53 Best Places To Visit In Andaman For A Mesmerising Holiday Experience

I am a travel enthusiast from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh who has been wandering and exploring the whole of India since 2014. My passion for traveling has grown ever since I started riding and since then the wanderlust in me has managed to explore around 22 states of India. Being a biker, I particularly like traveling to the mountains and I have created milestones ever since. I was the first person who at the age of 18 completed the Delhi-Leh Biking Tour. Well, I did not stop at that and at the age of 22, I was the youngest traveler to complete the Chader Trek and was also awarded the youngest Chader trekker by Asia Book of Records. However, I believe that more than my achievements I cherish my experiences that I was able to gather while traveling to all these places.

This time I decided to set out on a vacation to the Andamans. I was really attracted to the social appearance that TravelTriangle made through their social media promotions and therefore this time, I decided to book a package of solo trip to Andaman from TravelTriangle and that has truly made all the difference!

DAY 1: Riding Solo!

An adventurous trip

I took a flight from Chennai and landed on Port Blair. A taxi was already arranged for us by the TravelTriangle agent and it was a great relief to find the driver at the airport before I arrived. On arrival at the hotel, I checked in and after relaxing I got ready for a sightseeing tour. I went to Corbyn’s Cove, which is a clean and beautiful beach and was surrounded by jet-skis.

intriguing stories of this historical jail

An adventurous jet-ski experience was awaiting us by the beach. The ski ride got us all the thrill that I required on this trip. The beach was a little crowded but I managed to make most of our time by the beach.

Next, I headed to the cellular jail where our tickets were already booked by the travel agent and we managed to escape the long queues. Walking into the history of this wonderful place, the local guides told us the intriguing stories of this historical jail. Later in the evening, I also attended the light show which was truly inspiring. Later, in the day, I strolled through the local markets of the city. Our entire day was pre-planned by TravelTriangle and done right.

DAY 2: A day well-spent on the islands!

boarded a cruise to Havelock

Today, after breakfast, I boarded a cruise to Havelock. The mesmerizing views of the sea and the cool breeze gave a soothing and relaxing ambiance. After the cruise, a cab took us to “Hotel Havizz”. It was a 3-star property and the private swimming pool was a great place to unwind. I relaxed by the pool and enjoyed the exceptional services at the hotel. Later in the evening, I explored the local markets. For evening entertainment, I attended the night party hosted at Havelock Beach Resort and enjoyed a thrilling

DAY 3: The Bewitching Beaches in Havelock

enjoying the pleasant weather

Today, my day started with sipping a coffee at the hotel balcony. The pleasant weather gave way to a wonderful day as I started my trip at 9:00 in the morning. I first visited Kala Pathar Beach, a stretch of white sand with dense forests that lie in front. I spent a relaxing time in the peace and calmness of the beach. Hereafter, I spent some time on the Radha Nagar Beach where I collected wood from the nearby forest and decided to set up a camp on the beach with an Indian flag. Later I returned back to the hotel after an action-packed day.

DAY 4: Pearls in a sea of blue!

starting for scuba diving

One of the main reasons for planning my trip to Andaman was scuba diving and this day was really special for me as TravelTriangle made this dream come true. 1 hour of underwater scuba diving allowed me to take a closer glance at the marine life. I got to see a variety of underwater aquatic animals and the unique aquatic plants. I also got to indulge in a variety of water sports like jet ski, banana ride, and snorkeling at the Elephant Beach. After a day well-spent, I returned to back to Port Blair.

DAY 5: A dive into the culture of Andaman

find the beauty of the beach

Today, I visited the “Ross Island” the former headquarter of the British colony. Amidst the wild vines, stand the Officers Quarters and Church. A state of art and light show is the major highlight of this island hosted by the tourism department. The show was a delight. I also found exotic wildlife animals like peacock, duck and captured some amazing pictures. I spent some time soaking up the tranquility of the place and later went to visit the “North Bay” Island. A lighthouse can be spotted on the beach. I indulged in a variety of water sports like and adventure activities like glass boat riding, sea walking, and snorkeling. The beautiful coral reef formation is a must-watch.

DAY 6: Bidding Adieu to the haven!

exploring the place lastly

After 5-nights of adventure, thrill, and peace on the island, today was the day to end this exciting solo trip to Andaman. But before I boarded my flight, I wanted to experience the whole of the island. So, I visited the “Marine Park and Aquarium”. The aquarium houses a large variety of fishes, snakes, and other underwater animals. I got a lot of helpful information from the museum about the aquatic and marine life. Beautiful coral reefs and marine plants can also be seen. Finally, it was time to board my flight back to Chennai and bid adieu to the Andamans.

A first-timer’s guide to India’s Andaman Islands

andaman solo trip

Glittering salt-white beaches washed by teal shallows, swirls of ancient, often-impassable jungle, hot-pink sunrises over spindly coconut palms – the Andaman Islands , scattered like pearls in the twinkling Andaman Sea, remain a tantalising mystery to most travellers.

Two men paddle in the shallows of an otherwise empty beach on Havelock Island, which is part of the Andaman Islands archipelago. The white-sand beach is backed by forest.

Remote and still a challenge to reach, the dreamy Andamans lie geographically closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than the rest of India (1370km to the west), and are populated by both South and Southeast Asian settlers, and (sadly threatened) indigenous tribal communities. Together with the off-limits Nicobar Islands (south of the Andamans), the archipelago comprises 572 islands, with just a handful accessible to visitors. Those that do make the long journey here will find an alluring laid-back vibe, a compendium of India’s best beaches and some of the finest diving and surfing in Asia.

Considering a visit? Covering everything from how to get there to where to stay, here’s our guide to visiting the Andaman Islands for the first time.

A group of Indian children playing in the shallow turquoise waters near the Havelock Island jetty.

How to get to the Andaman Islands

There are no international flights to the Andamans, so you’re looking at a domestic flight into Port Blair from mainland-India cities such as Chennai , Hyderabad , Mumbai , Delhi or Bengaluru . It's also possible to reach the islands via the original route: by sea. A few ferries rattle across the Bay of Bengal to Port Blair from Chennai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam , though timings are unreliable and distances long.

The requirement for foreigners to have a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to visit the Andamans was overturned in 2018. Now travellers can visit 29 inhabited and 11 uninhabited islands without permits, including Havelock Island, Neil Island, Long Island, North Andaman, South Andaman, Middle Andaman and Little Andaman (though always excluding tribal areas).

Best time to visit the Andaman Islands

December to March are the top months for warm, sunny weather, good transport links and the best diving conditions, and you’re also likely to spot turtles nesting on Middle and North Andaman. The shoulder months of October, November, April and May are less reliable weather-wise, though accommodation prices drop, crowds are down and there’s consequently less strain on the natural environment.

The shell of an old Protestant church built of stone masonry, with windows made from Burma teak, that still stands on Ross Island in the Andamans. The church is missing its roof, and through the hole - and window gaps - the green jungle is visible.

An overview of each of the islands

Everyone’s first (ahem) port of call is the bustling provincial capital Port Blair , on South Andaman. While in town sorting out travel arrangements, it’s worth exploring the chilling British-built 1906 Cellular Jail National Memorial , where political prisoners were once held, and the jungle-wreathed Victorian British–style ruins on Ross Island (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep), the islands’ colonial-era administrative headquarters until 1941. But the best of this region is out in the wild: the 280 sq km Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park is a popular day trip from Port Blair (permit required).

Where to stay: Andaman Homestay , Port Vista and Lalaji Bay View are reliable budget-to-midrange picks. Towards the upper end, go for Fortune Resort Bay Island or Sinclairs Bayview , both with sea panoramas.

Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

When people rave about the Andamans, they’re often talking about dazzling Havelock Island , the most developed of the islands. Silky beaches backed by thick rainforest melt into sparkling turquoise water, and the diving and snorkelling here rival the very best in South Asia. Established operators such as Dive India , Ocean Tribe and Barefoot Scuba lead you through underwater depths to spot wrecks, sharks, rays, turtles, schools of snapper and more.

Post-diving, laze away your days catching the sunrise at Kalapathar , swimming at sheltered Neil’s Cove and strolling along fabulous Radhanagar , one of Asia’s most spectacular beaches, before settling in for home-cooked Indian-international dinners, perhaps at Full Moon Café or Anju-Coco Resto . For something more active, hike into the lushly forested interior and to Elephant Beach , or join a kayaking expedition through the mangroves.

Where to stay: Eco-conscious British-run Jalakara offers boutique seclusion, a seductive infinity pool and seven uniquely designed rooms amid betel-nut trees and banana palms. Just back from Radhanagar’s sands, ecofriendly island original Barefoot at Havelock has graceful bamboo, timber and tented cottages. Budget-friendly haunts include Emerald Gecko’s beachside huts; Flying Elephant , with its bungalows overlooking electric-green rice paddies; and backpacker favourite Green Imperial . Most dive schools have simple accommodation.

A huge, admittedly slightly terrifying, spotted fish swims towards a diver off the coast of Havelock Island. In the background a reef is visible with smaller fish swimming around it.

Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

A few notches down in busyness from its sister Havelock just north across the water, Neil Island is a delightfully easy-going, pancake-flat world of rice fields, palm trees, rocky beaches, a small bazaar and a sleepy jetty that leaps into action when ferries arrive. Budget travellers head here for the rustic beach-hut vibe that originally lured people to Havelock (though mainstream tourism is on the rise on Neil, too). While Neil’s beaches aren’t fantastic for swimming, there’s excellent diving courtesy of pioneering schools like India Scuba Explorers and Dive India (you might even spot a dugong!).

Where to stay: Fuss-free bungalows such as Emerald Gecko , Breakwater Beach Resort and Kalapani epitomise all that’s wonderful and laid-back about Neil. Waterside SeaShell is arguably the island’s most upmarket stay.

Little Andaman

The kind of deliciously isolated place mentioned in hushed whispers among enamoured travellers, Little Andaman is the southernmost island that it's possible to visit in the Andamans. It's bordered by powder-soft, sun-dusted white beaches, tangles of mangroves and tumbling teal waves that make for some of India’s most terrific surf, especially at sweeping Butler Bay and from February to April. Around 130km south of Port Blair, Little Andaman suffered serious casualties during the 2004 tsunami, but has since bounced back and now ranks among the most enticing destinations in the Andamans. Around 25 sq km of the island is a protected, off-limits tribal reserve for the indigenous Onge people.

Where to stay: Most accommodation is of the budget beach cottage genre; try Hawva Beach Resort or Ieshika Resort, just back from Netaji Nagar beach. Many guest houses rent surfboards.

Middle & North Andaman

Few travellers tackle the long journey north from Port Blair to Middle and North Andaman, but venture here and you’ll uncover outstanding snorkelling, pristine honey-gold beaches, impenetrable primeval jungle, a world-renowned turtle-nesting site, a string of eerie limestone caves, a smattering of serene offshore islets, and much more.

Kalipur beach  (just outside the Andamans’ second-largest settlement, Diglipur, in far North Andaman) is believed to be the only place in the world where leatherback, hawksbill, olive ridley and green turtles nest on the same coastal stretch (mid-December to March or April). There is simple accommodation at Kalipur, from where hikes up the Andamans’ highest mountain, 732m-tall Saddle Peak , can also be arranged.

In the remote area around Mayabunder, on Middle Andaman, you can stay amid glinting rice fields with a local conservationist family at self-sufficient Ko Hee Homestay , heading out on wildlife-spotting treks and learning about traditional crafts. Or get away from it all with a spell on quiet, untouristed Long Island, just off Middle Andaman, where bamboo-clad Blue Planet is the only place to stay.

A view of a rock formation on the beach of Neil Island. The rock has been eroded to form a large arch, spanning a section of the rocky beach.

Getting around

Once you’ve made it to Port Blair, the only way to reach most of the other islands is by ferry. Government ferry tickets are released just three days ahead (it can be a scramble at ticket offices!); tickets aren’t available online and you’ll need to ask locally for schedules (there’s an information office at Port Blair’s Phoenix Bay Jetty). Buses trundle north from Port Blair through Middle Andaman and on to Diglipur on North Andaman – cheap, though time-consuming!

