kite trip europe

Europe guide Are you one of those European kiters looking for your next kitesurfing holidays near home? Let us tell you that in Europe, there are many kite spots to enjoy kitesurfing to the fullest, especially on the Mediterranean sea. That is why we have created a list with the top kitesurfing spots in Europe!   The ultimate guide with the top kite spots in Europe

Well, there are a lot of kite locations in Europe, and all of them are perfect destinations for a kitesurfing holiday, especially if you don´t want to travel very far to kite. The best kite spots in Europe are located around the mediterranean sea and in the Canary Islands, with hot weather and super good wind. However, you can also find some terrific kite spots North in Europe, like in Denmark.

Without further ado, let´s see what the number one kiteboarding spots in Europe are!

kite trip europe

List of the best places to kite in Europe

In this list, you will find terrific locations to kite in Europe! We hope you like 🙂

1. Sicily (Italy)

Sicily is located in the south of Italy, and it is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, a perfect place for a kitesurfing trip. This island is considered one of the most valued tourist destinations in Europe. The best location to kite in Sicily is on the west coast of the island between Trapani and Marsala, which has recently become one of the most sought after places thanks to the wind and the sailing conditions that occur.

The spot is known as Lo Stagnone, a massive lagoon with more than 300 days a year with good wind. Besides, the proximity to Africa makes it a place with relatively warm temperatures that encourage everybody to enjoy this amazing sport throughout the year. The wind direction is usually side / onshore, and as we have indicated before, there is good wind most of the year, which makes it the right destination any time of year. The closest and cheapest airport is Palermo, the journey time from any part of northern Europe is around 5h, and the price of the flight should not be more than € 300 round trip. Due to the great weather and kitesurfing conditions, Sicily is ranked as one of the top kite destinations in Europe. Therefore it is also OUR TOP PICK.

  2. The Guincho (Portugal)

El Guincho is a spot located very close to Lisbon, at the mouth of the Tagus River. This kite spot is one of the best places to kite in Europe. It is a beach exposed to the northwest wind, and as a Portuguese beach it is, waves of 1-2 meters are formed frequently. The Guincho beach is respected for being surrounded by rocks; however, it is a wide beach where you can easily maneuver. The spot is easily accessible and well known to windsurfers. The best months to kite in The Guincho are July and August, but there is wind from May to October. The wind is usually side-shore, and the best direction to kite in this spot is onshore. In the Guincho, when it is sunny, there is awesome wind and creates the perfect conditions for a kitesurfing trip in Europe. The closest airport is Lisbon, and if we do not want to go by car, flights would be around € 60 round trip with low-cost companies like Ryanair or Easyjet

Canary islands, probably the best kitesurfing destination in Europe

kite trip europe

3. Fuerteventura (Spain)

Fuerteventura is one of the most known kitesurfing destinations in Europe due to the excellent weather and strong winds. Furthermore, Fuerteventura holds a wide variety of kite spots, from terrific wave spots to butter flat water spots. That makes this island a paradise to kite in Europe.

Down here you can find what the best kite spots in Fuerteventura are

Sotavento Beach (fuerteventura)

Located southeast of Fuerteventura, near Costa Calma you can find the wonderful Sotavento beach. It has a large space suitable for kitesurfing regardless of your level of experience. The force of the wind, as well as the extensive hotel and commercial infrastructure around Sotavento beach, make it one of the favourite destinations for all kitesurf lovers. The most constant winds take place in the spring and summer seasons, which has propelled Sotavento beach to be the site chosen every year to hold the world championship of windsurfing and kitesurfing.

El Burro Beach (fuerteventura)

In the northeast of Fuerteventura, there is the El Burro kitesurf spot. Its best time is summer when the trade winds act stronger and steadily. It has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. However, its waves are for experienced kiters, except for the beach area reserved for their learning; Its waves are short, which favours kitesurfing lovers lot. This beach has less general infrastructure than Playa de Sotavento, but it can be easily reached and has parking spaces close to it.

 Flag Beach of Corralejo (fuerteventura)

Also located in the northeast of Fuerteventura, it faces the Isla de Lobos, the Flag Beach. This place is perfect for kitesurfing at all levels, from beginners to experts. Furthermore, the waves break in different places and in various directions which gives athletes great versatility. This beach offers an excellent tourist infrastructure specialized in the sale and rental of kite equipment. Gran Canaria (Spain), particularly the southeast and south of the island, is ideal for kitesurfing due to the force of the wind at any time of the year. Like Lanzarote, which also offers perfect weather conditions throughout the year. And it is that this sport, like windsurfing, needs waves and winds of three to eight knots on the Beaufort scale to be able to enjoy it fully.

In general, the canary islands probably hold the best kite spots in Europe.

