Looking for warm outerwear? Canada Goose produces some of the finest in the country. They are headquartered in Toronto, and they manufacture everything in Canada, rather than outsource to reduce cost.

The company had been criticized due to its use of coyote fur. In June 2021, it announced that it would stop making its products with fur by the end of 2022 after years of backlash over its use of coyote fur.

Whether it reminds us of an adventure, a certain place we visited, or maybe even someone we met along the way, trying to find that truly unique gift can be a lot of fun.

And Canada is definitely known worldwide for a few things in particular, and I am not referring to our propensity to apologize or use the word “EH”!

Items like maple syrup, Tim Horton’s coffee, and anything related to hockey, are super popular souvenir ideas. As someone who has lived in Canada all my life, I can definitely attest to this!

And the best part is, no matter what your budget, you are sure to find a Canadian souvenir that is affordable, practical, unique, fun, and that represents this amazing country.

Best Canadian Souvenirs for Foodies

If you are anything like our family, food and travel are strongly intertwined. So naturally, many of the things on our list are edible!

1. Maple Syrup

Quintessentially Canadian, maple syrup tops our list of the best souvenirs to bring home. We always have a large jug of it in the house.

Considering Canada produces 85 percent of the world’s maple syrup, what could be more representative, or delicious?

Eastern Canada has just the right combination of cold spring nights and warm daytime temperatures to produce an abundance of the sap needed to make maple syrup.

You will find the ‘liquid gold’ in any number of gift shops, farmers’ markets, and foodie specialty shops across the country.

If you are visiting in the spring, we recommend that you head to a Maple Syrup Festival where you can watch it being made, and even sample the syrup at a variety of production stages.

And although pure maple syrup comes at a premium price, it is far superior to what you typically find in grocery aisles.

And with different grades to try (ie light, amber, dark), there is one to suit any taste. We recommend the amber, as it is what most people expect maple syrup to taste like.

2. Products Made From Maple Syrup

Maple syrup is a pretty important part of Canada’s culture and history.

Our Indigenous people taught early settlers to harvest sap, boil it down to make syrup, and then further cook it down until sugar was produced.

Maple sugar was the first kind of sweetener used in Canada and is now enjoyed in over 45 countries around the world.

Today, a variety of delicious products are made from both maple syrup and maple sugar. In fact, I use maple sugar in a lot of my baking or paleo recipes.

From maple-flavoured tea to cookies , fudge , hard candies , and a variety of other goodies, you are sure to find something to sweeten up someone’s day!

3. Tim Horton’s Coffee

Nothing can brighten up a cold Canadian morning more than a cup of Tim Horton’s coffee. And considering you can even find a Tim Horton’s in most small towns, makes it even better.

Synonymous with Canadian culture and hockey arenas all over the country, this coffee would definitely make an awesome souvenir.

The company was founded by hockey player Tim Horton in 1964. The restaurant chain is now the largest in the country and supports many community charities and groups.

The coffee is available ground , instant or as disks for specialty coffee machines. You will be sure to think back fondly on your visit to Canada as you sip your morning brew.

4. Nanaimo Bars

If you haven’t heard of these yummy Canadian dessert bars, you are missing out!

Originating in the city of Nanaimo, British Columbia, these no-bake bars come in a variety of flavours like peanut butter or mocha.

Nanaimo bars consist of three layers: a base made from a wafer, ground nuts (walnuts, almonds, or pecans), and coconut; a custard icing middle layer; and topped off with a layer of rich chocolate ganache.

These sweet treats can be found in most grocery stores across the country.

5. Butter Tarts

Butter tarts are one of my absolute favourite sweet treats and quintessentially Canadian. Hubby would call it my obsession!

Originating in the early 1900s, you will find the butter tart celebrated all over Ontario with various festivals dedicated solely to this sticky creation.

Nowadays, you will not only find plain or raisin-filled butter tarts, but you can find maple flavour (of course!), pecan, oreo, mocha, peanut butter, and the list goes on!

In fact, we have come across entire bakeries and festivals in various Canadian cities dedicated just to butter tarts!

While many of the flavours are awesome, I would have to say that the original or the maple (of course!) are my faves.

6. Laura Secord Chocolate

One of Canada’s largest and most well-known chocolatiers is Laura Secord.

You will find Laura Secord chocolate shops all over the country, selling delicious seasonal offerings as well as a variety of truffles and specialty chocolate bars.

This Toronto-based company opened its doors in 1913, taking its name from a Canadian War of 1812 heroine, Laura Secord.

I grew up eating these truffles as well as enjoying Laura Secord chocolates at Easter and in my Christmas Stockings. Definitely nostalgic for me.

7. Saskatoon Berry Jam

Saskatoon Berry Jam is definitely unique. We can almost guarantee, that you will have a difficult time finding this flavour anywhere outside of Canada.

Originating in Saskatchewan , Saskatoon berries can be found throughout the Canadian prairies.

We brought home several jars from both Manitoba and Saskatchewan during our travels.

The berries themselves look a lot like blueberries but have a sweet, nutty almond flavour. It’s a unique and absolutely delicious jam, especially served with scones!

8. Wild Blueberry Fruit Syrup

This stuff is what dreams are made of! Perfect on pancakes, waffles, ice cream, or even right off the spoon, wild blueberry syrup is a sweet treat from PEI.

You can find small bottles in some of the local grocery stores, as well as in specialty shops. If you know someone who loves blueberries, this would make the perfect souvenir.

9. Canadian Potato Chips

Many tourists (and some Canadians too) don’t realize just how many potato chips are Canadian, and can’t be found outside of this country!

With that being said, people visiting Canada who have developed a taste for our snacks may want to stock up before they leave!

Ketchup chips, All-Dressed chips and Hickory Sticks are probably the most notable examples of extremely popular Canadian snacks that you can’t find outside of the country.

10. Smarties

Smarties are small milk chocolates coated in a colourful candy shell, much like regular M&Ms.

You can find the boxes in a variety of sizes, and often, in a variety of colours to match the season (pastels for Easter for example).

Only our youngest son, Mr. Bump, is pretty much the only one in our family who will eat them. And while Hubby and I loved the Smarties jingle from the 80s, we will stick to the peanut M&Ms, thank you.

11. Chocolate Bars

Just like with the potato chip flavours, we also have a few types of chocolate bars that can’t be found outside of Canada. Even I am guilty of not knowing how many of these brands were Canadian!

Many of these include some of my favourite chocolate bars too. From Mr. Big to Caramilk, Crispy Crunch, Coffee Crisp, Wunderbar, and Aero, I love them all!

