While most commonly associated with beers, bratwursts and tight leather pants, Germany is a country full of delightful finds that extend far beyond the stereotypes.

From dreamy castles and fairytale towns to awe-inspiring nature and sprawling cities, Deutschland has a little something for every kind of traveler… although I’ll admit the leather pants are also great.

I first visited Germany on a 6 week backpacking trip across Europe, and as I sipped my comically large beer under the toasty Berlin sun, I felt a strange sense of calm and belonging.

Spurred by this hunch, I moved to Munich. One study abroad, and 5 years later, I’m still here, with so much giddy enthusiasm for this country that I’ve become a thoroughly insufferable dinner guest.

But my social life’s loss is your gain, my friend… because today, I’ve decided to channel all my Deutschland fangirl tendencies into this concise Germany travel guide filled with all my top tips, itineraries, and recommendations.

Traveling to Germany Basics

Currency: Euro

Language: German, although accents and dialects vary wildly! In larger cities and tourist hotspots, most Germans also speak excellent English.

Getting Around: Trains, buses and flights are plentiful and affordable in Germany – my best tip is to use Omio to compare options easily. Having a car is ideal for visiting smaller towns, more remote locations and numerous destinations in a short amount of time, but is otherwise not needed for big cities.

• Winter: Christmas markets, skiing & alpine sports, Karneval and Fasching season (Carnival), Starkbier (Strong beer) season
• Spring: Cherry blossoms in Bonn , Frühlingsfest (Springfest) in Munich
• Summer: Hiking, Beer Garden season, summer festivals/celebrations
• Fall: Oktoberfest and other Volksfests, the world’s biggest pumpkin festival in Ludwigsburg, the Wurstmarkt (world’s largest wine festival)

My Favourite Places in Germany

Let’s get my mega-biased opinion out of the way first – Munich is the city I now call home, and I couldn’t recommend it more… especially if you’re obsessed with beer like I am. This is the birthplace of Oktoberfest after all!

There are lots of fun things to do in Munich , like hopping around the city’s sprawling museum district (many only cost 1 euro on Sundays!), eating up the best Bavarian food that Munich has to offer or soaking in the wealth of historical sites scatered around the city.

It’s also an ideal base for many epic day trips. Going from Munich to Neuschwanstein Castle (AKA the real life Sleeping Beauty castle) takes only 2.5 hours. Or, if you want to visit glorious Salzburg from Munich (AKA the birthplace of Mozart and setting of Sound of Music), that’s only 1 hour by train.

Why visit Munich when you travel Germany:

• Amazing beer & beer festivals
• The English Garden – one of the largest city parks in the world
• Beautiful palaces and museums
• Easy base for amazing day trips to the Alps

Berchtesgaden National Park

If it’s natural beauty you’re after, Germany’s Berchtesgaden National Park (near the border to Austria) is a must-visit.

Everything here is breathtaking – from the shimmering turquoise lakes and snow-flecked mountains to the adorable Berchtesgaden town center.

And, if you’re up for it, this is the ideal place to enjoy a typically Bavarian wellness weekend.

Why visit Berchtesgaden National Park when you travel Germany:

• Stunning hikes and scenery
• The glorious boat ride on Königssee to see the equally stunning Obersee
• Historic sights like Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest

Hands down one of my favourite places to visit time and time again is Berlin.

This endlessly fascinating city is home to incredible museums, delicious food, and a unique culture that makes it distinct from the rest of the country, despite its status as capital!

Whether you’re a history nerd, an avid partyer, or a famished foodie, Berlin has plenty to offer.

Why visit Berlin when you travel Germany:

• Fascinating history
• World-class museums and attractions
• A thriving nightlife and food scene

Franconia is a glorious region in northern Bavaria that is divided into Lower, Middle, and Upper Franconia.

To me, it’s one of the most underrated regions in Germany for international visitors, with an abundance of fairytale half-timbered houses, amazing beer, and unique natural landscapes.

Here are some places in Franconia that are absolutely worth visiting:

• Franconian Switzerland
• Würzburg (still haven’t been yet!)

Perhaps the most idyllic entry of this list is Monschau, a sleepy but gorgeous village found near the border to Belgium.

I was lucky enough to come here for Christmas markets a few years ago, and I loved it so much, I skipped the train I’d pre-booked just so I could spend a few more hours there. 

Picturesque half-timbered houses clustered around a roaring central river… oh, and a castle on a hill. Because of course they have one.

Why visit Monschau when you travel Germany:

• Super friendly locals
• Picture-perfect scenes at every turn
• Christina might cry if you don’t

Hamburg is an amazing city I’ve had the chance to visit a few times now. It’s a lifestyle city that reminds me a lot of my hometown, Vancouver.

Home to a mix of classic and modern architecture (including the coolest opera house in the world!), as well as Germany’s #1 attraction – the adorable Miniatur Wonderland, Hamburg has a lot to offer tourists, but perhaps the best way to enjoy it is with a nice beer and sunset along the Elbe.

Why visit Hamburg when you travel Germany :

• Amazing architecture like the Elbphilharmonie
• Fresh and tasty seafood (and a booming foodie scene!)
• A fun, vibrant vibe

Dresden is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany, and its beauty is all the more astounding when we consider that much of the city was destroyed completely in WWII.

