Darjeeling Trip Plan | About Darjeeling

Darjeeling is located at an altitude of about 6710 feet and is one of the most beautiful destinations in India. The name Darjeeling came from two Tibetan words ‘ dorje ’ meaning and ‘ ling ‘ meaning land. So Darjeeling literally means ‘the land of thunderbolt’.

Previous to its acquisition by the British East India Company in 1835, Darjeeling was a part of Sikkim (Sikkim was an independent kingdom then) and also of Nepal for a brief period of time.

Agni and Amrita in Darjeeling

During February 1829, a British Officer Caption Llyod spent a few days in Darjeeling. The place was then known as the “Old Gorkha Station of Darjeeling”. The place was nothing like what it is today. It was a deserted region with dense forests and mountains. Caption Llyod realized that Darjeeling can become a great sanatorium or health resort for the British officers.

What is the Best Time to Visit Darjeeling?

Usually, Darjeeling has two main peak seasons for tourists – March to May and October to November. This is the time when Darjeeling gets the maximum footfall of tourists. When you want to plan your Darjeeling trip, entirely depends on what you want to experience at Darjeeling. Here I would mention briefly about the seasons in Darjeeling.

March to May (Spring and Summer)

This is one of the best times to visit Darjeeling. The weather remains pleasantly cool. After all, one of the main reasons for planning a Darjeeling trip is to beat the summer heat in the plains. The sky also remains clear giving a clear view of the Kanchenjunga ranges. But this is also a peak tourist season and Darjeeling will be full of local tourists.

March and April is the spring season and also the blooming season of rhododendrons.

June to September (Monsoon)

Monsoon usually starts by mid-June and lasts until September. During the monsoon, there are chances of landslides and some of the roads might be closed due to rains. Darjeeling, however, looks immensely beautiful and romantic during the rains, though you won’t get any mountain views as the weather remains cloudy most of the time. Also, tourism is low at this time and you get to see an uncrowded and relatively serene Darjeeling.

Honestly, monsoon is one of our favourite times to visit Darjeeling . We get rooms at cheaper rates, the roads are empty and the mist and clouds that envelope the roads make Darjeeling completely mesmerizing.

Darjeeling in monsoon

October to November (Autumn)

Autumn is also a good time to visit Darjeeling. The weather remains pleasant, the nature is vibrant and the skies are clear. You would get great views of the snow-covered peaks during this time. Bur again, this is a peak season and Darjeeling will be full of tourists, both local and international.

December to February (Winter)

Winter in Darjeeling is extremely cold and the higher altitudes of experience snowfall in December. Tiger Hill, located only 11 km from Darjeeling also experiences snowfall during the winter. Darjeeling gets fewer tourists during this time. If you plan to visit Darjeeling during the winter, do carry woolens with you.

Winter is our favourite time for Darjeeling tour. We love to enjoy the winters of hill stations and Darjeeling never disappoints us in this matter. Also, Darjeeling oranges are quite famous and we get that during the wintertime.

Having said these, you cannot really predict the weather on the hills. At one time, it is sunny and bright and in the next moment, it can become cloudy and foggy.

How to Reach Darjeeling?

The nearest airport is the Bagdogra Airport and the nearest broad gauge railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP). I have mentioned broad-gauge railways because you can reach Darjeeling from NJP by the famous toy train.

From NJP, you will get both shared jeeps as well as rented vehicles to reach Darjeeling. From Bagdogra Airport, you will get rented cabs to reach Darjeeling. Shared jeeps are also available from Siliguri Main Bus Stand towards Darjeeling. Buses are also available from Siliguri towards Darjeeling, but I would recommend you to travel by the shared sumos instead of buses.

Pro Tip: If you are coming from abroad, you will need some sort of a visa that can be applied for online, or at the embassy. For example, The India evisa for Canada citizens is available online.

Darjeeling is a small hilly town, but there are a number of places to visit in Darjeeling that can be accessed by travelling a short distance. Darjeeling town is small, but Darjeeling district spans across 3,000 sq km. While there are a number of places to visit in Darjeeling and several attractions around the town, you can also visit Kurseong and Kalimpong, two other hill stations that are also quite beautiful and charming. Here I have discussed some of the must-visit tourist attractions in Darjeeling.

1. Tiger Hill

Sunrise from Tiger Hill Darjeeling

I personally feel that a Darjeeling trip can never be completed without watching the sunrise at Tiger Hill . Located at the highest point in Darjeeling at an altitude of 2,590 m, Tiger Hill is located about 11 km from Darjeeling town. If you visit Tiger Hill in the day, it is just another viewpoint and you will hardly see any tourist there. But early in the morning, the place is full of a long queue of cars and people waiting for the sun to rise. Tiger Hill is now internationally famous for its magnificent sunrise view above the Kanchenjunga and other eastern Himalayan ranges.

There is a watchtower at Tiger Hill from where you will get a sweeping view of the mountain ranges.  It is an amazing experience to see the first rays of sun falling on the snow-clad ranges of the Kanchenjunga and Everest. The sky gradually changes colour from golden yellow to orange as the sun rises up the horizon.

The best time to get clear views of sunrise is during autumn and winter. But the weather in Darjeeling can be quite unpredictable and a sudden cloud can totally obstruct the sunrise view. Even otherwise, Tiger Hill is a great place to visit in Darjeeling to soak in the Himalayan beauty.

2. Batasia Loop and War Memorial

Gorkha War Memorial at Batasia Loop

Batasia Loop is located on the Hill Cart Road and is about 5 km from Darjeeling town and is one of the major attractions of your Darjeeling trip . The Batasia Loop is a gigantic railway loop where the Darjeeling toy train takes a 360-degree turn just after Ghum . You can get a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga ranges and the entire landscape from here. There is a well-maintained eco-garden at Batasia Loop along with proper seating arrangements from where you can sit down and see the wonderful views.

The War Memorial is located at the centre of the Batasia Loop. The War Memorial was opened in 1995 to pay homage to the Gorkha soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation. Just in the middle, there is a 3-metre bronze statue of a Gorkha soldier paying homage. Outside the Batasia Loop, there is a small market area selling curios, bags, hats, and other decorative items. You can visit Batasia Loop after a trip to the Tiger Hill to watch the sunrise.

Timings: Everyday 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM

3. Darjeeling Mall or Chowrasta

Darjeeling Mall or Chowrasta

Darjeeling Mall or Chowrasta is the centre of Darjeeling town and is the most happening place in the entire town. It is a flat piece of land converted into a pedestrian-only zone and no traffic is allowed at the Mall. There are seating arrangements around the Mall where you can relax and have a steaming hot cup of Darjeeling tea. A number of shops are located in the Mall area including tea bars, curio shop, book shops and more. You can stroll around the Mall leisurely or else simply sit on the bench and see Darjeeling come alive in front of you. Horse ride is also available around the Mall at a prefixed rate.

There are a few important places to visit around Darjeeling Mall. You can take a walk around the Mall Road and visit a few of the important and heritage places in Darjeeling. There is also an open-air auditorium and stage where many functions and cultural programmes take place. The Mall or Chowrasta is actually the social fabric of Darjeeling town.

4. Darjeeling Zoo and HMI

Darjeeling Zoo

Darjeeling Zoo or Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is one of the attractive places to visit in Darjeeling. Covering a vast area of 27 hectares, the zoo is the only specialized zoo for the conservation breeding programs of rare Himalayan species like the red panda, snow leopards, Tibetan wolf, Himalayan Black bear and other endangered species.

The Darjeeling Zoo is the largest high altitude zoo in India and covers an area of 67.5 acres at an average altitude of 7,000ft.

