2024 has been an exciting year for The MICHELIN Guide , and today sees more buzz as Texas joins as the newest addition to the United States selection. Together with Travel Texas, the Lone Star State becomes the eleventh location to join the ever-growing list of North American destinations. And with award-winning barbecue, locally sourced seafood and steaks, and savory Tex-Mex, it's easy to see why our famously anonymous Inspectors couldn't wait to share their finds.

“The Texas culinary scene has proven to be an exhilarating one, with multicultural influences, homegrown ingredients, and talent that is rich in ambition,” says Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of The MICHELIN Guide. “Foodies and travel enthusiasts alike will find something to enjoy, with such a broad dining scene spanning farm-to-table dishes, fusion cuisine, upscale dining, and the famous Texas-style barbecue. Texas is a perfect fit for the MICHELIN Guide, based on the experiences of our anonymous Inspectors.” The first MICHELIN Guide Texas selection will be revealed later this year, and will feature culinary gems in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio.

About the process

The MICHELIN Guide’s anonymous Inspectors are already in the field, making dining reservations secretively and paying for all their meals to ensure they are treated the same as any other customer.

The 2024 Texas restaurant selection will join the MICHELIN Guide selection of hotels later this year and will feature the most unique and exciting places to stay in Texas and around the world. Every hotel in the Guide is chosen for its extraordinary style, service, and personality – with options for all budgets – and each hotel can be booked directly through the MICHELIN Guide website or app.

The MICHELIN Guide is constantly observing the evolution of culinary destinations around the world. Michelin works with Destination Marketing Organizations, or tourism boards, to promote the travel industry in the respective locations; however, the MICHELIN Guide selections process remains completely independent. While selections remain fully independently determined by anonymous Inspectors, the MICHELIN Guide is working with Travel Texas on marketing and promotion activities only.

History and methodology


The upcoming Texas restaurant selection will follow Michelin’s historical methodology, based on five universal criteria, to ensure each destination’s selection equity:

1) quality products

2) the harmony of flavors

3) the mastery of cooking techniques

4) the voice and personality of the chef as reflected in the cuisine

5) consistency between each visit and throughout the menu (each restaurant is inspected several times a year).

The MICHELIN Guide remains a reliable companion for any traveler seeking a great meal. The Guide was first published in France at the turn of the 20th century to encourage tire sales by giving practical advice to French motorists. Michelin’s Inspectors still use the same criteria and manner of selection that were used by Inspectors in the very beginning, now applied in destinations around the world.

Michelin published its first North American Guide in 2005 for New York. Guides have since been added in Washington, D.C.; Chicago; California; Miami/Orlando/Tampa, Florida; Colorado; Atlanta, Toronto; Vancouver; and Mexico.

Naomi Pomeroy, star of "Top Chef Masters" and award-winning chef, dies in river tubing accident in Oregon

Naomi Pomeroy, an award-winning chef who helped put Portland on the map as a culinary destination and starred on "Top Chef Masters," has drowned in an inner tubing accident, authorities said. She was 49 years old.

Pomeroy drowned Saturday evening in the Willamette River near Corvallis after the group she was tubing with got caught on an exposed snag in the water, the Benton County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. Pomeroy was pulled under the water and trapped by a paddle board leash attached to her, Captain Chris Duffitt said. The group had tied their inner tubes and paddle board together.

Authorities said they safely recovered the other two people on the shore and transported them to a boat launch.

Pomeroy's body was recovered Wednesday, the sheriff's office said, after people canoeing on the river spotted her remains and called 911.

"BCSO marine deputies arrived shortly after, located a deceased female on a shallow section of bedrock near the middle of the river with about one to two feet of water," the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office had earlier searched the area using sonar, underwater cameras and drones but was initially unable to find her body.

"I am dedicated to locating Naomi to bring her home to her family and loved ones", Sheriff Jef Van Arsdall said in a statement . "I want to thank all involved in the search and recovery mission and support during this difficult time."

The sheriff's office warned people not to attach themselves to a paddle board unless it has a quick release leash, and advised against tying two or more inner tubes together, as doing so means each person should have a life jacket.

The Oregon State Marine Board noted there has been an "emerging trend" in recent years of people dying due to the leash on their stand up paddle board, or SUP, getting tangled in brush or other debris in rivers.

"Most ankle leashes used by SUP users are not designed for quick release," Brian Paulsen, the agency's boating safety program manager, said in a statement Tuesday. He said quick release leashes, designed for moving water, are worn around the waist.

Pomeroy rose to prominence in the Portland food scene after opening the restaurant Beast in 2007. There, diners could enjoy a six-course prix fixe dinner served at communal tables and built around Pomeroy's penchant for butchering whole animals.

The restaurant paved the way for Pomeroy to win a coveted James Beard award for best chef in the Northwest in 2014, around the same time Portland was soaring in popularity as a travel destination for its food scene, natural beauty and quirky reputation. The restaurant closed during the coronavirus pandemic, but Pomeroy had just recently opened a new frozen custard shop.

Pomeroy was also known for her appearance on cooking shows, including "Top Chef Masters," and owned the Portland cocktail bar Expatriate with her husband. The bar was closed Monday, CBS affiliate KOIN-TV reported, as mourners left flowers and remembrances stacked outside the business.

Heather Wallberg, who owns a restaurant across from Expatriate and has worked in the industry for over a decade, told KOIN-TV that Pomeroy "made the Portland food scene what it is today." She said she reached out to Expatriate to offer any help they need.

Pomeroy's sudden passing "reminds you of the fragility of life," she said.

"She was a rock star chef," Portland food blogger Gary Okazaki told the station. "When they write the history of the Portland culinary scene, she's going to have her own chapter."

U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer from Oregon issued a statement describing Pomeroy's death as a tragic loss.

"Naomi was not just a fabulous chef and entrepreneur, but an amazing human being," Blumenauer said. "Her impact went far beyond Portland, helping establish our leadership and reputation for food excellence. She will be greatly missed."

Surge in coach travel to Birmingham Airport

National Express has announced that is seeing a surge in passengers travelling on coach services to Birmingham Airport this year.

In the six months to the end of June, the Birmingham-based scheduled coach operator has seen a nearly 40 per cent increase in passenger journeys to and from Birmingham Airport, compared to the same period in 2023.

The growth in passengers follows improvements to services for Birmingham Airport earlier this year, including a new daily 466 service connecting Birmingham Airport with Bradford, Leeds, Sheffield, Chesterfield, Derby, Heathrow and London, and a revised daily 100 service between Bristol and Birmingham, reintroducing Gloucester to the Cross Country coach network.

Ahead of the school summer holidays getaway, National Express has launched its new brand campaign 'If you know, you go National Express', aimed at shifting perceptions of coach travel and encouraging people to make the savvy choice of choosing National Express as the smart way to go over other options such as driving and costly rail travel or airport parking.

Catherine Woolfe, customer and marketing director for National Express UK and Ireland, said: “We continue to invest in routes connecting our UK coach network with key airport destinations, and this increase in journeys demonstrates that savvy customers are choosing the most cost effective and sustainable transport option.