12. Smoked Salmon

Smoked salmon is definitely the perfect gift for a seafood lover. Whether you travel to our East or West Coast, you will find an abundance of this cured meat.

You can find smoked salmon in most grocery stores or online . And don’t forget to try the maple-flavoured smoked salmon – it’s awesome!

13. Canadian Meat

If you are a meat-eater, then giving Canadian dried meats a taste is a definite must.

Made by Mennonite communities and other Canadian farmers, you will find a variety of these savoury snacks all over the country.

From summer sausage to beef jerky, pepperettes, and grass-fed bison sticks (Mr. Bump’s fave), these delicious dried meats are the perfect foodie gift to bring home from your visit to Canada.

14. Canadian Cookbooks

Our oldest, Miss Sunshine, collects cookbooks from many of the places that she has travelled to. Makes sense as she is a chef.

But it’s a great way to bring back a little of the country’s culture . Especially if you have fallen in love with some of the cuisine.

Whether you prefer a book about desserts, cocktails, entrees, or even a food guide to some of Canada’s best eateries , there are so many awesome books that you can choose from.

Best Canadian-Made Alcohol

Canadian-made alcohol can be another souvenir you may want to consider bringing home with you. Of course, there is a limit to how much you can travel with, so keep that in mind.

15. Canadian Wine

Home to both the Niagara Peninsula and the Okanagan Valley, Canada has a pretty great reputation for producing incredible wines.

Our climate provides the perfect growing conditions, resulting in an excellent selection of wines to choose from.

One of our favourite outings is the Sip of the Season event held in Niagara Falls every autumn. It’s the best way for us to sample new wines.

16. Ice Wine

One of my favourites on our list of Canadian-made alcohol is Ice Wine. This sweet dessert wine comes from the Niagara region and is incredibly delicious.

It is called Ice Wine because the grapes are left to freeze naturally on the vine.

Once the outside temperatures remain between -10 and -12 °C for a stretch of time, the grapes are harvested and pressed while still frozen.

This yields a sweet, concentrated juice that is then put through the fermentation process to create Ice Wine.

And because Ontario has the optimal growing conditions, Canada is able to produce some of the best Ice Wines in the world.

17. Blueberry Wine

One of my favourite finds while travelling across Canada was Blueberry wine. No surprise really, considering how much I loved the blueberry syrup I mentioned above!

We have found the wine in New Brunswick, PEI, and here in Ontario.

Blueberry wine is considered semi-sweet and has a very unique fruit-forward flavour. It is delicious!

Blueberry wine is sold in grocery stores on the East Coast, and at a cranberry farm in Bala. I’m guessing it can also be found in other spots in Canada as well.

18. Canadian Beer

If you prefer beer to a glass of wine, consider taking home some of Canada’s most popular brews.

Molson Canadian, Budweiser and Labatt Blue are some of the most beloved Canadian beers.

Of course, our country is also filled with small craft breweries that produce some incredible beer.

19. Canadian Whisky

Now if spirits are more your thing, Canada is also known for producing some incredible whiskey.

Canadian Club, Hiram Walker, JP Wiser’s, Crown Royal, and Forty Creek, are all brands you might want to sample or take home with you.

20. Canadian Ciders

Often referred to as the Niagara Fruit Belt, the Niagara region produces 90% of Ontario’s fruit.

Craft ciders can be found all over the country in a variety of flavours including apple and pear.

These delicious concoctions are commonly sold in liquor stores as well as grocery stores.

One of our favourites comes from Muskoka Lakes Farm & Winery. Home of the Bala Cranberry Festival and the winery’s gorgeous  outdoor skate trail  in the winter, their cranberry cider is absolutely incredible!

21. Ceasar Mix

One drink I could never get on board with is the Caesar . Invented in 1969 by Walter Chell in Calgary, Alberta, the drink is Canada’s answer to a Bloody Mary.

Slightly different, a Caesar is made with Clamato juice, vodka, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, celery salt and hot sauce. It is often seen served with brunch.

Given that Canadians drink more than 400 million Caesars annually, it has actually become our national drink!

22. Ungava Gin

Hubby is a gin drinker, so he definitely knows his stuff. When I asked him to tell me his favourite brand of Canadian-made gin, Ungava was a clear winner.

Produced from six artic botanicals that are hand-foraged in Northern Quebec, this gin is unique in both its flavour and signature yellow colour.

You can easily find Ungava in Canadian Liquor stores, as well as in Duty-free shops.

23. Caribou

Another favourite alcoholic beverage of Hubby’s is Caribou. Found only in Quebec, Caribou can be enjoyed either hot or cold.

Caribou is a sweet French-Canadian alcoholic beverage made up of red wine, rye whiskey and maple syrup.

We discovered it during a family trip to the Quebec Winter Carnival. It’s pretty strong, and will definitely keep you warm during our freezing Canadian winters!

Caribou can be purchased at any SAQ in Quebec (their government-run liquor store).

Best Indigenous Souvenirs from Canada

With Canada being home to such a rich Indigenous culture, it stands to reason that this type of souvenir would be popular and meaningful.

24. Dream Catchers

One of the kids’ most cherished souvenirs from our adventures through the Canadian prairies is the dream catcher we purchased at Wanuskewin Heritage Park in Saskatchewan.

Often one of the most recognizable forms of Indigenous art, dream catchers are lightweight and easy to pack for travel.

They come in different sizes, colours, and designs, making it easy to choose just the perfect one.

25. Indigenous History or Story Books

Books are always a favourite souvenir for our family, though not always a very practical one.

When the kids learn about something new that really captures their attention, they usually try to find a book to take home with them.

During one of our road trips, the kids learned some Indigenous stories behind a few of the constellations . They were hooked! And so, a book found its way into our suitcase!

26. Indigenous Art

Indigenous art from Canada’s First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples can be incredibly beautiful, symbolic, and meaningful.

It can be a wonderful Canadian souvenir for both yourself or as a gift for someone special.

Another popular and very recognizable piece of Indigenous art is an Inukshuk .

My kids have Lobster stuffies from Nova Scotia , Puffins from Newfoundland , and Polar Bears from Churchill .

You can find some really great children’s books about Canada.

From interesting facts to Indigenous stories and everything in between, books are easy to pack but can get a little heavy.

33. Canada Puzzle

Puzzles are a great way to keep kids busy. Adults too!

Whether it’s a picture of your favourite Canadian landmark , a gorgeous landscape scene, or even a mosaic of your favourite Canadian foods or national parks , puzzles bring joy to people of all ages.

And what better way to reminisce, than to spend time as a family working on a puzzle featuring a special place in Canada!

Our favourite is the puzzle we bought with all the Ontario Parks Patches. We collect patches from all the campgrounds that we visit, so it’s a perfect reminder of our travels!