The Himalayan Mountain Institute or the HMI is said to be a pilgrimage for mountaineers and climbing enthusiast. It is also a must-visit place for all mountain lovers. It has a museum with mountaineering displays and many expedition artefacts. HMI is located in the same complex as the zoo and both of these can be visited together. Whenever we go for a Darjeeling trip, we make it a point to visit HMI. Just staring at the complex and reading its slogan “May you climb from peak to peak” gives us a feeling of happiness.

7. Happy Valley Tea Estate

Happy Valley Tea Estate - Tea tourism

How can your Darjeeling trip be complete without visiting a tea garden? Happy Valley Tea Estate is the best place where you can get a first-hand experience of tea gardens as well as how the tea leaves actually make way to your cup. The tea estate was established in 1854 and was known as the Wilson Tea Estate . Later the estate was renamed as Happy Valley Tea Estate. The estate covers an area of about 110 hectares and is one of the highest tea estates in West Bengal. Most of the tea bushes here are more than a century old!

Located below the Hill Cart Road, one of the best times to visit Happy Valley Tea Estate is during the plucking and processing season between March and October. During this time, an employee with take you around the tea factory and explain the process of withering, rolling, fermenting and drying and also explain how black, green and white tea is extracted from the same tea leaves. At the end of the tour, tea tasting is also offered. There is also a tea boutique from where you can but best quality Darjeeling Tea is grown at the estate.

Timings: The Tea estate and factory are open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM from Tuesday to Saturday. The factory remains closed between November to February as tea plucking does not take place in winter.

8. Observatory Hill and the Mahakal Temple

Mahakal Temple on Observatory Hill

The Observatory Hill and Mahakal Temple is located just behind the Mall. The Mahakal Temple is located at the summit of the Observatory Hill. As you walk around the Mall Road, you will see a flight of stairs leading up to the hill and the temple. It is believed that a Buddhist monastery named Dorjeling Monastery once stood at the place where the Mahakal Temple stands.

The original monastery was built in the year 1765 by the Lama Dorje Rinzing and it was destroyed in 1815 during the Gorkha invasion. Later the Mahakal Temple was built at the place and the monastery was rebuilt at about 1.5 km downhill from the Chowrasta.

At Mahakal Temple, you will not only hear the chants of Hindu prayers but will also hear the Buddhist monks reading scriptures. It is a beautiful communion of Hinduism and Buddhism, just as we saw at Bhaktapur Durbar Square in Nepal .

Timings: From sunrise to sunset.

9. Ghum Monastery

Ghum Monastery Darjeeling - Places to visit in Darjeeling

One of the most magnificent monasteries near Darjeeling is the Ghum Monastery , also known as the Yiga Choeling Monastery . Located at Ghum at an altitude of 7400 ft and 8 km from Darjeeling town, it is one of the oldest Tibetan monasteries to be built in Darjeeling area. The major attraction of the monastery is the 15 ft high statue of Maitreya Buddha or future Buddha.

It is believed that the clay to make the statue of the Buddha was brought all the way from Tibet. In front of the statue, there are two huge oil lamps that are kept burning all the time throughout the year. The monastery also houses a number of rare Buddhist manuscripts including a 108-volume Kangyur – The Tibetan Buddhist Gospel.

Tenzing and Gombu Rock

The Tenzing Rock is a naturally formed huge rock in Darjeeling and is named after the famous Tenzing Norgay . Darjeeling Toy Train

Darjeeling Toy Train - Things to do in Darjeeling

The Toy Train ride or Darjeeling Himalayan Railways is undoubtedly one of the major attractions of Darjeeling and should be a part of your Darjeeling tour. DHR is the first mountain railway in India opened in 1881 to connect Darjeeling with the plains in Siliguri. This mountain railways is said to be one of the best examples of mountain railways and definitely an outstanding engineering feat achieved during those times. The DHR has been accorded the UNESCO World Heritage site status.

If you have the time, the best way to experience the Darjeeling Toy Train is to take a ride from NJP to Darjeeling. It is a long ride almost taking a day, but the ride will be one of life kind of experience. If you do not wish to venture in this journey, you can take a toy train ride from Darjeeling to Ghum or Kurseong.

Darjeeling Toy Train Joy Ride

The best way is, however, to take the Darjeeling Toy Train Joy Ride . This is a 2-hour ride starting from Darjeeling Station to Ghum and back covering a distance of 14 km. The train stops at Batasia Loop. The fare for Darjeeling Joy Ride is between Rs 1000.00 to 1600.00 per head.

Darjeeling Tea

Things to do in Darjeeling - visit a Darjeeling Tea Garden

How can I probably not talk about Darjeeling Tea while writing about Darjeeling? There is almost no doubt that Darjeeling is one of the finest producers of tea in the world. There are a number of tea gardens and estates in Darjeeling district producing some of the finest qualities of tea. A packet of Darjeeling tea is one of the prized souvenirs of India that you can take home.

The cup is actually waiting for you. Take a sip and enjoy the aroma and taste of fresh and pure Darjeeling Tea. Well, that is enough of tea advertisements! Let me now tell you where you can have tea in Darjeeling. There are several outlets, tea lounges and tea bars from where you can taste Darjeeling Tea. Personally, our favourite is the Darjeeling tea at Nathmulls on Darjeeling Mall and Glenarys on Nehru Road. We also love the tea served by the roadside vendors.

Golden Tips Tea Lounge

Some of the best places to have tea during your Darjeeling trip are

  • Nathmull’s Tea and Sunset Lounge
  • House of Tea
  • Golden Tips Tea Lounge
  • Afternoon Tea at Windermere

You can buy your packet of tea from any of these places. But I would suggest you buy Darjeeling tea from places that would provide you with an invoice and not from any roadside stalls. Happy Valley Tea Estate is another good place to buy Darjeeling Tea.

What are the Best Places to eat in Darjeeling Trip?

Breakfast platter at Keventers

Darjeeling has a unique mixture of Bengali, Nepali and Tibetan population. This is reflected well in the food and cuisine of Darjeeling. Added to this is the English influence. So overall, food in Darjeeling is simply something that we can die for.

Delicious and crisp English breakfast is quite common in Darjeeling. Keventers and Glenarys are just the places to have a proper English breakfast. Bacon, sausages, omelettes, eggs with sunny side up, sandwiches along with fresh Darjeeling Tea – who can say no to such food? For the health-conscious, the oil can be a turn-off though.

Momo

Darjeeling is also famous for momos, thukpas and Tibetan and Nepali dishes. There are restaurants serving Indian and Continental cuisines. In short, you will not be disappointed in Darjeeling regarding food!

For detailed information, you can read our article on the best places to eat in Darjeeling .

How much does it cost to travel in Darjeeling?

Monastery near Darjeeling

Darjeeling can be quite easy on the pocket if you wish so. A typical cost of travelling in Darjeeling is given:

Sightseeing costs in Darjeeling by car are fixed. To reduce costs, you can share with other like-minded travellers. You can also walk around and explore Darjeeling on foot. We usually do that on our visits to Darjeeling. You can also hop on to the taxis that the locals use for commuting and visit from one point to the other, and then walk the remaining way.

Trekking permit at Sandakphu-Phalut will come at a fixed cost and so does guide and potter. Permit fee for Singalila National Park is only INR 100. You will get the details of the trek in our blog on Sandakphu Trek .

Shopping in Darjeeling Trip | Darjeeling Travel Guide

Habeeb Mullick and Sons at Chowrasta

Darjeeling, like most of the hill stations, is a shopper’s paradise. And one of my favourite thing to do in Darjeeling trip is window shopping! These days, you will get almost everything in Darjeeling town. However, you would probably want to buy Darjeeling Tea, antiques and jewellery, handicrafts and curio, woolen from Darjeeling.

