The Program
In late May, two Ouachita faculty members lead a three-week study tour to western Europe. The trip focuses on sites of significant historical, cultural and intellectual importance in the development of Western traditions.

Students selected must participate in a preparation course, requiring one hour per week for meeting, and outside preparatory assignments to be determined by the leading faculty.
Upon completion of the trip and required assignments, a student may receive six hours of academic credit. Three hours will be Humanities credit and three will be junior/senior elective credit.
Costs may change, but until such time as we know the precise amount, please be advised the increase is estimated not to rise more than 5% overall.
Course Credit: Upon completion of the tour and its assignments, students receive six hours of junior senior credit CORE 3063 (fulfills 1 Fine Arts requirement) and INTL 3833 (counts as an elective).

University of Alicante

The University of Alicante offers a strong intensive Spanish language program. It is recommended that only students who are majoring or minoring in Spanish should consider this as their study abroad option. Students who are serious about leaning Spanish may also consider this option, but they should understand and appreciate that they will be involved in serious language study for the duration of their stay.
Alicante is located on the Mediterranean coast. It has its own airport and good train connection to Madrid and other parts of Spain.
The option to study topics other than Spanish is not available to OBU students.
Because language learning has to be done in series, the student will take four semester hours of credit over the course of four weeks. Every four weeks the student will begin a new cycle and will receive four semester hours of credit—3 for language and one hour for a complementary class—such as Spanish Culture or literature. Grades for each four week segment will be made available to students, so they do have a clear idea of their performance throughout the semester. Frequently Asked Questions About Europe Tours
What is the best way to tour europe.
Europe is a big continent, and there are many different countries to explore within the region. You can tour Europe by bus, train, car, cruise or even bike! How you choose to travel is down to your personal preferences, how you want to experience the continent, and what you want to see and do along the way.
How many days are enough for a Europe tour?
There are 44 different countries in Europe, so the amount of time you spend on your European trip depends on how many of those countries you want to visit, and how much time you want to spend in each one of them. We recommend at least two weeks for your first visit. You should decide which countries and cities you want to see, and plan your itinerary to make the most of your time.
What is the best month to visit Europe?
Europe is fantastic all year round. Winter can be very cold, but also magical with Christmas markets and outdoor skating, while summer can be hot and sunny - but also extremely busy with tourists. Spring and autumn have milder weather and are slightly less busy. As the seasons are quite different from each other, the best month to visit depends on your personal preferences.
What is the typical cost of a Europe tour?
The amount you need to budget for a trip to Europe depends on how long you're visiting, what countries you're going to, and what activities you'll be taking part in. It'll also depend on whether you choose to stay in budget or luxury accommodation. Most travellers spend between $100 and $150 per day.

Europe Tour Reviews
"Two girls who were really nervous to travel to Europe, did not have a big budget but were passionate about visiting certain cities. The transport system in Europe is good, the distance from city centre was not an issue as trains came frequently and the hotels were 5-10 away from the stations. We chose the vegetarian option although we were informed that we may not always get strictly Vegetarian food. Some days we left as early as 6.30 am. Most cities didn't feel as rushed as we expected; though it would be nice to have a whole day in Florence and Venice. The tour driver and leaders are very friendly and knowledgeable and help you out if you ask for tips and directions. Overall, the tour is a great experience and covers all the main landmarks of the Europe."
"I spent a month long honeymoon with Gayle and Dean from Expat last summer. The entire 22 day excursion throughout Europe was non stop and action packed. Gayle did an amazing job and it was an unforgettable experience. She was knowledgeable, passionate for her work, friendly, and truly the backbone of the entire trip. I strongly recommend this tour and will surely do another one."
"During our trip in Europe, Judith was our tour manager. The tour always ran smoothly, weather it be in party mode, down-time, or pulling us into line. She has a bright and energetic personality, shown only in a way that having a job she absolutely loves can bring out. Her communication skills were second to none, only matched by her co-ordination and management skills. She was always very informative, fun and professional during the tour. I had the absolute best time of my life, with the best people. It was truly a privilege to share the experience with her."