Thankfully, Havelock and Neil are also linked to Port Blair and each other by private ferries operated by Makruzz , Green Ocean , Sea Link and ITT Majestic ; these usually open for bookings (including online) at least a month ahead, making them the easiest option for travellers. On most islands, hiring your own bicycle or motorbike is the best way to explore.

Visiting the islands responsibly

The Andamans’ fragile ecosystems and small, isolated communities remain seriously at risk from tourism (and other) development. Divers and snorkellers can help by choosing environmentally responsible operators, ensuring reefs aren’t damaged (by flippers, or by touching marine life etc), while more general practices include minimising single-use plastics, clearing any rubbish encountered, not removing shells from beaches, and supporting hotels, shops and restaurants committed to a green ethos. If you’re looking to donate your time, the NGO Reef Watch Marine Conservation accepts volunteers.

Meanwhile, for both safety and dignity, the islands’ indigenous tribal communities live in regions off-limits to visitors. Heartbreakingly, many groups have become extinct in the last century, and there are serious repercussions for anyone caught trying to access these restricted areas.

It’s also worth noting there have been several fatal crocodile attacks in the Andamans in recent years: check locally as to where it’s safe to swim and keep out of the water at dawn and dusk.

Best of Andaman itinerary for 7 days

Day 1: Arrival in Port Blair & visit Cellular Jail

Port Blair is the capital city & entry point to Andaman and Nicobar Islands, reached by Air or Sea, from where you will get several options to explore the entire island. We preferred to fly down at Veer Savarkar International Airport, Port Blair, located just outside the city.

You will be fascinated by seeing the first glimpse of islands from the flight just before the landing, so keep your mobile ready to click pictures. The airport is small and basic, easy to get outside and find a taxi or auto.

First glimpse of Andaman from the flight

We always try to reach the destination in the morning or till afternoon, so that we can get the rest of the day to venture out after checking in the hotel and freshen up. Go easy on your first day, try to figure out the places around your hotel, find some good restaurants to eat, explore local markets and transportation services, or you can pick up a rental bike/car to roam around.

We stayed in The J Hotel , located in the city center, near Aberdeen bazaar from where all the attractions are in proximity.

J Hotel Port Blair Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Later in the afternoon slot, visited Cellular Jail (1.2 km– 3 min drive from J hotel), also known as ‘Kalapani’, a former colonial prison during the British rule, now a memorial turned museum, illustrates inhuman and unimaginable tortures, struggles of freedom fighters for India’s independence.

You will get a chance to explore this historical national monument on your own at your own pace and dig into the brutal history.

Cellular Jail, Port Blair

In the evening, attend the Light and Sound show at the same place, where the heroic saga of the Indian freedom struggle is brought alive. It gives you goosebumps.

  • Entry fees for the museum, light & sound show are separate, not much, and worth spending for.
  • Autos and taxis are readily available as a commute with reasonable charges.

Day 2: Scuba diving at North Bay Island, visit Ross Island

Andaman Water Sports Complex, Port Blair

To boost up the vacation, we chose to start our day 2 with Scuba diving. After finishing breakfast, we rushed to Andaman Water Sports Complex to hire a speed boat to North Bay Island, where you can enjoy all kinds of thrilling water sports.

We both are non-swimmers, and the fact is Saurabh has an underwater phobia, but we both did it with absolute ease and fun.

Scuba diving at Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Scuba diving services are available on Havelock Island as well. If Scuba diving is not your cup of tea and find it more difficult, then you can try other water sports too like – sea walking (It is comparatively easy but equally exciting), snorkeling, glass-bottom boat riding, jet skiing, banana boat & speed boat rides.

Just choose your sport by how much thrill can you handle and of course bearing in mind the age factor.

Alternate plan- If you are not interested in any of the water sports, then instead of going to North Bay Island, enjoy your morning on Corbyn’s Cove beach till the afternoon.

Ross Island, Andaman and Nicobar Islands

After returning to the water sports complex take another boat or maybe the same boat from North Bay Island will take you directly to Ross Island (recently named as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep), where you can spend 2-3 hours.

Take a walk through Ross Island (Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep) is another historical place, once occupied by the Japanese from 1942 to 1945, who was helping Mr. Subhash Chandra Bose to fight against the British empire.

You will find their imprints here, now a historical tourist attraction; consists of remains of Japanese bunkers & colonies naturally sheltered by roots and branches of the trees, creating photogenic spots!

Remains of Japanese bunkers & colonies naturally sheltered by roots and branches of the trees at Ross Island

This island has beautiful surroundings of palm and coconut trees and is home to various species of birds, Spotted Deer, Hens, and Peacocks.

They also conducted a Light and Sound Show in the evening, but we skipped the show and returned to Water Sports Complex & spent some time there, clicking pictures at the Tsunami Memorial and Rajiv Gandhi Statue.

  • Please carry your lunch pack, and drinking water with you while exploring North Bay Island & Ross Island.
  • Please carry changing clothes, if you are performing water sports. The clothes-changing facilities are available at North Bay Island.
  • North Bay Island & Ross Island are closed on Wednesday.

Day 3: Journey to Havelock Island, visit Radha Nagar Beach

After spending an audacious day, it is now time to rejuvenate from head to toe, and there is no better place than Havelock Island for relaxation. It was recently named as Swaraj Dweep.

On Day 3, we woke up early, checked out from our hotel, and proceeded to Phoenix Bay Jetty (1.5 km- 4 min drive from J Hotel) to board the early morning (8.15 AM) Makruzz ferry (Privately owned, luxury, air-conditioned, high-speed catamaran) to the Havelock Islands. It was a 1.5-hour cruise ride to enjoy the seascapes.

Want to know about our experience with Makruzz Ferry?

You can opt for a government ferry that will take a little longer and is cheaper than the private catamaran, but the main drawback is that online bookings are not allowed & tickets can be bought only at the counter two days before the departure, which we found little risky if already booked.

Makruzz ferry to Havelock Island

Havelock Island is the most visited and popular, must-see destination, home to exotic-looking beaches, and outstanding coral reefs with fascinating marine life that excites snorkelers & divers. Do you know that a larger part of the island is a dense rainforest offering ample opportunity for bird watching & hiking?

On arrival to Havelock Island, you will fall in love at first sight with the mesmerizing beauty of the island, emerald-colored water with white sand & greenery on the backdrop, rustic, not so fancy looking yet so charming!

Havelock Island

The pace of life is slow, the locals are friendly and the facilities are moderately basic. You will observe local businesses, tour offices, ticket counters for Elephant Beach, ferry service offices, restaurants, and bike rentals right there at the Havelock ferry terminal, so you don’t need to worry about searching for anything.

You can pick up a rental bike or take an auto/tuk-tuk to your hotel. Bike rentals can also be arranged by your respective hotel/resort on your demand.

Havelock Ferry Terminal

After settling in our cozy, eco-friendly Nicobari-style villa at Silver Spring Resort located at Shyam Nagar No. 4, on a hilltop overlooking lush green trees, from where Radha Nagar Beach (Asia’s best & world’s most beautiful beach) is just 7 Km away, so if you don’t mind staying away from beach crowd & expensive hotels, this indeed good deal within the budget!

Read our staycation experience of Silver Spring Resort and the list of good hotels in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Nicobari style villa at Silver Spring Resort Havelock Island

We were so excited to see Radha Nagar Beach and without having lunch we made our first visit to this awesome place. Outside the beach, you’ll find many local shops selling fresh local fruits, and coconut water, renting snorkels and fins, some of them selling bamboo hats, sarongs, fish-bone arts, ornaments made from pearls and seashells, real conch shells, coconut handicrafts, etc. We bought one big conch seashell as a souvenir of the Andaman trip & attractive pearl shell earrings and bracelets for gifting purposes.

We were already starving, and our hunger intensified by the aroma coming out from a local, not-so-fancy-looking eatery, where we fulfilled our appetite by having authentic super delicious fish fry varieties.

Here’s a quick tip, eat like a local, if you want to taste authentic dishes, never go to big fancy restaurants on the islands, you’ll end up spending extra for a regular taste.

Entrance gate of Radha Nagar Beach, Havelock Island

Radha Nagar Beach is the main attraction in Havelock Island and became popular worldwide in 2004, voted as one of Asia’s Best Beaches by Time Magazine, it’s a pride of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and surely a must-see place.

A long stretch of white sandy beach, ocean green water, surrounded by thick mangrove forest, and cleanliness make it even more beautiful and appealing for swimming. However, you might be disappointed because it is a very crowded place.

Radha Nagar Beach, Havelock Island

This beach has changing rooms, luggage counters, lockers, and toilets for visitor’s use. Spending an evening here and watching a gorgeous sunset will certainly be one of your biggest highlights from the trip.

Normally after sunset, everybody returns to their respective places/hotels before it’s dark. Be careful not to miss the last jeep/auto/tuk-tuk back if you’re not staying nearby. We concluded the day with a dinner in our hotel’s in-house restaurant, which was average in taste.

Radha Nagar Beach

Note that –

  • While purchasing any Conch shell, please make sure its corners/edges are not sharp, to be cut down before purchase, or else the airport authority will not permit entry on the plane, also do not forget to take receipt of purchase from the shopkeeper and keep it handy during luggage screening in the airport.
  • Please carry extra clothes if you are interested in swimming in Radha Nagar Beach, changing rooms & lockers are available for rent.
  • After the evening, do not stay on any beaches and sometimes not permitted by the beach authorities unless any activities are made by the respective resorts near the beach in Havelock Island.
  • Makruzz ferry does not operate from April to September & all guests traveling to Havelock are required to carry ID proofs in order to issue their ticket back from Havelock – Port Blair.

Day 4: Excursion to Elephant Beach, Snorkeling, Evening at Govind Nagar

On the second day in Havelock Island, we decided to go to Elephant Beach as the weather was pleasant, clear skies, absolutely perfect for snorkeling.

The complimentary breakfast from the hotel was so delicious with many varieties, potato curry with puri (Indian fried thin sliced round bread), toasted bread with jam and butter served with hot tea and our favorite hot South-Indian delicacies were so yummy and fulfilling for the day.

We got ready and left the hotel by 8 AM, came to the same spot at the Havelock ferry terminal to board a speed boat. The 25-minute boat ride to the Elephant Beach was a pleasure to your eyes full of panoramic views and the first sight of Elephant Beach was outstanding.

Elephant Beach, Havelock Island

It is an isolated beach that offers snorkelers calm, pristine shallow water with light blue color, amazing colorful coral reefs probably the best on the Island, starts remarkably close to the shore at a depth of about one meter with plenty of marine life, is simply the perfect spot for beginner snorkelers.

Elephant Beach, Havelock Island

If you are an experienced snorkeler, then just slip on your gear and start snorkeling in shallow water spots. Non-swimmers like us can experience it through dive shops with the help of instructors; many resorts arrange snorkeling and diving trips here.

The price ranges around 1000-1500 INR per person (provided with snorkeling gear), which we think is worth the experience and is less risky than scuba diving. Any age group of people can perform snorkeling with ease, it is just that you are floating on the surface and the instructor is right there with you.

Snorkelling at Elephant Beach, Havelock Island

It is reachable on foot from Radha Nagar Beach # 7. This place is great to spend the day lying on the beach, sunbathing, and relaxing, offers incredible picture-perfect scenes with fallen trees and white sand, giving the opportunities for photographers to try some interesting shots using fallen tree branches as a property.

Later in past afternoon we came back and explored the junction Govind Nagar (Beach #3), the main ‘town’ is small and has a handful of shops and local dhabas (Eateries), we had dinner in one of the dhabas, tried some exciting varieties of seafood and the day concluded.

  • Excursion to Elephant Beach is dependent on weather conditions, so keep your alternate plan ready, if this has been canceled.
  • You can carry an extra pair of clothes for snorkeling, there are changing rooms available.
  • It is advisable to pack your food and water if you are planning to stay for a longer time at Elephant Beach. There are limited or I would say no options to drink and eat.

Day 5: Leisure day, beach hopping & roaming around the Havelock Island

This day is devoted to your likings and preferences, ask yourself what your heart wants to do, and just go with the flow, and enjoy your freedom, the entire island is waiting outside for you.