Some of the popular handicraft items that you can buy from Darjeeling includes Tibetan masks, Thangkas, Khukris (curved Gorkha knives having decorative handles), curios and traditional jewelleries and showpieces. Stoles, woollen sweaters, jackets, caps and pashmina shawls are also widely sold.

There are many old shops and boutique shops at either side of the Nehru Road leading up to the Mall.  Nepal Curio House is one of our favourite places to hunt curio items, masks and thangkas. A Biswa Bangla outlet has also opened at Nehru Road that sells Bengal handicraft items. Another place that I would like to mention is Das Studio . You will get photography items and some old and rare photographs of Darjeeling and the mountains here. Check out the old Darjeeling postcards here.

Das Studio Darjeeling - Travel Guide

Darjeeling Mall is also dotted with a number of shops. I would like to mention about Oxford Book Stores, Habeeb Mullick & Sons (one of the best places for curios), Golden Tips and Nathmull’s at Chowrasta.

Mall Road has temporary shops with hawkers selling woollen and dress items. Bargain well when buying from these markets.

Darjeeling Toy Train Souvenir

Chowk Bazar at lower Darjeeling is a bustling market where you can get any types of household items, clothing items, bags, footwear, grocery and spices. It is infact the local market of Darjeeling town. Prices are relatively cheaper at Chowk Bazar, but I cannot guarantee the quality for items like dresses, shoes and bags.

If you want to buy authentic Tibetan handicrafts, then you should head towards the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre off the Lebong Cart Road. You will get handmade Tibetan carpets, scarves, clothes, handicrafts, thangkas and many more made by the local artisans.

Day trips from Darjeeling | Darjeeling Travel Guide

You can make day trips from Darjeeling to Mirik (known for Mirik Lake) and Kurseong. We recommend to hire a car from Chowk Bazar or Club side taxi Stand to visit these places.

You can also take a day trip to Takdah , Tinchuley and Lamahatta from Darjeeling.

Darjeeling is also the nearest town to Maneybhanjan, the base camp of Sandakphu trek.

Since childhood I’ve witnessed the gradual change in climate, education, culture, society, economy, politics and religions, and recently a bit of business. And when I take the flight retrospectively in introspective mood,I feel sad to land back momentarily. But when I see the flood of tourists with a lot of excitement and sunny faces and the depiction of Darjeeling, my aesthetic sense gets rejuvenated. Salute to the blog writer for the concern shown for sanitation and request to the upcoming tourists not to litter. Welcome for further minute details.

Thank you so much for the comment. Would love to discuss with you about Darjeeling more if given a chance. Do keep in touch!

i was planning to stay at Darjeeling for December for at least a month. i was thinking of renting a house since i have work from home option. Wanted to check is it possible to do so ? how much is the rent ? and do we have steady internet ? Would you be kind to respond to the above if you know about it ?

Hello Haneefa! Well, I do not have much information about renting a house in Darjeeling. But I am sure you will get one. You can check out Classic Guest House or airbnb for the same. At Darjeeeling, you will get a steady internet. No issues with that. Hope this helps. 🙂

Ashini

This is so beautiful! You make me wanna go Darjeeling all the more. Just checking, is Darjeeling safe for solo travelers? Also where’s the best place to stay for female solo travelers? And from NJP to Darjeeling what’s the best mode of transportation for one person?

Hello Ashini! Thank you for stopping by! Darjeeling is quite safe for solo travellers. The best mode of transportation from NJP to Darjeeling for one is to take a shared jeep. otherwise you can reach Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand at Siliguri and take a bus to Darjeeling. You will also get shared cabs from there. If you want a bit more comfort, you can check wizzride as well. Revolver is a good place to stay in Darjeeling for solo travellers. Pahari Soul Homestay is also good. There are a few backpackers hostel in Darjeeling as well. You can check them as well!

Ghoom Monastery (Samten Choling)

11AM – The next stop in the three point tour of Darjeeling should include the Samten Choling Monastery in Ghoom. Typically, Ghoom is popular as having the highest railway station in India. The railway station serves the iconic toy train of Darjeeling. The monastery is fairly spartan but nonetheless it forms a very integral part of the little neighbourhood of Ghoom. Inside the premises Buddhist monks of all ages hang around doing chores and playing amongst themselves.

Batasia Loop

11.30AM – Almost all postcards of Darjeeling contain the picture of the toy train taking a loop turn at Batasia Loop. This place should be the third and final stop of the taxi ride before it takes you back to Darjeeling town. It is situated almost a walking distance away from Ghoom Monastery. The entry fee is INR 15. The Batasia Loop flaunts a circular landscaped garden along which the toy train of Darjeeling moves. On a clear day the pristine Kanchenjunga forms the park’s background. Walking around the park and watching the toy trains chug past is truly delightful. A war memorial is also constructed in the Batasia Loop in commemoration of the sacrifice of the Gorkha soldiers.

The whole 3 point taxi trip for the above mentioned spots for a 4-seater private car+driver shall cost INR 1000 in lean season.

Lunch at Glenary's Restaurant

Photo of Batasia Loop, West Point, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India by Tania Banerjee

Glenary's Bakery Resturant & Pub

12.30PM – Glenary’s is the most popular bakery and cafe in Darjeeling town, but, not many are aware of the fine dining experience it also provides. The upper floor of Glenary’s is a place you must head to if you are looking for fine dining. What makes this place unique is its fireplace. Yes, it actually flaunts a typical fireplace invoking the good-old European charm. Pocket pinch : INR 700 for two persons.

Darjeeling Mall

4PM – 6PM – The Darjeeling Mall or Darjeeling Mall Road is the heart of Darjeeling. It is the busiest and prettiest city square in Darjeeling. The Observatory Hill is a walking distance from the Mall Road. This place is a must visit if you want to enjoy the view of the stunning Kanchenjunga. Walk around and get a feel of the place. Enjoy the view of the majestic Himalayas until sunshine fades away. Once darkness descends walk back to the Mall and watch the locals and tourists hanging around together. The summer months of April to May are the peak time when domestic tourists arrive. It is also the most pleasant time to be in Darjeeling. The monsoon months lasting from June- September is the worst time to go. The incessant rain, landslides and flood may hamper the itinerary beyond recovery. October-November can be considered the shoulder season. December-March is pretty cold and the town sees very little number of visitors during this time. On the other hand, you can have the place more to yourself and get better deals for accommodation, transport and souvenirs.

Getting around

The best way to explore the town is on foot. However, the roads are very steep and the slopes would kill the knees of unfit or elderly people who are not accustomed to walking on steep roads. Tourist taxis are available to take tourists to different sites. Locals move around in shuttle cars.

9AM- Conveniently located at the crosspoint of roads, Keventer’s (Chauk Bazaar, Darjeeling, West Bengal 734101) is wildly popular for the non-vegetarian breakfast menu it serves. It also serves diverse vegetarian snacks. The eatery’s USP lies in its location and open air seating arrangement, though these seats are in high demand. Sipping a hot cup of tea and gorging on a sandwich under bright sunshine with the crisp Himalayan breeze caressing your face is an experience in itself. Keventer’s operates from 8 AM in the morning till 7 PM in the evening. Keventer’s is quite pocket-friendly as the menu features several items in the double digits.

Japanese Peace Pagoda

Photo of Keventers, Chauk Bazaar, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India by Tania Banerjee

Darjeeling , the queen of the hills in West Bengal, India, is hitting the news for all the wrong reasons nowadays. Once peace prevails in the valley again, there can be no better quintessential place to relax than Darjeeling. Nature has been very kind on Darjeeling in terms of aesthetic beauty. But, unfortunately the history of Darjeeling and its people is disturbing. Darjeeling saw power struggles among various community groups. The British Raj ruled over the town for quite sometime and its influence is visible even today. The British frequented Darjeeling as a summer retreat and the tradition has been picked up by the Indians. Residents from West Bengal and other neighbouring states flock to Darjeeling in the summer months.

