Rainy days are rare, and the temperatures are just right for exploring this captivating corner of the world.

What Are Qatar’s Low and High Seasons?

Qatar’s high season (peak season).

Qatar’s high season runs from November to March, when temperatures range between 23°C and 30°C (73°F to 85°F) during the day and 15°C to 20°C (58°F to 68°F) at night. Qatar reaches its peak temperature in July when the only way to describe the temperature is hot, hot, hot! Average highs hover around 42°C (108°F), sometimes rising to a sizzling 50°C (122°F)! If you’re visiting Qatar during the summer months, don’t forget to check both the actual temperature and the heat index. That’s because the increased humidity can make August feel even hotter !

Is Qatar the hottest country in the world? Definitely not. While the hottest temperature ever recorded in Qatar was a blistering 50.4°C (122.7°F) in July 2010, that’s not the highest ever recorded temperature in the world. That record goes to Death Valley, California which registered an astonishing 130°F (54.4°C) in July 2021.

Does it ever rain in Qatar?

The perhaps surprising answer is yes – it does rain in Qatar. The country receives an average precipitation of about 80 mm (3.1 inches) per year, with most of the rain falling in the cooler winter months.

Since rain is not a common occurrence in Qatar, it can take you by surprise. It’s probably not worth packing your umbrella “just in case”, but if it does rain, head indoors and ride it out. Downpours are usually short but it’s best to stay inside with a coffee or tea and relax until the rain calms down.

Is Qatar very humid?

Qatar is generally a dry country, with low humidity levels throughout the year. January and December are the months with the highest relative humidity, reaching up to 71%, while the driest month is June, with only 41% humidity. Even during the country’s most humid periods, the humidity levels are still relatively low compared to many other “warm” countries. If you’re not from a desert climate, chances are you’ve never even heard of dust storms. They’re no joke, though! Qatar, including Doha, does experience dust storms. These usually take place during the summer months when strong winds blow over the arid desert landscape, picking up dust and sand particles and causing low visibility.

During a dust storm, take precautions such as staying indoors or wearing a mask to avoid inhaling the dust, staying updated on weather reports, and avoiding driving.

Get ready to dive into the crystal-clear waters of Qatar! The sea temperature in this coastal paradise varies throughout the year, but for the warmest sea temperatures, head to Qatar between June and September. During these summer months, the sea temperature averages a very warm 30°C (86°F).

The winter months from December to February are a different story, with sea temperatures dropping to around 20°C (68°F). Thanks to Qatar’s warm temperatures, swimming in the sea in Qatar is possible year-round (although it’ll be particularly cold in the winter), but it’s most enjoyable (and refreshing!) during the warmer months.

When is Ramadan in Qatar and how does it affect tourists?

I’m a year into my second stretch of calling Doha home. So I’ve learned a thing or two about living in the desert state of Qatar .

When I first lived here 20 years ago, nobody had even heard of this remarkable little country. Today, cruise ships hug the shoreline, and visitors flock here from around the globe. Yet some travelers arrive unprepared.

Knowing some background information before your visit will help you make the most of your trip to this country on the Arabian Peninsula . Timing your visit to Qatar is crucial

Qatar’s “season” runs from October to May. These months are the best time to visit , when most events and exhibitions take place and when the temperatures are pleasant enough to walk around outside.

Qatar is a desert country, and it gets hot. Like, really hot. Summer temperatures easily reach 50ºC (122ºF) – in the shade. While you can expect everything from your rental car to the malls and even some bus stops to be air conditioned, you might still get uncomfortable bouncing between them. 

Decide to travel – or not – during Ramadan

The ninth month of the lunar Islamic calendar, the holy month of Ramadan is when Muslims fast between sunrise and sunset. During Ramadan, it is frowned upon to eat, drink, smoke or even chew gum in public during daylight hours. While Qataris are tolerant of non-Muslim visitors, almost all restaurants are closed during the day (hotels offer the few exceptions). Visiting Qatar during Ramadan means your travel plans have to be more flexible, but you’ll get the chance to experience festivities such as the daily sunset cannon being set off, the pretty lantern decorations around town and the nightly iftar, the breaking of the fast after sunset that’s a joyous event in private homes and restaurants.

Take care to dress appropriately

Qatar is a Muslim country, and while Qataris are tolerant – especially of visitors – it’s a sign of respect to dress modestly. It’s not a problem to wear a bikini at hotel beaches and pools, but it’s respectful for men and women to cover their shoulders and wear clothes that reach to the knee when walking around elsewhere, especially in areas where you will encounter many locals, such as in Souq Waqif .

Hop on the Doha Metro

While much of Doha’s center around Souq Waqif and Msheireb is walkable in the cooler months, the easiest and most comfortable way to get around is on the Doha Metro . This modern, clean and expansive system takes you to all the busy hubs within Doha and its surroundings, including the airport and the towns of Al Wakrah and Lusail.

Understand the local etiquette

Don’t let preconceptions scare you away

Even before they visit, many travelers have an opinion about Qatar – but it’s essential to arrive with an open mind and experience it for yourself. While rules, customs and laws might differ from where you live, Qatar has been changing a lot in recent years. When I returned to live in Qatar again after a 15-year absence, I barely recognized the place. A rise in international visitors has spurred the country to continue to work toward more changes.

Solo female traveler visiting Qatar? No worries

Many consider Qatar the safest country in the world – and as a woman living here, I have never felt threatened. (Of course, it takes only one bad experience to change your view on that, but the same holds for every country in the world.) In Qatar, I usually forget to lock my front door and my car, and even leave my handbag in my shopping cart. You should use common sense as you would anywhere – and expect to feel safe and welcome. 

Try the favorite local breakfast

Since Qatar is one of the world’s richest countries, celebrity-chef restaurants abound throughout the capital. Yet travelers visiting Qatar on a budget can still find delicious low-cost meals, such as the local favorite breakfast of karak and chapati. A tea made with condensed milk, cardamon, ginger, saffron and sugar, karak is spicy as well as sweet, while chapati is a flatbread served usually with honey or cheese (or both!). You can try these two staples in most simple-looking cafeterias, at food stalls in parks or in Katara village. You’ll know where to find them by the hungry locals queuing up to order.

The falcon is Qatar’s national bird, and they are so revered that they are allowed on flights and even get their own seat. Doha has a falcon hospital as well as a falcon market ; on your visit, stop at Souq Waqif to have a closer look at these gorgeous birds. While you’re there, don’t miss the camels and thoroughbred Arabian horses that are stabled right in the city center. 

Qatar is an art hub of the Middle East

Qatar is more than luxury shopping and such prestigious sports events as the 2022 FIFA World Cup: it’s quickly becoming a heavyweight on the Middle Eastern art scene, too. In Hamad International Airport alone, you can see more than a dozen installations by such internationally famous artists as KAWS, Urs Fischer and Jean-Michel Othoneil. Head into the desert at Zekreet to see the stunning East–West / West–East by Richard Serra, or visit the enormous Miraculous Journey by Damien Hirst. Doha’s Museum of Islamic Art is world-class, while pockets of street art complement the capital’s high-culture offerings. 

Relax in a park

Most of Qatar’s landscapes are beige and sandy – so take a break from the desert hues at a green park in Doha. My favorite is MIA Park behind the Museum of Islamic Art, which bends around a bay and is full of small food trucks that sell karak , chapati and other goodies. MIA Park not only has fabulous mature trees and grass perfect for picnicking, but also offers superb views across the skyline, with picturesque wooden dhows (traditional boats) moored nearby. 

Don’t miss out on the desert

It is easy to keep busy in Doha, yet you can’t leave Qatar without experiencing the desert . As you off-road over sand dunes in a 4WD vehicle to, watch flamingos, camp under the clear skies of the “inland sea” of Khor Al Adaid and slide down the horseshoe-shaped Singing Dunes, you’ll discover how the desert lies at the literal heart of Qatar – and the figurative one of its people.

Bedouin have long lived around the Arabian deserts, but the culture’s nomadic lifestyle means that most places in this region don’t have any ancient structures. Yet Qatar has few historic surprises, such as the petroglyphs at Al Jassasiya and the Unesco-listed Al Zubarah Fort , both well worth a visit.

Plan where to have a drink

It’s possible to stave off the heat with a cool beer in Qatar – but you’ll need to plan ahead. You cannot import alcohol into Qatar from duty-free shops or buy anything but non-alcoholic beer from the grocery store, nor are you allowed to drink alcohol in public places. Alcohol is available in Qatar only on licensed premises, such as larger hotels and hotel restaurants. Most hotels have superb bars, comfortable beer gardens or outdoor restaurants where you can sit back with a glass or two.

The best time to visit Doha is between October and the end of April, when temperatures are at their most comfortable, the humidity is down and the sun is enjoyable. Doha is never swamped with tourists, but if you are looking for the time when there's the most space by the pool, and you can withstand temperatures of 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46.1 degrees Celsius) in the shade, then opt for July and August, when most locals and expatriate workers tend to leave for cooler climes, leaving the hotels and pools empty. Hotels rates do not vary that much, but are slightly cheaper during the hot summer months.

