Beach House (formed in 2004) is the American dream pop and ethereal indie-rock duo of Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally, hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.

French-born vocalist and organist Victoria Legrand and guitarist Alex Scally met amidst the buzz of Baltimore’s indie rock community in 2004. The pair soon formed Beach House and began crafting their combinations of drone-like organ sounds, electronic drums, tremolo-induced guitar, and soaring, dreamy vocals. Beach House issued their debut single “Apple Orchard” in August 2006, earning a feature from reputable music critic Pitchfork. The band’s self-titled full-length arrived in October that year, receiving critical acclaim from a host of sources and making a number of year-end best-of lists.

The duo’s sophomore album “Devotion”, issued by Carpark Records, was released in February 2008. Led by the single “Gila”, the album once again generated a stream of positive reviews, and charted at No. 195 on the Billboard 200. Following the release and subsequent worldwide tour, Beach House recorded a version of Queen’s “Play the Game” in aid of the Red Hot Organisation’s “Dark Was The Night” compilation. Legrand went on to provide backing vocals on fellow indie-rockers Grizzly Bear’s hit single “Two Weeks”, before contributing the song “Slow Life” to the “Twilight: New Moon” soundtrack.

Often dubbed as their breakthrough album, the band’s third full-length “Teen Dream” took the indie blogosphere by storm upon release. The record represents a sound honed in on, crafted, and long considered, melancholic melodies floating alongside half-speed percussion and clean guitars notes. Produced by the esteemed Chris Coady, the album exposed Beach House to a huge audience, aided by the singles “Zebra”, “Used to Be” and “Take Care”.

Ahead of their fourth studio album the duo released the single “Myth” on their new label Sub Pop Records in March 2012. A second single “Lazuli” followed in April, before the full-length “Bloom” was issued in May. The album debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200, a remarkable feat for an independent band, and was greeted with critical acclaim. Without divagating too far away from their ethereal sway, the record builds upon their earlier releases, adding weight and an experimental edge to their distinguished and polished sound.

Live reviews

Sometimes it’s nice to be on the receiving end of a surprise, to have your expectations confounded. I had gone along to Beach House at the Riviera expecting a pleasant, if somewhat melancholy, show. I’ve been a fan of their music for a few years now, and I put the albums on during all the contexts in which I listen to music: walking around town, in the metro, peeling the spuds, having dinner, at night on the sofa along with a few bevvies. And while the music is good and often excellent — an aural treat, mesmerising, otherworldly — and Victoria Legrand’s voice is wonderful and uniquely deep and smoky, at certain times and in certain doses it lacks the required energy, gusto and vim to truly grab hold of me. My big surprise last Sunday was that Beach House live are better than on record. The washed-out drear that sometimes leaves me cold when I listen to their records is replaced by a dynamism and aggression that for me lifts Beach House into the realm of the great live acts I’ve seen.

Last Sunday wasn’t just about Beach House being louder* than on record. Loud does not mean good. You can be loud and appalling — Donald Trump is proof of this. Beach House were loud, but they were also a whole panoply of stuff which, as an old goth and shoegazer, tickled me as pink as the sleeve of Loveless. They were brooding, they were menacing, they were aggressive, creepy, disturbing, distorted. When you read any review of Beach House or go to their entry on Wikipedia a you cannot escape the D-word: dream pop. But live, my friends, Beach House are anything but dreamy. “Enter Sandman” eat your heart out, because Beach House are taking over your nightmare.

Road House blues!