4. Tarragona (Spain)

Tarragona is located on the Mediterranean sea, and although it is not a very famous kite destination in Europe, there are many exciting kite spots. In spring and summer, Tarragona coast becomes a primary kite destination, especially for these kiters living near Barcelona.

L’Ampolla Beach ._ The town of L’Ampolla beach is not “the spot”, but it is an excellent spot. You can sail with the garbí wind, which comes from the south; and with mistral wind, in gusts that come from the north and raise high and short waves. It is a very safe spot, surrounded by the Delta.

Riumar Beach ._ Semi-urban beach in the municipality of Deltebre, 2.5 km long and with fine sand, it is excellent for kitesurfing with the mistral wind (N) in autumn, winter and spring. Keep in mind that it is a strong and gusting wind that churns the waters. Ideal for medium and advanced kitesurfers.

Trabucador Beach ._ In the district of San Carlos de la Rapita. Beach 2 in 1, has two faces, the very rough so that you can choose shore. Shallow (shallow), calm water, without large waves or complications. With an N / W or S / W wind you will have smooth water in the bay area (that is, the part of the shore that ‘looks’ towards our Iberian peninsula). Then, from May to September, the winds from the south are constant (the thermal of the S / E and the garbí of the S) that also give flat waters. It is, therefore, a windy but waveless beach, perfect for beginners and freestyle. There are many hidden kite spots in Europe located in Tarragona! You should give a chance to these incredible kite spots!

5. Murcia: La Manga del Mar Menor (Spain)

The Mar Menor is a warm sea that allows kitesurfing practically all year round (except in winter, when there is little wind). An ideal place to learn and progress, with guaranteed quality winds and safe and shallow waters, without waves (flat water). In Murcia, you can find some of the best and less crowded kite locations in Europe. Down here, you can see some of them:

Los Molinos. _ Beach in the town of San Pedro del Pinatar, in the northern part of the Mar Menor. Beach with excellent east winds that give very flat water, ideal for freestyle. It can also be the perfect spot for racing if the east wind is somewhat disturbed because the orientation is ideal for speed and we always stay close to land.

Los Narejos. _ Urban beach in the town of Los Alcázares. The thermal winds from the south (the milk from S – S / O) are going, which come to us in the form of a side wind. It has a choppy, highly recommended for FreeWave and freeride.

Isla del Ciervo ._ beach located south of La Manga del Mar Menor, in Cartagena. A protected area, it is a spot so appreciated by boaters that kitesurfing and other water sports have been allowed. It is navigable with the thermal winds from the south (again the milk), which shows its head in the spring and autumn months. Oh, and calm, you will not drown in its waters: it is a very shallow beach where you can get away from the shore without fear. For this reason, it is excellent for beginners.

Los Nietos ._ Also south of La Manga, in Cartagena. Somewhat neglected beach, with mud, dirt and many stones. It is a ‘rather ugly’ beach, but of excellent inland beauty, highly appreciated by fishermen and kitesurfers. Excellent navigation with east winds (N / E and S / E) that push towards the coast (onshore). It is a beach with no waves and shallow water, ideal for beginners and practising freestyle tricks.

Calblanque ._ Although it is no longer Mar Menor, it is very close to the beginning of La Manga, in the Calblanque Natural Park. It is a beautiful natural space, so protected that it is ‘almost virgin’. The landscape of golden sands, dark rocks and transparent waters. A paradise to be respected, so no, don’t take the fucking apple! (This translates into: be clean, careful and collect your garbage). In addition to being a beautiful space, it is ideal for navigation, both west (O) and east (E). With the west, the conditions are suitable for freestyle jumps, while the east gives us incredible waves to surf.

6. Almeria (Spain)

We want to let you know that Almería has an excellent coast – the best after Tarifa, hey, we don’t want to hurt sensibilities – for practising wind sports. A treasure for boaters.

The main kite spot in Ameria is called “Los Genoveses” This beach is located in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. It happens as with the Calblanque beach, which is a virgin and paradisiacal area. The beach is vast, but whenever your kite on the Cape beaches, do it with caution. You can sail with the east wind and with winds from the north. If you like waves, Almeria is a destination that will suit you!

7. Ringkøbing Fjord, Denmark

Do you want to try new waters, literally? Try kitesurfing in the North Sea! Another perfect place for water sports is the Ringkøbing Fjord, a lagoon located on the west coast of Denmark. Connect with nature; focus on catching your wave. The safe environment of Ringkøbing Fjord will allow you to enjoy the excitement and gratification of your movements.

8. Carrapateira, Portugal

The two essential elements of kitesurfing, the strong wind and the water, are always present in Carrapateira (Portugal). Get ready to put all your skills into practice as you ride those mighty Atlantic waves that not everyone is capable of dealing with. Surrounded by cliffs, this hidden gem is a challenge for kitesurfers and surfers, but it is a fantastic place and, without a doubt, it is a place where you will make new friends. It is a famous place for adventure seekers.