Doha’s dry, subtropical desert climate can be a challenge between May and end of September, with scorching temperatures and a humidity level that leaves you feeling as if you have been slapped with a hot, wet towel as soon as you set foot outside—and if you wear glasses, leave you sightless for some time, while trying to get rid of the condensation on the lenses.

Even in the cooler winter months, the temperature rarely goes below 57 degrees Fahrenheit (13.8 degrees Celsius) , and while the handful of rainy days fall mostly in those months, the maximum rainfall is four inches per year. That said, those four inches sometimes fall in one big downpour and can leave the city unnavigable for a day or two.

Between October and end of April though, the weather is perfect. Sunshine every day, low humidity and temperatures a still warm 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit (15.5-21 degrees Celsius), with some highs in the 90s Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius).

When traveling to a Muslim country, you must be aware of the Holy Month of Ramadan, as the experience of the country will change dramatically during that month. The timings of Ramadan are calculated by the lunar calendar and the sighting of the moon, and the dates change by around 11 days every year. For example, in 2019 Ramadan was between May 5th and June 4th, and in 2018, it was observed between May 16th and June 14th. 

During the month of Ramadan, no eating and drinking is allowed between sunrise and sunset, meaning that even for non-Muslim visitors, chances to eat and drink are dramatically reduced, as most restaurants and cafes are closed during the day. Most hotels have a secluded area where guests can eat, but having a snack and a cocktail by the pool would not be happening.

But, Ramadan is also a time of joy and celebrations. Every evening, at sunset, families gather holding a date and cup of water to break their fast with the firing of the Ramadan cannon. Then there is Iftar, the breaking-the-fast meal, where families and friends gather, celebrate and enjoy their meal. Every hotel puts on special Iftar meals, often in elaborate tents in the gardens.

During Ramadan the daily routines change, with, for example, shopping malls opening after Iftar at night, and staying open until 2 or 3 a.m. You’ll find tennis lessons occurring in the middle of the night, and people milling around and walking the Corniche throughout the night.

So, if you are interested in experiencing this very important month in every Muslim’s life, then maybe time your visit to slightly overlap, so you can observe the occasion in part.

Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha

The other two important dates on the Muslim calendar are the two Eids — Eid meaning feast or festival. Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast, is celebrated straight after Ramadan and lasts around three days. People sacrifice an animal, usually a sheep or goat, and you will see many people driving around with a goat in the back of the car. Families cook like crazy for friends and family, and it is a huge celebration with all the favorite foods, presents for the children and joyous get-togethers. 

Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, takes place around two months after Eid- al-Fitr and is the time when most Muslims, those that are able to or have not been before, go for the Haj Pilgrimage to Mecca. During both Eids, shops are often closed and that can cause some disappointment if you are not aware.

Weekends in Doha are Friday and Saturday, Sunday is the beginning of the week, with everybody returning to work. During the weekend, you’ll find that the hotel pools are overrun with locals and resident expatriate families, as most hotels double as a Leisure Club, meaning people buy memberships to use the pools, beaches and fitness areas with their families, and tend to spend all weekend by the water with their kids. So, if you want peace and quiet by the pool, maybe leave it until mid-week, if it is not school holidays, and explore the country on the weekend.

Doha holds many sporting events, and it is quite safe to assume that these will take place between October and April to catch the milder temperatures. Do check the local listings for events before you book, as many world class athletes flock to Qatar to play in off-season events.

The FIFA World Cup will be taking place in Doha in 2022, and held in air-conditioned stadiums around the city. Instead of in the summer months through, this championship is for once going to be shifted to the cooler month, again to make it easier on the players and all the visitors.

It is very rare in Qatar to get much advance warning on events, and since the country’s regular festivals are celebrated according to the lunar calendar the dates change every year, but here is a rough overview of what to expect. For confirmation, though, it is better to check closer to the time.

The highest average temperature is around 65 degrees Fahrenheit (18 degrees Celsius ) with around a max of 0.5 inches of rain. While people tend to enjoy the cooler temperatures, beaches and pools are deserted.

January also usually sees the Shopping Festival throughout the malls, with big discounts being offered, events for kids held in the malls, and raffles taking place.

It is still, relatively cool, and people tend to flock to sports events such as Golf championships and the Qatar Tennis Open.

Temperatures are perfect for all things outdoors, even the pools are beginning to looks good again. Sporting events usually taking place in March include the Qatar Masters (Golf), MotoGP Grand Prix of Qatar, tennis matches and gymnastics meets.

It is getting warmer and the pools and beaches are definitely calling. Depending on the year, Ramadan could start mid-to late April.

It’s starting to get warm, with temperatures reaching the 80s Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius). Depending on the month, Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr could take place in May.

The temperatures are in the 100s, reaching 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius ). Sporting events have pretty much ceased and schools are breaking up for the summer, so for a while, before everybody leaves, the hotel pools are going to be busy.

It’s hot and humid, and the city is deserted. Temperatures are up to 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Celsius), humidity reaches 90 percent and higher. Eid al-Adha is likely to take place during July depending on the year.

It’s even hotter than July, stay indoors in the air-conditioning.

It's still hot, but humidity is lowering a little. Families return to the city and schools are open again.

The weather is lovely. Sporting events are starting up again.

Perfect weather to sit outside in the sun. Plenty of exhibitions and sporting events to enjoy.

Locals think it’s freezing, anybody else thinks it’s nice walking around with maybe a thin jacket. Plenty of events are happening this month, and, despite it being a Muslim country, Christmas decorations are going up everywhere.

The best time to visit Doha is between October and the end of April, when desert temperatures are at their most comfortable, the humidity is down, and outside activities are enjoyable.

Doha, Qatar is becoming increasingly popular, both as a tourist destination and an ex-pat enclave. However, this Gulf city has a reputation for being extremely expensive, with its modern infrastructure and luxury amenities.

Doha is located on the peninsula of Qatar, which sticks out into the water of the Persian Gulf. The Gulf's average surface temperature hovers around 90 degrees F (32 degrees C), never giving the landmass a chance to cool off.

Qatar sits in the heart of the Arabian Gulf (Persian Gulf). A small peninsula, it’s connected by land to Saudi Arabia and in close proximity to the Tropic of Cancer.

Qatar experiences a desert climate with sunshine almost year-round, and the occasional dust storm thrown in. So when is the best time to visit the city of Doha and the tiny nation of Qatar?

How hot does Qatar get in the summer?

Visitors should expect long, hot summers followed by mild winters. There are no 4 seasons in Qatar, just summer and winter (also known as hot and really hot!). But does that mean you can only visit Qatar during the cooler winter months?

Certainly, the cooler months from late October through to April are the most pleasant for visiting Qatar. However, increasingly, there are more attractions open year-round, and Doha has its lights on year-round, 24/7, thanks in no small part to being the hub for the international airline Qatar Airways.

In this post, we will talk you through what to expect throughout the year, both in terms of climate in Qatar, as well as local holidays and events to be aware of.

Peak summer temperatures in Qatar can average 45°C (113°F), so it’s a case of life moving indoors during those hottest months; outdoor activities during the peak of the day in Qatar are all but unbearable. 

You will find a lot of the expat population use this time to leave the country, and everything really slows down across the city.

That said, it’s also your best opportunity to snap up a bargain-priced resort or short getaway.  DOH airport still runs at its busiest, with Qatar Airways ferrying passengers across the globe over summer. You will still find plenty of things going on in Qatar that make it worth a stopover in Doha , even in summer.

You will find there is quite a dry heat at the start of summer, changing to ultra-humid and sticky as August and September roll on. There is sudden relief come mid-October and temperatures will drop.

Note that sea temperatures in Qatar are very warm as well in summer. You can expect Gulf water temperatures as high as 34°C (93°F) so don’t go planning a refreshing ocean dip mid-summer (and check your hotel has a temperature-controlled pool!)

Qatar, in the cooler winter months (broadly November to April), can be a beautiful place to be. Without a doubt, this is the best time to visit Doha and all that Qatar has to offer.

Doha makes for an ideal mid-winter escape over the Christmas break, and is still quite pleasant during school term breaks too; the end of October autumn half term for many schools in Europe and the Spring Break in later March are the perfect times to plan a visit.

Daytime temperatures in Qatar really start to fall back to the low 30’s by the end of October, and to around the mid-20s by December/January.  These pleasant conditions last until around the end of April; by the end of May things really heat up again to 40°C+.

Be careful when planning anything to do with the resorts or beaches through mid-winter; you may find the water is a little on the chilly side (though coming from the coldest parts of Europe, it will probably feel tropical!!)

Winter is the perfect time to head out to some of the more remote parts of Qatar, including the inland sea, or north to visit some of the historic points, such as Al-Zubarah Fort.

