Olivia Rodrigo

Nearly six months into her whirlwind Guts World Tour, Olivia Rodrigo finally landed in her hometown of Los Angeles on Tuesday night (Aug. 13) to perform the first of four dates at the Kia Forum, which she’ll follow with two shows at the soon-to-open Intuit Dome on Aug. 20 and 21.

Olivia Rodrigo Admits Some of Her Past Relationships Were ‘A Little Questionable’

“Oh boy, I’ve been looking forward to this show for a really, really long time,” said Rodrigo as she took the stage, eliciting a cacophony of screams from the sold-out crowd. “Hometown show, baby. It’s very, very special.”

Rodrigo’s first L.A. concert marked the beginning of the end of the North American leg for her current tour. After a nearly month-long break, the megastar will head to Asia in mid-September for a series of dates in Thailand, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore before wrapping the globe-spanning trek in Australia with four shows each in Melbourne and Sydney.

Having already performed the show dozens of times over, Rodrigo and her touring operation are by this point a well-oiled machine, and it showed on Tuesday night. The first Forum concert featured slick, at times “Brutal”-ly effective songs from Rodrigo’s two blockbuster albums, with the star backed by a powerhouse band and eight dancers whose thematic routines dramatized the singer-songwriter’s potent lyrics (one particularly memorable bit of choreography during Rodrigo’s performance of Guts track “Pretty Isn’t Pretty” revolved around hand mirrors).

Throughout, Rodrigo demonstrated a knack for connecting with every section of the audience at the 17,500-capacity venue. This was most notable during a stretch that saw her perform “Logical” and “Enough for You” from a floating crescent moon that revolved slowly around the arena, creating a sense of intimacy with every segment of the fawning crowd.

Below, you can check out five highlights from the sold-out show and a full setlist.

A Little Bit Disney, a Lot Rock-N-Roll

As edgy as some of her music sounds, a strain of the Disney star Rodrigo once was remains. Given her outsized pop stardom, it’s easy to forget that up until 2019, the 21-year-old was best known for her starring role on the squeaky-clean High School Musical: The Musical: The Series , and she retains some of the polished charm she no doubt learned while making her way through the gauntlet of Mouse House stardom.

In a way, Tuesday night’s show illuminated this intriguing dichotomy. Rodrigo is a master at playing to the camera with the sort of larger-than-life facial expressions that seem in part designed to appeal to her youngest fans — even as she liberally (and gleefully) sprinkles her speech with f-bombs. This career arc is represented in the arc of the show itself: While the first half boasts its share of hard-charging tracks like “Bad Idea Right?” and “Vampire,” in the final stretch it becomes a much more rock-forward show, complete with bone-rattling guitar riffs and a steroidal rhythm section. Her performance of late-set tracks like “Brutal” and “All-American Bitch” build up a full head of steam, making a potent case for Rodrigo as a one-of-a-kind pop star who is capable of catering equally well to the High School Musical set and the ‘90s rock-loving parents who once blasted Nirvana , Hole and Pearl Jam through their open car windows.

A Mass Sing-Along

From “Drivers License” to “Vampire,” the capacity crowd at Tuesday night’s show belted the lyrics to Rodrigo’s songs right along with her, reflecting the deep chord the talented songwriter has struck with her (mostly) young fans. More than any other concert in recent memory, the mass sing-along created a unifying energy that belied the size of the venue, serving as a testament to the way Rodrigo’s lyrics can feel both deeply personal and universal all at once.

Paying Tribute to Her Hometown (and In-N-Out)

Rodrigo grew up in the Southern California community of Temecula, located southeast of Los Angeles, before moving to L.A. in middle school after landing a starring role on the Disney Channel sitcom Bizaardvark . That made her first L.A. show something of a homecoming for the globe-trotting star, and she didn’t let that fact — and her fondness for a certain fast-food burger chain — go unmentioned.

“Boy, am I f—ing happy to be in L.A., oh my god!” Rodrigo remarked from the stage before launching into a rendition of her Guts (Spilled) standout “So American.” “You guys, we’ve been on tour for so long, and I got to sleep in my own bed last night, it was amazing. We’ve been all over the place,” she explained. “We got to, like, drink wine in France and eat pasta in Italy, but you know what? It’s so good to be home and have a f—ing In-N-Out burger, for real. That was my first stop after getting home. I literally flew to LAX and then drove to pick up In-N-Out burger.”

