Additional Features
- Siri adds Announce Notifications on AirPods and the ability for users to share what’s on their screen just by asking. Siri can now be enabled in third-party HomeKit accessories, so HomePod and HomePod mini users can easily and securely ask Siri to send a message, set a reminder, or broadcast an Intercom message to the family from more devices in the home. 7
- iCloud+ combines everything users love about iCloud with new premium features, including Hide My Email, expanded HomeKit Secure Video support, and an innovative new internet privacy service, iCloud Private Relay. 8 Current iCloud storage subscribers will be upgraded to iCloud+ automatically at no additional cost. All iCloud+ plans can be shared with people in the same Family Sharing group, so everyone can enjoy the new features, storage, and elevated experience that comes with the service.
- The Health app gets a new sharing tab that lets users share their health data with family, caregivers, or a care team, trends give users a way to focus attention on meaningful changes in personal health metrics, and Walking Steadiness is a new metric that empowers people to proactively manage their fall risk. Users also have the ability to store verifiable COVID-19 vaccination or test result records directly in the Health app, so they can easily access them at any time.
- Translate adds a new Auto Translate feature that automatically detects when a user begins speaking and translates speech without tapping the microphone button, allowing for conversation across languages to flow more naturally. Systemwide translation makes it possible to translate text anywhere on iPhone by selecting it and tapping Translate.
- New iPhone setup makes it more seamless than ever to get started with iPhone. Existing iPhone users can temporarily back up data to iCloud — even without a subscription — to easily transfer their data to a new iPhone. 9 For those moving to iPhone for the first time, an improved Move to iOS experience easily transfers photo albums, files, folders, and Accessibility settings, so iPhone feels personal right from the start.
- Accessibility features include the ability to explore people, objects, text, and tables within images in more detail with VoiceOver, and new background sounds play continuously in the background to mask unwanted environmental or external noise. Sound actions customize Switch Control to work with mouth sounds, and users can customize display and text size settings on an app-by-app basis. Apple is also bringing support for recognizing imported audiograms — charts that show the results of a hearing test — to Headphone Accommodations.