The springtime also sees the Qatar International Food Festival (QIFF) – and in 2024, this is taking place as part of the EXPO 2023 exhibition in Al Bidda Park.

If you love a bit of sunshine and warmth thrown in, our favourite months to visit Qatar are November and March.

Yes! It might take you by surprise, but rain is possible over the cooler winter months in Doha, Qatar (or it could stay completely dry!) We wouldn’t recommend packing your umbrella just in case – but do expect sheer pandamonium if it does as buildings are put to the water-tight test; roads become easily flooded and most drivers don’t know how to react. Best to stay in place if a rainstorm does hit, it will soon pass.

Very much so.  These occur largely in the spring to summer period but can occur at any time of year. Qatar can be susceptible to the Shamal – a northwesterly wind that blows over Iraq and the Persian Gulf states. Those with respiratory conditions such as asthma should keep abreast of the AQI if it’s dusty out.

Real outside snow? No. The coldest it’s ever gotten in Qatar is 5.6°C.

Qatar hits its peak temperatures for the year in July, though August can often feel hotter due to the rising humidity later in summer. Expect July average high temperatures of 42 ° C (108 ° F), but highs as much as 50 ° C (122 ° F) are not unheard of. Keep your eye on the “feels like” temperature or heat index, as well as the temperature in Celcius/Fahrenheit.

Public and school holidays in Qatar

Although the country follows the Gregorian calendar (January through December), the Hijri calendar is observed for religious occasions.

The main observances are:

• The holy month of Ramadan
• Eid al-Fitr
• Arafat Day & Eid al-Adha
• Hijri New Year
• Mawlid al-Nabi al-Sharif – the Prophet’s birthday

These dates move forward on the Gregorian calendar approximately 10 days each year.

Actual dates are not confirmed until the moon is sighted, and the Government may move the actual dates that the public holiday is observed, normally to align with a weekend.

Qatar also celebrates:

• New Year’s Day on 1 January
• National Sports Day on 13 February
• Qatar National Day on 18 December

School holidays are set by the Supreme Education Council and the Ministry of Education. Most schools run on a three-term calendar.  They will have a winter term, and take a few weeks off over mid-December to January (coincidentally Christmas, it is not formally marked).

Term 2 then runs through until late March. There is a spring break in early April (again, it’s only a coincidence if it’s at Easter), then a longer summer break over July and August.

Also, note that the weekend in Qatar is Friday/Saturday, making these days much busier than during the week, Sunday through Thursday.

It’s important to note as a visitor when the  Holy Month of Ramadan  will occur as there are slight modifications in behaviour required. The 9th month in the Hijri calendar is a period of deep religious reflection for Muslims and is strictly observed.

Ramadan in 2024 will start approximately 11 March and end 9 April.

The most important thing to observe is fasting, with no eating or drinking permitted in public.  There should also be no public displays of affection, and  ensure you are dressed modestly  – more so than usual.

The other thing you may observe is that businesses and attractions are closed during the day and only open in the evening. That said, most tourist attractions are now keeping normal operating hours during the holy month. It is more so local businesses, government offices and schools that are impacted by the change in hours.

There is no reason not to visit Qatar during Ramadan . It can be a great time to enjoy the local culture, join in with a traditional Iftar (the evening breaking of the fast) and overnight festivities that last well into the night, especially on weekends. But please note the change in hours and dress code. 

It is still a more conservative place than Dubai, for example, so expect hotels to have covered dining areas and no alcohol to be served during Ramadan.

All subject to moon sighting for the actual start and end dates, you can expect Ramadan to fall:

• 2025 – March 1 to March 31
• 2026 – February 18 to March 29

What is the best time to visit Doha?

December-February is the best time to visit Doha, Qatar. The winter months have an average temperature ranging from 26.8°C to 21.1°C. Weather in these months are pleasant and is easier to roam outdoors. It is said to be the peak-season in Doha. Although rainfall is deficient, it rains for a day or two in a month.  March-May, the spring months in Doha is very warm, and the same is with the summer months of June-August. The temperature ranges between 108°F (42.2°C) and 80.3°F (26.8°C). The expenses for accommodation is much cheaper during these months. The fall months of September-November is, again, warm, with a temperature range of 105.7°F (40.9°C) and 79.4°F (26.3°C). Rain is also not frequent during this time, and hence, there’s no respite from the sudden heat waves. So, to get the best out of your travel to Doha, make sure you book your stay anytime during the winter months of December-February.

What to Do with 48 Hours in Doha on a Stopover in Qatar

When we found ourselves with a stopover in Qatar en route to Thailand, there was no question of whether or not we’d use that as an excuse to explore a new country. I’ve seen very little of the Middle East, and my husband had never been period, so 48 hours in Doha seemed a great way to introduce him to a region so rife in culture—and our flight on Qatar Airways made it a breeze to tack on a few days.

Why go to Qatar?

Qatar is a fascinating melding of contrasts: an opulent country populated by humble people, a nation of extravagant art and architecture that is still affordable to visit. Doha is the capital city of Qatar and its commercial center, but that doesn’t make it a destination devoid of character. Rather, we were shocked how instantly in love we fell with the Pearl of the Persian Gulf—and immediately wish we’d had a couple extra days there to see even more.

Qatar is the fourth wealthiest nation in the world, something you might quickly figure out back on the glass skyscrapers and abundance of sculptural art, yet it wasn’t expensive to visit, not by any means. Qatari people speak Arabic, but many know English or at least enough to help you out in a cab or at a restaurant, especially with as big of a tourism hub as Qatar has become.

After all, it hosted the 2022 World Cup, and we happened to arrive right in the middle of Doha hosting the AFC Asia Cup, which brought tens of thousands of football fans to Qatar during the same time we were on the ground.

If you find yourselves flying Qatar Airways as we did en route to Thailand, it’s very possible you’ll also have a stopover in Qatar, and the airline allows you to do so over multiple days if you choose. We did so for just the price of airline taxes: We used 140,000 American Express Membership Rewards points to transfer to Avios and fly business class from Atlanta to Qatar, then spent three nights in Doha and continued on in QSuites from Doha to Bangkok. If you’re going to Dubai or any of the Emirates, you may also want to tack on 48 hours in Doha as this region is very small and easy to explore with limited time.

How long do you need in Doha?

Well, that entirely depends on what you want to see and how many days you can allot to a stopover. We planned three nights in Doha based on flight times, and after accounting for jetlag, that gave us roughly 48 hours in Doha; we easily could have doubled that and plan to return on our next stopover to see more. I recommend at least four days in Doha if you can spare it; however, if two days is all you can do, you’ll still get a great first taste at a very interesting country.

If you only have the afternoon, though, you can book a private tour of Doha and see the highlights. The airport is so close to the city center that if you have six hours or more, it’s worth hiring a guide to show you the sites.

Where to stay in Doha

Doha has every luxury hotel you could want: a Fairmont , Raffles , Kempinski , Ritz Carlton , Four Seasons , the W , the St. Regis , the list goes on and on. We visited the restaurants at several, and I honestly don’t think you can go wrong. However, if you’re an art lover like we are, I cannot more highly recommend the Mondrian Doha , which checked all the boxes of a great hotel: impeccable design, central locale, large comfortable rooms, A+ service, and a great selection of on-site bars and restaurants.

I always have decision paralysis when it comes to where we sleep, and I waffled back and forth for a bit on the best hotel in Doha for us. In the end, I chose the Mondrian Doha because it was the right price point and also in a great central location for seeing everything we wanted to see. Before you decide where to stay in Qatar, you’ll want to take into account location and what you plan to see. These are three main areas in Doha where the majority of hotels are located:

A manmade island in the center of Doha, the Pearl is populated by luxury high-rises, both residential and hotels, as well as plenty of commercial development. It’s pretty central to the rest of Doha and has pretty much everything you could need: beaches, restaurants, cafes, shops, you name it, the Pearl has it. It’s also a bit secluded, so if you want to see more of Doha, you might want to stay in West Bay (below) or near Katara Beach instead.

West Bay is perhaps  the  main district in Doha; it’s got all the skyscrapers, the modern buildings, the hustle and bustle of the city. If you want to feel like you’re in an urban environment, you can stay in the heart of West Bay. If you want a more beachfront-type of hotel, stay between West Bay and Katara at the St. Regis or Intercontinental .

Downtown Doha

Downtown Doha is worth a wander and houses some of Qatar’s best museums, but I personally wouldn’t stay here as you’ll likely be spending most of your time up in West Bay or between downtown and West Bay along the Corniche.

How to spend 48 hours in Doha

Once you’re situated in Qatar, here’s a breakdown of how I would plan 48 hours in Doha—or three nights, two full days—on your stopover.

Day 1 in Doha

To start your understanding of the local culture, it’s worth heading downtown and immediately visiting the National Museum of Qatar , one of the most Instagrammable spots in Doha. This multi-level fever dream of a museum implements audiovisuals to tell the story of Qatar from its natural history to its Bedouin culture. It’s by far one of the most impressive museums I’ve ever experienced, and the layout is cool, as well: You start at the top, and it continues to slope downward until you’re back on the ground floor.