Shining a Light on The Breeders

Rodrigo’s opening act on Tuesday night was The Breeders , the ‘90s alt-rock icons who stormed the Billboard Hot 100 with their 1993 single “Cannonball” (the song ultimately peaked at No. 44). That hit served as a centerpiece of the band’s fabulous performance, during which they also busted out a set-closing rendition of “Gigantic” — a highlight of Surfer Rosa , the debut full-length of Breeders frontwoman Kim Deal’s former band the Pixies , co-written with her then-bandmate Black Francis.

Choosing The Breeders as an opening act may seem like an outside-the-box choice for a 21-year-old pop star, but for Rodrigo it makes sense. Though she wasn’t even born when the band reached its career zenith, Rodrigo grew up listening to the ‘90s alt-rock her parents played at home and was heavily influenced by the bands of the era in creating her own music. On Sour and especially Guts , that influence comes through loud and clear, so it’s heartening to see Rodrigo introduce one of the Gen X bands who helped inspire her sound to a brand-new audience.

And The Breeders made the most of the opportunity: The band, which is opening all four Forum shows and previously opened for Rodrigo at Madison Square Garden, played a tight 40-minute set that will doubtless win them a new set of young fans.

A Salute to the Power of the Instagram DM

Just before launching into a performance of Sour track “Happier” while sitting cross-legged on the floor with her guitarist Daisy Spencer, Rodrigo called herself “a wizard at the art of Instagram DM.” That led in to an explanation of how a fateful DM brought her and Sour / Guts producer Dan Nigro together.

“I’ve met so many people that I’ve dated on Instagram DM, some of them a little questionable so maybe that’s not a good example,” Rodrigo began, before explaining how, after catching wind of a “Happier” clip she’d posted online, Nigro reached out to ask if she’d like to work with him. “That was the catalyst for two albums and kind of this show and tonight right here,” she said. “So I have Instagram DM to thank for a whole lot in my life.”

Full Setlist

“Bad Idea Right?” “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl” “Vampire” “Traitor” “Drivers License” “Teenage Dream” “Pretty Isn’t Pretty” “Love Is Embarrassing” “Making the Bed” “Logical” “Enough for You” “Lacy” “So American” “Jealousy, Jealousy” “Happier” “Favorite Crime” “Deja Vu” “The Grudge” “Brutal” “Obsessed” “All-American Bitch” Encore: “Good 4 U” “Get Him Back!”

AJ Sports Surrey Championship 2024 – week 14 review

AJ Sports Surrey Championship 2024 – week 14 review

It was back to limited overs matches for final stretch of the fight for the aj sports surrey championship premier division title. richard spiller checks out week 14’s ups and downs., sutton v reigate priory.

Fabian Cowdrey’s fourth unbeaten century of the season could not prevent Reigate Priory maintaining the pace at the summit, staying 11 points clear.

The former Kent all-rounder made 103no, leading a second wicket partnership worth 93 with Rehan Ratnasapabathy (46), giving Sutton hope of a challenging total when they reached 118-2 with 17 overs still to bat.

Surrey U18 spinner Tommy Bates broke through, taking a return catch to remove the opener which started a slide of five wickets for 51, only Connor Griffin (18no) providing Cowdrey with much back-up in steering Sutton to 213-7. Bates (2-39) and leg-spinner Michael Munday (2-33) were key factors in delivering their 10-over spells.

Reigate’s strength in depth has been a key factor this season, the loss of Richie Oliver for a speedy 25 was compensated by Luke Haughton (43) and Seth McDowell (42) adding 56 and victory by six wickets secured by Fraser Sheat (30no) and Tom Massey (42no) seeing them home with 6.2 overs in hand.

East Molesey v Guildford

East Molesey kept their cool in the heat to stay on Reigate’s tail, winning by seven runs and pushing Guildford further into trouble at the other end of the table.

A fourth wicket stand worth 96 between Jono Merlo and Jason Soames had given the visitors genuine hope of a first victory since the end of June, needing 79 for victory off the final 12.2 overs.