Our kids would tell you that magnets are hands-down the best souvenirs out there.

Magnets are easy to find, come in a ton of different styles and colours, are relatively inexpensive, and are easy to find in EVERY gift shop across the country.

The kids always ask for a magnet when we explore a new place.

Of course, we own a variety of Canadian flags. From using them on our camper to Canada flag bunting for our porch, and even flag tags on our luggage, we proudly display our flags whenever possible.

42. Hudson’s Bay Blanket

These iconic striped blankets are instantly recognizable all over the country!

The Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) dates back to May 1670 and holds the title of the oldest incorporated company in the English-speaking world.

Although HBC was a fur trading business for most of its history, the company now owns and operates nearly 250 department stores in Canada and the United States. Hudson’s Bay, Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks OFF 5TH all fall under the HBC umbrella.

One of my absolute favourite souvenirs to buy are Christmas ornaments .

I always try to find a unique ornament from places we travel to, and that includes different parts of Canada .

Considering Canada is called the Great White North, a snowglobe may be pretty representative of our country, eh?

I can almost guarantee that you will find at least one snowglobe in the gift shop of any major attraction that you visit.

My favourite is my tiny snow globe with polar bears. Reminds me of our awesome time spent in Churchill, Manitoba.

45. Amythyst Stones

Amethysts are gorgeous purple-coloured crystals that are found in abundance in Northern Ontario.

With several mines located just outside of Thunder Bay , it’s no wonder that you can find some beautiful creations made from this stone.

From jewellery to beads , sculptures, crystal cluster stones and Reiki Chakra stones , there are any number of souvenirs you can purchase made from this purple beauty.

46. Starbucks Been There Mugs

Starbucks mugs are pretty much the only thing I bring back on my travels that is just for me.

In Canada, you will find the ‘ Been There ‘ series of Starbucks mugs. Most provinces and many of the major cities will have one.

These are great souvenirs to have as you can reminisce about your fabulous Canadian adventure while sipping your morning coffee!

47. National Park Patches or Coins

If you are planning to visit one of Canada’s 38 National Parks, then purchasing a park patch or a park coin is a great option.

Not only are the patches relatively inexpensive, but they take up almost no room in your luggage.

During our trip to Grasslands National Park, we picked up a National Park Coin.

You can find pins, patches, and even stickers at the park’s visitor’s centre.

There are so many iconic scenes of Canada that you can find in poster form. Places like Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, the Cabot Trail, and man-made structures like the CN Tower, to name just a few.

I have framed photos of our travels all over our home. They are some of my favourite souvenirs. I have also created several photobooks of our travels that are treasured family keepsakes.

If you are planning to travel all through Canada like we have, then a push-pin map of Canada would be the perfect keepsake.

These maps allow you to put a push-pin in all the places that you have been. It really is a conversation piece and a fun way to keep track of your travels.

You can purchase relatively inexpensive maps from Amazon that allow you to scratch off the places you have visited.

In our case, we went with something a little more expensive. Our push-pin map is framed and customized. And while ours is of the whole world, you can find just maps of Canada.

50. Sticker Maps

This is pretty similar to the push-pin or scratch-off maps I listed above, except that this map is made of stickers .

We found out about these maps through the RV community. Since we are now camping trailer owners, this is something that we definitely wanted to have.

Each province and territory has a sticker. When you travel to that place, you just add it to the Canada map outline. Voila! It’s easy to see where you have been.

We have 7 teams in the National Hockey League (NHL), so you have plenty of options!

Both Hubby and our younger son, Mr. Bump, were over the moon when they were given Toronto Maple Leaf jerseys this year as gifts.

Our younger daughter, Miss Somersault, loves socks. In fact, if you are a regular to our blog, you will notice pretty quickly her vast collection!

We have found destination-themed socks, like the chocolate-themed socks from the Hershey store in Niagara Falls. Or socks with Indigenous artwork. Let’s not forget the sports team socks that my entire family owns!

We have seen bookmarks in gift shops all over the country. They depict everything from Indigenous artwork to famous landscapes, animals, landmarks, foods, and even cartoon characters.

65. Canada Postage Stamps

Collecting stamps is definitely an old-school hobby. But believe it or not, some people still do it.

Stamps are easy to find at any postal outlet. If you are looking for something special, you may have to order them online through the Canada Post website.

You can find anything from special occasion stamps like Christmas or Diwali, hockey stamps, Indigenous Leaders, Canadians in Flight, and more.

66. Postcards

Yes. Postcards are really old-school, but I still love them. I like to frame some of mine to make an interesting collage or conversation piece.

Whenever we travel abroad, we always use our Canada luggage tags . Call it patriotic pride, but they are also quite practical.

I know a lot of people who collect shot glasses, so this souvenir idea may be a no-brainer You can easily find shot glasses in a variety of shapes and sizes, colours and themes, in pretty much every souvenir shop you go to.

We only own a few. And the ones we have were given to us as part of an experience. Like the shot glasses from Newfoundland when we were “Screeched In.”

You can find these at any grocery store in Canada. They’re the perfect souvenir for a long car ride or plane trip.

I’ve done taste tests with friends using these, and they were shocked that it doesn’t really taste like ketchup (that’d make for quite a soggy chip!).

In fact, they taste more like vinegar and tomato mixed, with a lovely tanginess that cuts through the sweetness. It makes it easier to eat a whole bag in one sitting!

17. All Dressed Chips

These were my favourite chips growing up.

All Dressed chips are literally that: a mix of all of the flavours of other chips left over at the chip factory (or that’s the legend anyway of how they came to be). They are actually a mix of about 9 flavours that leaves a tangy, unknowable flavour you can only get from these chips.

My favourite are the All Dressed Ruffles chips.

18. Canadian Kit Kat Bars

I didn’t know these were unique to Canada until listening to the “My Favourite Murder” podcast – who made Canadian Kit Kats a whole segment of their show after their first time trying them.

Our Kit Kat bars are supposed to be better quality than the US.

20. Smarties

In the US, Smarties are a chalky candy (we call them “Rockets”). In Canada, they’re kind of like an M&M.

But it’s somehow completely different.

These aren’t the best candy in the world, but the chocolate buttons coated in a candy shell and brightly coloured are very fun to eat. We used to do basic math with them in school to help motivate us to actually care about addition.

Maple sugar is incredible. I’ve never tasted anything like it anywhere else.

In Canada, we sell maple sugar in the shape of maple leaves. It can be chewed, melted in your mouth, or both!

I love bringing a box of these to offices when I used to work in offices around the world as a treat. People are mystified by maple sugar!