Beach House’s sound rests on three pillars (to co-opt that contemptible and ubiquitous business-speak term): Victoria Legrand’s voice; Alex Scally’s guitar; and Victoria Legrand’s keyboards. On Sunday last, all three were not just standing tall, but had grown in stature compared to the restricted dimensions afforded to them in the recording studio. Sometimes compared to Dusty Springfield, Victoria Legrand is the lucky owner of a voice that is both unmistakable and so amazing that the word “gift” is almost always invoked. The voice’s standard setting is low and husky, but it does do high and sweet. Victoria Legrand uses her voice masterfully: it has the clout to knock listeners over the head with its sheer power, like one of those wannabe divas on The X Factor whose winning strategy is to scream the house down, but she uses it as a painter would her brush, dotting splashes of colour and emotion where needed and wanted. Live, the voice is spine tingling. Unlike on record, she let loose a few times and nearly blew a path, Gandalf-like, through the crowd. As a keyboard play, she’s no dunce either. Most songs are driven by her chords and arpeggios. Her rhythmic style and the pads and synth sounds she uses put much of the dream (or otherwise) in Beach House’s pop. She proves that a frontwoman who stands behind a keyboard isn’t necessarily a yawn-factor. She somehow manages to combine being static with dramatic dynamism — her headbanging as she plays and gesturing with whatever hand happens to be free draws the interested eye every bit as much as a hyperactive, twerking Ke$ha/Mylie/Taylor.

Another reason why Beach House should never work live (at least visually) is that Alex Scally sits down for many of the songs. Every bit as anti-rock ‘n’ roll as having your lead singer stuck behind a keyboard, his sit-down style is as distinctive as his bandmate’s voice. He rarely strums or bashes out power chords, but picks out notes to intertwine with voice and keyboard. Many of the songs (“Myth” and “Zebra” for example) hang on Alex Scally’s hooks and melodies, which range from the deceptively simple to the baroque. His sound is somewhere in between Robin Guthrie and David Roback, less spacey than the Cocteaus but less blue than Mazzy Star. It is remarkable that more than three decades have passed since the post-punk explosion but someone like him can still pull a unique and recognisable combination of style of play and choice of effects out of the air — because it is true that he really does sound like no one else. On the night, just like his partner in chime (!), Alex Scally’s sound was more robust than on record. Songs were driven with more urgency and aggression and there was even something of the tormented guitar hero in the way he bashed and twisted and turned the neck of his instrument. As you would expect, there were no five-minute solos, but a degree of improvisation added plenty of new twists to some of the familiar songs.

I read somewhere that Victoria Legrand is a fan of David Lynch. Indeed, Beach House have a song (“Silver Soul”) for which the chorus goes “it is happening again” — a well known catchphrase from Twin Peaks. There is something distinctly lynchian about the atmosphere the band create in a live context. More than once I looked towards the stage and felt I was in the Road House watching the house band, or even in the Red Room hearing secrets I could never understand. It’s the weird sweetness of their sound, their 1950s structures with a nightmare twist that transports one to the Bookhouse or the Black Lodge. I can easily see them soundtracking the new Twin Peaks, if it ever appears.

From a distance!

The icing on the cake of a great concert was Victoria Legrand’s humour and warmth. In between songs she built up a rap about the cheesiness of the venue (it has a fake oasis as its central bar) and then got on to the serious topic of what happened in Paris the week before (she was born in France). She thanked us for venturing out to see the band with all that was going on. We cannot thank them enough for keeping the flag flying for challenging and arresting live music.

*Being a loud live act in Spain has the advantage of drowning out the chatter of those that come to a gig to catch up with their buddies and generally chew the fat.

Ever since 'Apple Orchard' way back in 2006 I have followed and revelled in the music of Beach House and watching them live just compounds what an amazing band they are.

This was my fourth time of seeing Victoria and Alex perform live, my first time at the Troxy and I was not disappointed, these guys deliver in spades and the ninety minute set is gone before you have time to catch your breath.

They covered a great back catalogue of tracks and obviously show-pieced many songs from their latest offering; 7.

Right from the opening of 'Leviathan' it was pretty apparent the Baltimore duo were on form and raring to give the audience what they had come for.

My only regret, purely personal, was they did not play the finely anthemic 'Irene' however, it did not detract from what was a real spectacle.

Having seen them perform before to muted monochrome sets or fairly simple lighting displays, the Troxy performance was backed by a stunning exhibition of light, colour, smoke, silhouettes and back-screen images.

A stunning amalgam of dazzling stage display and the finest dream-pop you'll ever hear delivered with utter professionalism and with just a dash of ad-lib which Beach House only serve to bring their audience even closer.