But Moles succeeded in starving the visitors of boundaries, Merlo attemping a reverse-sweep to off-spinner Jamie Southgate (46) and being adjudged LBW for 52. Soames – missing in recent weeks through a side strain – kept going until he was caught on the boundary for 74 off Pakistani all-rounder Hussain Tallat, whose 3-37 was a vital contribution in his final match before returning home.

Sam Burge’s typically enterprising 70 from 57 balls had given the hosts a flying start, putting on 103 with opening partner Marcus Campopiano (34), while Tallat (34) and Southgate (44) made contributions with the bat as well, despite a slide from 184-3 to 241 all out.

Guildford, led by Merlo for the first time after Olly Birts stepped down in midweek, could take heart from their fightback in the field to produce their best performance for some time, Birts’s 4-48 suggesting his freedom from the burden of leadership suited him.

But they remain 19 points away from safety, the next three matches being against the sides directly above them – Esher (sixth), Sunbury (seventh) and Sutton (eighth) before finishing at Wimbledon.

East Molesey, despite injuries and absences, remain heavily involved in the title fight and will aim to take advantage of Weybridge’s woes on Saturday.

Weybridge v Wimbledon

Frustrated by draws for the previous two weeks, Wimbledon took it out on the bottom-most Weybridge, pushing them closer to the drop.

Two wins in three weeks had fuelled hopes of a miracle escape and reducing the visitors to 15-2 was the ideal start. But Tim Lloyd’s commanding 154, featuring 15 fours and two sixes, dominated the match, batting into the final over having enjoyed a 96-run alliance with Billy Sewell (47) for the fifth wicket.

That ensured Wimbledon reached 296-6, the change of format saving them from another decision about whether to declare or not.

They weren’t held up by Weybridge’s batting for long, dismissing them for 119 in the 37 th over. Nathan Tilley’s 36 formed the greatest resistance, Kit Winder claiming 4-21 from 10.

Wimbledon remain third, 19 points off the pace and knowing this weekend’s clash with Reigate probably holds the key to their ambitions of a second title in three years. Weybridge are 57 points from safety, with 80 still available, so know there is almost no margin left for error.

Esher v Banstead

Patrick Rowe’s 114no ensured Banstead hunted down a target of 290, pushing them into the top half of the table.

The 23-year-old Australian, who spent most of last winter playing in Zimbabwe, supervised a chase which was completed by four wickets with one ball to spare.

Esher’s 289-9 had been led off by an opening stand of 101 between Northants all-rounder Justin Broad (54) and Sheridon Gumbs (70), Nicholas Smit making 44 but the hosts faltering against spinners Paul Byrne (3-42) and Arsalan Abbas (4-65).

Ayush Patel (66) and Arjun Gill (36) laid a foundation worth 82 in the reply but it needed Rowe – who hit 13 fours and two sixes – to take charge. He was aided by 28 from Gareth Macaskill (28) but Rowe prevented Esher fighting back.

The hosts took six points from the match but are only 32 points ahead of ninth-placed Guildford, who they visit on Saturday, Banstead 10 points and one place better off.

Sunbury v Ashtead

Ashtead’s third win in a row – propelling them into fourth – came despite Amar Virdi cracking 77 for Sunbury.

The Surrey off-spinner smashed 77 to rescue his side from 87-7, putting on 110 for the eighth wicket with wicketkeeper Conor Fulton (39), enabling the hosts to finally reach 201-9. Seamers Simon Keene (5-48) and Jake Martin (3-40) did much of the damage.

Daniel Geddes – younger brother of Surrey’s Ben – made 75 before he was stumped off Virdi (3-27) to start a mini-collapse of three wickets for five runs. Aaron Rose’s 21no proved decisive, though, ensuring the visitors won by three wickets with two overs to spare in a late summer revival which has surely ended any concerns about relegation.

Champions Sunbury, though, remain in danger, only 22 points and two places from the drop zone.

Best of the rest

Spencer got their noses just ahead in the battle for the Division One title, beating morning leaders Dulwich by two wickets for a lead of three points.

That was despite the hosts making 286 all out – built around James Schofield (59) and Apoorv Wankhede (82) – Ruairdh Barker claiming 4-58 with three wickets each for Freddie Horler and Max Hunt.

