This page contains information specifically pertaining to the fourth season of Star Trek: Lower Decks . The season premiered as a Paramount+ exclusive in all territories where that streaming service was available. Prime Video had, by this time, had its rights as exclusive overseas streamer revoked and did not stream the season at all (see below ).

Background information [ ].

  • On 18 January 2022 , the fourth season was announced.
  • On 22 July 2022 , at San Diego Comic Con's Star Trek panel, Paramount+ announced that the fourth season would premiere with two episodes on Thursday, September 7.
  • Continuing a trend that was carried over from the previous season , the official season four poster art was a take on one of the official ones for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home .
  • In February 2023, it was announced that Prime Video was to lose its exclusive Lower Decks streaming rights outside the Americas and that the show would thereafter become internationally available on Paramount+ only as an exclusive. [1] Prime Video scheduled the series to leave the service in countries such as Germany in the month before the debut of season 4. [2] The fourth season of Lower Decks was therefore not added to Prime Video's catalog, although the first three seasons had yet to be removed at that point in time. A start was made however, when the third season became by January 2024 no longer available for streaming either in multiple foreign markets of the service.
  • With the removal of Lower Decks and Picard from Canadian CraveTV on 1 August 2023 , that streaming service was left without Star Trek entirely. [3] [4]
  • The season is available to watch on Paramount+ where available and on the closely affiliated SkyShowtime streaming service elsewhere.
  • On 24 August 2023 , it was announced that four episodes of the season would be played in theaters in Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, St. Louis, Washington DC, Vancouver, Calgary, and London, England. [5]

The 2024 inaugural Gold Collision Award was a tied win Lower Decks had to share with the Netflix Captain Fall animated series. [6] [7]

'Star Trek: Lower Decks' drops a wild new Season 4 trailer and official poster (video)

Galactic peace is shaken on Paramount+'s animated sci-fi series restarting its warp engines on Sept. 7

Lower Decks! Lower Decks!

Riding high on its portal-hopping crossover experiment with " Star Trek: Strange New Worlds " last month titled " Those Old Scientists ," where we saw voice actors Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome in the live-action roles of Boimler and Mariner, "Star Trek: Lower Decks" is poised to warp into its fourth season beginning on Sept. 7, 2023 with a double episode debut exclusively on Paramount+.

"Lower Decks" follows the zany misadventures of the U.S.S. Cerritos and its junior crew members as they traverse the Milky Way in the 24th century. It first hit the streaming universe in 2020 from creator Mike McMahan as a comedic component of executive producer Alex Kurtzman's expanded " Star Trek " programming for the Paramount+ platform, and its popularity has grown exponentially since then.

a crew of people scream inside of a shuttle craft in space surrounded by explosions

Here's the official Season 4 synopsis:

"Created by Emmy Award winner Mike McMahan ('Rick and Morty,' 'Solar Opposites'), in Season 4 of 'Star Trek: Lower Decks,' an unknown force is destroying starships and threatening galactic peace. Luckily, the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos isn't important enough for stuff like that! Instead, Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford and Provisional Ensign T'Lyn are keeping up with their Starfleet duties, avoiding malevolent computers and getting stuck in a couple caves – all while encountering new and classic aliens along the way."

"Lower Decks'" U.S.S. Cerritos support staff includes Ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), Ensign Tendi (Noël Wells), and Ensign Rutherford (Eugene Corder). Rounding out the cast is the bridge crew that's comprised of Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis), Commander Jack Ransom (Jerry O’Connell), Lieutenant Shaxs (Fred Tatasciore), and Doctor T’Ana (Gillian Vigman).

Animated by the talented folks at Titmouse, "Star Trek: Lower Decks" Season 4 is produced by CBS' Eye Animation Productions, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment. Secret Hideout's Alex Kurtzman, Roddenberry Entertainment's Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth, and Katie Krentz (219 Productions) act as executive producers in collaboration with showrunner Mike McMahan.

