The 5 Best Rome Golf Cart Tours [2024 Reviews]

Rome is one of the most stunning, cultural cities in Europe, and you could spend years there and still not see it all. There are many ways to tour Rome, but the chaos and traffic can definitely hinder things when it comes to making the most of your time there.

Then there are walking tours, which again, makes maximizing time a challenge, as you can only walk so fast. That’s why I love golf carts, because they can weave in and out of traffic easier, yet are fast enough that you can cover much more ground in less time than if you were to walk or bike.

I’ve gone ahead and detailed the 5 top Rome golf cart tours so you don’t have to, listing only those that I’d take over and over again! Let’s get started!

Rome Golf Cart Tour Reviews

1. golf cart tour in rome.

  • Duration:  3 hours
  • Departure:  Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time: Between 9:30 AM & 7:00 PM
  • Includes:  English-speaking driver, Pick-up from your central hotel in Rome

If it’s your first time in Rome, I can understand how overwhelming it is to figure out what to decide to do first and how to plan everything. However, I recommend taking a tour like this first one.

With the Golf Cart Tour in Rome , you’ll be quickly acquainted with the majority of the city so you can get an overall idea of where everything is. Not only that, but you’ll be able to go back later and explore the parts that you found to be particularly interesting.

As one of the couple of golf cart tours in Rome that pick you up right from your hotel, I found this one to also be one of the most convenient and well-organized.

As your entire party has to fit in a golf cart, it is a small group tour setting where you really get full attention from your guide. It almost felt like we had an expert local bestie who was there to take us to the most popular tourist sites as well as those hidden gems only residents would know!

There’s no way we could’ve seen what we did on foot, visiting everywhere from the massive Colosseum to Piazza Venezia, to the Trevi Fountain and much more.

I know it probably depends heavily on the season, but I loved the open-air design of the golf carts that seemed like there was less “separation” from real-life Rome than what a closed vehicle like a van would.

Expand To See More See Less

Another huge reason why I love this tour is that it’s completely customizable, so we were able to tell our guide what our interests were and they tailored the tour around that.

Our guide knew so much about the history, culture, architecture, and art within the city, and had such fantastic insight into the culinary scene, as well.

While we didn’t go too in-depth at any one specific attraction, it was a great way to gain an overall awareness of Rome and what it has to offer. Combine that, with the anecdotes that the guide shared about their life as a Roman – things that I couldn’t get from a history book.

This next tour is ideal if you’re looking for a tour that people of all ages and abilities can go on! The Private Golf Cart Tour in Rome  offers convenience through the normally chaotic labyrinthine alleys and busy piazzas while still evoking excitement and adventure!

After going on so many foot tours, I was frankly tired and had sore feet that needed a rest, and this was the perfect solution.

The start of the tour was super smooth and easy, as we just met our guide in the center of Rome, which was simple to get to from our hotel. The golf cart was surprisingly comfortable, and the fact that it’s open-air allowed me to see everything without obstructions.

Our driver was very detailed and friendly and perfect for having kids along as they kept them entertained and involved. I don’t know if this is the case with every guide, but ours had a degree in history and archeology, which added an extra layer of education and interest while visiting these older sites.

We started out at the Colosseum and Arch of Constantine, onto the Piazza di Spagna, Trevi Fountain, and so much more. With the ability to tailor the itinerary and stops, it’s perfect for seeing Rome for the first time or with very limited time.

I appreciated the pace of the tour, where I felt we never spent too much nor too little time at stops, which I can’t quite say for many other tours outside of this guide.

Our guide also made sure to stop for photo ops at different points of interest, so we never missed snapping some mementos along the way. I loved learning about Rome’s history and architecture, and I loved the special sight-seeing surprise at the end!

3. rome golf cart tour, best activity in rome.

  • Departure: Piazzale delle Canestre, SNC, 00197 Roma RM, (hotel pickup if private tour selected)
  • Includes:  Free hotel pickup (private experience selection only), English-speaking driver

I’ve seen Rome so many times, that I knew I didn’t want to just see the regular tourist sites for my next tour – I wanted to see the hidden gems that only locals know about!

The Rome Golf Cart Tour, Best Activity in Rome definitely fulfilled that, taking us through the backstreets and many lesser-known sites that were perhaps even more exciting than the big ones.

