There are so many luggage scales out there, it can be stressful to choose one. Since they range in size, price, and shape, we took it upon ourselves to put 15 options to the test. Some proved to be perfectly accurate when we weighed 10- and 25-pound kettlebells, while others were not accurate at all, and others even broke en route to our lab, showing that shopping for a simple luggage scale may not be as easy as you think.

Here are the six reliable luggage scales that we tested and can’t recommend enough for travelers looking for peace of mind when it comes to weighing a suitcase.

Best Overall

Lifting luggage requires a lot of effort so we love that this handy digital scale has a non-slip grip material on the inside of the handle to make it easier to hold on to the scale while you measure the weight. The scale turns on with a simple click of a button that also controls the settings from pounds to kilograms — and it also has a temperature gauge in both Celsius and Fahrenheit options. We had no issues hooking the loop through a luggage handle and securing the clip back onto the scale, and we found that the scale was extremely accurate, varying just a few ounces from the kettlebell weights we used. We also like that the screen holds the final weight so you have time to read the number. It’s also super compact, which makes it easy to toss into your bag after you weigh it to have the scale on hand for your return trip home.

Our Travel + Leisure team has tested hundreds of suitcases in our lab, and we always measure the weight of the suitcases with this handy scale. A testament to the durability of the device, this scale can withstand time and rough handling, especially if you stuff it into your checked bag after making sure it’s underweight. It’s intuitive to use with two buttons to turn the device on and off or to switch between units of measurement, and the fabric loop with a metal clip is easy to attach to a luggage handle. With just a few ounces of weight difference using several kettlebells, we think it’s mostly accurate, but we always think it’s smart to give yourself some wiggle room with luggage weight, just in case. It’s the most accurate scale we tested under $10.

It doesn’t have a non-slip grip like other scales we tested.

If you’re in a hurry to get a few last-minute items before a trip (like a luggage scale, of course), this wallet-friendly one is a great option that can arrive quickly thanks to Amazon Prime’s two-day shipping. In testing, senior editor Jasmine Grant loved how intuitive the scale is to use with the no-frills design. There are two buttons on the scale: one for turning the device on and off and the other for switching between pound and kilograms or to use the temperature gauge. Similar to our overall pick, this scale was accurate with the 10- and 25-pound kettlebell weights we used with just a few ounces of discrepancy. The scale is extremely lightweight and compact for storing at home or in a suitcase, but because of its compact size, it was slightly less comfortable to grip — which isn’t a deal-breaker for us.

Best Built-in Measuring Tape

The handle is made from steel with a rubber coating, which feels extremely durable.

The metal hook could be a bit bigger to accommodate large luggage handles.

Airlines have been cracking down on luggage requirements and baggage fees , so we love that this scale comes with a built-in tape measure. This can be particularly useful for expandable luggage, as you can use the tape measure to see if your carry-on is small enough to fit the airline restrictions for the overhead bins. Besides the helpful extra feature for measuring size, the scale also impressed us with an ultra-durable design that feels like it can endure even the roughest of luggage handling at the airport. The handle is made with steel metal coated in rubber for a superior grip, and the screen is much bigger than other scales we tested so you can easily see the weight in kilograms or pounds. The scale was no more than five ounces off when we measured the kettlebells, and the hook makes it easy to lift luggage from the handle (unless the handle is super thick, then it might be more difficult). T+L testing editor Jackie Cucco also appreciated that the scale screen says “hi” and “bye” when she turned it on and off with the press of a button.

Best Battery-free

Ozeri twist-and-go kinetic kitchen and luggage scale.

All you have to do is twist the device to light up the screen.

The loop doesn’t have a clip, which makes it difficult to attach luggage.

The beauty of this motion-powered device is that you won’t have to worry about batteries dying when you’re traveling. We twisted the device about four times to activate the digital screen, which has a little battery icon to depict when it’s low on power and needs kinetic energy to charge up. Like other scales we tried, this one read just a few ounces off from the kettlebells we weighed, so we think it’s as accurate as possible. The small, circular shape makes it easy to store in a drawer at home or in a pocket of a carry-on backpack since it’s very compact. Because it doesn’t have an ergonomic handle, the grip isn’t as good as T-shape luggage scales, but this one is quite a bit smaller, which is a plus for packing. Another thing to note is that the loop doesn’t have a clip that comes off of the rope, so you’ll have to snake the device through the loop to get it to attach to luggage.

