ripped the roof off a local restaurant. Still, the damage was far less than what Hurricane Idalia caused last year.

"While some of our businesses were inundated and a few houses were, overall, the damage is pretty moderate to minor," he said.

By Tuesday, businesses were open as usual, Bobbitt said. "The whole island is out today,'' he said. "We're all out working, helping our neighbors, putting it back together."

Where is Tropical Storm Debby?

Tropical Storm Debby was located 10 miles east of Savannah and 70 miles southwest of Charleston, according to the National Hurricane Center ’s 5 p.m. ET update.

The storm is moving northeast at 3 mph, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 40 mph, the hurricane center said. Tropical-storm-force winds close to 40 mph extend outward up to 205 miles from the center of the storm.

Debby is projected to move offshore, where it will drift through Wednesday before making a second landfall over South Carolina on Thursday. Debby is forecast to strengthen as it moves north along the Atlantic coast, the hurricane center said.

At least 3 suspected tornadoes reported in South Carolina

There were at least three reported tornadoes in South Carolina on Monday night as the storm crawled northward, bringing a barrage of severe weather across the Southeast.

In Edisto Beach, 50 miles southwest of Charleston, a tornado touched down and caused “some property damage,” knocking down power poles and toppling trees, according to a post on X by the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office . No injuries were reported.

In Charleston County, dispatchers reported a tornado that caused damage to at least one house, according to National Weather Service reports .

In Berkeley County, emergency services reported a tornado near the town of Moncks Corner, about 30 miles north of Charleston. An Applebee's restaurant was reportedly damaged and power poles were toppled, some onto cars, the weather service said.

What makes Debby such a treacherous storm?

Debby is a large and slow-moving storm, making the system particularly dangerous as record amounts of rain inundate many areas, especially along the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina this week.

The storm’s center was forecast to move near Savannah on Tuesday night and drag along the South Carolina coast on Thursday night. "Multiple days of very, very heavy rainfall" are possible, National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan said.

The National Weather Service estimates rainfall totals could reach up to 25 inches or more in isolated locations along the coast through Friday. The weather service office in Charleston, South Carolina, warned of "potentially historic rainfall."

Debby shows there's more to a storm than wind scale

As Debby strengthened in the Gulf and drew closer to Florida, hurricane experts and scientists say it was a classic example of how the wind scale categories used to describe hurricanes can fall short of telling the whole story.

"This is another example of a storm where the primary impacts are going to be from water, rather than wind," said James Franklin, a retired branch chief of the hurricane specialist unit at the National Hurricane Center.

Jennifer Collins, a professor in the Geosciences School at the University of South Florida, has studied how to better communicate all of a storm’s threats.

Looking at the forecasts for up to 25 inches of rain in isolated locations between Savannah and Charleston, Collins told USA TODAY she’s very concerned about the likelihood of “catastrophic flooding" and hopes people will look at all of the hurricane center's forecast products.  Read more here .

This app is excellent

**update-they changed the name from scanpro and have now gone to subscription payment. It used to be 10-20 bucks and you were done now they want 3 dollars a month. My glowing review is going to change if they don’t grandfather in all of us who purchased pro. I hate subscriptions. Charge me a one time price for your software, one that is fair to you the developer-I don’t expect it to be cheap, but please stay away from these monthly subscriptions. Easily keep all receipts together from travel and organize in iCloud. Easily make copies of all important documents and organize in iCloud folder. Use your phone to scan and immediately access it from your mac or iPad. Fantastic app. One of my favorites. A must have. Business travel tip: on a business trip FORCE yourself to scan every receipt the second you get it, whether at hotel checkout, restaurant, airport, gas station, everything you spend. It takes two seconds to do this. Just make it part of your routine —sign the check at dinner, pull out your phone and scan. Two seconds. Set up the scans to be named with the date automatically and you can add additional words at time of scan or later. If you do this, it makes doing expense reports or invoicing an absolute breeze. Everything is in a folder on your icloud, accessible from your mac or anywhere. I use to dread gathering receipts and doing expense reports. Not anymore. This app makes it easy.

Developer Response ,

Hello Stuart779, Thanks for sharing this detailed feedback about the SwiftScan app. Should you encounter issues with any of the paid features in the app, please don't hesitate to contact us at [email protected] so we can take a look into it.

Powerful and easy ocr. Want a more robust import feature.

Thank you for making a really nice app. Mainly, I am looking for a scan/ocr app to easily apply ocr to existing documents on iOS. SwiftScan does it and does it very well: powerful ocr compared to my experience with scanner pro and scan hero. I love the in-app text search after ocr. I wish for a more robust import feature, where I can easily import in SwiftScan from all three sources (camera scan capture, existing photos, existing documents) into one file, like PDFpen scan+ by Smile did very well before they discontinued ocr. Compiling scans from different sources into one file is currently a pain. For your R&D reference, the first step in my workflow is compiling the scan from different sources like hand-written notes, photos and existing docs (add, remove, reorder pages and make light edit). Then ocr my compilation, export the file, create a hyper-link to the file, reference that link on calendar, continue to work and add to the file at a later time from again the same three sources of camera, photos and documents. It will be so nice if I can make SwiftScan my one and only stop in compiling my scans/notes. I appreciate any insights and tips.

Updated Review

The developer contacted me and clarified that they had not intentionally taken any features from my original version and there must have been a bug or glitch in the program. I do have all of my features back and am a satisfied customer. PREVIOUS UPDATE: I had complained that features I had paid for had been moved to the subscription version only. I started using the new Notes app instead. I noticed that many many others were complaining of the same thing. We were talking tonight about feeling ripped off and I went into the app to show friends the issues we had…. I was surprised to find that all of my previous features are BACK! It appears at least for now that the authors have reconsidered and realized that they shot themselves in the foot. My review has now gone back to the opinion that this is the best scanning app I have used for my phone. If the authors come up with some cool new features, I will probably be willing to pay (once - not a $10 subscription) to upgrade. Thank you writers of the app for rethinking the business model. You have a happy customer back.
Hi there, thanks for your review. Just so you know, we never removed any of your paid permissions on purpose (and we would never do that). There may have been a bug or a server outage that was causing that. We appreciate your kind words.