As this is a completely private tour, however, you get full control of the itinerary beforehand, so you get to choose which landmarks or areas you see.

There is a more affordable option that is not the private tour, in which you still partake in a small group but don’t get to plan the itinerary.

The only other difference between the two is that with the private tour option, they will come pick you right up from your hotel instead of using a meetup point in central Rome.

I selected the private group, and I feel that the customization and the included hotel pickup were well worth the bit of extra cash. Our guide/driver was a wonderful human being, filled with all kinds of information and did a great job safely navigating us around to some of the coolest spots in Rome.

It was much more enriching than simply checking off different sites and learning the cookie-cutter information associated with each one. It’s hard to believe, but I even found the routes that he took to be relaxing, as the backstreets were so quiet and calm.

One of my favorite stops was at the Spanish Steps, which sit between the Piazza di Spagna and Piazza Trinita dei Monti, along with the impressive church at the top, overlooking it all.

Palatine Hill was also really cool to see and learn about, and our guide did a great job explaining the ancient parts and how it was essentially the beginning of all the Roman Empire.

So much knowledge shared, such a different perspective on Rome – I’d definitely recommend this one to anyone who really wants to learn.

4. Rome Golf Cart Tour

  • Departure: Piazzale delle Canestre, 00197 Roma RM
  • Departure Time: 9:30 AM
  • Includes:  English-speaking driver and guide

If you’re looking for a tour that does a great job at covering history and the local culinary scene well, this should be your top option.

The Rome Golf Cart Tour  makes navigating Rome so much more streamlined, avoiding public transportation or large tour buses that people often take on city tours. You can stretch your legs, relax, and just take it all in on the golf cart, making it great for those with limited mobility, too.

If you have your reservations about riding around on a golf cart, trust me – you’re not the only one! However, I found it actually to be a very smooth and safe ride, and our driver was super cautious yet obviously knowledgeable about the streets and how to drive.

If you can, try doing this one early in your trip, as it’s perfect for becoming acquainted with the city and can choose to explore the ones that you found most interesting more in-depth at a later point.

One other thing that I found absolutely invaluable about this tour, was that the guide operated like clockwork and seemingly always managed to get us to the most popular sites before the crowds arrived.

The tour starts at 9:30 am, which isn’t super early and ends around lunchtime, which I find very convenient for working into busy itineraries. This is important as the sites of Rome aren’t all concentrated in the center, as is the case for many European cities.

Rather, they’re all spread out and you can waste a ton of time in traffic if your guide doesn’t know what they’re doing or where they’re going.

Aside from the big sites, we saw charming, traditional shops full of great souvenir opportunities, as well as stops for delicious gelato and espresso.

I’d tried plenty of both in Rome, and the selections our guide made were easily the best of the best!

5. Golf Cart Tour admiring the beauty of Rome!

  • Departure: Piazza di Santa Caterina della Rota, 00186 Roma RM
  • Departure Time: Contact tour operator
  • Includes:  Private transportation, English-speaking guide

If you’re on the lookout for a budget-friendly tour that still offers fantastic value for your money, look no further than this option! The Golf Cart Tour Admiring the Beauty of Rome is one of the most aptly named, as you watch the city’s grandeur unfold at every turn.

It’s an immersive journey that highlights the authentic experience while still offering comfort, convenience, and the opportunity to explore iconic landmarks in a new light.

From the very moment we met up with our guide in central Rome, we were greeted with the charm of Italian hospitality and the obvious expertise of someone who knows what they’re talking about firsthand.

Our guide was more than happy to accommodate us in any way possible, answering any questions we had and tailoring the tour to our specific interests. They seamlessly navigated through Rome’s historic streets, and the open-air golf cart offered panoramic views of all kinds of marvels.

It was impressive just how much ground we were able to cover in a relatively short amount of time, from the majestic Colosseum to the work of art that is the Trevi Fountain. We didn’t just drive by them, either – everything was accompanied by a complete history and interesting stories.

We saw so many places that I’d otherwise have no idea about, and it felt like we were VIPs being able to see exclusive places most tourists don’t get to access. If you’re looking to take some amazing photos and/or videos, this is also the perfect opportunity.

Our guide took us to some incredible vantage points over the city, taking some snapshots to frame later on. We truly got more out of these few hours than we had the week that we explored Rome on our own!