Maple tea is a bit of an acquired taste, but it’s worth trying if you like maple syrup.

It’s made with black tea and flavoured with, you guessed it, maple syrup.

25. Caesar Mix

One of the classic Canadian cocktails that was invented in the True North is the Caesar.

It’s essentially the same as a Bloody Mary, except you use Clamato juice (half tomato, half clam) instead of tomato juice.

To make the drink at home, you can get caesar mix from any of the liquor stores in Canada . We even sell sturdy cans of Clamato juice at the grocery store.

Combine it with vodka for a lovely brunch beverage.

I know Clamato juice sounds weird, but if you don’t know what’s in it, you’d just think it’s a slightly vinegar-y Bloody Mary.

26. Smoked Salmon

Salmon is basically a national food in Canada. I didn’t actually realize that until I moved to New Zealand and found out that it costs like 4x as much to eat it there!

In Canada, salmon are plentiful and eaten constantly.

I highly recommend checking out local smoked salmon as a souvenir from Canada. It’s preserved so it lasts longer and is usually allowed through customs when you leave the country.

Smoked salmon is very thinly sliced salmon that is either dry smoked over wood chips or cold smoked with ice.

It’s great on bagels with cream cheese, with eggs, or in a salad.

Tip: Before you decide that this if one of the best gifts you want to take home, check to ensure you can bring fish into your country from abroad!

27. Butter Tarts

Growing up on the Eastern side of Canada, I think butter tarts beat Nanaimo bars every day of the week! However, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Butter tarts are made in a pastry shell. The inside is a combination of butter, sugar, syrup and eggs that becomes a delightfully gooey filling. It’s a bit like British treacle in its dark colour.

They can be served with or without nuts. In my opinion, only nutters would eat them with raisins.

Grab a pack from any bakery or even the grocery store and take them home to share with your family (if you don’t eat them all on the plane).

28. Local Honey

When I was a kid, I used to love going to the farmer’s market with my Mom and getting a big tub of honey. I kept doing it at university – and used the excuse that it was to help with my allergies to justify the cost.

I would go through it so quickly because we put it on everything!

Honey is a great way to sweeten things like tea or oatmeal without using sugar.

If you have the opportunity, buy local honey from a local producer at a farmer’s market or beekeeper. It will be fresher and more delicious than anything you can find in the store.

It’s not as famous as Manuka Honey, but Ontario and Nova Scotian honey are some of the best I’ve ever tasted!

29. Crown Royal Canadian Whiskey

Canadians grow up on Crown Royal Whiskey. It may even be illegal to have any other whiskey as your first taste of the amber spirit.

Crown Royal comes in a stunning bottle that makes it look WAY fancier than it is. But your friends back home don’t need to know that this is a standard whiskey and not something way more spenny, right?

Empress gin is new on the market so they aren’t super well known yet. This gin is made from the butterfly-pollinated gardens of the Fairmont Empress in Vancouver , BC. They pollinate the flowers, creating an interesting purple hue to the gin.

I got to sample the 80th bottle when I was a bartender in Muskoka and fell in love. I don’t even like gin!

I will preface this by saying, I don’t like Canada Goose as a company and I’m actually allergic to their jackets.

These very expensive jackets are perfectly made for the -30C temperatures I’ve faced while living in Ottawa .

Lululemon is a popular Canadian brand that’s known for their amazing yoga pants.

Visiting Canada and Canadian Tourism

Over 18 million foreigners visit Canada every year making tourism an over $80 billion-a-year Canadian industry — bigger than lumber, fishing, and farming combined. So why not join in?

The Government of Canada spends a lot of effort promoting Canadian tourism through a variety of websites and social media accounts, including Instagram — as seen here. The current slogan is "Canada: Keep Exploring" with "explorecanada" their most widely used user name and hashtag.

Why come to Canada?

Canada is a large, diverse country with a lot going for it, but most tourists are drawn to a few of the same things:

Nature — Canada is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, full of picturesque forests, mountains, and lakes that make it a fantastic place for camping, hiking, or just wandering around and admiring.

Winter Sports — Canada’s snowy climate and mountainous geography has produced no shortage of must-visit parks and resorts for anyone interested in skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, or any other activity best enjoyed in the cold.

Cities — Canada is home to several large, modern cities that anyone with a taste for urban life will be able to appreciate.

Cost  — The Canadian dollar is generally quite weak in comparison to other currencies, which make it a very affordable option for people without too much money in their travel budgets.

The rest of this chapter deals with general information about traveling to Canada. For more information on things to see and do in Canada’s four most popular tourist destinations, please see the specific chapters on British Columbia tourism , Alberta tourism , Ontario tourism , and Quebec tourism .

What language do they speak in Canada?

Foreigners are sometimes confused by Canada’s language situation. Officially, Canada has two official languages , French and English. However, this is mostly just a matter of government policy. The vast majority of Canadians only speak English, and lack even basic skills in French. French-speaking tourists should not expect to speak French in cities like Vancouver, Toronto, or Calgary.

The capital city of Ottawa is more functionally bilingual than most Canadian cities, and all museums and government-related attractions will feature signs and brochures in both French and English. Staff at popular attractions will likely be fluently bilingual as well, as will many employees of popular stores and restaurants. It helps to ask, however.

The famous city of Montreal , in the province of Quebec , is the most bilingual city in Canada and most residents, particularly those who live and work in the downtown core, can speak fluent French and English. It is not considered controversial in Montreal to speak either French or English to a stranger and assume the other person will understand. In other parts of Quebec, however, rates of English fluency are much lower and it may be considered offensive to speak English to a stranger without first asking for permission.

Downsides of Canada

To avoid unhappy surprises, would-be tourists to Canada should be aware of the following potential disappointments before they go:

Bad weather — Unless you are specifically traveling to enjoy winter activities (see above), there are generally only a few months of the year (usually around June to September) in which Canada’s weather will be mild enough to enjoy. Canadian winters, and even parts of spring and fall, are often cold, dark, snowy, and wet, which can make tourist activities difficult or unpleasant.

Long travel distances — Canada is an enormous country and its main cities are all spread quite far apart from each other. Tourists, particularly European tourists unfamiliar with the vastness of North America, are sometimes disappointed to learn that they will probably only be able to see a rather small part of Canada on their trip. Visiting multiple major Canadian cities on a single vacation — for example, Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal — would be extremely time-consuming and likely cost thousands of dollars in domestic travel alone.

“America Jr.” — Some tourists are disappointed to discover that Canada is extremely similar to the United States . Travelers familiar with America should not expect to encounter a strikingly different culture in Canada. Stores, brands, food, entertainment and so on will be overwhelmingly American. Though the international press likes to emphasize Canada as being a more “liberal” country than the US, Canadians will probably not seem very different from Americans in day-to-day encounters.