Never seen them live? Do yourself a favour and lose yourself in the presence and music of one of the best contemporary rock/pop/ambient bands around.

Oh, and by the way, their support band whose name I irritatingly missed but will endeavour to find out, were absolutely superb too, a really exciting drum and synth duo also from Baltimore who delivered a blistering set of high-octane electronica performed by two exceptionally accomplished musicians.

Thank you Beach House, 'til the next time, play on.

There are few bands that can match the surreal beauty of Beach House and seeing them live was something I had to do. I wanted to experience this dream pop duo as they were meant to be heard and not just how they were recorded on the album.

I went to see them at a smaller venue, holding only a couple hundred people. As soon as I arrived, there was a line to go in. Beach House was more popular then I thought. It took me a few minutes to get in, but I still had a good spot by the time the opening bands had played. When Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally took the stage the crowd went still. I don’t think anyone was sure what to expect. The recordings are so soft but strong, would the live performance be the same?

Just then the band started playing “Myth” one of their most popular songs. Everyone got into it. Most had their hands in the air, swaying, dancing, and feeling the music.

Victoria’s vocals were spot on the whole set, both moody and powerful. Alex was great as well playing a simple and overwhelming sound from his guitar. The show closed with the song “Zebra” a true crowd favorite. The song seemed to rock the crowd to sleep. Sadly, as it ended the band left the stage. I think we all could have listened to that set forever.

This was the first proper concert I'd ever been to, and it was spectacular. They really, really don't disappoint in their performance. Victoria is stunning and her voice is magic. The lights and everything were great too - props to their team.

When they started playing 'Walk in the Park', it made me so inexplicably happy I almost cried haha - and that was just their second song in! They played pretty much all the songs I was hoping they'd play: Levitation, Walk in the Park, 10 Mile Stereo, Silver Soul, Beyond Love, Space Song, All Your Yeahs, Elegy to the Void - god, they almost didn't play 'Sparks' and that would have left me so so disappointed.

Thankfully, they came on for an encore and that was their last song of the night. The performance felt way too short, and when Victoria came back on stage, she said something like "thank you for coming before we leave Melbourne forever". Ahhh forever?!

The only issue I had was with the crowd which seemed pretty dead (or at least the people around me), and they were more consumed with filming the performance than really getting into the music - which was unfortunate. The girl next to me was frigid and kept checking her phone like she couldn't wait for it to end.

Despite only forming in 2004, dream pop duo Beach House have already received great critical acclaim and are beginning to be recognised worldwide. Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, USA, the dreamy duo have been praised for their ethereal sound and indie rock talent. Hearing them perform live is a million times more magical than hearing them recorded: they are simply one of those bands that demand to be seen live, in their natural form. Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally are a beautiful pair: Victoria’s phenomenal vocals, beautiful and soft yet strong, harmonise perfectly with Alex’s skillful guitar strumming. They have great chemistry on stage and really are a wonder to watch. One of the nicest things about their gig was the intimate atmosphere, mostly created by the rather small venue, that really suited the band’s style and sound. The room captured their sounds without losing any to muffled echoes. The crowd swayed, clapped and waved their hands along to such hits like ‘Zebra’ and ‘Myth’ but in large part, remained silent so as not to disturb a single moment of the magic going on on stage.

This is the third time I see Beach House, and frankly, it will be the last if they don't reinvent their live act. The first two times were at festivals where they played late, and people where drunk and chatty, so I was hoping that a designated act on a Tuesday evening would present a different experience, but unfortunately it didn't. The show is quite stale, and certainly not fitting for a standing crowd. I think it could be an enjoyable experience if it was at a concert hall with seating and impeccable sound, but when the stage performance consists of light and not much else--as per usual the three band members barely moved, and seeing their silhouettes was about as personal as it got--and the rest of the setting is essentially a rock-'n'-roll gig, there's just something that doesn't add up. On a positive note a few of the songs did have an extra layer of dynamism in their live form--Space Song and Lazuli come to mind.