'Star Trek: Lower Decks' Drew Inspiration From Kenneth Branagh For This Mysterious Planet

'Grey's Anatomy' Season 21 Just Got a Surprising Update

Get ready for the day in gotham city with new guardian work jacket, here's when 'bosch: legacy' will return to freevee [exclusive], the big picture.

  • Star Trek: Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan found inspiration for the planet Orion in Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing .
  • McMahan aimed to depict a less sexualized version of the Orion race, moving away from Star Trek: Enterprise 's portrayal of them as a matriarchy controlled by pheromones.
  • Tendi's backstory in Lower Decks reveals her transition from her family's tradition of piracy to joining Starfleet.

Star Trek: Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan took inspiration from an unlikely source to create the planet Orion; Kenneth Branagh 's 1993 adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing . He outlines the process behind creating a new planet in a new interview. In a new interview with TrekCore.com , McMahan talks about the process behind depicting the Orion homeworld; although they were one of the first alien races to appear on Star Trek: The Original Series , their planet had never been seen until now. He didn't have much to work with, as the species had only appeared intermittently across the franchise before Lower Decks introduced enthusiastic Orion ensign D'Vana Tendi ( Noël Wells ). Says McMahan, "We needed to figure out how a visit to Orion would tell us about Tendi. My wife’s favorite movie is Kenneth Branagh’s Much Ado About Nothing , so we made Tendi’s family house that castle from Florence, and built things out from there."

McMahan also wanted to get away from earlier series Star Trek: Enterprise 's over-sexualized depiction of the race as a matriarchy that keeps its males in line with pheromones; "I tried to honor the stuff we had seen before about powerful women, but make it less of a sexual thing." Tendi has had quite a spotlight this season, as it has also explored her complicated relationship with crewmate Sam Rutherford, as discussed in McMahan's interview with Collider's Samantha Coley .

Who Are The Orions?

First introduced in the unaired 1966 Star Trek pilot , the Orions were depicted as nubile, green-skinned seductresses. They later made more substantial appearances in Star Trek: The Animated Series , which revealed the Orions were infamous across the galaxy as space pirates. The Orion Syndicate criminal organization came up frequently in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , but no Orions ever appeared on-screen. The prequel series Enterprise featured the Orions in live-action for the first time in over thirty years and introduced the concept of the planet's so-called "slave girls" actually controlling the male members of the species with their pheromones. Lower Decks has slowly teased out Tendi's backstory over its four seasons; although her upbeat, cheery attitude initially seems at odds with her species' reputation, the series eventually reveals that she's left her family tradition of piracy behind to join Starfleet.

Star Trek: Lower Decks ' fourth season is currently airing on Paramount Plus. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates, and watch the Season 4 trailer for Lower Decks below.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5 Story, Cast, Release Date, Updates

Quick links, star trek: lower decks season 5 trailer premiered at san diego comic-con, star trek: lower decks season 5 is confirmed as the final season, star trek: lower decks season 5 premieres october 24 on paramount+, everyone is back for star trek: lower decks season 5, what could star trek: lower decks season 5 be about, could star trek: lower decks continue beyond paramount plus, star trek: lower decks season 5 updates.

Star Trek: Lower Decks will return for season 5, with San Diego Comic-Con's trailer teasing what to expect from the animated comedy's final season . Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4's finale, "Old Friends, New Planets" ended on a cliffhanger, as Lieutenant D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) sacrificed her Starfleet career so that the USS Cerritos' crew could rescue Lt. Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome.) While Lt. Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) was sad about Tendi's departure, the rest of the Lower Deckers were confident that the lovable Orion will return to Starfleet in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5.

The ending of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 resolved why Lieutenant Beckett Mariner is so intent on remaining a Lower Decker : the tragic death of her idol and friend from Starfleet Academy, Ensign Sito Jaxa (Shannon Fill) from Star Trek: The Next Generation , instilled a desire within Mariner to avoid a rank that could mean sending another Starfleet Officer to their death. The USS Cerritos crew worked together to save Mariner from disgraced ex-Starfleet Academy Cadet Nicholas Locarno (Robert Duncan McNeill), and Beckett remains a Starfleet true believer. But what happens next in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5?