iOS 15 introduces new ways to stay connected, powerful updates that help users focus and explore, and intelligent features to get more done with iPhone. FaceTime updates provide more natural video calls, Focus helps users reduce distraction, new features like Live Text use on-device intelligence to surface useful information, upgrades to Maps provide brand new ways to navigate the world, and much more. iOS 15 is available today as a free software update.
FaceTime is more essential than ever, giving users a way to easily connect with the people who matter most. Powerful updates to FaceTime audio and video features make calls feel more natural and lifelike. With spatial audio, voices in a Group FaceTime call sound like they’re coming from the direction in which the person is positioned on the screen. 1 Voice Isolation, a new microphone mode, uses machine learning to eliminate background noise and prioritize the user’s voice, while Wide Spectrum allows for every bit of background sound to come through. Inspired by the stunning portrait photos taken on iPhone, Portrait mode in FaceTime blurs a user’s background and puts them at the focus. 2 Voice Isolation, Wide Spectrum, and Portrait mode can also be used with third-party apps, such as Webex, Zoom, and WhatsApp. Group FaceTime gives the option to display participants in same-size tiles in a new grid view.
FaceTime calls now extend beyond Apple devices, so people using an Android or Windows device can join from their web browser. FaceTime calls on the web remain end-to-end encrypted so privacy is not compromised. To initiate the call, iPhone, iPad, and Mac users simply create a FaceTime link and share it through Messages, Calendar, Mail, or third-party apps, making it easier than ever to connect with friends and family.
Later this fall, SharePlay will deliver a new way for users to share experiences with friends and family while on a FaceTime call, such as listening to songs together, watching a TV show or movie, completing a workout together, or sharing their screen to view apps. SharePlay will work with apps like Apple Music, Apple TV+, and Apple Fitness+, as well as Disney+, ESPN+, HBO Max, Hulu, MasterClass, Paramount+, Pluto TV, SoundCloud, TikTok, Twitch, and many others. SharePlay can be accessed through iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and with shared playback controls, anyone in a SharePlay session can play, pause, or jump ahead. SharePlay even extends to Apple TV, so users can watch shows or movies on a big screen.
Shared with You is a new section that appears in Photos, Safari, Apple News, Music, Apple Podcasts, and the Apple TV app that displays the photos, articles, music, and other content shared by friends and family in Messages. Shared with You automatically displays shared photos in the Photos app, news stories in Apple News, and other relevant content in the corresponding app. The Shared with You section shows who sent the content, and makes it easy to view the associated message and restart the conversation.
In iOS 15, Memoji brings even more ways for users to express themselves with multicolored headwear, more glasses styles, and new accessibility options including cochlear implants, oxygen tubes, and a soft helmet. Memoji stickers can be customized with more than 40 outfit options and nine new sticker poses including a shaka, hand wave, and light bulb moment.
iOS 15 introduces Focus, a new way to help users reduce distraction by filtering notifications based on what a user wants to focus on in that moment. For example, the Work Focus can be set during work hours to only allow notifications from coworkers and apps that are used for work, the Personal Focus can be used when taking a break with friends and family, or the Fitness Focus can help a user stay in the zone while completing a workout. Users can create a custom Focus or select a provided Focus, which uses on-device intelligence to suggest which notifications from people and apps are allowed. To further extend the ability to focus, users can create dedicated Home Screen pages with relevant apps and widgets to match a specific Focus.
While using Focus, a status is automatically displayed to contacts in Messages and supported third-party communication apps like Slack, so they know not to interrupt. Users will even receive suggestions to turn on a Focus based on factors like time of day or location, and when Focus is set on one Apple device, it automatically applies to all of a user’s Apple devices.
Notifications have been redesigned, adding contact photos for people and larger icons for apps that make them even easier to identify. The notification summary is a collection of notifications delivered each day at scheduled times determined by the user. Using on-device intelligence, the summary is arranged by priority, with the most relevant notifications rising to the top based on how a user interacts with apps. Time-sensitive notifications, messages, and phone calls will be delivered immediately, so users won’t miss timely alerts, and it’s easy to temporarily mute any app or messaging thread for an hour or for the day.
Live Text makes text in photos interactive. Using on-device intelligence, Live Text recognizes text in photos across the entire system including the web, and allows users to take action, such as copy and paste, look up information, and translate. Users can even tap the image of a phone number to make a call, or the image of a web address to open a page in Safari. With the power of the Neural Engine, the Camera app can also quickly recognize and copy text in the moment, such as the Wi-Fi password displayed at a local coffee shop. With Visual Look Up, users can learn more about popular art, landmarks, and books, plants and flowers found in nature, and breeds of pets.
Spotlight is the universal way to start searches on iPhone and now it can be accessed directly from the Lock Screen, and includes the ability to search photos by location, people, scenes, or objects. Using Live Text, Spotlight can find text and handwriting in photos.
iOS 15 delivers the biggest update ever to Memories. With a fresh new look, interactive interface, and integration with Apple Music that uses on-device intelligence to suggest music tracks, new cinematic Memories makes it easier to relive favorite or forgotten moments.
Safari introduces a newly designed browsing experience that makes controls easier to reach. By default, the new tab bar is positioned at the bottom of the screen, so users can easily swipe between tabs with one hand. Tab Groups allow users to organize tabs and easily access them at any time across iPhone, iPad, or Mac, and a customizable start page and web extensions on iOS make Safari more powerful and personal than ever.
Maps in iOS 15 introduces a whole new way of looking at the world. A visually stunning map offers unprecedented levels of detail for neighborhoods, commercial districts, buildings, as well as custom-designed landmarks, and a new night-time mode with a moonlit glow. Navigation features a new three-dimensional driving view with road details that help users more easily identify turn lanes, medians, crosswalks, and sidewalks. The enhanced map is available in Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco, with more to come. A beautifully designed interactive globe provides rich detail for mountain ranges, deserts, rainforests, and bodies of water.
Transit riders can get one-tap access to all departures near them and pin their favorite lines. Maps automatically follows along with a selected transit route, notifying users when it’s nearly time to disembark, and riders can even keep track on Apple Watch. By simply holding up iPhone, users can receive detailed walking directions in augmented reality.
With iOS 15, users can access even more places with just a tap of their iPhone with new home, hotel, office, and car keys in Wallet. Digital car keys get even better with support for Ultra Wideband technology, so users can securely lock, unlock, and start their supported vehicle without removing their iPhone from a pocket or bag. 3 iPhone can also be used to unlock a user’s home, office, or even a hotel room — all through keys stored in Wallet. 4 Additionally, users will be able to add eligible state IDs and driver’s licenses to Wallet on iPhone as this option becomes available in their state in the future. 5
Weather includes an all-new design with full-screen maps, graphical displays of weather data, and dynamic layouts that change based on conditions. Beautifully animated backgrounds more accurately reflect sun position, clouds, and precipitation, and notifications indicate when rain or snow is about to start or stop.
Notes adds user-created tags that make it easy to quickly categorize notes and mentions that allow members of shared notes to notify one another of important updates. An all-new Activity view shows the recent history of a shared note, and Highlights reveals details on who made the changes. Quick Notes created on Mac and iPad can be viewed and edited in Notes.
New privacy features provide even more transparency and control over the data users provide to apps. Mail Privacy Protection prevents senders from learning whether an email has been opened, and hides IP addresses so senders can’t learn a user’s location or use it to build a profile on them. Siri’s protection of user privacy goes even further with on-device speech recognition as users’ audio requests are now processed entirely on device by default, enabling more personalization, offline requests, and faster performance. 6