After decades of reconstruction however, Dresden once again shines with its former glory, establishing itself as one of the most important cultural hotspots in Germany.

… and all only a stone’s throw from Saxon Switzerland, one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the country!

Why visit Dresden when you travel Germany :

• Stunning architecture and sights
• World-class museums and culture scene
• Its jawdropping Christmas market (the oldest one in the country!)

Stuttgart (and its Surrounding Area)

Stuttgart is the biggest city (and capital) of the German state Baden-Württemburg. 

It’s perhaps best known as the ‘cradle of the automobile industry’, which explains why it’s home to not just one, but two car-centric museums: one belonging to Mercedes-Benz, and one to Porsche.

Besides cars though, the area around Stuttgart offers up some of the cutest small towns you can find in Germany, all easily reachable by public transport, meaning you get the best of all worlds during a visit here.

Why visit Stuttgart and the surrounding area when you travel Germany:

• Fairytale towns like Esslingen, Ludwigsburg, and Tübingen
• Stuttgart’s Stadtbibliothek, one of the most unique and beautiful libraries in the world
• Lots of fun events like Stuttgart’s Christmas Market and the Cannstatter Volksfest 

Thuringia is a state often overlooked by international tourists, but if you’re looking for a truly charming German escape, its capital Erfurt makes an excellent choice.

This beautiful city is famed for its unique Krämerbrücke, which is a gorgeous medieval bridge lined with residential buildings.

But that’s not all – there’s also an impressive cathedral, an imposing fortress, and surprises waiting on every corner… quite literally, because Erfurt is the HQ of the German children’s channel KiKA, and there’s plenty of fun statues of famous characters scattered around town.

Why visit Erfurt when you travel Germany:

• Krämerbrücke, the longest inhabited bridge in Europe
• Quirky and fun children’s channel sculptures all over the city

Cologne, to me, is a city synonymous with fun and celebration. While at first glance, it might not rank among the “prettiest” places to visit in Germany (much of it was destroyed in the war), it still boasts several impressive landmarks and sights, like the epic Cologne Cathedral.

Where Cologne really shines though is during special events – the Christmas markets here are some of the best I’ve been to in my entire life, and the Karneval celebrations… well, those are truly epic!

Why visit Cologne when you travel Germany:

• Bucket list events like the Cologne Christmas Market and Kölner Karneval
• The iconic Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral), one of the most famous churches in the world 
• Fun-loving locals who are among the friendliest I’ve ever encountered in Germany

Last but not least, we have Hannover, a city which (in my opinion) is one of the most underrated cities in Germany where tourism is concerned.

Locally, people often joke that Hannover is one of the most boring cities in Germany, but I don’t think that’s true at all. One quick look and you’ll find a stunning palace within the city, an architecturally impressive Town Hall (with a unique elevator offering epic views), and a cool laidback vibe that many compare to what Berlin was like decades ago.

Bucket List Experiences in Germany

Germany is full of incredible bucket list experiences. Here are a few of my favourites:

Christmas Markets

German Christmas markets are the stuff of bucket list dreams.

If you adore Christmas, a German Xmas market trip needs to make it on your bucket list, because nobody captures Christmas coziness and joy quite like the Germans do.

The best part (besides the droolworthy assortment of German Christmas Market foods ) is that you’ll find Christmas markets in just about every city, town, and even the smallest of villages, each with their own unique take on traditions.

Trust me, you could never get bored of visiting these.

Oktoberfest

Trust me – Oktoberfest , AKA the world’s largest beer festival, is reason enough to make a trip to Germany.

Typically celebrated annually in Munich, this is one of the most incredible events in the world, with millions of people attending, millions of beer served, and a guaranteed recipe for making memories to last a lifetime.

… If you can remember anything after 5L of beer that is.

Visiting Fairytale Castles

If you love castles, I recommend avoiding Germany……. because you might just combust from sheer fangirl joy.

Seriously, Germany is every castle lover’s kryptonite, with elegant palaces and fairytale castles in the thousands. If you’re a Disney gal like me who grew up dreaming of happily ever afters, pack a ballgown and head to Germany ASAP.

I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Here are some castles that you must visit in Germany:

The Cherry Blossoms in Bonn

The cherry blossoms in Bonn (also the birthplace of Beethoven and gummy bear legend, Haribo) are absolutely spectacular, and 100% worth visiting in Spring time. In fact, I’d even say they’re one of the best things to see in Europe at Spring time.

Yes, you, too, can come frolic in these tunnels of pink! Here is my guide on where to find cherry blossoms in Bonn.

Karneval, Fasching, Etc.

Carnival Season is one of the best times to visit Germany if you’re looking for a party.

The grandest celebrations take place just before Lent, and are celebrated throughout the country, although the festivites in North-Rhine Westphalia are probably the best known.

My top recommendation? Go celebrate in Cologne, where the Kölner Karneval draws millions of visitors every year.