Overall, though, I was hoping that third time would be a charm, but I left disappointed.

Dream pop duo Beach House have achieved a universal critical acclaim and global notoriety in their short spanning career. Thanks to the near perfection of the first three studio albums and proficiently designed live show, fans sell out the group's fleeting appearances as soon as tickets are available.

They were offered the honour of headlining the Big Top stage at Latitude Festival 2013 which is a known celebration of all things indie and performed with a surreal expertise. The glowing colours, impactful synth and droning bass tones came together in a truly indescribable way as Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally carefully led their audience through a detailed and well thought out setlist. 'Bloom' has been there most successful release thus far so therefore a large majority of the setlist was comprised of these tracks including immaculate versions of 'New Year' and 'Wild' whilst older fans were rewarded for their dedication with an airing of 'Zebra' and 'Silver Soul'.

One of my favourite band to listen to whenever because they chase the anxiety so efficiently and never fails to put me on a rocketship, directly to space. You feel the same calmness as when the night has fallen and all is asleep and silent.

Their live show perfectly recreates that. The atmosphere you feel in their music is recreated with the darkness of the room and the really amazing light show they put on. Often, on my favourite songs, the show hold my emotions very tightly. It was very magical and ethereal. But i am this enthusiastic about this because their songs already please me so much. It's deffo a chill concert, that can transport you to another universe. And even though it was my first time at the back of the room, i still enjoyed it very v much. so glad i was them and really hope i can see them again live!

What a great concert! They're surely great musicians and I had great expectations for this one! They covered more musics from the last 2 albuns, mostly from Depression Cherry (Levitation, Beyond Love, Sparks, PPP) as expected but they also played musics from the previous (and not only the most popular ones). Heartbreaker, the first music that Alex and Vitoria composed together, Wishes and Walk in the Park were an example <3 They managed to create the appropriate atmosphere, dazing and introspective, and the stars from the Bloom album cover projected behind them were just magical. Finishing with Irene was the cherry on top of the cake for me. I'm eager to see them again as soon as I can and thankfull to my lucky stars for being there <3

This is the third city I've had the pleasure of seeing Beach House in. Outside beneath the stars or indoors, this band always has the power to penetrate your very being and make you feel all the regret or nostalgia that the singer, Victoria Legrand is trying to convey with her deep, echo-ed voice. Older tracks had me singing along, almost clutching my chest to hold in all the emotion and unknown tracks had me excited at the prospect of a new album. Although the rest of the band, Alex Scally included were on the quiet side, Legrand's brief interactions with the crowd in between songs kept the show light-hearted and feeling more intimate. Definitely a band I will see live, again and again.

Beach House On Touring, The Evolution Of ‘7’ & Not Knowing What’s On The Horizon

By Cyclone Wehner

The mysterious US indie-rock combo Beach House – centred on lead vocalist and keyboardist Victoria Legrand and guitarist Alex Scally – have established an impressive longevity. This year they unveiled their seventh album, 7 – otherworldly glam-rock.

Scally connected with the French-American Legrand in the music underground of Baltimore, Maryland, forming Beach House circa 2004. They released two albums before 2010’s breakthrough, Teen Dream , on Sub Pop. The band have been unusually consistent. In 2015, they issued two records, Depression Cherry and Thank Your Lucky Stars, within weeks. Last year, Beach House presented a compilation, B-Sides And Rarities , including their abstract cover of Queen’s ‘Play The Game’ for the Red Hot Organization . It signified a psychological clearing-out.

For Beach House, 7 is a regenerative project. They instituted key changes – most basically, transforming their rehearsal space into a home studio. Beach House had worked with producer Chris Coady since Teen Dream . But, this time, they sought Peter “Sonic Boom” Kember. The Brit maverick is best-known as a member of the ’80s band Spacemen 3, but he’s subsequently recorded with MGMT. Kember played facilitator and disrupter. Beach House utilised their tour drummer, James Barone, for sessions, too.