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes since you’ll be walking around and hopping in and out of the golf cart for photos. Ladies should bring a shawl to cover their shoulders if you will be entering any churches.

You’ll definitely want to bring your camera to get photos of all the amazing Rome monuments! Be sure to communicate with your guide and inform them of any special requests beforehand. This will help ensure that your experience is the best it can be.

Why Take a Golf Cart Tour of Rome?

Touring Rome in a golf cart is a great way to pack a lot of sightseeing into one day. While these are not fully accessible trips, they have a lot of advantages over walking tours or trying to do it yourself:

  • More sights in less time, with no worries about navigating from one site to the next.
  • Tours will pause for you to exit the vehicle, take photos, and move around the site, but usually do not enter any ticketed sites.
  • The covered golf cart gets you out of the summer sun- which can really drain your energy, but you’re still in the open air, and experiencing the city life around you.
  • These are small vehicles, so you get an intimate tour with a guide you can hear. No giant groups or huge buses! Many of these golf cart tours are private and can be tailored to your wishes.
  • Touring via golf cart is great for small children or older folks who can’t walk all day- perfect for multi-generational trips! Rome’s cobblestone streets are difficult for strollers, walkers, or any other aides. These golf cart tours whisk you around Rome, saving your legs!
  • Essential for anyone with limited mobility- walking is still involved at some sights, but it is much reduced from visiting without a golf cart. If you, or someone in your group, use a wheelchair or other mobility assistance, be sure to let the tour company know ahead of time.
  • Be aware that the streets of Rome can be bumpy- many of these tours are not recommended for pregnant travelers. However, these carts are street-legal and licensed. You don’t need to worry, they are safe!
  • These vehicles are open on the sides, so they are not great for very cold or rainy weather. These Rome golf cart tours are fantastic for hot summer days when they provide plenty of shade and lots of fresh air.

What to Bring on a Golf Cart Tour of Rome?

The great thing about a gold cart tour of Rome, is you don’t have to bring much! Make sure to bring water, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes. While a golf cart tour reduces your walking, you’ll still need to do some walking on uneven streets.

I personally like these Sketchers , as they come in fun colors and don’t look too “sneaker-ey”, but are comfortable with good support.

Women need to carry a shawl or pashmina to cover their shoulders before entering any church. Avoid short skirts or revealing tops as these will exclude you from entering churches or other sacred spaces as well. Men will also need to cover their shoulders and remove any hats before entering a church (including the Pantheon).

FAQ: Golf Cart Tour of Rome

Yes, it is worth doing a tour of Rome! Rome, Italy is a large city with a lot of history packed into many different neighborhoods. A tour guide can point out details you would otherwise miss, and tell you stories to make the buildings and monuments come to life.

We recommend at least four days in Rome . It’s a large city and you need a few days even to see the highlights. A week would be great, and we hope to go spend a month at some point!

The best months to visit Rome are in the Spring (April, May), and Fall (September, October). You’ll find warm but not scorching hot weather, and avoid the summer crowds. Even in these shoulder seasons, visit popular places like the Trevi Fountain in the morning to avoid crowds.

We highly recommend staying in the hip, cobblestoned neighborhood of Trastevere. These narrow streets are packed with cafes and shops, but you can still walk to the biggest sites in the city. We’ve got the best places to stay in Trastevere for every budget. If you are visiting during the warmer months, consider a Rome hotel with a pool !

We recommend using Welcome Pickups . They’ll meet you at the airport, and take you directly to your hotel. You can add child car seats, leave instructions for your driver (like letting them know you have two strollers), and can book everything online!

There You Have it: Best Golf Cart Tours of Rome

Paulina was our guide and she was simply amazing. Her knowledge and expertise around the history of Rome and the sites we visited was exceptional. She was so sweet and kind, and it felt like being on a tour with a close friend. She took us places we never would have journeyed to had we not been on the tour. This was the perfect way to see Rome in a shorter period of time with my 73yo mother. The walking would have been a bit much for her, so this tour was a fantastic approach. We absolutely recommend this tour and Paulina to anyone considering booking! Well worth it. And at the end she wrote down some of her favorite places for food, coffee and gelato…none of which disappointed! Thank you Paulina! -Maria_L ( see more reviews )