Hugo Darby’s aggressive 129 from 97 balls, which featured 13 fours and five sixes, was responsible for leading Spencer’s chase but it became a scramble near the end, Abid Jafri (29no) and skipper Gus Grant (13no) adding the final 26 to win by two wickets in the final over as Grant found the boundary.

Cranleigh kept alive their chances of an immediate return to the Premier, recovering from 133-8 to 259 thanks to a remarkable innings by South African Test bat Clyde Fortuin, earning victory over Walton by 176 runs. His 181 was punctuated by 15 fours and 11 sixes, Mark Bainbridge (3-28) and Matt Nichols (2-20) avoiding the carnage elsewhere. Walton then crumbled to 83 all out, slipping into the drop zone.

A four-wicket success for Malden Wanderers resuscitated their chances and may have terminated Normandy’s.

Ed Young’s unbeaten 61 ensured Valley End moved in the opposite direction and condemned Old Wimbledonians to the drop in a campaign where they have propped up the table for much of the time.

Skipper Ewan Parker’s 55no had extended OWs to 224 all out in the final over, Josh Dodd’s 62 speeding the hosts towards their target before former Gloucestershire all-rounder Young finished the job in the 43 rd over, by a margin of six wickets.

Sunday extra

Victory by 12 runs over Camberley has earned Banstead a place in the Conference Cup final.

Their opponents in the final remain unknown.

Patrick Rowe’s 50no continued a prolific weekend, leading the way alongside Ben Butterfield (48) and Arsalan Abbas (39no) to 215-7 from 45 overs, Dan Walker claiming 3-35.

Riding high at the top of Division Two, Camberley began their reply with Aiden Bariol (54) and Will Hale (27) putting on 75, Keddy Lesporis following that up with 56. But they slumped from 97-1 to 127-7 against Byrne (5-22), Walker (27) and James Harvey (17no) unable to pull round the situation as they were bowled out for 203.

An unfortunate incident at East Molesey meant the other semi-final, against Hornchurch, had to be postponed. The sprinkler system was inadvertently left on following Saturday’s match against Guildford, flooding the square on Sunday morning with Moles offering fervent apologies and the competition organisers left to make a decision on how to proceed.

There will be many players who took the field on Saturday who owed Brian Ruby’s coaching thanks for their advancement. His main club involvements were at Guildford – bringing through the likes of the Bicknell brothers and Ashley Giles – and Weybridge but his wider role in Surrey youth cricket saw many thousands of youngsters gain knowledge about the game. Ruby, who died last week aged 88, relished a battle on the field – and a few off it, if he felt that was required – so a sunny August day at the business end of the season was the perfect stage for those who benefited from his work to make it count.

The 9 best moments from Olivia Rodrigo’s first Forum show

Olivia Rodrigo performs Tuesday night at the Kia Forum in Inglewood.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

“Hometown show, baby — it’s very, very special.”

That was Olivia Rodrigo onstage at Inglewood’s Kia Forum on Tuesday night, not long into the first of six L.A.-area gigs that will wrap the U.S. leg of her world tour behind last year’s chart-topping “ Guts ” album.

Because the tour launched in February — and given all the action in pop music this summer from the likes of Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX — it’s been easy to forget that Rodrigo’s been out there doing her thing this whole time. (“We spent 2½ months in Europe,” she pointed out Tuesday. “We got to drink wine in France and eat pasta in Italy.”)

Chappell Roan performs at Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco, Calif., on Sun., Aug. 11, 2024.

Chappell Roan can’t be stopped

Four months after Chappell Roan’s viral performance at April’s Coachella festival, Chappellmania reached San Francisco’s Outside Lands on Sunday.

Aug. 13, 2024

But for the very vocal capacity crowd at the Forum, where the 21-year-old Temecula native said she grew up going to concerts, that just created an opportunity to welcome her back.

“L.A., you guys are gonna make me blush up here,” she said.

Here are nine highlights from the concert:

1. Opening her first arena production with one of her best singles — as Rodrigo’s been doing on this tour with the slyly funny “Bad Idea Right?” — would be an impressive flex even without the blistering nü-metal breakdown she threw into the song Tuesday. But that was just the start of a bold introductory stretch in which the singer dispensed with two of her three No. 1 hits — “Vampire” and “ Drivers License ” — within the show’s first 20 minutes.