We wanted to explore the island with no plan, no schedule, and no restrictions, just wanted to wander around the island on the bike.

So, it was a peaceful morning for us, we started slow, enjoyed our morning breakfast sitting on our private balcony, breathing in the fresh air, hearing gusts and leaves listening to chirping birds, roaming around our villa, exploring our resort, clicking some pictures and videos.

Silver Spring Resort, Havelock Island

Later, we rented a motorbike (Honda Activa) for INR 400/day from our hotel and hit the road. It was a beautiful sunny day, roads were mostly empty and protected by big trees on both sides, playing hide and seek with the sun, you’ll observe old-fashioned wooden houses, Nicobari huts surrounded by arrays of betel nut trees, palm trees, coconut trees, and other tropical rain forest sited all around.

You will just fall in love with the slow & relaxed vibes of the town, which we often miss in our urban city lives.

Bike rentals in Havelock Island

Kala Pathar Beach gets its name from Kala Pathar village and also due to the Black Rocks that enhance the coastline.

We loved spending relaxing time here, it has some virgin spots, and you will feel like you are on some private unspoiled beach where you can lie down, chill on hammocks, go swimming, collect shells, and corals & decorate your sandcastle.

It’s a perfect place for newly married couples who seek privacy and a lone blissful WE time.

Making Sandcastle on Kala Pathar Beach

If you haven’t performed scuba diving in Port Blair, then you have a chance to experience it here in Havelock Island & instead of beach hopping, you may go for Scuba from one of the certified dive centers (Barefoot, Dive India, etc.)

Those who love adventures like trekking in the rainforest jungle or some of you may be interested in fishing trips, which can be organized by Wild Orchid Resort , Barefoot , Emerald Gecko Resort , etc. Just enjoy your day as per your choices at your own pace!

For lunch and dinner, you can try several options from budgeted restaurants in the Govind Nagar area to mid-range restaurants like Emerald Gecko to expensive and better-quality restaurants like Red Snapper at Wild Orchid Resort, where they served cocktails & alcohol, seafood platters from fresh fish selections, right from Tuna Steak, Lobsters, Tiger Prawns all are freshly available. The food and the ambiance are amazing, it’s a little expensive though. That’s how you can spend your Day 5 in Havelock Island.

Day 6: Return to Port Blair, explore the city, visit museums, shopping in Aberdeen Bazar

Renowned as the heaven for adventurers, trekkers, nature lovers, foodies, and honeymooners, Havelock Island manages to maintain its charm that is 100 percent tourist-friendly. It’s now the time to say bye to Havelock Island with a promise to come back again…

We checked out from Silver Spring Resort and came back to Port Blair by Makruzz in the morning. After checking in to the same J Hotel in Port Blair, we decided to visit museums in Port Blair – Zonal Anthropological Museum and Naval Marine Museum (Samudrika) comprises the city tour.

It’s a wise decision to spend afternoon time exploring museums to stay indoors and it will keep you busy in exploration.

Naval Marine Museum (Samudrika), Port Blair

Zonal Anthropological Museum is just a 2 min drive from our hotel, and from there Samudrika Naval Marine Museum is a 5 min drive away.

You will get the opportunity to learn and understand the tribal life in Andaman and Nicobar Islands through the museums. Spend an hour or less depending upon your interests. Also, visit adjoining souvenir shop to buy the collectibles.

The other one, the Naval Marine Museum often called Samudrika, run by the Indian Navy, has a collection of unique varieties of corals, seashells, and some species of fishes to educate various aspects of marine life underwater. Both are recommended for curious-minded people.

Naval Marine Museum, Port Blair

Later in the evening, we were roaming in and around Aberdeen Bazar for shopping. Aberdeen Bazaar is a famous marketplace in the heart of Port Blair city, where you will find not only groceries, vegetables, fruits, spices, ornaments, clothes, and souvenirs but also it is a hub of various shops like ATM, telephone, internet cafe, restaurants, lodging, travel booking companies, etc.

Do not forget to take souvenirs back home. If you find souvenirs expensive in some shops, I recommend ‘Andaman and Nicobar Emporium – Sagarika’, a government-aided store where you will find them at reasonable rates. That’s how we spent our Day 6 exploring the city, shopping, and of course, eating local delicacies.

Day 7: Mount Harriet National Park, Chatham Island & Chidiya Tapu

It’s Day 7 in the Andaman Islands, and there are still some interesting attractions to visit. After heavy breakfast, we came to the Chatham ferry jetty located on Chatham Island by car (You can take a taxi/auto) to board a huge ferry boat. You’ll really enjoy this ferry boat ride of 10-15 min, which takes you to Bambooflat ferry jetty, capable of carrying motorbikes, and cars along with people is a great way of local transportation here.

Ferry to Bambooflat

You need to hire a jeep from Bambooflat jetty to Mt. Harriet National Park, a 5.1 km road that passes through the lush tropical forest. During the journey, your driver will show you the place from where the picture of the old Indian 20 Rs. currency note was taken.

It’s the third highest peak in the A & N archipelago, offering great views of coastal terrain from their watchtowers, you will get the view of North Bay & Ross Islands from an Emerald viewpoint.

Butterfly Garden at Mount Harriet National Park

It is a home for a variety of butterflies and one of the famous trekking spots. The trail begins from Mount Harriet and ends at Madhuban offering sights of exotic plants, wild birds & animals, and butterflies along the way.

There is a hiking opportunity at Chidiya Tapu as well, famous for bird watching. For those who are interested, I would recommend taking a guided trekking tour or traveling in groups for the safer side. We did not go trekking, because it requires more relax-time, and we have other plans for the day.

Chatham Saw Mill at Chatham Island

After returning to Chatham Island by the same ferry, we went to see Chatham Saw Mill, one of the oldest & largest in Asia, was set up in 1883 and is still running to fulfil the requirements of saw and timber for construction on the island.

It will be an informative tour of an hour or less, where you learn about the types of woods available on the island, and its processing, cutting & shaping techniques as per the requirements. The museum displays some wooden artifacts which demonstrate the skill of local people.

One can visit the other attractions of Chatham Island, Japanese War Bunker of Second World War & Forest Museum located near the Chatham Saw Mill if you have enough time.

Chidiya Tapu

We ended our Andaman journey with Chidiya Tapu, which is 30 km from Chatham Island, and to reach here you need to cross the entire Port Blair City.

This beach is undeniably beautiful and famous for its spectacular sunsets. As I said earlier it is famous for birding and that’s why they call it ‘Chidiya Tapu- The translation in English is Birds Island’.

It is far from Port Blair city and neglected by many tourists, a less commercial place with no water sports, no restaurants & other amenities, which anyway is good for the environment, as a result, you’ll find this beach is so clean and serene.

Chidiya Tapu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands

People come here in the evening to see the sun setting down beyond the hills of Neighboring Rutland Island, while the reflection of bright yellow lights on clean and calm water offers the perfect background for sunset photography.

We love the vibes of the beach, it is different than the other beaches, where the water is crystal clear and calm with no waves. The sudden change of landscape from a golden sandy beach to huge lush green trees on the shorelines certainly soothes your mind and soul and makes a perfect end to the beautiful island story.

Day 8: Time to say - ‘Bye and See You Again’

We checked out from J Hotel after breakfast. We were happy to manage a window seat while going back and enjoyed the extreme beauty of the Andaman Islands from the sky, bringing back unforgettable memories of the Island that we are going to cherish for a lifetime.

So, when are you planning for Andamans? or have you already been to this magical place? Whatever it be, on your next trip to Andaman, do not forget to include the aforementioned places on your travel itinerary.

My trip to the andaman islands [5 days itinerary].

Solo Trip To The Andaman Islands

I made an adventurous and memorable solo travel to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the monsoon season. My main focus was to visit islands and beaches during this trip. It was mainly a 5 days trip to South Andaman from Dhaka, Bangladesh . Though it is much hectic to travel a long way to reach after visiting I must say it was the worthy one. There are many top places to visit in the Andaman Islands . And surely I’ll revisit. So here are the details of my trip to the Andaman Islands to help you to plan your trip or tour to this dream destination. And yes, this time also I’ve learned and experienced many new things while traveling solo. Hence you got to read the complete post to know the inside story and many tips as well. 🙂

Some Basics About The Andaman and Nicobar Islands

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are in East India and Port Blair is the capital. Andaman has gone through many tragic times from the British colonization to the tsunami in 2004 but still standing with the  spirit of  confidence . Really there are much to inspire you to visit the Andaman Islands . The captivated beauty of Andaman attracts many tourists every year. This destination is best for adventure travel and must-visit for all nature lovers. In fact, who does not love white sandy beaches with blue water? The best part is that all the beaches are pristine and naturally beautiful. And scuba diving is the must-do activity in the Andaman Islands.

English and Hindi are the official languages in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Bengali, Tamil, and Telugu are the major spoken languages. You’ll find many Bengalis are settled here and their origin is Bangladesh. Most tourists are Bengalis and Tamils from West Bengal and Chennai. The tribals are out of the focus. They are completely different and not available in the populated destinations. Tourists are not allowed to talk and visit them unless permitted by the authorities of the Andaman Government.

When To Visit the Andaman Islands?

The temperature and climate of the Andaman Islands are best for traveling in almost every season. Only during monsoon (June – August) rains excessively and this is the offseason, you’ll find some destinations closed for safety reasons. September to April is the peak season and became overcrowded by tourists. Therefore the beginning of the monsoon in the month of May is the best time to visit the Andaman Islands. To avoid the crowd and enjoy the extreme natural beauty of the Andaman Islands consider to visit in between May and June. There is no winter in the Andaman Islands.

The Andaman Islands 5 Days Itinerary

Port Blair, Hotel GB Oceania, Corbyn’s Cove Beach

Get in Port Blair And…

Whether by air or ship you can reach the main city, Port Blair. It is only possible to travel directly to the Andaman Islands from Kolkata , and Chennai. Government ships operate weekly 3 days and you have to book tickets from those cities or details you can find from Andaman and Nicobar Tourism site. Current airlines those operate to reach Port Blair are Spice Jet, Go Air, and Air India. And it takes 2 hours from Kolkata to reach in the Veer Savarkar International Airport, Port Blair.

Unfortunately, I got a very bad experience and my flights were delayed total 4 hours from Dhaka and Kolkata too. So I’ve reached Port Blair airport in the afternoon (after 3 pm) though I supposed to be by 1 pm Indian time. And one more thing must pre-order your food while collecting your air ticket if you’re flying by Spice Jet. I didn’t know that and 20% extra I paid for one Chicken Roll as bought from the airplane. To save money it is better to carry dry food and water or eat from the outside before taking off the flight.

After collecting my luggage, I directly went to Hotel GB Oceania by tourist AC car from Andaman Travels. And in my entire Port Blair tour, I was guided by Gopi Driver.

Here I made one mistake and came back to the airport again to take the permit paper. So here it is, you got to learn from your mistakes and you’ll definitely remember it.

I wanted to visit the historic Cellular Jail on the first day but couldn’t for the timings. In the evening went to visit Corbyn’s Cove Beach. At 5 pm only it became very dark and nothing but enjoyed walking and the waves sound on the beach. It was drizzling too. I found some local stalls outside of the beach selling many fancy things mainly made out of sea shell and wood.

GB Oceania is a 3-star hotel and located in the center of Port Blair. The modern interior design of this hotel is cool and the room is well-furnished too. This hotel is just 2.6 km from the airport and all the main tourist attractions are nearby only. Breakfast and dinner were complimentary from the Hotel GB Oceania restaurant. In every restaurant in the Andaman Islands, you’ll find mainly South Indian food. It is because here most tourists are from South India.

Here in Port Blair within 9 pm all shops, markets, and all activities do close. The city is normally safe to travel and I found locals are helpful and cooperative. And all kinds of transport facility are there but two-wheelers are more. There are many hotels and restaurants in many ranges and budgets in the city. Many mobile networks do operate in the Andaman Islands but Internet speed is not faster, much expensive, and not available everywhere.

So, it depends on your time, schedule, and interest on the FIRST DAY you can visit Cellular Jail, Light and Sound Show at Cellular Jail, and Corbyn’s Cove Beach. Even you can move around nearby in the city.