Enjoy afternoon tea in London
Sample over 300-years of history in the simplicity of homemade scones with whipped cream and jam. This deliciously British treat is best enjoyed in the afternoon, complete with a hot cup of Earl Grey, cucumber sandwiches and a tower of sugary delights.
Explore ancient Athens
You don't need to be a historian to appreciate the significance of Athens. Your love affair with the city might begin with goddess Athena’s Parthenon temple and the ruins of Acropolis, but it’s likely to end in a quaint alleyway getting a glimpse at daily life in this ancient capital. The story of Athens continues to unfold.
Catch a flamenco show in Spain
Discover the soul-stirring emotion of a Flamenco show in Spain. This expressive art-form has an intangible cultural heritage recognised by UNESCO, merging song, dance and musical instruments into a performance that has to be experienced at least once. Finish with dinner of paella or tapas to round off your perfect evening.
View the Northern Lights in Iceland
Mother Nature’s wonders come to life with the Aurora Borealis or ‘Northern Lights’. In the frosty landscapes of Iceland, this light display offers viewers a genuine pinch-me moment as vivid colours dance across the night sky.
Spend a night at the opera in Vienna
Hear the talents of traditional opera with the ghosts of Mozart and Strauss in your presence. Though there are more than few places to catch the opera in Vienna, none can compare to the State Opera House (Staatsoper).
Our top 5 things to do in Europe & Britain
There are endless pinch-me moments to be found across the many countries that make up the continent of Europe. But where to even begin? Perhaps a Flamenco show in Spain, afternoon tea in London or a Northern Lights viewing in frosty Iceland? Here are some of the highlights of our Europe and Britain trips that you're sure to love.
Paris, France
The world’s largest gallery and the home of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the Louvre is without rival in the art world and is a must see when in Paris. Allow an entire day to explore its eight departments, not missing the Egyptian antiquities, Islamic art and various halls of sculptures. End your day with sunset by the Louvre Pyramid.
London, England
The British Museum
With some eight million works within its permanent collection, The British Museum is an illustrious European landmark. Admire objects brought back from the voyages of Captain James Cook and walk in the controversial presence of the Parthenon Marbles.
Florence, Italy
Uffizi Gallery
The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters can be found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo fill Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River reveal the building’s architectural brilliance.
Best museums in Europe & Britain
When traveling Europe with Trafalgar, museum hopping is one of the best ways to understand the culture and history of the places you visit. You’ll find yourself critiquing ancient art and staring in awe at some of the world’s most prominent works. Here are some of our favorites.
Paella Valenciana
Saffron, snails, butterbeans and bomba rice are just some of the ingredients you might find in traditional Spanish paella. Despite originating from the coastal town of Valencia, Paella Valenciana is a variety without seafood. You'll love sitting back to enjoy a steaming plate over the sounds of Spanish jazz in a lively alfresco restaurant.
Beef Stroganoff
Now a staple dish in many parts of the world, beef stroganoff is best enjoyed in its birthplace in Russia with a vodka in hand. This simple dish of beef strips sauteed in a sour cream sauce offers a heart-warming taste of this country’s culinary heritage.
Bouillabaisse
The Mediterranean city of Marseille is where a French culinary icon can be found and devoured. The fragrant stew of bouillabaisse, commonly served with crusty white bread, boils up the finest local seafood and seasonal vegetables with the flavors of fennel, saffron and cayenne pepper.
Best food in Europe & Britain
Our trips to Europe gravitate around indulgent local mealtimes. With new cuisines and cooking methodologies found at every turn, this continent is simply delicious.
What to pack for Europe