Best Manual

Samsonite manual scale.

This was the only device we tested with perfect weight accuracy.

It’s a bit larger and heavier than digital scales.

The most accurate luggage scale we tried, this manual one from Samsonite provided the most accurate reading for our 10- and 25-pound weights. All of the digital scales we tested were just a few ounces off — which isn’t unusual when it’s not a large discrepancy — but we were pleased to see this one depict an exact “10” and “25” on the weight scale. The scale is large enough to read quickly but when we picked up a 50-pound suitcase, it was a little harder to read with shaky hands. However, the handle is comfortable to hold, and you can safely secure the hook to a suitcase once you shimmy it under the handle. It’s a bit bigger than a digital scale, but we think it’s worth it for a durable and completely accurate scale (that also doesn’t require any batteries or extra effort to turn on).

Other Luggage Scales We Liked

Out of the 15 luggage scales we tried, there were a few that didn’t quite make our list of best scales due to some minor inconsistencies noted below.

Taylor Ultra Light Digital Luggage Scale : It’s easy to use, and we love that it beeps once the reading is complete. However, the materials feel a bit flimsy, and that made us question the durability of the scale.

Travelon Stop & Lock Luggage Scale : Similar to the best manual scale we tested, this one was spot-on accurate, but the handle is uncomfortable to hold and the materials feel cheaply made.

Tumi Electronic Luggage Scale : This scale is sleek and compact, but it didn’t have the most accurate reading and comes at a premium price tag ($75).

A luggage scale may seem like a simple product to purchase, but trust us when we say there are some less-than-ideal options on the market. After researching and purchasing a variety of luggage scales, we had all of them shipped to our New York City lab and some showed up broken, cracked, and one was even leaking oil. However, after testing the 15 scales that were usable, we found six that stood out from others for several reasons. While numerical accuracy is extremely important, we didn’t fault any scales that were just a few ounces off from the 10- and 25-pound kettlebell weights and 50-pound suitcase we lifted.

We also judged the scales on how easy it was to use and operate each one and noted how durable and functional the buttons, loops, hooks, screens, and handles were. Since the scales came in different sizes, materials, and shapes, we also took note of how comfortable they were to lift heavy objects and if the materials felt built to last.

Tips for Buying Luggage Scales

Decide if you want something digital or manual.

Based on our testing experience, there are pros and cons to both manual and digital scales. The digital scales were generally more lightweight and easier to read than the clunkier manual scales without backlit LCD screens. However, the manual scales are the most accurate ones and don’t require batteries or charging, so you’ll never have to worry about the device dying while traveling.

Look for preferred units of measurement

While the U.S. uses the imperial system, the rest of the world uses the metric system, so be sure to get a luggage scale with your preferred unit of measurement. Since some international airlines will list their weight restrictions in kilograms, it might be nice to have a scale that has both so you don’t have to attempt mental math while in a hurry to weigh and check your bag. Additionally, some digital scales also come with a temperature gauge in Fahrenheit or Celsius, which could be helpful for travelers.

Pay attention to additional features

Luggage scales might seem like they only have one job, but some come with special features for more than one task. Some devices have tape measures and temperature gauges built in, and some luggage scales are motion-powered, which uses kinetic energy to charge the digital screen of the scale without needing batteries. Also, be sure to double-check the weight limit of luggage scales, as that can vary as well, and you don’t want to break your scale by overloading it.

A luggage scale will usually come with instructions, but in general, all you have to do is attach the scale to a suitcase via the hook or loop on the scale, and then turn on the device before lifting up the luggage. Once you lift the luggage by the scale, wait for the scale or screen (if digital) to hold a number to get the accurate reading. Most digital scales have the ability to tare if you’re looking to do some specific weight measurements.

Scales are allowed on airplanes in checked or carry-on bags. If you measure your bag before getting to the airport and you’re right on the cusp of the weight limit, you might want to put the scale in your personal item to avoid going over the weight limit by accident.

A bathroom scale can work to measure luggage at home. However, if your hotel or accommodations doesn’t have a scale for the journey home, then you’ll be left guessing, which is risky. One of the best parts of a luggage scale is that it’s specifically designed with portability in mind so you’ll never have to worry about luggage limitations or the fees that come with it.