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Ending Explained (In Detail)

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 had an explosive finale pitting Lt. Mariner against her former Starfleet Academy classmate Nicholas Locarno.

Lower Decks teases "one last everything"

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5's trailer is a loving parody of the trailer for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , the final film starring William Shatner's Captain James T. Kirk and the crew o f Star Trek: The Original Series. Promising "one last adventure" and "one last everything," Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 hints at an alternate timeline USS Cerritos led by Captain Becky Freeman, plenty of Orion action with D'Vana Tendi, and even a nod to Star Trek: Enterprise 's infamous decontamination chamber. Klingons are also back, with Ma'ah (Jon Curry) apparently getting a new female Klingon love interest (voiced by Star Trek: Discovery' s Mary Chieffo) .

Lower Decks season 5 is in production now

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 was confirmed as the final season by Paramount+. In April, Paramount+ announced the end of Star Trek: Lower Decks along with the simultaneous renewal of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for season 4. Lower Decks ' showrunner Mike McMahan expressed his fears in 2023 that Star Trek 's first animated comedy could be coming to an end, although he still has years of stories he could do about the crew of the USS Cerritos. With the announcement, McMahan and Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman issued a statement on social media about Lower Decks ending, and they thanked the fans:

Jack Quaid, who plays Lt. Brad Boimler, posted his own thanks to Star Trek: Lower Decks on Instagram, as did Noel Wells, who plays Lt. D'Vana Tendi . Check out Quaid's post below:

Something Star Trek: Lower Decks Creator Said Gives Me Hope Season 5 Isnt The End

Star Trek: Lower Decks is gearing up for its final season on Paramount+, but is it over? Mike McMahan's words give me hope there can still be more.

Lower Decks season 5 will run into December

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 will premiere on October 24 on Paramount+. As an animated series, Lower Decks ' scripting and production weren't affected by 2023's dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and the show's actors like Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid completed their voice-over work after the strikes were resolved. The actors finished their ADR and additional dialogue, and Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 is on track to be Paramount+'s featured Star Trek event in the fall.

Tawny Newsome is remaining in Star Trek as one of the writers of the next Star Trek series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and Tawny is developing Star Trek's first live-action comedy with Justin Simien.

Lower Decks' cast got bigger in season 4

Star Trek: Lower Decks ' entire cast will be back for season 5 . Although D'Vana Tendi left the USS Cerritos to rejoin Star Trek 's Orions , the other Lower Deckers seem confident that she'll find a way back to Starfleet. Star Trek: Lower Decks ' new addition, Lieutenant T'Lyn (Gabrielle Ruiz), fit like a glove with the Lower Deckers and will remain aboard the USS Cerritos in Lower Decks season 5.

After reconciling her issues with promotion, Lt. Mariner is back aboard the Cerritos, where she aims to be less self-destructive in Lower Decks season 5. Star Trek 's Mark Twain-ing odd couple, Bradward Boimler and Sam Rutherford will also return alongside the rest of the Lower Decks supporting cast.

Mike McMahan has dropped Lower Decks season 5 hints

A return to Orion to continue Tendi's story is a definite in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 , and there's some "love" for Scott Bakula's Star Trek: Enterprise as well. After his brief stint as acting Captain, Boimler will likely be pursuing a career in command. However, his transporter clone William Boimler is still out there somewhere, potentially becoming Lower Decks season 5's big bad. Mike McMahan has also teased a wedding and a trip to a planet he has always wanted the Cerritos to visit. Meanwhile, the reformed hologram Goodgey (Jack McBrayer) could provide some interesting new storylines for Rutherford and the crew of the USS Cerritos in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5.

Fan support got Star Trek: Prodigy to Netflix

MIke McMahan has been carefully using the verbiage that Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 is the "final season on Paramount+," and this implies that Star Trek 's first animated comedy could continue on a different streaming service . Star Trek: Prodigy fans rallied to bring that series to Netflix. At San Diego Comic-Con, Alex Kurtzman urged fans to apply the same creativity and fervor to boost Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5's numbers, which would make it more attractive to shop to other streamers. Whether Star Trek: Lower Decks could be revamped into a different format is another question, but the voyages of the USS Cerritos ending on Paramount+ may ultimately mark a new beginning.