9. Tarifa (Spain)

Tarifa is the mecca of kitesurfing in Europe. Among all the kite spots in Europe, Tarifa is the most famous one.

Tarifa is a paradise for kitesurfing, but sometimes it is a bit difficult to find the best spot. We know very well that in Tarifa there is always wind and that it is very likely that you can kite surf somewhere. But this is where the problems start, as people often complain that the current in Tarifa is very strong or gusting. But that’s because they don’t have the map of the paradise spots. We are going to give you the key about the kitesurfing spots in Tarifa for each type of wind.

There are two main wind directions in Tarifa. On the one hand, Levante (from the east, warm and robust and gusty) and on the other hand, Poniente (from the sea, colder and more stable). They say that there are as many Poniente days as there are Levante days, but the truth is that Tarifa surprises us every year and this is what we like. We will detail the best spots for each wind:

On the days the Poniente blows you can kitesurf wherever you want. The superb beach of Tarifa Los Lances works very well, as long as we are not in the high summer season, which prohibits kitesurfing by bathers. But you can go to Valdevaqueros. The west wind is onshore, it takes you ashore, so it is relatively safe and you can hit the kite without problems. The Rio Jara lagoon between Tarifa and Valdevaqueros also works great in the days of Poniente. Just remember that technically kitesurfing is not allowed there, but … there are always people kitesurfing.

KITESURF SPOT FOR DAYS OF LEVANTE:

This is when things get complicated since this wind is usually powerful and is offshore, that is, it takes you out to sea and scares most beginners. But don’t worry, some places work very well for both beginners and pros in the Levante days. Let’s go there:

Valdevaqueros. The most typical place that “always” works. It is located a few kilometres west of the city of Tarifa, and the wind is mainly side-shore, which enters from the side, parallel to the beach, even if in Tarifa it is offshore. It is a lovely area due to its large sand dune, and you can find good burgers and beer at the beach bars. Many beginners and schools come here.

Palmones. If Levante is too strong in Tarifa (30-50 knots), there is a place in Algeciras that will have the perfect wind. Palmones. Here is a beach with waves and a lagoon with flat water (which will probably be full of professionals with high tide and good wind). But in the sea, there is a lot of space.

Canos de Meca. If the direction of Levante is terrible, that even in Valdevaqueros the offshore wind enters with mega gusts, the best option will be to go to Caños. It is almost in Cádiz, so you have to drive until you get there. This place is in the lighthouse where the Battle of Trafalgar took place.

Spa. It is the spot in Tarifa, on the right side of the island. In the first days of Levante, it is incredible to jump high and navigate at full speed. Here there will also be great waves to fully enjoy. This place is not for beginners or intermediate kitesurfers on Levante days, as the wind is entirely offshore and you will end up in the middle of the Atlantic if you make a mistake.

We cannot say that there is a kitesurf destination in Europe better than the others, because all of these spots leave any kite lover breathless. There are numerous and varied kite spots all over Europe, and we recommend that you visit them all. (if time permits). Which kite destination in Europe is the one you have enjoyed the most? We would be glad to hear about your thoughts

KITESURF TRIP PLANNER

Based on wind seasons, when is your kite trip, sainte-anne spot guide – january kitesurfing in guadeloupe, 2023 annual kitesurf summary, bamboo watches by gloriousdays, 2022 north navigator kiteboarding bar review (and benefits of short bars), dakhla, morocco – kitesurf spot guide for march, windy regions this month.

Welcome to Global Kite Spots. One of the largest, constantly updated and maintained online resources for kitesurfers planning their next kitesurf holiday.

If you’re a kiteboarder and you’re planning your next kitesurf trip, you’ve come to the right place. Global Kite Spots lists kitesurfing destinations by month, not by region. Most of us don’t plan our holiday around a kitesurf spot – We plan it around the time we’re free to go.

So why are most kitesurf spot guides starting with the destinations? It seems that they are aimed toward kiteboarders who have a specific kite spot in mind. Of course you can do the same here. If you know where your next kitesurf destination will be, and want to learn more about this region, go to the Regions section and you have over 100 destinations listed alphabetically, from ABC-islands to Vietnam.

But more commonly the question is ‘Where is it windy in the world in January?’ Or July? Or November? Simply click on the month you’re interested in, and a comprehensive list of kitesurf regions are listed, based on peak, early or late season – Possible, thanks to seasonal prevailing winds and reliable thermals.