If you’re just in Doha for a day or have limited time, you may want to hire a private guide who can maximize each experience and help you skip the lines at the trio of local museums if there are any.

After we sped through the museum in record time—we did so in an hour, but you would seriously need half a day to see it all in detail—we went up to the fourth floor for lunch at Jiwan , an Alain Ducasse restaurant with a contemporary Qatari menu and some of the best views of Doha.

That afternoon, we planned to visit Souq Waqif, which is open all day except for a break in mid-afternoon, and Fanar Mosque, but instead we hopped on scooters and explored much of the Doha Corniche. If scootering isn’t your thing, you can also take a dhow and see Doha from the waterfront aboard one of the traditional boats of the area. The dhow cruises are also the most popular way to see the sunset in Qatar each evening.

As the sun started to dip, we saw a commotion over in front of the Amiri Diwan palace of Qatar, so we scooted closer. Turns out it was a camel demonstration, and we paused to watch, then followed as they were led by to their stalls in Souq Waqif. Camel racing is a popular pastime in Qatar, and many of the admission options also include farm tours.

We had a few places on our to-eat list like Shawarma Station, but we were also in the mood for cocktails, and as alcohol is only allowed at hotels in Qatar, we found ourselves at the Ritz-Carlton, Doha’s B-Lounge for Asian-fusion and waterfront views.

Day 2 in Doha

On day two, you may want to take it a bit easier as jet lag is likely setting in. We had a leisurely morning at the hotel, then grabbed an Uber to West Bay where we had brunch at Twisted Olive, then walked around ogling the skyscrapers that housed such businesses as FIFA. If you love glass and architecture, you’ll be enraptured by the West Bay.

And if you’re into urban development, Msheireb Downtown Doha is a regeneration project spanning more than 100 buildings, many of them mixed-used concepts with hotels, restaurants and cafes galore, that is worth a visit. We drove through in an Uber and then continued onto Fire Station , which is billed as a creative arts hub with in-artist residencies and could  be in the future as it’s got a few murals and some galleries but it’s not quite there yet.

One place you must see, however, is Katara Cultural Village . Brimming with venues, shops, small businesses and live demonstrations, it was, hands down, my favorite part of Doha, and if you only have a day in Qatar, make this a priority.

In addition to public art—murals, sculptures, the whole nine yards—Katara is home to Katara Mosque, an upscale supermarket and an indoor mall, which was fancy-pants. While we were there, it was also playing host to a massive Arabian horse festival and competition.

In the afternoon, if you have the energy, you should book  a day trip to the Inland Desert . This is always a popular thing to do in Qatar, as it’s one of two places in the world where the desert meets the seas, the other being Namibia where we visited last year.

It’s also a draw for travelers who want to go dune racing, sandboarding , camel riding and more. Best of all? It’s just an hour outside of Doha.

On our second evening, we had to check out the Pearl, so we went to Marsa Malaz Kempinski , which would be a fabulous place to stay if you opt for that area of Doha. We had drinks at Toro Toro, then the best meal of our time in Qatar at Al Sufra, a Middle Eastern and Levant-inspired restaurant on the hotel’s grounds. I wanted a cocktail at the Secret Garden, but we ran out of daylight hours. Next visit!

Some frequently asked questions about Qatar

If you’re planning a stopover in Qatar, you may very well have many questions still, as I did. Here’s everything I was wondering prior to my visit, as well as what I learned while there.

Do I need to take out local currency?

You could take out a small stash of local currency, the Qatari Riyal (QAR), at the airport upon arrival should you shop locally at any artisan stands, but we didn’t go that route. Pretty much everywhere in Qatar takes credit cards, even the taxis (which also are outfitted with WiFi). We didn’t take out Riyal during our three days in Doha and didn’t need it.

That said, if you plan to visit local markets, you might want to get some small bills in the local currency. All the restaurants and shops use a credit card tap system, and it’s quick and seamless.

Do I tip in Qatar?

Like many countries outside of the United States, tips are not assumed, but a nice bonus for quality service. At restaurants, there is a line to add a tip if you choose, but it’s not expected. We had great service everywhere, so I usually opted to add 10 to 15 percent, but again, this is up to each diner’s discretion. For Uber, I typically added on 5 QAR ($1 USD) to 10 QAR ($2.50), depending on how long the ride was. I use the XE app on my phone to convert currency in real time, though Qatar conversions were fairly simple at roughly 4 QAR to $1.

How do I get around Doha?

Doha is incredibly easy to get around, as you have taxis, a metro and plenty of ride-share services to choose from. When we landed at Hammad International Airport, we immediately logged on the airport WiFi and tried to call an Uber, but there were none available. (We’d later find we arrived in the middle of a huge soccer tournament, the Asian Cup, which was likely why.) Instead, we went into the airport taxi line, enclosed in a fancy glass vestibule, and took a Karwa—essentially Qatar’s go-to taxi service—to our hotel. The ride from Hammad International Airport to West Bay took around 30 minutes and cost us $12 USD.

The rest of the trip, we walked (plenty of wide, well-maintained sidewalks) or took Ubers everywhere. We found that almost every hotel, restaurant and public space had free WiFi, which made it easy to summon an Uber anytime we wanted one without needing to use data. There was always a driver within three minutes of where we were, and it cost us between $3 and $7 USD to get around town, very cheap.

There’s also the Doha Metro that we didn’t take, but several locals told us it’s extremely clean, modern, cheap and convenient. It’s well-connected to the airport, the soccer stadiums and all the main visitor areas.

What wasn’t cheap? Renting a scooter. We love exploring new cities by scooter, so when we saw no fewer than six scooter companies lined up along Al Corniche, we grabbed the ones we were familiar with: Bird. The city is extremely accessible by wide sidewalks, making it a perfect place for pedestrians and scooter riders like us. That said, we had total sticker shock when Bird charged us $100 (each!) for having the scooter for roughly an hour and a half. We’ve taken Bird in cities throughout the U.S. and paid roughly $20 an hour. Knowing that, in the future, I’d simply take Uber everywhere—or a dhow.

Is Doha safe?

Doha is incredibly safe. It felt like a relief as a woman to be in a place where no one was trying to catcall me or panhandle everywhere I went, which happens in many countries around the world but not in Qatar. Not once did I get a second glance from a man—even when I was walking alone with my husband out of sight—nor did anyone try to sell us anything ever. I cannot stress how safe Qatar felt. It’s a big international city whose tourism is one of its economic drivers, and I like that they are overly mindful to take care of their visitors.

Can you drink alcohol in Qatar?

Because Qatar is a Muslim country, alcohol is only available in licensed hotel restaurants and bars. You won’t see it anywhere on menus at local establishments, and it’s illegal to drink it in public or appear intoxicated. We had cocktails at several restaurant bars—at the Mondrian, the Kempinski, the Ritz Carlton—and liquor is subject to a “sin tax” but is pretty much standardized across the board. Expect to pay $20 per cocktail no matter where you go.

What do I wear in Qatar?

If you’ve never traveled to the Middle East, I understand that figuring out what to wear in a country like Qatar might stress you out. As an international tourist, you are not expected to wear what the locals do, which is usually long pants for men and clothing that covers the shoulders, knees and upper arms for women.

However, if you go inside a mosque, you’ll want to cover your shoulders and also your knees. We did not go in a mosque on this visit, but I did wear an ankle-length skirt and kept a shawl in my bag at all times just in case. The shawl doubled as a jacket at night, as it got a bit chilly during the night in January!

When is the best time to visit Qatar?

We visited Qatar in January and February, and our weather could not have been more ideal. It was a balmy mid-70s Fahrenheit during the day, perfect T-shirt weather, and dropped down to 68 F degrees at night when we needed light jackets. Winter is a great season to visit Qatar and be able to enjoy the vast outdoor seating at restaurants and bars across the city. The locals we met said come summer when it gets as high as 122 degrees Fahrenheit, you don’t want to be anywhere outdoors!

At the tip of the Zekreet Peninsula, just a short drive from the capital of Doha, you can find yourself in a nature reserve characterized by a coastline of sandstone cliffs. In Arabic, the name Brouq translates to ‘head,’ which in English would refer to the ‘Cape’ of a peninsula. 

As you might expect, the park is also home to its fair share of archaeological sites. In fact, you’ll find one of the most extensive Neolithic sites in the world here, where plenty of Ubaid pottery, tools, and chambered burial monuments have been excavated. 

Ras Brouq’s white cliffs are no doubt the most impressive geographic attraction in the park. Made from soft white limestone, these iconic rock formations sculpted by the erosion of centuries of wind offer a glimpse into what the area would have looked like millions of years ago. You can just imagine the nomadic tribes that might have made their way through the region.