Our guide Alice was a joy–she navigated the winding, crowded, Saturday night streets of Rome with skill. This is a wonderful way to get the lay of the land of Rome–the tour passes by so many big areas (Colosseum, Spanish Steps) as well as neat, less known ones (the Monti area) that we wished it had been our first night in Rome rather than last. And the joy of seeing all these places lit up for the night was immeasurable–they are breathtakingly beautiful at night, and aside from the effect of riding over all those cobblestones(!), this is the best way I can think of to see the city. There is an immediacy to seeing it from a golf cart, too–and yes, there are seat belts! -Kathleen_S ( see more reviews )

Tips for Taking a Golf Cart Tour in Rome

Before you embark on this unique adventure, here are some essential tips to enhance your golf cart tour experience in Rome.

✅ Book ASAP 📅

The best golf cart tours in Rome are booked up super fast! So, book now! Most of the time, they allow full cancellation up to 24 hours in advance if booked on Viator.com .

✅ Dress Appropriately 👚🧢

Rome’s weather can be quite warm during the summer. Wear comfortable clothing , sunglasses, and a hat. Always carry water with you. During the winter, make sure to dress in layers and have a jacket or a coat because it is open-air and can be quite breezy. And women if you think you might be stepping foot into a church make sure to have those shoulders covered. I recommend carrying a shawl or scarf in your purse that way you are always prepared while in Italy.

✅ Comfortable Shoes 👟

Even though you’ll be using a golf cart, there will be instances where you’ll need to get off the cart to explore an attraction, walk into a restaurant, or simply stretch your legs. Comfortable walking shoes will make these moments more pleasant. Rome’s streets and alleys, especially in the historic center, are often made of cobblestones. These can be uneven and sometimes slippery. Good shoes with a solid grip will help prevent trips, slips, or falls.

✅ Tipping 💶

In Rome, people don’t always tip, but it’s nice to do so for tours. For golf cart tours, you can give 10-20% of what the tour costs if it’s a small group. For bigger groups, €5-€10 for each person is okay. You might give a bit more if the guide is great or the tour is long. It’s best to give tips in cash directly to the guide.

Other Must-Do Tours in Rome

Rome is a city steeped in history and culture, offering many amazing tours that showcase its rich heritage. Here are some must-do tours in Rome that you can’t miss!

Explore the vast collection of art in the Vatican Museums, marvel at Michelangelo’s masterpiece in the Sistine Chapel, and visit the awe-inspiring St. Peter’s Basilica.

• Vespa Tours in Rome

Vespa tours in Rome offer a unique, thrilling way to see the Eternal City. Emulating the Italians by zipping around on these iconic scooters not only allows for more flexibility in navigating the city’s winding streets but also provides an authentic Roman experience. 🛵

Kim and Chris in front of the beautiful Trevi Fountain.

If a private tour is within your budget, then a private tour in Rome is definitely worth it. With a one-on-one tour, your tour guide can customize the tour to your family’s interests.

There are two tours I highly recommend doing in Rome. The first is a Golf Cart Tour of Rome and the second is a tour of the Colosseum . A golf cart tour of Rome is the best and most fun way to get an introduction and overview of the city. The Colosseum is the #1 attraction in Italy and one of the most famous attractions in the entire world. There is so much interesting history and facts that you will miss if you do not do a guided tour.

Yes, you can drive a golf cart on the road in Rome, Italy but I do not recommend it. People in Rome drive crazy! 😱 It’s best to take a golf cart tour so you can sit back, relax, and leave the driving to an experienced Rome driver.

The cost of a golf cart tour in Rome can vary depending on what company you go with and the length of the tour. A 3-hour private tour with Rome by Golf Cart Private Tour with Rolling Rome will be about $350 for a family of 4.

Final Thoughts

A golf cart tour of Rome is a must-do on an Italy vacation . It’s the perfect way to get an overview of the city and see many things you wouldn’t otherwise be able to see. Plus, it’s a lot of fun!!