  • All foreign tourists must collect permit paper from the Immigration section at Port Blair airport. Otherwise, you’ll not be allowed to stay at any hotels and visit any places.
  • Must carry your Passport, Permit Paper, and Identity Card (for Indians) wherever you visit in the Andaman Islands.
  • Go through the permit paper where every necessary detail you’ll find to help you travel safely in the Andaman Islands.
  • Must return your permit paper after collecting air ticket while leaving Andaman after your trip.

Makruzz, Havelock Island, Ocean Blue Resort, Vijaynagar Beach, Radhanagar Beach

Get in Havelock Island

Next day after an early breakfast started to leave for Havelock Island , the main attraction in the entire Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Presently the only way to reach Havelock Island from Port Blair is the ferry. There are some private cruises and government ferries to reach you to the Havelock Island. You can book respective ferry tickets from the ferry office in the Port Blair harbor. In fact in the Andaman Islands, you can visit various islands by the ferry service and this is the best way to hop from one island to another island.

I traveled by Makruzz, private cruise in a deluxe class. There are three classes (Premium, Deluxe, and Royal). It costs me 1150 Rs per ticket. It was a very pleasant experience, very good service, cooperative crews and safe too. You’ll get a complimentary meal too during your journey. It took just one and half hours to reach Havelock Ferry Ghat.

How beautiful is Havelock I understood from the ferry ghat itself, it is actually the beach no. 1. There are many top beaches in Havelock Island and many water activities are must do things here. In the morning at 9:45 am I’ve reached Ocean Blue Resort in Havelock Island by another Tourist Car service. There are many resorts and also budget hotels in Havelock but it is best to stay beside any beach though it’ll be a bit expensive.

I completely loved my 2 nights stay at Ocean Blue Resort. This resort is very close to the Vijaynagar beach and so I chose to stay here. Breakfast and dinner were complimentary from this resort. The room is well decorated with all necessary things. What I loved most is the beautiful garden of many colorful flowers of this resort.

Just before lunch made my first visit to Vijaynagar beach (Beach no. 5). This was an awesome experience and such a picturesque beach it is! I loved the greenish-blue watercolor of this beach and there are many Mahua and Coconut trees. And spending some moments here was blissful.

Mahua Trees at Vijayanagar Beach

There are some restaurants nearby Ocean Blue Resort. Best to try seafood here. I took plain Paratha and Tuna fish curry for lunch from Nadav’s Place. This restaurant runs by Ocean Blue Resort and Blue Bird Resort. And food is too pricey here though tasty.

And afternoon went to visit Asia’s famous Radhanagar Beach (Beach no. 7). Radhanagar beach is the main attraction among tourists in Havelock Island and became popular worldwide in 2004. It listed as Asia’s Best Beach by the Time magazine.

Top 100 Beaches in the World - Radhanagar Beach

Now Radhanagar Beach holds the 64 number among the Top 100 beaches in the world by CNN. This beach is just 10 km from Ocean Blue resort. The sandy beach, blue water, and the sunset moments can be your lifetime experience. Here outside the beach, you’ll get many local shops selling local fresh fruits and coconut water but all are pricey comparatively other beaches on Havelock Island.

The Sunset Hour in the Radhanagar Beach

The second day you can visit Radhanagar Beach, Vijaynagar beach, and Govindnagar beach (Beach no. 3) also if it is near to your resort. And must try Sea Food at Red Snappers, best in Havelock Island.

Havelock Island, Vijaynagar Beach, Scuba Dive, Kalapathar Beach, Nadav’s Place

I started my second day with a long walk at the Vijaynagar Beach in Havelock Island. The sky was unclear, I wanted to see the sunrise but couldn’t rather enjoy the calmness and serenity of this beach. I photographed a lot here. I met one Telegu family here who stayed in the same resort and found many came for a morning walk. Just opposite of this beach is the Dolphin Resort and so this beach seems like a private beach.

The Beauty of the Vijaynagar Beach During Monsoon

I supposed to go to visit the Elephant Beach, best for snorkeling and other water activities. But due to bad weather, this beach was closed for tourists. But by trekking was possible to visit, I didn’t as the road condition was not that good.

Then I decided to go for Scuba Diving at Nemo Reef nearby the Beach no. 2 from Blue Corals Dive. I never thought I can be able to do it but I was super excited and too much happy with the beauty of the underwater world. It was 9.9 meters deep dive for 30 minutes. It costs me 2500 Rs. with photos and videos. How fascinating it was to see many coral reefs, colorful fishes, especially Nemo fish and many unknown sea fishes!

I would never go for scuba diving if Elephant Beach is opened for snorkeling and so it was good for one sense. Those happened happens for good. No problem in my future Andaman tour I’ll not miss visiting Elephant Beach. Hope for the best. 🙂

In the afternoon, it was pleasant and had a nice time at Kalapathar Beach . It just takes 7 to 10 minutes by car to reach this beach from the resort. I found all the beaches here in Havelock well managed by the authorities. All are much aware of cleanliness on the beaches. Here outside the beach, you’ll find many coconut shops and must drink coconut water at less price (just 15 Rs.) per coconut but fresh and sweet water.

Turquoise waters of Kalapathar beach

My last dinner at Nadav’s Place in Havelock Island became a sweet memory with the local sweets (Rasgulla) and it was truly tasty.

The third day must try scuba diving nearby from the reputed dive school. Elephant beach is the must-visit destination for the whole day. Neither you should miss visiting Kalapathar Beach. It depends on your choices and the nature of your trip.

  • Havelock Island is pristine, beautiful, and remote land but safe to travel alone or in a group. Here internet speed is too slow than Port Blair.
  • After the evening, it is safe not to stay on any beach and sometimes not permitted by the beach authorities unless any activities made by the respective resorts nearby the beach in Havelock Island.
  • Must concern about safety while going for any water activities on the island and beaches. I always listen to my instinct while traveling solo and it works well.

Port Blair, Cellular Jail, Corbyn’s Cove Beach, Munda Pahar Beach, Hotel GB Oceania

Back to Port Blair

On the fourth day after a breakfast, I checked out from Ocean Blue Resort and came back Port Blair by Makruzz.

I collected the ticket from the ferry ghat office which was already booked. I reached Port Blair before 1 pm and decided to visit Cellular Jail. But before that went shopping at the Sagarekha Emporium. There were many rare collections of artistic sea shell and wood crafts. You can buy for home decorations or as gift items.

It was worth to visit Kala Pani or Cellular Jail which established between 1896 – 1906. Cellular Jail has been used by the British to deport political prisoners to the remote Andaman Sea. A must-visit destination to know the history of the Andaman Islands. Here you’ve to collect ticket (30 Rs. per person) before entering and you can also take Guide with you. I explored alone on every floor and there are many museums to visit.

Cellular Jail is now represented as National Memorial Monument. It was amazing to see the remote view of the Andaman from the Tower of the Cellular Jail. You can even see Ross Island, North Bay Island, and the lighthouse from here.

After that, I went to explore Corbyn’s Cove Beach . Here you’ll really love the rows of the long coconut trees and it was beautiful in the daytime. I enjoyed Jet Skiing here, for some minutes it cost 350 Rs. There are other adventurous activities too here like speed boat ride, banana ride, and sofa ride. There is one island here, known as Snake Island.

My South Andaman trip over with a visit to Munda Pahar Beach nearby Chidiyatapu. It was thrilling to reach Munda Pahar while saw many long green trees both the side of the road. There are various trees in the Munda Pahar Beach. Many uprooted trees created an extra beauty entire the beach. Just before sunset, it was amazing and this place was very windy too.

Munda Pahar Beach

I wanted to go for a Light and Sound show at the Cellular Jail in the evening. But there was a long queue and could not manage the ticket. After the evening, there was one show for 1 hour but didn’t feel to go for it as it will be late and I was too exhausted. Actually, I wanted to go for it on the first day but schedule changed for the delay of the flights and that day this show was close to the public due to some VIP guests.

At night, I enjoyed a buffet dinner at the Hotel GB Oceania restaurant. I slept early as next day will leave Port Blair for Dhaka.

The fourth day you can even visit Ross Island, North Bay Island those are very near to the city. North Bay Island is also best for Scuba Diving, Sea Walk, and Glass Bottom Boat Ride.

Last day in the Andaman Islands…

I checked out from Hotel GB Oceania after breakfast. I was happy to manage a window seat while coming back and enjoyed the extreme beauty of the Andaman Islands from the sky.

The total Port Blair airport area is No Photography zone. Before taking off I took some photos but later came to know it is better not to put the airport photos online. It is a defense airfield and has strategic importance to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Back To Dhaka

My whole trip to the Andaman Islands was interesting and enjoyable besides the boring time for the delay flights in Kolkata. Literally, I’ve reached Dhaka on 02 June. It was 2 hours late for Biman Airlines. So I had reached home after 12 am. Thankfully I could be able to manage Green Bangla Taxi Cab service from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka. Their service was really good and it was safe too. Furthermore, it really needs guts while traveling solo but every new experience teaches me new lessons. In the end, I’m the happiest to collect memories, not things by traveling. 🙂

However, the first visit will not let you explore everything due to time and many circumstances. And I believe every place should be visited many times to explore the best way. Therefore I’m hoping to visit again the magical Andaman Islands!

Andaman Itinerary For 6 Days

  • April 24, 2022

The far-flung archipelago of Andaman & Nicobar Islands consists of 572 islands, out of which only 37 are inhabited. The islands of Nicobar are off-limits to tourists, and we can only visit a few islands in Andaman. Located in the Bay of Bengal off the eastern coast of India , the Andaman Islands are a sight to behold. Sun-kissed beaches, azure waters, exhilarating water activities, intriguing history, and abundant natural beauty are just a few of the reasons to visit this tropical paradise. Additional attractions include spectacular sunsets, limestone caves, mangrove rainforests, and abundant marine life. In fact, it is an excellent destination for scuba divers and snorkelers as it is home to a plethora of vibrant coral and exotic marine life. This itinerary will take you through the most inhabited and exciting areas of the Andaman Islands.

Suggested Andaman Itinerary for 6 Days

Day 1 of andaman itinerary: port blair.

The only way to get to the remote islands is to fly into Port Blair. Direct flights are available from Delhi , Kolkata, Mumbai , and Chennai to Veer Sarvankar International Airport in Port Blair. Check the flights and connectivity before planning your vacation, as the timetable changes randomly. In Port Blair, there isn’t much to do. However, Cellular jail should be on your agenda. The Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, was a colonial prison that housed several prominent Indian freedom fighters. The horrifying stories of brutality and depravity are sure to have a sobering effect. There is also a light and sound show in the evening (6 pm-7 pm). If you have time left, you can go to the coconut palm-fringed Corbyn Beach and watch a scenic sunset. Enjoy a leisurely meal and spend the night in Port Blair.

andaman solo trip

Day 2 of Andaman Itinerary: Havelock and Radhanagar Beach

To get to Havelock (Swaraj Deep Island), you can use a seaplane, a government-operated ferry, or a private ferry. Choose Markuzz Ferries for your ferry transfer since they are spacious and comfortable Catamarans. They offer air conditioning, nice seats, clean restrooms, and a small snack bar. The trip will take about 1.5 hours and will cost close to Rs1400 ($20) one way. If you can’t get tickets in Markuzz, you’ll have to use Green Ocean Ferries, Aashi, Sea Link, or government-operated boats, which are cheaper but have subpar facilities and may take longer.