As always, wind is not guaranteed, even in the most reliable places like North Brazil, South Africa’s Cape Town or Spain’s Tarifa. But having said that, Global Kite Spot’s wind charts are based on both empirical and anecdotal data, and is constantly refined when new data is discovered. We are here to inspire and educate, so that you can find a windy beach for your next kitesurf adventure.

kite trip europe

Ponta Preta is a gnarly but incredible wave spot, with a wave that breaks close to the rocks and with offshore wind, so it’s definitely for advanced kitesurfers only! If you are at a level to take this one on you’ll be stoked with the long pumping waves and perfect cross offshore wind direction. The waves can get really big here, and the launch isn’t exactly the easiest with a big shore break to get through, but it’s totally worth it for the kitesurfing conditions once you get out. The wave kitesurfing world tour has stopped here more than once, and it’s home to Mitu Monteiro and Airton Cozzolino, two of the best wave kitesurfers in the world. If you could name a reason they got so good, it might be having Ponta Preta on their doorstep!

In the heart of the expansive Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Senegal, lies the invaluable archipelago of Cape Verde. This seemingly modest cluster of islands, however, holds immense significance, not only for its geographical allure but also as a haven for board sports enthusiasts. The ION CLUB Sal, with its two distinct centers strategically placed on the beautiful Santa Maria beach and in Ponta Leme, embodies the essence of this aquatic paradise.

2 kites in the breaking waves at Ponta Sino

Ponta Sino lies at the Western end of Kite Beach in Cape Verde, offering a mid size wave generally more suited to intermediate and advanced kitesurfers. The wind here blows cross or cross off shore so be careful not to kitesurf too far out past the point and into the open ocean. It’s one of the kite spots which is popular for jumping and freestyle, due to the waves breaking over a shallow reef with flat spots in between the waves. Kitesurfers wanting to jump should watch out for wave riders and vice versa.

Cape Verde itself is well known for its kitesurfing, and there are multiple local riders competing on the kitesurfing world tour. If you’re lucky you’ll get to see them in action in the waves, and if conditions are perfect you can head to Ponta Preta to watch or partake in some serious wave riding. Santa Maria is the local town where there is generally a really good vibe with all the kitesurfers hanging out in the evening, and the local seafood is as fresh as can be!

Random Wave at Kite Beach on Boa Vista Island

Escape to the tropical paradise of Boa Vista Praia Carlota, Cape Verde, where kitesurfing enthusiasts can indulge in a thrilling water sports adventure. With its stunning beaches, ideal wind conditions, and vibrant nightlife, Boa Vista is the perfect destination for those seeking an unforgettable kitesurfing getaway.

Das ist ein Kitestrand in Sal.

Kite Beach in Sal is one of the most popular kite spots on the island, with a mix of waves and flat water, and is also one of the only places on the island where you can learn to kitesurf. It is located a short distance from the main town of Santa Maria, and due to the pretty friendly kitesurfing conditions and the fact you can choose to kite with either your surfboard or twintip, it tends to be one of the busiest spots in Sal. The island is home to multiple world champion wave kitesurfers, and kite beach is the place where a lot of people hone their skills before hitting the more aggressive wave spots around the island. The wind blows cross onshore, so it’s perfect if you aren’t super comfortable with the waves as you know you will always be blown back to the beach.

Seahorse Bay Kitesurfing Spot is one of those dreamy flat water areas in Egypt that have had kite schools from the very beginning, and remain popular to this day. Several of the big German companies call this their home in Egypt and for good reason, with stunning crystal clear water, wind for most of the year and perfect kitesurfing conditions from total beginners up to professional freestyle kitesurfers. The local area doesn’t offer much in the way of traditional Egyptian history, but you can fly cheap from most European countries, it’s warmer than Europe, and Kitesurfing at Seahorse Bay offers great flat water experience without the crowds that you’ll normally find at some other Kitesurf Spots in Hurghada itself like Kitesurfing in Soma Bay or Kiteboarding in Hurghada Bay .

Have you been Kiteboarding in Seahorse Bay? Contact us to help Kitesurfers to get high quality information and check out our favorite Spots for Kitesurfing in Africa .

View from Hotel to the Kitesurf Beach in Safaga

Safaga is a well-known flat water Kite Spot located 5 km South of Soma Bay, offering a more traditional Egyptian village with minimal tourist facilities. There are a few shops and cafes here and there, as well as a small market and a fish and vegetable market. Depending on the tide and the spot you choose to locate yourself, you’ll have large sandy beaches and sparkling turquoise waters surrounded by rugged terrain. Safaga is also a fantastic dive and snorkelling site so if the wind lets you down there’s still plenty to do

It’s not a spot for wave riders, but if you’re looking to learn or to practice kitesurfing in flat water then Safaga offers a huge area with warm water and consistent wind.

Atoll between Hamata and Berince

Hamata Kite Spot offers a huge flat water lagoon, crystal clear water, the best wind statistics in Egypt, and a laid back atmosphere. If you want to kitesurf and not a lot else, this could be the perfect spot for your next kiteboarding holiday. There is a large waist deep area which makes this an ideal spot for anyone learning to kitesurf, and all the local kite schools offer lessons as well as transfers to the spot as none of them are directly on the kite spot itself.