BASIC FUNCTIONS

The power button is used to turn unit on/off and reset it. The kg/lb button is used to change weight unit and to select the weighing mode. In all modes, the most accurate reading is achieved by lifting your luggage slowly and steadily and holding your luggage still. In case the luggage moves, the scale takes multiple readings and compares those before displaying stabilized weight reading. Three weighing modes are available:

• Lock mode (locked padlock icon) – Most accurate mode. Scale locks in on weight after several seconds.
• Unlock mode (open padlock icon) – Scale is continuously weighing luggage. Please note the display does not lock in on one weight reading. This mode should be used for adding or removing weight.
• Peak mode (graph icon) – Most convenient mode. Scale locks in weight within less than half a second.

Please note: Travel Smart Luggage Scale weight may vary slightly from airport scale.

To change the weight unit from pounds to kilograms or vice versa, press and hold the kg/lb button for 2 seconds, until the former unit (kg or lb) starts to blink, then press the kg/lb button again to change unit measurement. Selected unit will blink for 3 seconds to register selection.

• Press the kg/lb button repeatedly until the locked padlock appears on the display to activate the lock mode.
• Attach luggage to hook and lift steadily. "000" will flash until luggage weight is stabilized (hold luggage as still as possible). Display will then read stabilized weight.

• To weigh more pieces of luggage, press the power button once to reset the scale and repeat weighing process.
• The scale will shut off automatically 60 seconds after displaying the last weight, giving you time to set down your luggage and check the weight. To turn the scale off manually, press and hold the power button for 2 seconds.

• Press the kg/lb repeatedly until the open padlock appears on the display to activate the unlock mode.
• Attach luggage to hook and lift steadily. "000" will flash. The display reading will automatically update as weight is added/ removed from luggage.

• The scale will shut off automatically 60 seconds after displaying the last weight. To turn the scale off manually, press and hold the power button for 2 seconds.

• Press the kg/lb button repeatedly until the graph appears on the display to activate the peak mode.
• Attach luggage to hook and lift steadily.
• Highest weight reading will display after a few seconds.

• The scale will shut off automatically 60 seconds after displaying the last weight, giving you time to set down your luggage and check the weight on the display. To turn the scale off manually, press and hold the power button for 2 seconds.

Note: If the weight of your luggage is close to 50 lbs, we recommend that you confirm it using the lock mode. The peak mode is the most convenient mode because it only requires you to lift the luggage for a fraction of a second, but this mode is slightly less accurate than the lock mode.

To replace batteries: If the scale batteries need to be replaced, remove the screw on the back of the scale per the icon, lift the snap of the battery cover on the bottom of the scale and replace the old batteries with two 3V lithium batteries (CR2032). Properly dispose of old batteries. Remove the batteries if they are no longer functional or if the scale is left unused for an extended period of time.

Please note: Certain weather conditions can cause electrostatic discharge when you pick up the scale, causing it to temporarily malfunction. Open battery door, remove batteries and insert batteries again. If scale still does not work, replace batteries.

Modifications not approved by the party responsible for compliance could void user's authority to operate the equipment.

When replacing the batteries, make sure you dispose of the old batteries in accordance with applicable regulations. They should be disposed of in a location specifi cally designated for that purpose so they can be recycled safely and without posing any risk to the environment. Do not burn or }bury them.

How to get to Suzdal from Moscow

If you are ever in Moscow, you should look at The Golden Ring , a ring of towns and cities north east of Moscow which played an important part in the formation of Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church. The towns themselves are almost like museums and none more so than the jewel of the Golden Ring, Suzdal . You have to visit this town if you are in Moscow and I will tell you exactly how to get to Suzdal from Moscow.

You can do this in a return day trip to Moscow, just, but I recommend staying the night in Suzdal. That will give you the afternoon on the 1st day and the morning and early afternoon on the 2nd day to explore which should be enough time. You can get a bus from Moscow to Suzdal. However, there is only one bus a day and it is not very comfortable. A better option is to get a train to the nearby city of Vladimir and from there get a bus to Suzdal. There are multiple trains every day from Moscow and buses are almost every 30 minutes so you will not have to wait long in Vladimir.

Getting the train to Vladimir

Go to the state run website for Russian railways . In the departure station, click (or type) ‘MOSKVA’, in the arrival station type ‘VLADIMIR”, select your departure date (and return if you will go back to Moscow the next day) and click on the buy ticket button. You will have multiple trains to choose from. The fastest trains do the journey in about 1 hour 45 minutes. Be sure to check which of the Moscow train stations your train will depart from. More than likely this will be Mockva Kurskaia. Whichever station it is, you can get there very easily by using the metro .