My Top Germany Travel Tips

• If you’re overwhelmed by transport options, Omio is a great resource for comparing trains, buses and flights in Germany at the same time.
• If travelling by train, look into group discount tickets like the Bayern Ticket which give you unlimited train travel for one day on regional trains. It can save you a TON of money.
• If you are traveling to multiple countries nearby (i.e. Switzerland), a Eurail pass might save you money.

Accommodation:

• Booking.com is a great place to search up hotels, and filtering by Free Cancellation allows you to book without paying upfront
• Airbnb can be a very affordable alternative for longer stays/bigger groups

Attractions and Tickets:

• GetYourGuide is a great site for finding tours and attraction tickets
• City passes like the Munich City Pass , Berlin Pass , and the Cologne Card can save you a LOT of money if you plan to visit many tourist attractions in a short time
• If you’re trying to find specific info about a place, try using Google Translate to search in German because German versions of sites always have more info

Best way to get around: There’s nothing more reliable than the German train system, or the Deutsche Bahn. Some of their trains travel at a regular pace and others are high-speed, getting you to your destination even faster. Either way, the Deutsche Bahn darts commuters and tourists alike to over 300 stations daily, both within Germany and to other countries like France and the Netherlands. So, whether you’re exploring a city or heading to a different part of Germany entirely, you won’t be disappointed (or late).

Phrases to know:

• “Danke” means “thank you.” “Bitte” means “please.”
• “Wo ist die toilette?” means “Where is the bathroom?”
• “Sprechen sie Englisch?” means “Do you speak English?”

Fun fact: A very common response when being asked if someone would like to do one thing or another is “Ist mir wurst,” which translates to “This is sausage to me.” It’s a colloquial way of saying that you don’t have a preference.

5 Genuine German Vloggers Who Hold Your Ticket to Fluency

If you love YouTube , chances are you’ve watched vlogs and gotten acquainted with their creators, who are known as vloggers .

What exactly is a vlog anyway, and how can it be valuable for German learners?

I’m sure that you guys all know what a podcast is, and you already  watch all the best German TV shows and classic movies —or you may even check out some YouTube channels  from time to time to get a few laughs and get exposed to native pronunciation .

While these are all fantastic resources for learning German, maybe it’s time to add vloggers to the list of people helping you with your language learning to bring it to the next level.

“Was ist das denn?”,  I hear you ask.

A vlog is a video blog, and a vlogger is somebody who produces vlogs. While vlogs aren’t quite as famous as their audio-only equivalent, the podcast, they’re growing in popularity every year. There are thousands of vloggers on YouTube, covering every subject imaginable. Due to the format of the media and its cheap, accessible and often viral nature, vlogs are predominantly created at home, independently, by young people who want to express themselves in fun and inventive ways. They’re fast, funny and always entertaining.

Vlogs are a fantastic medium to incorporate into your regular studies, as they’re great for listening comprehension and catching slang words and phrases, along with testing out those grammar rules you’ve learned from books and blogs. Most vlogs are short, clocking between 2 to 10 minutes in length, so it’s easy to go back over what you’ve just heard without becoming fatigued.

Vlogs are a great language learning tool as they’re both visual and oral. The vloggers are talking about lots of different things, but usually narrating or commenting on what’s happening on-screen. This makes it super easy to follow along.

Another bonus is that they’re also regularly updated —once you find your favorite vlogger, you can become familiar with them and their idiosyncrasies and slang and catch up with new developments and videos. Weekly vlogs are the most common, although there are daily and monthly ones as well.

This list presents the five best German vloggers that you can get started with. The content they produce is ideal for language learners, and it’s all so fun and interesting that you may well get addicted to following vlogs in general.

5 Great German Vloggers Who You’ve Gotta Meet

Erik range aka gronkh.

The most famous German vlogger around, Erik Range is a video game developer with a sense of humor.

He leads his 3 million subscribers through dozens of video games from “Minecraft” to “Fallout 4” and everything in between. Admittedly, looking at somebody play computer games all day might not sound like the most interesting thing on the Internet. However, it’s not the gameplay, but rather the comments and jokes which he peppers throughout the videos that draw the viewers in and keep them hooked.

There’s a lot of slang  and narrative dialogue, making it a fun and easy way to immerse yourself in everyday words and phrases. It’s easy to empathize with the frustrations, triumphs and sometimes absurdities of gaming that Gronkh experiences as he makes his way through various challenges and levels.

The channel is in German, without subtitles, but the narrative style of the videos makes it very easy to follow, especially if you’re already a gamer. The same words pop up all the time, and because the narration follows what happens on-screen, these words and phrases sink in quickly. The Horror Game Playlist provides the most laughs (and frights). Be sure to watch the “Slender” gameplay video for equal amounts of fear, tension and laughter.

Mira from Yummypilgrim

Mira is a German girl from Frankfurt am Main who loves all things food, travel and style.

Her channel has loads of easy-to-follow recipes and restaurant reviews, which are great resources for improving German food vocabulary. One of the most interesting playlists is the “Food Haul,” where Mira buys a big stash of food from different places around the world, New York for instance, and explains what the items are while tasting and testing. This is a nice way to learn vocab but also to see what German people think about your own country’s cuisine!