Hamata offers a little more greenery than a lot of the other Egyptian spots, and the mangroves on the upwind end of the lagoon really add to the beauty of this isolated kitesurfing paradise. With pretty consistent wind through the year this is definitely a good kite spot to put on the list to visit.

Lamp on the background of the sea and the coastline of Lamu Island Kenya

Lamu Island, situated off the coast of Kenya, is a true tropical paradise that has remained relatively untouched, offering a unique blend of rich culture, pristine beaches, and an idyllic setting for an unforgettable kitesurfing adventure. Far from the crowds, Lamu provides you with a serene kitesurfing spot where the azure Indian Ocean meets the warm African sun.

Diani Beach in the morning

Diani Beach is a very well known and highly regarded kite spot on the coast of Kenya, only 35km or so from Mombasa. For kitesurfing, Diani Beach offers a huge lagoon with warm, shallow, and flat water along with a reliable trade wind and 2 wind seasons. This is the right place to hang around and slow down with wide white sunny beaches, a tropical summer breeze, glittery blue water, and a wild touch of African authenticity. There are plenty of schools offering lessons here, and a variety of different spots to suit freestyle kiteboarding and wave riding too, so it welcomes beginners and pros alike.

Kiteguide our mission

How it all began

  • In 2016, seeking respite from the corporate grind, I embarked on a 6-month sabbatical, unwittingly stepping into the windswept world of kitesurfing on Brazil's north coast. The consistent gusts became both a challenge and inspiration.
  • Navigating the kitesurfing landscape revealed a stark reality. Every school claimed perfection, yet their clamors were loudest when guests were most needed—typically in the off-peak seasons. This dissonance sparked the inception of Kiteguide, a vision to provide genuine insights for the kitesurfing community beyond the marketing hype.
  • Amidst the waves, wind, and the struggle to pinpoint ideal spots, collaborations unfolded. Cäsar, a seasoned marketing expert, became a crucial ally. Sharing the vision, we set out to create a portal that transcended the superficial and aided enthusiasts in finding the perfect wind.
  • The journey faced its first test with a collaboration with a German database product information system company in Schmallenberg. However, misaligned interests, focused on bus travels rather than kitesurfing, prompted a reevaluation of the partnership.
  • Undeterred, the vision persisted. Enter Caspar, an experienced kitesurfer with deep connections in the community. His insights and structuring skills added depth to our endeavor. Collaborations with programmers, like Michal from Amazon, brought automation and scalability but also unforeseen challenges. Michal's departure left us with a complex Amazon Project, a testament to the unpredictable nature of our journey.
  • The story took another turn with Julien. As the owner of a software company, he joined the project, rebuilding it from scratch to ensure cost-effectiveness and scalability. Today, Julien is an integral part of the Kiteguide team—a friend, shareholder, and passionate supporter, despite not yet venturing into kitesurfing himself.
  • Our narrative is one of perseverance, collaboration, and adaptation. Kiteguide stands as a beacon in the kitesurfing community, shaped by the winds of Brazil, the challenges faced, and the enduring spirit of those who share our passion for the wind. The journey continues, inviting more enthusiasts to join the adventure, navigate the winds, and discover the essence of Kiteguide—a story that unfolds with every gust, every collaboration, and every chapter added to our ongoing tale.

Kitesurfing in June

Find best holidays in june.

Slowly but surely, summertime is starting and available places in our destinations become less. For that reason, we prepared a short overview on which destinations are available for your kitesurf holiday in June. Check out where to go for best kite conditions including wind and a lot of sun to enjoy.

Egypt: Seahorse Bay

Morocco: dakhla, morocco: essaouira, greece: kos, italy: sicily, zanzibar: jambiani/paje.

You want to go kitesurfing during another month? Here you can find the best spots…

Thanks to the large shallow water area and the stable wind direction, the spot is perfect for beginners. There is enough space in the lagoon as the number of students and storage slots are limited. This is why neither beginners nor advanced kiters feel restricted.

Right at this spot, there are indeed three things that we haven’t seen in Egypt anywhere else: Accommodations right at the spot (even on the kite school area), a limited guest number for more space on the water and kiting at low tide.

  • Family like atmosphere at Ibi & Friends Kiteclub Seahorse Bay
  • Living right at the spot, without TukTuk rides
  • Complete packages for beginner, intermediate and advanced
  • Limited availability for more space on the water
  • From bed to board: 20 meters from your room to the spot
  • Holiday destination for single travelers, families, and couples

KiteWorldWide Kitesurfing in Egypt - Seahorse Bay

Right at the Zenith Hotel Dakhla, you will find the kite lagoon, which makes flat-water fans hearts’ beat two times faster and enables beginners to quickly make their first meters on the board. The spot is influenced by the ebb and flow, yet the low tide still leaves the lagoon with sufficient water and space for everyone. Depending on the tidal level you will have a 150m to 300m wide shallow water area just in front of the KiteWorldWide center. This is where 90 % of you will spend most of the time. The ground is sandy without any disturbing rocks or corals and the wind blows constantly and side-shore from the left. Thus, this spot offers the maximum of safety for beginners and ideal conditions for freestylers. Even during the main high season, when the mass kite camps located about 1,5-2km away on the other side of the lagoon are full, you will always find enough space here.