During this trip, we plan to spend as much time as possible on Havelock Island, which is noted for its clean beaches , lush green forests, and rich underwater treasure. Take the morning ferry (departs from Haddo Jetty) to Havelock and get off at Swaraj Deep Jetty. To get to your hotel, you’ll need to take a taxi/auto from there. Check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day at Radhanagar Beach. The secluded beach is located on the western coast of Havelock Island. The Radhanagar Beach (Beach 7) is ranked among Asia’s top ten most gorgeous beaches, and you’ll see why when you visit. The crescent-shaped beach spans 2 kilometers and has an average width of 30 to 40 meters.  Velvety sand, excellent waves, emerald waters, picturesque sunset, and scarce crowds make this beach a perfect place to relax and enjoy. There are no water sports on the beach. Taj Exotica Resort & Spa is a 1-minute walk from the famed beach. If you can afford the upscale resort, go for it.

andaman solo trip

Day 3 of Andaman Itinerary: Elephant Beach, Havelock

Today we are going to visit Elephant Beach. A small cruise boat will take you to Elephant Beach from the Swaraj Deep Jetty in less than 30 minutes. The round-trip ferry would cost Rs1000 ($14) per person. It leaves you there for three hours, and you are free to do whatever you choose during that time. The same jetty will bring you back after the allotted time.  Another way to reach Elephant Beach is by trekking. The trail begins at the Forest Camp, which is located 8 kilometers from the jetty. Because the trail runs through dense rainforests, it is recommended that you bring an escort with you on the one-hour trek. You can get a guide for 500 rupees (USD 8). The guide will accompany you to Elephant Beach, assist you while you are there, and bring you back to the Forest Camp. Keep in mind that if you go trekking, you must return the same way you came. You will not be able to go back on the ferry.

Havelock’s Elephant Beach is a great place to go snorkeling. The crystal-clear water, rich coral reef formations, and amazing marine life near the coast provide for an unforgettable snorkeling experience. You’re going to have the time of your life if you love water activities. There’s Jet skiing, banana boats, an underwater sea walk, parasailing, and a slew of other water activities. Except for snorkeling (Rs1500) and parasailing (Rs3250), most of the activities cost Rs600. Elephant Beach is quite crowded and extensively commercialized. If you are not interested in water sports, you can skip going there and spend the day at other beaches such as Beach 2, 3, and 7. The last boat leaves Elephant Beach by 3 p.m. The rest of the day is free to do whatever you choose. If you’re in the mood to venture out again, Beach 2 and 3 have some nice restaurants and beach shacks.

PS: If you want to do scuba diving in Havelock, arrange a morning excursion so you can return in time to explore Elephant Beach. Scuba diving will take around two hours to complete. The diving establishments are located at Govindnagar Beach No. 2, which is quite close to the Jetty. Remember that the last ferry to Elephant Beach departs from the jetty at noon and make your plans accordingly. You’ll have a long day ahead of you, but scuba diving in Havelock is highly recommended.

andaman solo trip

Day 4 of Andaman Itinerary:  Neil Island

Today we are going to leave for Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep). The Markuzz ferry from Havelock Jetty to Neil Island Jetty leaves at 10 a.m. and takes one hour. Neil Island is smaller than Havelock and has laid-back vibes. The island was inhabited only in the 1960s and has been slowly rising on the popularity charts due to its unexplored coral reefs, picturesque beaches, amazing biodiversity, and lush forests. There are three main beaches in Neil Islands – Sitapur Beach, Bharatpur Beach, and Laxmanpur Beach. Nestled between tropical forests and clear turquoise seas, the beaches look spectacular. Each one of them has its charm.

The sea around Bharatpur Beach is full of corals and schools of fish. It is the only place in the Neil Islands where you can enjoy water sports. However, snorkeling and scuba diving can be enjoyed on all three beaches. Sitapur Beach is also called “Sunrise Beach” as it offers spectacular sunrise views in the morning. The beach is known for its limestone formations. Laxmanpur Beach is a broad spur of white shell sand and you can find an abundance of corals and shells in the shallow, clear waters. The Natural Bridge, also called Howrah Bridge by the locals, is the highlight of Laxmanpur Beach. The bridge is made of natural rock formations. Most of the resorts on Neil Island are located on Bharatpur Beach. Stay overnight on Neil Island.

PS: You can go to Kalapathar Beach early in the morning before leaving for Neil Island to see a breathtaking sunrise. The beach is located on the southern side of Havelock and is approximately 6.5 kilometers from the jetty. It is easily accessible by car, taxi, or bike.

Day 5 of Andaman Itinerary: Port Blair and Ross Island

It is now time to return to Port Blair. The Markuzz Ferry, which runs from Neil to Port Blair, departs at 11:30 a.m. and takes one hour. On reaching Port Blair, we are going to visit Ross Island. The tiny island is only a kilometer from Port Blair and is easily accessible through a 15-minute boat ride from the Aberdeen jetty. The island closes at 3 p.m. for day visitors, so plan. You can still visit the island if you don’t get there in time for the last boat. Ferries depart at 4 p.m. for the light and sound display, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased three days in advance. Ross Island is closed on Wednesdays.

For nearly a century, Ross Island served as the administrative headquarters for the Indian Penal Settlement. It had all the modern comforts procured by the Britishers until an earthquake struck the island in 1942. The ruins of a church, a bakery, a museum, a jail, a cemetery, and several other structures are scattered all over the island. Ross Island (recently named Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island) exudes a rustic and one-of-a-kind charm.  What impresses you the most is the myriad flora and fauna that can be found on the serene island. It is home to deer, peacocks, and a variety of other birds. The trees have reclaimed the island and wrapped their roots around the crumbling ruins, creating an eerie and intriguing sight. There are no cars allowed on the island, but you can explore the island in a golf cart if you don’t want to walk. Return to Port Blair for dinner and a night’s stay.

Day 6 of Andaman Itinerary: Fly Back

The flight to your next destination would most likely depart in the morning. Pack your belongings and head to the airport. It’s time to say goodbye to the Andamans.

PS: If you have an extra day, you can plan a visit to Baratang Island. However, be prepared for a long and exhausting day. I felt that it was not worth going to Baratang Island.

Things to know before visiting Andamans

  • The best time to visit Andamans is between November and March. The months of April and May can be quite warm, particularly in the afternoons. The weather begins to heat up and become humid in the following months. Monsoon is from June to September , so avoiding that season is better. March to June – 22°C to 33°C, June to September – 27°C to 30°C, October to Feb – 20°C to 30°C
  • Although the islands are in the same time zone as Bangkok, they follow Indian Standard Time. As a result, the day begins very early. Go to bed on time so that you can wake up early to make the most of the light.
  • Ferries must be reserved in advance because they are the sole way to travel between islands. All your carefully laid-out plans will go haywire if you can’t find a suitable ferry.
  • Only private ferries can be booked online and in advance. Government ferry tickets can only be purchased at the counter two days before the trip.
  • Boarding closes approximately 20 minutes before departure. Before that, you have to get your luggage scanned and your tickets verified.
  • Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, caps, an umbrella, flip-flops, a swimsuit, cover-ups, and mosquito repellent with you.
  • The locals are straightforward, honest, and trustworthy.

Andaman Itinerary

  • Getting vegetarian food is not a problem in Andamans.
  • The mobile network is extremely patchy, with no connectivity on smaller islands. For a stable connection, you need to rely on the hotel’s WIFI. The WIFI is sometimes only accessible in the hotel’s lobby.
  • Big hotels accept cards, but you’ll need cash for cabs, small eateries, tickets, and a variety of other small transactions. Payments with Digital Wallets are also accepted in many places.
  • Although there is no Uber or Ola in the Andamans, taxis are easily available. They usually have a set fare for each route and don’t bargain much. You will be offered package deals by most of the taxi drivers you come across.
  • Auto rickshaws are easily accessible on all Andaman Islands. Because the distances are short, it makes sense to choose this less expensive method of transportation.
  • Most beaches close at 5 p.m., and this is strictly enforced by the lifeguards patrolling the beaches.
  • If you are daring enough to kayak through the mangroves at night in Havelock, you will be able to view the bioluminescent plankton that makes the water shimmer every time the paddle dips in the water. The waters are said to be home to a few crocodiles, so go at your own risk.
  • Foreign visitors to the Andaman Islands are no longer required to get a “Restricted Area Permit” as of July 2018. Foreign visitors with a valid Indian tourist visa can now visit the Andaman Islands and stay for the duration of their visa.
  • Onge, Jarawa, Sentinelese, and Andamanese are the four tribes that live on Andaman. They can be fiercely hostile. Do not make interaction with tribals. It is strictly prohibited by the Indian government and is a punishable offense. This is the most effective way to cut off them from the modern world and allow them to carry on with their age-old traditions.

The guide includes in-depth details on each island, best water sport activities, food, transport and other useful tips.

If you have 7 days in hand…

Spend the first 3 days in port blair, day 1 - land in port blair.

🕕 1:00 pm - Check-in to your hotel Andaman has its international airport located in Port Blair. Your check-in would generally be in the afternoon. Have lunch, relax for a while and head right out.

🕕 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm - Cellular Jail A gruesome colonial prison with 696 isolated cells, designed by the Britishers, to punish Indian Independence activists. Explore the complete jail.

🕕 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm- Cellular Jail Light and sound show narrating and showcasing the trials and tribulations of the inmates.

🕕 8:30 pm - 10:00 pm - Dinner Fortune Resort Restaurant and The New Lighthouse Restaurant are good options.

🕕 10:00 pm - 1:00 pm - Corbyn Cove’s Beach Relax, stroll around, take in the breath-taking views in this crescent shaped coconut palm-fringed beach. Enjoy a drink and lunch at one of quaint beachside restaurants - Alto Espirito is a good option.

🕕 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm - Chidiya Tapu Beach Offers the best sunset view in Andaman. Has a mini-zoo as well!

🕕 9:30 pm - Dinner If you are in the mood to sing your heart out then Feel Good Restaurant & Karaoke Night would be a good option to try. Don’t keep your expectations too high though!

Day 3 - Juolly and Red Skin Islands (Water sports day baby!)

Today we explore some spectacular islands towards the south of Port Blair. These islands are part of the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Reserve and hence the underwater life here is very well conserved and is sure to make your jaw drop.

🕕 10:00 pm - 1:00 pm - Wandoor Beach Starting point of entry to the Juolly and Red Skin Islands.

🕕 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm - Juolly Beach Island First, have some yummy lunch from the shacks. Take a leisure walk to the forests and sunbathe on the sands. Underwater view here is terrific. GO crazy snorkeling, scuba diving all you want!

🕕 4:30 pm - 8:00 pm - Red skin Island Juolly’s twin! Drown in its sheer beauty. Yet another brilliant island with a terrific underwater view. Snorkel, scuba dive - do it all!

Day 4 - Day Trip to Baratang Island

🕕 10:00 pm - 1:00 pm - Baratang Drive from Port Blair to Baratang island. Have lunch.

🕕 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm - Limestone Caves A 20 minute boat ride takes you through the most dense and dreamy mangrove creeks to the naturally formed limestone caves, lined with stalactites and stalagmites that has held the secrets of this great island for years!

🕕 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm - Mud Volcano An eruption effect created when natural gases emitted by decaying organic matter underground pushes mud upwards

🕕 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm - Drive back to Port Blair and enjoy dinner/nightlife at Pink Fly lounge.

If you are not interested to travel to Baratang Island, another good option for a day trip from Port Blair would be North Bay Island . It offers some exclusive water rides like a Coral Safari Semi Submarine Ride and Glass Boats - these would be good water activities for a family where some members are scared to get into water, but still want to enjoy under water life!

Day 5 - Havelock Islands (Elephant Beach, Kalapathar Beach & Nightlife)

🕕 6:00 am - 9:00 am - Check-in to your hotel Take a ferry from Phoenix Bay jetty. There are 3 slots to pick from - 6:00 am, 11:30 am and 2:00 pm. The ride would take about 3 hours. Freshen up, have breakfast and head out!

🕕 10:00 pm - 1:30 pm - Radhanagar Beach Relax, sun-tan and take long walks. Have lunch at Turtle House.

🕕 3:00 pm - 8:30 pm - Vijayanagar Beach Shallow waters and one can practically walk into the sea. Water is so clear that you can see the surface below. This place offers spectacular photo ops - a boat hooked to a bench, a tire hung to a tree! This beach has some of the best restaurants of Havelock Islands located close by - Fat Martin, Venom Bar are some good options to explore.

Day 7 - Neil Islands

Make sure to book your ferry ticket from Havelock to Neil islands at least 2 days in advance. Private ferry tickets can be booked online (make sure you book these prior to booking your hotel). Govt. ferry tickets are cheaper and have to be booked at least 2 days in advance from the ticket station. Ferry rides are limited and the demand is huge! High chances that you may not find a ticket if you try to book on the same day that you plan to travel.