While in the park, make sure you pay a visit to the East-West/West-East sculpture. It’s a magnificent structure commissioned by Sheikha al-Mayassa al-Thani of Qatar and designed by Richard Serra. It is made up of multiple steel plate sculptures that span over a kilometre to showcase the vast and desolate space of the desert.

As I’ve mentioned, Qatar is famous for its incredible architecture and modern building techniques in a harsh desert environment.

It might not be the most traditionally beautiful place in Qatar, but there is no denying the magnificence of the building housing the National Museum of Qatar. Built in 2019, the complex was built by a famous French architect to look like a desert rose. It was built around the centrepiece of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani’s original palace, his family home, and the seat of the Qatari government. 

The architect wanted to emphasize the important connection between the desert and the people of Qatar. After all, this landscape really has shaped the nation. He was inspired by the salt and mineral formations commonly found in the desert in the Gulf region, known here as a crystalized ‘desert rose.’ 

The building was built using steel truss discs and then clad with over 76 thousand reinforced concrete panels. It’s a magnificent structure to check out.

Seriously, you’re going to want to dedicate a day to this museum – stay in Doha for at least one night to check this and the other inner-city bits out.

The gallery spaces are designed to engage all the senses while telling stories of the Qatari nation. There is also a park, which includes playgrounds, artwork, and a garden for a breath of fresh air.

Located on the northwestern coastline of the Qatar Peninsula in the ancient town of Zubarah is Al Zubarah Fort. This place is actually Qatar’s largest archaeological heritage site. It’s known for being the best-preserved example of 18th to 19th-century trading and pearl farming in the Gulf Region. 

Centuries ago, the fort was founded and ruled by the Al Khalifa branch of the Utub tribe. Their plan was to build a thriving town with a safe harbour. Safe to say, their plan worked. The fort and port became one of the central pearl trading centres of the time.

Unfortunately, its prosperity drew negative attention, and after a few attacks, the town was burnt to the ground in 1811. Today, the remains include various mosques, madabis (date presses), a market, and the Al Zubarah Fort.

While many towns of similar heritage have been buried under moving sand dunes or modern metropoles, Al Zubarah stands tall and proud as one of the most unique places to visit in Qatar. No wonder it’s registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A simple stroll through the complex, marvelling at the one-meter-thick walls of traditional Arabian architecture and the central courtyard where soldiers would assemble, is enough to take you back to a time of armies and Arabian princesses.

I bet you didn’t think Qatar had its own version of the Maldives along its shoreline. Located just off the shoreline of the capital of Doha, Banana Island is Qatar’s answer to Dubai’s The World. However, instead of offering permanent housing in the city, the island is a resort dedicated to all things relaxation and thrill. 

Just twenty minutes from the mainland, Banana Island Resort Doha is an Anantara property that offers a taste of traditional Qatari hospitality in an incredible resort setting. It might not be the most affordable place to stay, but it certainly is one of the top ten places to visit in Qatar. Also, let’s be honest: this isn’t really the destination for a budget holiday in the first place. But if it really isn’t in the budget, there are options to purchase a day pass and enjoy the tropical sensory overload for a day. 

Spend a day on the lavish beachfront as the waves lap against the soft golden sand and enjoy a meal at one of the five-star restaurants dimly lit by lanterns as the sun sets below the horizon. Talk about paradise!

Welcome to the State Grand Mosque. Located in the Jubailat district of Doha, overlooking the city from a hill, it’s the biggest, most impressive, and easily the most beautiful mosque in the country. 

Also known as the Imam Abdul Wahhab Mosque, this exquisite religious complex is one of the best examples of modern Qatari architecture. Architects designed the building to blend tradition and modernity. It features aspects of ancient Arabic influence meeting modern simplicity and building techniques. 

Inside the mosque, there are three libraries, separate prayer halls for men and women, and special halls dedicated to the memorization of the Quran. All in all, a whopping thirty thousand worshippers can fit in the mosque at one time. 

It’s a beautiful structure to admire, whether you have any religious connection or not. Just make sure to dress conservatively, remove your shoes in prayer halls, and respect any worshippers during your visit.

Built from local sandstone, the mosque features a succession of arches and domes, coloured marble floors, and impressive corridors, all lit by dim, warm lamps when the sun goes down. Fun fact: there are exactly 93 domes in the mosque.

One of Qatar’s oldest and largest nature reserves, Al Thakira Mangrove Forest is one of the most exquisite natural landscapes in the country. It’s a huge contrast from the rest of the country, which is predominantly made up of baron deserts. So, it’s a real welcome to find a thriving forest of salty tree branches and skinny root systems. 

To make things more dramatic in this beautiful place in Qatar, the forest is just a short drive from the industrial sector of Al Khor.

Considering the harsh environment characteristic of the region, the diversity of mangroves, flora, and fauna is still pretty limited compared with other parts of the world. That said, this particular forest is known for the Avicennia Marina. This is a white or greyish mangrove species native to the Persian Gulf area.

The ecosystem includes underground roots covered by salt and seaweed, known as pencil roots. They work a bit like a snorkel and attract a bunch of interesting birds, including herons and even flamingoes. 

The best way to explore the mangroves and appreciate the flora and fauna is by kayak. There are a few tours that operate around sunrise, including all the equipment, safety training, and guides you might need. Just make sure you don’t walk through the forests since stepping on pencil roots can completely destroy a tree’s root system!

Perched on the northeast coastline of Qatar in the al Ghariya municipality, Fuwairit Beach is one of the top ten best places to visit in Qatar . It is famous for its abundant turtle population, which lays eggs between April and July. These incredible creatures, which are as big an attraction as the azure blue water and soft sand, return to the beach for up to 30 years to lay their own eggs. 

As of February 2021, this popular tourist beach become a conservation area and sanctuary for turtles and birds. So it’s good to keep in mind that the beach is closed during breeding months.

The sandy bay dotted with rocks is just a couple of hours’ drive from Doha and offers all the normal beach activities you might expect. The water is calm and shallow, making it a great place for families to swim and kids to play around in the water. 

Sunrise and sunset are the most spectacular hours on the beach when the entire landscape is painted a hue of pastel watercolours. If you’re lucky, you could even spot dolphins making their way down the coastline. 

The beach has no washroom or restaurant facilities, so come prepared for a self-sustained beach day. Beach bats, balls, and volleyball nets are welcome! Just a few meters from the main beach, Jebel Fuwairit Beach is a quieter and arguably even more beautiful beach.

If you’re a fan of nature conservation and green spaces, you’re in for a real treat. One of the few naturally green areas in the desert country, Al Karaaka Lagoon is easily one of the most unique places to visit in Qatar. 

Unique why? Well, not only is it an oasis in a desert, but the origins of the lagoon are pretty wild, too. It’s just a short distance from Doha and was once home to ten separate lagoons that were used to receive industrial wastewater. Yuck! After years of this, the lagoon became contaminated and layered with a sludge of dirty soil that was harmful to the local wildlife. More yuck!

Fast forward ten years and an extensive restoration project, and the area contains three lagoons of clean, treated water, home to an abundance of wildlife and fish. It’s surrounded by a ring of healthy soil that fertilizes reeds and plants. Much better!

It might be artificial and come with a dirty background, but today, the lagoons are an oasis of birds, fish, local wildlife, and flora in the middle of the desert. It’s a hotspot for photographers and bird watchers in particular, but it is well worth a visit for anyone with a passion for nature rehabilitation.

There is no place more quintessentially Qatari than the desert. The undulating sand dunes that stretch seemingly neverending into the distance offer one of the most beautiful views in the Middle East. 

Not only are the dunes damn pretty to look at, but they’re also a hotspot for plenty of recreational activities. Of them, you can enjoy dune buggy tours for a spot of adrenaline, hike over the hot sand for a bit of exercise, or even sandboard down the steepest dunes. 

Joining a desert safari to Khor Al Adaid, which is only accessible by 4×4, is an experience not to be missed. Heck, you could even parasail in some areas.

One of the most magnificent ways to experience this vast desert landscape is to spend a night in and amongst it. The tradition of Bedouin tribes, who would move across the landscape following animal feed and water, is heavily embedded in Qatari culture today. There are plenty of Bedouin camps where you can spend time in the desert, ranging from ultra-luxurious camps to budget-friendly ones. Not only beautiful, but the experience of a lifetime!

I know I mentioned it above, but Khor Al Adaid is totally worth its own mention as one of the most beautiful places in Qatar . The beach is pretty much a lake in the middle of the desert. One glance at this beach, and you might think you’re in the tropics. Soft honey-coloured sand from the desert merges with turquoise blue water and is honestly one of the most tranquil and relaxing environments in the country.

Around the water, the dunes can reach incredible heights of up to 40 meters. The best way to experience these dizzying dunes is by 4×4, where you can literally roll and slide over the ever-changing hills.

Khor Al Adaid is a UNESCO Natural Reserve, regionally referred to simply as the ‘inland sea.’ It’s an incredible landscape formed by a unique geological process that creates a type of salt lake that experiences tide-like water level fluctuations. It’s a whole story, but it is certainly worth learning a bit about if geography interests you.