If you are tight on time and wondering how to enjoy Darjeeling in one-day flat then you are in the right place.

The thermometer seldom crosses 7°C (45°F) in January. The air is crisp, and a snow blanket may occasionally cover the landscape.

If you’re an ardent admirer of winter, January could be the perfect month. Grab a cup of authentic Darjeeling tea and enjoy the snow-clad tranquility.

January generally remains event-free, making it a time for pure, unadulterated nature indulgence.

Pros & Cons

The cold discourages crowds, so you get the scenic vistas all to yourself. However, be prepared to bundle up and know that many outdoor activities are off-limits.

Darjeeling in February: The Twilight of Winter

February is still chilly but slightly warmer, ranging from 3-8°C (37-46°F).

Outdoor activities start to become feasible. Enjoy the last moments of snow if you can!

Losar, the Tibetan New Year, may fall in this month, adding cultural depth to your visit.

Fewer tourists still, but the days start to grow longer, offering more daylight for exploration. The downside is that it can still be quite cold.

Holi, the colorful Indian festival, is a major event you might catch in March.

Perfect if you’re looking to avoid crowds and enjoy pleasant weather. The caveat is that evenings can still be chilly.

Darjeeling in April: The Spring Fling

April offers a pleasant climate, with temperatures ranging from 10-20°C (50-68°F).

April is excellent for almost anything—trekking, touring tea estates, or simply soaking in the beauty.

Expect more tourists, as the season is ideal for all types of activities. However, this also means it can be a bit crowded.

Darjeeling in May: The Peak of Merriment

Anticipate gentle warmth, as temperatures in May typically fluctuate between 13-22°C (55-72°F).

May serves up a veritable smorgasbord of outdoor endeavors. Whether your heart leans toward mountain biking, hiking, or immersing yourself in scenic vistas, this month offers optimal conditions.

Top of Form

Buddha Jayanti, which celebrates the birth of Gautama Buddha, often falls in May.

The best weather for outdoor activities comes with the drawback of higher prices and more crowds.

Darjeeling in June: The Prelude to Rain

June is warm but becomes increasingly humid, with temperatures between 14-24°C (57-75°F).

Still a good time for outdoor activities but be prepared for occasional showers.

There aren’t any significant events, making it a straightforward tourist experience.

While still great for activities, the impending monsoons can result in sudden landslides and travel disruptions.

Darjeeling in July to August: The Monsoon Sonata

Expect a misty and rainy ambiance with temperatures ranging from 13-19°C in July and 14-18°C in August.

While monsoons limit outdoor activities, they open up avenues to explore Darjeeling’s indoor culture, from local cuisine to crafts and museums.

The monsoon season is generally quiet on the festival front.

The landscape turns incredibly lush but comes with the risk of landslides and floods.

Darjeeling in September: The Aftermath

The tail-end of the monsoon leaves the air fresh, with temperatures between 12-18°C (54-64°F).

Tourist activities gradually resume, making it a good time to enjoy both indoor and outdoor experiences.

Darjeeling comes alive during Dashain, usually celebrated in late September or early October.

The terrain might be slightly tricky to navigate due to recent rains, but the absence of crowds makes it worth the effort.

Darjeeling in October: The Autumnal Charmer

October is a breath of fresh air, with the mercury ranging from 10-17°C (50-63°F).

From trekking to paragliding, all activities are back on the table.

October may host several Indian festivals like Durga Puja and Diwali, depending on the lunar calendar.

Excellent visibility and weather make it a prime time for travel. However, make sure to book in advance, as it’s a popular month.

Darjeeling in November: The Chill Factor

November sees a cooler climate, with temperatures between 6-12°C (43-54°F).

Though colder, November is excellent for sightseeing and experiencing the local culture.

There are no significant events, but the charm of early winter itself is a celebration.

The weather is becoming colder, but fewer crowds mean a more peaceful vacation.

Darjeeling in December: The Winter Wonderland

December is when winter comes in full swing, with temperatures dropping to 3-9°C (37-48°F).

Outdoor activities are limited, but the Christmas spirit keeps the town lively.

Christmas and New Year’s Eve bring festivities to this hill station.

The ambiance is magical, but make sure you’re prepared for the cold.

Things To Do In Darjeeling

Darjeeling_himalayas_India_PD

Darjeeling is a quaint town, but it has more to it than the tea and train.

A backpacker always lives on a shoestring budget. And if in this case, he/she gets a chance to do something for free then it’s a Jackpot.

Before I go to any place, I search the prospects of doing something for free. Here are some FREE things you can do in Darjeeling. Check this out, and have fun for free or at a minimal price!

CHAUK BAZAAR

Window shopping is no harm because it is always free. But if you fancy something here then go ahead and shop to your heart’s content. If your hotel is along the Hill Cart Road, then take a shared auto to St Teresa Girls High School.

It is here that all the locals come for shopping. As compared to the Chowrasta Mall items are of the lower price. Take a look around and if some woolens, tea or books grab your attention then do add them to your bag.

ROCK GARDEN

Cost: 10 INR/50 INR

Just Right of the Sanga Choeling Monastery is the Bloomfield Road which leads to the Rock Garden of Darjeeling. It is one of the few things that you can do freely in Darjeeling. There is no entry fee whatsoever.

On the entrance of the Rock Garden widely called Barbotey Rock Garden, there are several souvenir shops. The scenic view here is unparalleled; you climb the rock bridged and go to the top where you see a waterfall making its way below.

For few chosen people the climb gets tiring, but on every level of the Rock garden are beautiful parks with sitting area for you to relax.

BATASIA LOOP

Cost: 10 INR

Batasia Loop, related to the famous UNESCO heritage the Darjeeling Toy Train. It is a gorgeous flowering garden, where the Toy Train takes a spiral ride and descends 140 ft below.

A toy train rides cost much but watching the Toy Train make its loop is cheap. In Batasia Loop, you sit in the flowering garden and watch the train make its astounding ride, and you just pay an entry fee of 10 INR (which is next to nothing).

DALI MONASTERY

Dali Monastery (free entry) is situated on the Hill Cart Road and has a Taxi stand near it. The Monastery is a specimen of Tibetan Architecture, so you enjoy the architecture as well as the stunning scenery in the background. There is no entry fee to the Dali Monastery.

Better visit the Monastery during the prayer time 5 AM- 6 AM and 5 PM- 6 PM. During this time the monks chant, and it’s a peaceful place to be in. There is also a coffee shop which serves momos(dumplings), tea, potato chips and vegetarian snacks.

JAPANESE TEMPLE

Japanese Temple (free entry) is ten minutes ride away from the Darjeeling Town Center. But an uphill walk of 5 minutes takes you to the main entrance. If peace is what you seek, then the prayer starts at 4:30 AM and 4:30 PM in the Prayer Room. Sit here and soak the tranquility.

PEACE PAGODA

But those who desire to see the Panoramic view of Darjeeling can head to the Peace Pagoda. It is the highest standing structure in Darjeeling, hence offers a glorious view of the hilly town. There are four avatars of Buddha in the Pagoda, which you see when you take the Parikrama( a trip of the pagoda).

Tibetan Refugee Center

You can reach the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Center (free entry) by the Lebong Cart Road. This center has a purpose of providing skills to refugees, so they survive in a foreign country by making some income.

Four refugees who supported Dalai Lama escaped Tibet and settled here. They formed a committee to develop the center. Tenzing Norgay was also a member of the management committee.

There is no entry fee to the Self Help Centre. Take a tour of the Show Room where shawls, jackets, scarves and many handmade items are on display. There is a fixed price notice, so do not think of bargaining.