🕕 10:00 am - 11:00 am - Check-in to your hotel

🕕 11:30 am - 1:30 pm - Laxmanpur Beach No. 1 and 2 Its natural bridge formation called the ‘Howrah Bridge’ is a popular tourist attraction. Enjoy the plethora of water sport options available here. Have lunch at either Ripon Seafood or Dugong Restaurant.

The Andaman Islands are indeed the perfect destination for solo travel ! A calm and Peaceful Environment, tranquillity of blue waters, with greenery all around and wildlife to explore, it certainly provides the perfect setting for self-discovery. As a great poet once said about his love for nature, “The spirit will rise while you go asleep! You will be washed by the Spring of Life! When you get lost in the beauty of nature, you will grow very close to yourself!”

Natural Beauty certainly affects you like no other! It soothes you from within! It is why we plan solo vacations to take a break from stressful situations. Family outings refresh you, but sometimes you just need to be alone. You need some time to spend only with yourself! You need to meditate and do some self-exploration.

The Andaman Islands are the ideal set-up for soul searching! It is an archipelago of 572 beautiful islands, but only 9 islands are open for tourists. Though it is a popular tourist destination, one can find some very beautiful unexplored spots where one can think and enjoy the company of solitude!

So dear friend, close your eyes and see the magic unfold! With the 360-degree breathtaking view of shining blue waters and gleaming white sand surrounded by dense green Tropical forests, you get lost in the picturesque scene! It is the beauty of a solo trip ! You will not be alone, you know! Try to feel it! You will feel the cool breeze walking hand in hand with you!

It is at this time you forget everything and hear just the whispering of the waves! You can feel everything and observe everything as differently as you can without anybody disturbing your soliloquy! You can see the love affair of the white sand with the blue waters, the beauty of silence in the rainforests, and the kaleidoscopic world of the coral reefs down under!  It is an experience to treasure safely in your heart!

Port Blair: The Veritable Garden of Eden!

Indeed, Port Blair is where you would reach to begin your tryst with adventure. It is the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and rightly called the ‘Veritable Garden of Edens’! Here you will get the first glimpse of the pristine glory! If you have not seen an island before, this is the place.

Clean Beaches with blue waters render a delightful streak down your heart! The hotels are clean and hygienic complete with all basic amenities. The hotel staff is humble and helpful. So even your family can be tension-free about your Andaman solo trip !

If you wish to seep in the beauty of the beaches, Ross Island and North Bay are less than 5 km from Port Blair. Ross Island has its name carved in History for having the remains of the oldest colony of British India, the Penal Colony! So you can get a feel of that era! If you are yearning for some nature lovers, you can sail away to the beautiful North Bay.

Here you can get the sight of the coral reefs! The marine life underwater is also a joy to watch! If you are getting homesick, it is a great way to change your mood!

Hmmm! Feeling hungry? You can enjoy a multi-cuisine meal at Port Blair. However, understandably seafood dominates the menu. You can enjoy mouth-watering lobsters and prawns, and the all-popular dessert ‘Royal Falooda’ is a universal favorite! You have Aberdeen Bazaar, a market where you can shop for T.Shirts, Hats, jewelry, and lovable, Souvenirs. However, resist your temptations because you have to reserve your energy, for the real adventure has not begun yet! You have to return to this base, so you can leave some spots untouched for the last sight-seeing, Goodbye Kiss!

The various attractions of Port Blair are: –

  • The Cellular Jail (‘Kala Pani’ of British India)
  • Corbyn Cove Beach (shallow beach with eating joints and shops)
  • Anthropological Museums (information about Local Tribes)

Havelock: The Pride of the Andamans!

Havelock Islands! The most popular tourist destination among all the Andaman Islands, and you cannot miss it for anything! It is no less than bliss for Solo travelers because the stay is economical and the food is also not very expensive. The 73 km journey by sea route is also immensely delightful. The ferry has a cafeteria, AC Rooms, and soulful music! But you know, when you have the alluring scenes of the blue sea, cool breeze blowing, and light music in the background, who needs an enclosed AC room to cover the journey, sleeping?

It is the time when you begin to feel the joy of Independence! It takes about 5 hours or even 2 days to reach Havelock! But when you touch the blissful land, you are spellbound by the alluring beauty!

It is not for nothing that Havelock Island has attained such popularity! It is the haven of pristine beaches like Radhanagar Beach, Kalapathar Beach, and Elephant Beach. Here you can get bikes on rent, and a bicycle ride is the best way to explore the island! This way, you can explore the unexplored also, and who knows, tomorrow, you may be telling the world about it! With glowing blue waters and white sand, Radhanagar Beach is ranked the seventh-best beach in the world!

Water Sports like Scuba Diving and Snorkelling can be one of the most thrilling activities of your life! For this different Andaman tour packages are available at nominal rates! You can witness the mesmerizing world of the coral reefs and the wondrous marine life! It is a great liberating experience!

What makes your heart away is Kalapathar Beach! It is quite far from the town, so it is not crowded! You can do whatever you like on the turquoise blue waters with silver streaks. You can take selfies, stand upside down or run from one end to another without anyone there to stop you! You can freely enjoy this moment to travel alone ! • Coral Reefs
  • Water Sports

Neil Island: The Treasure Island!

The harmony of the white sand, shimmering green sea, and rich green tropical trees leave you speechless! The island has a magnificent variety of flora and fauna, which adds to the beauty of the place! It is where you can give your senses a break and absorb the rich shades of heavenly bliss!

You can sit down and feel the magic around you! You can try water sports like Scuba Diving and Sea Walking here also. And you can never have enough of the vibrant coral reefs! You can continue your bicycle ride here also and explore the amazing villages of the Andaman Islands and learn about the natives out there! The various attractions to see are: –

  • The Bharatpur Beach
  • Laxmanpur Beach
  • The Sitapur Beach
  • Howrah Bridge

Diglipur: Exploring the Unexplored!

Approximately 300 km from Port Blair, Diglipur is the largest town in the Andaman Islands! Being far from the rest of the tourist spots, it has remained untouched by the commercial eye! So here you find a beautiful mix of small-town life and natural beauty! It is another place to spend in peace and get a feel of the culture of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands! You can experience infinite natural spectacles like Swiftlets Nesting, National Parks, and Saltwater Crocodiles!

It is also the location for ‘Alfred Caves’ 41 limestone caves located 20 km from Diglipur. These caves change their color during Monsoon. You have to reach these caves through a dense Mangrove. Not only this, but you can also get an experience for ‘Swiftlets Nesting’! The rare edible nests are also auctioned after the birds leave them!

Saddle Peak: Trekking on the Path of Nature!

The Saddle Peak National Park is another place to feel the joy of single travel ! Have you gone trekking before? If not, this is the moment to experience it! And if you have trekked before, the solitude of the National Park and the rich biodiversity would allure you to climb 732 meters and see the breathtaking visuals of the Andaman Islands from the top!

You can also see the magical view of the rising sun if you set off early! The route is through a forest, but nothing to worry about, it is not dangerous! With rare birds, peacocks, and rabbits, you can experience serene bliss here!

Safety Tips: Enjoy ….but Carefully!

  • Carry your Aadhaar Card or National Identity Certificate with you.
  • Crime rate is low in the Andaman Islands but lock your backpack properly to be secure!
  • Do not take photos inside the Tribal Reserve Areas.
  • Do not stay on the beaches at Night.
  • Learn bargaining, for the auto riders often overcharge.

Conclusion

Single Vacations are perfect to calm down. It gives your stressful nerves much-needed rest. The cluttering in your mind gets cleared, and you are at peace with yourself! The beaches provide the best environment to heal you from within and natural beauty refreshes you. So, Christmas is coming and so is the New Year 2023, pick up your backpack and get set to drench in the splash of love!

No issues! You are entitled to do your solo trip as you wish. Surprisingly, going the entire route alone with only the self to keep you company can be a magical experience.

Do not be scared to land on the beautiful islands of Andaman and Nicobar either when you are determined to go solo. The solo travel not only invigorating your experience but also, it heals your soul and mind. Sure, there are umpteen number of nitty-gritty care women should take care as they embark on the road less traveled, that too alone and fancy free. Here are some tips that can help you in your endeavor. Do consider them and enjoy your solo trip to the fullest. Bon Voyage!

A few tips to make your solo trip great

solo trip

You are going to disembark from your airplane as well as the ship at Port Blair, the capital of the islands. Do not use it as an entry and exit point though. There is plenty to see in the city as well. Do opt for a single day sightseeing tour and visit all the places that matters within your budget.

Make sure to attend the spectacular light and sound show at the Cellular Jail and get a history lesson par excellence. It would truly be worthwhile to hear of the sacrifices made by an entire generation so that we could earn our freedom. It would also be interesting to visit the Anthropological museum here. You would get to an insight into the lives of the tribal people indigenous to the area by the artifacts preserved here. Visiting the Mother Nature is not only soul fulfilling but also, refreshing.

diglipur

Feel free to take a long and leisurely bus trip of 8 hours to arrive at the small town of Diglipur, located on Northern Andaman. You get to pass through the most exciting terrain en route traversing through South and Central parts of the islands to reach its northern tip. It is a serene destination that is perfect for the nature lovers who get to visit the beaches yet to be spoiled by commercialization. You might consider shortening the return trip by raveling by helicopter.

Saddle Peak

Saddle Peak

Go to the other extreme and trek to visit the highest peak on the Andaman Islands that stand tall at 732 meters above the sea level. You will be mesmerized by the amazingly green trail and will find the exertion of going uphill to be a cathartic experience.

However, nothing will prepare you for the most enchanting vision of the entire Northern Andaman lying bare before you from its peak. It is indeed a rewarding sight that should not be missed when you do not have to answer to anyone about deviating from a pre-planned itinerary.

Havelock Island

Havelock Island solo travel

You would do well to book a place in the ferry travelling to the Havelock Islands from Port Blair well in advance. The amazing scenic beauty and the turquoise blue sea amidst the glittering white sand stands out most strikingly competing the beach lovers to name it as the best beach across Asia. Be sure to pick the black pebbles from the Kalapathar beach and try your hand at snorkeling there. The Radhanagar Beach, on the other hand, offers a pleasurable walking experience and watching the golden sun dip below the horizon in the evening is sure to make your solo trip an unforgettable experience.

You might hire scuba diving gear to gaze at the colorful fishes, corals or spy upon a lone octopus resting deep below the shore line. You may want to check upon the dolphins while on Havelock by dropping by the Government owned Dolphin resort. Havelock Island has been renamed as Swaraj Dweep by Prime Minister Modi on the last day of 2018. Be sure to remember its new identity should you want to visit the islands once again in future.

Baratang Islands

Baratang Islands

Spare a day for visiting the magnificent locale of Baratang islands that is known for the most amazing natural marvels. You will not want to miss out on the mud island or the most spectacular volcano formed out of the creamy mud oozing out by the action of natural gases. A tour of the limestone caves will make you come face to face with many wonders and freaks of nature. However, the solitary walk towards the cave through the deep mangrove forest is a riveting experience as well. While you may try your hand at snorkeling and scuba diving near the Baratang Islands as well, the walk under the deep sea is one that attracts numerous tourists hoping to try something truly offbeat and exciting.

A visit to the Parrot Islands nearby cannot be missed either. The animal lovers and bird watchers are enthralled to find thousands of colorful birds such as parrots along with parakeets take to the skies above the island filled with lust green foliage. The birds are known to eat their way through the leaves throughout the evening so that it attains a neatly pruned look. A wondrous act of nature that will leave you spellbound.

The common tourists begin shopping in earnest for pearls and other bric-a-brac on reaching the Andaman Islands. The operators offering the best Andaman holiday packages do, however, advise treading with caution. You, during your solo trip would not have to burden yourself with extra luggage on account of buying everything on sight. Collecting spectacularly bright and colorful sea shells as well bright corals by itself can become the highlight of your solo trip. You may also want to obtain the real taste of life at the Andamans by opting for home stay instead of seeking accommodation in a star hotel that has nothing extraordinary to offer.