Sick travelers.

Travelers from certain countries will need to be cleared by a medical exam as part of their application process before they can visit Canada. During times when there's a global panic over the spread of a particular infectious disease, such as the SARS scare of 2003 or the Ebola scare of 2014, visitors who display worrying symptoms may be detained by border authorities and sent to a hospital for quarantining.

How to Visit Canada

Customs and visas.

Canada does not treat all international visitors the same; citizens of certain countries will have an easier time entering Canada than others. All foreign visitors to Canada, however, must bring a valid passport from their home country.

Residents of the United States have the easiest entry to Canada, and don’t require anything other than a passport to get in. Residents of Great Britain, western Europe, and a few other countries have to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization ( ETA ) before they can enter. This is a very easy process that only takes a couple of minutes and should be done online  before you leave. Once completed, an ETA lasts for five years or until you get a new passport.

Residents of countries not covered by the ETA program can only visit Canada after obtaining a short-term visitor’s visa . Applications can be done online, through the mail, or at an overseas Canadian consulate. They take a couple weeks to process and usually cost around $200. For more information, see the Government of Canada’s visitor eligibility questionnaire .

It is illegal for anyone, from any country, to enter Canada to work or live without first obtaining a long-term visa , which are much more complicated to apply for, and take many months to be approved.

Crossing the Canadian Border

Anyone entering Canada from a foreign country by land, sea, or air — including Canadians themselves — are required to have an interview with a Canadian border guard at their point of entry so it can be determined they are a safe and legal visitor. Exactly how long and invasive this interview will be depends very much on where you are coming from, why you want to visit, whether you have completed any authorizations you may need, and how clearly you communicate these facts. It pays to be honest, cooperative, and informed.

It should be remembered that while foreigners enjoy various legal rights after they enter Canada (see below), no foreigner has the right to get into Canada just because they want to. Canadian border guards have the power to deny anyone entry to Canada for any reason. Possessing a criminal record, a history of subversive political activity, dangerous diseases, suspicions of drug trafficking, or just broadly suspicious behavior are all common grounds for refusal of entry to Canada.

Ever since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 Canadian security forces have been extra vigilant about terrorist threats, particularly from the Islamic world. Would-be visitors from the Middle East or parts of Africa, or those with a history of visiting such places, may find themselves subject to increased scrutiny.

Visitors to Canada are expected to hand a completed Declaration Card to a border guard in order to cross the border. These cards, which ask basic questions about the visitor and their trip, are usually handed out on airplanes or trains. Visitors who cross a land border usually have to just tell the information to the guard.

Bringing Goods to Canada

It is illegal for foreigners to bring products into Canada to sell without first going through the complex procedures for engaging in international commerce . If you cross the border with more stuff than a reasonable person would assume you need for a trip, the authorities may conclude you are probably intending to illegally sell goods. The only exception is a maximum  $60 worth of “ gifts .”

Tobacco and liquor products are counted separately, and foreigners can bring a fair bit of both into Canada. The current tobacco limit is quite generous; you can bring up to 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, and 200 grams of tobacco, if you so choose. The liquor limit is stricter: you can only bring 1.5 litres of wine, 1.13 litres of another liquor, or a 24-pack of beer. Bringing food products into Canada is generally a hassle, as there are very specific rules and limitations for just about every type.

Dangerous goods, like guns , other weapons , and fireworks can be imported, but have their own particular rules. A few very specific things are likewise banned in Canada for safety reasons and are thus illegal to bring into the country, such as certain kinds of kites and baby products. A complete list can be found on the Canadian Government’s official prohibited consumer products list . It’s also illegal to import what the government describes as  “obscenity and hate propaganda ” which includes any movies, books, comics, or magazines that contain, in the opinion of the border guard, overly hateful, perverted, gory, terroristic, or violent content.

Traveling Inside Canada

Laws for foreigners.

This should hopefully go without saying, but foreigners have to obey Canadian laws while in Canada. Those who do otherwise can be charged, arrested, sentenced, and imprisoned just like Canadians. At the same time, the legal protections granted to Canadians by the Canadian Constitution also apply to foreigners visiting the country. This includes the right to avoid self-incrimination, the right to consult a lawyer, and the right to dispute before a judge any charges or fines imposed by a police officer.

Canada has extradition treaties with more than half the world’s countries , meaning foreigners who commit a crime in Canada but leave the country before they are caught or punished can be caught by local police and forced to return to Canada to face justice (and vice-versa). Only in very rare situations will a foreigner accused of a crime in Canada be tried and punished for it by their own country’s justice system.

Getting Around in Canada

Flights within Canada are notoriously expensive, with the average domestic flight costing at least $300, plus airport fees and taxes which usually add an additional $40 or so. The country has three national airlines, Air Canada  (airline codes: 014, AC or ACA, part of the Star Alliance airline coalition) and  WestJet  (838, WS, WJA, part of its own 16-airline alliance ) which are largely domestic, and  Air Transat   (649, TS, TSC) which is mostly international. Canada does not have a major discount or budget airline, though in recent years the major airlines have been experimenting with budget spin-offs, such as Air Canada Rouge and Westjet’s Swoop . Flights to northern Canada , and especially within northern Canada, are extremely expensive, often a thousand dollars or more, and to get to certain remote regions travelers must use a special northern airline or a chartered flight.

Every major Canadian city has its own international airport , and many smaller cities too. There are also several considerably smaller regional or domestic airports that exclusively service flights between Canadian cities. Most of Canada’s big city airports are located around 20 kilometers from their city’s downtown core, or about a 30 minute drive. Vancouver and Toronto have trains that go directly from the airport to downtown.

• Security Screening at Canadian Airports, Canadian Air Transport Security Authority

The railroad played an important role in Canadian  history , but trains have now become among the slowest, most expensive ways to travel the country. While trains can be a somewhat convenient way for tourists to travel between large Canadian cities located relatively close to each other, air travel or driving remains much more popular, and may even be cheaper.

VIA Rail is Canada’s primary passenger train service, offering direct service from Vancouver to Toronto (at over 4,000 km, one of the longest train trips in the entire world!), Toronto to Montreal, and Montreal to Atlantic Canada, with stops in all significant cities along the way. Traveling between the axis of Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal is a popular route. A cross-country Canadian train ride, from one end of the country to the other, will take about four days and cost around $500-$800.