With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about European history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.
A good book
Exploring Europe is best done at a relaxed pace with ample opportunity to absorb your surroundings. Dedicate a few days to sitting in a park or a cafe, alternating between reading and watching the world go by.
Versatile shoes
Within the space of one outing you may experience all kinds of terrain when in Europe. Pack shoes that can see you walking from an elegant restaurant to a cobbled footpath, with a stroll along the soft grass of a park in between.
A blank journal
With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Europe, you may find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to share recommendations with friends when you return home.
All climate clothing
No matter the time of year you travel, Europe can deliver a myriad of temperatures. From frosty cities of Scandinavia to the temperate hills of Portugal, layered clothing best suits the varying micro-climates across this continent.

Ownin’ @ Olin: My Experience With The European Study Tour

Before I throw 2020 in the trash – and let’s be honest, who isn’t – I wanted to reflect on one amazing experience I had last year. It involved my time abroad with Olin’s European Study Tour (EST)—a huge differentiator and welcome adventure for study abroad students.
WHAT IS EST…AND WHY SHOULD I CARE?
Studying abroad was a must-have for my college career. I knew that before even receiving my acceptance letter into WashU . In fact, my decision to attend Olin was made easier by Olin’s commitment to continue growing their undergraduate study abroad percentage (currently at 60%).
I also knew that I wanted to travel to a Spanish-speaking country due to my minor and Latin background. What I didn’t expect, however, was signing up to study in Madrid—a very different switch from my initial South American plan. Originally, I had thought that a European program was a little too “overdone.” Looking into it, though, I can understand what draws so many people to study abroad.
There was a lot to pull me into this switch: the ease of travel to nearby European countries, the prestige of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (my overseas university), and the richness and beauty of Spanish culture. While all of these reasons played a huge part in my decision process, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that EST was at the forefront.

The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin
What is EST? Olin’s official website describes it as “a linchpin of the European internship/study abroad programs [that] serves as a comprehensive introduction to the European Union and European markets.” The program achieves this goal by providing students with an additional travel experience aside from their already-assigned country.
Students are placed into teams of two or more and then assigned an important business topic and an EU capital. Once abroad, each team is scheduled on a 4-day venture to their location. During this venture, they conduct on-site research via interviews with government officials and business experts. Part two of the program comes two weeks later. Here, each team meets back up in Brussels, Belgium to present their findings at the official European Commission Headquarters. To prepare for this entire journey, all EST participants must enroll in the Olin course MGT 450Z: European Study Tour to familiarize themselves with EU affairs and organize their research for their upcoming excursions.
That’s just a brief intro to the program. Please note that each student’s experience with EST is widely divers e . For example, my fellow Madrid companion, Wendy Bornhoeft, was researching migration in Athens. In contrast, Natalia Rodriguez, another friend, had her home program in Milan – but was assigned populism in Amsterdam.
Me? I was set to tackle the topic of single market with a focus on tax avoidance in Berlin, Germany. This EST assignment would take me from Spain, where I was completing my abroad program, to Berlin and later Belgium. Here’s a little taste of my own EST journey…