Guide: How to use the new Safari in iOS 15
5th September, 2021 at 6:51 am by Ben W
- The iOS 15 update redesigns the Safari browser with new tab bar design and hidden features.
- There are ways to revert to the old design found in iOS 14 and older.
Apple has moved the address bar to the bottom of the display. Tapping it will open the Start page, with frequently visited sites and bookmarks. It also integrates the search results into the same page.
The relocated address bar is largely easier to use on larger devices, but can be moved back to the top. Apple provides the options in Settings > Safari to select the ‘Tab Bar’ design or ‘Single Tab’. You can also tap the ‘Aa’ icon on the address bar and select ‘Show Top Address Bar’.
Choosing the ‘Single Tab’ design will restore most of the functionality from the Safari UI in iOS 14. Similar to previous versions, the ‘Aa’ icon lets you change website settings and enable Reader View.
Pull To Refresh
To refresh a webpage in Safari in iOS 15, you can pull down from the top. This doesn’t replace the reload button, and you can still refresh using the icon in the address bar.
With the new design enabled, you can switch between tabs by swiping left or right in the address bar area. Swiping up and holding displays the list of tabs you have open.
This screen has been redesigned to show a greater number of tabs than before in a grid view. You can quickly close a tab or force touch on one to close every other tab.
Finally, Private Mode can be invoked by tapping the ‘X tabs’ link at the bottom, and selecting ‘Private’.
iOS 15 lets you save Safari tabs in Tab Groups, for easy access later on. For example, you could save multiple tabs in a group named ‘Work’ to ensure you don’t loose important webpages, while not having them open on your iPhone.
First, open up all the websites you want to add to a Tab Group. Tap the Tabs icon at the bottom left, then the ‘X tabs’ link. Select ‘New Tab Group from X tabs’, enter a name, then Save. You can then switch between these by tapping the group name at the bottom, selecting another group, or Start Page.
If you use Safari on multiple devices, such as an iPad, Mac, or another iPhone, Tab Groups will sync across those. You’ll need to be running iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey.
Redesigned Start Page
Last year, macOS Big Sur overhauled the Start Page in Safari, with customisable backgrounds and more control over what appears. iOS 15 brings the same capabilities.
On the Start Page, scroll down and tap ‘Edit’. Here, you can reduce the clutter on the page by tapping the toggles next to certain items. You can hide or show Favourites, Reading List, Frequently Visited, Siri Suggestions, iCloud Tabs, Privacy Report and Shared With You.
Apple also lets you apply a preset background image or add your own. To sync the Start Page preferences between devices, tap the toggle next to ‘Use Start Page on All Devices’.
iCloud Private Relay
iCloud Private Relay is built into iOS 15 and will encrypt traffic in Safari and other apps. It works by sending information to a server that will removed all personal data, like IP addresses. This data is then sent to another third-party server that will assign you a temporary IP address.
Private Relay can prevent anybody from snooping on your web activity and linking traffic to a user’s identity. The feature will launch with iOS 15 as a public beta amid reports of internet connection dropouts, and will likely be turned on by default in a future software update. You can check whether iCloud Private Relay is enabled by opening Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Private Relay (Beta).
Shared With You
This feature is system-wide in iOS 15 and works in iMessage, Safari, News, Apple Music, Podcasts, Apple TV and Photos. It works by displaying all links sent to you in iMessage in a Shared With You section on the Start Page in Safari. The feature will also support third party apps and ensures you can gather links sent by others so you don’t forget to open them. Tapping the sender’s name will launch iMessage where you can compose a response.
Other New Features
- Voice Search: carry out a search with your voice by tapping the small microphone icon in the address bar.
- Security improvements: Apple says Safari will now automatically upgrade sites to their HTTPS version if available.
- Website Tinting: Safari now blends the collapsed address bar with the colors of webpages, if they support it.
- Landscape UI: the UI that appears when using Safari in landscape has been redesigned to appear similar to that of Safari in iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey, with a compact tab bar design
That's everything new in Safari in iOS 15. This guide will be updated if further improvements are made to Safari. Apple is expected to launch iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey later this month.

Download iOS 15: What devices are eligible for the update?
If your current iPhone runs iOS 14, then it's supported by iOS 15. Older devices may see a strain on battery life once they upgrade to the new software if our iOS 15 beta testing experience is anything to go by. Nevertheless, here are all the devices that can run iOS 15.
- iPod touch (seventh generation)

- iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
- iPhone 8 and 8 Plus
- iPhone XS and XS Max

Note that iOS 15 is only compatible with iPhones. If you have an iPad on hand, you'll want our instructions on how to download iPadOS 15 .
Download iOS 15: Back up your phone first
Any time you install a major software update on your iPhone, you should first back up your device. iOS 15 is no exception. Having a backup on hand makes it easier to restore your iPhone should anything go wrong with the update.

We've got a complete guide on how to back up your iPhone , including instructions on backing up to iCloud as well as to your computer, whether it's running the latest version of macOS or not. (The guide also includes steps for Windows users on backing up their iPhone.)
Whenever I install an iOS beta or a full upgrade to a new version — say, migrating from iOS 14 to iOS 15 — I back up my iPhone to my computer so that it's readily at hand in case I have to roll things back. It helps to archive your backup as well.
In older versions of macOS — the ones that still have iTunes — you do this by going into iTunes, selecting Preferences, and clicking on the Device tab. Select the device backup you want and control-click — select Archive from the drop-down menu that appears. If you're on macOS Catalina or later, select your iPhone from Locations in the Finder sidebar; then create a backup, followed by a click of Manage Backups to Archive that backup.
How to download iOS 15
With a backup in place, you're ready to download iOS 15. It's a pretty simple process.
1. Go to the Settings app, and select General.
2. From General, tap Software Update. If the iOS 15 beta is ready, it will there waiting for you.
3. Tap Download and Install. You will have to input your PIN or passcode and accept Apple's terms of service.
Because updates like iOS 15 are fairly large, expect the download to take a bit of time. You'll also want to make sure that your iPhone is plugged in and charging if possible, so that your battery doesn't run down during the upgrade process.
4. When the phone is ready to install iOS 14 and restart, it'll notify you with an on-screen prompt. Accept that prompt , and your iPhone will shut down.
As the software installs, you'll see an Apple logo and a progress bar. Once everything's up to date, you'll be prompted to unlock your phone with your passcode and enjoy your new iOS 15-powered device.
Should you download iOS 15?
iOS 15 may be in a final form that Apple is confident enough to release to the general public, but that doesn't mean it's bug-free. Sometimes software comes out with bugs that escaped anyone's attention, and it takes at least on software update to get everything running smoothly.
We've been running iOS 15 on multiple phones since the beta program began in late June, and we've not experienced any show-stopping bugs. The most persistent problem has been apps crashing upon launch, forcing a restart; recent betas seem to have corrected that issue. That said, nothing precludes you from encountering a bug when you upgrade to iOS 15.
If you're feeling cautious, there's nothing wrong with waiting to upgrade to iOS 15, at least until other people give the software a try and pronounce it solid. Certainly, Apple wil likely come out with an update to the software shortly that will look to tackle lingering bugs, and after that, you may enjoy a smoother upgrade.