Beach House are routinely dubbed ‘dream-pop’, something they’re ambivalent about. However, with its heavier rhythms, rock guitar riffs and electronic layers, 7 feels more psychedelic, and more proggy, than their past albums. Though 7 has been positioned as a ‘political’ record, the pressers referencing US upheaval and #MeToo, Beach House avoid the obvious. 7 is as much about the dark side of an emblematic modern glamour and ironic juxtaposition.

Over the years, Beach House have attracted a cult following in R&B and hip-hop circles. The Weeknd sampled them twice on his House Of Balloons mixtape, while Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Money Trees’ borrows from ‘Silver Soul’. 7 ‘s lead single, ‘Lemon Glow’, could be an emo (-rap) banger.

Now, Beach House are “excited” to be touring Australia in early 2019. Previously, the duo have played major festivals here – last hitting 2016’s Laneway. This go, they’ll headline traditional venues. Mind, Beach House will also perform an outdoor show as part of the Perth Festival and join the countercultural Golden Plains. In the interim, the pair are still sharing new songs – only recently the driving 7 outtake ‘Alien’.

Beach House are infamously wary when it comes to the media – and music industry machinery. In some ways, they’re less mythic than post-mythic, eschewing any external narratives. In 2015 Scally explained to Rolling Stone , “We just have a very deep belief that we can’t just produce soundbite answers for people. We don’t want to wrap things up in a nice box, just for the sake of commodification.”

Today the multi-instrumentalist is gracious, if cautious, as he chats to Music Feeds – a cat (possibly) mewing in the background. Notably, Scally is especially gratified to be commended on their acoustics at Laneway. “Oh, that’s lucky,” he says. “We’ve been working with the same sound guy for 10 years, so I’ll tell him that and he’ll be pleased.”

Music Feeds: In May you returned with 7 – and you really shook things up for this album. How do you look back on it now and on what you achieved musically?

Alex Scally : You know, when we were working on the record, we felt excited about it. It felt fresh to us and we were really happy to do it and put it out. I haven’t listened to it properly since it came out. But Pete, Sonic Boom – who helped produce it – emailed us, texted me, the other day and said he listened to it and said that it felt good; like it had held up. Sometimes you listen to something a year after or something and it’s like, “Oh, boy…” So I don’t really know what to think about it. But I’m glad we went through it and got it out into the world.

MF: I know one of the things that you challenged yourselves with was not worrying about what could be reproduced live easily. Obviously, you’ve been performing material from this album on the road. How has that process been? How is it translating?

Alex Scally : It’s cool. One of my favourite things about touring a lot is the way songs continually change and evolve. It’s cool. You’re able to figure out ways to play most of the songs and get it cool and they have a different feel than the record – which is cool.

MF: A lot of people have stated that they felt 7 was a darker album. I think the darkness has always been in your music, actually. But I wondered what kind of headspace you and Victoria were in when you wrote this material?

Alex Scally : Yeah, I mean, there’s a lot of stuff happening on that record, in our opinion. Just a lot of different feelings. There’s irreverent things, there’s political things, there’s just your regular touring, just the emotional drain… You know, it happened over the course of a year. So you go through a lot of states in a year, right?

MF: To what extent do you discuss the lyrics, both of you? Are you a part of that or is it more Victoria’s domain?

Alex Scally : It’s really her domain, but I contribute them as well to some songs. We work on them sometimes together. Sometimes she’ll ask me, “What do you think about this versus that?” and I just give an impartial opinion. But sometimes we work on them just from like a kind of structural, almost rhythmic, place, or just [for] a sonic quality of the words. Yeah, I really like the way Victoria writes lyrics. So there’s really not much negativity in that discussion. It’s just mostly positive feedback and letting things happen.

MF: You’ve had this partnership for such a long time now. Has the dynamic changed over time – in the studio environment, even when performing?

Alex Scally : Well, it doesn’t really feel like it’s changed, but it must have, right? It’s like the way parents always feel like their children look the same but, as an uncle or something, you see them every three months and you’re always blown away that they’ve changed. So I think it’s like that maybe!

MF: As a band, you have the most incredible fanbase – even within the music scene. So many hip-hop artists are big Beach House fans. Tyler, The Creator has mentioned it since the word go. But how do you feel about the fact that you have this cross-appeal within the industry?