“This was a lovely experience! 2 hours to wander the gallery on your own, followed by a 30 minute cart ride through the gardens with a little history lesson on the way. Highly recommend it!” Stephanie, Tiqets

5 – Rome: Catacombs and Appian Way Guided Tour by Golf Cart

Rome_ Catacombs and Appian Way Guided Tour by Golf Cart

Rating: ⭐️ 4.8/5 ( 106 reviews )

“It was an awesome experience! Highly recommend! It was really nice to get out and see more of Rome besides what the other tours show that we had already walked to and seen.” Melinda, Getyourguide

Let Wheel Tours introduce you to Rome within and beyond the Aurelian Walls. Marvel at the celebrated landmarks of the “centro storico” before following the famed Appian Way to the Catacombs of Rome .

Along this military and trade route that made Rome into a super power of old, venture 16 meters underground to discover a subterranean cemetery. This private visit is packed with fact, curiosities, photo ops and entertainment from your guide.

If you’re looking to see parts of Rome that aren’t on other tours’ itineraries, the catacombs and Appian Way tour is an ideal choice. This tour doesn’t put as heavy an emphasis on the Appian Way as its name implies. Yet, the combination of major sites in central Rome and uncommon attractions past the city walls makes this trip a winner.

Private Golf Cart Tours

Rome by golf cart.

Rome by golf cart  is  private tour , we don’t put groups together. The itinerary for  the golf cart tour  is not preset, it can be discussed with the driver-guide the day of the tour so to avoid overlapping and repetitions. If you’re in Rome for the first time, we suggest the tours that cover  Rome’s major highlights in the golf cart , if instead you are familiar with Rome, and there are some sites in particular you want to see, we’ll help you design your own tour! We have daytime  golf cart tours of Rome  lasting 4, 6 or 7 hours and 2-hour night tours. Our  half day golf cart tours  start at 9:30 am or 2:30 pm. Our 6 and 7-hour tour can start at the time you like. The 4-hour  golf cart tour  can also be combined with a  walking tour of the Vatican  (including Museums, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica) or a tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum. Please visit the section hereunder to get an idea of what you can see in 4, 6 or 7hours.

Golf Cart Tours

Suggested itineraries

4-hour tours Four hours are enough to see Rome’s major highlights or some of its tucked away sites. here you find the basic tours for first timers, covering Rome’s most famous places, or theme tours for those who want to explore Rome more in depth.

We’ll show the highlights you shouldn’t miss and some of the tucked away sites: Colosseum (outside), Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps. The visit of the inside of the Colosseum requires a long time, during the golf cart tour. Its visit and, while you’re with us in the golf cart, we’d rather show you around places you’d never find otherwise. If you want to visit the Colosseum inside or tour the Vatican, your golf cart tour can be ended at either one of these places. You can also combine your golf cart tour with a tour of the Colosseum or the Vatican.

“Ancient Rome”  normally refers to the area of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. All three sites are concentrated in one compound and they’re accessed with the same ticket. This is normally done as a walking tour but, if you don’t care for walking around the area for three hours and you want to see more of the ruins of Ancient Rome, we’ll show you the area from the outside in the golf cart and we’ll include other sites. This what we generally manage to show you during this tour:  Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, Monument to Victor Emmanuel II (Wedding Cake), Theatre of Marcellus, Baths of Caracalla, Old Appian Way, Aventine Hill.  You can also combine your golf cart tour with a tour of the Colosseum or the Vatican.

Al of our tours show you tucked away sites, but  if you want to concentrate on sites off the beaten path, this is the tour for you . Again this is a private tour, so you can discuss the itinerary with your driver/guide just before you start the tour but, just to give you an idea of the sites you can visit here’s a short list: Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, San’Andrea delle Fratte, the Roman Houses on the Celian Hill, the Roman Walls, the Roman Aqueducts and a lot more…  You can also combine your golf cart tour with a tour of the Colosseum or the Vatican .

You’ll drive down the quaint streets of old Rome to get to the Jewish Ghetto. Beware that the original Ghetto was demolished 1888 because considered insalubrious, but the old streets by which we reach the Ghetto still give you a pretty good idea of what the Ghetto of Rome used to be like. The Ghetto is where the Synagogue and the Jewish schools for children, the Kosher food shops and restaurants are. In other words, even though this isn’t the original Ghetto, it’s still the centre of Jewish life in Rome and so it’s a lively, pleasant place where to spend some time maybe tasting some of the Roman/Jewish specialities like the famous “Carciofi alla Giudia” artichokes fried “the Jewish way”. This tour covers also other Jewish memories outside of the Ghetto. If you want to tour the inside of the Synagogue and the Jewish Museum, you can get dropped off there end of our tour, or we can meet you there after you’ll have toured the place. Vatican .