Happy Tea Valley Estate

tea-garden_Darjeeling_India_PD

Happy Tea Valley (free entry) is the nearest Tea Garden in proximity to the Darjeeling town. It is just 3 KM away from the town center. If you like trekking or walking, then walk your way here.

Even though there is no Entrance fee at the Happy Tea Valley Estate, there are guides all over the place to show you around. A guide charges you 50- 70 INR, But if you are a group, the charges become lesser per person. You get a tour of the Tea Factory if you visit from March- October and witness some of the World’s Best Tea production.

Himalayan Zoological Park

This is not a typical Zoo that you see anywhere else, but Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park specializes in the H imalayan Wildlife . Yaks, Wild Bears, Red Pandas, Snow Leopards, Tibetan Wolfs, are in abundance in the Himalayan Zoo.

Yaks are one of the vulnerable animals, so when you are here click some pictures of them. The entry fees for Indians is 20 INR, an extra of 10 INR for the camera. And for foreigners, the ticket is 50 INR + 10 INR for the camera.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute

Native Nepal Himalayan bird_PD

As you keep going upwards in the Darjeeling Zoo, you come across the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. The entry fee is 50 INR (for Indians) and 100 INR (for Foreigners).

Tenzing Norgay was the part of this institute as well; he was the first director of field training. It is a mecca for All hikers and climbers. And even though you are not a hiker the various mountaineering exhibits on display are worth a look.

Observatory Hill

If you go for shopping to the Mall Area then the first thing you should do is not shop, but head to the Observatory Hill. Just 100 yards far from the Chowrasta Mall is the flight of stairs that take you to the Observatory Hill and the Mahakal temple.

It is free of charge, so you can take the climb and glimpse the mystical view of Darjeeling.

Nature in Darjeeling

The golden sunrise sneaking from behind the mighty Kanchenjunga is a majestic sight. If you wake up early enough in the morning, you can travel to Tiger Hill. From the top of the hill , you can get a great view of the sunrise behind the mountains. You will have to squeeze into an already packed taxi to reach the top, but the taxi ride will only cost 40 INR.

Apart from photographing the sunrise, those girls who want a memento can dress up as locals in Rock Garden and snap some pictures. Himalaya Zoo and Singalila National Park display the unique Indian Wildlife. The national park is the best place to trek in the hill station; but, pack your warm clothes to protect you from the freezing temperatures at night.

Riding the infamous Toy Train is a staple of tourism here. The train runs from Siliguri to Darjeeling, spanning an impressive mountainous distance of 86 km.

The trip is one of the most scenic routes through the mountains and is a must-do for all tourists and visitors. Mirik Lake is a beautiful place for tourists who want to do some boating. If you crave more adventure, the Darjeeling Cable Car through the mountains satiates your thirst.

Best Time To Visit Darjeeling

If you are touring India, then we recommend you visit in summers, that is from April- June. As the rest of Indian Peninsula is hot, Darjeeling gives you respite from the scorching heat.

Many Bengali and Indian visitors travel here in the summer. Although the summer is the best time to visit, it is also the most crowded time to visit. Even in the other seasons this hill station still retains its charm.

So, if you prefer to visit when there are fewer tourists, you will have better luck in the other months of the year. Plus, the travel costs are lower in the off-season.

Head to Bagdogra, the nearest airport to Darjeeling. Flights from Delhi , Kolkata, Guwahati and other metro cities fly into Bagdogra. Prepaid taxis from the airport to Darjeeling charge 1800 INR. If you are on tight budget, you can opt to travel in shared jeeps which cost 200-300 INR. Those who love to watch the stunning scenery from their windows should take a train to Siliguri. From Siliguri, you can take private cabs.

What To Wear

Darjeeling is always cold. A visit during summers requires light jackets, thermals and a good pair of boots. And a visit in winter needs thermals, full sleeves t-shirts, thick jackets to ward off cold. Dress up in layers so you can take the layers off when you want because you never know when the sun comes out in Darjeeling.

It may seem that Darjeeling is a part of Northeast India, but it is a part of West Bengal. People here speak in Gorkha tongue and Bengali. It is a mixture of both languages. You can easily understand their language if you are from nearby states like Odisha. But if you are from any other part of India or a foreigner then you can use Hindi and English respectively.

The currency used here is same as in the rest of India. You can use the ATMs here, to withdraw the money. Foreigners can bring a lot of cash, but if you run out of it also no need to worry, the ATMs here help you withdraw money from your account in INR.

Most of the hotels here provide free Wi-Fi. Before booking a hotel room, check the facilities. If it provides free Wi-Fi, then you have no problem with internet connection.

Darjeeling is a town in the hills; sometimes the connection is poor because of the weather. Do not panic about it. Buy an Aircel sim card before heading to Darjeeling. The connectivity of Aircel network here is fast and stays even though you drive higher in the hills.

Darjeeling is a pretty little town influenced by Tibetan culture. You come across a lot of monasteries. And the chances are high that you will meet more Buddhists as compared to Hindus. Unlike the rest of India, you can find wine shops easily, and eat Beef without being judged. Music is a much-loved art here, be open to any genre of music.

Local Cuisine

Forget about the staple Indian food here. You can get Rice and Dal in Darjeeling, but there are some specialties you must try. Momos are on the menu in each restaurant. Do not expect expensive restaurants, places here are more like shacks with delicious home –cooked food. Noodles, soup, and Thupka are other cuisines you must try while here.

Getting Around in Darjeeling

Shared four wheelers are easy to find in the Dali Taxi stand and Chowk Bazaar. If you want to go to the market, just say “Market Jana he” and the driver drops you in the Bazaar (only 1o INR). For sightseeing trips, hire a tour guide with the help of your hotel. A one-day tour of all the sites costs 3000 INR (if it is private, shared tours cost less).

Walking is a chore in Darjeeling because there are uphill roads, do it only if your legs are strong enough.

Darjeeling Trip Cost

A standard hotel room without a heater costs you 1000 INR / night. Food costs depend on the type of food you eat, but you can keep aside 500 INR (for excessive eating). And sightseeing costs 3000 INR. If you include the travel expenses (by train), then 8000- 10,000 INR is enough for a three-day trip.

How Many Days of Travel

Darjeeling is a small town, but it has so much to offer to tourists. There are more places to see here like a big tourist destination. From hill-view points to plantations there is an abundance of sites. A 4-5 day trip here is enough to cover all the tourist’s points. But if you want to just soak in its beauty then seven days is a leisure trip.

Darjeeling Road Conditions

Roads here are dangerous- not just dangerous but lethal. Many accidents occur here which are fatal. Have a talk with your driver before he drives. The drivers-cum- tourist guides have experience. But you need to tell them to drive slow if you are not accustomed to hilly roads. Do not drive here at any cost if you are not a seasoned driver.

Renting Vs Bus or Taxi

Renting a tourist cab is the best way to get around in Darjeeling. There are Tata Sumo and Bolero vehicles offering shared tours. But you can hire a private vehicle all for yourself and see places at your own time.

How Safe is Darjeeling

Darjeeling is one of the safest places in India. People here are warm and welcoming. Female travelers especially will experience care and kindness from most people here. There is less chance of robbery, but it is wise to keep your belongings close to yourself.

Part Victorian holiday resort, part major tea-growing centre, Darjeeling (from Dorje Ling, “the place of the thunderbolt”) straddles a ridge 2200m up in the Himalayas, almost 600 km north of Kolkata . Over seventy years since the British departed, the town remains as popular as ever with holiday-makers from the plains, and promenades such as the Mall and the Chowrasta still burst with life. The greatest appeal for visitors has to be its stupendous mountain vistas – with Kanchenjunga (the third-highest mountain in the world) and a vast cohort of ice-capped peaks dominating the northern horizon.

From the Maneybhanjang–Phalut trail to the tea plantations, these are the best things to do in Darjeeling.