  • Stunning Kitehotel exclusively for Kiteworldwide
  • Diverse, shallow flat water spot in front of the camp and wave spots around the corner
  • Perfect wind conditions from March to October, good wind from November to February
  • VDWS licensed KiteWorldWide Procenter
  • New flight times mean no overnight stopover

Dakhla, Morocco

The Essaouira Bay is the first destination for everyone — beginners and advanced kitesurfers alike! A huge, ca. 4 km long and up to 800 m wide, crescent-shaped sandy beach with wind from the right is the basic ingredient for a perfect kitesurf vacation. From April to October, the strong, dependable winds, strengthened by thermal effects, are accompanied by reduced swell and, therefore, smaller waves. During this period, the wind comes down out of the north and is side shore or side onshore. Since the bay is bent, it is especially safe, because you always end up back on the sandy beach without any obstacles. Further out you’ll find waves at regular intervals, so you always have time to prepare for the next run. It’s even perfect for wave beginners. And halfway up the bay is the KiteWorldWide partner kitesurfing center. Check out our Strapless Kitesurfing Tutorial to learn more about wave kitesurfing.

  • Stay at the Bianca Guesthouse
  • Great atmosphere in the old town of Essaouira
  • High wind probability
  • KiteWorldWide guide on site
  • Kitesurf spot with a large shallow area
  • Great for wave beginners and advanced wave kiters, lots of different spots

I've been to more than 30 countries, but I'll always think this European city is the best destination for children of any age

  • Of all the countries I've been to, I think London is the best place for kids of any age.
  • My husband and I took our son to the city when he was a baby, a preteen, and a teenager.
  • The city has many museums, parks, and other activities to entertain kids of all ages.

Insider Today

As a travel writer, one of my greatest loves is experiencing a new country , region, or city with my son. But one place has always been our favorite: London.

The city, which is projected to be the top summer travel destination in 2024 , is popular among tourists due to its iconic sites, gardens, and history. But if you ask me, London is also the best spot to bring your kids, especially if they range in age.

I've been to over 30 countries, and out of all of them, London is the place we chose to bring our child when he was a baby, a preteen, and a teenager.

From the city's amazing architecture to its bustling museums , there are plenty of activities to catch any kid's attention. Here's why I'll always believe London is a terrific destination for children of any age.

Transportation in London is usually a breeze

In my experience, arriving in and getting around London is pretty easy. The Heathrow Express, an airport rail link operating from London Heathrow Airport, can transport passengers to Paddington Station in 15 minutes or less.

Once in the city, we take the Tube, a rapid underground transit system, to get to the big sights. Children under 11 travel for free when accompanied by an adult, and discounts are available for older kids.

When my son was 11, he loved the Hop-On, Hop-Off bus, a touristy but fun experience that takes passengers to major city sights like Big Ben and the Tower of London. Passengers can get off the open-top double-decker vehicle anytime, take a tour, grab a bite to eat, and then continue their journey when the next bus comes.

I recommend getting a 48-hour pass because you can get a great city overview on the first day and then dig deeper into certain spots on the second.

Finally, in an emergency like an infant meltdown or a toddler tantrum, Ubers are almost always accessible.

The city is full of parks for children to play in

London has incredible green space for such a large city. Many of the city's parks are free to the public and are wonderful spots for kids to picnic, sightsee, and burn off energy.

Regent's Park has gorgeous gardens, a playground, and a lake. At Hyde Park, families with two adults and up to four children can swim in the Serpentine Lido for only £15, or about $19.

Related stories

Greenwich Park is another one of our favorites because it offers beautiful views of the River Thames and an expansive lawn surrounding the Royal Observatory and Prime Meridian.

There's no need to worry about a language barrier

I'm a seasoned traveler, but language barriers can still throw me for a loop. I always try to learn a few simple phrases, but not understanding a language and juggling a kid can cause a lot of stress.

In London, there's no need to worry about a language barrier. Though over 300 languages are spoken in the city, most people know English.

There might be different words for various objects — like "nappy" or "diaper" — but I've easily communicated with the people around us in London.

London is full of kid-friendly eateries

Each time we've traveled to London, I've seen terrific restaurant options for palates of all ages. For example, Gordon Ramsay's Bread Street Kitchen offers a deal so children 8 and under dine for free when ordering off the kids' menu.