There’s a huge amount of recipes on the vlog, all prepared with an emphasis on ease and speed. Mira loves to cook vegan and vegetarian food as well, so there are lots of great recipes for anybody to try. There are links to the recipes with loads of comments from the community too. Most recipes are cheap and healthy (not all though—check out the Churros .) With regular updates and different types of food, there’s lots to find on Mira’s channel.

If you really love Mira, she has another channel called FunnyPilgrim , focusing more broadly on style and comedy. Another extra resource to check out!

Julien and Lee from  FlyingPandas

Julien and Lee, two Germans of Asian descent, have created a vlog full of pranks, parodies and stunts, mostly shot through the lens of a slow motion camera. The pair are producers for many other vloggers in Germany, so expect lots of collaborations and cameos from the other people listed in this article.

With great production and lots of action, this is a super entertaining way to learn some vocab. From music videos to sketches and pranks, there are tons of videos that are easy to understand and entertaining to watch. While there are no subtitles, often key words appear in the videos, making them even easier to follow.

Both Julien and Lee now have their own YouTube channels, where you can see lots of behind the scenes videos, travel and even more slow motion footage.

Phil, TC and OG from YTTITY

Starting out as an amateur version of “Jackass,” these three young Germans (Phil, TC and OG) have become some of the most famous vloggers in Germany, rising from a trio of young skaters to YouTube superstars.

The content is eclectic, but with a strong, underlying sense of humor running through every video. Expect skits, songs, video games and lots and lots of German-language parodies.

Song parodies are their specialty and their funniest output. The group take famous English-language songs, change the lyrics into German and sing about the things that happen in their daily lives. David Guetta, Taylor Swift and Gotye get the parody treatment. Vlogging is an excellent platform for young people to express themselves, therefore there will always be lots of vlogs dealing with gaming and Internet culture.

This is definitely one for all the video game lovers out there. The format is quite different to Gronkh, the other gaming vlog on the list. Rather than playing games with and narrating the action, DoktorFroid picks apart Internet and gaming culture. Expect a lot of funny top 10 lists and random game facts, delivered in a fast and eclectic style. This blog is heavy on the Internet slang  and is infused with German humor (it exists, really!).

Top 10 games lists, skits and parodies feature heavily, with random games facts providing loads of quirky facts about your favorite games. There’s also the playlist called Between the Pixels, which investigates the influence of games on modern culture and has lots of  descriptive language, providing you with some great educational content outside of formal language learning.

And That’s Not All

As you can see, watching vlogs is a simple, easily accessible and entertaining way to learn German. It isn’t, however, the only way to learn the language. It must be used in conjunction with other methods, such as actively reading, speaking and writing.

One of the great things about vlogs is that they provide an opening to German youth culture and language that isn’t always so readily available in other contexts. You’re watching real Germans creating real content for a German audience, and so these vlogs are truly invaluable tools for learning. There are so many channels dealing with so many subjects that you’re sure to find one that you like.

Incorporating vlogs into your studies will be another large step towards becoming fluent in German .

47 Survival German Travel Phrases [You Need To Know]

Are you dreaming about your next trip to Germany? Maybe this is your first visit and you’re keen to blend in. Or perhaps you’ve visited German speaking countries a few times but always resorted to using English.

In this post you will discover 47 tried and tested German travel phrases that have worked well for me on my many trips to Germany. You’ll also hear audio of each of the phrases.

Why Learn German Travel Phrases?

Before we get started I want to give you a quick pep talk.

If you’re travelling to a German speaking country any time soon, you may head there with the idea that ‘everyone speaks English’.

If you’re heading for a city break, you’ll probably meet people in the tourist industry that do speak a bit of English. But once you step off the tourist path, you’ll realise that many people don’t speak much English at all.

Even if you’re opting for a city break, it shows a great deal of respect to the local people to at least learn how to say ‘hello’, ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ in German. If you expand your knowledge and learn how to say more German tourist phrases such as ‘I would like’ or ‘can I check in?’ the person you’re speaking to will be really impressed.

In my many trips to Germany, I’ve learned to never be afraid of speaking German with the locals. Even during my earlier visits when I tried and butchered that poor language, the German speakers I spoke to were so happy that I was even trying.

Don’t let the fear of making mistakes stop you from trying. Even if you mostly speak English, then throw in one of these German travel phrases somewhere, you’ll make progress.

Common German Words

Let’s make a start with the most common German travel phrases and words you’ll encounter as a tourist. These are simple pleasantries that will be appreciated by the locals. So make sure you learn some of these even if you don’t learn anything else.

Asking For Help / Not Understanding

Whenever you’re in a country where you don’t speak a lot of the language, it’s always helpful to learn a few ’emergency phrases’.

For example, one time when I was in Germany, but didn’t know much German at that point, another guest in a hotel started chatting to me in German. My go-to phrase to politely end a conversation was sorry, mein Deutsch ist nicht so gut (sorry, my German isn’t very good).

And just so you know, in a real emergency, the emergency number in Germany is 112.