#1 Singalila treks: the Maneybhanjang–Phalut trail

The single ridge of the Singalila Range rises near Darjeeling and extends all the way to the summit of Kanchenjunga. Unfortunately, although some longer trails have been opened in Sikkim, there is no provision yet to link them to the initial lower sections of the ridge to Sandakphu (3636m) and Phalut (3600m) in Darjeeling District.

Easily accessible from Darjeeling, the later stages of the Maneybhanjang–Phalut trail provide magnificent views of the higher ranges; lightweight expeditions are possible as there are trekking huts and lodges and simple food stalls along the way. The walking is demanding and you should bring your own sleeping bag and warm clothes as the weather can be unpredictable.

Maneybhanjang, a small town and road-head 27km from Darjeeling, is the usual starting point for the route, with the finest views found along the Sandakphu–Phalut section of the trail while trekking north. You will need to get an entry fee from the Forestry Department to enter the Singalila National Park, and regulation states that you has to take a guide – available through the Highlander Guides and Porters Welfare Association.

#2 Visit leafy Kalimpong

Though it may seem a bit grubby at first, the quiet hill station of Kalimpong, 50km east of Darjeeling, has much to offer, including a colourful market, an extraordinary profusion of orchids and other flowers, great views of Kanchenjunga, several monasteries and lots of potential for walks in the surrounding hills, which are still home to the original Lepcha community.

Like Darjeeling, Kalimpong once belonged to Sikkim, and later to Bhutan. Unlike Darjeeling, however, this was never a tea town or resort but a trading centre on the vital route to Tibet. Despite a large military presence, Kalimpong’s recent history has been one of neglect, decaying infrastructure and water shortage.

#3 Visit a Darjeeling tea estate

Although the original appeal of Darjeeling for the British was as a hill resort with easy access from the plains, inspired by their success in Assam they soon realised its potential for growing tea.

Today, the Darjeeling tea industry continues to flourish, producing China Jat, China Hybrid and Hybrid Assam. A combination of factors, including altitude and sporadic rainfall, have resulted in a relatively small yield – only three percent of India’s total – but the delicate black tea produced here is considered to be one of the finest in the world.

It is also some of the most expensive with varieties fetching more than ₹18,000 a kilo at auction. Grades such as Flowery Orange Pekoe (FOP) or Broken Orange Pekoe (BOP) are determined by quality and length of leaf as it is withered, crushed, fermented and dried.

To watch the process for yourself, call in at the Happy Valley Tea Estate, a half-hour walk from Darjeeling off Lebong Cart Rd.

#4 Ride the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the Toy Train

Completed in 1881, the small-gauge (2ft or 610mm) Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was designed as an extension of the North Bengal State Railway, climbing from New Jalpaiguri, via Siliguri, for a tortuous 88km up to Darjeeling. Given World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1999, the Toy Train follows the Hill Cart Road, crossing it at regular intervals and even sharing it with traffic.

The Toy Train is no longer an essential mode of transport but is certainly a tourist attraction, and currently runs from Kurseong to Darjeeling. A handful of steam engines are still in use but diesel engines are now de rigueur on the long route.

Weather permitting, first-class coaches with large viewing windows provide magnificent views as the journey progresses and the scenery gradually unfolds; second class can be fun but crowded.

At its highest point at Jorebungalow near Ghoom (2438m), 7km short of Darjeeling, the dramatic panorama of the Kanchenjunga Range is suddenly revealed.

When planning a visit to Darjeeling, India, choosing the right area to stay can greatly enhance your experience. From the vibrant commercial hub of Chowrasta to the serene hillside retreats of Ghoom, Darjeeling offers a diverse range of neighbourhoods catering to different preferences and interests.

Chowrasta and Mall Road

Located in the heart of Darjeeling, Chowrasta and Mall Road are the pulsating hubs of the town, bustling with activity, vibrant markets, and a wide range of mid-range accommodation options.

Gandhi Road and Laden La Road

For travellers seeking a blend of convenience and tranquillity, Gandhi Road and Laden La Road offer the ideal choice. The guesthouses and budget hotels are slightly removed from the bustling town centre, providing a peaceful atmosphere.

Lebong and Happy Valley

If you desire a serene escape amidst nature, away from the town's hustle and bustle, consider staying in the Lebong and Happy Valley areas. Surrounded by lush green tea gardens and boasting breathtaking mountain vistas, the higher-quality hotels here provide a tranquil retreat for nature lovers.

Chowrasta Mall

Located at the heart of Darjeeling, Chowrasta Mall is a bustling hub of culinary activity with a delightful assortment of restaurants, cafes, and bars. From traditional Indian fare to global cuisines, this area caters to all palates.

This vibrant neighbourhood offers a plethora of dining options, from family-run eateries serving local Himalayan delicacies to fusion restaurants blending international flavours with local ingredients.

The main thoroughfare of Darjeeling has plenty for food enthusiasts. It’s the best place to savour local specialties like thukpa, momos, and traditional Tibetan butter tea.

Gandhi Road

Gandhi Road, located just off the Mall, is a vibrant neighbourhood known for its eclectic mix of bars and restaurants. Whether you're in the mood for authentic Indian cuisine, international flavours, or fusion dishes, Gandhi Road is the place to go.

From iconic heritage trains to shared jeeps, Darjeeling offers an array of transportation options that will elevate your journey. Here’s how to get around.

By the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

Embark on a nostalgic journey aboard the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, affectionately known as the Toy Train. This iconic attraction weaves its way through the hills, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.

By shared jeep

For flexible and convenient transportation within Darjeeling and its neighbouring areas, shared jeeps are the best options. You can easily find them at designated stands or enquire at your accommodation. Shared jeeps are a popular choice for reaching nearby attractions such as Tiger Hill, Ghoom Monastery, or the stunning Mirik Lake.

If you prefer more personalised and convenient transportation, hiring a private taxi or renting a car is a viable option. This allows you to have complete control over your itinerary, enabling you to explore Darjeeling and its surroundings at your own pace. Consult with local travel agencies or your accommodation for recommendations on reliable taxi services or car rental companies.

The best seasons to visit Darjeeling and the mountainous areas of north Bengal are after the monsoons and before winter (late Sept to late Nov), and spring (mid-Feb to May).

Darjeeling experiences a temperate climate, with cool summers and chilly winters. The weather is pleasant during the months of April to June and September to November and the skies are clear. During these months, you can enjoy panoramic views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks and partake in various outdoor activities.

It's worth noting that Darjeeling receives a fair amount of rainfall during the monsoon season (June to August), which can limit visibility and make trekking trails slippery.

To truly appreciate the charm of Darjeeling, it is recommended to spend a minimum of three to four days in the town. This timeframe allows you to explore the key attractions at a leisurely pace and immerse yourself in the unique ambiance of Darjeeling.

With three to four days, you can visit iconic spots like Tiger Hill, the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, and the Happy Valley Tea Estate. You can also take time to explore the monasteries, enjoy scenic drives, and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Rock Garden and Ganga Maya Park.

Additionally, allocating a day to visit the tea gardens surrounding Darjeeling will give you the opportunity to witness tea plucking and processing and indulge in tea tasting. Overall, three to four days is a recommended duration to fully experience the attractions and atmosphere of Darjeeling.

Virtually all travellers arriving in Darjeeling from the plains come via Siliguri, whether by the Toy Train or by road. Jeeps and buses stop at the bus stand in the lower half of the town, from where it’s a bit of an uphill trek to the main hotel area. Here’s how to get to Darjeeling.

The nearest airports to Darjeeling are Bagdogra, 100km to the south (see page 787) — allow at least 3hr to get there by taxi – and Pakyong, 79km away, in Sikkim. By train Darjeeling is famous for its spectacular Toy Train (see box). Railway reservations (daily 8am–2pm) for selected main-line trains out of NJP can be made at Darjeeling’s station a couple of days before departure, though booking online or via one of the town’s travel agencies is easier.