Alex Scally : Yeah, I guess I’m not truly aware of all that. But, I mean, whenever someone finds out that they’re appreciated – people would laugh if then they didn’t feel fortunate to feel that way. So, yeah, we’re happy that we do appeal to or interest anyone at all. So we’re grateful for that… I’m sorry I don’t really have much to say about it, except, “Cool!”

MF: You seem quite a self-contained unit, in a way. Are you open to collaborations? You must have been approached by some of these guys wanting to have ‘features’ or do collabs? Or do you prefer to work within your own sphere?

Alex Scally : I think we’re pretty in our own world. We’re down here in Baltimore… So, yeah, I think we’ve just been always too busy to do that kind of thing. We’ve always been so carried away in our own realm that that opportunity has not really come up in a substantial way.

MF: You have let people sample your tracks and they’ve been used in quite interesting ways. Did any of those songs pick up your ears?

Alex Scally : It’s always cool to hear how people do that, you know?

MF: Well, in 10 years’ time, if you want to be a super-producer, I think the door’s open!

Alex Scally : That’d be amazing, actually.

MF: Of course, you’ll probably be finishing your album tour cycle after this Australian run. Do you have any ideas about what you’d like to do next? What’s on the horizon?

Alex Scally : Yeah, we’ve never known what’s on the horizon. So it’s impossible to answer. There might be more music, there might not be more music, there might be some music in some other form, or maybe there will be some collaboration… We don’t really know. We really have no idea at this point. We’re just putting one foot in front of the other.

MF: You’re playing slightly different venues this time. In the past you’ve done big music festivals. But this time you’re playing venues and even arts-oriented festivals. Do you take a different approach to those?

Alex Scally : Well, we much prefer when it’s our own show, because we’ve been working on our live show for the last six months pretty intensely – you know, we’ve done 60 shows and we’ve been constantly writing it and rewriting it and refining it. So we’re happy that we’re gonna be in a lot of venues, because then we can really do our show and do it the way it’s meant to be done.

Beach house will appear at Perth Festival and Golden Plains Festival in 2019, as well as their own headline shows in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. More details here.

Beach House

Back in Sydney with their latest album and a whole lot of psychedelic pop

Joe Rivers

Time Out says

It’s now been over nine years since Beach House’s breakout album, Teen Dream , hit the shops. If it doesn’t seem like that long ago, it’s perhaps because Beach House’s music seems to defy conventional wisdom when it comes to time. Their kaleidoscopic, psychedelic pop melts minutes into hours, and hours into days, providing an intense wall of sound that seems far more than the work of just two people. Last year saw the release of the duo’s seventh studio album – the aptly-titled 7 – and they’re back in Sydney for the first time since a well-received Opera House show three years ago. Expect drones, reverb, chiming guitars and plenty of songs to remind you of both the goth movement of the 1980s and the early '90s shoegaze scene.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Photos of Pretty Beach House

Pretty Beach House, Central Coast

Pretty Beach House can sleep eight people at any one time, with four private pavilions, three freestanding and one penthouse. The pavilions have names that describe their best feature: Treetops, Bayview, Hideaway and The Retreat and each one has views of the angophoras, across a dramatic escarpment and down to the sparkling bay waters of Broken Bay.

Bayview is a one bedroom split-level pavilion boasting a luxurious king size bed and spacious indoor and outdoor living areas. The wood combustion fireplace, luxurious bathroom with shower and heated flooring, heated plunge pool and outdoor double day bed spoil the senses after a day of adventure.

Hideaway sits high at the tip of the property — this is the most secluded pavilion. It is similar in style but somewhat larger than Bayview, with a decadent double day bed and plunge pool. Add heated flooring, double shower and black slipper freestanding bath.