Whether you’re stopping for a quick coffee or a full on meal, there are loads of chances to practice some German travel phrases with the waiting staff when you order food and drink in German . At the very least, memorise ich hätte gern … (I would like…) and then add your drink or meal of choice. It’s really polite and shows a lot of respect to the person serving you to order in this way.

Some key words to listen out for are trinken (drink) and essen (eat). These are great words to train yourself to listen for so you can get a feel for what is being asked.

In a hotel you’re most likely to meet English speakers, but if you want to practice some German, the receptionists are usually very happy to speak to you. Why not try some of these essential phrases out?

Getting Around & Directions

Thanks to Google Maps, you probably won’t need to ask a local for directions, but it’s always helpful to know how to ask the way to the toilet / bathroom if you’re in a café.

One thing to keep in mind when shopping in Germany, is that you’ll encounter shops, cafés and restaurants that only accept cash. So it’s a good idea to check before you order.

German has 3+ words for receipt, and in my experience they seem to be interchangeable. One way of saying receipt isn’t limited to the area you’re in, so you might hear Quittung, Bon and Beleg being used all in the same city. Keep your ears alert for these tricky words!

Youtube is a fantastic resource for studying German. Similar to podcasts , they’re a great way to add some extra listening practice to your study routine. While they may lack the built-in structure of some online German courses or even apps , they’re nevertheless super useful.

Incorporating Youtube videos into your routine can make studying German a lot more fun. Not only that, since they’re created by native German speakers, you’ll get a more in-depth look at what the life of a German “Youtuber” or “Vlogger” is all about.

In the process, you’ll improve your German and understanding of German culture.

Here are 25 of the top German YouTube channels for you to add to your playlist. We’ve sorted them into beginner, intermediate, and advanced categories so you can find the ones that are the right fit for your current level.

For Beginners

If you’re just starting out learning German, then try one of these YouTube channels first. They’re often created to be similar to language lessons.

GermanPod101

As you look for resources to study German, you’re bound to encounter GermanPod101 . This is a subscription-based site that includes 1,000s of audio and video lessons, transcripts, flashcards, and more. However, I found their paid service to be pretty disappointing . But, you don’t have to be a member to benefit from GermanPod101 ’s free YouTube channel.

There are several playlists to choose from, including the Introduction to German playlist that covers German grammar, pronunciation, and writing. There are also videos such as “Top 10 Phrases your Parents Always Say” or “Top 10 Phrases You’ll Need For A Date”. The videos are well-produced and very modern, and include helpful on-screen text so you can follow along. There’s also a 24/7 live YouTube channel with a variety of hosts who will introduce you to new vocabulary and useful phrases.

Learn German with Herr Antrim

Herr Antrim is a high school German teacher who has been teaching for over a decade. He takes a fun and slightly nerdy approach to language-learning, with English-based instructions that make it easy to follow along. His videos are categorized according to difficulty level, so you can start with Level A1 to practice your pronunciation then move on to Level A2 for scripted dialogues. Advanced learners can take part in live online Master Classes that cover topics such as the genitive case.

Most of the content is available for free, but you can purchase more lessons from Herr Antrim’s site or subscribe on Patreon for worksheets and transcripts. You can also join the YouTube video channel for $4.99 per month.

smarterGerman

smarterGerman  is a fantastic website that created my favorite online German course . Michael is an excellent teacher who really gets you to think about how German works and uses stories as a method for instruction.

Although you have to purchase most of their lessons, you can access quite a bit of content for free on YouTube, including fun songs to help you learn articles, cases, suffixes, and more. Michael also gives lots of advice about how to tackle learning German. Definitely worth checking out!

Easy Online German

Easy Online German is a great resource for students looking for a formal lesson style with a native speaker. The host places a particular emphasis on pronunciation, and her lessons are intended for beginners rather than intermediate learners. She records the episodes from home and occasionally throws in some cartoons and other fun videos, like a song to help you memorize German numbers.

This is a bare-bones YouTube channel that can help improve your listening skills. The host never appears on camera, but reads vocabulary lists, poems, and other content in German, with transcripts and English translations on screen. There aren’t any “lessons” here, but there are hundreds of videos to help boost your German vocabulary.

Deutsch für Euch

Deutsch für Euch , or “German for You,” is one of the most popular YouTube channels for learning German. The host describes herself as a “goofy girl” who brings a fun attitude to her lessons. Since the lessons are offered in English, they’re suitable for new learners, and the videos are categorized by level so you can work through all of the A1 videos in order if you’re just starting out. She also offers “storytime” episodes so that intermediate learners can practice their listening comprehension skills.

Deutsch Happen

Deutsch Happen is a YouTube channel hosted by Kirsten Winkler. Her lessons alternate between Powerpoint presentation as well as cursive written in real-time, so they’re great for visual learners who want to see the host write the words as she speaks them. While the channel hasn’t been updated in a while, there are dozens of videos available for all learning levels and on a variety of topics.

Learn German

Learn German is a great resource for studying grammar and vocabulary. The lessons are free and cover everything from A1 – C2. Since there’s no on-camera host, you may not find them as engaging as some of the other channels, but they’re perfect for students looking for “slideshow” lessons that include both words and images.