Due to poor road conditions, it is best to avoid the handful of buses and minibuses that run to Siliguri from the bus stand near Chowk Bazaar.

For overland bus travel to Kathmandu , head to the border town of Kakarbitta in Nepal to get a choice of coaches.

By taxi/jeep

In the mornings, jeeps run regularly to Gangtok (for Sikkim; foreigners need two photographs and photocopies of their passport information page and Indian visa to get permits at the border), Siliguri, Mirik, and Kalimpong, and are by far the most efficient way to travel, especially if you pay for two front seats for yourself.

Book in advance if you can at the jeep stand (next to the bus stand); each route has its own syndicate, and some have two or three.

Trip Planning 101: Deciding How Many Days You’ll Need for Your Disney World Vacation

darjeeling trip how many days

We all want to stay at Disney World as long as we possibly can, right?  Well, realistically, we have to base this decision on a whole list of factors that must be considered.  If you are trying to decide on how long to book your vacation for, then here is a list of questions you must ask yourself before you book your vacation:

10 – How much time do you have to take?

This is definitely going to be a major deciding factor for the length of your stay.  You can only come for as long as you have the time to take off of work.  So run the days and see how much vacation time and how much you can afford to use on the vacation to help with selecting the number of days.

9 – What time of year or season will you be visiting?

If you are visiting during a busy time like the Christmas season or during the busiest part of the summer, then you may want to make sure that you can stay longer.  Lines will be longer and the parks will be more crowded so you won’t be able to see and do as much in a day as you could during one of the slower seasons.  Don’t get me wrong, these are still amazing times to visit and have their own perks, but in terms of deciding time, this is something to definitely consider.

darjeeling trip how many days

8 – How far are you traveling from?

If you are traveling overseas or from a location where flights are extremely expensive, then you may also want to consider a longer stay in that case.  You would get more “bang for your buck” if you stay longer and make good use of the cost for the flights.  This may also ring true even if you are closer but are able to find better flight deals with more flexible dates.  If you have the extra time to take and can save a chunk of change on the flights, you can use that savings to spend more time on vacation.

7 – What are the ages of your group?

It is important to consider the ages of everyone in your group to help determine stamina and the ability to go all day every day.  Younger children and elderly adults may not be able to go at a rapid pace for the entire trip, so you would either need more time on vacation or adjust your expectations for how much you can accomplish in a day.

6 – How often do you get to visit Walt Disney World?

If you get to visit frequently and make regular trips to Walt Disney World, then you may not need a super long trip.  If you know that you won’t get to come back for a couple of years or longer, then you may want to consider going all out and staying as long as you can so that you can see and do everything, even a couple of times for some things so that you get a good dose of Disney before you go back to your very long countdown until you get to come again.  Plus, there are likely to be changes the next time you visit if it will be a long while.

5 – Do you like to enjoy relaxation time on vacation, too?

If you and your family are the type that needs rest days and days to just relax and not have to rush around or experience theme park life for multiple days in a row, then you will need to work in resort days and days for relaxation.  This may mean that you will want to add a couple of days onto your vacation so that you can still do and see everything, but have time to recuperate and rest up for more fun.

4 – Are there must-do items outside of the parks on your vacation list?

Do you plan to go to the water parks, golfing, miniature golfing, spa days, horseback riding, biking, and/or any of the other recreational activities available at Walt Disney World?  If so, then you will want to factor these experiences into your decision so that you have plenty of time to do everything that you and your family have your heart set on.

darjeeling trip how many days

3 – Do you plan to visit other Orlando spots besides Walt Disney World?

Orlando is definitely the home to many different theme parks, shows, and experiences.  You also have beaches, museums and so much great stuff to do in the area.  If you plan to do more than just Walt Disney World, then you will need to include days to enjoy those experiences so that you are able to do and see everything.  Those are definitely great experiences to be had, too, but you don’t want to give up too much of your Disney time to fit in all of the Disney experiences, too.

2 – What is your budget?

This will likely be another key deciding factor for your stay.  If you have a set budget and you want to stay longer, you may have to adjust your accommodations to stay at a cheaper resort in order to make the budget work so that you can stay for as long as you want.

1 – Will you need time to prep for your trip or time to unwind once you get home?

If you are the type of person that needs a day or two to pack and get ready, or you need a day or two to unwind, do laundry and unpack once you get home then you also have to factor this into your decision.  If you only have a set amount of vacation time, then this may dictate the length of your vacation if you know you will require this time in order to be able to get back to normal life and function back in your job.

How do Australian worker commute times compare to Europe and North America?

A large crowd of people stands on a train platform.

It is "quite normal" for people to live more than an hour from their workplace.

Urban sprawl and the search for affordable housing are contributing factors.

What's next?

Experts say governments can ease commute times by bolstering public transport.

The average Australian worker spends more than an hour a day stuck in rush-hour traffic, fighting for a seat on the bus or trying to zone out on the train.

Commute times nationwide are longer than for many European countries — they also surpass other car-dependent countries such as the United States.

But is there a reason we're lagging behind? And what can we do to make our travel time shorter?

Are commuter times likely to get better soon?

It's all relative but commuter times in Australia have been increasing .

For example, workers averaged a weekly commuting time of about 3.7 hours just more than two decades ago. That grew to about 4.5 hours in 2017.

Dr Alan Both from the Australian Urban Observatory said the urban sprawl in some of the larger cities including Melbourne and Sydney was contributing to the increase in commuter travel time.

"It's quite normal for people to be living over an hour away from work," he said.

"Affordability is the main issue with these sorts of things — you can't expect young professionals to be able to afford anywhere near the city, they just simply have to live further out.

"And because of that, they have the experience of longer commutes."

Dr Both explained there were solutions to ease the traffic and add more public transport in newly built suburbs in some of the country's growth areas.

"One of the last things to go in are things like bus stops. So in general, if you're moving to a new area, you are a car user," he said.

"So you have to drive and that increases the traffic on the roads and slows everything down."

He added that due to the heavy reliance on car usage and a lack of public transport options in some of these newly built outer suburbs, delays in getting to work were inevitable.

"New suburbs have really bad congestion. You even see it in the sort of middle- and outer-ring suburbs where just getting onto the highway is a traffic jam," he said.

"So not even actually getting to the highway just, you know, entering and exiting."

RMIT University's Dr Koorosh Gharehbaghi specialises in public transport systems.

He said the average distance people were living away from work was increasing but there were other factors at play.

"In cities that are doing sort of a large upgrade with the Sydney Metro, even Melbourne, for example, the commuter time has increased because they're doing a lot of maintenance works and upgrades," he said.

"But what it comes down to is the actual distance of travel to work."

How does Australia compare to other parts of the world?

Australia does not compare well to international examples in both Europe and North America.

In Europe, more than 60 per cent of workers in the EU travelled less than half an hour from work to home.

But experts including Dr Gharehbaghi have said European examples might not be the best comparison when it comes to Australia.

For example, cities such as Copenhagen were smaller in size and population.

But Dr Gharehbaghi said there were elements like frequency of service that Australia could try to emulate.

"The level of public transport service they have … are not only the latest systems available, but the frequency that they have with their public transport is quite high," he said.

What are some international examples that Australia could look to?

Experts have said Australia should look at cities that have a comparable size with similar levels of urban sprawl of large capitals including Melbourne and Sydney.

"In smaller cities and countries, they have much more [stricter] sort of planning schemes, which means they heavily monitor due to lack of available land," he said.

It's why he thinks some of Australia's largest cities should look to Toronto for models to improve commuter travel.