Andaman trip planning

Step by step to plan to your perfect Andaman Island trip

Step 1 - identify when are you planning a visit to andaman islands.

The best time to visit Andaman Islands is from September to May. The peak season goes from October - March. During the month of December, the prices are hiked up because lots of travelers plan their vacations during that part of the year.  You can visit the Andaman Islands anytime between September to May. Travelers who want to enjoy the monsoon can visit Andaman during June and July. During June and July because of rain, the islands are seen in a different way. All water activities are operational throughout the year and on days when heavy rains take place the water activities get delayed or shifted to the next day.

How is the weather in Andaman Island during the time of the visit?

The weather in the Andaman Islands varies from 25 Degrees to 33 Degrees and it's a tropical climate throughout the year. Temperature wise even during peak summers the island temperate is around 30 - 35 Degrees.

Step 2 - How many days are required to visit Andaman?

To give a perspective of how many days are required will share the map of the Andaman Islands. The Andaman Islands are divided into North, Middle and South Andaman Islands. The majority of people who travel to Andaman Islands visit the south Andaman Islands that cover Port Blair, Havelock and Neil Island.

Andaman Island Map

Day 1 - Arrival at Port Blair Day 2 - Travel from Port Blair to Havelock Island and Stay at Havelock Island Day 3 - Visit Havelock Island Day 4 - Travel from Havelock to Neil Island Day 5 - Return from Neil Island to Port Blair Day 6 - Departure from Port Blair

If you plan to cover the middle and north Andaman Islands then you will need 9 - 10 days . Check the tour summary below to refer Day 1 - Arrival at Port Blair Day 2 - Travel from Port Blair to Havelock Island and Stay at Havelock Island Day 3 - Visit Havelock Island Day 4 - Travel from Havelock to Neil Island Day 5 - Return from Neil Island to Port Blair Day 6 - Port to Diglipur (North Andaman) and visit Baratang Island Day 7 - Visit Diglipur Day 8 - Return from Diglipur to Port Blair via Covering Middle Andaman Day 9 - Departure from Port Blair You can extend a couple of days more to do things at leisure.

So basically, the number of days you want to visit the Andaman Islands varies upon how many places you plan to visit during your stay at the islands. Post the above itineraries you still have some offbeat places such as Long Island to cover which in itself requires 3 days.

For travelers who are short of time can consider a 4 days trip to Andaman Islands and cover Port Blair and Havelock Island as per the itinerary below. The first and the last days of your visit to Andaman should be in Port Blair as the only commercial airport of Andaman is in Port Blair. Other islands has to be visited in a ferry from Port Blair

Day 1 - Arrival - Stay at Port Blair Day 2 - Travel to Havelock Island Day 3 - Return from Havelock to Port Blair Day 4 - Departure

Step 3 - Things to visit in Andaman

Now while you are planning your visit to Andaman you will need to know what the best things to do in Andaman are and the major places that need to be visited. The top places in the Andaman Islands are

At Port Blair - The capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, this is where you land on the day of arrival in Andaman

Port Blair Andaman Islands

Top places at Port Blair Cellular Jail - History Corbyns Cove Beach - Beach and water activities Chidiatapu - Sunset point Ross Island - History and nature North Bay Island - Beach and Water sports At Baratang Island Middle Andaman - Comes under middle Andaman Limestone Caves is a unique experience here at Baratang

Baratang Island

The major locations at Neil Island are  Bharatpur Beach Laxmanpur Beach Natural Rock Formation Sitapur beach Travelers who prefer visiting the islands for water activities should spend more time at Havelock Island as the major activities are done at Havelock. Refer our detailed article about things to do in Andaman Islands to get all details about various things that one can do in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Knowing what you want to do in Andaman is crucial while planning your island trip. Check our some of our best articles about places, beaches, offbeat things in the islands that can help you select what you want to do in Andaman Beaches in Andaman Tourist places in Andaman Islands Offbeat places in Andaman

Step 4 - Get your flight tickets

Flight tickets to the Andaman Islands can get really expensive based on your date of travel. The airport where you land at Port Blair is called Veer Savarkar International Airport and the code is IXZ

Direct flights are available from Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. Connecting flights are available from all cities with intermittent direct flights from Mumbai and Delhi as well.

When you plan your budget for Andaman the flight costs are a great deal. If you get cheaper quotes for flights then your overall package cost goes down.

Approx cost of flight per person from major cities

Chennai (MAA) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights - One Way - 6000 - 9000 Rupees per person

Kolkata (CCU) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights - One Way - 6000 - 9000 Rupees per person

Bangalore (BLR) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 8000 - 12000 Rupees per person

Hyderabad (HYD) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 8000 - 12000 Rupees per person

Delhi (DEL) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 10000 - 16000 Rupees per person

Mumbai (BOM) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 10000 - 16000 Rupees per person

If you see the price flight varies a lot based on the season and your date of travel. The price can sometimes go very high to reach the Andaman Islands specifically from the North part of India. You can connect with the Experience Andamans team to get group flight prices from the below-mentioned cities and as per availability we will share with you the series airfare.

The cities that we have best price to Port Blair are Chennai Kolkata Bangalore

Step 4 - Cost of Accommodation

Now once you know the cost of a Flight from your city, the next is to add the price of accommodation at all the islands that you are planning to stay in the islands as per your itinerary.

The accommodation has to be booked at Port Blair, Havelock and Neil Island

At Port Blair, the cost of the stay is comparatively cheaper than that of Havelock and Neil Island

Budget accommodation - Less than 1500 Rupees per night on double-sharing basis 2 Star Properties - 2500 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 3 Star Properties - 3500 - 4500 Rupee per night on double sharing basis 4 Star Properties - 5000 - 9000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 5 Star Properties - 8000 - 15000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis

At Havelock Island  Budget accommodation - Less than 1500 Rupees per night on double-sharing basis 2 Star Properties - 3000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 3 Star Properties - 4500 - 5500 Rupee per night on double sharing basis 4 Star Properties - 5000 - 18000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 5 Star Properties - 20000 - 40000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis

Likewise at Neil Island.

The major cost of your trip to Andaman Islands will be

Flight Cost + Accommodation Cost - These two costs will cover around 70% of your total package cost in Andaman Islands

Let's take an example to get an approximate cost so far for your trip to Andaman Islands

Consider 2 Adults are traveling from Chennai and are visiting Andaman Islands for 5 days with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

Flight ticket cost = 8000 x 2 x 2 (return airfare) = 32000 Accommodation Cost in 3 Star hotels Port Blair = 3500 x 2 = 7000 Havelock = 4500 x 2 = 9000

The total cost of accommodation with Breakfast = 16000

Total cost for your trip so far = 32000 For Flights  + 16000 For Accomodation = 48000

Now we need to consider the cost of Ferry, Transport, Activities and Food which we will cover below

Step 5 - Cost of Ferry to move from one Island to the other

Ferry in Andaman Islands is very important again. Basically you will be landing at Port Blair airport and to go to other islands such as Havelock and Neil Island you will need a ferry that takes you from one island to the other and brings to you back. These ferries are of prime importance in your trip planning. If you select an island to book where the ferry is not on a regular basis then you will end up paying more or you can even end not reaching the islands because of no ferry operational.

Ferry to havelock from Port Blair

The major ferries that operate in Andaman Islands are :

Government ferry - No online booking only counter booking allowed Makruzz Nautika ITT Majestic Green Ocean

Except for the Government ferry, all other ferries can be booked online.  Check the ferry booking details on our website that can be booked online

So the ferry charges approximately 1500 Per Person for each side. Therefore for 2 adults as per our previous itinerary, we will need a ferry from Port Blair to Havelock Island and return from Havelock to Port Blair Ferry cost = 1500 x 2 x 2 side = 6000

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) = 54000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

Next we need to discuss about the other cost such as transportation, activities and sightseeing.

Step 6 - Cost of water activities

Once you are sorted with your flight, hotels and ferry then comes the next part of your trip planning is the cost of water activities in the Andaman islands . The major activities that is done in Havelock Island island are as below :

Andaman water sports seawalk

Scuba Diving costs Rupees 3500 Per Person Sea Walking cost Rupees 3500 Per Person Jet Ski ride cost Rupees 700 Per Person Semi Submarine cost Rupees 2100 Per Person Likewise many activities are available at different islands, please check the detailed list of all the water activities in Andaman on our website.

So as per our previous itinerary plan suppose we want to add Scuba Diving  for 2 people then the package cost will add up 7000. After adding the activity the package cost will be

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) = 61000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island Many travelers add 2 - 3 different activities in Andaman and as per the price the budget of your trip increases.

Step 7 - Cost of transportation as per your itinerary

In this section, we will specifically discuss about the package cost for 4 Night and 5 days. So far we have came down to the below cost

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) = 61000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island Let us consider the itinerary as below :

Day 1 - Airport Pickup. Then visit to Corbyns Cove Beach and Cellular Jail - Overnight at Port Blair Day. 2 - Travel from Port Blair to Havelock in a ferry and visit Radhanagar Beach - Overnight at Havelock Island Day 3 - Visit Elephant Beach Day 4 - Scuba Diving at Havelock Island and Return to Port Blair Day 5 - Departure

Cabs in Andaman

The cab cost for the above pickup and drop will come approximately to 7000 Rupees for all pickup and drops. If you are taking a 2 wheeler at Havelock Island then the cost only for Port Blair pickup and drop will come to Rupees 4000 and for 2 days two-wheeler will cost you 500 Per day rental with petrol extra. So lets consider 1500 including rental and the petrol.

So overall in transportation, you will be spending approx 6000 Rupees In the above cost entry ticket to Cellular Jail, Light and Sound Show and ferry ticket to Elephant beach are not considered. These tickets for couple will cost around 3000 Per Couple So the revised budget now becomes

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons + Transportation + Entry tickets = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) + 6000 (Transportation) + 3000 (Entry Tickets) = 70000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

With this we have now come to an approximate cost for your trip to Andaman Islands including flight, hotels, ferry, activity and transport. The last leg is the food cost which will bring you to the overall cost

Step 8 - Food Cost

The final part of your cost comes from your food and personal expenses. Let's consider the average meal cost per person is 500. Therefore for 4 days, you will be having 8 meals in total including lunch and dinner

Approx cost of food equals 500 per meal x 2 person x 4 days x 2 (lunch and dinner) = 8000. Let's keep an upper side for food to be around 10k considering evening snacks etc

Total Final trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons + Transportation + Entry tickets + Food = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) + 6000 (Transportation) + 3000 (Entry Tickets) + 10000 (Food) = 80000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

Therefore we can say that an approximate cost of 80000 will be spent on your 5 days trip to Andaman Islands. The key to planning your trip is to get the lowest deals on flight and hotels. If you get it cheaper then you save a lot more during your trip.

Step 9 - Conclusion

Now, while you got to know what is the break up of the tour and you should plan your trip to Andaman Islands. The above same steps has to be followed whether you are visiting Andaman Islands from any part of India.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Travel guide: top things to do & see, hotel & resorts, restaurants & cafes and more, table of content, travel guide to the andaman and nicobar islands.

Andaman is not just one breathtaking island destination, but a group of 572 gorgeous islands in the Bay of Bengal. With around 37 inhabited islands, each island has something unique to offer. What these islands do have in common though are miles and miles of stunning beaches, endless greenery, amazing hidden treasures and plenty of mouth-watering seafood.

Simply put, the Andamans is a tropical paradise that’s straight out of a postcard. Relaxing beach strolls, the best scuba-diving spots in all of India, lovely historical sites and exotic marine life are all yours to enjoy (responsibly, of course)!

Our handy guide here is going to help you understand the Andaman islands in-depth before you travel here and take-in the Andaman beauty first-hand.

How to Reach the Top Spots in the Andamans?

andaman solo trip

1 . Port Blair

Being the capital of Andaman, Port Blair is connected to all the other islands via a ferry network. This means you can take a ferry from Port Blair and visit other islands like Havelock, Neil Island, Long Island and Little Andaman. Besides being your first destination on Andaman Island, Port Blair also has some really fascinating things-to-do like Corbyn’s Cove Beach, Cellular Jail, Ross Island and Samudrika Marine Museum.