Zachary Otero in Berlin
BUSINESS, BLIZZARDS, AND BAVARIAN PRETZELS IN BERLIN
For each team assignment, students are given an EU country where they have never visited. For me, that place was Germany, where I traveled with my partner, Chris. I was excited since I had no previous plans to travel there during my time in Europe, so it was going to be a completely new experience.
Chris and I learned right away that you can pack A LOT into just a weekend trip. On our first day, we literally jumped from venue-to-venue. We went from scaling the East Side Gallery at 11 before moving onto currywurst at Konnopke’s Imbiss at noon. From there, we explored the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, and the Holocaust Memorial. In other words, there was quite a bit of free time aside from our scheduled interviews. I was beyond grateful for how much time the curriculum allocated us to experiences these sights. For me, Berlin was a location that I hadn’t really considered venturing to, so I’m glad that EST made me get out of my comfort zone. I can definitely see myself going back just because I was personally enthralled by the architecture of the city.
The interviews themselves were one of the most memorable parts of the trip. Altogether, we had four professionals from very diverse backgrounds: a senior policy fellow from the European Council on Foreign Relations, a German Market consultant, a climate analyst, and a student researcher for the Center for European Integration. While I won’t bore you with the details of the interviews – because I’m sure you don’t want to read an essay on tax avoidance – I will say that I left each interview feeling much more aware about Germany, the EU, and business relations overall. This knowledge is something I thought I’d never acquire. For instance, one of my interviewers let us know that the U.K.’s decision to leave the EU via Brexit was actually not wholly a loss for the union. That’s because it actually created even more economic power for Germany and brought awareness to other neighboring countries to join.
All in all, my trip to Berlin was an incredible experience. Oh yeah, except for the time that I was sick for the entire weekend. Not to mention, the weather became increasingly cold each day and I found myself covered in five layers or more. To this day, a part of me believes I had COVID before it was considered the deadly-spreading virus it is today (I should probably get an antibody test soon). Still hoping that Chris will take a rain check on that pub crawl we had planned the last night.

BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER IN BRUSSELS
As I mentioned earlier, everyone in EST then reconvenes to present their research at the European Commission in Brussels. This is another weekend stay with a good amount of free time. Your main work encompasses all of Friday and Saturday morning. On Friday, you will hear from multiple EU officials about current government affairs. For instance, Brexit was a huge topic of discussion due to its recent installation. You’ll also be cold-called on your country and EU dilemma topics, so be prepared!
The following day, you will spend a few hours prepping a presentation for your individual dilemma (e.g., single market) and specified topic (which was tax avoidance for me). I was placed in a team with five others to present our findings in our respective countries. Then, we prepared for an impromptu Q&A panel right after. While it was a pretty stressful time trying to organize all of our information in one morning, everything went pretty smoothly. In the end, I ended up applying my research topics to other EU countries like the Netherlands and Malta to make it more universal. All in all, the on-site work at the European Commission was unique to Olin and a scenario I thought I’d never see in my education, let alone in my life.
In terms of Belgium itself: it is an underappreciated country for travel in my opinion. I found myself always finding new, unique sites like the beautiful gardens of the Mont des Arts and the Delirium Café and being obsessed with the food (nothing hits harder than official Belgian waffles and chocolate). After finishing up our presentations on Saturday, a few friends and I spent the rest of our time exploring Brussels and ended the night stumbling upon an outdoor disco ball party not too far away from the Grand Place. It was the best way to celebrate all our hard work being done if you ask me.

BON VOYAGE, 2020
By far, the European Study Tour was one of the most fascinating rewarding programs I have ever participated in. Although composed of a large amount of research, seeing all your work come together at the end of EST is so satisfying. This is especially true when you’re further complimented by EU officials who acknowledge all the research that went into your final deliverable (I have never been so happy to have my knowledge on tax avoidance be appreciated).
Not only did EST give me an opportunity for more travel outside of my Spanish program, but it also gifted me with a heap of extremely useful talking points, ranging from Brexit to the Euro exchange. In a time when it seems like I never have anything to talk about anymore, I can always thank EST for a few dinner party conversation starters. I am excited to see how this program will evolve over the years, especially given the current situation today. To any Olin (or prospective) student out there weighing their abroad options, I couldn’t recommend it enough!
I am a senior in the Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis majoring in Marketing and minoring in Spanish and the Business of Entertainment. I live about a half-hour away from the Lou in Collinsville, IL a.k.a. “the home to the world’s largest ketchup bottle”! I plan on pursuing a career in marketing research and strategy, specifically in entertainment where I hope to improve accurate representation in television. I like to spend my free time reading, riding bike trails, binging TV series, hiking, adventuring with friends, and enjoying the occasional margarita at my family’s Mexican restaurant. I’m always open to new books or TV recommendations!