This tour is centred on the sites they touch in  the movie/novel Angels & Demons : the Pantheon, Piazza del Popolo and Santa Maria del Popolo; Santa Maria della Vittoria, St. Peter’s Square, Tiber River near Tiber Island (which is really called the island of St. Bartholomew, but no one seems remember that), Piazza Navona,  the “Passetto” and Castel Sant’Angelo . However, these are also some of the main sites of Rome, so it’s somewhat like the standard tour of Rome for first timers, but some of the sites you’d see during the regular “Fundamental Rome” are left out in favour of the ones they show in  the movie The Vatican  part is left out because they are part of  the Vatican tour  and such tour is the ideal sequel of this  Angels & Demons tour,  so you might want to consider  combining your golf cart tour with a tour of the Vatican.

6-hour tours Four hours are enough to see Rome’s major highlights or some of its tucked away sites. It goes without saying that if you take a longer tour you see more sites, but if you’re like you can also relax and enjoy some of the typical foods Rome offers. See what you can cover in six hours hereunder.

Da risrivere

This tour  covers the same sites that the 4-hour tour covers but, in addition, it includes the Christian Catacombs. So you’ll see the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill from the outside in  the golf cart  and we’ll include other sites like the Monument to Victor Emmanuel II (Wedding Cake), Theatre of Marcellus, Aventine Hill, Baths of Caracalla, Old Appian Way and stop at the Christian Catacombs for a guided tour (included in the price of the admission ticket). Time permitting, you can also stop  to visit the Museum of the Roman  Walls and other sites that will be on the way to the Catacombs.

Those who visited Rome already and want to see something different from the usual “must see” highlights, will surely  enjoy this tour!  We’ll take them to see some of the sites that are not advertised and which fewer people know about. Obviously, like all the other tours this also can be customized, but we’d like to list with some of the sites we’ll take you to see, so you can check them out: The Roman Houses on the Celian Hill, The church of the Saints John & Paul, Porta Maggiore (the place where most of the Roman Aqueducts converged), The church of St. Ignatius with its wonderful ceiling, the hill formed by the broken pottery that the Romans dumped in one place… But probably, some people would also  enjoy merging into the life of the present Romans  for a little while and visit a typical open air market and/or do other things of this kind.

If you’re fascinated by the Romans’ engineering, you’ll love to go on this tour!  The Romans are famous for the roads, the aqueducts and the walls they built  and this tour shows all three. You’ll drive on the first one of the roads the Romans built, the Old Appian Way, you’ll pass by the city walls and you’ll stop  to visit the Catacombs  (or you might skip them and see more of the Roman ruins) the you’ll continue to a beautiful park where several aqueducts converged before getting to the city and you’ll follow a couple of them all the way to Porta Maggiore (the place where most of the Roman Aqueducts came together once in the city).

Everywhere in Rome you can see frescoes that where done by famous artists centuries ago, Roman ruins and beautiful churches, but what about now? What do the artists do in Rome nowadays?  This tour will take you to see architecture and Street Art  from the 20th and 21st centuries. Again, we’ll customize this tour for you and we can focus on Street Art, if that’s what entices you, centre the tour on Modern Architecture or cover a little of both if you like. You’ll see the murals covering the entire façade of condos, sculpted dead trees, some horrible and some nice present architecture and, of course, you’ll have the opportunity to have a nice lunch somewhere out of the tourist area.

7-hour tours Four hours are enough to see Rome’s major highlights or some of its tucked away sites. It goes without saying that if you take a longer tour you see more sites, but if you’re like you can also relax and enjoy some of the typical foods Rome offers. See what you can cover in six hours hereunder.

Rome is located in the region of Lazio, near the and is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations in Italy. It has the highest population of all cities in Italy and sits about 1 hour from the western coast.

And when it comes to tourism, it’s no surprise that visitors from around the globe travel to Rome to see its beauty and Renaissance art, experience Roman cuisine and Italian cooking , shop the fashion capital, discover the piazzas and fountains, explore the historical landmarks, or even practice Italian phrases that they’ve learned.