Treetops is set high up on top of the main residence — this pavilion is in the penthouse position. This luxurious one bedroom pavilion is complete with a king size bed and stunning views across the Bouddi escarpment over to the sparkling waters of the bay. The private balcony beckons relaxation, complete with double day bed, flowing sheer curtains and outdoor firepit. There is a large walk through robe and luxurious travertine bathroom and magnificent copper bath and heated flooring. This pavilion overlooks the deck area and the communal guest pool of the main house.

The Retreat is the largest of the pavilions — spread over two levels, it offers separate living space upstairs with a wood burning fireplace and powder room, whilst downstairs is a king size bedroom and luxury bathroom with bath, separate shower and heated flooring. Outside boasts a generous private deck with double day bed, overlooking the heated plunge pool.

The main house is a shared space for guests, which has been lovingly built with hand-made mud bricks, and huge hand-crafted recycled timber posts. The main house features the spectacular dining room, impressive bar with remarkable views and an open plan Italianate Ambach kitchen, encouraging guest and chef interaction. The hexagonal bar area is designed for conviviality and sharing fine foods and afternoon cocktails with the setting sun.

Rates include: all dining, open bar with premium wines, beers, spirits (cellar list additional), pavilion minibar, mountain bike hire and unlimited Wi-Fi.

A serene escape nestled within the heart of the New South Wales Bouddi National Park high above Pretty Beach, this stunning world-class hotel is an easy 90-minute drive or exhilarating 20-minute seaplane flight from Sydney.

Pretty Beach House is approximately one and a half hours north of Sydney and one and a half hours south of Newcastle, and just across the water from Sydney's Palm Beach. The Bouddi Peninsula is the southernmost tip of the central coast region and is an easy day trip to the Hunter Valley wine region.

Food and drink

Native bush foods, along with fresh produce straight from the kitchen garden, make up the seasonal menus prepared by the highly talented chefs at Pretty Beach House. As part of your stay, all dining and beverages are included (cellar list additional) along with pavilion minibar.

Breakfast is relaxed and casual and can be enjoyed alfresco. For lunch, think local crayfish with a garlic mayonnaise and antipasto with salami, pickled vegetables and eggplant caponata. In the warmer months, there is chilled soup such as tomato with saffron, asparagus or fresh peas. Picnic hampers may contain a delicious array of Italian style panini with house made breads, cakes and tarts. A much-loved treat at Pretty Beach House is Pizza alfresco, as the chef stokes up the poolside wood fired pizza oven, for a casual and entertaining lunch by the pool. As the summer fades, expect hearty seafood and barley stew, winter vegetable minestrone and veal shank with farro, all served with bread baked daily in the house kitchen.

Morning and afternoon tea is available throughout the day offering seasonal fresh fruits and a selection of biscotti, homemade cakes and tarts or a savory selection of fresh breads, grissini, olives, house made pickles and a selection of cheeses are also available.

In the evening the tables are carefully laid with fine Italian Busatti linens, the cutlery antique Sheffield direct from London. A native flannel flower or wild grass reed will take center stage on your table, setting the scene for a more formal affair with tailored degustation, every evening. Of course, menus may be personalized to suit specific dietary requirements and wines and beverages are expertly chosen and paired to suit individual palettes.

Pretty Beach House is ideal for an exclusive buy-out of all four pavilions for the one group and welcomes children aged 13 years and above that are traveling with an adult. This is the ultimate luxury getaway for nature-loving families looking for an idyllic escape close to Sydney.

Facilities and activities

Pretty Beach House presents a collection of premium facilities including open-plan kitchen, spectacular dining room for swapping stories, magnificent sandstone open fireplace and guest lounge/library. There is an open bar, wine cellar, private day spa to retreat to, as well as an outdoor infinity pool and poolside pizza oven for casual alfresco dining.

Australian beach house tour.

There is something quintessential about Australian Coastal style that sets it apart from similar looks around the world.  An Australian beach house is a long held dream for many of us, somewhere to retreat to, or if lucky enough to live in full time.

Australian beach houses need to be understated with a relaxed vibe  Natural organic finishes are crucial with a blend of timber and stone and they shouldn't be over decorated.  I therefore really enjoyed seeing the new holiday home from the very talented Simone Matthews of SOUL Home.  You can hear from Simone and take a tour of The Pause, her latest gorgeous Australian beach house, below.