[FAQ] Safari in iOS 15: Top 15 Queries Answered
A detailed how-to guide for iphone users new to ios 15's safari..
In iOS 15 , Safari has undergone a radical change with a new design and a host of interesting features. The address bar now sits at the bottom of the screen to make one-handed usage easier. iPhone users can now customize the Start Page and use the new swipe gestures for seamless navigation. Safari in iOS 15 also introduces Voice search, Tab Groups to save your tabs, and Web extensions for the first time.
Apparently, the revamped design and UI notably change the way how you use Safari on iOS 15. That’s because the position of various options has changed, however, the functionality is still the same.
iOS 15’s Safari: Frequently Asked Questions
In this FAQ article, we answer all the basic queries that you might encounter while using updated Safari on iOS 15. And if you’re completely new to Safari then this guide would indeed help you. Let’s begin.
How to get back old safari in iOS 15 on iPhone
Are you disappointed with the new Safari and looking to get back to the older version of Safari from iOS 14? Well, that’s not possible. You simply cannot switch back to the old Safari unless you decide to downgrade from iOS 15 to iOS 14 .
How to move the address bar to the top in iOS 15’s Safari
Don’t like the tab bar at the bottom of the screen in Safari on iOS 15? Thankfully, there is an option to move the Safari address or URL bar back to the top.
To quickly switch between the bottom and top address bar in Safari,
- Open a website in Safari if you haven’t yet.
The address bar will now appear at the top in Safari. To move back to the bottom address bar, simply tap the aA icon again and select “Show Bottom Tab Bar”.
Alternate Way –
Go to Settings > Safari. Under the ‘Tabs’ section, select the “ Single Tab ” option.
How to find Bookmarks and History in Safari on iOS 15
Wondering where are your bookmarks and history stored in iOS 15’s Safari? Here’s how you can access bookmarks, history, and Reading List in the new Safari.
- Similarly, tap the “Reading List” and “History” tab to view their contents.
How to Open Recently Closed Tabs in Safari on iOS 15
Do you want to reopen the last closed tab in Safari? To do so,
- Tap the “Tab Overview” button on the bottom menu bar or swipe up on the tab bar.
- Once you see all your open tabs in a grid view, long-press the + button at the bottom left corner.
- Swipe up or down to navigate across the closed tabs and tap them to re-open.
How to close all open tabs in Safari at once
To close all tabs in Safari on iOS 15,
- Tap and hold the “Tab Switcher” button (two-square icon) in the menu bar at the bottom.
Alternative Way – Swipe up on the tab bar (URL bar) to switch to grid view. Then long-press the “Done” button at the bottom-right corner and tap “Close All # Tabs”. All your open tabs will close at once.
How to copy links of all open tabs in Safari on iPhone
iOS 15 offers the ability to copy links of all open tabs in Safari on iPhone. This comes in handy when you want to email or share the list of all your open tabs outside of Safari.
To save links of all open tabs in Safari on iOS 15,
- Tap the “Tab Overview” button in the menu bar or swipe up on the address bar.
- Tap the ellipsis button (3-dots icon), shown next to the particular tab group.
- Open to the Notes app or a messaging client and paste the data.
That’s it. All the links will appear in a bulleted list and in chronological order. Note that you can copy links of all your Private tabs as well.
How to refresh a webpage in Safari on iOS 15
Can’t find the reload button in iOS 15’s Safari to refresh a website that’s stuck in the middle?
To refresh a page or tab in Safari on iOS 15, simply tap the reload button (circular arrow icon) on the right side of the address bar.
Alternative Way – In iOS 15, Safari features a new “Pull to Refresh” gesture that lets you reload a webpage by pulling down a page from the top.
Note : Pull down to refresh is indeed a quicker way to refresh but only if you’re already at the top or start of a webpage. Meanwhile, if you’re at the bottom of a long page then you first have to scroll all the way to the top to refresh. This also means that you will lose your earlier position on the webpage.
How to use Reader View in iOS 15’s Safari
Safari on iOS 15 briefly shows a “Reader Available” popup in the address bar when you visit a website that supports reading mode. By switching to reader mode, you can hide ads and menus from the webpage for an uncluttered and distraction-free experience. Before you use Reader View, note that it only works on supported websites such as Medium.com.
To turn on reading mode in Safari on iOS 15, tap the aA button on the left side of the address bar. Then select the “ Show Reader View ” option from the list.
Shortcut – To quickly switch to reader view, simply long-press the aA icon on the tab bar. The webpage will immediately change to reading mode and the aA button will turn black, indicating reader view is enabled.
How to see Downloads in Safari on iOS 15
In iOS 15’s Safari, the Downloads folder is completely missing and it isn’t hidden behind any menus either.
So, where are my downloads? The fact is that the downloads directory doesn’t appear permanently. You can see it in Safari only after you download a certain file. The Downloads menu then disappears automatically after a while.
To find your Safari downloads in iOS 15 on iPhone , just download a file. A download button (down arrow icon) will now show up on the left side of the bottom tab bar. Once downloading is done, tap the download button and select “Downloads” from the list. Here you can manage your recently downloaded items with options to view, delete, or clear them.
How to Rearrange Tabs in Safari on iOS 15