Getting Bus from Vladimir to Suzdal

When you arrive at the train station, follow everyone else that is leaving the train station. When you get outside, if you look across the street, you will see the bus station. The facilities in the bus and train station are pretty basic. the train station is a little better so if you want a coffee or something to eat, I would get it there.

In the bus station go to the ticket office and get a single ticket to Suzdal. Something like “odin billet Suzdal” should be enough to be understood. The ticket costs 98.50 rubles so its easier to have a 100 ruble note to get change from.

My ticket to Suzdal is bus number 159, platform 10 at 12:00 and seat number 6.

When you have your ticket, go outside to the platform listed on the ticket and wait for the bus. Simple really!

There are a lot of accommodation options available in Suzdal. The place i stayed is Suzdal Hotel . It is actually a house and they have a few rooms available. The breakfast that is included is very very good. Trust me on this. They will even collect you from the bus station in Suzdal and bring you back the next day.

Returning to Vladimir (and Moscow)

To return to Vladimir, just repeat these steps in the opposite direction – return to the bus station in Suzdal, buy a ticket to Vladimir and continue your onward journey in Russia. Simples! 😉

I had never heard of Suzdal until now. Thank you for introducing me to a new place. It looks so calm and quiet under the snow. What are some things to do in Suzdal?

I think it is the sort of place you go to get away from the craziness of big cities and have some slower, quiet time. If my memory is correct, they also have a cucumber festival once a year every July. Apparently the cucumbers of the area are very good!

Moscow Travel Meeting - 16 November, 2019

Looking forward to seeing several of the Moscow Region Travel Group on Saturday, 16 November at 10:30 at One World Café, 533 South Main Street in Moscow...IDAHO! We get to have the "Back Room" till 1:00 so you're welcome to come and go as you need--we're very laid back! Some of us have just returned from trips so we can expect some great Trip Reports but we also thoroughly enjoy helping plan trips, answer questions, love new tips and suggestions. Everyone's experience and perspectives are fascinating! You'll see a world map on the table in the Back Room as well as several Rick Steves' guide books, maps or miscellaneous Show & Tell items for travel. (Anyone have something for Show & Tell?) Please let us know if you will be there so we can be sure to have plenty of chairs. Because of the busy season and the usual challenges with the snowy roads, we don't meet in December. Our next meeting will be January 18, 2020. Looking forward to seeing you!

You'll probably be out of the fog once you get to the top of Lewiston Hill. It's not foggy in Troy right now so I suspect no fog in Moscow or Genesee either.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

• Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
• Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
• How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
• What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
• What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
• What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.

Title: long-term forecasts of statewide travel demand patterns using large-scale mobile phone gps data: a case study of indiana.

Abstract: The growth in availability of large-scale GPS mobility data from mobile devices has the potential to aid traditional travel demand models (TDMs) such as the four-step planning model, but those processing methods are not commonly used in practice. In this study, we show the application of trip generation and trip distribution modeling using GPS data from smartphones in the state of Indiana. This involves extracting trip segments from the data and inferring the phone users' home locations, adjusting for data representativeness, and using a data-driven travel time-based cost function for the trip distribution model. The trip generation and interchange patterns in the state are modeled for 2025, 2035, and 2045. Employment sectors like industry and retail are observed to influence trip making behavior more than other sectors. The travel growth is predicted to be mostly concentrated in the suburban regions, with a small decline in the urban cores. Further, although the majority of the growth in trip flows over the years is expected to come from the corridors between the major urban centers of the state, relative interzonal trip flow growth will likely be uniformly spread throughout the state. We also validate our results with the forecasts of two travel demand models, finding a difference of 5-15% in overall trip counts. Our GPS data-based demand model will contribute towards augmenting the conventional statewide travel demand model developed by the state and regional planning agencies.

The stone arches looped solemnly over their shadows, some teetering above the grass, some sinking into it. It was a dazzling January morning, and I was standing in the Park of the Aqueducts , about 20 minutes by metro from central Rome. Here, the ruined arcades of six of the 11 aqueducts that once supplied the Eternal City with an astonishing volume of water — by some counts double the per capita water allotment of a typical 21st-century American city — have been preserved.