Girls4Teaching

Girls 4 Teaching is a YouTube channel hosted by Eva that includes lessons on grammar, pronunciation, and culture. It’s suitable for beginners, but some of the advanced lessons are German-only, such as an episode on the history and culture of Berlin. There are lots of colorful graphics and images to keep you engaged.

Free German Lessons

This free series offers several playlists suitable for students from level A1 – C2. Although there isn’t as much variety to the lessons compared to some of the other channels on this list, it’s a good resource to refresh your memory of specific parts of speech, with creative drawings and graphics used to supplement the material.

Learn German Through Music

This YouTube channel offers very basic material that’s suitable for children or beginners. You’ll find some catchy songs to help you remember German numbers, the alphabet, the months of the year, days of the week, and some verb conjugations.

BookBox German

This is another channel that’s intended for kids but can be helpful for learners of all ages. The videos are essentially animated storybooks, so although the stories are simple, they have fun animations, colorful characters, and easy-to-follow plots.

Intermediate

These channels are suitable for intermediate learners who already have some level of listening comprehension. Instead of grammar lessons, these YouTube channels often feature real conversations with native German speakers. Use these videos to practice your pronunciation and pick up dialects and slang from all over Germany.

Easy German

This channel is known for its casual “man-on-the-street” interviews. In each video, the hosts have conversations with people about fun or unusual topics such as “How to Survive a Winter in Berlin” or “What Germans Think of Rammstein.” This is a great video series for learning a new dialect or German slang. Each video offers subtitles in English and German, making them easier to follow along with.

Get Germanized

Get Germanized is an offbeat YouTube channel hosted by a native German speaker who started it as a way to improve his English. So while this channel does have some intro level material for new learners, it’s best for intermediate students who want to deepen their understanding of German culture. Video topics include German slang, funny German commercials from the 1990s, cultural differences, and more.

Learn German with Anja

This series hosted by a native German speaker includes free introductory courses as well as intermediate vlogs featuring “real life” German. Anja offers transcripts and other advanced content to subscribers on her website or her Patreon page. This channel is a good series to watch if you’re tired of German “teachers” and just want a German friend who will take you along on her adventures while teaching you a new language.

Learn German with Jenny

Learn German with Jenny covers a variety of topics suitable for students from A1 – C2 levels. Many of the videos are free, but you have to subscribe to her website for access to flashcards, worksheets, and other materials. There’s also an app so you can take the lessons with you on the go. There are several different hosts and even a vlog series in which Jenny travels to France, Austria, and other locations in Europe.

Deutsch mit Marija

This channel is hosted by Marija, who comes from Latvia but now lives in Germany. She speaks several different languages, so this channel is perfect for someone who wants to learn German from a true polyglot. Her lessons are delivered in English and are best for intermediate to advanced students. You can sign up for more courses on her website.

Don’t Trust the Rabbit

Don’t Trust the Rabbit is hosted by Trixie and is ideal for students who want to learn about German accents. Although there are no formal lessons, Trixie breaks down the differences between dialects in different regions, such as Standard German vs. the Saxon dialect. She also explains why the German accent sounds the way it does.

Learn German Fast

This YouTube channel is hosted by Bilal Usman and has videos on dozens of different conversation topics. There’s no on-screen host, so the presentation can be a bit dry, but it’s helpful for practicing a specific scenario you might encounter in Germany, such as opening a bank account or sending mail.

These YouTube channels are intended either for native speakers or for more advanced students. As you progress, these videos will help expand your vocabulary and train you to recognize German words and accents at a natural pace.

Learn German with the DW

The DW, or Deutsche Welle, is a public broadcasting company that is known for making high-quality language learning material. The YouTube channel offers a range of content, including introductory A1 lessons and more advanced episodes. The “German at Work” series features German dialogues in the maintenance and restaurant industries, while the telenovela “Jojo Sucht Das Gluck” follows a Brazilian traveling to Germany. You’ll find the same production quality you would expect from a TV or news channel.

The Goethe-Institut

The Goethe-Institut is a cultural organization in Germany that produces a range of useful material for language students. Just like the DW, this YouTube channel has intermediate and advanced content made with high production values. For example, the “ Typisch?! ” web series follows a job-seeker from Spain interviewing at a German company. It’s a great resource for anyone planning to visit Germany for work or business.

DeutschMitJulia

Deutsch Mit Julia is a channel hosted by a native German speaker living in Ireland. The videos are intended for intermediate to advanced learners and typically include a short dialogue between multiple characters, with transcripts and vocabulary available on the website. There’s also a section on “Business German,” which is ideal for students who plan to live and work in Germany and want to learn the relevant business lingo.

Authentic German Learning

Authentic German Learning is a great video series for advanced learners who want to improve their listening skills. There are no English translations, so you’ll want to have a good grasp of grammar and vocabulary before going into it. Although there’s a website that includes additional learning materials, there are over 200 free YouTube videos in which host Mark “vlogs” about his experiences and personal development. This is a great way to get to know a speaker well through many hours of content.

Finally, to get familiar with German as intended for native speakers, queue up a playlist of TEDx talks from Germany, Austria, or other German-speaking cities. Although most of the TED Talks on YouTube are in English, many of them are in other languages. This is a great way to practice being in the audience at German-language events. See how much you can follow without looking at the description of the event beforehand.