- Once you see all tabs in a grid view, press and hold a tab that you want to move.
- Once done, tap the Done button at the bottom right corner.
How to Hide Frequently Visited Sites in Safari on iOS 15

To disable frequently visited sites on Safari’s Start Page in iOS 15,
- Swipe up on the tab bar (URL bar).
- Tap the + button at the bottom left corner to open the start page.
- Close the customization screen.
TIP : You can also remove or delete specific sites from the “Frequently Visited” section on the start page. For this, long-press a frequently visited tab you want to remove. Then tap “Delete”.
How to install extensions in Safari on iPhone
With iOS 15, Web extensions for Safari are finally available on iPhone and iPad. However, you won’t find the option to install extensions anywhere within the Safari app. Nevertheless, there is a much simpler way to do so.
To add extensions to Safari in iOS 15 on iPhone,
- Open Settings and scroll down to Safari .
- Go to ‘Extensions’ and tap on “More Extensions”.
- Install the extension you want from the App Store, just the way you install an iOS app.
- Head back to “Extensions” in Settings.
TIP : You can enable or disable Safari web extensions at any point in time without having to delete them. Just go to the Extensions menu in Settings and turn off the extension.
How to Add a Tab Group in Safari
In iOS 15, you can use the Tab Groups feature to group tabs in Safari on iPhone and iPad. One can add multiple tab groups and even create a group of all open tabs.
To create a Tab Group in Safari on iOS 15,
- Swipe up on the URL bar (or tap the ‘Tab Switcher’ button) to open the tab overview page.
- Tap on “# Tabs” in the center of the tab bar.
- Give your tab group a name and tap Save.
- Once the tab group is created, open the desired tabs while you’re in that particular tab group.
TIP : You can also move tabs from one tab group to another. To do so, navigate to the tab overview screen and long-press a tab. Then tap “Move to Tab Group” and select the Tab Group you want to move the tab to.

Not intuitive. Step zero in finding/using bookmarks is to actually be in some webpage on Safari! Often when you tap Safari the screen brings you different search engines, not a webpage. So I didn’t know what to do to find the book icon. Also, not intuitive what the definition of “three tabs menu”. The icons at the bottom when I found them do not look like any browser tabs I’ve ever seen. Not meaning to natter, just saying that as a brand new user to anything Apple, I am not finding it to be very user friendly. An instruction will say to click or tap on “something”, and then I have to go search for what/where is “something”. And this leads sometimes to a long chain of looking up “somethings”. This website does help, and I’d be lost without it. So, thanks!
It was helpful, thanks