Delicious international foods , such as Italian, Indian, Thai, and Ethiopian cuisine, are also available all over London. Fast-food chains like Simit Sarayi and Yo! Sushi are also located throughout the city.

We loved taking our son to sample sweets at Harrods' Food Halls and enjoy sandwiches and scones at St. Martin-in-the-Fields' Café in the Crypt in Trafalgar Square.

There are tons of entertaining museums that offer free admission

London offers nearly 200 museums for patrons to soak up the city's culture and history. They're the perfect places to seek shelter from rain or serve as quiet, interesting respites for a napping baby.

On our first family trip, we strolled our then 8-month-old son through several wings of The British Museum as he peacefully slept. When he was 11, we hit The British Library to marvel at the Magna Carta and checked out the artwork at the National Portrait Gallery.

On our most recent excursion, we watched as our 16-year-old perused the masterpieces at Tate Modern. Most of these museums offer free admission, great kids' activities, hands-on exhibitions, and terrific gift shops.

London is close to tons of easy day-trip options

If you're a traveler who needs a change of pace or scenery every few days, London is a gateway to several day-trip destinations. Places like Oxford, Cambridge, Bath, Birmingham, and Brighton are only a bus ride away.

Visiting cities like Paris , Brussels, and even Amsterdam in a single day is doable thanks to the Eurostar train, which runs through several Western European countries.

The bottom line: London's fun, full of great transportation options, and offers endless activities to entertain the entire family. It's truly a winner for kids of all ages.

What to Know About Venice’s Fees for Day Trips

Venice is trying to mitigate overtourism with a small fee on busy days. City leaders hope it will make visitors more aware of the city’s fragility.

A man on a stepladder in front of a kiosk as another man spots him.

By Elisabetta Povoledo

Reporting from Rome

After years of debate , Venice on Thursday began charging day visitors five euros to visit its fragile historic center on peak days, making it the first city in the world to adopt such a measure to counter overtourism.

Critics question whether a nominal fee will put people off from visiting one of the world’s most desired destinations. But officials hope that it might encourage some to rethink their plans and decide to come on weekdays or in the off-season.

That might help mitigate the impact of the estimated 20 million visitors who descended last year on the city’s beleaguered residents, who number fewer than 50,000, according to municipal statistics . About half of those visitors came only for the day, city officials said. Overnight guests are exempt from the fee.

The spirit of the initiative, city officials have said, is to make people aware of the uniqueness — and fragility — of Venice. Overtourism is creating an economy solely based on tourism that risks killing the city by pushing its dwindling residents out, said Nicola Camatti, an economics professor and expert in tourism at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice.

When will Venice start charging?

The fee went into effect on Thursday, a holiday in Italy. For 2024, city officials have singled out 29 peak days when single-day travelers in Venice between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. have to pay. The days run until mid-July and are mostly on national holidays and weekends. The access-fee website provides a list of the dates.

Who must pay?

While just about everyone visiting the city has to register to obtain a QR code, not all visitors have to pay the fee. Overnight guests at registered accommodations like hotels or Airbnbs are exempt, because they already pay a daily tourist tax, as are people who study or work in Venice and those visiting relatives. There are other exemptions as well.

Residents of Venice, those born there and minors under 14 are among those who do not have to register. But they must have documents that prove their status.

It is possible that different fees will apply next year on a sliding scale that will depend on how many people city officials expect on any one day. City officials said the fees could be as high as 10 euros per day.

How will the system work?

Before coming to Venice on peak days, visitors should use the website to register and get a QR code.

The code will be scanned at points where visitors enter, like the train station, the city parking lot, the airport and the sprawling waterfront along the San Marco basin where boats dock. The access points will have one line for tourists and another for residents and what officials call city users, who are coming into Venice for reasons other than sightseeing.

At least for now, those who do not register ahead of time can do so at some access points or on their cellphones, officials said. Assistants will be available.

Initially, the controls will be “very soft,” said Michele Zuin, the municipal councilor responsible for the city’s budget.

Speaking to reporters at the foreign press association in Rome this month, Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said the fee was not about cashing in on tourists. “The costs of the operation are higher than what we’re going to make,” he said.

Why is Venice doing this?

City officials hope to relieve some of the stress that tourists put on the city by encouraging them to come on less busy days. They also say that by knowing ahead of time how many visitors to expect, the city can better deploy services.

“We want to better manage the numbers of tourists and disincentivize mass tourism” that makes it difficult for residents and visitors to “live in this city,” Mr. Zuin said this month.

To track the flow of visitors, the city already monitors them via phone location data and surveillance cameras, a system some critics have likened to Big Brother .

Venice has also fallen under the scrutiny of the United Nations’ culture agency, UNESCO, whose experts are concerned that not enough is being done to protect the city. Last year, Venice risked being added to UNESCO’s list of Endangered World Heritage Sites after experts at the agency listed mass tourism , along with climate change and development, as a major threat to its future. It urged City Hall to take steps to ameliorate the damage.