The best way to reach Port Blair is either by flight (daily flights are available from all major cities) or by ship (passenger ships can be taken from Kolkata or  Chennai).

Check out our detailed guide to Port Blair .

2 . Havelock Island

Havelock is by far the most sought-after island on the Andaman Islands. Wrapped in corals, blue waters, and white powdery sand, Havelock is famous for its unending greenery, stunning beaches, cute cafes and water activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, jet-skiing, and the likes of these.

Private and government ferries operate daily between Port Blair and Havelock as well as Neil and Havelock. The air-conditioned private ferries take about 1.5 hours from Port Blair and an hour from Neil Island.

Check out our detailed guide to Havelock Island .

3 . Neil Island

Often known as the sister island to Havelock, Neil island is home to coconut palms, turquoise waters, tropical forests, beautiful corals and exquisite beaches. This little paradise is perfect for those who want to take it easy and unwind all the way. It has a dreamy island-village vibe to it and is great to explore on a bicycle.

The easiest way to reach Neil Island is by hopping on a government or a private ferry. It is about 1.5 hours from Port Blair and about 1 hour from Havelock.

Check out our detailed guide to Neil Island .

4 . Ross Island

It is a tiny island that is full of history, old ruins, amazing wildlife and mesmerizing visuals. This island is a popular tourist spot that is not only rich in natural beauty but it also holds a lot of intriguing stories from the colonial era. It has a stunning light and sound show (with a voice-over by Amitabh Bachhan) that will take you through the British Colonial era and its impact on the Andaman Islands.

Ross Island is 2km away from Port Blair and can be easily reached by a short boat ride from Aberdeen Jetty which takes around 15 minutes. In fact, you can see Ross Island from Port Blair.

Check out our detailed guide to Ross Island .

5 . North Andaman

North Andaman is known for its untouched beauty, lush forests, pristine beaches and turtle nesting sites. Top places to visit in North Andaman include Rangat , Baratang , Diglipur , Mayabunder and the Ross & Smith Islands .

Ferries sail to these spots and the most updated information can be obtained from the government ferry ticketing office. The most common travel option is road. Private and government buses, as well as rental car services, are available for the same.

Note : Only government ferries ply in North Andaman.

What Is The Best Time To Visit Andamans?

This is considered the high season and is the best time to visit the islands. You can expect clear, sunny and pleasant weather to explore the islands, indulge in water sports and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. Normally during this time, the temperature ranges from 24 – 37 degrees celsius.

If you’re someone who’s looking for alone time in the islands then this might not be the best time, as most popular spots are pretty crowded during this time period.

2. June to September

The weather becomes cooler during this time and monsoon begins. This is also known as the low season, which means you will find the Andamans less crowded during this time. The temperature ranges from 22 – 35 degrees celsius.

Although, it is raining during this time, the Andamans take on a different character during Monsoon and it’s a great way to experience a more serene time.

A major chunk of the known history dates back to the post-colonial period beginning with the Danish settlers of the Danish East India Company, followed by the British using the islands as a penal colony in the 19th century.

With the end of British rule, the islands broke free from their shackles and are now part of the union territories of India.

Some Useful Information for Tourists Before Traveling

  • For Indian Tourists, traveling to the Andamans is very similar to traveling to any other state in the country. There is no requirement for a passport, visa, or any other permission. You can stay in permitted areas as long as you wish.
  • For Foreign Tourists, a passport is required along with the Indian visa. The Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is not required anymore for most foreign nationals. For citizens of Afghanistan, Myanmar, China, and Pakistan the RAP is still required.
  • You will find a few ATMs in Port Blair and very less in Havelock, Neil Island and Diglipur so it is essential to also carry cash with you to be well prepared.
  • Andamans is also home to the aboriginal tribes of the islands, who do not want intrusion in their land and life. So, it is advised not to mingle with them in order to respect their space and unintentionally, transmit any kind of disease to them that they’re not immune to.
  • Corals are a huge part of the islands, and for their upkeep & growth, it is highly essential to not damage or unknowingly hurt them while snorkeling and diving. There might also be a lot of poisonous fish and corals in the water so avoid touching them.
  • Be an early riser and make the most of the morning glow. Andamans has some of the nicest sunrises!

All of India has standard 220 Volts with sockets mixed between 3 round pins. While some sockets also take the two round pin plugs, to avoid confusion or disappointment, we suggest guests bring at least one travel adapter.

The whole of India falls under the same time zone so the local time is GMT + 5½ hours throughout the country, all year round. The Andamans are much closer to Thailand than India which means life in the Andamans happens a little bit earlier in the day, to make use of the day light hours.

  • Andaman Islands is an Indian territory. So do I use Indian Currency? Yes. Indian Rupee is used in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. You can exchange currency at the airport, from the banks or currency dealers. Also, you can withdraw Indian Rupees from the ATMs there.
  • Are there any dangerous animals in the Andamans? As such there are no dangerous predatory animals in the forests of the Andamans. So do not come here expecting to see tigers or lions. The forests here are inhabited by animals like wild boar, spotted deer, civet cat as well as numerous species of birds and butterflies. The vast forest canopy provides home to many different species of reptiles as well. Snakes both poisonous and harmless can be seen in the Andamans. Monitor lizards too inhabit these islands and the mangrove creeks provide shelter to ‘salties’ or salt water crocodiles. Tourists are advised to pay attention to sign boards posted on beaches as well as watch their step if walking through dense jungle or mangrove areas.

To make an international call, dial 00 followed by the Country Code followed by the Area Code followed by the Phone Number. Services tend to be reliable. Internet is available, though not as widely as in many other tourist areas and the connection is reputed to be very slow, but there is hope that things will improve in the next season. Roaming mobile signal is available in Port Blair but may be erratic on other islands. If you are planning to buy a new SIM card, we suggest you opt for BSNL as it has the best connectivity on the Andaman & Nicobar islands.
  • Helicopter services are available around Andaman. But tickets are not available for tourists.  Click here for details
  • Can I take sea-planes around Andaman? Sea-planes are not functional in Andamans as of now. These were extremely popular in the past but for the last 3 years, their services were stopped. We do not know when sea-planes will be operational in the future.

  • For Foreigners:  A passport is required with an Indian Visa to enter India. This is also applicable to foreigners entering Andaman and Nicobar Islands directly from a charter/private yachts. Additionally, a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is also required which can be availed on arrival to  Port Blair  from the Immigration counter at the airport or, embarkation of ships at the sea-port. RAP is issued for a 30 day visit to the islands, and is extendable up to 15 more days. Tickets can be rescheduled in Port Blair itself from the respective airline offices.
  • How do I extend my visa in Andaman ? Most foreigners arriving at Port Blair are given a 30 day permit. Closer to the time of expiry (about 3 days ahead) this permit can be extended by another 15 days. This extension can be done either at the police station on  Havelock  or at the Immigration Office in Port Blair, and you will need to show a confirmed return ticket (for the journey within the next 15 days) in order to get this extension. Please note that it may not always be possible to get this extension in a few hours and you may need to stay overnight to obtain the extension if you are applying in Port Blair. It is rare that tourists are given less than 30 days on the permit. However it does happen to a few and it is recommended that you check the expiry of the RAP when the official hands it to you just in case it has been given only for a few days.Diplomats are usually not given the full 30 days and usually get between a week and 15 days.

  • How do I obtain a visa to Andaman? Andaman is a part of India. Thus, a visa for India is valid for the Andaman and Nicobar islands as well and is required for most foreign nationals. The visas are obtainable at the Indian missions, consulates and high commissions overseas. They are valid for the period issued and range from a 15 day period to up to a six month period for tourists. They are valid from the date of issue and it is wise to start travel as soon as the visa is obtained to take advantage of the entire period of visa validity. Once obtained, visas can be extended in India.
  • How expensive are meals in Andaman? The price of a meal depends entirely on where you eat and what you order. A nice quaint restaurant will cost you between Rs.300 to Rs.500 per person depending on what is ordered. Eating at the local village market will be much cheaper and most Andaman islands have a number of small eateries run by locals that work out easy on the pocket. Sea food is more expensive in the Andamans compared to the mainland due to heavy demand and less supply.
  • How long does it take to reach Andamans? A flight from Kolkata/Chennai takes two hours, while the one from Delhi takes about five hours. Ships take as long as 50 hours (3-4 days roughly).
  • Is imported alcohol available on the Andaman Islands? Although alcohol is available in Andaman & Nicobar islands, availability of imported alcohol is extremely limited. Except for a few IMFL (Indian Made Foreign Liquor) bottles, the alcohol availability is restricted to mostly Indian brands. Black Label, Black & White, Bacardi, Smirnoff and Kingfisher beer are some of the brands that are available easily.
  • Is is safe/secure to travel to the Andamans? The quantum of tourist inflow to the Andaman & Nicobar islands is a testimony of how safe tourists feel in the islands. These islands are one of the safest places to live/travel in the country.
  • Is there any nightlife in Andamans? Although many hotels in Port Blair and other developed islands have hotels and resorts that offer a bar, the night life concept has not really caught on in these islands. You will not encounter loud music, disco lights or parties here on a regular basis. Nights are usually quiet and most people get to bed soon to wake early and make maximum use of the day light hours. An exception however is during Christmas and New Year on popular tourist islands like Havelock and Neil where you will find parties going late into the night, loud music and a lot of dancing.
  • What festivals do the local population celebrate in the Andamans? Given the fact that the Andamans has a mix of different religions, almost all festivals celebrated in mainland India including but not limited to Christmas, New Year, Diwali, Eid and Easter are celebrated here. However, the biggest festival here is the ‘Durga Pooja’ due to the number of Bengalis on the Andaman & Nicobar islands.
  • What is the religious stance in the Andamans? India has a very mixed religious history and a reputation for religious tolerance. Hinduism is by far the most popular religion in the Andaman & Nicobar islands followed by Christianity and then Islam. Other religions that make up the total include Sikhism and Buddhism. Even in the Andaman Islands, there is quite a large mix, and while the Hindu festivals are the most celebrated ones, around Christmas time you will see small processions with Santa Claus’ and followers.
  • What is the position regarding use of drugs in the Andamans? Drugs are absolutely illegal in Andaman & Nicobar islands with severe penalties if caught in possession of even minute quantities.
  • What type of behaviour & etiquette can I expect from the locals on the main Andaman Islands? The Andamans are a very relaxed place so the rules are simple as well. Act with respect and decorum, dress appropriately (especially away from the beach), and as anywhere, always ask permission before taking photographs of the local population. A beach destination does not mean that the locals are used to seeing women in revealing A beach destination does not mean that the locals are used to seeing women in revealing swimwear. Please be sensitive to the traditions of the locals and cover up when in areas where locals are present like jetty areas and village markets. Having said that, we would like to stress that the Andamans is a remote place and although the people are casual, one should not expect the kind of comfort or the level of service that is expected of a hotel/resort in mainland India.
  • Will I find vegetarian food in Andaman? Andaman is not known for its vegetarian cuisine but with the inflow of tourists, vegetarian food has become easily available. So YES, if you are a vegetarian travelling to the Andamans, you need not worry. In fact, there are a few vegetarian restaurants we recommend. You can see one of the most famous vegetarian restaurants in Port Blair  here .
  • How safe is travelling to Great Nicobar? Travelling to Great Nicobar by ship or helicopter is very safe. These are both routes that are often traversed by government officials as well as researchers coming to the island for research.

Ross Island is ideally a two part trip, the morning to evening portion includes going around the island looking at the ruins from the era of the British and Japanese rule. the late evening portion includes a spectacular sound, light & video show (yes you read it correctly!!) which has been created specially for Ross island by Revathi (the actress)

andaman solo trip

This is a over hyped, and not worth the time and money spent to reach here. It used to be called the “Paris of the East” when the British settled here. But everything is destroyed now.

The only good place here is a beach that is on the other side. You will need to climb down and up a lot of steps to get there.

It was a perfect location for family fun, the erstwhile Ross Island has all the history of a mini Paris, albeit at the cost of all Indian labour and is an example of the British opulence over poverty stricken India. Perfect for taking pics and the picturesque light house was delightful. We took the buggy as we were a large family with kids. There are deer and peacocks too.