New WebKit Features in Safari 15
Oct 26, 2021
by Jen Simmons
With the release of Safari 15 for macOS Monterey, iPadOS 15, iOS 15, and watchOS, as well as macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina, WebKit brings significant advancements in privacy and security, improved interoperability, and a host of new features for web developers. Take a look.
Web Extensions
This release brings Safari Web Extensions to iOS and iPadOS. Web Extensions use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to offer powerful browser customizations. Now developers can create them for every device that supports Safari, using APIs, functionality, and permissions that are increasingly standardized across all browsers. Learn how to build Safari Web Extensions and discover how to convert an existing extension by watching Meet Safari Web Extensions on iOS at WWDC21.
This year’s release also adds support for the Declarative Net Request WebExtensions API to block content on the web. Learn all about the latest WebExtension APIs by watching Explore Safari Web Extension Improvements at WWDC21.
WebKit now provides support for theme-color in HTML meta tags, and in Web Manifest. By specifying a theme-color, web developers can change the color of the status bar and overscroll area in Safari on iOS 15. Theme-color also changes the Tab Bar and overscroll area background colors in Compact Tab layout for Safari 15 on macOS Monterey and Big Sur and iPadOS 15.
In the HTML meta tag, developers can specify separate colors for Dark Mode and light appearance with the media attribute.
Watch “Design for Safari 15” at WWDC21 to learn more about the Compact Tab bar and how to use theme-color.
WebKit now supports CSS aspect-ratio . This property can be used to set a preferred aspect ratio on any element, including boxes like divs , iframes for embedded video, or graphic design elements on a page.
WebKit provides support for the new lab() , lch() , hwb() color syntaxes from Color level 4 , providing web developers with ways to express a richer range of colors in Lab, Lch, and Hue-Whiteness-Blackness. WebKit also supports predefined color spaces using the color() function syntax: srgb , display-p3 , a98-rgb , prophoto-rgb , rec2020 , xyz .
WebKit supports 12 new values for list-style-type : disclosure-closed , disclosure-open , ethiopic-numeric , japanese-formal , japanese-informal , korean-hangul-formal , korean-hanja-formal , korean-hanja-informal , simp-chinese-formal , simp-chinese-informal , trad-chinese-formal , and trad-chinese-informal .
There’s also improved implementation of existing values for list-style-type : armenian , cjk-ideographic , hebrew , lower-armenian , lower-roman , upper-armenian , and upper-roman . See a demo of all of these options at MDN. We also updated WebKit’s implementation of list-style-position:inside to match the updated CSS specification , creating interoperability after a 22 year old debate .
Watch “Design for Safari 15” at WWDC21 to learn more about the latest updates to CSS.
Web Inspector
Web Inspector in Safari 15 includes a CSS Grid Inspector overlay for inspecting grid containers on your pages. Watch “Discover Web Inspector Improvements” at WWDC21 to learn more.
JavaScript and WebAssembly
This release of WebKit adds support for ES6 Modules in Workers and ServiceWorkers. ES6 Modules provides a powerful way for developers to organize large applications using purpose-specific libraries. Workers/Service Workers provides a way to offload work from the main thread, and are often used for complex applications. Now, developers can use them together — moving work off the main thread, improving performance, while retaining the organizational benefits of modules.
Additional new capabilities to the JavaScript engine, include:
- support for top-level await
- Error.cause
- private class methods and accessors
- BigInt64Array and BigUint64Array
Improvements to WebAssembly include streaming compilation, bulk memory operations, reference types, and non-trapping conversions from float to int .
You can learn more about the latest JavaScript and WebAssembly updates to WebKit and Safari 15 by watching “Develop Advanced Web Content” at WWDC21.
WebKit now supports WebGL2 ( demos ). In addition, the WebGL implementation now runs on top of Metal for better performance.
Web Share level 2 enhancements to Web Share enable sharing files from a web page to an app. See Web Share API for more information.
User gestures now propagate through requestAnimationFrame with a one-second time limit.
And now, with Safari 15.1, performance.timeOrigin is available in Web Workers.
You can learn more about the latest Web APIs in WebKit by watching “Develop Advanced Web Content” at WWDC21.
Safari 15 includes several media improvements for users and developers. For example, built-in media controls now have Playback Speed and Chapters menus. Plus, the language/subtitle tracks menu is now available on iOS and iPadOS.
There’s also new support for the Opus audio codec in WebM containers. And on on all iPads that support iPadOS 15, VP9 and WebM in Media Source Extensions (MSE) are now hardware-accelerated.
Safari 15 also adds support for the MediaSession API to enable SharePlay experiences. You can learn more about creating SharePlay experiences by watching “Coordinate media playback in Safari with Group Activities” at WWDC21.
Security and Privacy
Continuing our dedication to privacy and security, Safari on iOS 15 and macOS Monterey supports automatic HTTPS upgrades and hides your IP address from known trackers. Automatic HTTPS upgrades are also supported in Safari 15 on older macOS versions.
Earlier this year, Safari was the first browser to ship a proposed web standard for measuring advertising in a privacy-preserving way – Private Click Measurement , or PCM. Safari 15 provides three major updates to PCM:
- Attribution reports also sent to click destination.
- Click fraud prevention with unlinkable tokens.
- IP address protection for attribution reports.
To learn more, read PCM: Click Fraud Prevention and Attribution Sent to Advertiser or watch “Meet privacy-preserving ad attribution” at WWDC21.
Authentication and Passwords
WebKit now includes support for on-device verification codes in your app or website for a more secure sign-in experience with iCloud Keychain Password Manager. To use verification codes with Safari and Autofill:
- Use autocomplete=one-time-code to make an <input> eligible for AutoFill.
- Use a standard otpauth URL and replace the scheme with apple-otpauth to link directly to the password manager for setup.
- Use a raster image to enable contextual menus on otpauth QR codes that offer to set up a verification code generator.
Learn how to support the process in your apps and websites by watching “Secure login with iCloud Keychain verification codes” at WWDC21.
Despite their prevalence, passwords inherently come with challenges that make them poorly suited to securing someone’s online accounts. Passkeys are WebAuth credentials intended to replace passwords for websites and apps with device sync and backup. The technology is now available in WebKit as a preview. To enable in Safari, choose Develop > Enable Syncing Platform Authenticator. Learn more watching “Move beyond passwords” at WWDC21.
Apple Pay enhancements allow developers using the Payment Request API to indicate an estimated arrival date for shipping methods, support a coupon code, and mark the shipping method as in-store pickup.
Availability
These improvements are available to users running Safari on iPadOS 15, iOS 15, or Safari 15 on macOS Monterey, macOS Big Sur, or macOS Catalina. These features were also available to web developers in Safari Technology Preview releases. Changes in this release of Safari were included in the following Safari Technology Preview releases: 123 , 124 , 125 , 126 , 127 , 128 , 129 .
Download the latest Safari Technology Preview release to stay at the forefront of future web platform and Web Inspector features. You can also use the WebKit Feature Status page to watch for changes to web platform features you’re interested in.
If you run into any issues, we welcome your bug reports for Safari or WebKit bugs for web content issues. Send us a tweet @webkit to share your thoughts on this release.
Download: Safari 15.6.1 for Catalina and Big Sur Released
Apple has just released Safari 15.6.1 for macOS Catalina and macOS Big Sur with important fixes.
You Can Now Download Safari 15.6.1 Update with Extremely Important Security Fixes if You’re Using macOS Catalina or Big Sur
If you refuse to update to macOS Monterey, or your Mac simply does not support the latest version of Apple’s desktop operating system, there’s an important Safari update waiting for you.
Related Story Musician Turns An iPhone Ringtone In A Complete Song That You Will Listen To On Repeat
Bumped to version 15.6.1, this new update to Safari is available for both macOS Catalina and macOS Big Sur users. While this update does not add anything new to the web browser, it is an extremely important release since it introduces security fixes for a WebKit vulnerability.
According to Apple :
Available for: macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina. Impact: Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited. Description: An out-of-bounds write issue was addressed with improved bounds checking.
If that completely phased you out, then let me put it in simple words - just update to Safari 15.6.1 in order to keep your online activity safe at all times. Staying on the latest version of any software at all is always a great idea.
In order to download the new update, all you have to do is go to System Preferences > Software Update . Just wait for the page to refresh, and the new update will show up in a bit. Install it whenever it shows up.
If you’ve set your Mac to automatically download and install updates, then the update should install within a day or two on its own. But of course, since Safari 15.6.1 is an extremely updated release, therefore it is a good idea to download and install it manually as quickly as possible.