Whether Star Trek: Lower Decks could be revamped into a different format is another question, but the voyages of the USS Cerritos ending on Paramount+ may ultimately mark a new beginning.

TREKCORE: After so many years and going from live-action to voice acting for animation, what was it like trying to find Janeway’s voice again?

KATE MULGREW: Yeah, I was a little bit on the back foot when the offer came or the conversation opened. Alex Kurtzman called me and said, “What do you think about this?” And I said, “Let me think. Let me think,” because I was holding to myself, very close, my Janeway, right. My Voyager Janeway of seven years. And what that cost me, what that meant to me, how that deepened me and what I learned from that. And it was singular and very, very important to Kate Mulgrew.

So I said, “Alex, would you give me a few days to think about this?” And I went to my pals who I really respect. The Bob Picardos of the world and the John de Lancies of the world, and they said, “You’re out of your mind if you don’t do it. This is the audience that needs you more than anybody. Bring it to the children, and then you will have gone full circle. Nothing could be better or more gratifying.” And, in fact, that is exactly what’s happened.

TREKCORE: Right! On Voyager , you inspired a whole generation of young women in particular, including myself. I’m an engineer now.

MULGREW: Are you? Oh, great! You know, whenever B’Elanna Torres invited me into engineering because of some incident, I always found that particularly thrilling because that’s where the real science was brought into the conversation. I love it.

TREKCORE: Janeway and B’Elanna putting their scientific minds together was always a highlight.

MULGREW: It was great fun. Well, Janeway was a scientist. Yes, she loved all that.

TREKCORE: And now a whole new generation of young women and young people in general, get to benefit from having you as an example again. How does that feel? What advice do you have for the next generation of young people that see Admiral Janeway now on Prodigy ?

MULGREW: Well, I think I’m talking about a very young audience. My advice is only come along and use your wonderful sense of adventure, imagination, and acceptance that adults sometimes calcify — you know, as we grow older, we become a little more rigid. The ego is unforgiving, but the five-year-old has not yet developed that hubris. The five-year-old looks at it and says, “Oh, I could do that. I wanna do that. I wanna be like that.” That’s a good lesson. That’s what I want this adventure to be all about.

And as far as I’m concerned, two seasons is not enough. It’s just the beginning of this adventure. So we have to go on, we have to get this thing optioned for a third season and a fourth and a fifth and on and on, because I think it’s gonna be a trip they will never forget.

TREKCORE: I agree. And my kids said the same thing at the very end of the season. They’re like, “They set it up perfectly. They have to make more now!”

MULGREW: Yes, they do. They do. They do.

TREKCORE: My kids and I love Prodigy . We watched it all together.

MULGREW: How great. And do they ask you questions, or do they seem to understand?

TREKCORE: They had no problem understanding it!

MULGREW: Which is my thing about kids. Smart-smart. They just get it. You know, they don’t put the obfuscations in front of themselves. They don’t confuse it. They’re just wide open to it. A five-year-old can grasp the concept of time travel better than any 50-year-old physicist can. It’s amazing.

TREKCORE: And it sparked conversation, too.

MULGREW: And it also lifts them up. Don’t you think?

TREKCORE: It does. It also sparks their minds.

MULGREW: And their imaginations. Right. How much of this is possible? Well, we’re finding out, aren’t we? It’s infinitely possible.

TREKCORE: I think you mentioned, too, that your grandchildren watch Prodigy ?

MULGREW: I have not yet met my grandson! When I finish this interview with you, I’m gonna get in the car and go up there, and I’m gonna take Jack Bear into my arms and I’m gonna take Miro into the other arm. She’s three. And we’ll turn on Prodigy . Yeah. I’m pretty lucky.

TREKCORE: Congratulations. That’s so exciting!

MULGREW: Thank you very, very much. Yeah, life is good.

TREKCORE: Life is good! What messages do you want your grandchildren to take from Prodigy , once they’re old enough to dig in?