The municipal council approved the access fee just days before UNESCO was to vote on its status, and Venice stayed off the “in danger” list . But UNESCO officials said in a statement that “further progress still needs to be made” to conserve Venice.

Critics of the access fee note that officials have not capped the number of visitors, and they say that the nominal fee is hardly a deterrent. As recently as Friday, city officials said that about 80,000 visitors swelled the city’s narrow calli, as the streets are known, and the gardens of the 2024 Venice Biennale , still the world’s principal place to discover new art .

How else is Venice trying to restrict visitors?

Venice also has taken other steps it hopes will reduce what city officials call “mordi e fuggi” tourism, or “eat and flee,” referring to those who seek the city’s greatest hits — the Rialto Bridge and St. Mark’s Square — and who bring packed lunches and dump their garbage, contributing little to the local economy.

After years of heated debate and protests by vocal Venetians, the city banned cruise ships from its inner canals in 2021 , though Mr. Camatti, the tourism expert, said the ban on the ships had not reduced the number of day visitors.

This year, the city imposed a limit of 25 people per tour group and also banned the use of megaphones.

What polling can (and can't) tell you

On Nov. 5, election officials across America will count more than 150 million ballots to answer a burning political question: Who will be president of the United States? Until then, the best signals we can get will mostly come from public opinion polls, which will be the fuel of endless debate on who has the lead, Democrat Joe Biden or Republican Donald Trump. But what do polls really tell us? Lik

My Secret to Weeks of Free Lodging in Europe

I wanted to stay in apartments or houses—but i was a brand-new college grad on a budget.

This is One Thing , a column with tips on how to live.

After I graduated from college, I knew I wanted to travel for a few months, so I secured a part-time job that could be done remotely. I didn’t want to do my work shifts from a hostel bunk bed or random cafés that stayed open late. (I’d be in Europe, thanks to an EU passport, and my gig was based in the states.) Paying for Airbnbs the entire trip would eat up way too much of my paychecks. It was kismet that just as I was starting to plan my travels, my friend sent me a video about a couple traveling the world and dog-sitting along the way, using an app called Trusted Housesitters .

As an avid dog lover, I thought it was perfect. I paid a little over $100 to make an account, then started browsing housesits around the world. I adorned my profile with pictures of me and the various dogs in my life, and applied for opportunities across the ocean. Before I had even left the United States, I had three gigs set up: I’d spend about 10 days in Scotland and Wales, then three weeks in Amsterdam.

Just like when setting up drinks through a dating app, you do have to be vigilant and pay attention for red flags when talking to potential hosts. My stay in Scotland was less than ideal for many reasons—the situation could have been easily avoided if I had listened to my gut and declined that gig. (The app does do background checks, and there’s an opportunity for both sides to leave reviews, meaning you don’t go in completely unaware.) But the other dog-sits were fantastic. One experience went so well that last fall, I returned to Amsterdam to once again to dog-sit Pretzel, a lovely Maltipoo, while her parents got married and went on their honeymoon.

Although I opted for longer sits abroad, there is also the option to just watch a furry friend stateside for a weekend. (If you do go internationally, be mindful that you might potentially need a work or tourist visa.) I just checked the app, and as I’m writing this, there are opportunities available in cities that include Austin, Atlanta, and Boulder.

Of course, you have the responsibility of taking care of someone else’s dog—you need to do some planning and can’t just leave the pet alone all day, and the owners don’t pay you. But the free accommodations feel like a fair exchange to me. I also love that many of the dog-sit locations are in more residential areas, so you’re able to experience local life in whatever city you’re in. Plus, you get to hang with a cute dog. What could be better?

European Union adopts more favourable Schengen visa rules for Indians

Indian Nationals can now apply for a multiple entry Schengen visa with longer validity

On 18 April 2024, the European Commission adopted specific rules on the issuing of multiple entry visas to Indian nationals, which are more favourable than the standard rules of the Visa Code that applied to date. This new visa ‘cascade’ regime for Indian nationals residing in India who apply for Schengen (short-stay) visas in India will provide easier access to visas with multi-year validity for travellers with an established travel history, if the passport validity allows.

According to the newly adopted visa “cascade” regime for India, Indian nationals can now be issued long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after having obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years. The two-year visa will normally be followed by a five-year visa, if the passport has sufficient validity remaining. During the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals.

This decision comes in the context of strengthened relations under the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, which seeks comprehensive cooperation on migration policy between the EU and India, with facilitation of people-to-people contacts being of key aspect due to the importance of India as a partner for the EU.

Schengen visas allow the holder to travel freely in the Schengen area for short stays of a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period. The visas are not purpose-bound, but they do not grant the right to work. The Schengen area consists of 29 European countries (of which 25 are EU states): Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