"What you find with Toronto, is it has a lesser commuter wait time compared to Melbourne," he said.

"Why that is, because they're spending a lot of money on upgrading and updating the systems, more than the state government of Victoria, as well as the federal government."

What can governments do to improve work commute times?

The frequency of public transport services is top of the list for both experts but they say there needs to be more foresight in planning our cities.

"Increasing frequency is one but also in making sure that, again, that the system can be able to handle that higher-intensity service required," Dr Gharehbaghi said.

He believes a bigger problem for increased commuter times, especially in some of the larger capital cities, is unchecked growth in some outer-suburban communities.

"We have urban growth corridors that are designated by the state governments in terms of the population sort of growth for the future," he said.

"But what happens is, when the population of cities are expanding, [they are] not in the particular area that the government had in place in terms of possible growth."

Dr Both explained there were several things in play, including increased frequency of services and higher density.

But he said there were some quick wins governments could have in improving commuter times.

"One of the big barriers for people using the transit system is inflexibility. You quickly become beholden to the schedule of the public transit," he said.

He added there might be difficulty in increasing services on trains in the short term but said there was an opportunity to strengthen the bus network.

"If you go to the outer suburbs or even middle-ring suburbs, there might be a bus only every 30 minutes," he said.

"If you've just missed that bus, you're waiting there for another 30 minutes."

Travel tips for a Fourth of July that's set to break records

darjeeling trip how many days

Luke Garrett

Airports around the United States are preparing for what could be the busiest Fourth of July travel season on record. The nation's roads are no different. Traffic could reach never-before-seen volumes over the Independence Day holiday.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a press release. “We anticipate this July 4th week will be the busiest ever.”

Nearly 71 million people are expected to make trips for the Independence Day travel period, AAA predicts.

Here's what to know about traveling for the holiday this week.

The TSA sets a new record and readies for another

Last week, a record-breaking 2.99 million passengers went through U.S. airports in a single day, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The agency said it's expecting a new travel record this week.

At Philadelphia International Airport, Gerardo Spero, the TSA’s federal security director for the airport, is dealing with an 8% passenger increase this year and is cautioning travelers to give themselves extra time.

“The best advice that I can offer is to get to the airport well before your ticketed departure time,” Spero said in a news release . “Now more than ever it is vital to give yourself plenty of time to park or return a rental car, check in with your airline to check bags and prepare for the security checkpoint."

There's usually no need to panic when planes make emergency landings. Here's why

There's usually no need to panic when planes make emergency landings. Here's why

Spero also said travelers can help each other out by being "efficient" in the security lines: take off shoes and belts preemptively, empty your pockets into your carry-on, and grab a bin early.

Over at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport — where travel volumes are up 5% — the TSA wants travelers to double-check their carry-on bags before they get to the airport.

“We are asking travelers to be good partners with TSA and ensure that they are prepared for the screening process," TSA Federal Security Director for Washington Greg Hawko said in a release . "Please don’t bring prohibited items in your carry-on luggage."

The busiest airport days are expected to be July 3, 7 and 8, according to flight website Hopper . The company projects Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth and Denver airports to be the ones with the most travelers.

This rise in summer air travel comes amid heightened attention on aircraft maker Boeing's quality control practices after a door plug blew out on a 737 Max jet in midair at the start of the year. Still, flying is the safest way to travel .

On the road

Nearly one in five Americans are set to drive more than 50 miles this Fourth of July travel season, according to an AAA forecast .

If you want to beat the traffic, drive early. INRIX, a transportation data provider, said driving on Monday should save travelers time. Any day after that, the best time to drive is before 10 a.m.

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3, as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7, as they return,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX , said in a statement. “Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal.”

The state put the first diverging diamond at a notoriously traffic-clogged intersection in Springfield where it could often take as long as 20 minutes to make a left turn.

When driving on the wrong side of the road is the right way to speed up traffic

If you are preparing for a longer road trip with family and friends, AAA recommends running through this checklist: check kids' car seats, bring an emergency pack (first aid, jumper cables, snacks and water) and map the route.

At the pump, drivers can expect lower gas prices than last year with a gallon costing an average of $3.50. In 2023, gas cost $3.53 per gallon and in 2022, it cost nearly $5.

This year, the states with the most expensive gas are California ($4.80), Hawaii ($4.71), Washington ($4.21), Oregon ($4.07), Nevada ($4.04), Alaska ($3.90), Illinois ($3.88), Michigan ($3.70), Washington, D.C. ($3.66), and Indiana ($3.65).

Another cost to consider is tolls. Not all states have them, but check your route on Toll Guru to see how much change you might need on hand or how much money to have loaded on the E-ZPass.

The weather factor

High temperatures and a few thunderstorms are in the forecast for much of the country, according to AccuWeather . Both can cause travel delays.

The worst heat is expected in California.

Wyatt Seymore pours the last drops of liquid from a water bottle into his mouth on June 17 as he takes a break from unloading a stiflingly hot trailer of fireworks outside Powder Monkey Fireworks ahead of the opening of the stand in Weldon Spring, Mo.

Heat wave safety tips from the world's first chief heat officer

"It's going to be downright hot across the Southwest, especially in California and the Desert Southwest where record highs will be challenged," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Joseph Bauer told the website.

The Southern Plains and Southeast regions are also expected to feel the heat over the Independence Day weekend with higher than average temperatures.

High temperatures can slow down travel. When temperatures get too high, railway tracks can start to bend — forcing trains to slow down or stop completely. And planes may face weight restrictions during severe heat.

Traveling during the morning or evening can help offset the risk of heat-related delays.

While much of the country will face high temperatures on the Fourth of July, the Northern Plains, Midwest and portions of the Northeast may see thunderstorms, according to AccuWeather.

Flight delays and cancellations

As a rule, airlines are required to offer travelers a refund or book them another flight if they cancel a passenger's flight. The rules surrounding flight delays are more complicated.

Airlines are ordered to give full refunds instead of vouchers and to stop hiding fees

How dangerous are Fourth of July fireworks? Here's a look at the numbers.

darjeeling trip how many days

As Independence Day rolls around, bookended by days of bangs and pops from professional and store-bought fireworks, it's worth a reminder to play it safe before lighting off that fuse.

We're in the middle of the Consumer Product Safety Commission's annual window for studying the safety and injury impact of fireworks. The numbers, while down slightly, still signal a need for safety reminders.

“While it is a great American tradition to enjoy fireworks around the 4th of July, it is important to remember that all fireworks, even sparklers, pose dangers to consumers," Alex Hoehn-Saric, chairman of the CPSC, said in the agency's annual statement on fireworks safety . "The safest way to view fireworks is to watch professional displays.”

Fireworks present dangers of physical injury, particularly to the hands and face, and environmental concerns in drier areas of the country.

Last year, fireworks accounted for an estimated 9,700 injuries resulting in hospital emergency room visits.

How many people were injured or killed by fireworks in 2023?

Roughly 9,700 people were injured by fireworks in the U.S. in 2023, according to the report. This represents a third straight year of declines in injury numbers after a record 15,600 injuries in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of the eight deaths that occurred in 2023 – all male victims ranging in ages 15 to 51 – five deaths were determined to have resulted from misuse of fireworks.

What body parts are commonly injured by fireworks?

In the 2023 study period, which ran from June 16 to July 16, hand and finger injuries made up more than a third of the 6,400 fireworks injuries that resulted in emergency room visits. Injuries above the neck – eyes, ears, face and head – accounted for a combined 41% of those injuries.

Of all the injuries in the study period, 42% of them were burn-related.

Fireworks sales, 1998 to 2023

According to figures from the American Pyrotechnics Association, spending on consumer-grade fireworks dipped slightly last year, while spending on professional display fireworks continued growth from the 2020 low caused by the pandemic when public gatherings were limited.