The entire area is uninhibited and wild, home only to the odd oryx, gazelle, flamingo, and waterfowl. Keep a keen eye out if wildlife spotting is your thing!

Porto Arabia is the beating heart of The Pearl Island. It’s a beautiful man-made neighbourhood with a mix of indoor and outdoor shopping centres, resorts, hotels, and upscale residential apartments. Why is it beautiful? Well, it’s designed to look like a Mediterranean village. Enough said!

This marketplace would top the list of just about every Qatari bucket list, and for good reason. The souq was once a trading place for Bedouin tribes, who would bring sheep, goats, and wool to sell. Today, the market is an intricate network of streets and alleyways with traditional mud-rendered shops and exposed wooden beams amongst beautifully restored Qatari buildings.

One of the most beautiful places in Qatar to spend with friends, Mia Park is a family-friendly outdoor park that hosts plenty of year-round activities, from movie screenings to sports events to markets. As you sit on the well-kept lawns, you’ll be able to admire wonderful views of the waterfront and the impressive Museum of Islamic Art.

Part of a 19th-century defensive system to protect the region, the Barzan Towers are two beautiful examples of Qatari architecture. The watch towers may even have been built near the sea to watch over pearl divers and keep an eye on any approaching ships. 

They were originally built using coral rock and limestone, with a wooden draining system characteristic of the local architecture.

I know, I know, another building. But truth be told, Qatar’s buildings are one of the country’s most beautiful assets. The Museum of Islamic Art is located on an artificial island in the Persian Gulf and is exquisitely designed and influenced by traditional Islamic architecture – clean lines and geometric patterns.

Just off the coast of Doha, the uninhabited island of Al Safliya is a natural paradise with pretty much nothing but beautiful nature to enjoy. Walk the length of the sandy beach, swim, paddle board, jet ski, or lounge around as the turquoise gulf water laps against the sand. It’s also an epic place to view the skyline of Doha.

If it’s tranquillity that you seek, Al Wakrah Beach is the place to be. This beach and cafe-lined promenade offers some of the most picturesque coastal views in the country. It’s a beautiful place in Qatar for families, couples, and friends.

Built to showcase Qatar’s cultural significance, the Katara Cultural Village is a manmade attraction that is just as beautiful as it is educational. Sure, you can learn about local art, theatre, literature, and music, but how about you admire the exquisite architecture and intricate mosaic work?

Venice fans, this one is for you. Built as a replica of the Venetian canals, Qanat Quartier on Pearl Island is where Italy meets Arabia. Hop on a water taxi and cruise through the canals, admiring the Italian-inspired buildings and bridges.

A natural landmark of the Rawdat Rasid area, this cave structure is just a short drive from Doha. The natural cavernous structure was formed as long as 500 thousand years ago and is packed with fibrous gypsum crystals that hang overhead. It’s the largest and deepest cave in the country, not to mention one of the most unique places to visit in Qatar.

White limestone cliffs descend into crystal clear water at the Ras Abrouq Rock Formations. Wind and erosion have created this stunning and unusual landscape, made famous for its mushroom-shaped hills and caverns.

It’s surprisingly smooth sailing getting around Qatar. Getting around Doha (the capital city) is super easy using the metro system. Doha Metro connects key spots in the city and costs less than $1 for a single trip. Convenient and budget-friendly – just our luck!

Across the country, the primary way to get from A to B is by car, and since roads are new and well-maintained, this is a breeze. Taxis are more expensive, costing around $5 to $10 for a short trip within Doha and more for longer trips. 

Renting a car is your best bet for venturing beyond city limits. Car rental prices range from $20 for a compact vehicle to $40 for a luxury SUV.

Alternatively, why not splurge and book an all-inclusive tour where transport is included? While it might not be the most adventurous or affordable option, it’s no doubt the safest and most convenient.

There’s no doubt about it: Qatar’s beauty hinges on its unique juxtaposition between history and modernity. With ultra-modern skyscrapers nestled between ancient souqs, set against a backdrop of an ever-changing desert landscape, this dynamic country is a whirlwind of beauty and innovation.

1. Souq Waqif

First and foremost, you absolutely need to add Souq Waqif to your list. It is not only one of the best places to visit in Doha, but it is also where I recommend basing yourself during your visit.

⫸ The Souq Waqif Boutique Hotel will set you up in the middle of all the action. You will be within walking distance of all of Souq Waqif’s bustling stalls and shops, and have easy access tot he Metro. The hotel itself has luxe, well-designed rooms, fast free wifi, a swimming pool, and super helpful staff. I can’t recommend it enough! BOOK YOUR STAY HERE!

Souq Waqif is one of the most iconic places in Doha, known for its lively atmosphere and bustling energy. Many shops stay open until 11pm, so it is even alive and awake into the night.

The souq’s architecture is a rebuild after a fire destroyed part of the original souq on the same spot. Wander through the narrow alleyways and busy streets full of spice shops, souvenir stalls, tasty cafes, and authentic restaurants.

This trading site is where Bedouin’s used to meet in ancient times. And today, it’s still one of the most exciting things to see in Doha!

2. Pigeon Towers

The Pigeon Towers are stunning sand-colored columns found within the Katara Cultural Village.

These ancient structures, which were used for centuries to house pigeons, are a perfect example of Islamic architectural ingenuity. They were used by farmers to rise pigeons in order to collect their droppings for fertilizer, or for meat and eggs.

I couldn’t wait to see them strictly for their architectural beauty. I recommend visiting at sunrise or sunset for the best golden hour glow.

3. Katara Mosque

The stunningly detailed tiles of the Katara Mosque are reason enough to head to Katara Cultural Village . It is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Doha and frankly, one of the most beautiful mosques in the country.

Located directly next to the Pigeon Towers, this mosque was built in 2011. With its large blue dome, towering minarets and spacious interior, the Katara Mosque is a popular tourist attraction and a place for locals to come together for prayer.

Pro Tip: When visiting mosques in Doha, be sure to wear a  loose flowy kimono  to cover your shoulders, waist, and midriff. Keep a  sheer lightweight scarf  on hand for extra coverage (you’ll need to cover your head to enter mosques.)

4. Gold Mosque

Tucked away in Katara’s maze of buildings is another mosque made of shimmering gold tiles. As the sun rises higher in the sky, the mosque seems to glow brighter and brighter!

Smaller than the Katara Mosque, this site is no less stunning. It is hands down one of the best places to see in Doha.

5. Katara Amphitheatre

One of the highlights of Katara Village, the large amphitheatre is worth a visit. Even when no events are scheduled, visitors are welcome to stroll through the entrance and see the large open air theatre

The design is a blend of Islamic and classical Greek architecture all rolled into one, with the capacity to seat 5,000 people.

Built in 2008, the ampitheatre is centrally located in Katara Village. It hosts many of Doha’s world-class performances.

Hours: 24 / 7 / 365 except for ticketed shows.

Fees: Free unless attending a performance.

6. Katara Cultural Village Cafes

One of the best aspects of visiting Katara Cultural Village is the plethora of tasty and trendy cafes on site.

Visit the popular ChacLate Cafe, where you can get fresh juice, Turkish Coffee, and treats like honeycake. Or, stop by my personal favorite breakfast spot, Chapati & Karak, where you can get cardamom spiced karak tea and chapati wraps with cheese or eggs or sweets.

7. Katara Beach

If you love sand and sun, then you need to see the Arabian Sea while in Doha. Katara Beach is a quick and easy stroll from Katara Cultural Village, so it’s the perfect choice!

This stunning stretch of sand is perfect for relaxing with a book, swimming the bright blue waters, or just soaking up the sun on the warm, golden sand. This beach is the only public beach in Doha.

There are separate areas for men only, women only, and family visitors. And, you have plenty of water sports and rentals to choose from.

Katara Beach is a must-visit for anyone who is a mermaid at heart. Visit year round, but in the summer months, start early!

8. Museum of Islamic Art

The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is housed in a stunning cube-like geometric design right on the water. The architect I. M. Pei specified that the museum must be built on an artificial peninsula near the traditional dhow harbor.

Inside, MIA is even more incredible. It holds Islamic art from across three continents, including old manuscripts, intricate metalwork, colorful textiles, and much more.

The artifacts date from the 7th century through the 20th century, and this is one of the most complete collections of Islamic artifacts in the world. You can’t miss it!

9. Islamic Cultural Center

Across from Souq Waqif, you will likely notice a spiral shaped building towering up into the sky. This is the Sheikh Abdulla Bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Centre, or, Fanar.

Fanar was once the largest mosque in Qatar. And while it still functions as a place for prayer, this building also hosts religious and educational activities, even for visitors.

Tourists can learn about the Qatari lifestyle and history as well as try local coffee. Etiquette and courses on the Islamic faith are also available. But hands down, my top recommendation is to visit during Friday prayers.

100% of the mosques I have visited, even the heavily touristic  Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque  in Abu Dhabi, are strictly closed to visitors during prayer times. And understandably so.