YouTube channels are an increasingly popular way to learn a language. In fact, some of the best language-learning content you can find is available on YouTube for free! Don’t get overwhelmed and try them all at once. Find a Vlogger whose style and pace works for you and dive into some video lessons to speed up your language-learning process.

German Language for Travellers: Learn German Travel Phrases

If you are planning a short holiday stay or a business trip to Germany you do not need to learn any German as most people you are going to meet will speak some English anyway. But, it will not hurt if you learn some basic German phrases, such as greetings, just to sound nice. However, if you are traveling to Germany or any other German-speaking country more often, learning a few essential German travel phrases and expressions may help you get along in situations when there are no English speakers around. Below you will find an overview of free Internet resources that largely focus on German for travellers.

German for Tourists on YouTube

• German Phrases for Travelers is a 20 min video that will teach you the very basics of the German language that any foreigner travelling around Germany will find useful.
• Basic German Travel Phrases from expertvillage is a collection of fourteen youtube videos that will not only teach you essential German travel phrases like those used when greeting people, asking for directions, travelling through airports, seeking accommodation, ordering in a restaurant, renting a car or expressions used in emergency situations, but will also give you a couple of useful travel tips on must-see German locations for foreign visitors.

Interactive Online Courses for Travellers to Germany

• LingoHut offers a free German course suitable for tourists as most of their 109 lessons focus on travel topics such as understanding directions, airport and hotel conversations, moving around town, sightseeing, shopping, ordering food at a restaurant, etc. You will learn basic vocabulary and phrases related to each topic. Each lesson includes vocabulary training, flashcards, and matching, tic-tac-toe and concentration games as well as a listening game.
• Goethe Verlag has prepared a German course for beginners as part of their series called 50 languages. This course contains many lessons that frequent travellers to German-speaking countries may find useful. In the first 80 or so lessons you will learn basic German phrases related to the most common conversational topics whereas the remaining lessons provide examples of sentences illustrating the use of German grammar (this part may be difficult to understand without further explanation, though). You can access this course online for free, download all of its 100 lessons as mp3 files or try it on your mobile device. However, only the first 30 lessons are free in the mobile application. Complete course for portable devices will cost you $2.99.

German for Travellers on Mobile Apps

• Bravolol is a mobile application for foreign visitors to Germany who wish to learn some basic German phrases and vocabulary most frequently used when traveling around. You will be listening to the speaking parrot and repeating the phrases and expressions you heard. Whenever needed you can search for phrases by keywords. This app can also be used offline. The basic version is free but the full version will cost you $4.99.

German Travel Phrases on PDFs

• German for Confident Travel is a free downloadable German travel phrasebook in the PDF format. It contains hundreds of German phrases with English translations and explanations on when to use each phrase. This phrasebook also provides pronunciation guidance for English speakers. The main focus is on travel-related topics such as greetings, food, accommodation, shopping, transportation and socializing.

Social Platforms for Travellers

• PolyglotClub is a social platform where people can find conversation partners in foreign countries who are native speakers in the language they are trying to learn. However, this platform is also used by travellers who wish to connect with natives in the country they are planning to visit. They can ask them all sorts of questions about their country, language and culture to become more familiar with the place before they leave on a trip. Likewise, travellers can ask their language exchange partners before they go on a trip to teach them correct vocabulary to be able to take a taxi, check at a hotel, ask for directions or order meals and drinks at a restaurant.
• Interpals brings together people from all over the world who are learning foreign languages and/or are looking for travel buddies abroad that will show them around when visiting their town. Although this platform is not specifically designed for teaching travel phrases, it is very likely that these will be some of the first expressions you will learn before and during your visit to another country.

‘Ja’ (yaa) and ‘Nein’ (nain).

The first words you may want to learn before your trip to Germany should include: ‘Ja’ (yes) and ‘Nein’ (no), greetings such as ‘Hallo’ (hello), ‘Guten Tag’ (good day), ‘Auf Wiedersehen’ (good bye) and a couple of words to sound polite such as ‘Bitte’ (please), ‘Danke’ (thank you), ‘Entschuldigung’ (sorry, though many Germans also say sorry) and ‘Gesundheit’ (bless you).

‘Bitte’ is one of the most frequent words you will hear when visiting Germany and usually means ‘please’ or ‘yes, please’. As an interjection it can also translate as ‘you are welcome’, ‘here you go’ or ‘go ahead’. ‘Die Bitte’ is also a noun meaning a ‘plea’, ‘request’ or an ‘appeal’.

‘Bitte schön’ are actually two words used most often as a polite response to someone saying ‘Danke schön’ or ‘Danke sehr’ (i.e., different ways of saying thank you such as ‘many thanks’ or ‘thanks a lot’) and it means ‘you are welcome’, ‘my pleasure’ or ‘not at all’.

The most common casual German greetings are ‘Grüß dich!’ and ‘Hallo!’.

