Hill Safari – Ohiya

Hill Safari is the bungalow of Lower Bray Tea Estate, a 50 acre Tea plantation privately owned. It has been designed with 5 guest rooms offering guests a very unique experience in the hill country. Hill Safari has been in the leisure industry for close to 3 decades and has been the pioneer to bring foreign guests to the Ohiya area, whereby providing job opportunities and income sources for the families in Ohiya.

Useful Details

Temperature in the night can vary from 8 to 15 degrees. Come prepared with some warm clothing for the night.

Train Travel

Coming from Colombo : 4th station from NanuOya. Perakumpura, Ambawela, Pattipola, OHIYA. (55 minutes from Nanu Oya)

Coming from Badulla side : 2nd station from Haputale Iddalgasenna, OHIYA (about 40 minutes from Haputale)

Distance from Ohiya station to Hill Safari : 4 kms.

There are a few tuk tuks at the station. If you want me to arrange a tuk tuk then let us know of the time you hope to come to the Ohiya station.

Tuk-Tuk Charges: (subject to variation) Ohiya Railway Station to Hill Safari LKR 1,200 Hill Safari to Horton Plains Car park and after the walk (3 – 4 hrs stay) to drop you back at the Railway station LKR 4,500 or at Hill Safari LKR 5,000

Travelling by Vehicle

Coming by vehicle please come before it is dark as there can be mist towards the late evening and driving can be a little difficult if the driver is not used to the roads. The last 1 km on the Ohiya road (after the Y junction soon after the 24th KM post) is not in a very good condition and the 3/4 km inside the estate – Cars/Van with normal clearance can come down the estate road as we have concreted the bad areas.

If travelling in a vehicle do not come through Nuwara Eliya/ Ambawela/ Pattipola through Horton Plains national park unless you are visiting Horton Plains and then coming to Hill Safari as you will have to pay the applicable gate charges even if you are just using the road. Please note that this gate is closed after 4 pm. and you cannot use the road. Foreigners applicable rate US$……. + taxes

Then the route will be Nuwara Eliya, Keppitipola (on Welimada Road), Boralanda, Ohiya.

From any other direction you have to come to Boralanda and then to Ohiya. Although the Google maps show a route through Kalupahana Bambarakanda road to Ohiya this is not motorable in a normal car – you need a 4 wheel drive or a motor bike.

Directions from Ohiya Railway Station to Hill Safari

From Ohiya Railway Station proceed towards Horton Plains. After 2 km (soon after 24th Km post) you come to a Y junction. At this junction you will see the Uduweria Estate/Hill Safari boards. From this junction take the left road (right road goes to Horton Plains) and when you proceed about another 1 1/4 km you will see the Hill Safari Board.

This is a sharp turn to the right and a reversal of the vehicle is necessary. Proceed on the estate road another 3/4 km to Hill Safari. Inside the estate too there are 2 hair pin bends where the reversal of the vehicle may be necessary

If you like to be outside the crowd just go there few days to enjoy hiking in the Horton plains area. You will be alone and happy in this nature. All staff is very kind. At 30mns car distance from Ohyia. Better to reach it before night as the last miles are not easy.

The location within the tea plantations is perfect with a breathtaking view down to the plains. The staff is friendly and helpful and the food is great. Rooms are spacious and very clean with a wonderful view from the bed. The owners organise a Tuk-Tuk for a whole day for a reasonable price. We started our trip to Horton Plains very early (5:45) and were provided with breakfast boxes. The owner takes ecology protection seriously, no plastic bottles or plastic bags are being provided.

Beautiful location with the most amazing view! The staff were very helpful and we had nice lunch and dinner. Beautiful area to walk! They arranged tuktuk transport for us to Horton plains at 6am in the morning. Definetely recommendable stay!

This hotel is in really a gorgeous location with beautiful views, very authentic and peaceful and it's a place I would recommend staying at least two nights to fully appreciate the surroundings. The owners are very kind and attentive, providing clean drinking water. The hotel provide stunning views where you can enjoy a cup of tea. The food is always tailored to what we feel like eating, featuring breathtaking natural scenery, sunsets, and evening mists. The staff was very accommodating and pleasant. Dinner was excellent, especially thanks to the chef named Nuwan, whose culinary skills truly enhanced our experience. I also recommend visiting the school in the local village and bringing candy and especially pencils for the children. 🙂

Just about everything. Tea on arrival and departure at midday. The room was brilliant with breathtaking views. The owners kind and helpful. Remote and peaceful. We had half board and the evening meal was really good.

The location of Hill Safari is utterly stunning. Remote, nestled away in the hills, surrounded by great walks. Steven and the team make you feel right at home. They are so immensely helpful, working out walking routes, always making sure you’re well fed with the most delicious food and that all your needs are catered for. We absolutely loved our 4 days there and we were sad to leave. Strongly recommend staying here!

Location was amazing - remote with incredible views. Staff were friendly and very attentive. A brilliant place from which to walk in Horton Plains and on the Pekoe Trail.

It was a bit of a mission to get there, but it was so worth it. The most secluded, tranquil and beautiful place we have visited in Sri Lanka so far. Small place and the staff looked after us so well especially Stephen he is so knowledge about the area and nothing is a problem. He drove us to Hortons Plains for sunrise and to Ohiya for our train to Ella. So kind. Hortons Plains is an amazing experience so different to anything else in Sri Lanka, a cloud forest with spectacular views in the morning early. Then lovely afternoon tea on the terrace back at the hotel. If you want peace and quiet and stunning scenery, this is the place for you.

The bungalow which is hidden amidst a tea plantation consists of 5 rooms while the 2 rooms in the new wing offers unparallel views of the Ohiya Gap and beyond while on clear days you are able to spot the Dondra Lighthouse over 100km away in the deep south coastal bed of the island. Trekking expeditions can be arranged as a 7 day programme or cater to your requirements according to where you want to visit.

Opening doors to a trekker's paradise, the Hill Safari Eco Lodge is located in Ohiya which is well known as one of the most scenic hill stations of the island. The property is a bungalow which has been refurbished and extended and it lies in the Lower Bray Estate which is a tea plantation covering a land of 50 acres. The tea plantation is located at an elevation of nearly 7500 feet. Ohiya is a rural village that is located in the Badulla District which is closer to the Horton Plains National Park. The Colombo-Badulla railway runs through this picturesque town and the station is about 4.5 km away from the lodge while driving from Colombo can be a bit long but memorable. Public transport options include a bus route that runs via Boralanda.

A number of 5 guest rooms are available at the Hill Safari Eco Lodge in Ohiya while there are 3 bedrooms in the old wing and 2 in the new wing.