My aim was to trace the course of one of them: the Aqua Marcia, built between 144 and 140 B.C. by Julius Caesar’s ancestor Quintus Marcius Rex.

Hailed by Pliny the Elder as “the most famous of all waters in the world for coldness and wholesomeness,” the Marcia was also the longest of the capital’s ancient aqueducts, running some 56.8 miles from source to city. Only about 6.2 miles stood above ground.

I had always assumed that Rome’s aqueducts were a kind of aerial plumbing, their water channeled atop arches. But the Marcia, like all classical aqueducts, ran largely underground. The water moved by the force of gravity, and arches and bridges, which were expensive and vulnerable to attack, were only used to span ravines, valleys and other dips in the terrain that would have interrupted the flow.

The arcade of the Marcia is now dry, but the same water still feeds mountain springs east of the capital. And though it now travels through a modern network of tunnels and tubes, the water is still referred to by its ancient name and is still considered Rome’s best drinking water.

One of the series of arches that rose before me once carried this current to Rome. But which one?

In the Park of the Aqueducts

The roughly 600-acre Park of the Aqueducts has few signs, maps or directions. Romans come here to jog and walk their dogs. The few tourists wander through a bucolic landscape — green, tranquil, its imposing ruins seemingly untouched by modernity — that has appeared in such iconic Italian films as “La Dolce Vita” and “La Grande Bellezza.”

Michele Alfonsi, a lawyer who heads up Pons Iani , a volunteer group devoted to aqueducts, offered to guide me. “See that?” he asked, pointing to a stone passageway atop massive arches. “That’s the specus of the Aqua Marcia.”

Specus is the Latin term for a roofed channel built at a slight downward slope so that water would run through it without gushing or puddling. This one was nearly high enough to stand up inside.

We clambered up the keystone of the arch, now just a few feet above ground level. When it was completed during the heyday of the Republic, the Marcia was the first aqueduct to bring water to the Capitoline, Rome’s most sacred hill. A small fountain there has been chiseled with the words “Acqua Marcia,” but like modern Rome’s taps, it now spouts a mixture of water from five different founts.

To sample pure Marcia water, I’d need to travel to the source.

‘Where’s the water?’

Sextus Julius Frontinus, the first-century commissioner of the aqueducts, wrote that the fount of the Marcia is near the 36th milestone of the ancient Roman road Via Valeria (roughly 35 miles east of Rome). But I had been warned that the original trenches had been obliterated in 1870 when the Marcia’s long-defunct classical aqueduct was reincarnated as the Acqua Pia Antica Marcia.

“You’ll get close,” said Peter J. Aicher, author of “Guide to the Aqueducts of Ancient Rome,” “by searching for Centro Casetta Rossa Idrico on Google Maps.”

I found the “casetta,” a small red stucco house used by the modern aqueduct’s maintenance personnel, at the edge of a green field. Aside from the inscription “Acqua Pia Antica Marcia 1870” carved over the front door, and the shed-like structures built above springs alongside the road, there was no indication that Rome’s best drinking water originated here.

I took in the rounded hills, hazy blue in the distance, and the Italian cypresses striping their shadows across a little-traveled, two-lane highway. “Where’s the water?” I asked a maintenance man. He pointed down: The underground springs that Quintus Marcius Rex first channeled over 2,000 years ago still bubble beneath this bucolic spot. The only way to plumb Marcia’s depths was to go spelunking.

Which is how, a few days later, I found myself clinging to an exposed tree root on the side of a ravine dropping to the Aniene River east of Rome. “Put your right foot there,” Alfonso Diaz Boj coaxed. “Two more steps and we’ll be at the Marcia’s specus.”

Mr. Diaz Boj, a guide with Sotterranei di Roma , which offers tours of Rome’s underground treasures, was leading a jaunt into the ancient, now-dry aqueduct channels buried near the town of Vicovaro, about eight miles west of the Marcia’s source. Twelve of us met at the Convent of San Cosimato, whose property contains the ruins, to suit up in hard hats and headlamps.

Once we had negotiated the hand- and toeholds and were hunched into the shoulder-high specus, Mr. Diaz Boj pointed to a lozenge of light slanting down from a shaft: “Teams of workers excavated these shafts every 15 meters. When they reached the proper depth, two teams dug toward each other laterally until they joined up.”