How to install TrollStore on iOS 14.0-16.6.1 with TrollInstallerX
In case you’ve been living under a rock, there’s a new TrollStore installation method on the block called TrollInstallerX by iOS developer @alfiecg_dev , and it’s arguably one of the easiest ways to put TrollStore on your device aside from TrollHelperOTA.
As promised, we’re here today to talk about how to use TrollInstallerX so that anyone who might be interested in trying this TrollStore installation method can get started with it at their earliest convenience. We’ll outline the process step-by-step, from start to finish.
What you need to know about TrollInstallerX
Before getting started with TrollInstallerX, you need to understand what it is, what it isn’t, and whether you should consider an alternative TrollStore installation method.
TrollInstallerX supports arm64 (iPhone X and older) and arm64e (iPhone XS and newer) devices running iOS & iPadOS versions 14.0-16.6.1. It also supports iOS & iPadOS 17.0 beta 1, beta 2, beta 3, and beta 4 on arm64 devices only. The iOS & iPadOS 17.0 public release is not supported.
TrollInstallerX exists because the developer wanted a method to install TrollStore on compatible devices without sacrificing a system app to do so, such as the Tips app. It does this by using the Kernel File Descriptor ( KFD ) kernel exploit and the dmaFail PPL bypass for devices that require the latter.
While TrollInstallerX can do this on many device and firmware combinations, there are a few exceptions on which you will still need to sacrifice a system app. We’ll outline that below:
- Direct installation: Works on iOS & iPadOS 14.0-16.6.1 on arm64 devices and works on iOS & iPadOS 14.0-16.5.1 on arm64e devices — excluding A15, A16, and M2 devices on iOS & iPadOS 16.5.1. A8 devices are only supported on iOS & iPadOS 14.0-15.1 until further notice.
- Indirect installation: Works on iOS & iPadOS 16.5.1-16.6.1 on arm64e devices due to the lack of a PPL bypass on iOS & iPadOS 16.6 and later. This is the o my method that works on A15, A16, and M2 devices on iOS & iPadOS 16.5.1.
Another thing we should note is that TrollInstallerX needs to be sideloaded with AltStore or Sideloadly before you can use it, which means using a computer. If you don’t have a computer, then TrollHelperOTA would be the better method for you because you can use TrollHelperOTA to install TrollStore on iOS 14.0-15.6.1 without a computer.
Once you’ve installed TrollStore on your device, you can choose to remove TrollInstallerX on your device or remove it. This is completely up to you.
Please note that TrollInstallerX will not jailbreak your device. After installing TrollStore, you may be able to use the Dopamine jailbreak or the Serotonin ‘semi-jailbreak’ to install jailbreak tweaks on your device.
TrollStore, the end product of using TrollInstallerX, is a perma-signing utility that lets you permanently install .ipa files on your iPhone similarly to sideloading, except that you won’t need to re-sign those app(s) every seven days with an Apple ID . It does this with a powerful CoreTrust bug.
If you’re ready to use TrollInstallerX to install TrollStore on your iPhone or iPad, then you can follow the steps below to get started.
Installing TrollStore with TrollInstallerX
To install TrollStore 2 with TrollInstallerX, you will need to follow the steps outlined below:
1) Download and install Sideloadly if you don’t already have it.
Note: You can also use AltStore if you’re more comfortable with that over Sideloadly, but we’ll be using Sideloadly for the purposes of this tutorial since it has less setup.
2) Launch Sideloadly .
3) Connect your iPhone or iPad to your Mac and be sure to “Trust” it via the prompts in Finder and on the device itself.
Note: You may not need to “trust” your iPhone or iPad if you regularly connect it to your Mac and have already trusted it previously.
4) Visit the following URL in your favorite web browser:
5) Click the latest .ipa file in the releases list to download it:
6) Find the downloaded file and drag it into Sideloadly :
7) Select your iPhone or iPad from the combo box in the Sideloadly window:
8) Enter your Apple ID in the Apple ID field.
9) Click the Start button.
10) Enter your Apple ID password when prompted to proceed:
Note: Your Apple ID is used to sign the app, so you are required to enter your password for authentication with Apple’s servers. You may make a burner Apple ID if you wish, but this isn’t necessary.
11) Click the OK button to move on.
Note: Once Sideloadly finishes, TrollInstallerX will be installed on oyur device. Don’t attempt to launch it just yet.
12) Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad and navigate to General → VPN & Device Management and tap on your Apple ID :
13) Tap the blue Trust button with your Apple ID email inside of it:
14) Tap on the red Trust button in the subsequent pop-up to confirm.
15) Launch the TrollInstallerX app:
16) If you get the prompt recommending TrollHelperOTA, but you prefer to use TrollInstallerX, then tap anywhere outside of the prompt to dismiss it :
17) In the next prompt, tap on the Unsandbox button :
18) Tap OK in the unsandboxing prompt that appears next:
19) Tap the Install TrollStore button :
20) When prompted about a Persistence Helper, choose an app to load it into (such as Tips) or scroll all the way down and choose No Persistence Helper if you are using the direct installation method:
21) TrollInstallerX walks you through the entire install process as it works behind the scenes:
21) When finished, launch TrollStore from your Home Screen:
Enjoy TrollStore and perma-signing capabilities!
TrollInstallerX is the latest and most streamlined way to install TrollStore on iPhones and iPads, in many cases without sacrificing one of your device’s system apps to do so as has been required with previous installation methods.