2. Among the celebrities in attendance Tuesday were Tobey Maguire, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Adam Sandler, the last of whom whipped out his phone during “Good 4 U” to shoot a video of his daughters and their friends singing along with Rodrigo. (That + Sandler’s basketball shorts = big dad energy.) Also in the house: Universal Music Group boss Lucian Grainge .

Tuesday's show at the Forum was the first of six for Rodrigo in the L.A. area.

3. Although it’s still got plenty of recovering-theater-kid ballads, “Guts” leans into vintage pop-punk and alternative rock more than Rodrigo’s 2021 debut, “ Sour ,” did. Here she played the album’s most ’90s-coded cuts back to back, jamming “Pretty Isn’t Pretty” into “Love Is Embarrassing” as though we’d suddenly been dropped into a gig by Lush.

4. Rodrigo descended into the crowd for “Jealousy, Jealousy,” shaking hands and posing for selfies with fans in the front row, including one woman who rather familiarly placed her hand on the singer’s waist — only to have it quickly (if gently) removed by a security guard. The lady’s chagrined reaction, as caught by a cameraman and transmitted to the giant screen at the rear of the stage, was like a little one-act play about access to stardom in pop’s parasocial age.

A photo illustration including, from left, Olivia Rodrigo, Bruno Mars and Peso Pluma. Multiple images of the Intuit Dome are featured.

L.A. is packed with live music arenas. How will Inglewood’s new Intuit Dome stand out?

Steve Ballmer’s $2-billion project is intended to be more than just a home for the Clippers. It also aims to be a slam dunk venue for music fans.

Aug. 8, 2024

5. One song Rodrigo’s added to her set since the tour launched is “So American,” a zippy neo-new wave number from the deluxe edition of “Guts” that she set up at the Forum with a bit about how good it felt to return from Europe and “have a f—ing In-N-Out burger” on the way home from LAX. Patriotism!

6. What with all the headbanging, Tuesday’s gig didn’t always showcase Rodrigo’s singing, which at its best puts her among the most dramatic and exacting vocalists of her generation. Then again, “The Grudge” — a slowly building piano ballad that may or may not be about her fraught relationship with Taylor Swift — was powerful enough to remind you of that all on its own.

Olivia Rodrigo performs.

7. “One of my secret talents — perhaps maybe my foremost talent — is I am a wizard at the art of Instagram DM,” Rodrigo said while sitting cross-legged on the stage next to her guitarist. She added that she’s met many of the people she’s dated that way — “some of them a little questionable, so maybe that’s not a good example” — as well as her best friend and her trusted producer, Dan Nigro, whom she said DM’d her after she posted a clip of her song “Happier.”

8. The simple message emblazoned on the white tank top Rodrigo changed into for the show’s encore: “VOTE.”

9. Rodrigo brought Roan (with whom she shares a collaborator in Nigro) on the road as an opening act at the beginning of this tour, arguably sparking the flame that’s since developed into full-blown Chappellmania . For these L.A. gigs, she has the Breeders, the great veteran alt-rock band whose 1993 classic “Last Splash” can still startle you with its off-kilter intensity. (Last year, Rodrigo described the album’s unlikely MTV hit, “Cannonball,” as “one of those songs where I look at my life as before I heard it and after I heard it.”) Led by twin sisters Kim and Kelley Deal, the Breeders roared through their set on Tuesday at a thundering volume — loud enough, possibly, to be heard with appreciation by the many Gen X parents waiting outside the Forum for their kids.

Kia Oval Ground Tours The Kia Oval

EXPLORE OUR WORLD-FAMOUS VENUE ON ONE OF OUR VARIOUS KIA OVAL GROUND TOURS!

Since 1845 Surrey County Cricket Club has been based at The Oval, an iconic location for its history and unique gasholders that have overlooked the ground since 1847.

The Oval was the first ground to host Test cricket in England and is known as the birthplace of the Ashes, when WG Grace and England famously lost to Australia in 1882, which led to the Obituary of English cricket in the Sporting Times. The Oval also hosted the first ever International football match in England between England and Scotland in 1870, later hosting the first ever FA Cup final and the first rugby union fixture in England, again between England and Scotland.

The ground is well served by public transport and on-site coach parking is available. Follow in the footsteps of sporting legends and take a tour of this fascinating and historic venue.