VIA Rail’s Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal stations also offer connecting trips to the United States, via Amtrak . Anyone driving a car or motorcycle in Canada must possess a valid driver’s license . A foreign driver’s license will generally be recognized as valid by the police if it can be read by them, which is to say, if it has English text on it. Car and Bus Travel

Canada is united by a massive cross-country highway known as the Trans-Canada Highway  that extends 7,821 km from the farthest western portion of British Columbia to the farthest eastern part of Newfoundland. It is primarily a west-east corridor, however. Though the Trans-Canada highway does have some northern forks, these do not go very far and none reach Canada’s  northern territories . Every province has its own highway system as well, and these often merge into portions of the Trans-Canada highway. Through a combination of national and provincial highways, virtually every part of Canada is reachable by road travel, though in many cases drive times will be incredibly long.

Many tourists enjoy traveling between Canadian cities by charter buses , which are large, comfortable buses featuring modern amenities such as bathrooms and WiFi. In eastern Canada, Greyhound is the dominant charter bus line. Other provinces are serviced by various regional bus companies.

Public Transportation

Most large Canadian cities have relatively sophisticated public transportation systems, with some combination of bus, light-rail train, monorail, subway, street car, and ferry services that can be used to navigate most of the downtown core and surrounding areas. The exact combination of services will vary from city to city (as will the cost of tickets and passes). In most cases, public transportation does not travel to rural areas, though some rural communities may have their own public transportation system.

Shopping in Canada

Canadians use the Canadian dollar (symbol: $ ) to pay for goods and services, which can be obtained at any ATM machine, which can be found at banks, shopping centres, corner stores, and many other public places. Most Canadian ATMs will accept foreign bank cards, though withdrawal fees can be high. Some smaller, independently-run shops will have a strict “cash only” policy, but these days, most Canadian business will actually prefer to do transactions through credit or debit cards . Visa and Mastercard are the most commonly-used credit card brands in Canada, and many shops will not accept other kinds — though some will, making it a good idea to ask ahead of time.

US dollars are often accepted at Canadian stores, particularly in tourist-heavy areas. Some places may have a policy of accepting US dollars “at face value,” however, meaning American money will not be accepted at its exchange rate worth, but rather treated as if it was worth as much as Canadian money, which is a bad deal.

Foreigners will be charged sales tax on every purchase they make in Canada, through special “value-added tax” known as GST and either PST or HST . Canada does not have a rebate program allowing foreigners to get a refund for the GST, PST, or HST they spend in Canada.

Challenges, dangers and annoyances when visiting Canada

Medical costs.

Though Canada offers generous public healthcare insurance, you have to be some form of long-term, legal Canadian resident before the government will pay for your hospital visits or operations. Non-residents will be billed full cost for any medical service performed while in Canada, which is why it always pays to get travelers’ medical insurance .

Canada has some of the world’s cleanest tap water and strict laws to ensure the cleanliness and safety of any meat, dairy, or poultry products sold at restaurants or grocery stores.

No foreigner will be denied emergency medical service in Canada, though if they have no insurance they will later face a hefty bill. In addition to hospital admittance and treatment, the uninsured should be prepared to pay full cost for things like ambulance rides and hospital beds. Staying Safe in Canada

Canada is generally a safe country, but it has some dangerous places. Every large Canadian city will have a couple of “bad neighborhoods” where criminals tend to congregate and locals generally avoid — particularly after dark — for fear of being harassed, robbed, or assaulted. Unfortunately, these neighborhoods can often be located close to tourist areas, and may seek to take advantage of the obviously confused or foreign. At the same time, most serious, violent crime in Canada tends to occur between people who know each other. Visitors who act confident and use caution and common sense should have little to fear.

Leaving belongings unattended in any public place is generally considered a high-risk activity, and though some businesses may store forgotten items in a “ lost and found ” collection of lost property, the police — and indeed, most Canadians — will generally be unsympathetic to victims of theft caused by inattentive behavior. People generally lock up their homes, cars, and bicycles before leaving them unsupervised. In rare cases, tourists and locals may be targeted by scam artists looking to cheat them out of money. In big cities, most scams are quite brazen, and usually take the form of a stranger asking for money on some sympathetic pretext, such as a phony personal emergency or phony charity. In some cases, a thief may attempt to quietly sell stolen goods to a stranger. Beggars can be common in some large Canadian cities as well. Many Canadians regard them with indifference, believing them to be scam artists.

The police can be called anytime in Canada by dialing 9-1-1 on the telephone. Canadian police are obligated to treat crimes committed against foreigners exactly the same as crimes against Canadians.

Located on the top floor of the Swissotel Tower, the view will have you hooked even before your drinks show up. You have a 360 degree panorama of the city and look straight down at the Moscow River.

Not only is the view amazing, the service is prompt and courteous, the food is amazing and the cocktails are fantastic. Choose your drink from 17 pages of the cocktail menu, or just go straight for the signature drink: Moscow Spring Punch (vodka, honey, raspberry, ginger and lime). For all of these reasons, City Space wins awards year after year and is often voted the best bar in the city. Reserve a table if you won’t be arriving early as this is one of the most popular bars in Moscow and often fills up before 9:00 pm.

Small and social, if you come early you’ll find yourself sitting with local residents who appreciate the family-feel of the place. Another award-winning bar, you’ll also meet up with travellers from all over the world who have stopped in for an afternoon drink to enjoy the ambience.

The location is fairly convenient for sightseers who will surely appreciate the food as much as the incredible cocktails. Hang around for a while and you’ll see the clientele change from the working crowd to hipsters who want to have a great time without loud music.

Delicatessen

A businessman’s bar, the Deli is tucked into the basement of building 20 on Sadovaya-Karatnaya Street. Even though you’re there for the vodka, come hungry so you can sample some of the incredible food on the menu.

The owners make infusions and barrel-aged cocktails right on the premises, which allows the Deli to offer an ever-changing cocktail menu with flavours not found anywhere else. In fact, the best beverage to order here is a sampler of shots featuring the current batch of infusions.

Practice your Russian with the bartender and he’ll give you all the insider’s tips on what’s going on in the city that day. This difficult-to-find bar is so pleasant that you may find yourself returning the next evening for a few more of those infusion shots.

The interior of this bar is decorated with eclectic furniture and accessories from all over the world, creating a lively, cheerful atmosphere that feels like something between a luxury train station and your great-aunt's living room.

It is made up of two large rooms connected by a hallway that has nothing but a bar table. The odd mix of styles attracts artistic and educated people who enjoy a good conversation as much as they enjoy one of the excellent cocktails the Projektor serves. The signature drink is gin, not vodka, but nothing says you have to stop at one…

Strelka Bar

Part of the Strelka Institute, the bar is a mix of Scandinavian and Italian design from the 70s' – read: shiny chrome and a lot of plastic. Don’t be put off by first impressions; this is one of the hippest, liveliest bars in the city.