The German word for tip is ‘Trinkgeld’ which literally means ‘drink money’, suggesting that you usually tip the waiter. It is a kind of gratuity, not a service charge. Hence, if you were happy with the service, you round up the bill by adding up to 10% extra. But, if you were not satisfied, there is absolutely no reason to leave a tip.

You may hear people say ‘gerne’ quite often while travelling in Germany, especially as a response to saying ‘thank you’ to them. It is a polite expression that translates as ‘gladly’ or ‘with pleasure’, meaning that the person enjoyed helping you.

Genau literally means “exact(ly)”, “accurate(ly)” or “precise(ly)”. However, its other meanings are “that’s right”, “yes, that’s it”, “yes, that’s correct” or simply “right” or “yes”. This broader meaning is the main reason why German speakers use the word “genau” so much.

Louis Cole initially started out enthralling (and grossing out) viewers with his adventurous ability to eat every odd delicacy that was dead or alive.

Today, this U.K. travel vlogger has taken to daily vlogs of his life, inspiring viewers to live the adventure while travelling the world.

A well-loved travel vlog hero of YouTube, not only does he make binge-watching addictive, but he incorporates 360-degree video and has his fans introduce his videos.

2. Mr Ben Brown

Mr. Ben Brown is mostly known as a YouTube vlogger. But he travels a bit and his Visual Vibes series showcases some seriously stunning travel cinematography, which will leave you breathless.

His videos are highly informative insights, which crack the travel code of each country.

7. Hopscotch the Globe

Kristin Sarah merges her acting chops with her love for travel in Hopscotch the Globe .

She’s like that fun travel bestie who’s not afraid to be a little silly. Her channel incorporates vlogging with cultural parodies and travel inspired DIY recipes.

Today, she shares her channel spotlight with her husband Siya; together, these travel partners in crime hop around the globe, creating weekly entertainment.

Their videos are well-shot and occasionally, filmed like a sexy commercial (okay, not your every day RV travel video).

You may know Samuel and Audrey as their travel blogging aliases, Nomadic Samuel and That Backpacker .

For audiences, who want to get their binge watching on without taking a break, they are also known to occasionally have long format videos.

Sacha and Jymael are British photographers turn expat vloggers, documenting their life in Thailand.

Recently they announced their new adventure~ a move to Portugal and a baby!

15. The Food Ranger

If you love Asian food, Trevor is The Food Ranger of Asia. An expat in Sichuan, China, he chomps and slurps some of the best Chinese cuisine (and uh, some pretty obscure foods too).

Commendable is his ability to upload regular videos while staying under China’s banned radar (YouTube and Google are banned in China).

He’s quickly growing a following as a new foodie channel to watch.

Like all lists, people will wonder why they’re not on it. I’m positive I missed some good ones, but this is very loose criteria I’d be using if I were hired to cast, produce or pitch a TV show. Creators did not need to meet all criteria, but most. – Programming: Weekly dedication, quality, storytelling & individual style execution – Audience: Niche, loyalty, & YouTube friendly – Blog worthy and/or binge worthy – Does it bring a new spin to the term “travel video” or “travel show” – Channel Personality/Talent: brand recognition, hosting & entertainment value

Germany’s prosecutors are accusing the German-Russian nationals of being prepared to ‘carry out explosive and arson attacks’ on the country’s US military sites.

Germany has arrested two German-Russian dual nationals on suspicions that they were plotting sabotage attacks on US military sites in the country to undermine Western military support for Ukraine.

German prosecutors said on Thursday that the two men, identified as Dieter S and Alexander J, were arrested a day earlier in the town of Bayreuth in the southeastern state of Bavaria after their homes and workplaces were searched on suspicion of “having worked for a foreign intelligence service”.

They said in a statement that Dieter was in contact with an interlocutor linked with the Russian secret service, and exchanged information that was gathered.

Alexander began assisting him from March 2024, the prosecutors added.

Dieter’s secret communication started in October last year, and he was prepared to “carry out explosive and arson attacks” on military infrastructure and industrial sites in Germany, including facilities of the US military.

Dieter and Alexander allegedly scouted a number of targets, taking photos and videos of military transports and goods, among other things, which were passed on to the Russian contact.

According to Der Spiegel, a German magazine, the facilities included the Grafenwoehr army base in Bavaria where Ukrainian soldiers receive training to use US Abrams tanks.

German authorities said Dieter was active in eastern Ukraine between December 2014 and September 2016 as a fighter in an armed unit of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), a Moscow-backed breakaway region of Ukraine that was annexed by Russia in 2022, and possessed a firearm in this context.

Dieter faces an additional charge of belonging to “a foreign terrorist organisation” for his activities in Ukraine.

The arrests come amid intense fighting more than two years into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with Germany one of the biggest suppliers of military aid to Ukraine.

“Our security authorities have prevented possible explosive attacks that were intended to target and undermine our military assistance to Ukraine,” German interior minister Nancy Faeser said.

“It is a particularly serious case of alleged spy activity for [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s criminal regime.”

The announcement of the arrests on Thursday coincided with a surprise trip to Ukraine by German economy minister Robert Habeck to offer more support.

Habeck is also expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has repeatedly bemoaned a lack of strong air defences as Russian attacks increasingly target energy infrastructure.