iOS 18 rumored to have a mysterious Safari Browsing Assistant feature
An iPhone running iOS 17
Apple is a few months away from introducing the new features it will be including in iOS 18 at WWDC 2024. As the rumor mill ramps up ahead of the event, two new features have surfaced that could improve how users browse the internet.
According to Nicolas Alvarez on X, the features are titled "Safari browsing assistant" and "Encrypted visual search." Alvarez doesn't go into detail about the features of each, but does say that they each appear to use the Private Relay infrastructure to send data to Apple.
Though actual details of the features remain unknown, the names do at least offer some hint as to what they could be.
Coming in iOS 18: - "Safari browsing assistant" - "Encrypted visual search" Both features seem to use the Private Relay infrastructure to send data to Apple (so that they don't know your IP?). — Nicols lvarez (@nicolas09F9) April 10, 2024
The Safari Browsing Assistant could is naturally linked to Safari itself, but the name may mean some sort of intelligent help could be summoned for users trying to accomplish tasks. Since Apple has been working on AI and machine learning, there's a good chance the technologies will be in play here.
The other, Encrypted Visual Search, could be an evolution of existing search systems available in its operating systems. For example, Spotlight does allow for the content of images to be found, while Visual Look Up offers more information about items detected in images.
Alvarez is uncertain as to what exactly is being changed with Encrypted Visual Search, other than "better privacy" for users. However, Visual Search has also been mentioned in visionOS , albeit not used in the software itself.
It's also entirely plausible that it could be Apple attempting to provide an image-based search system, similar to the function in Google Image Search. But, since Apple doesn't want to offer a full-blown search engine to the public just yet, this seems a little doubtful.
Other recently discovered features include Apple Maps routes , a redesign inspired by visionOS, and more home screen customizations .

New iOS 18 Safari browsing assistant feature tipped as Apple's iPhone AI plans come into focus
Apple's AI plans are afoot.
With Apple set to announce the iPhone's iOS 18 software update at WWDC 2024 on June 10, we continue to hear various tidbits about what the software might have to offer when it's finally previewed to the world. Apple has been characteristically tight-lipped about the whole thing, but a new report suggests that changes are coming to the way people browse the internet on their iPhones.
According to some newly-discovered backend code, Apple appears to be working on a new Safari browsing assistant feature, although at this point it's difficult to know what that will actually do or how it will benefit iPhone owners everywhere. However, that doesn't mean that we can't make some calculated guesses.
Those guesses are informed by the ongoing narrative that we can expect a boom in Apple AI features with the release of iOS 18, something that is also tipped for the Mac with macOS 15 . If Apple really will, as is heavily rumored, lean on AI for a number of impressive new features this WWDC, it's possible that the Safari browsing assistant feature will do much the same. And that could be very interesting indeed.
AI browsing
The code was first spotted by Nicolás Álvarez and shared on the X social network. According to the post, references were found to Safari browsing assistant and something called Encrypted Visual Search. Both features are thought to make use of Apple's iCloud Private Relay infrastructure to send data to Apple which suggests that there will be some sort of privacy or security angle to them. If that's the case, users may require an iCloud Plus subscription to use them.
Safari browsing assistant could well be a byproduct of Apple's focus on generative AI which could in turn mean that users will be able to have their iPhone go off and find information for them based on internet searches. Siri can already do that to some extent and with wildly varying degrees of success. But ChatGPT 4 can already do this to a much more impressive extent, as can similar chatbot tools from others.
As for the Encrypted Visual Search reference, it's possible that could be an expansion of the Visual Look Up feature that allows people to identify things within photos and videos, but we will need to wait and see how that one pans out.
If Apple follows the release cadence we're all familiar with, the new software announcements will happen on June 10 with developers immediately given an early beta to test. However, the public will have to wait until the fall to install them on their personal devices. A launch in mid-September seems most likely, probably shortly before the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro officially go on sale.

WWDC will see more than just iOS 18 and macOS 15 previewed, with the iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and more all receiving big updates. The Apple Vision Pro will also likely be updated to visionOS 2 later this year and that software is also expected to be previewed at WWDC before following a similar months-long beta program.