Here, even non-Muslim visitors can attend Friday prayers led in English to learn about this deep and moving tradition.

Hours: Visit. 7.30am – 10pm. The welcome desk is open 7.30am – 1.30pm and 4pm – 10pm.

Fees: Dependent upon which activities you choose.

10. National Museum of Qatar

One of the can’t-miss things to do in Doha is a visit to the National Museum of Qatar. The museum offers an immersive experience that takes visitors through the history of the region, from prehistoric times to the present day.

With interactive exhibits, stunning artwork, and informative displays, there is something for everyone at this world-class museum.

The architecture of the building itself is impressive, resembling a desert rose that blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Whether you are a history buff or just like to learn, a visit to the national Museum of Qatar will not disappoint.

11. Falcon Souq

The Falcon Souq is technically part of Souq Waqif, but it is set apart into an area of its own.

Get a fascinating look into an important part of Qatari culture and heritage here. As one of the most popular places to visit in Doha, the souq is home to a variety of different types of falcons, including the highly prized Peregrine Falcon.

The birds are highly revered in Qatar, as well as in other Gulf countries. The Falcon Souq is a place where locals can not only purchase falcons but also buy food and visit the pet hospital. Tourists can learn more about the history of falconry here, too.

Hours: 7am – 1pm; 5pm – 9:30pm daily.

12. State Grand Mosque

The State Grand Mosque in Doha is an icon of Qatar’s Islamic culture. The mosque is known for its beautiful architecture, elegant mosaics, intricate carvings, and magnificent chandeliers.

As one of the most visited places in Doha, it’s an excellent stop if you want to learn more about Islamic culture and religion. When visiting the mosque, it’s essential to dress modestly (check my Qatar packing list for details) and remove your shoes before entering

Allow ample time to wander through the mosque and enjoy its tranquil surroundings. The State Grand Mosque in Doha is undoubtedly a must-see attraction and not to be missed!

Hours: Saturday – Thursday: 9am and 7pm; Friday: 2pm until 7pm.

13. The Persian Gulf from a Dhow Boat

The first time I saw the Arabian Sea, I was shocked at how blue the waters were. I had always pictured the orange desert dunes when thinking of the Middle East, and it just hadn’t occurred to me that the water would be so pretty.

One of the best ways to see the water is from a traditional dhow boat . See the Doha skyline from the water after a tour of the souks, mosques, and sites of the city.

14. Al Koot Fort

If you’re on the way to the Falcon Souq, make sure to stop by the tall white Al Koot Fort, just a short walk away. Originally a police station and later a jail, it was rebuilt in the 1920s as a fort by Sheikh Abdullah Bin Jassim Al Thani.

Although the museum isn’t currently open, it’s definitely worth a quick visit while you’re in the area.

Hours: 24 / 7/ 365; note that the museum is currently closed.

15. Arab Postal Stamp Museum

If you’re interested in Arab culture and history, you should definitely add the Arab Postal Stamp Museum to your list of places to visit. Located in the heart of Doha, at the Katara Cultural Village, the museum showcases an impressive collection of stamps from various Arab countries.

The stamps depict a wide array of themes, from historical figures to natural wonders in the Arab world. One of the highlights of the museum is the section dedicated to Qatar’s postal history, which gives visitors a glimpse into the country’s development over the years.

Check out the interactive exhibits and browse the museum shop, where you can purchase unique souvenirs and postcards featuring some of the stamps on display.

Hours: Sunday – Thursday: 9am and 7pm; Friday: 3:30pm until 9pm; Saturday: 9am-12pm and 5pm – 8pm.

16. The Pearl Qatar

The Pearl Qatar in Doha is a man-made island and one of the most luxurious areas of the city. Attention shoppers out there – this is a spot you will likely enjoy!

The Pearl has everything from a luxurious shopping experience, to world-class dining options, to breathtaking views of the Persian Gulf. Visitors will find plenty of high-end boutiques, ranging from internationally recognized brands to local designers.

The Pearl also has a range of restaurants and cafes that serve delicious international dishes, so save room for lunch or dinner.

Pro Tip: There is free parking available at the entrance of the island, making it easy to explore on foot. If you would rather visit as part of a tour, check out this guided tour option .

17. Doha Corniche

Doha’s Corniche is a picturesque waterfront promenade with stunning views of the city skyline and the Arabian Gulf. It stretches for seven kilometers and offers visitors plenty of opportunities to indulge in leisurely walks, bike rides, and picnics with family and friends.

Enjoy the scenic views, take in the local culture, and escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The best time to visit the Corniche is in the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are milder, and the crowds are less dense. It is a beautiful place to get a bit of exercise on your trip.

18. The Pearl Monument

While walking the Corniche, keep your eyes peeled for The Pearl – a large monument honoring Doha’s history as a pearl farming nation.

The large monument features a shimmering pearl inside an oyster. Visitors can stroll through the nearby park or take a boat ride along the nearby canal to admire the monument from afar.

My top tip for visiting the Pearl Monument is to go during sunset when the surrounding sky paints a beautiful backdrop against the gleaming exterior.

19. Aspire Park

Aspire Park is a must-see attraction when visiting Doha – and it is a far cry from what you’d expect to see in a desert nation. The lush green park, located in the heart of the city, is an oasis of tranquility and relaxation.

Aspire Park is renowned for its fountains, lakes, jogging tracks, and green grass. Aspire Park is also home to the famous Torch Doha Hotel, which offers breathtaking views of the park from its exclusive restaurant on the 47th floor.

When visiting, feel free to bring a picnic blanket and some food if the temperature is right, as there are plenty of picnic spots to enjoy throughout the park.

20. Khalifa International Stadium

Sports fans in Doha should make it a point to stop and visit the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar. It is the tallest freestanding structure in the country and can accommodate up to 50,000 people!

This modern stadium was built for the 2006 Asian Games and has now hosted numerous international sporting events, including the IAAF World Athletics Championship and the AFC Asian Cup.

If you’re planning on visiting Doha and are interested in sports or architecture, the Khalifa International Stadium is a must-see.

21. Mall Of Qatar

Similar to Dubai , though somewhat less extravagant, Doha has plenty of luxury shopping opportunities. The Mall of Qatar is a state-of-the-art shopping with over 500 stores.

Expect high-end designer brands, department stores, and popular fashion retailers. In addition to shopping, the mall also offers a variety of entertainment options such as a theme park, indoor skating rink, and movie theatre.

Though I am not a big shopper myself, I have to admit that this is a great escape from the heat if you visit Qatar in the summer.

Hours: Sunday – Wednesday: 10am – 10pm; Thursday – Friday: 10am – 12am; Saturday: 10am – 11pm. (Restaurants are closed for Friday prayers from 11:30am – 1pm.)

22. Le Pouce Sculpture

When you’re walking is Souq Waqif, you are more than likely to come across the giant gold thumb sculpture called Le Pouce . Created by the famous French sculptor César Baldaccini, this masterpiece towers over visitors.

It is definitely worth a quick stop as you stroll the souq!

23. Souq Waqif Art Center

Tucked down the same walkable street as Le Pouce is the Souq Waqif Art Center. It is a fun spot to visit and is especially vibrant at night, due to the bright and colorful lanterns found here.

Inside, you can stroll the gallery with rotating exhibitions to see what is on view. Or, watch painters creating masterpieces in real time. Pop into each small room to see what treasures you can find.

Hours: Saturday – Thursday: 8am – 2pm and 4pm – 10pm. Friday: 4pm – 10pm.

24. Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art

Another of the art-filled places to visit in Doha is the Arab Museum of Modern Art.

Located in the Education City, the museum houses an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art from the Arab world and beyond. From paintings and sculptures to installations and multimedia installations, the exhibits provide a thought-provoking cultural experience.

Pro Tip: The museum also offers guided tours and art workshops for anyone looking to enhance their experience.

Hours: Saturday – Thursday: 9am – 7pm; Fridays: 1.30pm – 7pm.

25. Qatar National Library

The Qatar National Library in Doha was designed by renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, and holds over one million books, as well as a state-of-the-art children’s library, too.

This Library preserves heritage texts holding historical significance to Arab-Islamic Civilization and gives free access to Qatari citizens.

Operating hours are 8am-8pm. For a more in-depth and educational experience, consider attending a lecture or taking a tour. Trust us, it’s worth it!

Pro Tip: The Qatar national Library is around a 15 minutes drive from the Souq Waqif area. Visitors can take an Uber or a taxi – just make sure to read my taxi safety tips first!

26. Barzan Towers

The Barzan Towers are undoubtedly one of the most intriguing places to visit in Doha. These watchtowers date back to the 19th century and were used to protect the city from invasion and alert the nearby army.

Their unique architecture and historical significance make them offer a glimpse into the region’s past. The towers offer stunning views of the surrounding area and make for an excellent photo opportunity, so don’t forget your camera .