MULGREW: You know, I think, of course, it depends on the way the kid is being brought up, but I trust my son and my daughter-in-law. They’re very good parents. But I encourage the dignity of the imagination. Always listen to the child’s imagination. And that will take them, I think, only to a hopeful place and a place of love and warmth and friendship and camaraderie. The truly valuable things. So I think that’s what I’m longing for regarding Prodigy .

TREKCORE: That’s great parenting advice, too! That’s how we create the next generation of explorers.

MULGREW: Right. And I’m encouraging every parent to put their children in little chairs in front of the TV and turn it on!

TREKCORE: A little screen time never hurt anyone.

MULGREW: It’s okay. Janeway says it’s okay. It’s okay. (Laughs)

TREKCORE: What do you think motivates Janeway at this stage of her life? What do you think’s changed since the last time you played her?

MULGREW: Well, of course, life teaches us many things. Sacrifice is one of them, but I think what Janeway knows, which maybe is unusual or specific to her character, is sacrifice leads you to love. Sacrifice teaches you to love. And just underneath that ideology in Janeway, or recognition in Janeway, is her ardent love of space and science. Her curiosity has done nothing but grow and expand in her life.

So now she’s at an age where… let the devil take the hindmost. I wanna see it all. I wanna touch it all. I wanna go where I’ve not gone before. So as long as that is still there, I think anything can happen, and it will, on Prodigy.

TREKCORE: I did ask my kids if they had any questions for their Admiral. Now, they had taken exception to the character of Admiral Jellico. The first time we saw him in Prodigy , my youngest said, “Who is this guy who thinks he can tell Admiral Janeway what to do?!” So their question is, why isn’t Admiral Janeway in charge of everything? Shouldn’t she be in charge of everything, because she’s so awesome?

MULGREW: Well, she is. She is essentially, but tell them, there’s no story if there’s no conflict. Tell them that there has to be the darkness meeting the light. And that Janeway will persevere. Everything is a dance in Star Trek in space, do you know? So let’s just see what develops here.

TREKCORE: Yes, and her decision to come back from her early retirement because they need her, right?

MULGREW: Well, she was doing nothing. She was languishing. You know, she was sitting in her garden thinking, “What am I gonna do?” No, this is wonderful. This is what she’s built for, made for, and I want to infuse it with that. I wanna imbue it with that sense of adventure, excitement, intrigue, courage. This, I think, will teach children that kind of wonderful courage. Physical, mental, moral courage. Those are the protocols that I think I’d like to teach them more than anything else.

TREKCORE: You’ve made some really interesting choices this time around with Admiral Janeway. You could see how she’s changed and grown as a character. And I love some of your deliveries. I was wondering if you had a favorite line or scene from Prodigy , from getting to be Janeway again?

MULGREW: Do I have a favorite? Do you know I can’t think of a favorite because it’s so many of them. Well, in every episode they have me saying something that just resonates, and that I find profoundly moving, so to pick one, no, but probably something that’s funny.

TREKCORE: One of my favorites is when Admiral Jellico gave you the order to close the wormhole and Janeway knew that this was her last shot at finding Chakotay. And, you know, we’ve heard Janeway say “Fire” many, many times and you do it always with authority, very succinctly, but in this instance, you let your voice quiver a little bit, you know? Like to meet the gravity of knowing that this was your shot at finding Chakotay, and it just disappeared.

MULGREW: It’s intensely important. And then when they’re finally reunited. I mean, it’s a killer. It’s great.

TREKCORE: Janeway and Chakotay’s relationship… I think it was pretty obvious in both Voyager and Prodigy how Chakotay feels about Kathryn. There’s less there about how Janeway feels in return.

MULGREW: Well, I think you get an intimation in Prodigy in how Janeway feels. She feels very, very deeply. This man is so important to her. I mean, think of the history. Think of what they’ve been through together. He was a Maquis. He was my enemy.

We’ve transcended every possible conflict and obfuscation that they could’ve come up with. This is a deeply significant and, I think, transformative relationship. In a way, she doesn’t want to live without him, and he doesn’t want to live without her.

And there you have it.