An Australian beach house tour

Interior designer Simone Mathews of SOUL Home had a clear vision when embarking on The Pause journey, to create a unique take on an Australian Coastal retreat for guests to enjoy. Drawing inspiration from the Bahamas, a touch of the Singaporean classic style with a smattering of Balinese villa, Simone created a home away from home that encompassed a blend of styles suited to the NSW South Coast vibe.

The goal was to design a home that blurred the lines between holiday home and hotel, ensuring guests had that holiday feeling as soon as they pulled up to the property. According to Simone, the key to creating the getaway sanctuary was all in the styling and choice of building materials required to get the look.

Australian Beach House Tour

“When styling, I try to stick to a specific 70/20/10 rule. For The Pause, it was based on a style that revolved around 70% organic, 20% minimal with a final 10% classic layer to bring it all together. So, fusing an organic, minimalist, classical style,” says Simone. “How a house makes you feel is important when designing a home. With this in mind, I chose materials that had a natural and understated finish, you’ll notice there is a mix of timbers, and concrete with a neutral palette. I wanted the home to have a feeling of space and a sense of calm.”

The stunning front façade instantly catches the eye with wide verandas and a textured weatherboard exterior, finished with natural wooden doors and shutters. Cemintel’s ‘Balmoral’ weatherboards were selected by Simone and Ben to achieve the desired design aesthetic and ensure the home matched its coastal surroundings. Importantly, the cladding needed to withstand the salt in the air.

Australian Beach House Tour

The interior is a warm white, supported by brass accents that offer a sleek, clean and understated look. An open-plan kitchen and living area provides a sociable place for guests to commune, with an outdoor dining area that can be enclosed if necessary, becoming an extension of the indoor space.

Australian Beach House Tour

What was equally important to the look, though, was the durability of the building materials. “Holiday properties can’t be precious, and with The Pause, we wanted it to be a family friendly getaway so selecting hard wearing materials was at the forefront of my mind. We used Gyprock Superchek plasterboard throughout the whole house. Being a holiday rental property, durability and noise control were of utmost importance. As Gyprock Superchek is three times tougher than regular plasterboard, we knew it could withstand the impact of children running around and would offer resistance to dents, scuffs and scrapes. Most importantly though, Superchek guaranteed less noise transmitted between the rooms which allows guests to have their privacy,” says Simone.

Australian Beach House Tour

Throughout the home, curves have been used as a stunning design element. In each of the guest bedrooms, arches were incorporated allowing for rooms to be broken into areas, and providing both a decorative feature and additional functionality. “The arches were the hero of the guest bedrooms. They were made to create different zones such as the bedroom, the wardrobe area and the ensuite while also giving the sense of space. Using Superchek made the job really easy as you can just cut the plasterboard to the shape,” Simone says.

Australian Beach House Tour

Moving into the kitchen and dining areas, the most important aspect for Simone was to keep an open plan space where guests can come and congregate. Initially planning on breaking the space into three areas, kitchen, dining and living, Simone and Ben decided to build an oversized concrete island, combining the kitchen and dining areas. “The kitchen and living areas were quite limited in terms of space, so it was important for us to give the feeling of less is more. Pairing strong statement lines with soft curves in the wall achieved using Gyprock Superchek, the style incorporates classic coastal, minimalist and organic themes,” says Simone.

Australian Beach House Tour

One of Simone’s favourite aspects of the build was the feeling of opening the antique timber doors, overlooking the oversized hallway and instantly feeling calm like you’re on holiday. “We’ve really tried to adapt a simple approach as the design of the build and the styling is enough to give it that ‘wow’ factor,” says Simone.

Australian Beach House Tour

Ultimately, The Pause offers a retreat where guests can do just that, pause. Championing the understated approach, the home strips away any unnecessary noise and clutter and provides a place of relaxation and enjoyment.

It subtly references to Palm Springs mid-century modernism and contemporary pavilion structures, challenging the idea of a coastal home. Who else is digging the vibes?