27. Omani Market

The Omani Market is exactly what you’d expect it to be – a market where traditional Omani style items are sold. This includes jewelry, textiles, pottery, antiques, and spices.

The market is located in the heart of the city, near other popular places to visit in Doha, such as the Museum of Islamic Art and Souq Waqif.

To make the most of your visit, come prepared to bargain for prices and take your time exploring all the different stalls.

Hours: 7am -8pm.

28. MIA Park

The MIA Park is a large, stunning coastal green space located close to the Museum of Islamic Art.

Enjoy the multiple art installations, the playground, and the great views of the Doha skyline.

Pro Tip: MIA Park is open 24 hours each day. Plan to arrive either in the early morning or close to sunset to avoid the intense midday heat. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen , a wide brim hat , and plenty of water!

29. Doha Festival City

Doha Festival City is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in luxury shopping and entertainment. This indoor mall is the largest in Qatar and holds more than 500 international and local brands.

Aside from shopping, there is a world-class indoor theme park here, an Angry Birds World, and a variety of dining options to choose from.

Hours: Sunday – Wednesday: 10am – 10pm. Thursday – Saturday: 10am – 11pm.

Fees: Varies depending on what activities you choose.

30. Villaggio Mall

The Villagio Mall is another of the best places in Doha for shoppers. It has over 200 stores to choose from, plenty of cafes and restaurants, and beautiful architecture to boot.

When visiting the mall, be sure to keep an eye out for the Gondolania Theme Park, complete with an indoor canal and gondola rides.

Pro Tip: The mall has a dress code. Females, be sure to wear your flowy kimono or long maxi skirt here. Shoulders and knees should be covered!

31. 974 Beach

Since Doha overlooks the Persian Gulf, it should be no surprise that there are some excellent beaches here. 974 is one of the best.

This beach is one of the most picturesque locations in the city. It’s the perfect place to soak up the sun, take a stroll or a dip, or get active. Try your hand at beach volleyball, kayaking, or paddleboarding.

For me, the most interesting thing about 974 Beach is the presence of a colorful, towering art installation by Ugo Rondinone. Creator of the famous Seven Magic Mountains , Rondinone created a similar installation for Doha here.

Don’t miss these tall colorful rocks if you are a fan of the Las Vegas artwork! This was one of my favorite places to visit in Doha particularly because of them!

Where Exactly Is Doha, Qatar?

Doha is the capital of Qatar. It is located on the east coast of the country and borders the Arabian Sea. It is directly west from  United Arab Emirates .

Where To Stay in Doha

I highly recommend staying in one of two main areas within Doha. My favorite is near Souq Waqif, and my second favorite is near Katara Cultural Village .

1. Souq Waqif Boutique Hotel

Souq Waqif Boutique Hotel  is my top pick for any first time visitor to Doha. You’ll be right in the center of the souk and within walking distance of many of the places to visit in Doha, listed above. This hotel is also within easy walking distance of the metro.

The hotel rooms here are clean, colorful, and comfortable. The staff was incredibly helpful during my stay, and the hotel has amenities like a pool, fast wifi, and meal options if you like.

2. Saraya Corniche

My second choice is the  Saraya Corniche , which offers easy access to the corniche waterfront as well as being walkable from the Souq Waqif area. The rooms are a bit less luxurious than my top choice, but this hotel does the trick.

Breakfast and dinner buffets feature Arabic and Indian food, and many rooms have great views of the Corniche or the Doha skyline. Check out the fitness center, pool, and restaurant / bar on site.

3. The 21 High Street Residence

For my beachgoers out there, the  21 High Street Residence  might just be for you.

Located on Katara Beach, this chic hotel is literally steps from the water. It has a fitness center, free private parking, room service, and more. Some units also have a balcony, so you can drink in that sunshine all day long.

Middle East latest: Iran and Israel could 'drag UK and US into another major Middle East conflict'

Israel's military has said it is "prepared to attack" as well as defend itself if Iran follows through on its threats. Meanwhile, a human rights organisation has said Israeli settlers stormed a village in the occupied West Bank, shooting and setting fire to houses.

An incident at sea northeast of the UAE's Fujairah city has been reported.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations said it took place 50 miles from the city and authorities were investigating.

News of the incident comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and Israel.

The commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guard's navy said on Tuesday that Israel's presence in the UAE was viewed as a threat by Tehran.

The commander said Iran could close the Strait of Hormuz - the entrance to the Gulf - if deemed necessary.

Fujairah is located on the eastern side of the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran-aligned Houthis have also staged attacks on shipping in the Red Sea region for months.

The UK and US are at risk of being dragged into another major conflict in the Middle East, an expert has said.

The war is escalating in multiple theatres, putting the region on "the brink of another all-out wider conflict", said Fawaz Gerges, professor of international relations at the London School of Economics.

Benjamin Netanyahu and his generals have been provoking Iran for several years and while the latter is "desperate" to avoid direct conflict with Israel or the US, it wants to re-establish effective deterrence, he said.

"This a manmade crisis. This is Benjamin Netanyahu's war cabinet decision to provoke Iran. To attack Iranian sovereignty, the Iranian consulate in Syria, and kill several top commanders."

Iran has blamed Israel for an attack on its embassy complex in Damascus - though Israel has not said it was responsible.

Professor Gerges said the Israeli war cabinet and IDF generals were "trying to force and provoke Iran to retaliate".

"The war itself is escalating into multiple theatres and basically risks dragging the US and Britain into another major conflict in the Middle East," said the professor.

He said that if Iran attacks Israel, Israel will retaliate against strategic targets in Iran itself, which will lead to another major Iranian attack.

"Iran wants to restore its deterrence because Israel has been provoking Iran, attacking Iran, doing sabotage in the past few years and Iran has not retaliated directly.

"We really are at the brink of another all-out wider conflict," he said.

"This is what we have been warning all along in the past six months and calling for a ceasefire."

The US is prepared to intercept any weapons launched at Israel by Iran, according to reports.

Iran has been moving military assets like drones and cruise missiles internally, two people familiar with US intelligence told CNN .

America believed Iranian proxies, like the Houthis and Hezbollah, could also be involved in the threatened attacks, the sources said.

Yesterday, Sky News learned from a defence official that the US was "moving additional assets" to the Middle East to bolster deterrence efforts.

The White House said yesterday it changed its force posture in the region after threats of an Iranian attack on Israel. 

A human rights groups says dozens of settlers stormed a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank, shooting and setting fire to cars and houses.

A Palestinian man was killed and 25 others wounded, said the Palestinian health ministry in the territory.

Settlers entered the village of al-Mughayyir in search of a missing 14-year-old Israeli boy, according to Israeli rights group Yesh Din.

The group posted videos showing smoke billowing from burning cars as gunshots rang out. 

The Palestine Red Crescent Society said eight of the injured were hit by live fire. 

Israel's military said it was looking into the reports. Sky News cannot independently verify them.

Tensions have flared in the West Bank since the war began in Gaza.

More than 460 Palestinians have been killed there by Israelis since 7 October, the Palestinian health ministry says,

Israel's military says it has prepared plans to respond to a possible Iranian attack.

The country is ready for a "wide variety of scenarios" that include both defensive and offensive actions, said army spokesperson Daniel Hagari.

The military has completed a situation assessment with the head of US Central Command, General Erik Kurilla, he added.

"Our defences are ready and know how to deal with every threat separately," said Mr Hagari.

"Next to defence, we are prepared to attack. We are ready to attack with a range of capabilities and we know how to act and protect the people of Israel."

His comments come as Israel braces for a possible Iranian attack, which Joe Biden warned could come "sooner rather than later".

Iran has threatened to retaliate after blaming Israel for an airstrike that killed two Iranian generals in the Syrian capital of Damascus last week.

Iran has a number of proxy groups in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Yemen that are all capable of striking Israel. 

Israeli leaders have threatened to strike Iran directly if it attacks.

Iran has vowed to launch a retaliatory attack after a deadly airstrike on its embassy in Syria last week, which has been widely blamed on Israel.

More details now on the news we brought you earlier about that US military moving assets in the Middle East. 

An American defence official told Sky News the move was being made to bolster regional deterrence efforts and increase protection of US forces in the region. 

Now, our US partner NBC News has reported most of the assets involved are already deployed in the area and just moving around. 

Officials said moves were being made to be better positioned for defence of Israel and US assets and in case the US needs to respond to whatever Iran does. 

The specific assets being moved in the region have not been identified. 

Germany has advised it citizens to leave Iran amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. 

The German foreign offices warned there was a risk of sudden escalation in Tehran's situation with Israel and also of arbitrary arrest in the country. 

"In the current tensions, especially between Israel and Iran, there is a risk of a sudden escalation," it wrote in a travel warning. 

"It cannot be excluded that air, land and sea transport routes could be affected." 

It said Germans were at "concrete risk" of being arrested, interrogated and being given long prison sentences. 

"Dual citizens with Iranian and German nationality are especially at risk," it added.