The customers are younger as many of the patrons are students at the institute that houses the bar. This almost guarantees that you’ll find someone that speaks your language and would love to spend hours with you discussing art, politics or music.

On a warm evening, choose a seat on the terrace overlooking the river and listen to the jazz drifting out from inside as you sip your vodka. If you’re feeling philanthropic, have another drink – proceeds from the bar help support the institute.

Within walking distance of Red Square, Duma is hidden down an alley in a basement, so it can be a bit difficult to find. They have live music several days a week and the crowd is young enough to find the Soviet-era décor delightful and charming.

The tourists that manage to ferret out the bar find themselves surrounded by Muscovites having a rocking night oute. This is the place to come if you want to have a real Russian experience and enjoy a local nightclub. Summer visitors have the advantage of veranda seating - a bit removed from the music and crowds but with a prime view of the ping pong table and the endless matches.

One of the oldest cocktail bars in the city with one of the longest drink menus around, Tema is lively and inexpensive. You could consider visiting as soon as you arrive in Moscow as the bar is open 24 hours a day, or plan an evening with friends to try several rounds of the cocktails.

The bartenders encourage frivolity and dancing, often inviting patrons to dance on the bar (wearing a hard hat… just in case) or on the wide windowsills. Need to take a break? Head downstairs and curl up on one of the cushy sofas for a few minutes before gathering your courage to head back to the dance floor. Don’t expect a relaxing evening here, but you can plan on great food and a lot of fun.

Why a Buc-ee's near Memphis is a big deal: What the travel center is known for and how it could impact West Tennessee

Tennessee set to have the third most Buc-ee's locations in the U.S. with the newest addition planned for the western part of the state.

Senator Page Walley, R-Savannah, announced the store's plans to hit West Tennessee with their newest rest center on Wednesday. In his announcement, there was a memo detailing the 74,000 square foot travel center that will come to West Tennessee in the future, but why is this such a big deal?

For those unfamiliar with Buc-ee's and all it has to offer, we have listed a few reasons as to why this is a big deal for West Tennessee, and it's not just because of the beaver nuggets.

What makes Buc-ee's so famous?

For starters, this new location will be the closest one to Memphis. As of right now, if someone from Memphis wanted to visit a Buc-ee's, they would have to travel to Leeds, Alabama which is a three-and-a-half hour drive. The closest Buc-ee's in Tennessee is in Crossville which is five hours from Memphis.

Buc-ee's only started branching outside of Texas in 2019 , so this will be an addition to the 14 stores that have opened in the last four years.

Even if you haven't heard of Buc-ee's, someone you know has. This is likely because of the cult-like following the chain has amassed over the last 40 years of business. In Instagram, #bucees has over 174,000 posts. Tiktok has over 64,000 videos that use #bucees. Facebook has numerous groups dedicated to the chain with one of the largest having more than 237,000 members.

For Fayette County, this Buc-ee's means a lot. Based on the memo from Senator Walley's post, Gallaway could expect to see a lot of revenue come through from travelers. It is estimated that 5.2 million people will come through the store annually with 80% of them coming from outside of the county. The starting pay for jobs at Buc-ee's is $17 to $19 an hour with benefits. This could draw people in from neighboring areas to come work at this new location.

And did we mention the giant beaver mascot walking around the store?

What is the most famous food at Buc-ee's?

Buc-ee's is most known for its beaver nuggets which come in a wide variety of flavors. If you don't know what a beaver nugget is, you're not alone. In the simplest terms, it is a puffed corn nugget that is seasoned or covered in different toppings. Some toppings include caramel, cinnamon, sea salt caramel, milk chocolate or white fudge. Seasonings can include savory flavors like white cheddar, spicy or habanero.

Along with the nuggets, Buc-ee's is well known for its barbecue brisket. With the company being based in Texas, you can expect to get some authentic brisket no matter the location. Each location offers prepared sandwiches including sliced or chopped brisket, turkey and sausage, after starting each day with an array of breakfast offerings including breakfast tacos that also contain their signature brisket.

Jerky is another of Buc-ee's more famous treats it offers. Stores offer both fresh and prepackaged jerky with flavors like peppered, teriyaki, sweet and spicy, garlic, Korean barbecue and ghost-pepper spicy.

Where is the new Buc-ee's location going to be?

The new location is going to be at exit 28 on Interstate 40 in Gallaway, Tennessee. This is about 20 minutes down the road from Ford's new BlueOval City that will be opening in in 2025.

It is a bit longer of a drive for those from Jackson or Memphis. The drive from Downtown Memphis will be about 35 to 40 minutes, and the drive from Jackson will be about an hour. These times will more than likely be extended during the first few months after opening.

Which Buc-ee's store is the largest?

According to Buc-ee's , the largest convenience store is right here in the Volunteer State. The Sevierville location holds the world record for largest convenience store at 74,707 square feet.

What should I get my first time at Buc-ee's?

While you can get any number of snacks and sweet treats for the road, did you know there is an entire half of the store dedicated to non-edible items? The store offers beaver shaped cups, t-shirts, barbecue rub and farmhouse décor to name a few items. From souvenir cups to Buc-ee hats to a surfboard named the Buc-ee Board, there is a lot to take in, or take home, when you first visit the store.

Canadian family receives wrong body after father died on Cuban vacation

LAVAL, Quebec (AP) — A family in Quebec is searching for answers after discovering that their father’s remains didn’t make it to Canada from Cuba, where he died while on vacation, and instead received the remains of another man.

Funerals for Faraj Allah Jarjour were scheduled for Sunday and Monday. Instead, his daughter Miriam Jarjour had been desperately calling and emailing as many officials as she can, trying to find his body.

“Up until now we have no answers,” Jarjour said. “Where is my father?”

Jarjour said she was swimming with her 68-year-old father in the ocean near Varadero, Cuba, during a family vacation on March 22 when he suddenly had a heart attack and died.

Because there were no medical facilities, his body was covered and left on a beach chair in the hot sun for more than eight hours until a car arrived to take it to Havana, Jarjour said.

After that, it’s not clear what happened.

Jarjour said she followed the directions given to her by the Canadian consulate, and paid $10,000 Canadian (US$7,300) to have the body returned home to the family.

However, the casket that arrived late last week contained the body of a Russian man who was at least 20 years younger than Jarjour’s father. Unlike her father, the body also had a full head of hair and tattoos.

Jarjour said the stranger’s body has been sent to his country, but she and her family don’t know where her father is.