How to Get Around Rome

Getting around the cobbled-stoned streets of Rome is not hard. I’ve walked, biked, and bused throughout Rome and loved it! All are great ways to get around and the method you choose depends on how much time you have and your personal preference.

I recommend the  Big Bus Tour  or a Golf Cart Tour in Rome if you are short on time or if you booked your travel in the dead heat of summer (which can be intensely hot).

With these tours, you’ll see all the top Rome attractions with audio commentary in your language of choice. If you choose an open top tour bus, the added benefit is free wi-fi and for 3 extra euros, you can use your ticket for two days (it is worth it).

When it comes to seeing Rome, walking can not be avoided especially when getting to an attraction that require climbing hilly pathways or navigating ancient streets. In my opinion, being on foot is one of the best ways to travel in Rome.

Exploring the narrow streets can lead you to the most marvelous pasta, the creamiest gelato, or the most perfect pasta! I highly recommend visiting the Trastevere neighborhood for  Italian street food .

Public Transportation

This is the best option for getting to a part of town that is more than 20 minutes on foot, especially if visiting a museum or park. Save your energy and use public transportation for less than 2 euros. You can purchase them at the tobacconist store.

You will need to validate your ticket upon boarding the bus (it’s an honor system). Getting caught with an un-validated ticket can result in a fine. You should also use a really good map of Rome.

Bike or Vespa

Peddling around the city on your own time feels so liberating. Bike rental is very affordable and is an enjoyable way to experience the outdoors, get some exercise to make up for all the  Italian breakfasts  that you eat, and explore Rome.

You can find rentals for as little as 13 euros for 24 hours, complete with lock, for a standard bike. The price for e-bikes is higher.

Getting around on a two-passenger scooter is loads of fun!  Rent a Vespa to skirt traffic or explore outside the city. They can be rented by the hour or day. This will make your trip to Rome memorable as you travel in true Italian style!

How to Get to Central Rome from FCO Airport

There are several options to get from Leonardo da Vinci International Airport to the center of the city. I found the train to be the quickest and most affordable especially if you’ve had a long day of travel and want to get to Termini station.

The most economical way to get from the airport to the city center is via a shuttle bus service from the airport. You can travel conveniently between Rome’s city center and the airport and take pleasure in a stress-free arrival or departure from the city.

The ride takes about 50 minutes and departures run from the airport every 30 to 40 minutes so you have time to collect your luggage. Shuttles stop in Terminal 3’s arrivals section. Look for the respective service at the arrival platform.

Terravision offers a shuttle service for less than 8 euros it’s quite popular. The buses are air-conditioned and there is no cost to bring your luggage aboard. It goes directly to Termini station with no extra stops.

Another option is the public transportation system, which costs about 6 euros. The bus stops multiple times in the city center, including one close to the Vatican and one at Termini Station, throughout the 45- to 1-hour one-way trip.

Buses halt in Terminal 3’s arrivals section, at number 14. You can purchase tickets at the airport desk or online.

A taxi is quite expensive. It will set you back almost 50 euros and the ride takes just as long as a shuttle service (about 50 minutes). You can find the taxis at the arrival level of Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.

The Leonardo Express train is less than 20 euros and runs every 15 minutes during peak periods. It is operated by Trenitalia and the ride takes about 30 to 40 minutes.

If you wait to collect your luggage, and then make your way to the window or kiosk to purchase your ticket, note that many others will be doing the same. Hate long lines? You can purchase tickets in advance and be ready for validation after boarding the train.

I can’t recommend a car rental unless you plan a day trip and need a set of wheels. Rome is completely walkable. Not to mention, even Italians know that finding a parking space can be a hassle.

Tips for Visiting Rome

I adore visiting Italy. And no trip would be complete without seeing some of the most iconic and historic spots in the Eternal City.

Don’t make the mistake (that I made on my first trip) and skip these incredible spots! Fortunately, I was able to see them on return visits!

Whether you are visiting the Vatican for the first time or returning because you tossed a coin into the Trevi fountain, these Rome travel tips will come in handy to make your stay enjoyable.

  • Be prepared! Read these tips on the essentials for an international flight .
  • Think comfort when flying coach , it will help you stay calm and confident.
  • Beware of scammers, pickpockets, and panhandlers. It’s a thing in Europe and it can happen when you least expect it.

So, what are you waiting for? Book that flight to Rome and thank me later.