We passed bats clinging to the walls, and quills attested to the presence of porcupines. Over the centuries, the Marcia’s water had deposited multicolored bubbles and stripes of calcium on the concrete that Romans used to seal the specus. Mr. Diaz Boj pointed to graffiti scratched into the concrete — mysterious crosses, doodles and the possibly faked signature of Thomas Ashby, the British archaeologist and author of the 1935 “Aqueducts of Ancient Rome.”

After a lunch of lasagna, saltimbocca alla Romana and roast potatoes at the convent, I had a drink from a spigot in the garden. Only later did I learn that Vicovaro is inside the zone that receives the Marcia’s water unadulterated. It was delicious and refreshing, though I can’t say I detected much difference from the mixed water of central Rome.

The Marcia surfaces on arches and bridges several times between Vicovaro and the Park of the Aqueducts, most spectacularly at Ponte Lupo, about 10 miles south of Tivoli. This colossal bridge spanning a deep gorge has been in the hands of the Barberini family since 1633, when Pope Urban VIII acquired the surrounding estate. Guided tours (reserve by email, [email protected] ) are offered occasionally and during the festivals held here in the summer. Fortunately for me, a friend in Rome had arranged a private visit.

Ponte Lupo’s present owner, the actor and activist Prince Urbano Barberini, was waiting for us at the unpaved access road. A trim, handsome man in his early 60s, the prince recounted the site’s recent vicissitudes as he led us down a sloping meadow. When he regained title to the property after a long legal battle, the field and stream around the bridge had been buried in rubbish and frequented by sex workers.

I had seen images of Ponte Lupo, but nothing prepared me for its size and complexity. The original tuff arches carried the Marcia across a steep ravine. Subsequent retaining walls and buttresses have transformed the bridge into a palimpsest of building styles.

“It’s a difficult scramble,” the prince said, gazing up to the precipitous, densely vegetated summit above a dry creek. “Would you like to try?”

I eyed the rugged, tangled sides of the ravine. “Maybe not.”

“Good,” the prince replied, smiling. And we strolled back to the highway.

‘Engineering on a monumental scale’

The Marcia entered Rome on arches at Porta Maggiore , chosen as the entry point for eight ancient aqueducts because of its high elevation on Esquiline Hill. At first glance this busy crossroads near the Termini rail station struck me as rough and forlorn, but I gave it a closer look. Aqueduct arches converge or radiate from every direction. The Marcia’s specus is slotted above a chunky pier built of a volcanic stone called tuff that abuts the gate.

If you tune out the traffic, there is no better place to savor what one historian calls the Roman “knack for practical engineering on a monumental scale.”

It takes about half an hour on foot to trace the Marcia’s path through ancient Rome. From Porta Maggiore, the aqueduct tracked the Aurelian Wall as far as the elegant Augustan arch called Porta Tiburtina. From there, it veered off to follow today’s Via Marsala before emptying into a distribution basin now buried beneath the train station.

The Fountain of the Naiads

After the Marcia was reborn as the Marcia Pia in 1870, the Fountain of the Naiads was conjured up to showcase its purity in the Piazza della Repubblica, a 10-minute walk from Termini station.

Some of Baroque Rome’s most cherished monuments are display fountains, or mostre, celebrating the newly restored aqueducts that once again brought spring water to Rome. The Trevi Fountain is the mostra of the Acqua Vergine, the only aqueduct that has run continuously since antiquity.

But the Fountain of the Naiads is different. Unlike the gravity-fed aqueducts of pre-modern times, the Marcia flowed under pressure created by mechanical pumps, which allowed the fountain’s jets to shoot nearly seven feet high.

Katherine Rinne, the author of the forthcoming “Walking Rome’s Waters,” calls this “the Hugh Hefner fountain” because of its cavorting naked nymphs. It rises in the middle of a busy major intersection. “If you are brave enough to face six lanes of horrendous traffic,” Ms. Rinne said, “you can dangle your feet in it on a hot day.”

Just don’t drink it. Today, the naiads frolic in water that is periodically drained for cleaning and maintenance.

If you are inspired to sip from the source, do as the Romans do and cup a hand under one of the nasoni (big noses) that spout from goose-necked spigots all over town. Two thousand years after Pliny lauded the Marcia as a gift from the gods, Rome’s aqueducts are still lavishing cold, clear spring water on the Eternal City.