When Jarjour contacted Canada’s consular authorities in Cuba, they blamed the company in the island that coordinates the return of the remains. Since then, she says she has been emailing other government officials, including her Member of Parliament, who has agreed to reach out to Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly.

“I’m honestly destroyed,” said Jarjour. “Up until now we have no answers. We’re waiting. I don’t know what to tell you.”

Jarjour described her father as an active man who didn’t smoke or drink. The Syrian-born family man was “always smiling,” she said.

The ordeal has left her mother exhausted, said Jarjour. She and her brother are struggling through their own grief while trying to get answers from authorities who all seem to deny responsibility.

So far, the family has spent $25,000 Canadian (US$18,248), including $15,000 Canadian (US$10,950) for funeral services that have been put on hold.

Global Affairs Canada said in an email that consular officials are working with Cuban authorities and the family to resolve the issue.

But Jarjour doesn’t feel she is getting the answers she needs and is hoping Joly will personally intervene to pressure Cuban authorities.

“What I want is someone to help me find my father,” she said.

Grumble Grumble

The things that piss me off., how to get a tourist visa to travel to russia from canada.

I’m going to Moscow in a couple of months, and we bought the tickets a while ago. More recently I’ve randomly discovered that I need a visa to travel to Russia. I’m glad I know people who know these things, it would have been very annoying to arrive there and be told we’re not allowed in. I’d expect Expedia to warn me, but no I guess they don’t do that.

Anyway, now that I’ve gone through the process I can say it’s very straightforward if you know what to do, and if you don’t – it feels like an impossible bureaucratic mess. So here’s a tutorial for getting a visa to go to Russia if you’re looking to do that.

There is some information here and here if you read russian but the guidance there is inadequate.

You start by filling out this application for the consulate . You won’t yet have everything you need yet but it doesn’t hurt to start, you can resume the application later. If you manage to screw up massively – don’t worry, at the end of that application you have to print it out and take it to the office, so at this point a mistake is not something to worry about.

Here are parts of the application that may be confusing and how to deal with them:

If you had USSR or Russian nationality at some time

The first really annoying thing. For Canadian-only citizens this is not an issue. But if you were born in the USSR – you may run into a problem like I have. The problem is that quite likely you have no documents left whatsoever from that time, so the options they give you don’t work:

• Prove that you’ve renounced your Russian citizenship: this proof may not exist if you left in the early 90s
• Visa to Israel: only works if that’s where you went
• Stamp in their passport saying… only works if you had a passport back then and still have it.

Neither of those worked for me. My parents went to Romania when I was 12, I had no passport, the romanians even replaced my birth certificate with a Romanian one. But it still says on my passport today that I was born in Moldova so I have to deal with this.

For me I chose “Yes” in answer to that question and for the details picked 01June1991: DISSOLUTION OF THE USSR. That’s the advice I was given at the Visa office. The only document I had to provide was the Landed Immigrant paper that was in my passport when I immigrated. Luckily I kept that even though I’m a citizen now.

Number of entries

You pick one. I don’t know what the point is in more than one but if that’s what you need – I can’t answer that question.

Date of entry into / exit from Russia

These have to match your actual dates. Mind that you may arrive on a different day than when you’re leaving. In the past visas were given out for a period of time unrelated to specific entrance/exit dates but that’s no longer the case.

Which institution you are going to visit?

This is the other annoying thing. The theory is that you’re going to use a russian travel agency for your trip and they will provide you with these numbers. But we weren’t going to use a travel agency – I speak russian and am perfectly able to find my way around – there’s plenty to see in Moscow without a pre-arranged tour.

But that’s not an option. Don’t worry, we’re not the only ones who ran into this. Basically what I did was look for hotels in the centre Moscow and several of them had “Visa Support” buttons. These take you to websites such as this one , where you pay approx. 35$ to get the paper you need for your visa. No other services are involved (hence the low price). After you pay for it (Credit Card via PayPal worked for me) you get the paper you need immediately in your email.

On that paper you have to find the reference number (it’s called reference number) and a confirmation number (top of the form on the left).

Medical insurance

I found a place online that said this is not needed for Canadian citizens, it’s mostly for people from the EU. Probably because they don’t have public health care systems in many of the EU countries.

Just in case though I put in one of my numbers from my Sunlife insurance from work.

Do you plan to stay anywhere (hotel, individual)

Doh, yes. You want to pick Hotel. If you pick Individual – I hear they have to go through hell on their end to get the paperwork done. Most likely you don’t need the hotel booked at this point. I didn’t but they said because we’re travelling with the whole family the consulate may ask for a reservation confirmation.

Education and work experience

I think the point of this is to figure out whether you’re planning to go to Russia to work or participate in some armed conflict. Make sure that you don’t and fill in the form appropriately. The details (addresses/phone numbers) don’t need to be precise.

Have you ever visited other countries in the past ten years?

Who the hell hasn’t? I put in one entry with a made-up date for the USA and one for Moldova. I don’t know how they expect me to figure out where I went when in the last 10 years.

That’s all the advice I have. Note that the people at the Visa office are actually quite nice and helpful, but they don’t answer their phone so you have to go there and talk to them. Note also that the visa office is just a processing centre – they don’t make any decisions. So ask them your questions, they’ll help you as best they can, but once your application is ready – it’s up to the guys at the consulate to decide.

And bring payment as cash or a money order, they don’t accept anything else there.

CFIF announces the establishment of the Collateral Infrastructure and Market Practices Advisory Group

Since the Global Financial Crisis, collateral management has shifted from primarily a credit risk mitigation process of managing assets pledged by one party to another to focusing on capital optimization. Recognizing the potential impact of this evolution on the efficiency of Canada's fixed income market, the Canadian Fixed-Income Forum ( CFIF ) today announced the establishment of the Collateral Infrastructure and Market Practices Advisory Group (CIMPA). CIMPA will promote the well-functioning of the Canadian securities and financing markets through improved operational efficiency, reduced market fragmentation, and industry coordination on related issues and initiatives. The goals are to:

• improve interconnectedness, standardization, and automation of securities flows;
• support market functioning through promotion of best practices for clearing, settlement, margining and risk management;
• facilitate broad adoption of the recently introduced Canadian Collateral Management Service (CCMS), Canada’s first tri-party service launched by TMX and Clearstream;
• provide an information hub on Canadian collateral developments;
• build consensus on relevant issues.

CIMPA is comprised of senior representatives from buy- and sell-side firms, custodians, prime brokers, and infrastructure providers and is co-chaired by Nicholas Chan (Managing Director and Head of Financial Resource Management, BMO Capital Markets) and Harri Vikstedt (Senior Policy Director, Market Committees and Initiatives, Bank of Canada).
